Richmond International Raceway Goes Bananas Over Banana-Mayo Sandwiches

RIR to Sell Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Favorite Sandwich for Good Cause

A simple picture of Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s favorite sandwich, banana and Hellmann’s mayonnaise, started an internet craze. Fans, competitors, and even national media reacted. Morning show hosts were taking the plunge and trying this unusual, yet inventive sandwich combination. Some people were disgusted, others brave enough to try it, but Dale Jr. felt inspired.

After a week of seeing the reaction his go-to sandwich caused, Dale Jr. decided to start a two-week fundraising drive to help the fight against childhood hunger. Through Dale Jr.’s own charitable foundation, The Dale Jr. Foundation, fans have been donating since the launch of the drive on April 7th at DaleJrSandwich.com. The donations will benefit the non-profit Blessings in a Backpack, who pack food for school children who may go without food over the weekends. Both Dale Jr. and Hellmann’s have agreed to match the donations up to $50,000 each.

The fundraising drive will continue through April 23rd, which is the day Dale Jr. will drive the No. 88 Hellmann’s Chevrolet in the NASCAR XFINITY Series here at Richmond International Raceway. That’s why RIR has decided to join the banana-Hellmann’s craze! With help from our catering service Americrown, RIR will be selling Dale Jr.’s Banana & Mayo Sandwiches on site at select concession stands on April 22-24.

The “Banana Blessings” sandwiches will be sold for $2 with $1 of each sandwich being donated back to The Dale Jr. Foundation for Blessings in a Backpack, to help the fight against childhood hunger.

“When we heard about Dale Jr.’s fundraising drive, we knew we needed to step up and help stop childhood hunger,” said Dennis Bickmeier, President of Richmond International Raceway. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer fans the opportunity to help this worthy cause. What better way to end this program than allowing the great NASCAR fans at RIR to help by purchasing a ‘Banana Blessing’.”

The “Banana Blessings” will be located in select grandstand concession stands. Make sure you stop by and try this unique sandwich choice. You’ll be glad you did! And, if you’re on social media, use #DaleJrSandwich to document your adventure of trying Dale Jr.’s favorite sandwich.
