Charlotte Recap: Denny Hamlin finished 30th in Sunday’s rain-postponed NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, after a blown engine in the #11 FedEx Office Toyota with 26 laps to go spoiled a strong run to start the Round of 12 in the Chase for Sprint Cup championship. Hamlin led 52 of 334 laps in the race, and was a top-three car throughout the afternoon. Running second behind eventual winner Jimmie Johnson as the laps clicked and teams prepared for the final round of pit stops, Hamlin felt the motor let go with no warning. Multiple Chase competitors also found trouble at Charlotte, and the finish moved Denny into the eighth and final transfer spot with two races remaining in the round, Oct. 16 at Kansas Speedway and Oct. 23 at Talladega SuperSpeedway. Johnson was victorious to punch his ticket to the round of eight, and was followed to the finish line by Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman and Kyle Larson.

Kansas Preview: The Series heads to Kansas Speedway for Sunday’s 400-mile event on the 1.5-mile oval. Hamlin has one win (Spring 2012) and five top-10 finishes in 16 career races at Kansas. In last year’s Chase event at the track, Hamlin started fifth and finished second, and he has led 68 career laps at Kansas.

Hamlin Conversation — KANSAS:

How does Charlotte change the team’s mindset heading into Kansas?

“Obviously, Charlotte put us in a bit of a hole in this round of the Chase, but we’re not alone by any means. Others had some trouble, and that’s really who we’re racing to advance. We need to take a few more chances and maybe put ourselves in a little riskier situations because we can’t afford decent finishes. We need to go after race wins these next two weeks to guarantee we advance. But, as we saw last year, anything can happen to anyone at any time in this format.”
