Weekend schedule and format for All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro

Photo by Andrew Boyd for SpeedwayMedia.com.

This weekend NASCAR heads to North Wilkesboro Speedway for the All-Star race. Seventeen drivers have already earned a spot in the event.

Drivers who have won points races in 2023 or 2024 are eligible plus past Cup Series champions and All-Star race winners, regardless of whether they are current full-time Cup Series drivers. The top two finishers in the All-Star Open will also transfer to the All-Star Race.

The final spot in the race will be set by the All-Star Fan Vote and awarded to the top driver who is not currently eligible.

There will be two, 60 lap heat races to set the field for the All-Star Open. The top two racers from the All-Star Open and the winner of the Fan Vote will join the field to compete in the 200-lap All-Star Race. The winner will claim a $1 million prize.

The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series will also compete this weekend at North Wilkesboro Speedway in the Wright Brand 250 on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The NASCAR Xfinity Series is taking a week off and will return to competition at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 25.

TEAM CHEVY NASCAR RACE ADVANCE: North Wilkesboro Speedway

TEAM CHEVY ADVANCE: NORTH WILKESBORO SPEEDWAY
North Wilkesboro, North Carolina
May 17-19, 2024

 NASCAR AT NORTH WILKESBORO

The NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) will kick off back-to-back race weekends in North Carolina with a trip to the historic – and freshly repaved – North Wilkesboro Speedway. One of racing’s oldest tracks, the .625- mile oval was revitalized and returned to the NASCAR schedule last season after a 27-year hiatus.

NASCAR’s premier series will trade in points for a potential payday as North Wilkesboro Speedway will host the NASCAR All-Star Race for the second-straight season. For the NCTS, the race for the playoffs continues as the second-half of the regular-season takes the series to the North Carolina short-track for the Wright Brand 250 – the 10th race of the season.

LOCKED-IN

To be automatically eligible for the NASCAR All-Star Race, a driver has to meet the following requirements: Winner of a points-paying event in 2023 or 2024; full-time drivers who are past All-Star Race winners; or full-time drivers who have won a NASCAR Cup Series championship. There are 17 drivers that are already locked into Sunday’s All-Star Race, with the top-two finishers in the All-Star Open and the fan vote winner completing the 20-driver lineup for the main event.

Team Chevy drivers occupy eight of the 17 spots that are already secured for the 40th running of the NASCAR All-Star Race. That list includes representation from five different Chevrolet organizations:

· Hendrick Motorsports: Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, William Byron
· Trackhouse Racing: Ross Chastain, Daniel Suarez
· Richard Childress Racing: Kyle Busch
· Kaulig Racing: AJ Allmendinger
· JTG Daugherty Racing: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Chevrolet in the NASCAR Cup Series at North Wilkesboro Speedway

Since the series’ inaugural event at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 1949, the .625-mile oval has hosted 93 points-paying races for NASCAR’s top division, with Chevrolet earning a trip to victory lane a series-leading 32 times. The Bowtie brand’s first North Wilkesboro triumph came with Jack Smith in the 1957 Wilkes 160. The manufacturer also owns the series’ final two points-paying races at the North Carolina short-track – courtesy of a season sweep in 1996 by Hendrick Motorsports’ Terry Labonte (April) and Jeff Gordon (Sept.).

En route to eventually becoming the winningest manufacturer in series’ history, Chevrolet’s 300th all-time victory in NASCAR’s top division came on the hallowed grounds of North Wilkesboro Speedway. The Bowtie brand earned the milestone victory in the First Union 400 on Apr. 20, 1986, with Dale Earnhardt, Sr., behind the wheel of the legendary No. 3 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. The iconic driver/owner pairing went on to win their first of six championship titles that season.

CHEVROLET COMMANDS

ALL-STAR CROWNS

The 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race will mark the 40th running of the annual non-points paying race. Chevrolet owns a commanding lead in All-Star Race wins over its manufacturer competitors with 21 triumphs in the event, including the inaugural race in 1985 with Darrell Waltrip. Since 2019, Chevrolet drivers have earned the one-million-dollar grand prize in four of the last five All-Star events – each recorded at a different venue:

May 18, 2019: Kyle Larson, No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet (Charlotte Motor Speedway)
July 15, 2020: Chase Elliott, No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet (Bristol Motor Speedway)
June 13, 2021: Kyle Larson, No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet (Texas Motor Speedway)
May 21, 2023: Kyle Larson, No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet (North Wilkesboro Motor Speedway)

The four winningest drivers in All-Star Race history each earned their victories behind the wheel of a Chevrolet-powered machine. Topping the all-time wins leaderboard is seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johson with four All-Star Race wins. Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Jeff Gordon and Kyle Larson closely follow Johnson with three wins each.

ONE YEAR AGO…

It was an all-Larson victory lane in NASCAR’s return to North Wilkesboro Speedway last season. The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion pulled a double duty weekend at the .625-mile North Carolina venue – kicking off the weekend behind the wheel of the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Silverado RST in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Starting from the eighth position, Larson progressively navigated his Silverado RST to the front – ultimately taking the lead for the first time near the halfway mark of Stage Two. The 31-year-old California native went on to take the stage win and lead a total of 138 laps to collect his third career NCTS victory.

One day later, Larson posted yet another dominating performance en route to the checkered-flag and the one-million-dollar grand prize in the 39th running of the NASCAR All-Star Race. Taking the green-flag from the 13th starting position, an early-race pit road penalty forced Larson to move to the rear of the field for a restart on lap 21. Within the following 35 laps, Larson maneuvered his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1 through the 24-car field to take the top position on lap 55 – ultimately leading all but one of the final 146 laps en route to the victory. The victory marked Larson’s third career triumph in the event – with each of those wins coming at three different tracks. Larson now sits second on the NASCAR All-Star Race wins list, tying NASCAR Hall of Famers Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Sr., with three wins in the event.

Harvick’s Return to the Driver’s Seat

While Kyle Larson will be making his qualifying attempt for the Indianapolis 500, Kevin Harvick will return to the driver’s seat to practice and qualify the No. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM Camaro ZL1 in his absence. Harvick retired from full-time NASCAR Cup Series competition at the conclusion of the 2023 season – a 23-year career that saw 60 wins in NASCAR’s top division.

More than half of Harvick’s NCS wins have come behind the wheel of a Chevrolet-powered machine, with the Bakersfield, California, native earning a combined 35 victories in a Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing and Stewart Haas Racing. Harvick also became a champion in NASCAR’s top division with Chevrolet – taking the title in the 2014 season.

PAGING A NEW POINTS LEADER

As the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series enters the second-half of the regular-season, McAnally-Hilgemann Racing’s Christian Eckes continues to prove to be a title contender. In nine races this season, the 23-year-old New York native has collected a series-leading eight top-10 finishes – most recently recording a fourth-place result at Darlington Raceway to regain the top position in the series’ driver points standings. Eckes heads into the North Wilkesboro race weekend as an automatic favorite for the win. In the two NCTS races contested on a short-track this season, it was Eckes that picked up the victory (Bristol Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway).

QUOTABLE QUOTES:

ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 Busch Light FLANNEL CAMARO ZL1

Why is it important for you to run in other series besides the Cup Series?

“I’ll be driving in the truck race and its a great opportunity for me to get laps in at North Wilkesboro since I’ve had very little track time there. Any time I can get laps in at a track, I look at it as a very good thing. It’s made even better this weekend because we won in the truck last weekend at Darlington. It would be awesome to get another win for Al Niece.”

How unique is the All-Star race at North Wilkesboro?

“The goal is the same, which is to win, but the event has a different feel. From the track not having a tunnel and you have to watch for when the track crossover gate opens or you’ll be on the wrong side at the wrong time. To driver intros with the pit crew guys and the various other elements with the qualifying pit stops and things like that. At the end of the day though, we want to win and so does everyone else.”

COREY LAJOIE, NO. 7 GAINBRIDGE CAMARO ZL1

There are no points on the line this weekend and you’re looking to race for a big pay at one of NASCAR’s most storied race tracks. What’s your plan to get into the All-Star Race?

“North Wilkesboro is going to be fun. I haven’t made a big push for the fan vote this year because I want to drive my way in there through the All-Star Open and earn our spot. The new asphalt will change how it races and how we approach our set up. No points on the table this weekend, so it’ll be elbows up with our Gainbridge Chevrolet.”

KYLE BUSCH, NO. 8 LENOVO CAMARO ZL1

What did you learn last year at North Wilkesboro that you can apply for this race?

“I think the only things you learned at North Wilkesboro last year were where the outside wall is and I think the apron in Turns 3 and 4 is the same. That’s about it. I think everything else has changed. The asphalt has changed and they moved the inside wall some. It’s going to be a completely different race.”

North Wilkesboro has been repaved. How do you prepare to race on the new surface when you haven’t been able to test there?

“I think the preparation for how to get ready for that race is now going to be based off of the notes and the test that happened there. Our Chevy key partner teammate William Byron did the test there so we’re relying on him and his notes and the video capture that they got and being able to just kind of watch and listen to the throttle on time and the things they did when they were there.”

This year’s All-Star race will have several new features including a tire strategy element. What effect do you think that will have in the race? Do you think it has the potential to make the racing better?

“I don’t know if the tire strategy will really play into fact as much as people think because we all know when the strategy will be when you want to put those tires on. We all have to start the race on the option tires, we all know we’re probably going to want to finish on those tires, so the two other sets that you’re going to have you’re probably going to run one of those sets in the middle of the race. I don’t know that it’s really going to create much pit strategy separation. The race isn’t long enough for that.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 16 LEAFFILTER / CAMPERS INN RV

“Really special to be able to go to North Wilkesboro and be locked in the All-Star Race after our victory last year. I don’t know what to expect with the new repave; it was really slick last year in the Cup car, but that will be completely different. More than anything, to be a part of the All-Star Race knowing that we earned it by winning last year means so much to me. Points obviously don’t matter, just a night to go out there and give ourselves a chance to win the race and a million dollars.”

DANIEL HEMRIC, NO. 31 POPPY BANK CAMARO ZL1

“Friday going into practice will be the first time I’ve even seen the track at North Wilkesboro. I’m definitely looking forward to having a chance at racing our way into the main event. Competing in the All-Star race is a huge honor, and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Bowman on racing at North Wilkesboro Speedway:

“It (North Wilkesboro Speedway) is a cool place for sure. I didn’t get to run there last year due to my injury so I’m excited to go to North Wilkesboro (Speedway) and get to hit the track. We’ve obviously got to race our way into the main event, so hopefully we can do that for Ally and Hendrick Motorsports. Our pit crew has been strong all year so I’ve got faith in them too. Hopefully we can put all the pieces together and race for a shot at one million dollars this Sunday.”

BLAKE HARRIS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Harris on racing at North Wilkesboro Speedway:

“This weekend looks a little different for us, we have to put our car in the show. We are not taking this week off by any means. Fortunately for us though, the No. 24 (William Byron) had a strong tire test there (North Wilkesboro) and those guys always come back with phenomenal feedback for us. We are really happy with some of the direction that that set us up with on our short-track program in general. We look forward to trying to execute a good weekend and see if we can roll off and get locked-in to the All-Star.”

ZANE SMITH, NO. 71 FOCUSED HEALTH CAMARO ZL1

What do you think about being able to run any tire at North Wilkesboro this weekend and how that combination might work, plus having to race your way in?

“I think it’s awesome! I mean obviously the elephant in the room is that the short tracks have been a struggle and I think anything is great to try to learn and make it better and I think this is the perfect opportunity to do that. There has been some conversation with the softer tire being made from the rain tire rubber and I’ve heard how much faster it is and obviously, the fall off. What we want is tire fall off. So, I’m excited to see how that is but just having options is going to be great. It’s going to be an exciting weekend!”

CARSON HOCEVAR, NO. 77 NASCAR DAY GIVEATHON CAMARO ZL1

What do you think the keys are this weekend with all the different tire options and the unknowns with the repave?

“Qualifying is the biggest thing, being able to be out front early will be huge. Everybody is going to get super close once everyone figures it out, so its’ just the guys who unload really good, really early, will have the edge.”

Would it mean more if you raced your way in this weekend or won the Fan Vote?

“Probably more so to race my way in but if you get in with the fan vote, it shows you still did a lot, and I would be extremely proud of that. I look at this weekend as more of a practice. We still want to work on our race package and we’re still building and still learning. We’re still pretty new, especially me, in that shop. If we get in, I am almost looking at it like a free race to learn and grow which would be huge for everyone involved.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 FREEWAY INSURANCE CAMARO ZL1

What are your thoughts on the All-Star Race this weekend?

“It’s a lot of fun. Last year was the first time I was at North Wilkesboro and it was amazing. It was like going back in time with the fans so close and racing on the short track. It was very very cool. Fans told me they grew up going to that track so it meant a lot to them to bring it back. It was special for them. It’s funny I didn’t know Wilkesboro existed five years ago. So, I learned about its history and the sport’s history. We are going to go there Sunday and fight for a trophy. The money is great, but just like the old days, we really want the trophy. All of us started racing not for the money but for the trophy.”

How beneficial is it to have three consecutive races at home?

“It is really nice. Last weekend, I drove to Darlington on Saturday and Sunday, we will drive to North Wilkesboro this weekend for the All-Star Race and we are home in Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600. It is really nice to be able to sleep in your own bed especially for my crew guys. This is an exciting time of the year for everyone in NASCAR. I am always looking forward to this stretch of the season. We can spend some extra time with friends and family.”

BAYLEY CURREY, NO. 41 AUTOVENTIVE / PRECISION SILVERADO RST

Without having any laps here on the new surface, how valuable is your experience in the simulator going to be?

“It’s everything. I feel like sim time is huge, especially at the races where we only have a 20-minute practice. We’ll have a full-length practice here this time, so that will help us, but definitely going to be leaning off that. Sim time is important everywhere, but especially at a new track like what we have this week.”

MATT MILLS, NO. 42 J.F. ELECTRIC / UTILITRA SILVERADO RST

With your short track racing background, how fun is it to go back to your roots and race at a track like North Wilkesboro?

“This track will be really cool for me; I’ve had this race circled on my calendar. I haven’t ever been there before, but I’ve always wanted to race there because of all the nostalgia and history that the place has. I didn’t get to run last year on the original pavement, but seeing how fast everything looks to be here now on the new pavement through testing, I think it’s going to be pretty cool. I think short tracks are definitely more in my wheelhouse than other tracks.”

ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 45 NC GOVERNOR’S HWY SAFETY PROGRAM SILVERADO RST

How big of a benefactor will it be to get these extra reps in on the repave before the All-Star race?

“Track time on any given weekend is always important, but especially here with it being the first race held on the repave. Last year was fun getting to race at North Wilkesboro for the first time, but the conditions are obviously going to be different. For me, that makes running the truck race that much more important. We’ve got some good momentum after last weekend and I think our guys will have another good shot to contend again.”

Notes of Interest

● For the first time in Josh Berry’s NASCAR Cup Series career, he is attempting to make the non-points All-Star Race as a full-time premier series competitor. The 33-year-old rookie made his series debut with a pair of races in 2021, then filled in as a substitute driver at 10 races in 2023 – eight with Hendrick Motorsports and two with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB. Berry did have the opportunity to race his way into last year’s All-Start Race at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway via the All-Star Open that preceded it, and the short-track aficionado did just that. He qualified second in the injured Alex Bowman’s No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports entry and won the 100-lap shoot-out on the .625-mile oval. As a result, Berry earned the 22nd starting spot for the 200-lap All-Star Race, from where he climbed his way to 15th by race’s end.

● Last Sunday, Berry notched his best finish since taking over the reins of the No. 4 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, a third-place run in the Goodyear 400 at Darlington (S.C.) Speedway. His previous best of 11th this season came in the March 31 race at Richmond (Va.) Raceway. Berry’s achievement at Darlington was all the more impressive as it came from the 33rd starting position. He quickly maneuvered through the field to finish 17th in the first stage, then continued his forward momentum in the second stage, in which he finished 12th. Berry’s third-place result is the best finish for the No. 4 team since the May Darlington race last year, when Kevin Harvick finished second. Additionally, Berry’s 30 positions gained made him as the biggest mover in Sunday’s race at the “The Lady in Black.”

● During this week’s All-Star festivities at North Wilkesboro, Berry will also turn laps on Wednesday night behind the wheel of the No. 4B KHI Late Model, owned by former No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick. Berry has a history of running well in the No. 62. During the offseason, he teamed up with his current crew chief Rodney Childers to run a pair of races, the first at Florence (S.C.) Motor Speedway last November, and the second at Hickory (N.C.) Speedway two weeks later. Berry started on the latter race, dubbed the 2023 Fall Brawl, on the pole and he finished third.

● During last year’s All-Star Race weekend, the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Ford bore the No. 29 en homage to the retiring Harvick’s car number during the first 13 years of his Cup Series career driving for Richard Childress Racing. Harvick started his final All-Star Racing 15th and finished 18th.

● Berry’s third-place finish at Darlington vaulted him into the points lead in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings, 19 markers ahead of Carson Hocevar. Berry is currently ranked 21st in the overall Cup Series standings.

● Harrison’s returns to the No. 4 Ford Mustang Dark Horse this weekend, sporting the green-and-brown colors symbolic of hard work. The green represents grass and farm produce while the brown accents represent dirt and hard-working, blue-collar Americans. The Spartanburg, South Carolina-based clothing and footwear company has ridden to victory lane on two occasions with Berry in the NASCAR Xfinity Series – the first at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May 2022 and the second at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October 2022.

Coming off a strong run at Darlington to a short track where you raced your way into the All-Star Race last year in the No. 48, how do you and the No. 4 team continue to build on the momentum?

“I think the biggest thing our group is focused on is just continuing our process and maximizing the things we can control. Rodney (Childers, crew chief) and the guys at the shop have built really fast Ford Mustang Dark Horses for every short track we have gone to, which gives me a ton of confidence heading to North Wilkesboro. If we just stick to our process, prepare the best we can during the week, and go have a clean day, there’s no reason we can’t advance to the All-Star Race and do really well.”

How does running Late-Model races between the Cup Series races help you on Sundays? Is it more for fun, or do you use those races to sharpen your racing skills?

“Any time you can get more laps at a track we race at in the Cup Series, it helps. We have the simulator with Ford that gives us a pretty good idea of what we can run, but nothing beats being behind the wheel of a racecar and putting in time. I enjoy Late-Model racing, and being able to get more time in ahead of the All-Star Open will only help me learn the track, some of the little details that a simulator can’t show, and also just give me a chance to go have fun, right? These races are still ones we want to compete in and try to win, but ultimately, we want to have fun while we do it. It’s kind of double-sided – part fun and part practice.”

How do you think the different tire options is going to help the racing this weekend?

“It is interesting to me. I think it gives the field some opportunity to try different things and be aggressive at different points in the race, but it’s hard to say without any practice. I like the idea and I hope it makes for a good race, but without any prior experience, I think it is just hard to say it will go one way or another.”

How important is it that Goodyear continues to try new compounds and get aggressive with its experimenting this year?

“I think we all need to applaud NASCAR and Goodyear for trying something different. That is something we have all asked for and they certainly have taken some pretty significant steps to get in a better place with the tire wear. I think the All-Star Race is a great place to try things because it won’t impact our points standings and we can really use it as a chance to learn what can work and what can’t. So, yeah, I am all for Goodyear taking a stab at it and giving us something new and different.”

Layne Riggs and the No. 38 Infinity Communications Group Ford F-150

North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway Competition Notes

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 15, 2024) – Layne Riggs and the No. 38 Infinity Communications Group Ford F-150 return to Riggs’ roots in the short track scene this weekend at the famed North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Riggs and the team come to the North Wilkesboro Speedway after a stellar showing at the Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, running in the Top-10 and even Top-5, before getting caught up in a wreck with 50 laps remaining in the event. Riggs looks to carry that momentum over to this weekend.

While fulfilling his NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series duties this Saturday, Riggs will also compete in this week’s CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car race at the 0.625 mile paved oval.

Track activity for the truck series will start with practice on Friday, May 17 at 3:00 p.m. ET. Qualifying will take place Saturday, May 18th at 10:30 a.m. ET with the race following that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. ET. The 250-lap event can be watched live on FS1. Fans can also listen in from the Motor Racing Network and Sirius XM channel 90.

No. 38 Infinity Communications Group Ford F-150:

DRIVER LAYNE RIGGS:

“This is a big weekend for myself and the team. I’ll be able to capitalize from the CARS Tour race and take what I learn over to the truck. It would be awesome if I could come out of Wilkesboro with two wins. I ran the late model test there, so I feel like I have a leg up on the competition.”

CREW CHIEF DYLAN CAPPELLO:

“We’re looking forward to this weekend, even more so that Layne (Riggs) is running the CARS Tour race today. He’s had solid runs at both Bristol and Martinsville, so I think he can continue that at Wilkesboro, especially with how he ran at Darlington. We have a lot of momentum going into this weekend.”

CLUB NOTES

The “Double”: It was recently announced that LEGACY M.C. co-owner and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is joining NBC Sports for their motorsports coverage in four upcoming races in 2024. Johnson will contribute to pre-race and race coverage of NBC Sports’ presentation of the 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on May 26 on NBC and Peacock. Johnson previously joined NBC in the network’s coverage of “The Month of May” and the Indianapolis 500 in 2021. Johnson was crowned the 2022 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year after competing in the event for Chip Ganassi Racing where he started 12th and finished 28th. Additionally, Johnson will serve as an analyst on NBC Sports’ NASCAR coverage of the events at Daytona Superspeedway on Aug. 24 and Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 6, one of three playoff races in the Round of 12. He will also contribute to NBC Sports’ coverage for select NASCAR races in which he is competing this year, including the NASCAR Cup Series Championship from Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 10.

EJ All-Star: Over the years, Erik Jones has had seven NASCAR All-Star weekend appearances, with his first coming back in 2017. Of those, Jones has made the NASCAR All-Star race a total of four times with some memorable moments through the years. Jones and the No. 43 Family Dollar LEGACY MOTOR CLUB team looks to transfer this weekend through the NASCAR All Star Open for their shot at $1 million dollars.

JHN Returns: John Hunter Nemechek will return to the North Wilkesboro Speedway 0.625-mile oval this weekend for the first time since running an Allison Legacy Racing Series car at the 0.625-mile paved oval more than 12-years ago. This weekend he will be turning his first laps around the North Wilkesboro Speedway behind the wheel of a NASCAR Cup Series car. It will be the 26-year-old driver’s second attempt at a NASCAR All-Star Open event.

Throwback: Last week during Nemechek’s Race Hub appearance, he announced that this weekend’s NASCAR All-Star Weekend will feature a special scheme on the No. 42 Dollar Tree Toyota Camry XSE. The LEGACY MOTOR CLUB entry will dawn a Harry Gant scheme with the iconic green, white, and gold colors. One of the 18 career wins the Taylorsville, N.C., NASCAR veteran collected came at the North Wilkesboro Speedway on September 29, 1985.

OLIPOPPIN’ with Luke Combs: Last week, two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year and multi-platinum award winning country music star Luke Combs released a teaser for his new song, “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma”. CLUB QUOTES

John Hunter Nemechek

Driver of the No. 42 Dollar Tree Toyota Camry XSE:

With this weekend being a non-points race and knowing you need to finish top two or win the NASCAR All-Star Fan Vote to lock into the All-Star race, do you take a more aggressive approach?

“Some will probably take a more aggressive approach, some may not take as an aggressive approach, but you definitely want to run as good as you possibly can and finish top two to get in; I mean who doesn’t want to have a shot to go race for $1 million in the All-Star race.”

What are you doing to prepare for this track?

“I ran North Wilkesboro on the old pavement back in 2010 or 2011 in an Allison Legacy car, it’s definitely changed a lot since then, and now with the repave, it sounds like there’s a lot of grip, so I’m not exactly sure what to think about it, everyone’s in the same boat of going there and having to jump in and adapt really quick and hope that the setup is where they need it to be.”

What do expect the racing to be like with the new pavement vs. what you saw and heard last year in the return to the track?

“I think there’s going to be a lot of grip, not sure if we’re going to be able to move around a lot or if [the groove] is going be right along on the bottom. It definitely is going to be interesting; last year, there was grip in the patches that they put down and not a lot of grip elsewhere on the racetrack, so it is definitely going to be completely different. Last year, they had rain, so who knows, could be in for a very exciting weekend.

Ben Beshore

Crew chief of the No. 42 Dollar Tree Toyota Camry XSE:

NASCAR is returning to North Wilkesboro this weekend. With no points on the line, and knowing you need to finish in the top two of the open or win the NASCAR All-Star Fan vote, do you take a more aggressive approach than what you may during a regular season event?

“Yes, for sure. Qualifying will be important, and with the race being a shorter distance than normal, we will focus on short-run speed. “

With new pavement down on the 0.625-mile oval, what type of racing do you feel we’ll see?

“I think we’ll have to see how practice goes. Typically, repaved tracks take a while for the groove to widen out, so it may be very hard to pass unless a second lane comes in.”

What would it mean to make the NASCAR All-Star race?

“It would mean a lot to the team from a confidence standpoint. We were able to race our way into the Clash in February and hope to do the same this weekend. “

Erik Jones

Driver of the No. 43 Family Dollar Toyota Camry XSE:

How do you feel about the track’s repave going into this year’s All-Star Open race?

“North Wilkesboro this year looks a little bit different, this year it looks like we are going to have to race our way in, so that will be our first challenge, and the track is going to be quite a bit different this year with the repave. We will go through and learn that during practice and see what we need out of the race car with that, but we had a good car there last year during the race, and we were able to run up in the top 10, sixth and seventh place most of the day. So, I am excited to get back; it is a really cool race and a really cool atmosphere. I think North Wilkesboro is a great place for the All-Star race now, and hopefully, we can race our way in and go run well in the All-Star race.”

Dave Elenz

Crew chief of the No. 43 Family Dollar Toyota Camry XSE:

Will your strategy change at all because you’re in the open race this year, and how do you think the repave will change the racing style?

“Last year, it was pretty exciting to be able to go to North Wilkesboro. The old pavement provided quite a few challenges; we really didn’t know what we were going to have until we got there. This year we will have another challenge with the repave, but it should be a little more consistent and easier to get a hold of. I think the repave will provide some interesting opportunities for tire strategies, and the “open” will be a little more interesting because it will be a short race, so you’re going to want to go all out and make it to the end. It will be interesting to see how the tires play out on the repave and what the fall-off is going to be like.”

Sammy Smith Quotes
You’re running the Late Model race Wednesday night. How beneficial will that be heading into Saturday?
“It’ll be very beneficial getting laps at a new track that a lot of people probably haven’t been to with the repave. That will be big and hopefully, we can go out and capitalize on that extra track time with our No. 7 Pilot Flying J Chevrolet Silverado.”

Is it easier to prepare for this weekend now that you have a race under your belt with Brian Pattie and the No. 7 team?
“I feel really good heading into North Wilkesboro. I have a better understanding of what the truck needs balance-wise and how it drives. I also having a better feel of how the drivers in the Truck Series race. That helps a lot. I know that Brian Pattie and everyone on the No. 7 Pilot Flying J team will bring me a fast Silverado. With the repave, we’ll also be able to get a full practice, which will allow me to continue to get a better feel for the truck. I need all the practice I can get since this will only be my third time racing in the Truck Series and one of those races was on a superspeedway.”

Rajah Caruth – Driver, No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado

  • Rajah Caruth will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No. 71 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet Silverado in Saturday’s Wright Brand 250 at North Wilkesboro Speedway.
  • Caruth started 26th and finished 30th in last week’s Buckle Up South Carolina 200 at Darlington Raceway. It was his only DNF (did not finish) of the 2024 season.
  • HENDRICKCARS.COM is the online home for everything Hendrick Automotive Group. • The Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University senior started 23rd and finished 34th in last May’s Tyson 250 NCTS race at North Wilkesboro Speedway.
  • Caruth is currently sixth in the NCTS championship point standings after nine races. He has logged one pole, one win, five top-10’s and eight top-15 finishes. He’s recorded a 11.8 average start, a 10.8 average finish and completed 96 percent of the laps contested this season.
  • With his first career NCTS win and pole position earlier this season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Caruth became the third African American driver, alongside NASCAR Hall of Famer Wendell Scott and current NASCAR Cup Series regular Bubba Wallace, to win a NASCAR National Touring Series race.
  • Caruth raced his first season in NCTS in 2023, earning four top-10 finishes and coming home 16th in the division’s championship point standings.

North Wilkesboro has such a deep history within NASCAR, what does it mean to you to get to race here again?
“Honestly, it’s really special to go to North Wilkesboro because I know the history and I am a nerd about NASCAR as a whole. It’s been really cool to be part NASCAR’s return to a track with such a deep history. It shows that it’ll be there for hopefully, some years to come and can continue to foster racing in that region. It’s really special just because I’m a huge nerd about this stuff and it’s super important to remember the history within NASCAR in the years to come.”

How does the repave factor into your outlook for this weekend?
“So, that’s a really good question. It’s an unknown for everybody who didn’t get to be part of the tire test and, of course, the guys and gals who will run late models at North Wilkesboro will have a good feel, too. It’s exciting because we all have the same resources to kind of go off of, and lack thereof, because it’s a new element. I think it’ll be a good exercise for everybody. I do know I have a good set of tools to go to the racetrack with. We’ll adapt on the fly and look to be as competitive as I know we’re capable of.”

You had a tough day at Darlington. How do you bounce back after a less-than-ideal weekend?
“It’s not really hard for me to get over setbacks like that, because I’ve been through them before and it’s not something I did, you know, terribly wrong. There are obviously things I could have done better to not lose some spots on pit road or choose a different lane on the restart, but if you get wrecked out of the top 10 or better, there’s not much you can really do, especially when you didn’t cause it. It’s not super hard for me to reset just because there’s a lot of worse things that we could be struggling with. The thing is that we have speed every week and we’re competitive every week, so we just get back in our stride and keep doing what we’ve been doing to start the season. It’s time to go to a new race track, a new day, and finish out this five-race stretch with three solid races.”

Chase Purdy – Driver, No.77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado

  • Chase Purdy will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No.77 Bama Buggies Chevrolet Silverado in Saturday afternoon’s Wright Brand 250.
  • Purdy heads to North Wilkesboro Speedway 16th in the NCTS driver point standings. He started 19th and finished sixth last week at Darlington Raceway.
  • In his single start at North Wilkesboro, Purdy started 24th, finished eighth and completed all 252 laps in his Bama Buggies Chevrolet Silverado.
  • In the NCTS most recent race at a short track, Purdy drove his Bama Buggies Chevrolet to a third-place finish at Martinsville Speedway.
  • The Wright Brand 250 will mark Purdy’s 85th NCTS start and his 10th behind the wheel of Spire Motorsports’ No.77 Bama Buggies Chevrolet.
  • Purdy’s Crew Chief Jason Trinchere will be making his North Wilkesboro debut in the Wright Brand 250. In 12 NASCAR Xfinity Series short-track races, the Penn State University alumnus has called one win, an average start of second, and an average finish of fifth. His one win was in 2021 with driver A.J. Allmendinger at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Chase Purdy Quotes
Fresh surface, how do you think it’s going to affect your driving?
“I think there’s a lot of unknowns going into the weekend, so I’m relying on the sim a lot for this week. But it’s a short track and it’s going have a lot of grip, so I don’t think there will be too many surprises.”
You had a solid finish at Darlington last weekend. How do you take that finish and build consistency?
“I think by just keeping the nose clean and having a mistake free race. We have the speed, just need to capitalize on our opportunities.”

What They’re Saying (Quotes):

BRITTANY FORCE, DRIVER OF THE PEAK ANTIFREEZE & COOLANT CHEVROLET TOP FUEL DRAGSTER:

“Our team struggled last year, and we need to get our car back on track. We were lost all last season. I already feel the improvement that’s come into this season, looking at what we did last year and all the testing we’ve done this year. We’re kind of combining the last few years and trying to create our tune-up that way, combining all the good from those last few years. But it’s something you can’t do overnight, it’s always a work in progress. But this extra testing is definitely getting us closer to the ultimate goal, to turning on the win lights and getting us back into the winner’s circle.”

“Our team is very structured with how we move through the season. So we had a goal coming into the first quarter, the first five races. That we should have so many round wins. Well, the problem is we’re already behind, which is why we’ve been doing (so much) extra testing to get us moving forward quicker than what we’ve been doing this year. We need to get ahead of ourselves if we want to be competitive at that point when that Countdown (to the Championship six-race playoff) kicks off, and that is what we’re aiming to do.”

“I look forward to coming to Chicago because it’s a unique setting. This year, with my dad running PEAK and me running PEAK, it gives us the opportunity for a double-up in all-PEAK colors and gives us the opportunity to do something we’ve never been able to do.”

AUSTIN PROCK, DRIVER OF THE CORNWELL TOOLS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

On racing at Joliet this weekend…

“They’re all big races throughout the season, but this is always a good one for us. Growing up in Lansing (Mich.), (Route 66 is) kind of like a home race in a sense to have some family members and friends out there, it’s always a good time and it’s a huge race for PEAK and quite a few of our partners.”

On being the current points leader and the thought of a target on his back heading into the next part of the season…

“There’s some very challenging tracks coming up. New Hampshire is always a challenging track, you’ve got Bristol, of course, and Chicago as well. How do we keep our momentum going? I’m just excited to get back to the racetrack, sitting out of the seat for three weeks.

“I’m just excited to get back in the seat. Yeah, there are some tough tracks ahead, but we’ve also done well at some other hard tracks in the first part of the season already. This team and this car has been really successful at all those racetracks. So I’m looking forward to getting back doing what I love, driving this race car. It’s like riding a bike. it’ll all come back real quick, but we just got to keep our heads down and keep being really focused. So I’m looking forward to what should be a good weekend.”

Do you still pinch yourself at the success you’ve instantly had in Funny Car this year?

“This year has just been a blur. It’s crazy that we’re already a quarter of the way through the season. It just seems like it’s flown by, and it’s been a lot mentally to process and it just doesn’t seem like it’s really happened. So I’ve just got to keep doing the same job I’ve been doing.”

“It’s been working so far, but we’ve got a long ways to go. I’m just head down, got to stay focused, can’t get too caught up in everything surrounding you and just go up there and do everything one moment at a time and try to be perfect every moment you do something.”

JOHN FORCE, DRIVER OF THE PEAK ANTIFREEZE & COOLANT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

“This is a very important race for us. It’s our home office (PEAK is headquartered in north suburban Northbrook, IL.), but Route 66, where NHRA puts on that national event, is unbelievable. It’s fun to race there, the access to it is great, the stands wrap around so that the fans can see everything. It’s just a great place to be.”

“I’m also excited to be representing PEAK and Blue Def. And with myself, a Funny Car world champion and Brittany (Force), a Top Fuel world champion, if we were to double up wearing PEAK colors and at a PEAK race, that’ll be huge. We’d love to double up, so we’re going to be trying. And this is also a home race for my son-in-law (and crew chief), Danny Hood, who is from Chicago.”

“I’ve always said Indy (U.S. Nationals) was our granddaddy of races and, of course, the world finals at Pomona. And this is major, just as big to me because of all the things that we’re doing.”

“We’ve got a big event at PEAK’s headquarters on Wednesday, we’re going to have media all over town, TV and radio appearances and then we’re going out to the racetrack for photo shoots. So, all this is exciting. I love this race, the track and we’ve run good at it. We’re going in there with guns blazing.”

On returning to Chicago in 2023…

“I love the concept of Route 66, from the old days of the highway (Route 66 Raceway) that went from Chicago and across the country, all the way to California,” Force said. “You never want to lose a race. But you especially don’t want to lose one that’s in a market that’s as huge as Chicago. We’re excited that we’re back in Chicago because that’s where my major sponsor is. That’s where we need to be.”
