RFK Racing, Fastenal Unveil 2024 Primary Scheme

Chris Buescher’s 2024 Fastenal Scheme On-Track This Week at Phoenix Test

CONCORD, N.C. (Dec. 5, 2023) – As Chris Buescher hits the track for two days of testing at Phoenix Raceway this week, RFK and Fastenal unveils its new and improved Fastenal scheme for Buescher’s 2024 No. 17 Ford, the first unveil of its kind among the Ford Performance teams.

“First off, we’re thankful to Fastenal’s continued years of dedication to our race team and our continued success,” said Buescher, who has four wins in the last two NASCAR Cup Series seasons. “Fans across the country have grown to recognize and appreciate the iconic Fastenal blue scheme, and we’re excited to roll out a new look on that car this week in Phoenix. 2024 is already off and running, and we can’t wait to officially hit the track next February.”

Ford will have a familiar yet fresh look in 2024 as the Mustang Dark Horse heads to the top level of NASCAR. The street model of the Dark Horse was unveiled as a street car in late 2022, marking the seventh generation of the Mustang nameplate. Now, the improved look features a sleek new nose on the front end, coupled with character lines that stretch from the fenders to the door. RFK is the first known team in the NCS to unveil a 2024 scheme on the new Ford body.

Fastenal enters its 14th season as a partner of RFK in 2024 with Buescher behind the wheel for his ninth Cup season. He advanced to the Round of 8 in this season’s NASCAR Playoffs, and ultimately finished seventh in the final points standings, setting career highs in every statistical category.

The two-day Phoenix test gets underway Tuesday morning with six cars on track, and Buescher joining 2023 NASCAR Cup Champion Ryan Blaney as the two Ford participants. Stay tuned to @RFKRacing on social for coverage from Phoenix.

From the Race Track to the Auction: Stories of Legendary Cars

Photo by Tim Meyer on Unsplash

In the thrilling world of automobiles, every car holds a story, albeit some are more legendary than others. This article dives into the captivating journey of such iconic vehicles, from their glory on the racetrack to their unexpected appearance at salvage auto auctions. Car auctions are marketplaces, where damaged or recovered stolen vehicles, are sold, providing an opportunity for car enthusiasts and restorers to obtain unique cars at lower prices. We’ll explore how these auctions have become unforeseen treasure troves, where legendary cars, once thought lost or irreparable, get a second chance at life. Such cars, renowned for their make, model, history, or previous owners, hold a special place in the hearts of collectors and automobile fans alike. Join us as we delve into their fascinating stories, tracing their paths from the race tracks to the auction lots.

The Thriving World of Salvage Auto Auctions

Car auctions operate in a vibrant industry, dealing with vehicles that have been totaled, repossessed, or recovered from a theft. These auctions have experienced significant growth and profitability due to a combination of factors: the constant supply of salvage vehicles and the growing interest of buyers attracted to the potential of securing a deal. Businesses running these auctions have capitalized on this demand, creating a dynamic marketplace that successfully turns damaged and recovered cars into profit.

Buyers, ranging from individual restorers to professional mechanics, are drawn to salvage auto auctions for the opportunity they offer. For some, it is a chance to own a piece of automobile history; for others, it’s the lure of a restoration project or the prospect of finding a unique vehicle at a fraction of its original cost. Sellers, on the other hand, are provided an avenue to dispose of or monetize vehicles that would otherwise be costly to repair or difficult to sell.

In essence, auctions have cultivated a thriving ecosystem, fueling both the passion for autos and the practical needs of buyers and sellers alike.

Legendary Cars That Emerged from Salvage Auto Auctions

The Ferrari 250 GTO

The Ferrari 250 GTO is a motor racing legend, produced by Ferrari from 1962 to 1964 for homologation into the FIA’s Group 3 Grand Touring Car category. Its stunning design and unparalleled performance made it one of the most desirable cars of its time. In a surprising twist of events, a wrecked 250 GTO found its way to an auto auction after a regrettable mishap during a private racing event. The car was purchased by a dedicated restorer who recognized its potential. Today, after a meticulous restoration, the car is in prime condition. Auctioned at an astounding $70 million, this GTO holds the record for the most expensive car ever sold at a public auction.

The Shelby Daytona Coupe

The Shelby Daytona Coupe, designed by the legendary Carroll Shelby, was created to compete against the dominant Ferrari in the GT class. Only six of these beauties were built between 1964 and 1965. One of them ended up in an auto auction after it was found abandoned in a garage in California. The car was bought and restored to its original glory by a team of passionate car enthusiasts. It was last publicly auctioned in 2009, fetching a handsome price of $7.25 million, reflecting its historical significance and rarity.

The Porsche 550 Spyder

Known as the “giant killer” in racing circles, the Porsche 550 Spyder left an indelible mark in the sports car world in the 1950s. It’s been famously associated with actor James Dean, who tragically died in an accident while driving his Spyder. A Spyder was discovered in a salvage auto auction, much to the shock of the attendees. This particular vehicle had been involved in a minor accident but was expertly restored to its former splendor. The Porsche 550 Spyder, with its rich history and iconic design, commands a hefty price in today’s market, with some restored models fetching over $5 million at auction.

The Appeal of Salvage Auto Auctions for Car Enthusiasts

For car enthusiasts, the allure of salvage auto auctions lies in the opportunity to own a piece of automotive history. The potential of finding rare and valuable cars, such as a legendary Ferrari or a classic Shelby, fuels their interest. These auctions represent a treasure trove of unique vehicles, often bearing stories of grandeur from the golden era of motor racing. Beyond the potential value, there’s the thrill of the hunt – the anticipation and excitement of uncovering hidden gems within piles of salvage cars. In a nutshell, salvage auto auctions offer car enthusiasts a remarkable platform to indulge in their passion, find rare vehicles, and experience the exhilarating chase of a good find.

Risks and Rewards of Buying Legendary Cars at Salvage Auto Auctions

Venturing into salvage auto auctions, in hopes of acquiring legendary cars, presents a mixed bag of potential rewards and inherent risks. The prospect of significant profit stands as a compelling lure. For instance, a well-restored Ferrari 250 GTO or a Shelby Daytona Coupe can fetch millions at auction, yielding a substantial return on investment. However, this reward doesn’t come without challenges, particularly the arduous process of restoration. Damaged cars often require extensive, costly repairs and meticulous attention to detail to restore them to their former glory. This undertaking requires expertise, time, and financial resources, factors that may deter novice buyers. Furthermore, the importance of comprehensive research and inspection can’t be overstated. Understanding the car’s history, its condition and the extent of damage is crucial to making an informed decision. Thus, while the potential rewards are enticing, buyers must tread carefully, armed with knowledge and realistic expectations.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (December 4, 2023) – Today, Spire Motorsports announced veteran NASCAR industry executive Doug Duchardt has been named President of Spire Motorsports, effective immediately.

With over 27 years of applied experience, spanning from General Motors to leading some of the most iconic race teams on the starting grid, Duchardt is one of the sport’s most accomplished individuals and brings a championship pedigree to the organization’s Mooresville, N.C., base of operations.

He holds a Bachelor of Science and an Honorary Professional Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology, a Master of Science in Engineering from Purdue University, and an Advanced Certificate for Executives from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management.

“As Spire Motorsports continues to grow, it’s important to add impactful personnel at every level,” said Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson. “I’ve known and had a close personal relationship with Doug Duchardt for nearly 20 years. Doug’s resume and body of work speaks for itself. Having him on staff raises our competitive bar immediately. He brings a results-based work ethic to our team that will pay immediate dividends. Our expectations for the impact his presence will make across our entire organization cannot be overstated. He has a rich history with General Motors which has resulted in close and deep personal relationships at the manufacturer level and positions him firmly at the intersection of our crucial relationships with both Hendrick Motorsports and Trackhouse Racing.”

Duchardt comes to Spire Motorsports from Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) where he’s spent the last six years, first as chief operating officer and most recently as executive consultant.

In his role as executive consultant, Duchardt served as the liaison between CGR and General Motors in establishing the team’s European facility for Cadillac’s sportscar world endurance program, most notably competing in Sebring (Fla.), Portugal, Spa (Belgium), LeMans, Monza, Fuji and Bahrain. Aside from Ganassi’s world-renowned sportscar operation, Duchardt handled team strategist duties at the 2022 Indianapolis 500 effort where he charted Tony Kanaan to a third-place finish.

As COO, he was responsible for all components of competition and business development across the entire organization, including NASCAR, Indy Car and IMSA operations. In addition to strategic initiatives, Duchardt was charged with navigating and finalizing negotiations with CGR’s corporate partners.

By the end of his tenure, the Morton, Ill., native played a central role in four IndyCar championships, including a victory in the 2022 Indianapolis 500. On the sportscar side of the business, he played key roles in wins in the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Last season, Duchardt was instrumental in CGR’s podium finish at the famed 24 Hours of LeMans.

“I have been impressed with Spire Motorsports’ incremental growth since its inception,” said Duchardt. “It’s an exciting opportunity to join the team as we work toward increased competitiveness in the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. Walking into the facility you can feel the enthusiasm and energy. I am also looking forward to working with my previous teammates at Chevrolet, Trackhouse Racing and Hendrick Motorsports as Spire prepares for the 2024 season.”

Prior to his time at the helm of Ganassi’s racing endeavors, he spent 12 years with Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) – NASCAR’s standard bearer – where he was Vice President of Development before transitioning to Executive Vice President and General Manager, directing all phases of competition.

During his time with HMS, Duchardt oversaw seven NCS championships, including a one-two-three title finish in 2009 with drivers Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon. Meanwhile, Hendrick Motorsports-built engines won nine of 12 championships during his tenure.

In his role with Spire Motorsports, Duchardt will be responsible for oversight across the entire organization including competition, personnel and business operations.

Less than three years later, William Byron drove Spire Motorsports’ No. 7 Chevrolet Silverado to its inaugural NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series win on April 7, 2022, at Martinsville Speedway. CrowdStrike Racing by APR Takes Victory in Asian Le Mans Series Debut Weekend

  • George Kurtz, Colin Braun, Malthe Jakobsen win four-hour race in Malaysia
  • Race strategy, pit lane execution key in victory for No. 4 CrowdStrike ORECA LMP2
  • CrowdStrike by APR in second in LMP2 championship after opening weekend

SEPANG, Malaysia (December 4, 2023) – CrowdStrike Racing by Algarve Pro Racing (APR) wasted no time making an impact in the Asian Le Mans Series, earning a victory on Sunday in the weekend’s second four-hour race at the Circuit of Sepang in Malaysia.

George Kurtz, Colin Braun and Malthe Jakobsen piloted the No. 4 CrowdStrike ORECA-Gibson LMP2 entry to an 8.927-second victory, keyed by strategic pit calls and strong driving by the trio of racers, who combined to lead a race-high 37 of 108 laps.

Sunday’s result, paired with a sixth-place showing in Saturday’s first four-hour race, means that Kurtz, Braun and Jakobsen stand second in the LMP2 Drivers Championship after two of six races in the series.

Kurtz started the race in sixth position and had a strong opening before handing off to Braun for a double-stint in the first of what would be three safety-car periods. Braun moved from fifth to second before the CrowdStrike by APR team moved him to the lead with a mid-race pit stop that was 11 seconds quicker than the former lead car.

Braun held that lead until the team’s next-to-last stop with one hour, 23 minutes to go, which came just ahead of another safety-car period less than 10 minutes later. Braun was able to swap over to Jakobsen during the pit stop, while most of the cars were unable to make it into pitlane before the pit entry closed as the safety car emerged on the track.

Jakobsen withstood one more challenge on a late-race restart with 22 minutes left. He increased his advantage at the green from a little more than three seconds to nearly nine by the time he crossed the finish line.

The next event for the Asian Le Mans Series is February 4 from the Dubai Autodrome.

CrowdStrike Racing by APR Driver Quotes

George Kurtz: “We bounced back from a rough first race to take CrowdStrike Racing by APR’s maiden Asian Le Mans Series victory here at Sepang. The team showed resilience and gave us a fast car, and we all produced great drives that put us in a position to win.”

“To be able to regroup and bounce back when things don’t go your way is a sign of a top-class, determined team. We put our heads down and everyone did their jobs perfectly, and I couldn’t be happier with the performance. We showed up as a team to win a title. Now, we’ll see what we can do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but a win at Sepang is a good start in the right direction.”

Colin Braun: “The result in the first race wasn’t quite what we had planned, but victory in the second race is exactly what we hoped for and it was a great performance by CrowdStrike Racing by APR, George (Kurtz) and Malthe (Jakobsen). The team gave us a really fast car and we executed brilliantly. It was great to bounce back so strongly.”

Malthe Jakobsen: “It’s my first race weekend with CrowdStrike Racing by APR, and with George (Kurtz) and Colin (Braun) as my teammates, and we have all done a super good job. It’s true that the first race didn’t go as planned, but we came back stronger and jumped forward with a win in the second race at Sepang, and I believe this will put us in a position to fight at the top in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.”

Veteran Jeff Hensley will be joining TRICON Garage to serve as the crew chief of the No. 17 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro team piloted by Taylor Gray for the 2024 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season.

The news comes as the 61-year-old Hensley from Ridgeway, Virginia, is coming off a strong season as the crew chief of the No. 23 GMS Racing Chevrolet Silverado RST team piloted by Grant Enfinger. Throughout the season, the duo notched three victories, a pole, nine top-five results, 13 top-10 results, 232 laps led and an average-finishing result of 9.0. They also made the 2023 Truck Series Playoffs and transferred all the way into the Championship 4 round, where they ended up in the runner-up result in the final standings. Ultimately, the finale would serve as Hensley’s final race working at GMS Racing as GMS ceased operations at this season’s conclusion.

Hensley, who was a former Xfinity Series competitor for his family-owned team before transitioning to a career as a crew chief in 1987, has called 463 events as a Truck Series crew chief from 2004 to 2023. During this span, he notched 22 victories with six different competitors, including nine with Enfinger, and ended up with two runner-up results in the final standings, the first with Mike Skinner in 2007 and the second with Enfinger in 2023.

In addition, Hensley has appeared in 427 events as a crew chief in the Xfinity circuit from 1987-2001. During the stretch, he achieved 11 victories and the 1990 series’ championship with Chuck Brown. Following the 2001 season, Hensley, who was working for his family-owned team, worked for Arrington Manufacturers before reassuming his role as a crew chief with a direct focus within the Truck Series.

The 2024 Truck Series season is set to mark Hensley’s first with a Toyota organization since the 2017 season that occurred with ThorSport Racing and Enfinger. It will also mark his first season paired with Taylor Gray, who notched a career-best runner-up finish at Kansas Speedway in September, three top-five results and eight top 10 results while competing in all but three events this past season before settling in 15th place in the 2023 driver’s standings. Having made 33 career starts in the Truck Series for the past three seasons, the 18-year-old Gray from Artesia, New Mexico, is set to mount for his first series’ victory and Playoff bid in 2024 while also making his series’ debut at Daytona International Speedway in February.

With his plans for next season set, Hensley is set to make his first appearance as a crew chief for TRICON Garage and Taylor Gray in the 2024 Craftsman Truck Series’ season-opening Fresh From Florida 250 at Daytona. The event is scheduled to occur on February 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

Petty Family to Celebrate 75th Anniversary in Racing in 2024

New Logo Unveiled Along with Plans to Celebrate Legacy with Fans

LEVEL CROSS, N.C. (December 4, 2023) – The Petty family will celebrate 75 years of racing in 2024. Off the cusp of NASCAR’s own diamond anniversary in 2023, the Petty family will now highlight their own memories from their first 75 years, which began in 1949.

Lee Petty, the family patriarch, and his wife Elizabeth began their stock car business after Lee learned NASCAR was hosting its first sanctioned race in Charlotte, N.C. Lee finished 17th that summer day and began an enterprise spanning across four generations.

Over the past seven decades, the Petty family helped define the sport. From behind the wheel and under the hood, to the garage and front office, the Petty’s paved the way and gave opportunities to many individuals – drivers, crew chiefs, mechanics, fabricators and more – to hone their skills and go on to become leaders in their respective trades. Their innovation, dedication, philanthropy and passion helped grow NASCAR into a national sport, all while staying true to their small-town roots. Their legacy has left countless memories, stories and tales to share with fans for years to come.

“My father is a walking encyclopedia of NASCAR,” said Kyle Petty. “He was there with my grandfather, grandmother and uncle Maurice at the first NASCAR race in Charlotte in 1949 and our family has been going ever since. There isn’t anything our family hasn’t seen in NASCAR.”

“75 years in the sport is an incredible milestone for our family, especially when it all began as a family business,” said “The King” Richard Petty. “Spending 2024, celebrating the success and contributions to the sport of racing that started with my mom and dad, then my brother Maurice, cousin Dale Inman, then to Kyle, Timmy, Ritchie, Mark, onto Adam and now Thad. We are all looking forward to sharing these stories with the fans.”

Ritchie Petty, son of Maurice, has seen the Petty family evolve in the sport.

“It’s special because it took the whole family to make it all work with such a huge amount of success,” said Ritchie. “Nobody in the family was more important than any other and from my grandfather to my dad and all my cousins, we felt involved in the success and the growth of the Petty family and NASCAR.”

The Petty’s 75th Anniversary in racing includes the debut of a new commemorative logo that will be featured prominently next year at all Petty-related events and at the track on all LEGACY MOTOR CLUB race cars in 2024.

The year-long celebration will also include exclusive digital and social media content never seen before from the Petty family photo and video archives. This unique content will be featured on the @therichardpetty, @pettybrothersracing, @kylepetty, @pettymuseum and @pettysgarage social media accounts as well as a soon-to-launch YouTube channel.
