Toyota Racing – NCTS Playoff Media Day Quotes – Corey Heim – 08.08.23

Toyota Racing – Corey Heim
NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Quotes

CHARLOTTE (August 8, 2023) – TRICON Garage driver Corey Heim was made available to media as part of the NASCAR Truck Series Playoff Media Day on Tuesday:

COREY HEIM, No. 11 Safelite Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

How do you continue the momentum going into the Playoffs?

“I would say our consistency over the last two or three months has been really good – just being able to collect a lot of stage points and get some top-fives and wins along the way. I think as long as we are able to continue that and continue the momentum heading into the Playoffs, we will be in really good shape.”

How much does the regular season championship mean to you?

“I think from a logistical viewpoint as far as the amount of Playoff points that put us ahead – it definitely means a lot. Just being able to have that buffer going into the Playoffs, and not have that close counter with the Playoff cutline, right from the start. I feel like it is nice to start the Playoffs off with a little less stress and being able to go from there. I feel like at the same time, if you have one bad race, one DNF and you are kind of back to earth again. I feel like that there’s positives and negatives to it. I think that kind of stems from the Playoff format as it is, but it is certainly not a bad thing to be the regular season champion, but I guess there could be more to put us ahead.”

What do you and your team have to do to make the Championship 4?

“Well, I think he wrecked like twice in the last round, so that’s a good place to start and not do that. Just do what we’ve been doing – not put ourselves in bad positions, keep on getting stage points and finishing races well. I think these last couple months have been a really good display of consistency for us and as long as we carry that through and hopefully collect some wins along the way, we will be in good shape.”

Is there anything specific that you are working on as a driver?

“The main thing is just closing races out. There has been a couple of instances this year where we’ve led the most laps, and had the best truck, and I feel like we kind of faded at the end. As an organization, we’ve been working on our longer runs and how to improve that on a weekly basis. As a driver, I think I have to get better too at keeping the tires on it and pacing myself for the end of the race, just to put ourselves in a better position come 10 laps to go. If we have a weak point, I feel like that is our weak point right now – is just finishing races out, but if anything, that’s it.”

How important is it start the Round of 10 strong?

“It’s vital to start the round right and have a good run at IRP. That’s a tough place, because there is just not a lot of experienced drivers there, so I feel like there is going to be some chaos ensuing for the first couple of stages, and then I think everybody kind of settles it out in the third stage for the most part. Then you have Milwaukee – that is a completely unknown race track for most people as well. It is going to be super important for us as drivers to be on top of it and prepare the best we possibly can, because you can’t really rely on experience, because most people have little to none at those race tracks, but then we go to Kansas, which is kind of the opposite, where everyone has laps there, that’s in the Playoffs. We raced there in the Spring already, so everyone is in the same mindset on what they have to do better.”

What is your approach to the Playoffs, and did you get any advice?

“I feel like we try to take it one race at a time. I’ve never really tried to be a type of person that projects throughout the year. I feel like, people have told me the same thing – take it one race at a time, don’t stress about the next one until you get there. I’ve been able to lean on my crew chief Scott Zipadelli a lot with his Playoff experience. I did kind of race the Owner’s Playoffs last year with KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) with the No. 51 truck. I raced every Playoff race, so I got a taste of what that is like, but it’s certainly a lot more stressful being in drivers and owners, so taking it one race at a time is the most important thing to me.”

What expectation do you have for your first Playoff run?

“I feel like just going out and being on top of it from the very beginning is going to be really important. Just being able to unload at IRP in practice and being on top of it as soon as we get there. Have a good practice, qualify well, get a good pit selection and just run up front all race. If you put yourself in a hole early, it’s really hard to recover from that, so I think just being in the right mindset going into IRP and following that up with Milwaukee and Kansas, and then the next two rounds is going to be very important.”

How important was it to have the duel with Kyle Busch in Pocono?

“I think for me it just shows that nothing is guaranteed. We had the race won coming to the white flag. I saw him like 10 truck lengths back in the mirror going into (turn) one. I thought we were in good shape, and the next thing you know, he’s blowing my doors off. I think just to always be on top of it. You can never take a deep breath and call the races quits, not that I did, but I feel like it really puts it in perspective at the same time. It really shows you have to be on it, every single race. There is no time for relaxing, you just have to be mentally aware of everyone at all times.”

Ford Performance NASCAR – Indianapolis Motor Speedway / Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park Advance

INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY / LUCAS OIL INDIANAPOLIS RACEWAY PARK NOTES

Friday, August 11 – NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series @ LOR, 9 p.m. ET (FS1)

Saturday, August 12 – NASCAR XFINITY Series @ IMS, 5:30 p.m. ET (USA)

Sunday, August 13 – NASCAR Cup Series @ IMS, 2:30 p.m. ET (NBC)

Indiana is the all-inclusive stop for the three major NASCAR series entering a pivotal point in each of the series with playoffs on the line. While the Cup and Xfinity Series look to build at the Brickyard of the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Craftsman Truck Series will neighbor them at Lucas Oil Raceway Park.

Chase Briscoe: “I feel like Indianapolis in general, for every race car driver, is special. But, when you’re a Hoosier and grew up about an hour away, there’s even more significance. I put a lot of pressure on myself to go to Indiana and perform. I get to race in front of a lot of fans and family that don’t get to see me the rest of the year. There is definitely a lot of emphasis on that weekend. I think it is for the whole field, but especially if you’re from Indiana.”

Ryan Preece: “For me, I enjoy the road courses, and I think it’s another opportunity – for sure. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Brickyard and the oval, but I think the road racing definitely can kind of put a variable in there that maybe we can squeak one out.”

Austin Cindric: “I’m excited for Indy. I think we certainly have some work to do on our road course package to get us into good enough form to win races. I think we have some good ideas coming into the week. It’s a really important stretch for me, to try to win to get into the playoffs. Winning in Indy would be a double whammy.”

Todd Gilliland: “I think the next three races are super important. Looking at Indy though, this was probably our strongest race last year – unload to finish, and we finished fourth there. I think we can go there and honestly compete – Top-10 or top-five all day. Those are our expectations. We know, to make the playoffs, it’s going to be tough. But, we need to go out there and win one of these next three races. I think Indy can be a really magical place to do that.”

Harrison Burton: “It’s a fun road course, and it’s one of my favorite road courses. My best finish in the Cup Series was there, so I’m trying to back that up when I go. Any time you can get on Indianapolis’ racetrack, it’s a special moment. It’s easy to take that for granted when you race at all these amazing places every weekend. But, it’s always special at Indy.”

GURNEY IS FORD’S ALL-TIME ROAD COURSE WINNER

NASCAR has competed on 16 different road courses during its history and Ford has had 21 drivers win 33 times overall. Dan Gurney leads the way with five, which included four straight wins at Riverside International Raceway from 1963-66 while driving for the Wood Brothers. Mark Martin, on the strength of three straight triumphs at Watkins Glen International from 1993-95, is second.

FORD’S ALL-TIME CUP ROAD COURSE WINNERS

5 – Dan Gurney

4 – Mark Martin

2 – Fireball Roberts, Marvin Panch, Parnelli Jones, Ricky Rudd, Marcos Ambrose

1 – Chuck Stevenson, Eddie Gray, Richard Petty, A.J. Foyt, Bobby Allison, Bill Elliott, Davey Allison, Geoffrey Bodine, Ernie Irvan, Rusty Wallace, Carl Edwards, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Blaney.

FORD’S ACTIVE WINNERS

There are three current drivers who have won a NASCAR Cup Series race on a road course with Ford. The most recent winner was Ryan Blaney, who captured the inaugural event at the Charlotte Roval in 2018. Kevin Harvick, who goes into this weekend with 25 career Ford victories, got his first with the Blue Oval in 2017 when he won at Sonoma. Joey Logano scored his Cup victory at Watkins Glen International in 2015, which completed a weekend sweep after he won the NASCAR XFINITY Series race one day earlier.

OTHER FORD WINNERS

Besides the drivers mentioned above, Ford has five other competitors who have won on a road course in either the NASCAR Cup or NASCAR XFINITY Series. Brad Keselowski (Watkins Glen NXS with Ford, 2013); Chris Buescher (Mid-Ohio NXS with Ford, 2014); Michael McDowell (Road America NXS, 2016); Chase Briscoe (Charlotte Roval, 2018 and Indianapolis, 2020); and Austin Cindric (Road America NXS, 2020).

HERBST HOT AGAIN

With only five races remaining in the regular season, Riley Herbst has picked a good time to regain the form that saw him start the campaign with six consecutive top-10 finishes. Herbst has registered finishes of fourth, fifth and sixth in his last three races and moved from 11th to 9th in the series point standings. That has resulted in him being 40 points ahead of the cutoff as he looks to join fellow Ford driver Cole Custer, who clinched his postseason spot after winning in Portland and Chicago, in the 12-driver playoff field.

PLAYOFF OPENER

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series opens their postseason this weekend as the first of seven races to determine the 2023 champion takes place at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ford has four drivers contending for the title, including three former series champions. Zane Smith is looking to defend his crown and make the Championship 4 for a fourth consecutive season while Matt Crafton is trying to tie NASCAR Hall of Famer Ron Hornaday Jr. for the most career series titles with four. Crafton’s ThorSport teammate, Ben Rhodes, could become only the fifth driver to win multiple truck series championships while Ty Majeski tries to claim his first.

The famed short track will begin the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series playoffs. Smith and the team are the second seed heading into the seven-race playoff run. Smith is only eight points out of the lead.

It will be a one-day show for the No. 38 Boot Barn Ford team. Track activity will begin on Friday with practice and qualifying at 3:30 p.m. ET. Friday’s 200 lap race is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET.

COMPETITION NOTES

Beginning their quest as a back-to-back series champion, Smith and the No. 38 Boot Barn team will need to advance through two rounds of elimination and be one of the top four in points heading to the season finale in Phoenix.

The team starts in a good position and heads to a short track where they have been strong this season. Smith and the team won the pole at Bristol (dirt) and Martinsville and finished third at both Martinsville at Richmond. They were also very fast at North Wilkesboro before an accident.

Smith has one previous start at IRP in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, finishing third.

CREW CHIEF CHRIS LAWSON

“I think everyone on our team likes short track racing. It’s a lot of fun for our series. And Zane has proven himself on these tracks. It’s a good track for us to start this playoff run.”

DRIVER ZANE SMITH

“We’ve had an up-and-down season where we’ve had to fight through some adversity. That has only made us better as we begin this playoff run. I think we’re still bringing fast trucks and executing well. We just need to keep doing that.”

KELLOGG’S FROSTED FLAKES® LOOKS TO HAVE A GR-R-REAT WEEKEND AT THE INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY ROAD COURSE

HARRISBURG, N.C. (August 8, 2023) – This weekend Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes® is giving 2023 DAYTONA 500 CHAMPION Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and the No. 47 Kroger® Racing Camaro team the sweet spark they need to go all in for the Verizon 200 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course on Sunday, August 13th.

“It’s really cool that we’ll be featuring both Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes and Tony the Tiger on our race car,” said Stenhouse Jr. “I’ve ran into Tony on his journey a couple of times at Kroger store appearances. We’re looking forward to having his iconic face on the No. 47 for the road course race at Indianapolis.”

Now is the perfect time for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes to come on board as the team fine-tunes their NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs playbook with only three races remaining in the regular season.

Despite the limited time, the team has crucial objectives to achieve before the 10-race Playoffs that begin on Sunday, September 3rd at Darlington Raceway.

“We’re locked in the Playoffs, but when we left Daytona we had a goal to act like we don’t have the Daytona 500 win and to get in the Playoffs based on points,” said Stenhouse Jr. “We still have three races left and that’s a goal of ours to check that box. We will be focused on that even though we are locked into the Playoffs. My guys have been doing a good job. With three races remaining, we’re still cleaning some things up and getting ready for the Playoffs.”

First, the 14-turn, 2.439-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course is in their sights, and the past two years Stenhouse Jr. has finished 11th and 13th respectively. Stenhouse Jr.’s best road course finish this season is 7th-place at Circuit of the Americas. He also had a respectable 12th-place finish at Sonoma Raceway while the Chicago Street Race was more of a learning experience for everyone.

“We’ve had some decent finishes at road courses this year,” said Stenhouse Jr. “We just need to maximize our day and make sure we make no mistakes to leave with a solid finish again.”

Stenhouse Jr. has two top-five and 7 top-10 finishes in addition to winning the Daytona 500. As an athlete, he’s played all types of sports growing up and finally settled on racing as his career path. Recently, he learned about Mission Tiger that launched in 2019 with a $1 million commitment to DonorsChoose. Thanks to consumers across the country, students at middle schools have better access to play sports and Mission Tiger has impacted over one million students.

“Kids are quitting sports by age 11 due to an economic crunch that cuts access and opportunities for them to play and just have fun,” said Laura Newman, Sr. Director of Brand Marketing at Kellogg Company. “Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes understands the vital role both fun and funding play in keeping kids in the game, so we’ve called on some of the most fun and talented athletes to join our Mission Tiger team to help us bring fun back to youth sports and deliver donations to local middle schools.”

“I played all kinds of sports growing up and finally decided on racing, and I love it,” said Stenhouse Jr. “Also, I like the impact Mission Tiger is having on middle school sports projects that are fulfilled by Tony’s partner, DonorsChoose. It’s simple to support Tony’s mission too.”

Stenhouse Jr. is right. For every Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes box purchased, a $2 donation is sparked by uploading a receipt via MissionTiger.com. Visit DonorsChoose.org/MissionTiger to learn about how donated money goes directly to middle school programs for needs teachers and coaches have identified.

Live coverage of the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard begins on Sunday, August 13th at 2:30 PM ET on NBC.

TDJF’s Driven to Give Gloves Program Spotlights Bristol Night Race with 60 Participating Drivers

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 8, 2023) – The Driven to Give Gloves auction is returning in a big way in 2023, the Dale Jr. Foundation announced today, showcasing one of the largest lineups of participating drivers in the program’s 10-year history. Among the many noteworthy participants are Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, William Byron, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano and Martin Truex Jr.

A total of 60 NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series drivers will partake in the program during the Bristol Motor Speedway race weekend (Sept. 15-16) by wearing Earnhardt Jr.-inspired skeleton gloves in their respective races. Following the event, each pair of race-used gloves will be signed by both Earnhardt Jr. and the driver who wore them and will be auctioned off to raise awareness and funds for the Dale and Amy Earnhardt Fund at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Since its inception in 2017, Dale, Amy and their legion of fans have raised nearly $2 million to help fund critical research in the fields of pediatric injury rehabilitation, research and prevention. In its six years of existence, the Dale and Amy Earnhardt Fund at Nationwide Children’s Hospital has funded research to show the positive impact of therapy dogs on children recovering from injuries as well as a study on how to improve the care of concussions in young children under the age of 3.

The internet auction will begin on Friday, Sept. 15 at 11:30 a.m. ET and continue through Monday, Sept. 18 at 11 p.m. ET via Pristine Auctions. Bidding will start at $30 for each pair of gloves and bids are allotted in increments of $25. Once purchased, the gloves will be shipped to winning bidders approximately four weeks after the auction ends, along with the Certificate of Authenticity.

Last year the program raised $62,000 and has become a mainstay of The Dale Jr. Foundation’s annual efforts to support Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the courageous patients and their families in the area of pediatric injury rehabilitation, research, and prevention.

The Earnhardts have long been proponents of the work done at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
