Matt Mills – No. 51 J.F. Electric Silverado Craftsman Trucks Richmond Preview

Matt Mills: Driver, No. 51 J.F. Electric Chevrolet

 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Overview:

Event: Worldwide Express 250, Race 16 of 23, 250 Laps – 70/70/110; 187.5 Miles

Location: Richmond Raceway (0.75-mile D-shaped oval)

Date/Broadcast: July 29, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Meet Matt:

Matt Mills will make his Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) debut behind the wheel of the No. 51 Silverado in Saturday’s Worldwide Express 250 at Richmond Raceway. Saturday’s start will be the first of a two-race deal with KBM that also will see him behind the wheel of the No. 51 at The Milwaukee Mile Speedway Aug. 27.

J.F. Electric, an electrical contractor that’s in the business of creating connections, will be the primary sponsor adorning Mill’s Silverado for both events. Mills will also carry associate sponsorship from Utilitra, a women-owned utility and technology solutions provider with a diverse team of specialized professionals, and Thompson Electric, a full-service electrical contracting company, for his two-race schedule.

The 26-year-old driver, who was born two hours from Richmond in Lynchburg, Va., has made 20 career starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series including five this season. He registered a season-best 19th-place finish in the Truck Series’ event at World Wide Technology Raceway in June. He produced a career-best starting position of fourth at Michigan International Speedway in 2018 and a career-best 15th-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2022.

In the NASCAR Xfinity Series, the Virginia native has made 121 career starts with a best result of 10th coming at Daytona International Speedway in 2019. He also made one NASCAR Cup Series start at Kansas Speedway in 2021. Mills has made seven Xfinity Series starts at Richmond, registering a track-best 13th-place finish twice. He has not competed in a Truck Series race at Richmond.

KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch, who claimed KBM’s first-ever Truck Series victory at Nashville Superspeedway in April of 2010, collected his organization’s 100th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory last Saturday at Pocono in the No. 51 Silverado. The No. 51 team currently ranks seventh in the Craftsman Truck Series owner’s point standings. Across 16 starts in 2023, the team has recorded two wins, one pole, 170 laps led, six top-five and nine top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 12.2. Entering the final race of the regular season, they sit 62 points above the cutoff line for making the owner’s playoffs without a new winner this week and 50 points above the cutoff line if there is a new owner winner this week.

Veteran crew chief Brian Pattie is calling the shots for the No. 51 team this year in his first season at KBM after spending the last 14 seasons atop the pit box in the NASCAR Cup Series. In the Cup Series, his drivers produced six wins, nine poles, 57 top-five and 131 top-10 finishes across 528 starts. In 2012, he guided Clint Bowyer to three victories and a runner-up finish in the Cup Series championship standings. In 2017, he guided Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to two wins and a berth in the playoffs. The Florida native has also recorded 11 wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and now has two wins as a crew chief in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Saturday will be Pattie’s first time calling a Truck Series race at Richmond Raceway. He won the 2012 September Cup Series race at Richmond with Bowyer.

Jack Wood will return to the No. 51 Chevrolet Aug. 11 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Matt Mills, Driver Q&A:

What do you think the differences between driving an Xfinity car and a truck will be at Richmond?

“In the truck I feel like I’ll be able to be a tad more aggressive off the corners. In the Xfinity car, being able to feather the throttle off the corners kind of fits my driving style not having to be so aggressive and attacking every lap. Hopefully, the style of driving the Xfinity car will be able to transfer over to the truck. I think you’ll have to be a little bit more aggressive with the truck but still feel like you have an egg under the throttle and make sure that you take care of your tires. It’s usually a race where you have to be smooth throughout the race and be there at the end.”

Have you set any goals for this weekend?

“The way I look at it is I want to prove that I’m not wasting this opportunity. A top 10 would be good, top five would be great and if I’m able to win it would be a dream come true. Really, this is going to be a learning curve for me. It’s going to be a great experience and kind of open up my eyes to the sport and see how the upper echelon teams operate. I feel like I need to go out there and not make a fool of myself, gain respect and take everything that I learn this weekend at Richmond and go out and be even better when we show up at Milwaukee.”

Matt Mills Career Highlights:

  • Finished 38th in his lone NASCAR Cup Series start at Kansas Speedway in 2021.
  • Has recorded one top-10 finish across 121 career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts, which came at Daytona International Speedway in July of 2019.
  • Has produced an average finish of 25.8 across 20 career starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Produced a career-best starting position of fourth at Michigan International Speedway in 2018 and a career-best 15th-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2022.

Kurt Busch picked up the team’s lone NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at the Virginia track in April of 2012.
  • KBM holds the Craftsman Truck Series records for most career wins (100) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch picked up his organization’s first-ever win at Nashville Superspeedway in April of 2010 and also picked up its 100th Truck Series victory at Pocono Raceway in July of 2023. In addition to collecting a series-record seven owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).

Chase Purdy- No. 4 Bama Buggies Silverado Craftsman Trucks Richmond Preview

Chase Purdy: Driver, No. 4 Bama Buggies Chevrolet

 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Overview:

Event: Worldwide Express 250, Race 16 of 23, 250 Laps – 70/70/110; 187.5 Miles

Location: Richmond Raceway (0.75-mile D-shaped oval)

Date/Broadcast: July 29, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

‘Chase’n a Playoff Spot:

Chase Purdy and the No. 4 Bama Buggies team head to Richmond Raceway for Saturday’s Worldwide Express 250. Purdy enters the final race of the regular season 13th in the Truck Series point standings, 54 points below the cutoff line, putting him in a must-win situation to make the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series playoffs. The Mississippi native entered the 2022 season having never earned a top-five result in Truck Series action but has produced two across 15 races in his first season at Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM), including a career-best runner-up finish at Texas Motor Speedway in April. He has already produced a career-high seven top-10 finishes this season, after posting just two each in 2021 and 2022.

Purdy has recorded an average finish of 7.2 and finished inside the top 10 on all four paved ovals that are less than 1.3 miles in length raced in the Truck Series so far this season. His best result on those tracks was a fifth-place finish at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in June.

The 23-year-old driver is in his third full-time season in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and first with KBM. He enters Saturday’s race having totaled two top-five and 12 top-10 finishes across his 67 career Truck Series starts. Across two Truck Series starts at Richmond, Purdy has an average finish of 21.0 with a best result of 14th coming in last year’s race. A KBM driver has won the last two Truck Series races at Richmond. John Hunter Nemechek won in 2021 and Chandler Smith was victorious last year.

Purdy finished 16th in the Truck Series final standings in 2022 after competing in 22 of the 23 events. He posted two top-10 finishes and nine laps led, with a season-best finish of seventh coming at Talladega Superspeedway in October.

Jimmy Villeneuve is atop the pit box for Purdy and the No. 4 Chevrolet team this season. Prior to being promoted to crew chief for the 2023 season, Villeneuve had served as a Truck Chief at KBM since the 2017 season and in that role was a part of 18 wins, a driver’s championship with Christopher Bell in 2017 and the 2019 owner’s championship with the No. 51 team. This will be Villeneuve’s first race calling the shots for a race at Richmond.

Bama Buggies, your one-stop shop for all the biggest names in powersports and utility vehicles, will be the primary sponsor on Purdy’s No. 4 Chevrolet Saturday night and for the majority of the events on the 2023 schedule. They are Central Alabama’s powersports experts, serving as an authorized dealer of Polaris, Slingshot, and Seadoo.
Chase Purdy, Driver Q&A:

What is your approach heading into Saturday’s race?

“I would say our approach is to do everything we can to put ourselves in position to win. That’s our only option to make the playoffs and that’s what we plan to do.”

Is there a track that you’ve raced at in any series that is similar to Richmond?

“Richmond is similar to 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola (Florida) in a lot of ways. It’s a worn out short track where you have to manage and save tires and be there at the end of the race. I’ve had a lot of strong runs at 5 Flags — won the Snowflake and almost won the Derby — so I feel like Richmond is a place where I can go out and compete for the win.”

Chase Purdy Career Highlights:

  • Across 67 career Truck Series starts, has produced 20 laps led, two top-five and 12 top-10 finishes. Posted a career-best runner-up finish at Texas Motor Speedway in April of 2023.
  • Finished 16th in Truck Series championship standings in 2022.
  • Finished fourth in the 2018 ARCA Menard’s Series championship standings after recording 84 laps led, 10 top-five and 14 top-10 finishes.
  • Earned the 2017 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East rookie of the year honors and finished fourth in the championship standings after posting four poles, 200 laps led, five top-five and eight top-10 finishes across 14 starts.
  • Won the prestigious Snowflake 100 Pro Late Model race at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla., in Dec. of 2018.
  • Chase Purdy’s No. 4 Chevrolet Silverado RST:

KBM-56: The No. 4 Bama Buggies team will unload KBM-56 for Saturday’s race at Richmond. This chassis has two career victories across 18 starts, most recently with John Hunter Nemechek at Kansas Speedway last September. Nemechek also won with KBM-56 at Pocono Raceway in June of 2021. Purdy has piloted this Silverado twice this year, with a best result of eighth coming at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers have produced two wins, six top-five and six top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 7.9 across nine Truck Series starts at Richmond. Chandler Smith won last year’s race at Richmond and John Hunter Nemechek was victorious in 2021.
  • The No. 4 has 18 career victories at KBM and was the number for both of the organization’s driver championships.

Zane Smith and the No. 38 Boot Barn Ford F-150 Team Richmond Raceway Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

Zane Smith and the No. 38 Ford F-150 team head to the Richmond (Va.) Raceway to close out the regular season of the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series season.

Boot Barn returns to the No. 38 F-150 this weekend. The popular scheme will adorn the truck for the first of two consecutive races this summer as they will also carry the team to the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoffs at the Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Track activity will begin with practice and qualifying on Friday evening beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET. Saturday’s 250-lap race is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

COMPETITION NOTES

Finishing 34th at the Pocono Raceway, Smith and the No. 38 team are looking to rebound this Saturday evening.

The team looks to improve on last year’s run when Smith finished ninth. Smith has never finished outside the top-15 at the track in the truck series.

CREW CHIEF CHRIS LAWSON

“Richmond is a unique challenge. It’s a short track but it’s really fast. The frontstretch is almost a long sweeping turn and then the turns are banked enough to carry your momentum down the backstretch with a lot of speed. So, you are working on a lot of handling and downforce while also knowing that you need to save tires and try to keep the brakes cool. It’s a challenge, but it is a great track and usually an exciting race.”

DRIVER ZANE SMITH

“I have had good runs at Richmond, but never that top-five or a win. That has to be the goal this weekend as we try and get ready for another playoff run.

“It’s great to see Boot Barn on the truck for two big races for us. It is always a favorite scheme.”

Pocono Recap: Noah Gragson qualified in the 32nd position at Pocono Raceway. He raced his way into the top-15 as the team fought a tight racecar throughout most of the 400-mile event. Gragson felt the team made progress throughout the race and thought a top-20 was in the cards. A late race restart shuffled Gragson to 22nd where he ultimately finished the race under caution.

Xfinity Success at Richmond: Gragson has seven starts in the Xfinity Series at Richmond Raceway. He has accomplished three top-five and five top-10 finishes. Most notably, Gragson’s 2021 win on Sept. 11 brought forth a special celebration. Gragson was only three years old when the attacks of September 11th took place. In honor to celebrate his victory he wrapped himself in the American Flag and climbed the fronstretch fence with his team, saluting the fans and those who have served.

The vote will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 2 when a 61-person panel will meet to select next year’s inductees. The 62nd vote goes to winners of a NASCAR.com Fan Vote (www.nascar.com/halloffame). The fan vote is currently open and will close on July 30 at 12:00 a.m. ET.

Quoting Noah: “Richmond was a great track for me in Xfinity and we had a crash there in the spring so we didn’t get to finish the race. Going to tracks for the second time this season will be helpful as we have notes from the previous races. Hopefully last week’s finish in Pocono, and not having any in-race issues, will carry over to this weekend and a solid outcome.”

Pocono in the Rearview: Jones started 24th at Pocono and quickly took the United States Air Force Chevrolet to the front, earning stage points at the conclusion of Stage 1 by finishing in the 10th position. After a strategic call from crew chief Dave Elenz, the No. 43 team went into fuel strategy mode. Jones ran as high as third during the 400-mile event, finishing ninth, collecting his fourth top-10 finish of the season.

The No. 43 LEGACY at Richmond: Having a NASCAR Hall of Fame predecessor like Richard Petty in the No. 43 car has been inspiring for Jones. “The King” had 61 starts at Richmond compiling 13 wins, 34 top-five, and 41 top-10 finishes. Petty has eight poles and an all-time high record 5,136 laps led at the 0.75-mile asphalt track.

Xfinity Series at Richmond: Jones has an excellent track record at Richmond in the Xfinity Series. In his four entries, Jones has an average start of 3.8 and an average finish of 11.3. Jones has finished outside of the top-five just once after being collected in a wreck in 2016, where he started on the pole and led for 17 laps.

Best So Far: Jones’ best run in the NASCAR Cup Series at Richmond Raceway came in 2017. After starting in the 10th position he ran in the top-10 throughout the majority of the race. He finished Stage 1 in seventh; Stage 2 in third; and his race finish was sixth.

Dave at Richmond: Dave Elenz has a solid record at Richmond in the Xfinity Series coaching seven different drivers. Elenz has two wins – one each with Noah Gragson and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. at JR Motorsports. Additionally, his drivers have a record of three top-five and nine top-10 finishes, with an average starting position of 6.9 and an average finishing position of 10.2.

Quoting Erik Jones: “Richmond has been okay, kind of an up and down place, but the overall track itself is just like that for everyone. You’re either going to hit on it well, but if you are a little bit off, it seems like you’re way off. I thought we had some work to do there from the spring, I think we have some different ideas and different things that can help us out. We have had some solid speed there at times in the NextGen cars, we just haven’t been able to put it together. I am hoping this is the one where we can do that and put it all together. Looking back on my career there have been some races where I feel like we were running well there, and I know the feeling that I had. So, I am just trying to get back to that and put it all together to have a good one at Richmond.”

Toyota Racing – Weekly Preview – 07.26.23

This Week in Motorsports: July 24-30, 2023

· NCS/NCTS: Richmond Raceway – July 29-30

· NXS: Road America – July 29

· NHRA: Sonoma Raceway – July 30

· ARCA West: Shasta Speedway – July 29

PLANO, Texas (July 26, 2023) – Toyota has another busy weekend in motorsports with five races across the country.

NASCAR National Series – NCS | NXS | NCTS

Hamlin is milestone man… Denny Hamlin crossed off two major milestones on Sunday – one for himself and one for Toyota. For Hamlin, he was the 15th driver in NASCAR history to earn 50 NASCAR Cup Series wins, while for Toyota, it was the 600th NASCAR national series victory. After hitting these major milestones, Hamlin returns to his home track this weekend – Richmond Raceway. Hamlin has had a ton of success at home with four wins at the track, including the spring race last season.

Truex continues to lead… Martin Truex Jr. added to his Cup Series points lead with another strong run at Pocono Raceway. Truex comes into Richmond with a 30-point advantage with five races to go in the regular season. Truex has three wins at Richmond, including a sweep of the races in 2019. Truex led 56 laps and finished 11th in the spring race at Richmond earlier this season.

Bell strong at Richmond… Christopher Bell is looking for his first Cup Series win at Richmond Raceway, but it has been a strong track for the Oklahoma-native. He has run six races in the Cup Series at Richmond with four top-fives and five top-10 finishes. Bell’s best result, a runner-up finish, came in this race one season ago. Bell also owns three Xfinity Series wins at Richmond.

Smith adds to top-10 streak… Sammy Smith added to his top-10 streak with a sixth-place finish at Pocono Raceway on Saturday. Smith has now finished in the top-10 four consecutive races, and heads to Road America where he made his Xfinity Series debut one season ago. The 19-year-old continues to hold down a playoff berth on the strength of his race win at Phoenix earlier this season.

Heim making history… Corey Heim looks to make history on Saturday evening at Richmond Raceway. Heim has a 42-point advantage in the regular season standings heading to the finale at Richmond Raceway. If he’s able to clinch the title, it would be the first time in the Playoff-era that a driver has won the regular season title despite not competing in every event. Heim, who missed Gateway due to illness, received a NASCAR playoff waiver and has maintained the points lead on the strength of 12 top-10 finishes in 14 races and an incredible 7.1 average finish. His top-10 total is a series-best, and he also leads the series in average finish by over two positions.

Friesen looks to earn Playoff berth… Stewart Friesen comes into Richmond Raceway just nine points out of the Playoffs. Friesen looked like he was headed above the cutline in Pocono before he was taken out in a late-race incident. Friesen has three starts at Richmond Raceway and has finished in the top-15 in every event.

NHRA – Top Fuel | Funny Car

200 for Torrence… Steve Torrence was the guy who got it done for Toyota, earning the manufacturer its 200th NHRA victory. For Torrence, it was his first win of the season and vaulted him into the Top Fuel points lead, just four points ahead of fellow Toyota driver Justin Ashley.

Todd continues to roll… J.R. Todd advanced to the final round in Seattle on Sunday for the first time since Gainesville. The former champion now has finished in the semi-finals or better four of the last five events and heads to a special place for him as he owns a Top Fuel and Funny Car victory at Sonoma Raceway.

Team Funny Car closing in on Supra Showdown season-long win… Team Toyota Funny Car will try to clinch the season-long Supra Showdown crown this weekend as they hold a 6-4 advantage over Team Toyota Top Fuel heading into this weekend with three races remaining. Alexis DeJoria will try to win the challenge for Team Funny Car as she battles Antron Brown on Friday, before Justin Ashley and J.R. Todd race on Saturday.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA West

Hingorani looks to take points lead… Sean Hingorani looks to close in on the ARCA West championship points lead this weekend at Shasta Speedway. Hingorani, a two-time winner this season, sits in second – just 14 points out of the lead heading into the race at Shasta this weekend.

Driver Quotes

“Going back to your home track is always a fun time and I am excited to see some family and hopefully grab a good run at Road America. I have not had the best luck there in the past but my No. 1 team has been putting together some really fast cars and I am excited to see what we can do this weekend, especially after coming off of a hot run in Pocono.” – Sam Mayer

“Road America is such a fun track to go to. It’s definitely a unique road course, but it’s always been one of my favorites. We’ve had a lot of speed on the road courses throughout this season and were close to getting the win back in Portland. If we can check all the boxes once again this weekend and keep all four wheels on the course, we should be right where we need to be at the end on Saturday with our BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet to fight for the win.” – Justin Allgaier

“We were really good at Road America last season and that showed with the result we had. We’ve put a lot of work in on these road courses and I’ve been in the sim this week so that I am ready for when we unload on Friday. Hopefully, we can have the same speed we have had the last few weeks and be in contention when it counts.” – Josh Berry’

“I ran pretty well here last year and I’ve spent some time in the sim preparing for Road America. We’re in Menards’ backyard this weekend, so it would be nice to have a good run for them and everyone at Pennington that will be there this weekend. I know Jason (Burdett, crew chief) and this team builds really good road course cars, so hopefully we can put it all together this weekend. ” – Brandon Jones

  • Road Course Racing: JR Motorsports will make its 200th start on traditional road courses this weekend in Road America. In 198 previous starts on road courses in the NXS, the organization has tallied five wins, 50 top fives and 105 top 10s.

Jr III Racing Continues to Expand IMSA WeatherTech Program

Chris Green | ChrisGreenPhoto.com

Mooresville, N.C. (26 July 2023) – With a deep roster of talented team members delivering well-executed race programs in a wide range of categories, Jr III (“Junior-Three”) Racing has continued to grow its competition programs. Having made its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut at Road America in 2021, the team will return to the beloved Wisconsin circuit with an expanded campaign in the IMSA WeatherTech ranks with a two-car program in 2023. Jr III Racing will debut the No. 29 Wing S2 Cyber Ligier PS J350 with drivers Bijoy Garg and Linus Lundqvist teaming up behind the wheel.

The move to WeatherTech marks another step up for young Jr III Racing driver Garg, who started with Jr III Racing in January of this season competing in the No. 3 Jr III Racing VP SportsCar Challenge entry. The Road America outing will mark his IMSA WeatherTech Championship debut. So far this season, Garg has qualified for pole position on all four event weekends and in his first sports car race, Garg scored a third place finish. At Sebring International Raceway Garg swept the weekend with back-to-back wins, then followed up with two second place finishes at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Most recently Garg drove to two additional back-to-back wins at Lime Rock Park.

“I’m excited to make the move to WeatherTech racing,” said Garg. “I feel pretty ready to be honest. I believe the time I had in both VP (Racing SportsCar Challenge) and Asian Le Mans Series really helped me prepare for the step up, but every field is different so you can’t really predict how it will go. I’m really looking forward to working with Linus and I think we will make a strong partnership.”

Lundqvist joins Jr III Racing following a convincing Indy NXT championship campaign in 2022, having scored eight wins, 20 podiums, and 10 pole awards in his two years in the category. Lundqvist has competed at Road America three times in the last two years scoring two fourth place finishes and a fifth place finish. Lundqvist has tested with multiple IndyCar teams, and is looking forward to making his first IMSA WeatherTech Championship start since 2019 when the Swede competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona in a Lamborghini Huracan GT3.

“I’m excited to be competing in an LMP3, this will be a new experience for me,” said Lundqvist. “I’ve tested in an LMP3, but haven’t raced in one yet so it will be exciting to see how it goes. I’m also excited to be back in IMSA. I competed in IMSA in 2019 at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona in GT3 cars. It will be fun to be back, especially in a different class and on a different circuit.”

Following the Road America outing, Jr III Racing will anticipate a return to IMSA action for the No. 29 Wing S2 Cyber Ligier at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September.

“We are beyond excited for the opportunity to run a second WeatherTech car,” said Billy Glavin, the owner of Jr III Racing. “We started out as a team running Prototype Challenge and have worked our way up to competing with two WeatherTech teams in just four seasons. The team has been working hard and we couldn’t have asked for a better team to do this with. I think Bijoy will do great in WeatherTech competition, he’s done really well in VP Challenge so I don’t see why this won’t be the same. This will be Linus’ first time with the team, but he has proved himself in an open wheel car and I believe he will do just the same in a P3.”

The IMSA SportsCar Weekend at Road America will take place August 4-6th with live coverage on USA Network starting at 11:00 am ET.

● Looking Back: Last weekend on the 2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle” at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, Preece qualified his No. 41 Ford Mustang 34th on Saturday but came out strong for Sunday’s race, finishing Stage 1 in 14th-place. He and the No. 41 team worked hard on pit strategy and, although his Ford Mustang was one the looser side, Preece was pretty happy with his racecar. But an incident on the final lap of the 160-lap race left him stuck on the racetrack and he was credited with a 31st-place result.

● ARCA Menards Series West Win: In June, competitors took on Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway for the season’s second road-course race. Preece kicked off the weekend on the West Coast with a victory in the ARCA Menards Series West race on Friday afternoon. He qualified his No. 9 Bonanza Ford on the pole. ● Movin’ On Up: The No. 41 SHR Ford Mustang team has showed streaks of improvement and consistency at various points this season. Preece had a career weekend at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway in April, earning his first Cup Series pole and leading a career-high 135 laps. In 21 points-paying events this season, Preece has six top-15 finishes – March 12 at Phoenix Raceway, April 16 at Marinsville (Va.) Speedway, May 14 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, May 29 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, June 11 at Sonoma and July 2 at the Chicago Street Course.

● Where He Stands: Preece heads to Richmond 27th in the driver standings with 341 points.

● Starting Things Off: Preece kicked off the 2023 season with a strong showing in the non-points Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, leading a race-high 43 laps but ultimately finishing seventh after a fuel pump issue. He has a best points-paying finish of 12th this season, which came at Phoenix Raceway in March.

Ryan Preece, Driver of the No. 41 United Rentals Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

Richmond is a place where you’ve had success in other series and that you seem confident at. Does this weekend feel like a good opportunity for you and the No. 41?

“Absolutely. Richmond is another one of the tracks that I have circled on my calendar. It’s a track that I enjoy and that fits my driving style really well. With my short-track background, it’s one that I feel confident heading to. My team and I have really been emphasizing on the last few races and this one as our best opportunity to win. It’s unfortunate that I’ve been taken out because of other people’s mistakes these last few weeks. But I’m ready to move on and get to Richmond. I always say that the clock resets at midnight and this week is no different. We’ve been working hard on our program and I anticipate a strong showing for us.”

From a driver perspective, what are the challenges of racing at Richmond?

“Richmond is a challenging racetrack when it comes to managing your tires throughout the run. Those first few laps on fresh tries are great because you’re fliyng through the field, but after those first 20 to 30 laps, the fall-off makes the car harder and harder to manage. So, it’s really about being smart and managing that so you can stay consistent throughout the run. I feel like I understand those challenges and hopefully we can really emphasize on that this weekend.”

Do you enjoy racing at Richmond?

“I do. I’m a short-track racer, so that’s a really big part of it. It definitely doesn’t drive like a lot of other short tracks but, if you can compare it, it’s more like Phoenix. We had our best finish of the season at Phoenix earlier this season, too, so that’s in the back of my head. The corners aren’t as tight at Richmond and the track is so unique. Our team needs to unload and be fast right away so we can qualify up front and stay there. Track position is always the name of the game and we’ve had to fight for track position these last few weeks because we didn’t qualify as well as we hoped. I’m hoping this weekend is different and we can be up front to start things off.”

KHI Enters CARS Tour Race at Hickory with Layne Riggs

Sponsors Puryear Tank Lines and Kevin Harvick Golf Carts Join the No. 62

Harrisburg, N.C. (July 26, 2023) – Layne Riggs will return to the seat of the No. 62 Ford for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) for the CARS Tour race at Hickory Motor Speedway, Saturday, July 29.

“I’m excited for this opportunity to run the No. 62 again with KHI,” Layne said. “We had a great showing a few weeks ago at Caraway Speedway, unfortunately, an issue post-race cost us the win. Our car was fast, and I know we’ll have another fast car this week and be in contention for the win. I’m grateful for our partner Puryear Tank Lines coming along with us this week and continuing to support my career. And to Kevin and DeLana (Harvick, co-owners of KHI) for the opportunity and for having Kevin Harvick Golf Carts along for the ride.”

Long time partners of both Scott and Layne Riggs, Puryear Tank Lines, will be showcased on the rear quarter panels for this weekend’s race. Based in Apex, N.C., Puryear Tank Lines is a family-owned and operated business specializing in bulk tank delivery of liquid asphalt, anhydrous ammonia, chemical tankers, dry bulk, and aggregates. With a commitment to Safety, Growth, Reliability and Customer Satisfaction, Puryear Tank Lines aims to treat their customers and employees like a member of their own family.

“Donnie Puryear has always been a huge supporter and fan of Layne,” said Scott Riggs. “We have been fortunate to have his continuous support for many years.”

The recently opened Kevin Harvick Golf Carts in Mooresville, N.C. will make its first appearance in motorsports and will be featured on the hood of the No. 62 for Saturday’s race at Hickory Motor Speedway.

Layne has 13 previous starts at the North Carolina short track where he has one pole, five top-five and nine top-10 finishes. His career-best finish at Hickory Motor Speedway is third on two different occasions (May 2017 and March 2022). Layne made his KHI debut at Caraway Speedway on June 28, 2023, and following a dominating win, a post-race inspection misstep took to the win away from the team.

The CARS Tour race at Hickory Motor Speedway is scheduled for Saturday, July 29, at 7 p.m. EDT. Coverage of the event will be streamed live on FloRacing.com.

Kaulig Racing Weekly Advance | Richmond Raceway & Road America

Sunday, July 30 at 3:00 p.m. EDT on USA

  • Kaulig Racing has made seven NCS starts at Richmond Raceway, earning a best finish of 17th.
  • So far in the 2023 NCS season, Kaulig Racing has earned two top fives, nine top-10 finishes and led 30 laps.

AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Action Industries Camaro ZL1

  • So far in the 2023 NCS season, Allmendinger has led seven laps and earned one top five, four top 10 and seven top-15 finishes.

“In the NextGen car, Richmond has probably been our worst racetrack and a place we still need to figure out. Our short track program has been getting better, and with what we are learning, we should go there and hopefully have a better race. Where that puts us at the end of the day, I’m not sure. Of the tracks left in the regular season, Richmond is definitely the one we have circled that we need to improve at. If we do that, I think that will give us confidence for the rest of them and have a shot to make the playoffs.” – AJ Allmendinger on Richmond Raceway

Justin Haley, No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1

  • Justin Haley has made five NCS starts at Richmond Raceway with a best finish of 21st.
  • So far in the 2023 NCS season, Haley has earned one top five and five top-10 finishes with a best qualifying effort of third.
  • Haley’s best finish of the season came from his runner-up finish in the first-ever race at the Chicago Street Course where he led 23 laps, the most he has led in a single race.
  • After completing the 2023 Coca-Cola 600 and Alsco Uniforms 300, Haley now holds the record for the most NASCAR National Series miles completed in a single day by any driver in NASCAR history.

“We struggled quite a bit the last time we raced at Richmond. We have been working hard as a team preparing for this race and improving our short-track program, and I think as long as we control everything we can control and execute like we have been lately, we will be in a good spot going into the race.” – Justin Haley on Richmond Raceway

Henry 180

“Road America has always been one of my favorite racetracks in any form of racing I have done there. It’s a really challenging racetrack with all the corners and different aspects of the track with high speed and low speed. It’ll be different now with the repave, so we’ll have to get an understanding of how that changes the set-up of the racecar. It’s a place that I have always enjoyed and I can’t wait to be back there again.” – AJ Allmendinger on Road America

Daniel Hemric, No. 11 Cirkul Chevrolet Camaro

  • Daniel Hemric has made five NXS starts at Road America, where he has earned two top-five finishes and led 20 laps.

“I am excited to get on track at Road America and experience the unknowns of the freshly paved track. Kaulig Racing has a great road course program and builds strong road course cars. My teammate AJ Allmendinger has done a great job of showcasing that over the past couple years and I think we are slowly but surely finding what works for me within the road course program. The race fans are hard to beat here, I look forward to putting on a good show for them.” – Daniel Hemric on Road America

Chandler Smith, No. 16 Quick Tie Products Chevrolet Camaro

Chandler Smith will make his first NXS start at Road America in the Henry 180.
Smith currently sits fifth in the 2023 NXS standings with one win, five top-five and eight top-10 finishes.

“Road America is a challenging track, not only for its length, but its elevation changes throughout. You’ve really got to get a good exit on the last corner, for example, because there’s a huge climb to the line that can punish you if you don’t have good momentum out of turn 14. The carousel is going to be an important corner to get right every single time, not just for the speed you need to carry through the kink down towards turn 12, but to keep it out of the grass on the outside. Our goal is to stay out of trouble and bring home a solid result.” – Chandler Smith on Road America
