Ford Performance – Nashville Superspeedway Advance

NASHVILLE SUPERSPEEDWAY NOTES

Friday, June 23 – NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, 8 p.m. ET (FS1)

Saturday, June 24 – NASCAR XFINITY Series, 3:30 p.m. ET (USA)

Sunday, June 25 – NASCAR Cup Series, 7 p.m. ET (NBC)

The second half of the NASCAR season kicks off Friday night at Nashville Superspeedway after all three national series had last week off from competition. This will mark the third straight year the track has hosted a tripleheader after the NASCAR Xfinity and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series conducted races at the facility from 2001-2011.

Harrison Burton: “I like Nashville. It’s a cool city and the fans are always excited. It’s been a fun racetrack for us with lots of lane choices. I remember Briscoe and us raced side-by-side for 30 laps in one stint last year and it was really frustrating back then, but looking back on it that’s normally the sign of a good track where you can race side-by-side and battle each other and have some fun. I feel like those kinds of races, where you can fan out, put on good shows for the Next Gen car and I expect that to be the same this coming week.”

Austin Cindric: “It’s an interesting place. It’s an intermediate that drives like a short track or a short track that drives like an intermediate. It probably depends on how your car is handling, but it’s a pretty involved racetrack with a lot of shifting and different lanes. It should be a night race again this year, so I’m looking forward to that. Obviously, I don’t think there are too many better locations for a NASCAR race to be, so I think it definitely deserves a race on the schedule. I’m looking forward to going back.”

Ryan Preece: “Nashville races similar to a short track, but it’s also a mile-and-a-half so it’s kind of got that little bit of an in-between. I’ve only been there twice and we won those truck races both times, so it’s a place I’ve enjoyed going to.”

Chris Buescher: “Nashville is a night race, which is cool. It’s also a concrete race, which has been good to us this last little bit because Dover and Bristol were pretty strong. Nashville was a pretty decent time for us last year, so I have high hopes heading into it. I’m excited for it and love the fact that they’re doing a night race. That’s really cool.”

NASHVILLE TOP 10

This will mark the third straight year NASCAR has run a Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway and while Ford is still looking for its first victory, there have been five different drivers who have finished in the Top 10. Kevin Harvick (5th/10th) and Joey Logano (10th/9th) have done it twice while Aric Almirola (4th in 2021), Ryan Blaney (3rd in 2022) and Austin Cindric (7th in 2022) round out the list.

BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK?

Ford will be going for its third straight win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series after Cole Custer won at Portland International Raceway and Aric Almirola took the checkered flag at Sonoma Raceway. Riley Herbst sat on the pole for this event last year and has career finishes of 10th and third while Ryan Sieg has finished 16th and ninth during that same period. Cole Custer will be making his series debut at Nashville Superspeedway after running the past two years in the NASCAR Cup Series.

FORD WINS NASCAR DEBUT AT NASHVILLE SUPERSPEEDWAY

The first race held at Nashville Superspeedway for one of NASCAR’s top three touring series came on April 14, 2001 when Ford’s Greg Biffle won the Pepsi 300 in what was then known as the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series, now NASCAR XFINITY Series. Ford dominated the race up front as Biffle, Jason Keller and Jeff Green combined to lead 200-of-225 laps. Biffle, who was out front for a race-high 133 circuits, beat Keller to the checkered flag by just over a half-second as Ford finished first and second.

A NASHVILLE THREE-PREECE?

Nobody has enjoyed Nashville Superspeedway more the last two years than Ryan Preece, who owns back-to-back NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victories at the 1.333 mile track. Even though he won’t be in a truck this weekend, Preece will be in the NASCAR Cup Series race as he looks to win at NSS for a third year in a row. Preece, who won the ARCA Menards West Series race at Sonoma Raceway two weeks ago, had brake issues and finished 32nd in his only other Cup start in 2021.

THORSPORT AT NASHVILLE

ThorSport Racing, which has wins this season from Joey Logano (Bristol Dirt) and Ben Rhodes (Charlotte), is still looking for its first win at Nashville Superspeedway. Matt Crafton has the most experience of the group with 15 starts and nine Top-10 finishes at the track. Ty Majeski (8th/4th) has a pair of Top-10 runs to his credit while Rhodes has seventh and 12th-place efforts in his two starts. Hailie Deegan will be making her first start at the track with ThorSport after finishes of 21st and 28th the past two seasons.

Newly launched The BIG 615 station featured on the No. 45 Toyota Camry TRD

Mooresville, N.C. (Jun. 20, 2023) – 23XI Racing announced today that The BIG 615, a newly launched station on TuneIn, the world’s leading live audio service, will serve as the co-primary sponsor alongside current 23XI partner MoneyLion on Tyler Reddick’s No. 45 Toyota Camry TRD for the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway.

TuneIn and Garth Brooks recently announced the launch of the SEVENS Radio Network, exclusively on TuneIn. The stations featured on the network are conceived and directed by Brooks, one of the world’s best-selling music artists. The first station to launch is The BIG 615. As the NASCAR Cup Series returns to the home of country music for the third year, Nashville provides the ideal place for The BIG 615 to be highlighted on the No. 45 car, with 615 being the area code for Music City.

“It’s easy to see why NASCAR is such a fan-driven sport,” said Garth Brooks. “Hell, we just have our logo on the car and I feel like I’m driving the car myself! This is exciting!”

“What a cool opportunity and great place for the 23XI team to partner with Garth Brooks, TuneIn, and MoneyLion,” said Reddick. “Racing back in Nashville has been great for our sport and fans, and I can’t think of a more iconic artist to feature on the No. 45 car. It’s a real honor for me and I hope we can put on a good show for Garth and all the fans.”

MoneyLion, a leader in financial technology powering the next generation of personalized products and content, will also be featured on Reddick’s car in Nashville. Since partnering with 23XI last year, MoneyLion has given race fans access to industry-leading products, guidance and offers that enable them to take control of their money. For this race, MoneyLion rewarded one lucky fan and a guest with the ultimate Nashville race weekend including flights, hotels, VIP Access and more. Additionally, in partnership with TuneIn, many more fans won free subscriptions to TuneIn Premium.

“The connection between NASCAR and country music is a natural one, and we’re thrilled to partner with Garth and TuneIn to help highlight the launch of the BIG 615,” said Steve Lauletta, 23XI team president. “Our team is always looking for ways to be unique while also helping brands reach new audiences, and this partnership is sure to drive awareness of TuneIn and the new channel to the millions of NASCAR fans.”

With a win at Kansas Speedway in May of 2022, Busch earned 23XI the team’s first-ever playoff berth. Follow Carson Hocevar: Twitter: @CarsonHocevar | Instagram: @CarsonHocevar | Facebook: /carsonhocevarracing | Web: www.CarsonHocevar.com

Gateway Recap: After a lap one incident two weeks ago in Gateway, Carson Hocevar rebounded for a fourth-place finish. The Michigan-born driver spent most of the early portion of the race repairing damage from the incident. But, he was able to secure stage points in the first stage. In the end, Hocevar’s fourth-place finish marked his fourth top-five finish in a row and advanced him to seventh in the driver’s points standings.

Feeling Like a Rockstar: Hocevar enters this weekend at Nashville as the only driver to finish inside the top-five, or top-10, in each of the last four races. Since his 31st-place finish in Kansas, Hocevar has climbed from 16th to 7th in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings.

Hocevar on Last Race at World Wide Technology Raceway: “It feels so good to be running as good as we are after a shaky start to the year. This truck was beat up after the Lap One incident. So, to be able to leave Gateway with a top-five just shows how hard Phil Gould and our Worldwide Express team works to build fast trucks.”

Hocevar at Nashville Superspeedway: In two starts at Nashville Superspeedway, Hocevar has finished 16th and third, with his best finish coming a year ago. Additionally, Hocevar has qualified 11th and 3rd in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Hocevar on Friday’s Race at Nashville Superspeedway: “Nashville is a fun track and we had a really quick truck last year. It came down to me, [Ryan] Preece, and Zane [Smith] battling for the win at the end we finished third. We’re coming into Nashville carrying a lot of momentum from the last few races and I’m hoping our speed carries into this weekend.”

On the Truck: Hocevar’s No. 42 Worldwide Express Chevrolet Silverado will race with support from the WWEX group of brands, which comprises Worldwide Express, Unishippers and GlobalTranz, and offers full-service logistics expertise to more than 115,000 customers across the country.

Overall, we had a really fast Unishippers Silverado and I’m super appreciative of opportunities like this.”

Justin Marks Added to Kaulig Racing’s Xfinity Series Lineup

LEXINGTON, N.C. (June 20, 2023) – Kaulig Racing announced today that Trackhouse Racing founder and owner Justin Marks will drive the No. 10 Jockey Chevrolet in the July 1 NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) race on the Chicago Street Course.

The quality of Kaulig Racing’s Chevrolets, along with the inaugural street race made for an easy decision for both Kaulig Racing and Marks to team up for this historic event. Marks will step away from his NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) owner duties to join forces with Kaulig Racing’s powerhouse road-course racing program and race in the NXS for the first time since 2018.

“It’s very difficult to retire as a racecar driver,” said the 41-year-old Marks. “I’ve got a lot of experience on street courses, so when NASCAR announced it was going to Chicago, I just felt like I really had to be a part of that experience. We have a great relationship with Kaulig Racing through our pit crew department and being a fellow Chevrolet team, so making my return to racing with the team just felt right. Jockey coming on board makes it even more enticing to run well in Chicago.”

Marks owns 35-career NXS starts including a victory at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2016, along with three top five and seven top-10 finishes. Each start has come on road courses.

Marks, whose Trackhouse Racing team fields Cup Series entries for drivers Daniel Suárez and Ross Chastain, boasts an extensive sports-car racing resumé, earning multiple wins across the Rolex Grand-Am Sports Car Series and the Weathertech Sportscar Championship Series. Most recently, he won the Trans-Am race at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut on May 29.

He is with the right organization to return to victory lane in Chicago.

Of Kaulig Racing’s 22-total Xfinity wins, nine have come at road courses. The team also earned its first win in the NCS with its victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in 2021 with AJ Allmendinger.

“If you’re in a road-course car in the Xfinity Series, AJ [Allmendinger] demonstrates pretty consistently, that the Kaulig Racing cars are the ones you want to be sitting in,” said Marks. “It’s going to be a very unique event, and I know we will have a good racecar.”

Kaulig Racing’s No. 10 Chevrolet, which features an all-star roster, has earned two wins so far in the 2023 Xfinity season. The three-car NXS team has earned three-total wins in 2023, along with nine top fives, 22 top-10 finishes and 319 laps led.

“We’re excited to have Justin [Marks], another road-course ringer, come out of retirement and compete for us in the Xfinity Series,” said Chris Rice, president of Kaulig Racing. “I think that says a lot about the tremendous success Kaulig Racing has had in just a few short years, especially on road courses. Not only is Justin Marks a successful team owner in NASCAR, but he has a ton of experience on street courses, so having him come on board for this historic weekend in our industry just makes sense.”

The No. 10 Chevrolet will carry Jockey’s red, white and blue paint scheme in Chicago, a partnership that began last year with Trackhouse, the first such team sponsorship in the 147-year history of the apparel brand. At the core of the partnership was the launch of the brand’s Made in America* Collection – proudly grown and crafted right here in the USA. Designed with high quality American-grown cotton, these durable staples help to support the communities Americans call home.

NASCAR will officially kick off its first-ever event weekend at the Chicago Street Course beginning with the Loop 121 Xfinity race on July 1 at 5 p.m. EST. The USA Network will televise the race at 5 p.m. EDT.

*Socks and the Everyday Tee in the Jockey Made in America Collection are made in USA with imported material.

Established in 2016, Kaulig Racing™ has made the NXS Playoffs consecutively each season since the playoff system started and has won back-to-back regular-season championships. Before becoming a full-time NCS team, Kaulig Racing made multiple starts in the 2021 NCS season and won in its seventh-ever start with AJ Allmendinger’s victory at “The Brickyard” for the Verizon 200 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The team expanded to a two-car, full-time NCS team in 2022 with Justin Haley piloting the No. 31 Camaro ZL1, and an all-star lineup featured in the No. 16 Camaro ZL1. Haley will continue to drive the No. 31 full-time in 2023, alongside AJ Allmendinger, who will drive the No. 16 Camaro ZL1. The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 GTP Team Heads to Watkins Glen International to Tackle the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen

(Watkins Glen, NY.) June 20, 2023 – After a long break in the schedule, the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 and Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport (WTRAndretti) returns in action this weekend at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. The six-hour endurance event at Watkins Glen International is the third race out of four in the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup Championship. The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 returns to the classic, 3.4-mile road course as defending winners and have their sights set on returning to victory lane.

As Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque handle the full season co-driving duties, the pair will be joined by IMSA Michelin Endurance Championship driver teammate, Louis Deletraz, to complete the WTRAndretti lineup. In the last three events at Watkins Glen, the blue and black stable has started on the front row, featuring two pole positions in 2021, as well as finishing on the podium – including last year’s win. Marking just near the halfway point in the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen proves to be a pivotal race not just on the schedule, but in championship points.

“Watkins Glen was a turning point in our season last year and we are looking for a similar momentum shift this year when we head there,” said Ricky Taylor, full time co-driver of the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06. “Acura has given us an amazing car to fight for GTP victories, and we are prepared and ready to clinch a victory this weekend.”

“For me, Watkins Glen always marks the halfway point of the championship,” said Filipe Albuquerque, full time co-driver of the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06. “We will have Louis and happy to have him back. We’ve been happy at Watkins Glen in the past – we won last year, with an epic ending. We need to learn about everybody, and which manufacturers can do better on such a smooth track now. There is no reason why for us to not go for the win. We’ll keep pushing and get that win that’s been eluding us.”

“I’m really excited to be going to Watkins Glen with WTRAndretti,” said Louis Deletraz, endurance co-driver for the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06. “I haven’t been racing in the Acura ARX-06 since Sebring three months ago so it’s good to be back. Watkins Glen is an important event for us. We have shown that we are fast and are always in contention to win races and we intend to keep doing that. On the driving side, Watkins Glen is a very high-speed track with no runoff areas, mistakes are always punished and that’s a challenge for all drivers but also why we love it. In testing there, the car felt great and we are ready to fight on track.”

“Watkins Glen is a big race and is one of the longest running sportscar races in America,” said Wayne Taylor. “From a team standpoint, it’s one race that we’ve only won once. This year has been tough, but we’ve been competitive at every race, but we’ve had incidents. Now we need to start concentrating on finishing races, certainly in the top three, to start gaining points in this championship. Obviously, we’re third – 60 points behind – but things can change so quickly. Everybody is going into this race with the attitude of ‘Okay, guys, we need to have a good race here, good strategy and we need to get a good result.’ Daytona was really our only good result this year. The other two races should have been good results, but we crashed out right at the end of both races and then Laguna Seca, we finished fourth which was disappointing considering we had won two in a row before. We had a good test at Watkins Glen and so we are looking forward to this weekend. Although, I’ve been checking the weather and its rain. Rain is always an equalizer so will see what happens, but really looking forward to this race.”

MLT Motorsports to Race in Six Hours of the Glen

Braselton, GA (June 20, 2023) – Today, MLT Motorsports announced their entry into the 2023 Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen race to be held Sunday, June 25, at Watkins Glen International. The team will field the No. 54 Belle Haven Investments/Aufgang Architecture/AdeptID/OwnBackup LMP3 Ligier JS-320 entry with drivers Jason Rabe, Andrew “Pinky” Pinkerton, and Stevan McAleer. This marks the first IMSA WeatherTech race for the team in 2023, in addition to their full-time entry in IMSA’s VP Racing SportsCar Challenge series in an LMP3.

“First, I need to give a huge thanks to all of the partners for believing in me and making this dream come true,” said Rabe. “Belle Haven Investments, Notlad Racing, AdeptID, OwnBackup, Aufgang Architecture, and of course, MLT Motorsports.

“Making my IMSA WeatherTech debut at Watkins Glen is very special because it’s a home event at one of my favorite tracks. I used to camp in the infield in my car for a lot of the IMSA and IndyCar races wishing to be on the other side of the fence. Now here I am about to race in the six-hour endurance classic, which is extra special since it’s the last year of LMP3 in WeatherTech. It’s a big class field, and I get to race with my friends!”

Rabe will be joined by Pinkerton, an MLT Motorsports engineer, and strategist usually found on the pit box. This week he takes on driving duties to help improve the team’s 2022 result at The Glen.

“First off, I am extremely grateful to Dr. Mike and the whole of the MLT team for trusting me with this responsibility.” Pinkerton continued, “This will be my first WeatherTech race behind the wheel after calling strategy and engineering the LMP3 program for the past year with the team. Our car has pace, and we were well-positioned strategy-wise during last year’s race. After a strong test last month and doing our homework in the shop, I am excited to show what we can do as a team. On the driving side, I can’t wait to share the car with Jason and Stevan around the extremely quick Watkins circuit. Physically it is a very demanding track as you are constantly under load in high-speed corners and really have to trust the Ligier’s aero-platform.”

Rounding out the trio of drivers is veteran McAleer who will also be competing in the Michelin Pilot Challenge series that weekend. A previous winner at The Glen, McAleer is no stranger to the 2.45-mile historic road course.

“I’m very excited to find myself back in WeatherTech for the 6 Hours of the Glen,” said McAleer. “I tested with MLT last month in their Ligier LMP3 car and was thoroughly impressed with their program, staff, and car performance. I am good friends with Jason Rabe, so this is how the discussions began, and we have always talked about being teammates one day, so this will be a memorable moment.”

Having logged the most laps at the track, McAleer has high expectations for the race, saying, “Pinky was plenty fast at the test, so I have high expectations for the team and result.” He continued, “This will be the first Weathertech race for Pinky and Jason, so traffic management will be key, and as always with endurance racing, the pit stops have to be executed quickly with no penalties. I do fully believe we will be in the running to fight for the win.”

Rabe added, “Having Stevan and Andrew as my co-drivers is pretty cool, and that’s a big part of why this event means even more to me. They are both incredibly talented, and we’ve all known each other for a while now. We coach and race in many of the same paddocks, motor clubs, and school programs. We are looking forward to going after a trophy in our MLT Motorsports LMP3 Ligier JS-320!”

Fans can watch all the action live at 10:30 AM ET, with the first half of the race broadcast on Peacock. Coverage switches to USA Network at 2:00 PM ET and runs until the finish at 5:00 PM ET. IMSA TV will also have live flag-to-flag coverage from 10:35 AM – 4:40 PM ET. Be sure to follow MLT Motorsports on Instagram @mltmotorsports for live team updates.

About MLT Motorsports:

Founded in 2018 by Dr. Mike Thompson, MLT Motorsports has established itself as a premier team amongst the IMSA paddock in the LMP3 category. Based near Road Atlanta, the team has easy access to some of the best road courses in the country and, importantly, Florida, where the sportscar racing world kicks off every winter at Daytona and Sebring. Constant investment and maintenance have seen the team arrive at each race weekend with top-notch race cars and state-of-the-art equipment.

Early success can be attributed to the hard work and experience the team possesses, as the first win came on their second start at Mid-Ohio in 2019. During the 2021 season, MLT finished off the podium only once on the way to a double championship win, earning the IMSA Prototype Challenge Team’s and Driver’s Championship with drivers Dakota Dickerson and Josh Sarchet. Parlaying the success of the 2021 Championship, MLT made its IMSA WeatherTech Championship debut at Mid-Ohio in May of 2022, joining the ranks of the best sportscar teams in the world.

Notes of Interest

● Kevin Harvick will be peach perfect this weekend in Music City. The 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion will drive the No. 4 Busch Light Peach Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing in Sunday’s Ally 400 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway. Busch Light Peach is a crisp, refreshing, peach-flavored lager with a touch of sweet on the front end and a clear, beer finish on the back end. It is available for a limited time only in 12-, 24- and 30-packs nationwide.

● Harvick comes into Nashville riding a wave of consistency with five straight finishes of 11th or better, a run highlighted by a second-place drive May 14 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

● Consistency has been a hallmark of Harvick’s career, and Nashville is yet another example of how he is a top-10 stalwart. In his two NASCAR Cup Series starts at the track, Harvick has finished fifth and 10th, respectively, to earn an average finish of 7.5. The result is emblematic of Harvick’s overall record at tracks that are between a mile and 1.49 miles in length, as he has an average finish of 11.9 in a career that dates back to his Cup Series debut on Feb. 26, 2001 at the 1.017-mile North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham where Harvick finished a respectable 14th.

● Prior to the inaugural Ally 400 at Nashville in 2021, 10 years had passed since NASCAR last competed at the 1.333-mile, concrete oval. It was a NASCAR Xfinity Series race on July 23, 2011 and it was won by Carl Edwards. The NASCAR Cup Series had never competed at the track until the 2021 Ally 400, but Cup teams tested there extensively back in the day when it was fashionable to race on Sunday, test somewhere on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then fly to the next Cup race on Thursday. Harvick, now in his 23rd year of Cup Series competition, has logged more laps in a Cup car at Nashville than any of his Cup Series brethren despite the track never hosting a Cup race until 2021.

● In addition to testing a lot at Nashville, Harvick also raced extensively at the track, performing incredibly well. In four career Xfinity Series starts, Harvick has two wins – April 15, 2006 and April 3, 2010. He finished third on June 10, 2006 and recorded his worst finish, seventh, in his first Xfinity Series race at Nashville on April 14, 2001. It all gave Harvick an average finish of third. He also had a lap completion rate of 100 percent, running all 900 laps available to him, and he led 123 of those laps.

● Harvick’s lone NASCAR Truck Series start at Nashville came on April 2, 2010 when he finished second to Kyle Busch.

● In all of Harvick’s starts at Nashville – a total of seven – he has never finished outside the top-10. In fact, all but two of those finishes have been in the top-five. He finished seventh in his first Xfinity Series start at the track on April 14, 2001 and 10th in last year’s NASCAR Cup Series race. To break it down even further, Harvick has three top-twos, four top-threes and five top-fives, the most recent of which came in the inaugural Ally 400 when he finished fifth.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Busch Light Peach Ford Mustang

Last year when you competed at Nashville, you said after the race that you had found some things regarding your car’s setup that proved to be a turning point in your season, and it seemed to lay the groundwork for better performances that ultimately showed up via wins at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn and Richmond (Va.) Raceway. What was it that you learned?

“For us, it was really just a turning point in thought processes and (chassis) setups and kind of validating the things that we knew we could do with the car, but it just took different approaches to make the car do those types of things. From that point on in the season, we were really able to be competitive. It just took a little bit to get everything going, but it was definitely the turning point in the season, for sure.”

Those back-to-back victories last year ended a winless drought. Did you feel that those wins were coming, especially after what you learned at Nashville?

“We really thought after we went to Nashville that we had kind of righted the ship. The beginning of the year was rough – just a lot of concepts and things that didn’t really pay off or work out. But when we went to Nashville, we had a practice session, we tried some things, and we ran really well in the race. That’s really when our season took a turn in the right direction, and we had a lot more confidence in the things that we were doing. So as we went week to week, we kept getting a little bit better because our concepts and things were really in the direction that we needed to be headed. We felt like we gave a couple away before we won the first couple of races, and I think as we got to the end of the year, we had some terrible luck and got knocked out of the playoffs, but it felt like we were in contention to win a few of the races over the last 10. On days when you had the opportunity to win, you needed to take advantage of them.”

Prior to the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville in 2021, you last competed there in 2010 during a NASCAR Xfinity Series race. What were your expectations when you rolled back into the track after an 11-year absence?

“I didn’t ever go to Nashville without the expectation of winning. It was one of our best racetracks throughout the years and we’ve always had good success there and always enjoyed the racetrack itself. I’m glad we’re back there in Cup. That facility was built to have a Cup date. I’m excited to be there because we have just a ton of fans.”

In addition to Xfinity Series racing at Nashville, that venue was the go-to track back when you had unlimited testing. Outside of the Xfinity Series, how many testing miles do you think you have at Nashville?

“Not many in the last little bit, but there was a period of time that we spent a lot of time at Nashville. We developed a lot of the coil binding in the front and rear springs there and at Milwaukee. When Nashville was built, I actually was part of the very first tire test – the first time that anybody was on the racetrack. Obviously, I’ve had a little bit of a layoff there, but from the very first moment I’ve been a part of that racetrack.”

Talk about those days of unlimited testing, where after a three-day race weekend you’d go test for two or three days somewhere, oftentimes at Nashville.

“Really, we can go back to 2000. I did all the testing for Dale Earnhardt as we went through the year. So, we would go race and then we would go to a racetrack, whatever racetrack that would be, and I also did my own testing. We probably did four or five tests – I think at that point they could only do seven tests in the Cup Series – and then I had all my tests that you could do in the Xfinity Series. But you could also go to any racetrack that wasn’t on the schedule, and at that particular point, Kentucky wasn’t on the schedule, so we spent a lot of time at Kentucky developing stuff for Dale and the Cup program. But for the most part, we did, midweek, probably 20-25 tests a year as we went through the season, and most of them would be two-day tests. And that’s what you did. You were never home. You tested all the time. When you had a problem, you just went somewhere and tested. Whether it be Greenville-Pickens or Caraway or VIR, Milwaukee, it didn’t matter, you could go to any racetrack if it wasn’t on the schedule. Through the years they just changed that because we would spend so much time at the racetrack. We would test on different brands of tires and different series of cars, and we would do whatever it took. But, for the most part, you probably spent 20-25 two-day tests away from what you did on those three-day weekends.”

When you returned to Nashville in 2021, was the track still the same as you remembered it, or had it changed some?

“The track really hadn’t changed. I think a couple of the bumps were a little bit worse than probably what they were before, but nothing drastic. I think the stuff they sprayed on the racetrack added a little bit of grip to the higher lanes in practice, and then for the race it was really back down to the bottom and more traditional like it had been before.”

You were one of the handful of drivers who had prior experience at Nashville. Did that help when you returned to the track, or had the march of time and technology made it an even playing field for everyone?

“I’d spent a fair amount of time there, so just having that general picture in your mind of how it raced and the things that you did and how it went was definitely good to have, and it kind of took away some of the questions you might have at a place you hadn’t been to ever before.”

Nashville is concrete, but does it race like its fellow concrete tracks – Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway?

“Bristol and Dover are fairly similar as far as the way you drive them, and the feel and the speed. Nashville, it is concrete and it does take things differently, but it’s much flatter, and has a much different pace to the car compared to those two places with all the banking in the corners. Nashville is a very unique track because it’s flat with wide corners, and with the rubber building up on the track and the resin going down, it kind of evolves as the weekend goes.”

RFK Historically at Nashville
Cup Wins: —

  • Roush Responsible for Marquee Wins at Nashville: NASCAR’s initial tenure at Nashville lasted around a decade, and Jack Roush not only opened but closed out the run the Xfinity Series had there with victories. In the very first NXS race back in 2001, Greg Biffle led 133 of the 225 laps to capture one of his five series wins that season. Carl Edwards, responsible for five NXS wins at Nashville Superspeedway, won the very last NASCAR Xfinity race there, leading 124 of the 225 laps in July of 2011.
  • Cousin Carl Dominates in Music City: Edwards dominated in his 13 starts at Nashville, finishing top-10 in all but once race, and top five in all but two. He averaged a finish of 3.5 with five overall wins, including three-straight from 2006-07, and the final two in 2011. Driving the No. 60 entry in all 13 events, Edwards led a combined 247 laps in the first three wins, then went on to lead a combined 272 laps in the 2011 races, which stands as the last time NASCAR visited the facility.
  • Tale of the Tape: Overall at Nashville SS, 15 different drivers have driven for Jack Roush at the 1.33-mile track. RFK has 28 top-10s in 50 starts, 17 of which were inside the top five.
