Diverse field of Craftsman Truck Series Regulars and Cup Moonlighters seeking victory at Weather Guard Truck Race on Dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway

Ben Rhodes (99) won the WEATHER GUARD Truck Race on Dirt last year and finished second in the 2021 Truck Race on Dirt at BMS. He enters the race as the pre-race favorite.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 5, 2023) – The field for the WEATHER GUARD Truck Race on Dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway is absolutely stacked with talented drivers, highlighted by a tough contingent of series regulars and a opportunist group of Cup Series moonlighters.

When the green flag drops at 7 p.m. on Saturday night for the 75-mile race (40/90/150 laps) on the clay-covered high banks of The World’s Fastest Half-Mile, every driver in the field will be chasing the signature BMS Trophy and elusive BMS Gladiator Sword.

Defending winner Ben Rhodes leads the long list of favorites, having won at BMS last year in dramatic fashion in his No. 99 ThorSport Racing machine and grabbing a second-place finish at this race in 2021. The Kentucky driver has said (gasp!) that he actually prefers dirt-covered Bristol to concrete Bristol.
“I really enjoy it,” Rhodes has said. “I might be the only one that thinks this, but I enjoy the dirt in Bristol more than the concrete actually.”

Another Truck regular who comes into the event riding a wave of momentum is Carson Hocevar. He earned his first career victory last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway and is eager to get his No. 42 Niece Motorsports Chevy back on the Bristol dirt after finishing a disappointing second to Rhodes last year.

“I wouldn’t say that we lost the race last year, we ran really well,” Hocevar said recently. “We were just eventually beat by the better truck. Ben had the fastest truck all day and he nearly let one get away from him. We were in position to take advantage, but he was able to get back out in front and get by us at the end. It was disappointing, but I feel like we are ready to give it another shot this year. It was a lot of fun.”

In fact, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is so deep with a strong group of experienced regulars that you almost expect great performances from them all, including defending series champ Zane Smith, Christian Eckes, who won at Atlanta last month and finished fifth on Bristol dirt last year, Hailie Deegan, veteran Matt Crafton, Bristol UNOH 200 winner Ty Majeski, Matt DiBenedetto, Stewart Friesen, Grant Enfinger, Parker Kligerman, who his driving the No. 75 Chevy for Abingdon, Va.-based Henderson Motorsports.

There’s also a young group of Truck Series stars on the rise and will certainly factor into the Bristol equation, including Nick Sanchez, who led a ton of laps last weekend in Texas, Chase Purdy, Corey Heim, Rajah Caruth, Daniel Dye and Bret Holmes.

Meanwhile, the list of Cup stars who will be trying to do what Martin Truex Jr. did in 2021 by stealing a victory in a rare Truck Series appearance, includes defending Cup champ Joey Logano, who won the Cup race on dirt in ’21, and will be driving the No. 66 for ThorSport. Dirt-lover Chase Briscoe will be piloting the No. 22 truck, William Byron will be at the controls of the No. 51 Chevy for Kyle Busch Motorsports and dirt Late Model star Jonathan Davenport – who is entered in the Cup race in the No. 13 for Kaulig Racing – will drive the No. 7 Chevy for Spire Motorsports.

A few other drivers to keep an eye on include California-based dirt specialist Tanner Carrick, who is going to drive the No. 30 machine for On Point Motorsports. Talented Midwest dirt racer Tyler Carpenter will drive the No. 41 for Niece Motorsports and dirt Late Model racer Andrew Gordon will once again pilot the No. 47 for G2G Racing.

The Craftsman Truck Series stars will hit the track for the first time on Friday during Bush’s Beans Practice Day. They will have two sessions, at 5:35 p.m. and 8:02 p.m.

On Saturday the Craftsman Trucks will participate in Bush’s Beans Qualifying. There will be four 15-lap heat races to determine the starting lineup for Saturday night’s WEATHER GUARD Truck Race on Dirt (8 p.m., FS1, MRN Radio). The heat race fields will be determined by random draw.

The race weekend will finish on Sunday night as the NASCAR Cup Series returns to its roots with the Food City Dirt Race (7 p.m., FOX, PRN Radio). The Cup Series teams will participate in Friday’s Bush’s Beans Practice Day and Saturday’s Bush’s Beans Qualifying.

In addition to cheering on their favorite drivers during the weekend and enjoying the Easter Celebration, Bristol Motor Speedway fans will definitely want to take advantage of so many activities to make a complete weekend of family fun. There will be great video entertainment provided by Colossus TV, the world’s largest center-hung video screen, premium VIP experiences like the Super Fan Suites, tailgating, a visit to the BMS Kids Zone, BMS Fan Zone and Fan Midway, on-site camping, concerts and other entertainment at the Food City Fan Zone Stage like the Race Day Revival with Kenny Wallace and John Roberts, great food and beverages in the concession stands throughout the property, and so much more.

To purchase tickets for the Food City Dirt Race, WEATHER GUARD® Truck Race on Dirt and Bush’s Beans Qualifying, please visit the BMS website, or call the BMS Ticket Sales Center at (866) 415-4158.

SHORT-TRACK SWING CONTINUES AT BRISTOL

The NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) will head back to its roots this weekend as the two series are set to make their only appearance on dirt this season. For the third consecutive year, the iconic half-mile of Bristol Motor Speedway has been transformed into a dirt track to host two of NASCAR’s top series under the lights for the second stop of the three-race short-track swing.

While Chevrolet is the winningest manufacturer at Bristol with 46 NCS wins on the traditional concrete surface, the manufacturer is heading to “The Last Great Colosseum” hungry for its first win on the Bristol dirt in both series.

As NASCAR continues to celebrate its 75th anniversary, Sunday’s Food City Dirt Race will mark the 491st all-time dirt race for NASCAR’s premier series. A handful of Chevrolet drivers come from an extensive dirt racing background featuring two-time Chili Bowl Nationals winner Kyle Larson, 2013 NCTS Eldora Speedway winner Austin Dillon, and notable dirt track racer and World of Outlaws sprint car team owner Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

After coming up just one spot short of the victory last year, Chevrolet’s NCTS drivers will have their chance to sling dirt in Saturday’s Weather Guard Truck Race on Dirt. The series’ most recent winner Carson Hocevar led the charge for the Bowtie brigade in the 2022 event, collecting a runner-up finish in his No. 42 Niece Motorsports Silverado RST. Joining the series’ regulars this weekend will be Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) alum William Byron who will make his first of three NCTS starts of the season behind the wheel of the No. 51 Silverado RST. Byron’s first and only full-time season in the series was with KBM in 2016. The North Carolina native powered KBM to a series-leading seven victories that season, including the victory in the season-finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway that ultimately delivered the team the owner’s championship.

CHEVROLET DRIVES TO SECOND WEEKEND SWEEP OF 2023

While NASCAR’s three top series split states in last weekend’s competition, one thing remained the same – a Chevrolet-powered machine taking the checkered flag. Chevrolet drivers Kyle Larson, Chandler Smith and Carson Hocevar took the victories in their respective series marking the second time this season the Bowtie brand swept the wins across all three series.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson nabbed his first win of the 2023 season at Richmond Raceway. Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1 team executed a fast stop on the race’s final round of pit stops to put Larson out front for the last stretch to the finish. The 30-year-old California native led 93 laps, including the last 25, to take his 20th career win in NASCAR’s premier series.

Returning to the driving duties of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1 for injured Chase Elliott, Josh Berry took the checkered flag in the runner-up position – Berry’s career-best finish in just his sixth start in the series. Ross Chastain brought his No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Camaro ZL1 home in third to give Chevrolet a sweep of the top three finishing positions – the third time this season that the manufacturer has accomplished a podium sweep.

Chevrolet remains in control with Larson delivering the manufacturer its fifth win in seven NCS races this season. The 2021 NCS Champion is the fourth different Chevrolet driver to add a win and a playoff berth to his name this season, joining Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (JTG Daugherty Racing), Kyle Busch (Richard Childress Racing) and William Byron (Hendrick Motorsports) on that elite list. Chevrolet also remains in the top position in both the series’ driver and manufacturer points standings. With his series-leading sixth top-10 finish of the season, Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman continues to pace the NCS driver standings by four markers over fellow Team Chevy driver Ross Chastain.

In just his 10th career start in the series, Chandler Smith took his first NASCAR Xfinity Series win at Richmond Raceway. The NXS rookie proved to be a contender all race long, driving his No. 16 Kaulig Racing Camaro SS to the Stage One win and going on to lead a race-high 83 laps en route to the victory. The 20-year-old Georgia native gave Chevrolet its fifth NXS win of the season with the Bowtie brand continuing to lead in the series’ manufacturer standings for the seventh consecutive week. With his sixth top-10 finish of the season, Austin Hill continues to lead in the driver standings by 12 points over second.

Carson Hocevar was able to notch his first career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win after taking the checkered flag in dramatic fashion at Texas Motor Speedway. After a handful of late-race cautions, the field was faced with a pair of overtime finishes. The 20-year-old Georgia native took the white flag behind fellow Team Chevy driver Nick Sanchez and the reigning series’ champion Zane Smith. With the top two drivers making contact, Hocevar was able to power his No. 42 Niece Motorsports Silverado RST to the front, leading only the last lap to take the triumph. The victory is Chevrolet’s series-leading third win of the season with Hocevar joining Christian Eckes as the second Chevrolet driver to claim a playoff berth in the series. The Bowtie brand continues to lead in the series’ manufacturer points standings to give Chevrolet the top position in the standings across all three of NASCAR’s top series.

SANCHEZ READY TO BUILD OFF DOMINANT DAY AT TEXAS

While falling just one lap short of his first career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win, Rev Racing’s Nick Sanchez has already made his mark in the series. The 2022 ARCA Menards Series champion started the Texas Motor Speedway race weekend by taking his second pole win of the season. Sanchez looked to control the race in his No. 2 Silverado RST – sweeping the stage wins and overcoming a series of late-race cautions to pace the field for the final attempt at an overtime finish. Taking the white flag in the top position, contact with reigning NCTS champion Zane Smith at the entry of turn one took Sanchez out of contention – ultimately ending the race with a 16th-place finish.

The result doesn’t reflect the dominant performance put on by the 21-year-old Florida native. Sanchez led 168 of the 172 laps around the 1.5-mile Texas oval, giving him a laps-led percentage of 98.25%. The feat marks the most dominant performance by a driver in the NCTS since August 2012 when Timothy Peters led all 204 laps at Bristol Motor Speedway. Sanchez was able to accomplish this feat in only his fifth career start in the series – an achievement that even the series’ winningest driver Kyle Busch has yet to accomplish.

DILLON, LARSON, BUSCH WITH WINS ON NASCAR DIRT

Chevrolet’s Austin Dillon, Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch are among the few active drivers that have a NASCAR win on dirt to their name.

Dillon drove the No. 39 Richard Childress Racing Silverado to the victory in the inaugural Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway in 2013 – NASCAR’s return to dirt racing for the first time since 1970. Larson also found his way to victory lane at the Rossburg, Ohio, dirt track – taking the No. 24 GMS Racing Silverado to victory lane in the 2016 NCTS Aspen Dental Eldora Dirt Derby. Busch is the NCS’ most recent winner on dirt after notching his milestone 60th career NCS win in last year’s Food City Dirt Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

CHEVROLET SILVERADO ZR2 TO RETURN AS PACE VEHICLE AT BRISTOL

The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 will return as the pace vehicle for the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt race weekend for the second consecutive season. The Silverado ZR2 marked the first time the off-road trim was introduced to the Silverado. Knowledge gained from off-road racing through the desert makes the new Silverado ZR2 a supremely capable and confidence-inspiring truck, well-suited for controlling the field on the dirt at Bristol this weekend.

The race-proven Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Pace Truck features:

Standard 6.2L V-8 engine, delivering 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Silverado-first application of Multimatic 40mm DSSV spool-valve dampers, plus 33-inch off-road MT tires.
Specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations, including Terrain Mode, which allows one-pedal rock crawling.

New high-approach steel front bumper designed for off-road strength, durability and clearance that enables an improved 31.8-degree approach angle compared to other Silverado off-road models.

Chevy “flow-tie” emblem for increased air flow.

BOWTIE BULLETS:

QUOTABLE QUOTES:
ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 ADVENTHEALTH CAMARO ZL1

What do you think about racing on dirt in NASCAR?

“There are a few guys in the Cup Series that know so much about it and have a huge passion for it which is cool. Bristol dirt is a unique event and I practice on the simulator as much as I can and kind of hope for the best. I’m certainly not qualified to talk to NASCAR about track prep and things like that when it comes to the surface (laughs).”

What do you have to say about your finish at Richmond last weekend?

“It was great to leave Richmond with a third-place finish last week. That track hasn’t been very kind to me. I usually start off pretty good and then it kind of tapers off from there. I think the third-place finish shows that we are making progress at a track that traditionally hasn’t been that good for me. I think one of the important things you look for as a driver is if you’re making progress each week, or at each track that you go to. You don’t want to stay stagnant; you always want to improve in some way.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 BREZTRI CAMARO ZL1

What are you looking forward to most about the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt race?

“I think the biggest thing is an opportunity to get into the NASCAR Playoffs. Growing up as a dirt racer, I love getting on the dirt now and trying to find different lines out there and be creative. We’ll see what we get with the track when we show up there on Friday. You really have to watch the weather when it comes to a dirt track. We’ll monitor that and see what kind of track we’re going to have. I’m looking forward to it.”

You have a lot of experience dirt racing in several types of vehicles at Bristol Motor Speedway. Does that give you confidence heading into the race?

“For sure. We’ve won in a Late Model on the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt before, and that gives us a little bit of confidence heading into this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race on the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt. Last year, we ran up front in the Bristol Dirt Race and ended up blowing up from the dirt impacting the engine. This year, we’re more prepared. I think we’ll take something similar this year and try to watch the weather. Dirt racing is very weather-dependent so hopefully the rain stays away and the track conditions stay solid. Either way, with whatever track conditions we get we need a car that can adapt. We need to make the car very adaptable, and hopefully the driver is adaptable, too.”

How much more challenging is the weather element on a dirt track versus another track?

“When a dirt track gets wet, it changes how it drives a lot. Depending on how the team of track workers prep the track during the week, it can change. Right now, it’s sunny where I am at. If it’s hot and sunny at Bristol Motor Speedway, that track can harden up. Then, when the weather hits, if it rains, it softens that dirt up. The moisture gets down in the dirt and it changes the way the car drives. We’ll just be working hard to chase that and hopefully when the weather comes it is an advantage for this No. 3 team. From an asphalt standpoint, when it rains we wait until the track dries. From a dirt track standpoint, the dirt will soak up the moisture that it gets, soften the track up and create more grip. If it doesn’t get any moisture, it can be dry slick. The conditions change really fast on a dirt track. You really want to be maneuverable so that you can move around and chase where you see the darker colored dirt to find grip.”

Is there a key to winning at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend?

“For a dirt race, I think the big key is being successful in your heat race, getting a good starting position and then being able to change your line to find grip. If the top line comes in, you need to be able to move up, get to the top. If the bottom line is the place to be, then that’s where you need to be.”

What about racing on Easter night? That’s kind of different for you guys.

“Easter has always been a time for family and the good Lord above. We’ll still celebrate God on Sunday, and spend time with our families. I’m looking forward to having my son, Ace, at Bristol Motor Speedway. Motor Racing Outreach has an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids in the parking lot, so it’s pretty special and fun to see those kids all running around looking for eggs. They’ve done a really good job with Sunday service at the track for Easter weekend. But then, after everybody celebrates Easter, that evening you’ll see us racing on the dirt track at Bristol.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1

Larson on if his dirt experience gives him an advantage this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway:

“I definitely get excited to go to Bristol for the dirt race. People probably look at me being a favorite, but it’s so different than the dirt racing that I do throughout the week. I don’t really feel like I have an advantage like some people might think. Either way, I know our race cars are fast everywhere we go, so that gives me the most confidence. Hopefully, the track conditions are right, we can put on a good race and I can find my way to the front. Getting a win there would be pretty neat.”

KYLE BUSCH, NO. 8 CHEDDAR’S SCRATCH KITCHEN CAMARO ZL1

How significant was your win last year at the Bristol dirt race?

“I feel like last year’s win at the Bristol dirt race was pretty significant in the fact that I think I’ve won on every configuration that I’ve raced on at Bristol. It’s just a really fun track and I really love going there. It’s one of my favorites. It reminds me of one of my favorite tracks growing up, Winchester Speedway.”

Is there anything you can do to prepare for that specific race? Is it possible to learn something on the SIM?

“I don’t really do anything special to prepare for the Bristol dirt race. The biggest thing is just having dirt experience throughout the year of different vehicles and sliding them around and knowing where the grip is and where it isn’t and following the ever-changing conditions as the track deteriorates over time. It’s more about how good of a dirt racer you are and how good your team is knowing what adjustments to make to the car during different points of the race or the weekend. There’s really nothing on SIM that can correlate. The SIM might give you reps but I don’t think it gives you very good feel or anything besides visuals.”

How much does the surface of the track change during the weekend or the race itself?

“The track surface changes all the time. It’s super wet and super tacky and has a lot of chunks of mud that’ll fly off when it’s fresh and when it’s new. And then as you get that first layer of mud kind of burned off you get down to the harder layers of clay underneath it that are always drier because it doesn’t seem like the water really saturates all the way in and all the way through so it’s hard for the track to really always stay good and tacky and grippy. It really blows off is how we term it and then you have to run up on the cushion and get your right rear in some of the moisture that’s still there while that continues to burn off and move up the racetrack consistently.”

With the Next Gen cars, how can you and the team make the car drive better if you’re struggling?

“The Next Gen cars are a little bit tougher just because last year we saw Chase Briscoe shifting a lot and he was doing a really good job of getting that to work for him. It tried it and couldn’t get it to work for me. That just throws another wrench into the plan of if you shift or if you don’t shift. You really want to have good drive off. Drive off is the biggest thing where you feel like you can make time and make passes. You try to set up your passes coming off the corner and then do a slide job into the next corner but it doesn’t always work well. Trying to find momentum but yet having overall grip all the way around is key to Bristol dirt.”

JOSH BERRY, NO. 9 HOOTERS CAMARO ZL1

Berry on the dirt race at Bristol:

“The Bristol dirt race will be another new experience for me, but I’m excited to get there and see what we can do. I gained a little bit of dirt experience in the (CRAFTSMAN) Truck Series at Knoxville Raceway a couple years ago, so hopefully I can apply some of what I learned there. If we can continue to improve throughout the weekend, we’ll have a great shot at getting Hooters Chevrolet towards the front by the end.”

JONATHAN DAVENPORT, NO. 13 NUTRIEN AG SOLUTIONS CAMARO ZL1

“I’m nervously excited for my Cup debut on the dirt at Bristol. Totally different atmosphere, totally different kind of car and kind of racing. It’s going to be huge learning curve, but I’m up for the task and I feel good about it. I’m going to absorb all the information I can from my teammates Justin (Haley) and AJ (Allmendinger) to learn the car and learn how Cup drivers race. I’ve got great support from Kaulig Racing and my long-time partner Nutrien Ag Solutions. Every race car driver wants to drive in NASCAR; this is the best opportunity I’ve had to be able to make this dream come true.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 16 GAIN CAMARO ZL1

“I’m looking forward to trying something new this weekend at Bristol Dirt. I’m definitely nervous, last time I was on dirt was 2009, I think, in Tony Stewart’s Prelude to the Dream. This is a race I’ve watched the last couple years and I’m looking forward to at least trying it out. I’m not sure how it will go, but it will be fun to learn from my teammates Justin (Haley) and Jonathan (Davenport) on the dirt. We’ll see how it goes.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 RAPTORTOUGH.COM CAMARO ZL1

Byron having extra track time at Bristol:

“Bristol dirt has been a tough challenge for me. The first year it raced more like an asphalt track with how slick it got and it took on rubber. Last year, they did better with the track surface. It was more like a traditional dirt track, which didn’t really help me much. This year, I’m running the truck race with KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) and I’m excited to do that. I’m hoping those extra laps will help me on Sunday. I’m looking forward to having three days of on track time to have it really figured out for Sunday.”

JUSTIN HALEY, NO. 31 TIDE CAMARO ZL1

“I’m looking forward to dirt racing at Bristol, something I’m super passionate about. Jonathan Davenport will be bringing some of his dirt-racing expertise to Kaulig Racing this weekend as well. We’ve spent quite a bit of time on the simulator preparing for this weekend. We did really well last year and won our heat race. I’m also excited to have the power of Tide onboard our No. 31 Camaro ZL1 as part of our partnership with our good friends at Food City. This is definitely a weekend I’ve been looking forward to.”

NOAH GRAGSON, NO. 42 SUNSEEKER RESORTS CAMARO ZL1

“My goal this weekend is to complete all the laps and hopefully have a strong run. I’m not much of a ‘dirt’ guy so it’s challenging for me to know where on the track I need to run and how sideways I can get the Sunseeker Chevy. We’re up for a new opportunity and new challenge this weekend, I’ve had the experience of running the dirt race at Bristol in the Cup Series last year, and I finished it, so we are looking for some good luck and a good finish.”

ERIK JONES, NO. 43 CLUB WYNDHAM CAMARO ZL1

Now that you’ve had a year to think about it, how differently do these NextGen cars drive compared to any of the other cars you’ve driven before on dirt?

“Yeah, I don’t really think that the NextGen car drives a whole lot different on dirt compared to the old car. You know, overall, it has some of the same tendencies as what the old car did, but I thought the biggest change last year was due to some of the track prep. It stayed pretty tacky through the race, and we had some rain in the area, so it kind of kept the track in a heavy state, and it made the racing a lot different. I think this year might be kind of the same, it seems like we will still have some of that adverse weather in the area once again, so we’ll see how that plays out, but overall I think the cars are pretty similar.”

RICKY STENHOUSE JR., NO. 47 KROGER / IRISH SPRING CAMARO ZL1

Stenhouse Jr. on his dirt experience:

“I’d like to think past dirt experience helps me, but these cars are totally different than any sprint cars I’ve raced or really anything I’ve driven growing up. It’s still the dirt aspect. You are looking for the change in the dirt and how the cushion is. Last year, it had a pretty big cushion. So, that was fun. These cars I wouldn’t say are made for a cushion like that. It threw everyone for a loop and it was a bit different from what we were expecting. Just being able to adapt to different racetrack conditions makes me really comfortable going there.”

Stenhouse Jr. on car setup:

“The whole aspect of dirt racing is that it’s different every time you show up. It’s basically a short track, with high bank and not much grip. You’ve got to look for a worn out racetrack with high banks and it is similar to that. You want the setup to be based off of that.”

Stenhouse Jr. on dialing it in for the weekend:

“I really enjoy the dirt race, but I enjoy the regular Bristol by far the best of any racetrack,” said Stenhouse Jr. “Bristol dirt is fun and it’s unique and has its own characteristics. Last year, it was quite a bit different than the first year we ran it. The first year I thought it was technical and tricky with the holes and taking rubber and how dusty it was. I think the guys got it dialed in, and I’m looking forward to running the dirt race there again.”

Stenhouse Jr. on being close so many times:

“Now that the Daytona 500 is scratched off my win list, Bristol is definitely the next one on the list to win,” said Stenhouse Jr. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s the dirt race or the night race. I’ll take a win at Bristol. We’ve been so close in both the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series. I’ve been up front a lot at Bristol and it’s by far my favorite track that we go to on the circuit. Hopefully, we can get it done on the dirt this year.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Bowman on heading to the dirt race at Bristol:

“This race is always interesting. From the first year to last year, NASCAR did a good job of making some improvements and making the racing product better. Last year went pretty well for us finishing sixth. We have a better idea of what we need to have a good No. 48 Ally Chevy, but part of it is just keeping the race car out of the chaos. We have had a lot of fast Chevys this season and I think we will have another one this weekend, but we will find out Sunday.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 JOCKEY CAMARO ZL1

Why are you good at Bristol despite having no dirt experience?

“I really don’t know to be honest. I can say my team has given me a great car in both races and we have had a really good strategy. I am having fun racing on dirt. We’ll see what happens Sunday but we are going to Bristol with plans to win the race and have a heck of a party afterwards.”

How is your season so far?

“We have had three disappointing finishes in the last three weeks, but if you look closer we were running in the top five when things happened. If we keep running that fast we are going to be fine. It’s a long season and you are going to have some bad luck, but that will turn. We just have to keep running like we have been running.”

GRANT ENFINGER, NO. 23 CHAMPION POWER EQUIPMENT SILVERADO RST

Finishing eighth in last year’s truck race at Bristol added to the streak of top-10 finishes at dirt tracks for you. Do you expect to continue this streak this weekend and if so what are your expectations?

“I am looking forward to Bristol Motor Speedway on dirt. Hensley and I have been solid on the dirt in the past and My No. 23 Champion Power Equipment team has put in a lot of effort these past few weeks. We have learned a lot as a team and feel this is a great opportunity to regain some momentum heading into the last two races of this five week stretch.”

RAJAH CARUTH, NO. 24 WENDELL SCOTT FOUNDATION SILVERADO RST

Caruth’s thoughts on competing on the dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway:

“I’m really excited, honestly, to give Bristol Dirt a shot this weekend. I’ve done a handful of dirt races over the past year, with some starts at Millbridge, and both of the ARCA Menards Series races at Springfield and DuQuoin last summer were a lot of fun. I know we will have a lot of pace with our Wendell Scott Foundation Chevy Silverado, and I’m going to use lessons that Lightning McQueen and Doc Hudson have taught me – ‘Turn right to go left’. I’ve gotta look up some more quotes from that movie for this weekend, but definitely will rely on some of those lessons for sure.”

DANIEL DYE, NO. 43 SOLAR-FIT / RACE TO STOP SUICIDE SILVERADO RST

What experiences from racing an ARCA car on dirt do you think will translate to racing a truck on dirt?

“The ARCA races on dirt were pretty crazy last year, taking a heavy stock car and racing it around a couple of horse racing tracks was a unique experience, but I don’t think that experience is going to hurt us on Friday and Saturday for what we have going on at Bristol. It’s going to be a weird experience for me; I’ve raced on the concrete at Bristol a couple of times before in a Late Model and in an ARCA car, but it’s going to be completely different on the dirt. I’m looking forward to competing there in the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series with our No. 43 Chevrolet, it’ll be a new challenge for sure.”

CHASE PURDY, NO. 4 BAMA BUGGIES SILVERADO RST

What are your thoughts on racing on the dirt at Bristol?

“It’s interesting to say the least. I’m not exactly sure what to expect this year because I don’t think there has been as many races that have been run on it since the dirt has been put down as there was the last two years. I think that will make it interesting to see how the track is run in and takes rubber and what lines we can use. I’m not really sure what to expect with our Bama Buggies team but coming off a great weekend at Texas I’m really excited to get back to the track.”

Do you anything different in your preparation for a race on dirt?

“Yeah, I think you kind of just throw a lot of the things you would tend to do on asphalt tracks out the window here. There are some guys in the series you can talk to that are dirt guys like Stewart Friesen or anyone else that has run in dirt. Stewart is a good one because he’s run a truck a lot on dirt and he races dirt cars all the time when the trucks aren’t racing. I just think you have to go back and watch the previous years races to study because that’s all you have.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 51 HENDRICKCARS.COM SILVERADO RST

Are you looking forward to getting back in a KBM truck for three races?

“I’m looking forward it. Seeing how fast the trucks have been makes me excited to get in them. The tracks that we picked are ones that I really work on and get better, with the exception of Darlington, which is one that I just really, really love racing there.”

Do you feel the racing you’ve done outside of the Cup Series in recent years has helped contribute to your success in the Cup Series?

“Yeah – I think it gives me something to do and work towards during the weekend and not just be solely focused on the cup car. I can just kind of learn things here and there from the different vehicles I get into, and I feel like it makes me better when I get into the Cup car because I have more knowledge. Always kind of learning as a driver and I feel like it helps being able to race more.”

You scored KBM’s record-breaking 51st victory in 2016. How cool would it be to get the 100th win for them?

“It would be awesome. Dirt is not my forte but certainly with these guys I think we can hopefully go out and get a win. We’ll play it by ear how the weekend goes, but hopefully we can get there by the end.”

Team announces Colgate-Palmolive’s Irish Spring® brand sponsoring 2023 DAYTONA 500 CHAMPION Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 47 Kroger Camaro in Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Race

HARRISBURG, N.C. (April 5, 2023) – – JTG Daugherty Racing is ready to get down and dirty during the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Race with Colgate-Palmolive’s Irish Spring® brand. Irish Spring will lather the sides and bumper of Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 47 Kroger Racing Camaro in the 250-lap dirt event on Sunday, April 9th. Colgate-Palmolive will also sponsor the NASCAR Cup Series entry later this season at Darlington Raceway (9/3/2023).

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we’re all going to need a bottle of Irish Spring Body Wash after the Bristol Dirt Race that’s for sure,” said Stenhouse Jr. “It gets dirty inside the car and our pit crew gets covered in dirt, and I’m sure our fans also get dirty. It’s such a great sponsor for a dirt race.”

“Irish Spring is on a mission to transform the shower experience.” said Kevin Jordan-Deen VP & GM, Personal Care, North America. “Like Ricky, and the whole JTG Daugherty Racing team, we want every man to experience the unmistakable, exhilarating scent of Irish Spring that empowers you to confidently take on the day.”

The 2023 DAYTONA 500 CHAMPION driver has finished second at Bristol Motor Speedway multiple times. In the inaugural Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Race, he was runner-up to two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano. Also, the Olive Branch, Mississippi native has finished second twice on the .533-mile concrete oval surface.

“Now that the Daytona 500 is scratched off my win list, Bristol is definitely the next one on the list to win,” said Stenhouse Jr. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s the dirt race or the night race. I’ll take a win at either one. I’ve been up front a lot at Bristol and it’s my favorite track that we go to. I really enjoy the dirt race and the Bristol (concrete) track. Last year, it was different than the first year, which was technical and tricky. The guys got it dialed in, and I’m looking forward to running the dirt race there again.”

Live coverage of the 250-Lap event takes place on Sunday, April 9th at 7 PM ET live on FOX, PRN Radio and SiriusXM Satellite NASCAR Radio.

5 KYLE LARSON

Age: 30 (July 31, 1992)

Hometown: Elk Grove, California

Resides: Mooresville, North Carolina

Crew Chief: Kevin Meendering (interim)

Standings: 6th

No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

RICHMOND RECAP: With qualifying at Richmond Raceway canceled due to rain, Larson started ninth, per the NASCAR Cup Series rule book. After finishing stage one in second, he took the lead for the first time in stage two on lap 124. Larson reported that his No. 5 Chevy was becoming tight in the latter part of the stage before finishing the segment in eighth. In the final stage, he maintained a top-five position before a caution fell with 28 laps to go. A blistering 10.18-second four-tire pit stop (their best of the day) under yellow on lap 375 by the HendrickCars.com pit crew gave Larson the lead off of pit road and he didn’t look back for his first win of the season. The team’s five-man pit crew consists of Blaine Anderson (front-tire changer), R.J. Barnette (tire carrier), Brandon Harder (fueler), Brandon Johnson (jackman) and Calvin Teague (rear-tire changer).

WHAT THE WIN MEANS: Sunday’s triumph marks Larson’s 20th Cup Series victory in his 302nd start. He is now tied for 42nd on the all-time Cup Series wins list. Larson’s 14 wins at Hendrick Motorsports are the fourth-most in team history and the most in the series since the start of the 2021 season. The Richmond win is also his third career short-track victory in the Cup Series and second at the .75-mile track.

OUT IN FRONT: With 93 laps led at Richmond, Larson has now been at the front of the field for 363 laps through the first seven races in 2023. That total ranks second to Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron’s 385 laps led.

STUDYING THE STATS: The Elk Grove, California, native is also second to Byron this year for most laps run in the top five (971) and is fourth for most laps run in the top 10 (1,209). Larson, along with teammates Alex Bowman and Byron, are three of the six drivers tied for second with three top-five finishes on the season. In addition, Larson’s average running position of 10.00 is the sixth-best mark in the series.

TAKING TO THE BRISTOL DIRT: This Sunday, Larson returns to the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt. Last April, he led 27 laps, won the first stage and earned a fourth-place finish in his second start at the dirt Bristol, Tennessee, track. In the two years of Cup Series dirt races at Bristol, Larson has run the 10th-most laps in the top five (148) on this particular layout of the .533-mile track. A fifth-place finish at last year’s fall race on the concrete surface of Bristol saw the 30-year-old earn the distinction as the only driver to finish in the top five in both the dirt and concrete races in 2022. He also earned a victory on the concrete layout of Bristol in 2021.

DIRT DETAILS: As a young driver, Larson rose up through the dirt track racing ranks before establishing himself as one of motorsport’s most respected drivers on pavement and dirt. He showcased his dirt expertise in his 2016 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series win at Eldora Speedway. In 2021, Larson won many marquee dirt races including the Chili Bowl (of which he is a two-time winner), Kings Royal, Prairie Dirt Classic and the Knoxville Nationals. The champion of the 2021 Cup Series continues to compete on dirt tracks in addition to this NASCAR schedule. He is set to participate in the upcoming 2023 High Limit Sprint Car Series, which commences on April 11th at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas. He will also be hosting the Kyle Larson Late Model Challenge on Thursday at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee.

No. 9 Hooters Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

RUNNER-UP SHOWING IN RICHMOND: In his fourth race filling in as the driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for the injured Chase Elliott, Josh Berry scored a career-best runner-up finish in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway. Berry overcame a spin in the second stage to earn his first top-five finish in the Cup Series after a strategy call by the team paid off, giving the 32-year-old driver prime track position and fresh tires late in the race. The NASCAR Xfinity Series regular became the 26th different driver to score a top-five finish with Hendrick Motorsports and the 13th driver to record at least two top-10s through four starts with the team.

BRISTOL CONSISTENCY: The No. 9 team has two top-10 efforts in the two races held on dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway. Elliott was one of only three drivers, including teammate Kyle Larson, to finish inside the top 10 in both Cup Series events held at Bristol in 2022. The Dawsonville, Georgia, native finished eighth on the dirt before adding a second-place finish on the concrete track in September.

BERRY BACKGROUND: Berry has 69 career Xfinity Series starts to his name, with five victories, 20 top-five finishes, 40 top-10s and 657 laps led. The 2022 season marked his first full-time Xfinity season with Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports. He earned three wins and advanced to the Championship 4, ultimately placing fourth in the series standings. This season, the Hendersonville, Tennessee, native has impressed with three top-five results and six top-10s in the first seven Xfinity Series races. In his four Cup starts with Hendrick Motorsports, Berry has compiled one top-five finish, two top-10s and 10 laps led.

DIRT TRUCKIN’: Berry has one NASCAR national series start on dirt, having competed in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at Knoxville Raceway in 2021. After winning his heat race, Berry lined up in 11th for the feature event and ran as high as second. He finished third in stage one and eighth in stage two before getting involved in a late-race multi-truck incident that relegated him to a 28th-place finish.

HOOTERS IS BACK: Hooters will serve as the primary partner of the No. 9 team this Sunday at Bristol – its first of three races in 2023. Hooters will be back later this season at the Chicago Street Course in July and at Homestead-Miami Speedway in October during the playoffs. Earlier this year as part of the company’s 40th anniversary, Hooters unveiled a special Night Owl paint scheme for the 2023 season. Get a look at all the angles of the No. 9 Hooters Night Owl Chevrolet here.

JOHNSON CITY, TENNESSEE: This Saturday, April 8, Berry, along with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Larson, will make an appearance at the Hooters of Johnson City, Tennessee (2288 N. Roane Street). Berry and Larson will sign autographs starting at 11 a.m. ET. The No. 9 Hooters Night Owl Chevrolet will also make an appearance. Each of the first 100 fans to arrive will receive a free appetizer.

WHEN THE NO. 9 WINS, YOU WIN: Fans can visit Hooters on Mondays after Cup Series races this season and ask their server for free fried pickles when the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports team finishes in the top 10. If the No. 9 team wins, customers receive 10 free wings with any 10-wing purchase. Get more details at hooters.com/racing.

24 WILLIAM BYRON

Age: 25 (Nov. 29, 1997)

Hometown: Charlotte, North Carolina

Resides: Charlotte, North Carolina

Crew Chief: Brian Campe (interim)

Standings: 4th

No. 24 RaptorTough.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

RE-LIVING RICHMOND: With rain canceling NASCAR Cup Series qualifying and the lineup set by the metric formula, William Byron rolled off third for Sunday’s race at Richmond Raceway. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native quickly took over the lead and captured the stage one win. He continued to run within the top five for the majority of stage two, ultimately collecting stage points in third. Utilizing pit strategy during the final stage, Byron took the lead again, this time with 34 laps to go and looked poised to take home his third win of the season before being collected in an on-track incident. He was able to finish the race but was scored with a 24th-place result. After seven races in 2023, Byron is now fourth in the driver point standings, 35 markers behind leader and Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Alex Bowman.

24 IN ’23: Byron and the No. 24 team are off to a hot start in the 2023 Cup Series season. So far, the sixth-year Cup Series driver tops most statistical categories including laps led (385), wins (two), stage wins (five), average running position (7.08) and laps run in the top five (1,139). Byron is also tied for the most top-10 finishes in a stage (10) and is second for laps run in the top 10 (1,309).

STAGE WINNER: After winning stage one at Richmond this past Sunday, Byron now has five stage wins in 2023 – his most in a single season. In fact, his five stage wins this year are the most all-time by a driver through seven races. Byron has now won stage one in four of the last five races this season.

AWESOME AVERAGE: Through seven races, Byron’s 7.08 average running position is the best in the field. Four of his seven best Cup Series races based on average running position have come in the last five races (Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Phoenix Raceway, Circuit of The Americas and Richmond).

SLINGIN’ DIRT: This weekend’s event at Bristol Motor Speedway will mark the third time that the Cup Series will race on dirt at the Tennessee venue. Byron’s best showing came in 2021 where he started eighth and raced to a sixth-place finish. In those two races combined, Byron has the sixth-most laps run in the top five (170) and the fifth-most laps run in the top 10 (260). He does have one other start on dirt at the national level of NASCAR. In 2016, Byron competed in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway. After finishing fourth in his heat race, Byron went on to score a top-15 finish, crossing the finish line in 14th.

DOUBLE UP: In addition to his full-time driving duties in the Cup Series behind the wheel of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Byron will also compete in the Truck Series dirt race at Bristol with Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM). While this is the second time Byron has pulled double duty in 2023, this will be his first time in the Truck Series since his win at Martinsville Speedway in 2022. Running the No. 51 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet Silverado on Saturday, Byron is returning to the team that he raced for in his NASCAR national series debut. After making one start in 2015, Byron won an unprecedented seven races in 2016 en route to collecting rookie of the year honors and narrowly missing the Championship 4 race. He went on to help KBM win the owner’s championship the following weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

GOT 99 PROBLEMS, BUT WINNING AIN’T ONE: With his two victories to start the year, Byron continues to make his mark on the legacy of the No. 24 at the Cup Series level. Those two wins bring the No. 24 one victory away from 100. Currently fifth with 99 wins, the No. 24 is only behind the No. 3 with 101, the No. 2 with 102 wins, the No. 43 with 200 wins and the No. 11 with 228 wins on the all-time list.

RAPTOR® TOUGH: While he was close to putting the No. 24 RaptorTough.com Chevy in victory lane again, Byron has another shot to get it done when he climbs behind the wheel for Sunday’s dirt race at Bristol. RAPTOR® is a durable protective coating that is designed to tolerate the toughest climatic conditions and can be applied to a wide range of items, including truck beds, lawnmowers, outdoor furniture and more. With 16 pre-mixed colors available, it’s easy to personalize anything you want to protect. RAPTOR® is available at local paint distributors, auto parts stores, and online retailers. 48 Alex Bowman

Age: 29 (April 25, 1993)

Hometown: Tucson, Arizona

Resides: Concord, North Carolina

Crew Chief: Greg Ives (interim)

Standings: 1st

No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

RICHMOND IN THE REARVIEW: Last Sunday at Richmond Raceway, Alex Bowman started the 400-lap race from the top starting spot per the NASCAR rule book after qualifying was canceled due to inclement weather. The driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 finished the first and second stage in seventh en route to his eighth-place result. His finishing position marked his series-best sixth top-10 result this season.

MARQUEE MAN: Through seven NASCAR Cup Series races in 2023, Bowman is currently the regular season points leader, four markers ahead of the second-place driver. His top spot in the standings is a result of series-leading statistics for average finishing position (7.14) and top-10 finishes (six) as well as the second-most top-five finishes (three). Bowman’s average finish is better by more than two spots over the next closest competitor. The 29-year-old is one of four drivers to complete every lap raced this season.

ABOVE AVERAGE: Bowman’s average finish of 7.14 at this point in the season etches his name in Hendrick Motorsports’ history books. The Tucson, Arizona, native’s mark ties him for the seventh-best average finish (with Jimmie Johnson in 2013) through seven races in a season for the Rick Hendrick-owned organization. Bowman follows Johnson (3.86 in 2005 and 6.43 in 2016), Jeff Gordon (4.57 in 2009 and 5.00 in 2007), Ricky Rudd (5.43 in 1991), and Terry Labonte (6.43 in 1997) in this statistical category for the team.

STAT PACK: Bowman’s average running position of 9.36 ranks third in the Cup Series. In the 14 stages run this season, he has nine top-10 finishes and that is tied for fourth with three other drivers. In addition, Bowman has the sixth-most laps run in the top five (581) and the seventh-most laps run in the top 10 (1,095) this season.

DOWNRIGHT DIRTY: This Sunday, Bowman will make his third start on the dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway. When “The Last Great Colosseum” is covered in dirt, he has started in the top 10 in both appearances – seventh in 2021 and eighth in 2022. In last year’s event, Bowman notched a sixth-place finish in the first stage before taking the checkered flag in sixth.

PIT POWER: The No. 48 Ally Racing pit crew holds the fifth-fastest pit stop of the 2023 season. On lap 185 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the five-man crew made a four-tire pit stop of 9.776 seconds. The over-the-wall crew is made up of rear-tire changer Andrew Bridgeforth (rear-tire changer), Jacob Conley (fueler), Allen Holman (jackman), Scott Riddle (tire carrier) and Donnie Tasser (front-tire changer).

SAVE THEM ALL: Bowman and primary partner Ally are teaming up this year to bring back the Best Friends Animal Society donation effort. This week, the duo will make charitable contributions to the Morristown Hamblen Humane Society, which serves the local community in Bristol. Bowman and Ally will donate $4,800 to Best Friends and the Morristown Hamblen Humane Society. Ally will increase its donation to $10,000 if the No. 48 team wins on Sunday.

SUNDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will adorn two versions of its primary scheme during the 2023 Cup Series season. This weekend, the No. 48 Ally Chevy will adorn the “night” scheme for the first time this season. The black-based “night” scheme features plum and grapefruit stripes down the side with the sponsor in white lettering and the number in seafoam. The No. 48 Ally Chevy “day” scheme hosts a white base with a similar design to its nighttime counterpart. Check out all the angles of the new look here.

CLOSING IN ON 300: With Kyle Larson’s win at Richmond Raceway, Hendrick Motorsports is six points-paying victories away from 300 in the NASCAR Cup Series. Twenty drivers have combined to reach the organization’s current total of 294 wins, which is the most in the sport by any one team. The team’s three wins this season lead the series and are part of Hendrick Motorsports’ 36th multi-win season in the Cup Series. In each of the last 30 seasons, the organization has won at least two races.

ATOP THE BOX: For this weekend’s race, Kevin Meendering (No. 5), Tom Gray (No. 9), Brian Campe (No. 24) and Greg Ives (No. 48) will continue to fill in as crew chiefs. While Hendrick Motorsports recouped all of its driver, owner and playoff points in the appeal process, the crew chief suspensions remained. Meendering and Ives have a wide range of experience as crew chiefs and currently lead the organization’s NASCAR Xfinity Series efforts. In fact, Meendering was the winning crew chief on Sunday at Richmond. Gray is the former lead engineer on the No. 9, while Campe is Hendrick Motorsports’ technical director. Cliff Daniels (No. 5), Alan Gustafson (No. 9), Rudy Fugle (No. 24) and Blake Harris (No. 48) will return next weekend at Martinsville Speedway.

FORMAT FOCUS: Four qualifying heat races on Saturday night will set the lineup for Sunday’s main event on the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt. In the qualifying heats, drivers will be awarded race finishing position points and passing points. The total of those will set the lineup for Sunday’s main event. The driver with the most combined points will earn the pole position. The race finishing position points are awarded from 10 points for first in each qualifying race to one point for 10th or two points for ninth (depending on how many cars are in a particular heat race). Passing points are the difference between the assigned starting position and finishing position. If a driver goes forward in the qualifying heat, they earn passing points. If a driver goes backward or finishes where they started, no passing points are awarded.

TALES FROM THE DIRT: In last year’s dirt race at Bristol, Hendrick Motorsports placed three of its drivers in the top 10. Larson finished a team-best fourth and won stage one. Alex Bowman placed sixth and Chase Elliott took eighth. The organization is the only one to have at least three drivers finish in the top 10 there. In the inaugural running of the dirt race in 2021, William Byron finished sixth, while Elliott took home a 10th-place result. The team’s five top-10 finishes are the most among all teams in the two years of this event.

LEADERS OF THE PACK: To date, the organization has led 46% of all laps raced (798 of 1,735) in 2023. This season is the first time since 2007 that two drivers in the Hendrick Motorsports stable have led over 350 laps through seven races. Byron (385 laps led) and Larson (363 laps led) have done just that and rank one-two in laps led. This was also accomplished in 2007 with Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson and 1996 with Gordon and Terry Labonte. Both ’96 and ’07 resulted in two of the 14 Cup Series championships won by the Concord, North Carolina, based team.

TOP FIVE JIVE: Through seven races this season, Hendrick Motorsports has 11 top-five finishes – best in the series. That mark is tied for the most in team history at this point in the season. In 2007 and 2010, the organization also had 11 top-five finishes through seven races. What was one thing the ’07 and ’10 seasons had in common? They each ended in a Cup Series driver and owner championship for team owner Rick Hendrick.

STAGE SAVANTS: With six stage wins in 2023, Hendrick Motorsports has the most stage wins in the series. Those stage wins have come between two drivers – Byron (five) and Larson (one).

NIGHT SHIFT: Last year saw the organization win two of the six night races run, which was tied for the most in the series. Byron won at Martinsville in April, while Elliott took the checkered flag at Nashville Superspeedway in June. The 2023 schedule has eight night races on the docket.

ON THIS DATE: The last two races held on April 9 have been won by the all-time winningest team in the Cup Series garage. In 2022, Byron won at Martinsville and in 2017, Johnson won at Texas Motor Speedway.

WINNING WAYS: Since the start of the 2021 season, all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers rank among the top-five winningest drivers in the Cup Series. Larson’s 14 wins top the board, followed by Elliott’s seven. Byron and Bowman are tied for fourth with five victories each.

QUOTABLE /

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on if his dirt experience gives him an advantage this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway: “I definitely get excited to go to Bristol for the dirt race.

Josh Berry, driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the dirt race at Bristol: “The Bristol dirt race will be another new experience for me, but I’m excited to get there and see what we can do.

William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on having extra track time at Bristol: “Bristol dirt has been a tough challenge for me.

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on heading to the dirt race at Bristol: “This race is always interesting.

IMSA Long Beach preview with Renger van der Zande

Renger van der Zande

Transcript: Defending pole and race winner aims for repeat in No. 01 Cadillac V-Series.R

Renger van der Zande, co-driver with Sebastien Bourdais of the No. 01 Cadillac V-Series.R in the Grand Touring Prototype class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, met with the media via Zoom conference to preview the April 14-15 race in Long Beach, California.

Van der Zande and Bourdais will look to successfully defend their race win on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit. Cadillac has won every IMSA prototype race at Long Beach since the start of the DPi era in 2017.

Q&A with van der Zande transcript:

As you prepare for this event and look back on last year, what comes to mind?

“I think the Long Beach Grand Prix is always special. I finished second there a lot and then last year won it finally so happy to go there and defend the win. This year it’s with a new car. We haven’t raced the Cadillac LMDh on any street track. You never know what to expect. We know from the past that Long Beach is a hard track for tires; tire degradation can be hard. The DPi Cadillac was always good with that; I think it was an advantage compared to the competition. We have a weapon this year, which is Sebastien Bourdais my teammate. He was flying last year. I think it was very special to see him go. He even planted it in the wall and still drove back to first place. I had to drive it home and that’s a very comfortable position, though it’s never easy on a street track. Of course, I had to do some work. We got it done and we won that race. (This year) the car is a little heavier than the DPi, it has less downforce than a DPi, it has more power. At the same time are systems that under braking can be tricky, so what to do with all the bumps and different tarmac changes and the curbs. For example, around the fountain is something to consider. We are discussing that right now with our engineers to be best prepared. It’s an interesting street track. It’s always spectacular. It’s always something happening with that last hairpin, and it’s also a lot of stop and go, 90-degree corners that you have to deal with and, of course, the fountain. Turn 1 is always a guess on how much grip you have, flying toward that outside wall. It’s not an easy track and let’s see what we can make of it. Not much lost at Sebring, but at the same time I’m still digesting that one going to Long Beach.”

With new homologation, closer performance level and BoP rules with the GTP cars, will that open the door for other manufacturers to be on more level ground than previously at a street circuit?

“LMDh is a different platform where the weight is the same, the power is the same, the basics of the car are the same. We all have the same tires, the same weight, the same power. I do think that things are much closer. We’re all searching here and there for details and fine-tuning the setup – from the engine side, the chassis side and the aerodynamics and balance everything. What you saw at Sebring and Daytona is it’s pretty close. Going to Long Beach, I think it’s a new starting level. It have a strong feeling that it is more equal than ever before.”

Are there differences in the way the GTP cars are racing each other compared to the DPi?

“I feel it’s hard to overtake. The speeds are higher but we have to brake a bit earlier and the weight is higher as well, so the minimum speed is a lot lower. You rely on let’s brake super late and dive bomb someone and get away with it. I think if you dive bomb someone you’re going straight so you’re going to miss the corner. I feel that in traffic it makes a bigger difference. You can see the last part of Daytona, there were some faster cars in front of us and when there was traffic there were gaps and those gaps remained, so there are a few spots on track where you can overtake and you’re limited more than the DPi in those spots. I think with the DPi you could overtake someone on track because you have a bit more downforce, you had more minimum speed grip to get away with a mistake. These cars, if you out-brake yourself you’re actually going to out-brake yourself and go off the track. You have to be a bit more careful. Traffic management is super important. The GTs are really in cooperation with the GTPs.”

Talk about the Long Beach hairpin and the role it plays in the race.

“I think the steering on our Cadillac is a bit better than it was on the DPi, so I think that won’t be a problem. We’ve seen a lot of action there, some misfortune for some people stranded there. It’s one of those do-or-dies on the last corner of the last lap of the race. That makes Long Beach a difficult street track with no room for error. Around that corner there really is only one line. If you dive bomb on the inside you probably won’t get away with it. If you do, might get lucky and win that race. Also in GTP, spare parts are at a premium, we don’t have that much stock. If you keep on taking off bits of the car in the first practice, second practice and then qualifying, it’s something to keep in mind. That last corner is special, and the corner before that – the long left-hander with all the drifting rubber – it’s easy to screw it up a well.”

About cold tires on the GTP car.

“Our cold tires are super tricky. I had an LMP2 driver to come me and ask if we were still charging our hybrid system when we were coming out of the pits because why are you so slow. I said nothing like that, it’s just no grip at all. If you’re coming out of the pits and you’re racing each other you have zero grip. The GTP drivers must think we have a problem, but really trying to get a read on the tires, temperature and grip. So, that’s another element in this championship.”

Mike Joy Will Race Historic Trans Am at Toyota/Save Mart 350

From the booth to behind the wheel at NASCAR Cup Series weekend

SONOMA, Calif. (April 5, 2023) – Legendary NASCAR on FOX Broadcaster Mike Joy will be racing in the Historic Trans Am Series during NASCAR weekend in Sonoma alongside his son Scott. Equally as comfortable in the driver’s seat as the broadcast booth, Joy will go from behind the wheel on Saturday to in front of the camera on Sunday June 11 for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series race which airs at 12:30 pm PT.

Joy, who does the play by play for NASCAR on FOX each weekend will be wrapping up FOX’s series coverage for the season when the race is broadcast on the FOX network.

The Historic Trans Am series is made up of the actual Trans Am race cars that raced from 1966-1972 when it was the biggest stock bodied car racing series in America, with drivers like Parnelli Jones, Mark Donohue and Dan Gurney. The Mustangs, Camaros, Javelins, Challengers, ‘Cudas and Firebirds racing in Historic Trans Am are all restored to the series’ 1966-1972 rules. It is fitting that Joy should choose to race this event at Sonoma, because it was right here in 1992 that this series kicked off during the Wine Country Classic held at Sonoma Raceway.

Offering the perfect mix of modern racing technology and historic horsepower, the NASCAR race weekend in Sonoma will entertain fans with three full days of racing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 9, 10 and 11. For the first time ever, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will race on Saturday afternoon at the DoorDash 250 after the Historic Trans Am race in the morning.

Tickets for all 2023 Sonoma Raceway events are available now at SonomaRaceway.com

Sonoma Raceway is a 2.52-mile and 12-turn road course and quarter-mile drag strip located at Sears Point in Sonoma County, California. Built in 1968 the track is carved into rolling hills with 160 ft of total elevation change. It is host to one of the few NASCAR Cup Series races each year that are run on road courses. It is one of the world’s busiest racing facilities, with track activity scheduled an average of 340 days a year. A complete and versatile motorsports complex, it is home to one of the nation’s only high-performance automotive industrial parks with approximately 70 tenants.

Transportation Industry Software Company, FR8LOGIK, Backs Boyd at Bristol

Mooresville, NC (April 5, 2023) – Spencer Boyd Racing announced today that they have reached a sponsorship agreement with their first software company partner, FR8LOGIK. The start-up, founded by transportation industry veterans, will be the primary sponsor of Spencer Boyd’s No. 12 Chevrolet Silverado in the upcoming dirt race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

“The transportation industry is very well represented in NASCAR,” noted Spencer Boyd. “From sponsorship, to fans in the stands, to our hauler drivers bringing our race cars to the track, trucking is a part of racing. I love to see the progress when a software company introduces a product that can help streamline the complex world of getting things from point A to point B. I think we all have a better appreciation for it since the pandemic and no longer want to hear the phrase ‘supply chain issues’. I’m pumped to have them on board with a killer looking truck!”

FR8LOGIK is a team of industry experts, AI technologists, data scientists, and automation engineers. The sole aim is to unlock and activate untapped opportunity within logistics for shippers, freight agencies, 3PLs, and beyond.

Co-Founder, Stefan Jensen commented on the partnership with Boyd, “We targeted NASCAR for our rollout knowing the correlation that exists with our industry. The ability to use live data for crucial game time decisions creates a competitive advantage. Whether you’re going 200mph, or navigating supply chain intricacies, we’re like minded in wanting to finish first. Spencer does an amazing job in getting his sponsor’s name out there, so we naturally gravitated to him. The technical message we want to communicate is that we create intuitive signals, develop digital workflows, and advance supply chain efficiency. The simple truth is that we want to make the complicated job of shipping easier for the men and women behind the scenes.”

Visit FR8LOGIK.com for more information.

NASCAR returned to dirt racing at Bristol in 2021. This will be Boyd’s third start at the famed track’s dirt configuration. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday, April 8, 2023 airs live on FS1 at 8:00pm ET.

William Byron – No. 51 HendrickCars.com Silverado Craftsman Trucks Bristol Dirt Preview

William Byron: Driver, No. 51 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Overview:

Location: Bristol Motor Speedway (half-mile, dirt oval)
Date/Broadcast: April 8, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

The Beat on Byron:

William Byron makes his KBM return behind the wheel of the No. 51 Silverado Saturday in his first event on his three-race schedule in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this season. Byron collected a Truck-Series leading seven victories and 727 laps led driving for KBM in 2016. He earned Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors that season and led the No. 9 team to an owner’s championship with his victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The North Carolina native returned to victory lane in the Truck Series last year leading a race-high 94 laps for Spire Motorsports in the HendrickCars.com Silverado at Martinsville Speedway. Across 26 career starts in NASCAR’s Truck Series, the 25-year-old driver has totaled eight wins, three poles, 821 laps led, 12 top-five and 17 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 10.7.

HendrickCars.com, the online home for everything Hendrick Automotive Group, will be the primary sponsor on Byron’s Silverado for his three-race schedule. The Ricky Hendrick tribute scheme will also adorn the No. 51 for the races at Darlington Raceway May 12 and North Wilkesboro Speedway May 20. All three races on Byron’s schedule will mark his first starts in the Truck Series at the respective venues. Across two starts in the Cup Series on the dirt at Bristol, Byron has compiled and average finish of 12.0, with a best result of sixth coming in last year’s race. His lone Truck Series race on dirt came with KBM at Eldora Speedway where he finished ninth.

With his series leading two wins across the first seven races, Byron now has six career NASCAR Cup Series victories. In 2022, he finished a career-best sixth in the Cup Series championship standings and ranked third in the series with 746 laps led. Across 187 career Cup Series starts he has totaled nine poles, 1990 laps led, 29 top-five and 65 top-10 finishes. Between his time at KBM and graduating to the Cup Series in 2018, Byron captured an Xfinity Series championship and Rookie of the Year Honors for Jr. Motorsports in 2017 after totaling four wins, two poles, 262 laps led, 12 top-five and 22 top-10 finishes.

Byron, who collected KBM’s Truck Series record-breaking 51st victory at Kentucky Speedway in 2016 can etch his mark in the KBM historical archives again this weekend as he looks to collect the organization’s 100th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory. KBM-owner driver Kyle Busch collected KBM’s record-extending 99th-career victory with his dominant victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March leaving his organization one shy of the century mark. Overall, 18 different drivers have won at least race behind the wheel of a KBM truck, led by Busch’s 47. Four drivers rank second on the list with seven victories: Byron, Christopher Bell, Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek. KBM has collected three of those victories on dirt, most recently with Martin Truex Jr. at Bristol in 2021. Bubba Wallace (2014) and Bell (2015) each scored victories at Eldora Speedway.

Veteran crew chief Brian Pattie will call the shots for the No. 51 team this year in his first season at KBM after spending the last 14 seasons atop the pit box in the NASCAR Cup Series. It took the veteran signal caller just two races to get his first win at KBM, winning with KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In the Cup Series, his drivers produced six wins, nine poles, 57 top-five and 131 top-10 finishes across 528 starts. In 2012, he guided Clint Bowyer to three victories and a runner-up finish in the Cup Series championship standings. In 2017, he guided Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to two wins and a berth in the playoffs. The Florida native has also recorded 11 wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and he now has two wins as a crew chief in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. This will be Pattie’s first time atop the pit box for a Truck Series event on the dirt at Bristol. He has two Cup Series starts, including a second-place finish with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 2021.

The No. 51 team currently ranks fifth in the Craftsman Truck Series owner’s point standings after five races. Across five starts in 2023, the team has recorded one win, one pole, 98 laps led, two top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 9.8. Owner-driver Kyle Busch will return to the No. 51 at Martinsville Speedway April 14.

William Byron, Driver Q&A:

Burton, DEX Imaging Team Ready To Hit the Dirt at Bristol

After a memorable trip to Richmond Raceway, Harrison Burton and the No. 21 DEX Imaging team now are focusing the second of three consecutive short track races in the early portion of the 2023 Cup Series schedule. This Easter weekend finds them at Bristol Motor Speedway, where the high-banked, half-mile concrete oval has been covered in clay for the Food City Dirt Race on Sunday night.

“Last weekend in Richmond was a solid result for the No. 21 Ford, but it was also a great day for the Wood Brothers family,” crew chief Brian Wilson said. “To be honored by your home state with the Wood Brothers Racing Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a great accomplishment.”

Wilson said the upcoming dirt race also promises to be one to remember.

“Looking forward to this weekend in Bristol, we will continue what has become one of the most unique and dynamic events in NASCAR,” he said. “Last year we were able to score a top-20 result which we will build from this year.

“With a year of dirt racing notes we can now be more detailed on our practice plan for this year.”

Wilson said the DEX Imaging team, like their peers in the Cup Series, will be trying to predict just what kind of racing surface they’ll see, then tune their cars accordingly.

“A lot of the discussion this week has centered around the weather forecast and how often NASCAR will water the track,” he said. “Keeping up with the track as it dries and slicks off will be part of the challenge for all teams.

“One thing we know for sure is that the No. 21 DEX Imaging Mustang will look sharp with a little bit of dirt on the paint scheme.”

Two practice sessions are scheduled for Friday evening, the first beginning at 6:35 p.m. and the final one at 8:32 p.m.

FOX Sports 1 will carry the TV coverage.

The first of four 15-lap qualifying races is set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, to be followed by the remaining three. FOX Sports 2 will broadcast those races.

The 250-lap feature event is scheduled to get the green flag just after 7 p.m. on Sunday with TV coverage on FOX.

Stage breaks are planned for Laps 75 and 150.

Since its founding, the team won 99 races (including at least one race in every decade for the last seven decades) and 120 poles in NASCAR’s top-tier series. Fielding only Ford products for its entire history, the Wood Brothers own the longest association of any motorsports team with a single manufacturer. Glenn’s brother, Leonard, is known for inventing the modern pit stop. The team currently runs the Ford Mustang driven by Harrison Burton in the famous No. 21 racer.
