Flying Lizard Takes Championship Fight to Portugal for Lamborghini Grand Finals

Team to give away kid’s electric Unicorn Lamborghini to lucky fan

SONOMA, Calif., (October 28, 2022) – Ten years have passed since the Flying Lizard Motorsports brand has been seen in professional competition outside of North America, and next week, the sports car racing champions return to Europe to close out the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America championship in Portugal. With ten rounds of racing complete, the No. 64 Lamborghini Newport Beach-sponsored car of Tom Tait (Am) and the No. 14 Lamborghini Newport Beach car of Slade Stewart will close out the 2022 season at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão. Slade Stewart enters the event leading the LB Cup class by nine points and will have two final races to clinch the title.

“What a great first season we have had for Flying Lizard Motorsports in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo championship,” said Program Manager Darren Law. “This series has been so fun to race, extremely competitive and very well run. To have a shot at a championship title in our first venture into Super Trofeo shows the depth of our team. Tom and Slade have done an amazing job on track this year, we have had a great time and some great racing, and we are all looking forward to spending time in Portugal. We have never raced at Portimão and I hear so many great things about this track, we can’t wait to get there and hopefully close out this season on a high note!”

The event will begin with five practice sessions spread out between Tuesday, November 1, and Wednesday, November 2. On Thursday, the participants will have two practice sessions before a pair of 20-minute qualifying sessions that will set the grid for the final two Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America races of the season on Friday, November 4, crowning the new 2022 champions.

A total of 27 entries will be coming from the North American series to represent the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) at the international event. Tom Tait and the No. 64 Lamborghini will be one of eight cars competing in the Am class, eager to close out the 2022 season with a podium finish. With three wins in his No. 14 pink unicorn Lamborghini, Slade Stewart enters into the final doubleheader of the year as the LB Cup points leader. Nine points separate Stewart from Jon Hirshberg and Ofir Levy, who sit tied for second place with 94 points while Charlie Martin and Jason Gagne-Heats hold third place with another tie at 92 points. A 15-point award goes to each race winner, and then 12 points to second place, 10 to third, then 8, six, five, and four. One point is awarded for pole position, of which Steward has won five in ten completed races.

The global portion of the Grand Finals begins on Saturday, November 5 with another 20-minute pair of qualifying sessions were the various Super Trofeo series combine to set the grid for the final set of races. The Lamborghini Grand Finals features a combination of the North America, Asia, and Europe-based championships, competing together for two final races on Saturday and Sunday, the 5th and 6th, respectively.

With 15 turns over 2.891 miles, the Algarve International Circuit is located in the Algarve region of Portugal. The track will be new to the Lizard competitors and engineers, though the team has spent ample time testing in the United States and on simulators for the big event.

The set of four races will air live with English commentary on the Lamborghini Squadra Corse YouTube page, and Flying Lizard Motorsports will offer live updates and behind-the-scenes content on the team’s social media channels the week of the event.

Slade Stewart | No. 14 Lamborghini

We are really excited heading into the US and World Finals in Portimão. It has been an incredibly exciting season up until now; learning a new car and pretty much all of the tracks, a professional series in Lamborghini Super Trofeo, working with the premier race team in the business, Flying Lizard Motorsports. All I can say is it has been an awesome experience so far. We have had our highs getting on the podium, we have had our lows, at races like Road America. Through all of it, we have charged forward and head into the Grand Finals leading the points series for LB Cup. I have to extend a special thanks to the FLM family, the fans, Tom Tait, Andy Lee, Eddie Martin, and my wife and children for their support and coaching.

Tom Tait | No. 63 Lamborghini

It has been a very fun and challenging year, and a year of learning from a number of very experienced people including but not limited to some on-track and psychological coaching from PT, Corey Lewis, Andy Lee, pranks, and advice from my teammate Slade Stewart, and a lot of personal coaching from my wife Faye Tait, who has attended every race.

Flying Lizard Motorsports has provided Slade Stewart and me with a very professional, successful, and seasoned group of race-winning people, all working together to form, in our opinion, the best team in the paddock. Competing for FLM and Pietro Frigerio’s Lamborghini Newport Beach has been a fantastic opportunity! The skill level of the racing drivers competing in the 2022 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship is very high, and a number of these drivers can finish amongst the pro drivers. New tracks and fast drivers have made every race very challenging.

We have improved our finishing result at each 2022 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship race, and we finished in the top 5 in the last U.S. race at VIR.

Flying Lizard Motorsports has a long history of winning many championships and currently leads the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Championship in the LB Cup category, with Slade Stewart (aka. the best teammate in the world). The Flying Lizard Motorsports team and drivers will be pushing very hard at the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Grand Finals in both the AM category and the LB Cup category to achieve podium and championship results. We look forward to the challenge!

General Motors’ Keith Rodden to Join Richard Childress Racing as Crew Chief of the No. 3 Chevrolet in 2023

Rodden’s pairing with Austin Dillon Highlights Strength of Chevy Racing Program: Justin Alexander Named RCR’s Director of Vehicle Performance

WELCOME, North Carolina (October 28, 2022) — Keith Rodden will join Richard Childress Racing as crew chief of the No. 3 Chevrolet driven by Austin Dillon in 2023.

Rodden, an experienced crew chief and race engineer, most recently worked on the Motorsports Competition NASCAR strategy group at General Motors. In that role, Rodden focused on working with Chevy race teams on how to best approach track tests, practice sessions, and race events to optimize race results. He also worked as the General Motors WFT project lead, serving as test team crew chief.

A North Carolina State University grad and Denver, North Carolina native, Rodden began his professional motorsports career in 2003 with owner Andy Petree. He worked as either a crew chief or engineer with top-tier NASCAR teams such as Hendrick Motorsports, Evernham Motorsports, Richard Petty Motorsports, Team Red Bull, and Chip Ganassi Racing. Notably, Rodden worked for over a decade with Kasey Kahne, including as crew chief of the No. 5 Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports.

“The addition of Keith Rodden to the Richard Childress Racing team highlights the ‘One Team’ approach to our race program and the commitment that our manufacturer partner has made to elevating all of the Chevy NASCAR teams with a shared approach to data gathering and technical development,” said Andy Petree, vice president of competition for Richard Childress Racing. “I’ve known and worked with Keith Rodden since the beginning of his NASCAR career, and I can confidently say that he will be a great match for Austin Dillon and our team at Richard Childress Racing. We’d like to thank Justin Alexander for his contributions to the No. 3 team and know that he will do a great job continuing to support RCR in his new role.”

Rodden assumes crew chief duties from Justin Alexander, who has been named the director of vehicle performance for Richard Childress Racing. Alexander guided Dillon to all four of his NASCAR Cup Series wins as crew chief of the No. 3 Chevrolet.

“In working with Richard Childress Racing, and in particular the No. 3 team, over the years, I’ve been really impressed with their competitive nature, dedication to hard work and emphasis on partner relationships,” said Rodden. “I’m looking forward to getting back into a team crew chief role and doing so with one of the strongest teams in the Team Chevy family. “

Alex Bowman to return at Phoenix Raceway

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 28, 2022) – Alex Bowman will return to the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the Nov. 6 NASCAR Cup Series season finale at Phoenix Raceway after being medically cleared to compete.

Bowman, 29, suffered a concussion Sept. 25 at Texas Motor Speedway. The Tucson, Arizona, native was cleared Thursday following a full evaluation by Dr. Michael “Micky” Collins, clinical director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

“We’re thrilled Alex is 100% and will have the opportunity to race at his home track,” said Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. “Throughout this process, he’s been incredibly diligent about following the advice of his doctors and prioritizing his health. All of us look forward to welcoming Alex back and seeing him finish 2022 with his No. 48 teammates.”

Noah Gragson has filled in for Bowman for the last four Cup Series races and will drive the No. 48 Chevrolet again this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. In the substitute role, he has posted a best finish of 11th, which came Oct. 16 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“Due to the timing (of the medical clearance), everyone agreed it was best to stick with our plan for Martinsville and allow the team to fully prepare for Alex’s return next weekend,” Andrews said. “On behalf of everyone at Hendrick Motorsports, we’re grateful to Noah for stepping in and doing a terrific job under difficult circumstances. He’s a big talent and has been a complete professional.”

Chevrolet Clinches 41st NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer’s Championship

Back-to-Back Series Titles

DETROIT (October 28, 2022) – Chevrolet clinched the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer’s Championship – its second year straight – with two races remaining in the season. The 2022 season marks the manufacturer’s series-leading 41st title in NASCAR’s premier series, captured in the debut season of the Next Gen Camaro ZL1.

“We set goals of winning championships at the beginning of every season, and the NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer’s Championship is one that’s a high priority,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “This championship is a result of a one-team effort from Hendrick Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, Trackhouse Racing, Petty GMS, Kaulig Racing, JTG Daugherty and Spire Motorsports. We’d also like to thank the Chevrolet engineers, drivers, crew chiefs and owners who are part of this championship.”

Chevrolet drivers put the Next Gen Camaro ZL1 in victory lane 19 times in 34 NASCAR Cup Series races thus far, more than its manufacturer competitors combined. Nine drivers from four different Chevrolet teams have contributed wins: Chase Elliott (five wins; series-leading); Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson (three wins each); Ross Chastain and William Byron (two wins each); and Alex Bowman, Daniel Suarez, Austin Dillon and Erik Jones (one win each). Kaulig Racing’s AJ Allmendinger also contributed to the points total that led to the championship title.

The NASCAR Cup Series regular season saw Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott take the title, with eight Chevrolet drivers advancing to the playoffs. Chevrolet went on to maintain 50 percent of the playoff field through the Round of 12, with three Chevrolet drivers remaining in the Round of 8 to compete for a spot in the Championship 4.

Chevrolet clinched the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series Manufacturer’s Championship two weeks ago at Las Vegas with its 500th all-time series win.

“It’s great to see the momentum by the Chevrolet teams in both the Cup and Xfinity series that’s resulted in manufacturers’ championships in both series in back-to-back years,” Campbell said.

Phoenix Raceway will be the final stop of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, where the 312-mile championship race on Sunday, November 6, will crown the Cup Series’ champion.

Toyota: Upgraded GR Supra GT4 EVO Launched for 2023

Toyota City, Japan, Oct 28, 2022 – (JCN Newswire) – TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has launched an updated GR Supra GT4 race car for the 2023 season which delivers enhanced braking, handling and engine performance.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has extensively utilised customer and driver feedback to improve the dedicated race car, which is already a champion in three regions, Japan, the United States and Europe, and has earned over 100 podium finishes.

Since its first full racing season in 2020, more than 50 GR Supra GT4 cars have participated in races around the world, and customers have earned victories in 11 national and international GT4 championships. In August this year, the car celebrated its 50th class win in a major championship(1).

But competition within the popular GT4 category is intense and development of the GR Supra GT4 has continued with an EVO update for the coming season, to ensure TOYOTA GAZOO Racing customers can continue to achieve top results in the future.

At events around the world since the car’s launch, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing engineers have provided track support to customer teams and drivers, who delivered valuable insights which are only possible via the pressure of on-track competition.

User feedback and requests have flowed directly into the development of the GR Supra GT4 EVO, which follows TOYOTA’s commitment to continuous improvement and building ever-better motorsports-bred cars for customers.

In response to constructive customer feedback and the results of detailed evaluations, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing development engineers focused their efforts on three key areas: brakes, handling and engine.

Thanks to an improved brake system design, new ABS settings, latest KW damper technology and updated anti-roll bar specification, the GR Supra GT4 EVO will deliver improved handling and higher cornering speeds.

Drivers will be able to push for faster lap times due to increased power and an optimised torque curve of the 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbocharged engine, which benefits from more effective cooling.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s close cooperation with its GT4 teams and drivers, and their valuable first-hand feedback, helped set specific targets for the upgrade. The GR Supra GT4 EVO is therefore easier to drive for ambitious amateur drivers whilst it also provides the precise performance demanded by professional racers.

The contact companies in each region for GT4 vehicle sales and customer support, including sales of spare parts and engineering support, are TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Europe GmbH for Europe, TRD U.S.A., Inc. for North America, and TOYOTA CUSTOMIZING & DEVELOPMENT Co., Ltd. for Japan and Asia.

The GR Supra GT4 EVO will make its competitive debut in January 2023 at the 24 Hours of Daytona, the first round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season.

Orders for the GR Supra GT4 EVO will be taken from October 28 2022 and an upgrade kit will be available to existing GR Supra GT4 customers.

Jon McKennedy Recovers from Late Crash to Win 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Championship

Tommy Baldwin Racing wins owner championship, Austin Beers named Sunoco Rookie of the Year

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 27, 2022) – In a battle that came down to the final race – and final laps – of the season at Martinsville Speedway, Jon McKennedy came out on top to win his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship while NASCAR Cup Series regular Corey LaJoie won the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 200.

A quartet of drivers – McKennedy, Ron Silk, defending series champion Justin Bonsignore, and Eric Goodale – were within 13 points of each other heading into the season finale.

The first shoe fell for a contender when Silk’s championship hopes took a hit shortly after being lapped by leader LaJoie. He then spun at the exit of Turn 2 to bring out the caution on Lap 130. Several leaders pitted during the caution, bringing McKennedy to the lead as Bonsignore restarted in third behind him on the inside row.

McKennedy and Bonsignore quickly jumped out ahead of the field, but a caution on Lap 147 allowed Silk to get back on the lead lap while Bonsignore was forced to pit with mechanical issues that ended his race, knocking him out of championship contention.

A late caution put McKennedy and Jimmy Blewett on the front row with LaJoie, who had the strongest car all night, right behind them. On the restart with eight laps to go, all three came together going into Turn 3, with McKennedy and Blewett getting the worst of it and LaJoie regaining the lead.

Despite damage from that crash, McKennedy was able to recover to finish 12th on the final restart with two laps to go, and prevailed over Silk, who finished 11th, by six points for the title. Goodale finished seventh in the race and third in the standings, while Bonsignore’s troubles relegated him to a 29th-place finish and fourth on the season.

McKennedy thought his shot at a championship was over after the late wreck.

“We came so close to winning one of the biggest races of the year, got wrecked, I thought it was over at that point,” McKennedy said after the race. “But luckily, we were able to still come through and win the championship. It’s just unbelievable, it’s an amazing feeling to be a NASCAR Modified Tour champion.”

McKennedy had one win on the season at Claremont Speedway (New Hampshire), but proved consistency over the course of the season wins championships. He ended the year with seven top-five and 13 top-10 results in the 16 races.

LaJoie held onto the lead on the final restart to win his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race and the famed Martinsville grandfather clock, leading 110 laps.

The 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship went to the No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing modified that was driven by a trio of drivers this season – Blewett, Doug Coby, and Mike Christopher Jr. They started off strong and never let off the gas after winning back-to-back races at Riverhead Raceway (Long Island, New York) and Lee USA Speedway (New Hampshire) in May with Coby piloting the car. The team then won a third in a row to finish the month as Christopher became the third different driver to win for the team as he crossed the line first at Jennerstown Speedway (Pennsylvania).

Blewett (Wall Stadium – New Jersey) and Coby (Langley Speedway – Hampton, Virginia) would go on to bring the team’s win total to five of the season’s 16 races. The team also recorded nine top-five and 14 top-10 finishes on the season.

Austin Beers was crowned the Sunoco Rookie of the Year. The driver of the No. 64 had one top five (a third-place finish at Langley) and seven top 10s over the 16 races.

The remainder of the weekend at Martinsville Speedway will set the Championship 4 field for the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Cup Series title battles the following week at Phoenix Raceway. As part of its 75th Anniversary season, Martinsville Speedway will host NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff practice and qualifying on Friday, Oct. 28 at 4:00 p.m., penultimate races of the Xfinity Series Playoffs in the Dead On Tools 250 on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3:00 p.m. and the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs in the Xfinity 500 on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2:00 p.m.

Signs and Symptoms of Water in Your Diesel Tanks

Photo by Jennifer Latuperisa-Andresen on Unsplash

Diesel that’s contaminated with water won’t just affect your vehicle’s performance, it can do serious damage to your engine. If you’d like to avoid costly repair bills then an experienced mobile diesel mechanic Brisbane wide can help you out with testing and maintenance to keep water out of your diesel tanks. A professional technician will have the tools and diagnostic equipment to easily spot water contamination and address the cause before it can ruin the engine. Even if you’re staying on top of your regular maintenance schedule, you’ll need to keep an eye out for the signs and symptoms of water contamination in your diesel tanks.

Why Does Water Collect in Diesel Tanks?

Water and diesel are a bad mix. While it’s common to find them together, excessive amounts of water will eventually cause major engine damage. There are three common sources of water in diesel tanks:

  1. Handling issues. Diesel is hygroscopic, meaning it holds onto large amounts of water. The result is that water is often found in diesel tanks – including the ones at your local service station. Because of this, it’s possible to introduce diesel into your own vehicle when refilling from contaminated storage tanks.
  2. Fuel tank leaks. Small leaks in the diesel tank, fuel filler cap or fuel filler neck can allow water to enter the tank. Simple washing or rain can contaminate the fuel and cause major problems for your engine.
  3. Condensation. Unlike petrol, diesel is a very stable fuel source that produces relatively low amounts of vapour. This creates a unique problem in diesel tanks. The lack of vapour means that tanks often contain large amounts of air. As the ambient temperature changes, the tank draws in humid air and moisture condensates on the inside of the tank walls. Eventually, this condensation process can result in large buildups of water in your diesel tanks.

Symptoms of Water in Diesel

Small amounts of water in your diesel tank is common and it won’t cause immediate problems. In most cases, your water separator will take care of the issue before it can do any damage to the tank or engine. However, large amounts of water in the tank creates an environment that allows diesel-eating bacteria to thrive. The water will also cause the tank to rust, and these issues work together to contaminate the fuel and ruin major engine components. Persistent corrosion in diesel tanks will eventually destroy your fuel pumps and injectors, and it can even cause water damage to core engine components. In the worst case, you could find yourself rebuilding both the engine and your fuel system.

There are a few key signs that there is excessive amounts of water in your diesel tanks:

  • A noticeable loss of engine power
  • Trouble starting the engine
  • Uneven idle speeds
  • Lag when accelerating
  • Strange exhaust colours like white smoke

How to Check for Water in Your Diesel

Water in your diesel tanks can quickly cause large amounts of damage. A mobile diesel mechanic Brisbane wide will be equipped with tools that make it easy for them to diagnose the presence of water in your tanks. In between service appointments, there are a few simple ways to check for water in your diesel supply:

  • Check the water separator. Most diesel vehicles feature a water separator as standard. It’s easy to keep an eye on the separator in between services to ensure that it’s not collecting excessive amounts of water.
  • Inspect the fuel in the tanks. The simplest way to check for water in your diesel is to open up the fuel tanks and take a look. Water contamination causes microbes and algae to grow in the tank. These contaminants are visible and they produce a foul smell.
  • Take a sample of fuel. Check the colour of a small sample of diesel from your tank. Diesel is supposed to be a clear, amber colour (although some manufacturers dye their diesel). Diesel becomes cloudy or noticeably darker when there’s excessive amounts of water in the system.
  • Use water testing chemicals. Professional diesel mechanics often use specialty products that detect the presence of water in fuel. These tests react with water to give your mechanic a definite indicator that the fuel is contaminated.

If you’re experiencing the symptoms of contaminated fuel or if you notice issues when performing the checks we listed above, it’s time to talk to your mechanic. Water in your diesel tanks can rapidly turn from a minor problem to major destruction, and seeking expert help is the best way to avoid costly repair bills!

Notes of Interest

● The NHRA Nevada Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the penultimate race on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series’ 22-race schedule and it is the fifth round in the six-race Countdown to the Championship. Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) drivers Leah Pruett (Top Fuel) and Matt Hagan (Funny Car) are both in the Countdown, with 2022 marking Pruett’s sixth appearance in the NHRA postseason and Hagan’s 11th.

● Pruett is 11th in the Top Fuel standings heading into Las Vegas, 243 points behind championship leader Justin Ashley. Hagan is third in the Funny Car standings, 78 points behind leader Robert Hight. Pruett’s best career points finish is fourth, earned three times (2018, 2019 and 2020). Hagan is a three-time champion (2011, 2014 and 2020).

● Dodge Power Brokers and Direct Connection return to Pruett’s Top Fuel dragster and Hagan’s Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car this weekend at Las Vegas. The Dodge Power Brokers program serves as the exclusive source for Direct Connection, Dodge’s factory-backed performance parts program, which is equipped with staff trained to deliver a performance-focused customer service experience.

● Pruett and Hagan competed at Las Vegas earlier this year (April 1-3) during the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. Pruett secured the No. 3 qualifying position and advanced to Round 2 on Sunday. Hagan secured the No. 4 qualifying position and advanced to the Finals on Sunday, where his run of 3.924 ET at 324.44 mph fell short of Ron Capps’s race-winning run of 3.914 ET at 331.20 mph.

● The NHRA Nevada Nationals will be Pruett’s 192nd career Top Fuel start. It’ll be her 15th overall start at Las Vegas and her ninth in the NHRA Nevada Nationals. For Hagan, the NHRA Nevada Nationals will be his 314th career Funny Car start. It’ll be his 27th overall start at Las Vegas and his 14th in the NHRA Nevada Nationals.

● Pruett earned the No. 1 qualifier at the 2019 NHRA Nevada Nationals with an ET of 3.654 seconds at 330.47 mph, which set a new track record. She is seeking her first Top Fuel victory at Las Vegas, with her best result coming in the 2018 NHRA Nevada Nationals when she finished runner-up to event winner Steve Torrence. Pruett, however, has proven victorious at Las Vegas. She won the Pro Mod title in the 2011 NHRA Nevada Nationals.

● Hagan has three career wins at the NHRA Nevada Nationals (2017, 2019 and 2020). For his first victory in 2017, Hagan ran a 3.942 ET at 329.42 mph to defeat Courtney Force (4.020 ET at 320.00 mph). In 2019, Hagan ran a 3.876 ET at 331.36 mph to defeat Jonnie Lindberg (3.945 ET at 321.12 mph). And in 2020, Hagan clocked a 3.914 ET at 326.40 mph to defeat Ron Capps (4.463 ET at 173.70 mph).

● Hagan has two No. 1 qualifiers at the NRHA Nevada Nationals, which came in 2009 (4.030 ET at 313.88 mph) and 2014 (3.983 ET at 322.42 mph).

● After the NHRA Nevada Nationals are over, Pruett will return to Las Vegas on Thursday, Nov. 3 and head to Nellis Air Force Base to fly with the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds perform for people all around the world to display the pride, precision and professionalism the U.S. Air Force represents. Through air shows and flyovers, they aim to excite and inspire. In addition to showcasing the elite skills all pilots must possess, the Thunderbirds demonstrate the incredible capabilities of the Air Force’s premier multi-role fighter jet, the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Leah Pruett, Driver of the Dodge Power Brokers Top Fuel Dragster

In the series’ last event at Dallas, you and your team made significant improvements to your dragster, and you continue to be competitive each time you hit the track. What’s your confidence level heading into Las Vegas?

“It’s the type of confidence that’s stronger than just knowing that we can do it and more so the confidence of knowing we’ve finally unlocked the initial findings of what it takes to be throw-down fast. I’m looking forward to bringing our Dodge Power Brokers dragster to Las Vegas and giving it all we have.”

You’ll be testing at Las Vegas after the NHRA Nevada Nationals. How valuable will that track day be as you start to prepare for 2023?

“This test day will most likely be as valuable as the first time we hit the track, as this particular test session will have implications of what wholesale changes we move forward with next year. Our potential changes require strategy and time, which is why we have to start now and not wait for the standard pre-season test.”

Following the NHRA Nevada Nationals, you’ll get the unique opportunity to fly with the Thunderbirds. What are your expectations?

“I often get asked what it feels like to drive a Top Fuel dragster and whether we pass out from the g-forces. I always hit them back with an explanation of our sudden g-swings compared to the sustained g-forces that the Thunderbirds pilots experience. I look forward to not only experiencing the physical rush of the ride, but being in the presence of the Air Force servicemen and women while learning about their skills and how they’re used to keep America safe. I’m extremely appreciative of this opportunity, as it’s one I’m getting ready to cherish for my entire life. I’m also doing everything that’s recommended to prevent getting sick up there and seeing how long I can sustain eight to nine g-forces before experiencing tunnel vision.”

Matt Hagan, Driver of the Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car

You’ve won the NHRA Nevada Nationals three times in the last five years. What makes you so successful in this event?

“Just like we’ve done well in races at the beginning of the season, I think we always do well in races at the end of the season. It’s favorable conditions as far as what Dickie (Venables, crew chief) is comfortable with and being able to push hard. Our Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car is making a lot of power and as those tracks cool down, our car is able to maintain that power. Here at the end of the year, these obviously count a lot. We’re 78 points out and have a lot of ground to make up. (Robert) Hight and (Ron) Capps have to have two bad races and we have to have two good races. We’re going to go into Las Vegas and work hard and do our best to race our racecar.”

By advancing to the finals at Dallas, you were able to chip away at the gap to Funny Car leader Robert Hight. With only 78 points separating you and him, what is your outlook heading into Las Vegas?

“Being 78 points back, we have to have two good races. We kind of backed ourselves into a corner and have to come out swinging and win these next two races to have a shot at the championship. We have to be aggressive. We still have a shot at this, but things have to line up a bit. We have to scoop up those little points and turn win lights on.”

You’ll be testing at Las Vegas after the NHRA Nevada Nationals. How valuable will that track day be as you start to prepare for 2023?

“Testing will be very valuable for next year. We won’t be making wholesale changes for the last race, but it’ll allow us the opportunity to gear up for the following season. As a driver, I always learn something by being in the car, and it’ll help the team by also learning some things for next year.”
