RCR Event Preview – Kansas Speedway

Richard Childress Racing at Kansas Speedway … In 94 NASCAR Cup Series starts at Kansas Speedway, Richard Childress Racing has one win with Kevin Harvick in 2013 along with five top-five and 26 top-10 finishes. The victory was Harvick’s first at Kansas and it came in dominating fashion with Harvick winning the pole and leading the most laps in the race. In 2021, Austin Dillon claimed a pair of 10th-place finishes at Kansas while Tyler Reddick scored a seventh-place finish in the spring event at the 1.5-mile speedway.

Back in the Playoffs … Richard Childress Racing enters Kansas with three victories in NASCAR’s elite Cup Series during the 2022 season. The Welcome, N.C., based company has two entries in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs for the first time since 2017 (Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman).

Xfinity Series Stats at Kansas … RCR has one NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at Kansas: Kevin Harvick in 2006. AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:

How is Kansas unique compared to some of the other 1.5-mile tracks?

“Kansas Speedway has done a really good job with their banking. There’s a line right up by the fence that has a little extra grip. There’s an angle up there that I don’t think many tracks have figured out yet, but Kansas got it right. You can run from top to bottom there. The bottom groove is the preferred groove at the beginning, but it becomes too tight to try and run around there in turns one and two sometimes depending on what the balance of your race car is. I’ve enjoyed that track a lot ever since they repaved it. I wish every track could do as good as a job as Kansas has with repaves.”

Can this team win the trophy from where it starts in the NASCAR Playoffs?

“Why not? I’m confident at the tracks in the playoffs. RCR has shown speed at every type of track with Tyler Reddick winning the road courses, and the No. 3 team winning the speedway. At Martinsville Speedway, I finished third but was probably the second-best car there, and we probably should have won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I was really close there. I’m happy to be in this spot and I think we’re the underdog. Some people are already putting us out, which is just fine with me because it takes pressure off and we’ll go have fun and try to upset some of these guys. We’re taking it as survive and advance mode from here on out.”

Is there any problem flipping the switch for the NASCAR Playoffs?

“If anything, I’ve learned with 15 winners that you need to stay aggressive. I talked to the guys about it the other day. Some of the strategy calls we made over the last couple of weeks we probably wouldn’t have done it if we were racing for points. We maximize more points by being aggressive on strategy and putting ourselves in better position. So, I don’t think a whole lot is going to change. We’ll monitor where everybody is running during the race and go from there. I believe we should stay on the same strategy path that we’ve been on.”

How does your previous NASCAR Playoffs experience help you?

“Just knowing how every position matters. Looking back at a couple of times when you’re outside looking in and it came down to a point or two points, knowing that you have to get it at all cost.”

What are your thoughts entering Kansas this weekend?

“I like Kansas Speedway a lot. When we were at Kansas in the spring, we were really fast and just had some weird stuff happen to us. We’re just going to go in there and do our job and hopefully it’s a good day. I would love to be up front and running for the win. We were good enough to do that the last time we were there. We were just close enough to wide open there around the top where the bottom and middle weren’t that great but I think the gains that everyone has been making on these cars might open up the middle and bottom some more. That should be exciting and that should be a good thing.”

You enter Kansas Speedway 23 points above the cutline and after Darlington Raceway, a minimum of 10 drivers will advance to the next round based on points. Does that change your approach entering this weekend?

“No, not for me. I mean, we can’t let up. I was adamant about how I was going to approach the Playoffs this year and it was going to be one race at a time. We’re going to treat it like we’ve been treating all the races this season. We’re going to go out and do our job to the best of our ability and make the most of it. Certainly, if we’re having a tough day and we’re fighting really hard for one spot with somebody who doesn’t want to give it up I think at that point you’ve got to be smart. But for how we approach race weekend and the race, nothing changes. We just keep doing what we’ve been doing all year long. We’ve had good speed and a lot of things have been really close for us.”

This Week’s Whelen Engineering Chevrolet Camaro SS at Kansas Speedway … Sheldon Creed will head to Kansas Speedway this weekend for the first time of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career. Creed has made five starts at the track in the NASCAR Truck Series, tallying one top five, two top 10s and 132 laps led. Creed finished runner-up in the Fall Kansas race in 2020, his best finish at the track. Creed is coming off an incredibly strong run last weekend at Darlington Raceway. He led 47 laps en route to a runner-up finish after a hard-fought battle in the final laps. Creed is currently 13th in the Playoff standings, the first driver below the cutline. There are two more races left for Creed to punch his ticket to the post-season.

You had a really strong showing at Darlington Raceway last weekend. Will that momentum help you at Kansas Speedway this weekend?

“Last weekend’s race was what our team needed. We stayed in that thing the entire day, we led laps, we showed how strong our team is and we brought a really fast racecar. I wish I got the win but to still finish second after a all the craziness in the final laps is an accomplishment. We can take that momentum with us this weekend to Kansas, another track that I really enjoy. We’ve been preparing and are ready to do exactly what we did at Darlington but finish one spot better. This will be my first start at Kansas in an Xfinity car but I feel confident in myself and the cars my team brings to the track. Practice and qualifying will be important this weekend because we want to start up front and stay there and see how our car stacks up.”

This Week’s United Rentals Chevrolet Camaro SS at Kansas Speedway … Austin Hill will make his second career NASCAR Xfinity Series start at Kansas Speedway, his first as a full-time driver in the series with RCR. He made his first start at the track in 2020 and started 29th and finished fifth. Hill has a lot of experience at the track from his time competing in the NASCAR Truck Series. He made a total of six starts in his Truck Series career and had one win (2020), four top fives and five top 10s. He led total of 98 laps in those starts and had an average finish of 4.8. Hill grabbed his 15th top-10 finish of his rookie season last weekend at Darlington Raceway. He is currently holding onto sixth-place in the Playoff standings with only two more races before the post-season begins.

“Yeah, I really like Kansas Speedway. I enjoyed going there in the Trucks and finished fifth in my first NASCAR Xfinity Series start there. Our team had a few rough finishes and bounced back with a top-10 finish at Darlington last week. With that momentum and heading to a track that I feel really comfortable at, I think it will be a good weekend for us. I’m looking forward to practice and qualifying and looking at the speed in our car. Cup raced at Kansas earlier this season, but the Xfinity Series didn’t so I’m definitely going to do my research and see how the track ran and what changed so I’m ready. We’ve got two more races until the Playoffs begin and we want to take advantage of all the points we can and get another win.”

Drivers

Drivers have always been the most visible face of motorsports. Drivers can work on road circuits, off-road courses, or short oval tracks. There are many variations of drivers that can take part in motorsports careers, these include drag racers. There are also different types of cars that drivers can use. 

Some of the most popular models of vehicles that drivers can partake in include stock cars, open-wheel cars, sports cars, and trucks. Each of these vehicles has different requirements to use. Stock cars are the most common type of vehicle that is raced, with open-wheel cars and sports cars being much less common.

Mechanics

Mechanics are the people who get their hands dirty building the vehicles that are raced. This can be a very challenging job, as you have to work quickly to get the vehicle built in time for the race. Mechanics also have to operate in a very precise manner, and they need to be very thorough in what they do. 

This is vital and ensures the safety of both the driver and competitors on the track. Mechanics often have to work long hours and may have to travel to races, so this can be a very demanding career that requires a lot of physical and mental effort.

Team Owners

They represent the group that builds the vehicle that is racing. As the owners, they usually have to find the money needed to start it on their own. Many of the owners of racing teams in the past ended up losing a lot of money. Races were very risky, and only a few participants ended up making money. 

Team owners find sponsors to fund their organization, and get mechanics to build their vehicles and drivers to race in it. They also have the responsibility of dealing with the risk of injuries and losing money during events.

Sponsors

Sponsors are people or companies that fund a team in exchange for having their name or logo displayed on the vehicle. One of the most common types of racing sponsorship is putting a name or logo on a team’s racing uniforms. This is mostly done for stock car racing, open-wheel racing, and even short-track racing. 

People that wanted to become sponsors back then often needed to be wealthy individuals. This is because the sponsor usually had to give a large amount of money to the team owner. 

This was required because the team owner needed to pay to have the vehicle built. In addition to funding the construction of the vehicle, the sponsor had to cover most expenses such as the team member’s salaries and traveling.

Photographers

Individuals that wanted to become photographers often made their living at racing events in those years. This was because there was no television and very few photographs of races were published in newspapers. Photographers would often take pictures of the vehicles, the drivers, and the team owners. 

They had to pay to attend the events, and they were often not paid very much. This is because most cameramen were not working directly for newspaper agencies which meant that the photographs taken were not seen by very many people.

Medical personnel

There were very few doctors and nurses then, medical personnel were used to treat injured drivers and mechanics. Medical personnel often had to cut the clothing off of drivers so that they could examine their injuries and give them medical treatment. As the races grew more popular, many racetrack owners hired nurses to take care of medical needs at the track. 

These nurses had to be very tough and were often called “pit nurses.” They had to work long hours and were often exposed to injuries and death. These professionals were often the first people to recognize a medical emergency and had to know how to respond effectively.

“I’m excited to be returning to Kansas this week, this track is a fun place with a lot of different grooves, which allows the drivers to have a lot of options getting going on restarts and on long runs. We’re looking to have a strong finish there with our No. 42 Sunseeker Resorts Chevrolet.”

Erik Jones, No. 43 FOCUSfactor Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

  • Jones at Kansas Speedway: Following their win at Darlington Raceway last weekend, Erik Jones and the No. 43 FOCUSfactor Chevrolet team now head to Kansas Speedway where Jones will make his 13th-career Cup Series start at the 1.5-mile track. In his previous 12 starts at the track, Jones has three top-five finishes, five top-10 finishes and a career-best finish of third in 2019.

In addition to his Cup Series starts, Jones has two starts at the track in the Xfinity Series. Both races ended with 15th-place finishes after fuel milage played a role in the finish of the races. In both starts Jones was contending for the win and leading laps, including leading 186 of 200 laps in the 2017 event.

With one start in the Truck Series, Jones led 151 of 167 laps before fuel milage caused the team to finish the race in the 11th position, one lap down.

  • First-Career Cup Series Start: Kansas Speedway will always be a special place for Erik Jones. In 2015, while competing full-time in the NASCAR Truck Series, Jones made his Cup Series debut filling in for the injured Kyle Busch. Starting the race from the 12th position, Jones was able to race his way in to the top 10 and lead one lap before a rookie mistake late in the race caused the No. 18 car to make contact with the outside wall. With too much damage to continue, Jones was credited with a 40th-place finish.
  • Darlington Recap: Making his 10th-career Cup Series start at Darlington Raceway, Jones started the 2022 Southern 500 from the 15th position and led the final 23 laps to earn his first win of the season. With a fast car and strong pit stops all race, Jones earned his second Southern 500.

TAKE US THROUGH YOUR THOUGHTS GOING INTO THE WEEKEND AT KANSAS SPEEDWAY AND THE SECOND RACE OF THE PLAYOFFS ROUND OF 16.

“Yeah, Darlington (Raceway) was fine for our team.. it wasn’t a great finish, but we had speed. So as long as that keeps happening, we’ll be OK.”

YOU FINISHED TOP-10 AT KANSAS IN THE SPRING. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE THIS TIME TO JUST GAIN A FEW SPOTS THERE AND FIND YOURSELF IN VICTORY LANE?

“The sport is evolving this year; really I’d say across the board more than I’ve ever seen, for sure. The race cars are just evolving. We got them basically on pallets over the off season. We started assembling them; we started testing them and we started racing them in February. We’ve been on this continuous learning curve that this sport always goes through, but it’s just steeper. We just started with cars that we’ve never raced before; we’ve never wrecked before and we’ve never pushed them to the limits before. So the teams are constantly evolving and finding what geometry and setups work better and keep pushing the limits.

I think Kansas (Speedway) is going to feel similar; the track has only aged a few months and it’s going to be warmer, but it’s not going to be too different from the spring. I think just like then, when we were contending within the top-five, I think we’ll have that same speed again.”

TALK ABOUT JUST RACING, IN GENERAL, AT KANSAS SPEEDWAY WITH THIS CAR. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO WELL?

“With the progressive banking, we continue to move up. I don’t know exactly what the weather is going to be like Sunday. There are some chances of some stuff we don’t like to talk about and some cooler air. But definitely practice on Saturday will be just using that top lane. We’ve seen that for quite a few years now. These cars like momentum. They like more racetrack to turn on, so they want the widest corner possible. If the guy in front of you is similar in speed and he’s running your line up top, it’s not great. But the great thing about Kansas (Speedway) is that you can make the bottom work if you’re better. And if you’re not, I feel like I’ll be patient and I just have to wait for the next opportunity. You’re not stuck in line, but you don’t want to give the guy behind you momentum and clean air. So it’s a mix of offense and defense.”

WINNING IS OBVIOUSLY IMPORTANT IN THE PLAYOFFS.. IT’S YOU’RE GUARANTEED CHANCE INTO THE NEXT ROUND. TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF POINTS, ESPECIALLY WHERE WE ARE NOW IN THIS ROUND WHEN WE HAVE TWO RACES LEFT.

“Winning solves everything. Running good will give you the most points.

So yeah, there’s ultimately 16 cars – including me – that will be the test of if we score enough points or not. If you win, you’re automatically locked in. It all just pays to run well. The difference for us – from last year to this year – has been eye-opening in the amount of points we can earn. It’s amazing.”

DO YOU FEEL LIKE KANSAS SPEEDWAY IS A PLACE THAT YOU CAN CAPITALIZE THIS WEEKEND?

“Yeah, for sure. It’s pretty wild that our wins have not come on 1.5-mile tracks because I feel like those have been our strongest races. I don’t know how we’ll qualify.. we’re working on that. But the main thing is that we’re fast throughout the race for 400 miles.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE ANNOUCEMENT TODAY WITH NORTH WILKESBORO HOSTING THE ALL-STAR RACE NEXT YEAR?

“I love it. I never thought I would see the day. I’ve driven by the track, but I’ve never stopped and never seen it. I’ve watched a lot of old videos over the years of races there and I’ve done some iRacing on it.

I do think there is a reason why they left it, right? There’s a reason they stopped racing there. But I don’t know, we’ll go back and experience it. It’s going to be cool. Hopefully we’re locked-in.”

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NORTH WILKESBORO OR HAVE YOU WATCHED OR LEARNED ABOUT IT?

“I’d be making stuff up if I said I did. Like I said, I’ve iRaced and watched some old videos when I can’t sleep, but that’s about it.

HOW ARE YOU LOOKING AT WHAT CAME OUT OF DARLINGTON? WHAT DID YOU MAKE OF EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED.. ALL THE PLAYOFF CONTENDERS THAT HAD ISSUES AND YOUR RACE?

“Yeah, it’s crazy. We prepare all year and then a lot of us did have issues. I expected it.. Obviously I don’t expect for the No. 1 car to have issues. But it was said in our pre-race meeting, teams are going to take themselves out… let’s just not do that. Not that the No. 99 or us had the race and the finish that we wanted, but we survived and we didn’t hurt ourselves, so far. Time will tell if the points lost ultimately account for anything. But the only reason that we’ll look back on Darlington (Raceway) and say it cost us anything is if we have more issues. As long as we just have clean races, we’ll be fine. We have plenty of speed.”

HOW DO YOU LOOK AT KANSAS, ITSELF, THEN?

“I can’t wait.. the hotter the better. I hope the wet stuff and cooler weather doesn’t come in until Monday and it stays nice and warm. Just being able to move around on the track. Even though everybody wants the top, if you’re car is better, you can move down the hill and pass. Restarts, you have a lot of options. We don’t have to spray anything on the track to make it good. We don’t have to do anything.. we can just go race and in today’s world, that’s nice to just be able to naturally race on a racetrack.”

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT THE DEAL WITH THE PIN HOLES AND THE DEBRIS THAT GOT CAUGHT UP IN THERE LAST WEEKEND?

“I don’t know.. that would be a question for somebody on the team way smarter than me. I don’t think so, but I don’t want to say for sure. I don’t think we could have done anything to prevent that.”

THE TIRES ARE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN BEFORE WITH THE NEW CONSTRUCTION THEY DEBUTED IN POCONO OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. DO YOU HAVE ANY SENSE IF THAT WILL CHANGE THINGS VERY MUCH FOR THIS WEEKEND?

“Well, first of all, I’m thankful that they have. I’m glad that it’s been awhile since we’ve been blowing left-rear tires like we were at the beginning of the year, so that’s good. There are still things that I do, we do, to hopefully guard ourselves as much as we can against blowing left rear tires. I know there’s going to be less stagger. So like Michigan (International Speedway), the cars are going to be tighter if you just go back with the same setup. You would have less stagger in the tires than you would in the spring. So that will be something to work through and hopefully the GM/Chevrolet group have that balance figured out for us.”

DO YOU HAVE A TARGETED POINTS CUSHION THAT YOU’D LIKE TO HAVE GOING INTO BRISTOL?

“I want to go get 60-points this weekend (laughs). There’s nothing comfortable about racing in the Cup Series and I like it that way.”

YOU’RE EIGHTH IN THE PLAYOFF STANDINGS HEADING INTO KANSAS.. KIND OF MID-PACK. HOW DO YOU DEFINE WHERE YOU’RE AT? OBVIOUSLY, NOT ENOUGH AND YOU’D LIKE TO WIN TO ADVANCE ON. BUT HOW DO YOU LOOK AT WHERE YOU’RE AT?

“Even with the issues at Darlington (Raceway), we cleared two more points above the cutline. Yeah, a lot of guys passed us, but we actually distanced ourselves, only by two, but we’re up to 15-points ahead. If we do that again for a few more weeks and we add two points to the cutline, then we’re fine and we move on.

Ultimately, that’s what I’m looking for, right? Yeah, I want to go win, but I really just want good races. I don’t want to be in the news for the obvious reasons earlier in the year. But right now, for points-wise, if I’m not in the news, then that means that I’m just solidly scoring points and we’ll move. That’s all that’s on my plan right now.”

WHEN YOU WERE ENTERING THE PLAYOFFS, YOU SAID IT WAS SORT OF SURREAL. WHAT DID YOU MAKE OF HOW IT FELT TO BE A PLAYOFF DRIVER AT DARLINGTON WITH EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED?

“The whole week was really normal. I was almost scared that it was so normal that it was going to end up not being. And to an extent, that did happen. On Sunday, I had butterflies. I had nerves. It was a late race and I didn’t really leave for the track until like 2 p.m. I hung around with the family and just killed time. I think that’s going to bring in some nerves a bit, but it was weighing on me that my actions tonight could forever dictate the outcome of what we’ve worked to accomplish. Fortunately, we survived.. we put a few points on them and lived to fight through Kansas.”

NOW THAT YOU’VE BEEN THROUGH PLAYOFF RACE ONE, HOW DO YOU ENTER KANSAS? MAYBE MORE AGGRESSIVE, MAYBE MORE RELAXED, NO BUTTERFLIES.. WILL IT BE DIFFERENT YOU THINK?

“I don’t know. For me, I think that’s what’s so cool about all of this.. is that I’m experiencing it. I expect to feel similar at Kansas. They give out just as many points at Kansas as they did at Darlington. Running right up against the fence for 400 miles is no easy feat. I’m not expecting Kansas to be easy. I’m not expecting it to be calm. We can have issues; we can make mistakes. What was so great about Darlington – like throughout the second half of the race – was how calm we all stayed. We talked through the problem; we got it fixed, we cleaned up the pins and we finished the race. We got three of our four laps back. Half of a Southern 500 to make up three laps on the field, that’s the beginnings of a storybook ending if we get one more caution.”

Hocevar Makes Dirt Late Model Debut at Eldora Speedway

ROSSBURG, Ohio (Sept. 8, 2022) – Niece Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar made his dirt late model debut at Eldora Speedway on Wednesday night, with an 11th-place finish in the ‘Chasing the Dream’ Feature #3. The 19-year-old battled his way from the tail end of the field in the No. 42 Andy’s Frozen Custard dirt late model after sustaining right rear damage on the initial start of the 20-lap feature.

Fulltime TA2 Racer Connor Mosack Seeks Repeat Victory at Iconic New York Circuit as

He’s Joined by Chris Liesfeld, Dillon Machavern and Justin Marks for 10th TA2 Round of 2022

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2022) – Connor Mosack returns to the scene of his first career TA2 victory in the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli as he and the four-car TeamSLR contingent head to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International for this weekend’s Franklin Road Apparel Classic at the iconic 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course.

Mosack scored his victory in the second race of last September’s Saturday-Sunday TA2 doubleheader at Watkins Glen. He started and finished fourth on Saturday, but by laying down the second-fastest lap of the race, he earned a front-row starting spot for the Sunday race alongside polesitter and defending TA2 champion Rafa Matos. By the time the field reached turn two on Sunday, Mosack had cleared Matos. The 23-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, went on to hold the lead for all 30 laps, taking the checkered flag by .272 of a second ahead of runner-up Tyler Kicera.

Mosack is back at The Glen as part of a four-car armada from TeamSLR, the family-owned organization run by Scott Lagasse Sr., and Scott Lagasse Jr. Joining Mosack in the 10th race of the 2022 TA2 season is Chris Liesfeld, back for his third outing with the team this season, along with Dillon Machavern and Justin Marks, both of whom are returning to TeamSLR for the second time.

Mosack arrives at The Glen a solid third in the driver standings and atop the leaderboard for the Peter Gregg Foundation Young Gun Award with three races remaining. The driver of the No. 28 Open Eyes/Nacarato Truck Centers/Nic Tailor Custom Fit Underwear Ford Mustang is coming off a strong second-place finish in the series’ most recent race Aug. 6 on the downtown streets of Nashville, Tennessee, where Mosack scored his seventh career TA2 podium and third of the season. He brings that momentum and some added experience at The Glen to this weekend’s event, as Mosack competed in both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and ARCA Menards Series races at Watkins Glen three weeks ago. On Aug. 19 in the ARCA race, Mosack was battling for third with three laps to go when he was taken out by another competitor. On Aug. 20 in the Xfinity Series race, Mosack drove from his 13th-place starting spot in the 38-driver field and was battling for a spot among the top-five in the closing laps before having to pit for a shredded tire.

Machavern, the 27-year-old from Charlotte, Vermont, will be behind the wheel of the No. 17 UniFirst/M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro for the first time since this year’s season-opener at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway, where he qualified eighth and powered his way into the top-five before mechanical gremlins ruined his bid. This weekend marks his milestone 50th career TA2 start since first racing in the series in 2015. Machavern relishes this weekend’s opportunity to race a TA2 car at Watkins Glen, where he has scored multiple victories during his career, including a TA2 win in 2016, and the prestigious Sahlen’s Six-Hour race with powerhouse GTD-class team of Turner Motorsports in 2018. He’ has also scored back-to-back IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge victories at The Glen the past two seasons with co-driver Bill Auberlen. Machavern contested the full TA2 schedule three times in his career with a best result of second in the 2019 championship.

Liesfeld, the 47-year-old who calls Richmond, Virginia, home, is ready for his third race of the season behind the wheel of the No. 96 Fields Racing/M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro. Liesfeld owns and operates Fields Racing, which has competed in an array of racing disciplines over the years, including Stock Car Championship Series, Spec Miata, SCCA Pro and Trans Am. Liesfeld is making his second TA2 appearance in a row after his 19th-place finish in Nashville last month. His first race this season was Memorial Day weekend at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut.

Marks, the 41-year-old from Rocklin, California, is a veteran NASCAR and sportscar racer in his second year as owner of Trackhouse Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, whose drivers Daniel Suárez and Ross Chastain each have scored breakthrough victories this season and are currently competing in the NASCAR Playoffs. Marks will be making his third career TA2 start and first at The Glen this weekend, but he is certainly no stranger to the facility. He co-drove a Meyer-Shank Racing GT Daytona-class entry to victory in the 2019 Sahlen’s Six-Hour race and scored another podium in the endurance classic in 2005 among his 10 sportscar outings at the track. He drove his TeamSLR entry to a fourth-place finish from the sixth starting position in the August 2021 Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, and returned to TeamSLR for this year’s July 3 race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, where he charged to a seventh-place finish from the 28th starting position after battling a mechanical issue in practice and qualifying.

A year ago this month, you scored your first career TA2 win at Watkins Glen. How special was that for you?

“Yeah, it’s definitely special in that Watkins Glen is where we got our first TA2 win. It was a pretty solid weekend all around. We qualified fourth for the Saturday race and pretty much stayed there to the end. And things really went our way on Sunday and we were fortunate enough to capitalize on it. We’re still looking for our first win of this season and we’re hoping we can get it done. We’ve been strong pretty much everywhere we’ve been this year but just haven’t had everything go right on any given weekend, which is what it takes to win in this series, it’s so competitive. Watkins Glen is a place where if we don’t qualify on the pole, we can certainly move our way to the front. And if we do qualify on the pole, I feel it’s a place where I know what needs to be done to defend.”

Watkins Glen has to be fresh on your mind after your double-duty weekend there Aug. 19-20 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and ARCA Menards Series. How do you feel that will benefit you this weekend?

“I think every bit of time on the track helps. It’ll be good to go back there in the TA2 car after racing there in the bigger, heavier stock cars. Those two races didn’t turn out quite like we had hoped for various reasons. In the ARCA race, we were racing for third at the end and just got put off the track and then had to pit for a shredded tire. We had an early issue in the Xfinity race that put us back, but we were able to race our way back up to 15th, so that gave us some good momentum to finish the weekend.”

Those two races took place on the abbreviated, seven-turn Watkins Glen circuit. What will it be like to adjust to the traditional 11-turn layout when you go back for the Trans Am race?

“It’s the more traditional Watkins Glen layout this weekend, for sure, and more fitting for the TA2 cars that are made for road racing. The trickiest part of the track is going up the hill through the esses, and through the bus stop, no matter which circuit they’re using. Running the long course this time, my first priority when we start testing and practice will be getting it just right through (turns) six, seven, eight and nine. When your car is right, it’s a track that flows really well and there are places to make up ground.”

Dillon Machavern, driver No. 17 UniFirst/M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro:

You’re back with TeamSLR for the first time since the TA2 season opener in March at Sebring. What keeps you coming back to this series?

“I want to stay involved for a few races to keep the skills sharp because there’s really nothing like a Trans Am car anymore in road racing, other than hopping into a NASCAR car. There’s nothing quite as raw as a TA2 car with no electronics, minimal driver aids. It’s just the driver and the car and nothing else, and I enjoy that. It’s nice to go back to the roots a little bit. It’s just fun. You have to be on it the whole time. The technology in the more modern cars can mask mistakes. In the TA2 car, you don’t have the opportunity to make those mistakes, so it’s really fun to keep those skills sharp.”

What is it like racing a TA2 car at Watkins Glen compared to the several IMSA-class sportscars you’ve raced there during your career?

“I’m proud to say we had a TA2 win there way back in the day. A lot of it is about how you attack the braking zones. In a more sophisticated car with ABS, you just hit the pedal as hard as you can when you come up to the brake zone and just trail out of it to help turn the car. In a TA2 car, you have to roll into the brake hard to slow it down, but you also have to roll out of the brake in a little different fashion to get around the corner because you don’t have that support of the ABS to keep you from locking. It’s all seat-of-the-pants. Obviously, turn one is a big one, because it leads you all the way up through the esses, so getting off turn one is super important. But being an old-school, flowy track, you’ve got to be on it everywhere because there’s nowhere to rest. You’ve got to be up on the wheel the entire lap to be competitive.”

How do you like racing at Watkins Glen, in general?

“I tend to really enjoy the old-school tracks that are designed around the topography more so than the tracks nowadays that are very technical and designed just on a piece of paper. I like the tracks like Watkins Glen, VIR and Road America that are old-school, bad-ass, fast tracks. You can get into a flow, but you also have to hold on because things come up on you pretty quickly. There’s also a lot of passing opportunities at those tracks. I just like the tracks where you can really let the cars run. You can carry a lot of speed and have hard braking zones where you can pass. That’s what I really enjoy about it.”

Chris Liesfeld, driver No. 96 Fields Racing/M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro:

This weekend’s race at Watkins Glen will be your first of any kind at the track. Talk about that.

“I’m certainly excited about it. I’ve never been there before. It’s always fun going to a new track. It’s definitely going to be night-and-day different from my last race at Nashville. It’s a little more high-speed corners, nice elevation change, and it’s the type of racing I prefer – I like that style of track. I’m excited, ready to do it. Watkins Glen has been on my bucket list of tracks to run for a long time.”

How have you prepared for your first career race at The Glen?

“I’ve been working a little bit on the sim – a little bit, not as much as I’d have liked to. But what I’ve done I feel will be enough. It’s gotten me pretty familiar with the layout of the track. And I think I’ve prepared well enough and I think I know the track well enough to get out there and try to get up to speed pretty quickly. This type of track is something I prefer over the ones with tight corners and the point-and-shoot style of racing. The corners are more high-speed and sweeping. There are a couple of tighter corners. And everybody talks about the bus stop, which is a feature of Watkins Glen, like ‘Oak Tree’ at VIR.”

You’re fresh off the previous TA2 round at Nashville, albeit four weekends ago. Will that help you get up to speed more quickly this weekend at The Glen?

“When you see that I finished 19th at Nashville, it may not look like the most impressive result, but considering I came from 39th on the grid, I feel like it gives me some momentum for this weekend, for sure. We had an issue in qualifying that forced us to abort the session. But, obviously, everything was working well on raceday and we were able to pick up all those spots, which on a temporary street course is not an easy thing to do, as everyone knows. I’m glad to have another chance to get back to it at a track like Watkins Glen.”

Justin Marks, driver No. 99 M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro:

Like Road America, where you last raced with TeamSLR on July 4 weekend, you’ve logged a lot of laps and have enjoyed success in your career at Watkins Glen. What do you like about it?

“I love this track because it’s a driver’s track. There are a lot of passing opportunities and the track has a really nice flow. It’s truly a classic American road-racing circuit.”

What would you say are the biggest challenges of making your way around Watkins Glen?

“I’d say one of the biggest challenges is getting the car to work well everywhere. It has high-speed, high-risk corners, but it also has very technical, slower sections, so it places a premium on a well-balanced racecar.”

You rallied from far back in the field for a strong, seventh-place finish at Road America in July. Talk about that.

“We struggled with an issue with the car in qualifying that the team did a great job of diagnosing and fixing before the race. We had to start back in 29th, but the car was great in the race, and I just had to manage risk and let the race come back to us a bit, and it turned out well.”

You’re also driving in the Sunday Trans Am race at Watkins Glen this weekend. Safe to say you’re looking forward to pulling double duty?

“I just love to drive racecars, so if I’m going to spend four days away from home at a racetrack, I want to be on track as much as possible. I think the added track time will just help the process of really understanding what it’s going to take to be successful and, hopefully, contend to win both races.”

Point leader Will Power and teammates Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin are among five drivers mathematically eligible to win the Astor Cup

DETROIT (Sept. 8, 2022) – As the 2022 NTT INDYCAR Series (NICS) season roars to a close at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (WTLS) on Sunday, three Team Chevy drivers are among the five that are mathematically eligible to win the INDYCAR Championship and take home the Astor Cup.

Will Power, No.12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet, heads to the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey season finale as the points leader with 523 points. Power led the standings twice earlier in the season and retook the top spot after Race 13 (Indianapolis road course-July 30). He has one win, four poles and 11 top-five finishes (the latter two are most in INDYCAR this year).

Teammate Josef Newgarden, No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, is tied for second, 20 points down to Power, and holds the tiebreaker with five wins (most in INDYCAR this year). He also has one pole and seven top-five finishes.

Sitting fifth is Scott McLaughlin, No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet, fresh off his convincing win at Portland and the announcement of a contract extension. He is 41 points behind Power and has recorded three wins, three poles and eight top-five finishes.

Scott Dixon (Honda) is tied with Newgarden, and Marcus Ericsson (Honda) is fourth in the standings.

A total of 54 points is available Sunday: 50 points for the race win, one point each for pole position and leading one lap, plus two points for leading the most laps in the 95-lap race around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course.

“To have five drivers vying for the championship, three of which are Chevy-powered, going into the final race of the INDYCAR season is remarkable,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet program manager for the NTT INDYCAR Series. “With 11 wins in 16 races, I am extremely proud of the effort put forth by our teams, the Chevrolet engineers and Ilmor, our engine partner. We had our challenges from time to time, but everyone pulled together and moved forward. And here we are … poised for a final run for the title times three.
