Event: Race 26 of 38
Series: NASCAR Cup Series
Location: Watkins Glen International (2.45-miles)
#of Laps: 90
Time/TV/Radio: 2:00 PM ET on USA/MRN/SiriusXM channel 90

Noah Gragson Notes

Noah Gragson and the No. 4 team fly to Watkins Glen, New York for the NASCAR Cup Series annual race at Watkins Glen International. The Go Bowling at The Glen will be Gragson’s second NASCAR Cup Series start at the 2.45-mile, seven-turn road course in Upstate New York, but that doesn’t mean the 27-year-old racer from Las Vegas isn’t familiar with its undulating layout. Gragson has three NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Watkins Glen and finished among the top-10 each time, with his best result coming in his most recent drive at the track – a fourth-place finish in 2022. His first Cup race in 2024 ended with an impressive 11th place finish.

A&W Root Beer is back on the No. 4 car this weekend for their second race of the season with Noah Gragson. Established in 1919, A&W has been a pioneer in the fast-food industry. It all started when Roy W. Allen opened a roadside root beer stand in Lodi, CA. From there, Allen partnered with Frank Wright, and together they coined the name A&W, which has become synonymous with root beer ever since. Then, in 1926 A&W began franchising with a system that expanded internationally. After a whole century, A&W® Root Beer remains the most popular in its category among consumers. On August 6, visit any participating U.S. A&W Restaurant from 2–8 p.m. and get a FREE Small Root Beer Float. In return, you’ll have the chance to donate to A&W’s partners at DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and receive a collector’s mug for $10. Join A&W in raising a mug and making a difference. Visit A&W Restaurants – Locations to find the location closest to you.

“Watkins Glen is just a fun place to race – you’re constantly shifting, hitting curbs, and hauling ass,” said Gragson. “It’s a fast track with a fairly simple layout, but it takes precision to get your timing right and really maximize each corner. We had a strong run there last year – qualified inside the top 10 and ran up front most of the day before finishing 11th. That was my first Cup start at The Glen, I’m hoping to take the package from last year into this weekend’s race.”

Layne Riggs Notes

Coming off of a dominating win at the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park two weeks ago, Layne Riggs and the No. 34 team return to action this weekend at Watkins Glen International. This weekend will mark Riggs’ debut at the 2.45-mile road course in Watkins Glen, New York, and is just his third career start on a road course overall. So far this season, Riggs has earned two wins, seven top-five, and nine top-10 finishes and sits third in the Truck Series Driver Championship points standings.

With just two races left before the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoffs, Smith has already earned two wins, four top-five, and 12 top-10 finishes. After a sixth-place finish at the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, Smith remains second in the Truck Series Driver Championship points standings.

“I’ve always enjoyed racing at Watkins Glen,” said Smith. “I feel confident in myself on road courses, and Front Row Motorsports has a strong track record at these types of tracks with both Todd (Gilliland) and Zane (Smith). I believe this No. 38 team has what it takes to run up front this weekend. Even though we’re already locked into the playoffs, there’s still a lot at stake — I want to leave with a win and valuable playoff points.”

Toyota GAZOO Racing Weekly Preview 08.06.25

This Week in Motorsports: August 4 – 10, 2025

· NCS/NXS/NCTS/ARCA: Watkins Glen International – Aug. 8-10

· FORMULA DRIFT: Evergreen Speedway – Aug. 8-9

PLANO, Texas (Aug. 6, 2025) – NASCAR is back road course racing, this time at Watkins Glen International for its annual trip to Upstate New York. All three national series, plus the ARCA Menards Series, take on the 2.454-mile course layout as the postseason nears. Formula DRIFT is back in action this weekend, heading to the Pacific Northwest and Evergreen Speedway just outside Seattle.

NASCAR National Series – NCS/NXS/NCTS

Toyota Camrys around Playoffs in final regular season stretch … With just three races remaining in the Cup Series regular season, Toyota Camry XSE drivers can be found across the provisional Playoff field and cutline entering this weekend. Four Toyota drivers have already locked themselves into the Playoffs with victories this season – Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe and Bubba Wallace. Tyler Reddick sits in the best spot of any driver who hasn’t visited victory lane this season, currently 122 points above the cutline. Fighting for a Playoff berth, Ty Gibbs is the next Camry in line, currently 87 points out, but comes to Watkins Glen International looking to make up ground on another road course, a set of tracks where he’s been strong of late.

Wallace continuing strong runs … A sixth-place finish at Iowa Speedway last weekend gave Wallace his third straight top-10 finish, following his win at Indianapolis and a seventh-place result at Dover. The 23XI Racing driver has had one of his best Cup Series seasons to-date through 23 races, with one victory, four top-fives, and nine top-10s. He seeks another solid result this weekend at Watkins Glen International, to which he’s shown constant improvement on road courses the last few seasons.

Herbst, Grala back in GR Supras … As the Xfinity Series heads to Watkins Glen International this weekend, Riley Herbst and Kaz Grala are back behind the wheel of Toyota GR Supras. Herbst makes his fourth start of the season for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in the No. 19 GR Supra, looking for a third straight top-five result after finishing third and fifth in his last two Xfinity Series outings at Texas Motor Speedway and Sonoma Raceway. This will also be the fifth career start at Watkins Glen, where he looks to improve upon a career-best finish of seventh in 2022. For Grala, this is his second start with Sam Hunt Racing in the No. 24 GR Supra this season. He makes his fourth career start at Watkins Glen this weekend, looking to best a fifth-place finish he earned in 2022.

Bell pilots No. 52 Tundra TRD Pro … Replacing the injured Stewart Friesen in the No. 52 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro this weekend will be former Truck Series champion, Bell. Friday’s Truck race at Watkins Glen International will be the first Truck Series start of the season for the full-time Cup Series driver and his first series start since Las Vegas in March 2024. Bell has found success at Watkins Glen in his NASCAR career, earning two top-10s in both the Cup Series and Xfinity Series previously.

Sawalich returns to No. 1 Tundra TRD Pro … For the fifth time this season, Toyota Development Driver William Sawalich will pilot the No. 1 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro for TRICON Garage in this weekend’s Truck race at Watkins Glen International. Sawalich last ran in the Truck Series at Nashville Superspeedway in June and looks to improve upon a season-best finish of ninth at Daytona while pulling double duty with his full-time gig in the Xfinity Series with JGR.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA Menards Series National/East

Alan remains within championship striking distance … After a third-place finish last weekend at Iowa Speedway, Lawless Alan is still well within range of the points lead in the ARCA Menards Series. The Venturini Motorsports driver sits second in the standings, just 33 points behind the leader entering this weekend at Watkins Glen International. In 12 races this year, Alan has finished outside the top-10 only three times, with top-five finishes in six of the last seven races as well.

Formula DRIFT

Aasbø tied for points lead … With just three events remaining in the 2025 Formula DRIFT season, Toyota’s Fredric Aasbø sits tied atop the PRO category points lead entering this weekend in Seattle. The Norway native seeks his second event win of the season to follow his triumph at the season-opener in Long Beach as he pushes for his fourth PRO category championship.

Todd Gilliland Notes

All eyes are on Watkins Glen International for Todd Gilliland and the No. 34 team as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to New York for a 90-lap, 220-mile race at the historic 2.45-mile road course. In his three NASCAR Cup Series starts at Watkins Glen, Gilliland has earned two top-16 finishes — 11th in 2023 and 16th in 2024.

” Watkins Glen has been a good track for me,” said Gilliland. “It’s a high-speed road course that keeps you on edge every lap — you’re constantly cycling through gears, managing brake zones, and using every inch of the curbing to find time. We struggled in Iowa, but I think we can regain momentum this weekend.”

Team Stats & Notes

  • Return to the Glen: The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) returns to the scenic Watkins Glen International road course this weekend for the first time since 2021. The series has raced at this historic track on six occasions since 1996, and it marks the second of three road course events on the 2025 calendar.
  • Niece Motorsports Watkins Glen Stats: Niece Motorsports drivers have made a total of three starts at Watkins Glen. The team has one top-10 to its credit; a 10th-place showing with Carson Hocevar in 2021.

No. 42 Utilitra / J.F. Electric Chevrolet Silverado RST
Driver: Matt Mills | Crew Chief: Mike Shiplett

  • Mills’ Watkins Glen Stats: Matt Mills will make his first-career NCTS start at Watkins Glen International on Friday. In his lone NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) race at this track, Mills finished 38th due to a crash.
  • Shiplett’s Watkins Glen Stats: Mike Shiplett has yet to call a NCTS race at Watkins Glen. Shiplett has plenty of race experience at the track however, including five NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and seven NXS starts here. Shiplett finished inside the top-five (fourth) in the 2010 NCS race with AJ Allmendinger and ran third in the 2016 NXS race with Kyle Larson. He secured one top-five and three top-10s on Saturdays.
  • On the Truck: Mills’ No. 42 Chevrolet Silverado RST will race with support from longtime partners Utilitra and J.F. Electric, who will serve as his anchor partners for the entire 25-race season.
  • Recapping IRP: Matt Mills and the No. 42 J.F. Electric team put forth a great effort in IRP, but couldn’t find track position to move through the field. Mills started the race in 25th, and noted that his Chevrolet was tight early on. Through the first two stages, the team made several adjustments to help free his truck up, and were able to take advantage of the free pass to get back into contention. With a quick race pace and lack of cautions in the final stage, the team crossed the line in 21st-place.
  • Points Rundown: With two races left to run in the regular season, Mills remains 19th in points. He is currently 15 points behind Jack Wood in 18th, and also has a 15-point lead over Dawson Sutton in 20th-place. Facing a 219-point gap below the Playoffs cutline, Mills needs to win either at Watkins Glen or Richmond to qualify for the postseason.
  • Quoting Mills: Comparing your experience in the Xfinity Series on road courses, do trucks drive much differently here?

“Typically, going from an Xfinity car to a truck on a road course, you can drive a lot more aggressively and be harder on the brakes. The truck usually handles a lot better through the corners, so I think the speed is going to be a lot faster. I think Watkins Glen is another track that Niece Motorsports can be competitive at, so I’m excited to come back and race here again with our J.F. Electric team.”

About Utilitra: Utilitra is a woman-owned firm specializing in utility and technology solutions with a diverse team of specialized professionals. Utilitra is committed to solving their client’s unique challenges, whether one expert or a team of experts is needed. By adapting to the needs of their respective industries, Utilitra has built a range of services for their utility and technology partners.

About J.F. Electric: J.F. Electric is an electrical contractor that provides engineering expertise, backed by construction and installation know-how in a diverse range of service offerings, from utilities and commercial projects, to industrial and telecommunications customers. When having a long family history in an industry, a company not only builds on its knowledge and experience, it takes pride in cultivating a solid understanding of client needs, all the while nurturing strong relationships with its employees. Evolving through five generations of the Fowler family, J.F. Electric has matured into a well-managed and thoughtfully diversified electrical contractor which is poised to continue its growth and expansion into the future.

No. 44 Protect Your Melon New York Chevrolet Silverado RST
Driver: Ross Chastain | Crew Chief: Wally Rogers

  • Chastain’s Watkins Glen Stats: Ross Chastain will make his first-career NCTS start at Watkins Glen this weekend. Chastain has made several starts in other national series here, including six in the Cup Series. Last year, Chastain won the pole for the NCS race and went onto earn his first top-five (fourth) in the race. In eight NXS starts on the road course, Chastain has one top-five and two top-10s, including a fourth-place effort in 2023.
  • Rogers’ Watkins Glen Stats: Wally Rogers has called one prior NCTS race at Watkins Glen, finishing 34th with Chad Chastain in 2021. Rogers has also called four NXS races here, earning two top-10s including a best result of seventh with Bobby Labonte in 2007. In four NCS races, Rogers’ best run came with Scott Speed in 2012, when he finished 17th.
  • On the Truck: Chastain’s No. 44 Chevrolet Silverado RST will race with support from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, who has had a longstanding relationship with the veteran.
  • Recapping IRP: Ross Chastain and the No. 44 team had to earn their top-10 finish the hard way at IRP. Initially starting from the 12th position, Chastain fell back in the opening stage as the handling went away. After the first pit stop of the night, the left front tire fell off his truck, resulting in a freak airborne moment on pit road. With his battered Silverado trapped a lap down, Chastain would inevitably get back into contention via the free pass in stage two. From that point on, the team marched forward, and would finish the night in ninth-place.
  • Owner Points Rundown: The No. 44 team remains 17th in the owner points standings following their top-10 run in IRP. Heading into Watkins Glen, the team is only two points behind TRICON Garage’s No. 15 entry in 16th, and they have a 41-point lead over McAnally-Hilgemann Racing’s No. 81 Chevrolet in 18th.
  • Quoting Chastain: You’ll have a lot of other drivers from other series competing in this race, so who do you expect to run against most?

“For sure, I’d think the Truck Series regulars are going to be hard to beat. The guys that race trucks every week, they’re just so in tune with it. I love Watkins Glen as a road course, and have a fun time racing against those guys. No matter who else comes in from the other series, it’s the regulars that are probably going to be the toughest. I feel confident that our No. 44 Chevy will be able to compete amongst them all on Friday.”

About The New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee: The New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) coordinates traffic safety activities in the state and shares useful, timely information about traffic safety and the state’s highway safety grant program.

The Committee is comprised of thirteen agencies who have missions related to transportation and safety. The GTSC is chaired by the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles and acts as the state’s official liaison with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

No. 45 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado RST
Driver: Connor Zilisch | Crew Chief: Phil Gould

  • Driver Lineup: Road course ace and touted Chevrolet prospect, Connor Zilisch, will drive the No. 45 Silverado in Watkins Glen, and Bayley Currey will take over driving duties for the rest of the season.
  • Zilisch’s Watkins Glen Stats: Connor Zilisch will make his first NCTS start at Watkins Glen International on Friday. Zilisch is a two-time winner at this road course, having won both the NXS and ARCA races held here from the pole last year.
  • Gould’s Watkins Glen Stats: Phil Gould has called one NCTS race at Watkins Glen, which came in 2021 when he finished 10th with Carson Hocevar. In six NXS races held at the road course, Gould’s drivers finished inside the top-10 on four occasions, including a best finish of eighth, twice.
  • Recapping IRP: The No. 45 team fought the balance throughout the day at IRP. The team rolled off from 10th place to start, but experienced a tight handling condition and slid back in the first stage. Utilizing strategy to their benefit, the team pitted for four tires midway through stage two to pick up a handful of stage points in sixth. With a long run to end the night, the team was unable to capitalize on track position, relegating the No. 45 to a 14th-place finish.
  • Owner Points Rundown: The No. 45 team is in a heated battle to contend for the final position in the owner points standings. Heading into Watkins Glen, the team sits seventh overall, but only has a 12-point gap over the cutline with ThorSport Racing’s No. 98 entry. Conversely, the team is just six points behind Spire Motorsports’ No. 7 team in sixth. Over the course of the next two races, the No. 45 team’s goal is to gain enough points to secure a Playoff bid.
  • Quoting Zilisch: What are your thoughts on competing in all three NASCAR national series races this weekend in Watkins Glen?

“It’s going to be a really cool weekend. I’ve never raced for Niece Motorsports before, but obviously, they’ve had a lot of success over the years and it will be really cool to just get to be a part of their team for one race. Watkins Glen is a track that I really like. It’s going to be a busy weekend for me running all three series, but I’m excited to get the track time on Friday and get to race in the Truck Series. I’m looking forward to having the chance to get the No. 45 team some more owner points to help lock them into the Playoffs. I’m also thankful to everyone at Chevrolet, Trackhouse, and JRM for allowing me to do this.”

About Niece Motorsports: Niece Motorsports is a professional auto racing team founded by United States Marine Corps Veteran Al Niece. Fastport eQuad, Flagship Product from New Honda Business Venture, Wins “Red Dot: Best of the Best 2025” Award in Red Dot Award: Design Concept

TOKYO, Japan, August 6, 2025 – (JCN Newswire) – Honda today announced that the Fastport eQuad, an all-electric micromobility vehicle for last-mile delivery, has won the Red Dot: Best of the Best 2025 award in the Design Concept competition of the Red Dot Design Award*1. Moreover, two electric motorcycle concept models, the EV Fun Concept and the EV Urban Concept, were each named a Red Dot winner in the same competition, and the concept movie for the Honda V3 motorcycle engine, titled “New V3 Engine Concept Teaser,” was named the Red Dot winner in the Brand & Communication Design competition.

About the Honda award-winning models and concept movie

Fastport eQuad

The Fastport eQuad is a single-rider micromobility delivery vehicle that supplements the rider’s pedaling power with electric motor assistance. The Fastport eQuad realizes a powerful, smooth, quiet and zero-emission ride by combining a pedal-by-wire system, which electronically transmits the rider’s pedaling input to the driving force, with a pedal-assist powertrain, which boosts the rider’s pedaling with electric power. Honda designed the Fastport eQuad as a micromobility vehicle for use in bicycle lanes*2, enabling companies to improve the speed and efficiency of logistics in urban areas with complex traffic environments and heavy traffic congestion. Full-scale mass production of the Fastport eQuad is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026 at a U.S. Honda facility.

Key design features

The Fastport eQuad not only features a sleek design, but it is also thoughtfully engineered to ensure harmony with the real-world environments where it will be used. While using a bicycle as a motif, the design effectively incorporates transparent materials to enable the rider to intuitively recognize pedestrians and other road conditions in the surrounding area. The clear windshield ensures excellent visibility for the rider while also providing a view of the rider from the outside. A translucent cargo container was adopted to reduce the visual volume of the Fastport eQuad.

EV Fun Concept

Honda V3 motorcycle engine with an electrical compressor

In order to create attractive motorcycle products that go beyond customer expectations, Honda is developing the world’s first*3 V3 motorcycle engine with an electrical compressor. By controlling compression of the intake air irrespective of engine rpm, high-response torque can be delivered even from lower rpm. In addition, the adoption of the engineering design that does not require an intercooler for the cooling of the compressors allows a high degree of freedom for component layout within the limited space available on a motorcycle, which can be leveraged to achieve a concentration of the mass and reduction of the vehicle weight.

Key features of the concept movie, “New V3 Engine Concept Teaser”

This concept movie showcases the journey of technological innovation Honda has pursued through continuous challenges in the field of motorcycle technologies, as well as the development process for the world’s first V3 motorcycle engine with an electrical compressor. With a rhythmically structured narrative, the movie deliberately incorporates glitch effects that momentarily disrupt the image to stimulate the viewer’s curiosity and anticipation. In the final scene of the movie, the actual sound of the electric compressor is used to convey a sense of excitement and momentum of the development toward the practical application to products and evoke high expectations for the future riding experiences this engine will offer. To powerfully express the “genuine commitment of Honda to carve out the future,” all individuals featured in this movie are real Honda engineers. Through the use of authentic footage showing countless discussions and repeated prototyping that took place at the site of the development, the movie production team strived to convey the passion and ambition Honda put into the development.

Finding Your Groove: The Emotional Journey of Driving

Remember the first time you sat behind the wheel? The mix of excitement and fear coursing through your veins as you gripped the steering wheel, your heart pounding with anticipation? That moment represents more than just a rite of passage—it’s the beginning of a deeply personal relationship with one of humanity’s most transformative inventions. Driving goes beyond simple transportation; it’s an intricate dance between human emotion, mechanical precision, and split-second decision-making that can evoke everything from pure joy to life-saving awareness.

Let’s embark on an emotional journey of driving, exploring the exhilarating art of cornering that makes racing drivers’ hearts soar, demystifying your vehicle’s complex dynamics in ways that connect to your everyday experiences, and examining the critical importance of safety measures that protect what matters most. Whether you’re a seasoned driver looking to rediscover your passion for the road or someone just beginning to understand the profound connection between human and machine, you’ll gain valuable insights into the artistry of driving, develop a deeper appreciation for your vehicle’s sophisticated engineering, and understand how simple safety measures can mean the difference between life and death.

The Art of Cornering

There’s something almost mystical about the perfect corner—that moment when physics, skill, and intuition converge into automotive poetry. Professional racing drivers often describe cornering as a transcendent experience, where time seems to slow down and every input becomes magnified. This art represents the pinnacle of driving technique, combining precise throttle control, strategic braking, and an intimate understanding of weight transfer that separates good drivers from great ones.

The foundation of masterful cornering lies in understanding the racing line—the optimal path through a curve that maximizes speed while maintaining control. This invisible line typically involves entering wide, hitting the apex (the innermost point of the turn), and exiting wide, creating the largest possible radius for the corner. Professional drivers spend years perfecting this technique, learning to read the road like a musician reads sheet music, anticipating each curve’s unique personality and demands.

What makes cornering truly emotional is the delicate balance between confidence and respect for the limits of physics. Too aggressive, and you’ll find yourself sliding helplessly toward the outside of the turn; too conservative, and you’ll never experience the pure joy of a perfectly executed corner. This balance requires what racing instructors call “progressive learning”—gradually building speed and confidence while developing the muscle memory and spatial awareness that become second nature to accomplished drivers.

The technique involves a systematic approach: smooth braking before the turn (never during), gradual steering input to avoid unsettling the car’s balance, and progressive acceleration as you unwind the steering wheel through the exit. To master the thrill and technique of cornering, consider taking professional driving lessons that often emphasize these fundamentals, teaching students that cornering isn’t about speed alone—it’s about smoothness, precision, and the deeply satisfying feeling of working in harmony with your vehicle’s capabilities.

Modern racing drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen describe cornering as an almost meditative state where conscious thought gives way to pure instinct. They speak of feeling the car’s weight shift through their bodies, sensing the exact moment when the tires reach their grip limit, and experiencing an almost telepathic connection with their machines. This emotional dimension of cornering—the rush of adrenaline combined with the zen-like focus required for precision—is what transforms driving from mere transportation into an art form that captivates millions of enthusiasts worldwide.

Understanding Your Vehicle’s Dynamics

Beneath the hood of every car lies a complex symphony of mechanical systems working in perfect harmony, yet understanding vehicle dynamics doesn’t require an engineering degree—it simply needs relatable comparisons to experiences you already know. Think of your car as an extension of your own body, responding to inputs and environmental changes much like you do when walking, running, or riding a bicycle.

Vehicle dynamics fundamentally revolve around four key forces: acceleration, braking, cornering, and the constant battle against gravity and inertia. When you press the accelerator, you’re not just making the car go faster—you’re shifting weight toward the rear axle, potentially reducing traction at the front wheels. This weight transfer is similar to how you naturally lean backward when someone pulls you forward quickly. Understanding this concept helps explain why front-wheel-drive cars sometimes experience understeer (pushing wide in corners) when accelerating aggressively through turns.

Braking dynamics work in reverse, transferring weight forward and potentially causing the rear wheels to lose traction if you’re too aggressive. It’s like trying to stop suddenly while running down a hill—your body wants to keep moving forward, and your car experiences the same physics. This forward weight transfer is why many performance cars have larger brake discs in the front and why anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are so crucial for maintaining control during emergency stops.

The suspension system acts as your car’s nervous system, constantly communicating road conditions to the chassis while managing weight transfer and maintaining tire contact with the pavement. Think of it like the shock-absorbing qualities of your knees and ankles when walking over uneven terrain—your suspension smooths out road imperfections while keeping your tires planted for optimal grip.

Steering dynamics involve complex interactions between your input, the front wheels’ response, and how the entire vehicle reacts to directional changes. Modern cars employ various systems—from electronic stability control to torque vectoring—that act like a skilled dance partner, subtly adjusting to help you maintain control even when you make imperfect inputs. A quality driving school will help you understand these systems not as electronic nannies, but as sophisticated tools that enhance your natural driving abilities.

Perhaps most importantly, understanding vehicle dynamics helps you recognize your car’s limits before reaching them. Just as you intuitively know when you’re walking too fast for icy conditions, developing a feel for your vehicle’s capabilities allows you to drive confidently within safe parameters while still enjoying the engaging aspects of performance driving.

Safety First: The Importance of Seatbelts

The simple click of a seatbelt buckle represents one of the most profound safety innovations in automotive history, yet many drivers fail to grasp the life-and-death physics occurring in those crucial milliseconds during a collision. Understanding seatbelt science isn’t just about following laws—it’s about appreciating how a simple piece of fabric and metal can mean the difference between walking away from an accident and becoming a tragic statistic.

When your vehicle suddenly stops due to impact, your body continues moving at the original speed due to Newton’s first law of motion—an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force. Without a seatbelt, that external force becomes your steering wheel, dashboard, or windshield, creating devastating injuries. The seatbelt serves as a controlled external force, distributing impact energy across your strongest body parts—your chest and pelvis—while allowing for some controlled forward movement that reduces peak forces.

Modern seatbelt systems incorporate sophisticated engineering that goes far beyond simple restraint. Pre-tensioners detect crash conditions and instantly tighten the belt, eliminating slack before your body begins moving forward. Load limiters then allow controlled belt extension once forces reach dangerous levels, preventing the seatbelt itself from causing injury. This two-stage process mimics how a professional boxer rolls with a punch—first establishing contact, then managing energy dissipation.

Real-world accident data provides compelling evidence of seatbelt effectiveness. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 45% for front-seat passengers and serious injury by 50%. These aren’t just statistics—they represent thousands of families who avoided tragedy because someone took two seconds to buckle up.

The emotional impact of seatbelt stories resonates deeply with emergency responders who’ve witnessed the dramatic difference between belted and unbelted occupants in similar crashes. Paramedics and firefighters consistently report that seatbelt use is often the primary factor determining whether they’re responding to a rescue or a fatality. These first responders become passionate advocates for seatbelt use because they’ve seen too many preventable tragedies.

Professional driving schools emphasize that seatbelt use must become as automatic as checking mirrors or signaling turns. They teach students that safety isn’t about fear—it’s about responsibility to yourself, your passengers, and other road users. The emotional weight of this responsibility becomes clear when you consider that your driving decisions affect not just your own life, but the lives of everyone who loves and depends on you.

Embracing the Journey Ahead

The emotional journey of driving encompasses far more than the mechanical act of operating a vehicle—it’s a profound exploration of human capability, technological marvel, and personal responsibility that touches every aspect of our mobile lives. From the artistic precision required to master cornering techniques that connect us intimately with our vehicles, to understanding the sophisticated dynamics that make modern cars responsive extensions of our intentions, to embracing safety measures that protect our most precious cargo, driving represents one of humanity’s most complex and rewarding skills.

This journey never truly ends. Every time you slide behind the wheel, you have the opportunity to refine your technique, deepen your understanding, and recommit to the safety practices that keep you and others protected. The thrill of a perfectly executed corner, the satisfaction of smoothly managing your vehicle’s dynamics, and the peace of mind that comes from proper safety habits combine to create an experience that’s simultaneously exhilarating and responsible.

We invite you to share your own driving experiences and the lessons that have shaped your relationship with the road. What moments have defined your emotional journey behind the wheel? What techniques or insights have transformed your driving? Join the conversation in the comments below or share your stories on social media—because every driver’s journey is unique, and we can all learn from each other’s experiences on the road to automotive mastery.

ERIK JONES QUOTE
“Watkins Glen is always kind of a wild card. I’ve run well there in the Cup Series in the past, but we haven’t quite been able to get those top-10 finishes the past two years. With the speed we’ve had on road courses this summer though, I think you could see us up there competing for a strong finish this weekend. We were fast in Mexico and Chicago, and then dropped off a little at Sonoma. We’ve been working hard on our road course program, so I’m excited to see what the teams can bring to the track this weekend.”

BEN BESHORE QUOTE
“I feel like as a team we’ve been 50/50 on road courses this year. Mexico and Chicago performance-wise went okay. We had some issues during the races, but we had some speed. Then we really struggled at COTA and Sonoma. I think Watkins Glen is a little bit different style of road course from the others though. It’s a more high-speed road course over the very technical ones like Sonoma or Chicago. There’s a little bit more emphasis on aerodynamics rather than straight up forward drive. It’s a little bit different from that standpoint. Strategy-wise – you can do it a couple different ways at Watkins Glen. I think you’ll see most guys try to short pit both stages and then pit sometime early in the fuel window that final stage. You may even have some guys who try to do it on a two-stop strategy where you pit at the end of Stage 1 and then run it out to your fuel window at Lap 55 or so. Tires do fall of a little bit more than they have in the past there due to the softer tire. It’s kind of a coin flip on what’s going to be the best strategy there. It just kind of depends on how the cautions fall. Sometimes I wish we had a crystal ball so we could see how it would play out, but you have to anticipate what to do in every situation. It’ll also be key to see how the tires fall off during practice since it’ll be on the warmer side this weekend. Tires might be a bigger deal than they have been in the past.”

CLUB APPEARANCES:
Nemechek will be at the NASCAR Classics trackside merchandise rig to sign for fans at 10:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, Aug. 9.

How does Watkins Glen compare to the other road courses on the Cup Series schedule?
“Watkins Glen is a momentum track. It’s long, has a lot of lateral loading, and it flows very differently. It’s different than Sonoma. You have quick switchbacks when you think about Mexico City or Chicago, and it’s just so different. Obviously, it’s higher speeds and higher loading. The easiest way to describe it is like racing on a mile-and-a-half oval, but on a road course.

Chicago is similar to Martinsville, and Sonoma is probably like Bristol. It’s just that different of a feel when it comes to those tracks. Your fundamentals are still the same, but the way you attack Watkins Glen is different than how you attack Sonoma. There’s no doubt about it. It fits my style well. From an overall speed standpoint, it’s probably my best track. We don’t really have the results to show for it, but in qualifying the last few years, we’ve started in the top five or close to it.

I’ve won a few stages and led a bunch of laps, but it just hasn’t come together, whether it was an engine failure two years ago, or whatever happened last year. We’ve just had some missed opportunities there. But overall, from a speed perspective, Watkins Glen is probably one of my best tracks. I’m excited to have the Go Bowling at The Glen race outside the playoffs this year, just because I feel like it’s another opportunity and another shot for us to try to get a win.”

  • Hocevar made his first and only NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series start at The Glen in 2021. He started ninth, finished Stage 2 in seventh and claimed a 10th-place effort in the regular-season finale.
  • One day prior, Hocevar competed in the ARCA Menards Series race at Watkins Glen, starting and finishing in the fourth position.
  • The Delaware Life team is coming off an eighth-place showing in last Sunday’s race at Iowa Speedway. Hocevar qualified sixth and earned stage points in Stage 1 before a spin midway through Stage 2 sent him to the back of the pack. The Portage, Mich., native rallied for his best finish in two appearances at the 0.875-mile D-shaped oval and his second top-10 finish in as many races.
  • With 23 races complete in the 2025 season, Hocevar has two top-five results and has led 80 laps – an improvement in both categories over his total from the entire 2024 campaign. With his finish of eighth at Iowa, he matched his top-10 total from 2024.

At Watkins Glen last year, we saw you battle for a win and ultimately earn your first top-five finish in the Cup Series. Was that the race that set the No. 77 on the path its on now, and how do you feel heading back to that track?
“I think it was probably the first time that people really got to see Spire cars running up front and holding our own. Since then it’s only been improvement for the whole organization. We have up and down weeks, but that’s part of building a consistently successful program. Every weekend we have at least two cars running in the top 10, if not all three right there together. I just think Watkins Glen last year was a race where people started to pay attention. That’s definitely continued this season and I feel like the last two races are a really good example of that. At Indy we had two cars finish within the first 11 spots and Iowa we had a car in the top-10 all day and probably would’ve had similar results without the way the cautions fell in the middle of the race. I’m excited to get back to The Glen. We’ve got a lot of momentum heading into this race and we’ve done a really good job of continuing to improve at tracks where we’ve done well in the past.”

Atop the No. 77 Box – Crew Chief Luke Lambert

  • Luke Lambert will call his 12 NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen on Sunday. Hocevar’s third-place finish in last year’s event was the first top five for the veteran crew chief at the venue.
  • The Mount Airy, N.C., native has also called two NASCAR Xfinity Series races at Watkins Glen with his best result coming in his most recent. Lambert led Noah Gragson to a fourth-place finish in 2022.
