QUOTE WORTHY
Buescher on racing at Kansas:
“Kansas is a place we seemed to figure something out at the last couple races, and is a very fast race track and one that is fun to drive you have the right speed. Our team is poised for another good run after an up and down week at Darlington.”

Last Time Out
Buescher finished 16th at Darlington last weekend after the No. 17 team battled back late in the running of a chaotic 400-mile race.

On the Car

Buescher and the No. 17 team will carry the Castrol GTX banner this weekend, the first Castrol appearance with the No. 17 this season. The No. 6 team and Ryan Newman ran the GTX scheme last fall in the season finale at Phoenix.

Castrol GTX Full Synthetic provides maximum protection to help fight the impact of severe conditions that can potentially shorten engine life. Tough driving conditions like idling on congested highways and frequent, short trips put peak loads on critical engine parts and create engine wear. Environmental factors like heat can lead to sludge, varnish and carbon build-up in your engine. Castrol GTX Full Synthetic has been proven to dramatically reduce engine wear – 6X better than the industry standard.* It also cleans away old sludge* and protects against new sludge formation 1.3X better than required by the latest industry standard, giving you more control over today’s difficult driving conditions and miles more driving enjoyment.

Aric Almirola, Driver of the No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

How would you assess the speed of your cars right now?

“The results have not shown it recently, but we have had top-10 runs every weekend. We got caught two laps down on pit road in Dover with at least an eighth-place car and, last weekend at Darlington, we had a top-10 car, but pit strategy is always tough there. The speed is there, the team is there, the pit crew has been on it. We continue to show speed no matter what the track configuration is, so I think we’re where we want to be. We just need to capitalize on those good days and stay out of trouble.”

Are you where you want to be in the playoff standings?

“I’m not paying a whole lot of attention to the point standings. We’re more focused on improving our car each weekend and throughout the weekend the best we can. We’re still going to tracks without notes, so you can’t put a lot of focus on points when we have so much to learn and build on.”

What are your thoughts when you head to Kansas?

“I’ve always enjoyed Kansas. I know that I did have a really bad accident there, but in my mind I just view that as a bad accident. It just happened at a place. It just so happened to be at Kansas. It could have happened anywhere. I don’t really put that on Kansas and so, every time I’ve been back since then, it’s never really been a thought that’s crossed my mind. I actually enjoy going to Kansas. I have friends in Kansas City who I enjoy spending time with that makes it even more enjoyable to be there and, on top of that, I love the racetrack. The racetrack is a really fun racetrack to run at for me and I’ve had a lot of success there and had a lot of really good runs there.”

Chandler Smith – No. 18 Charge Me Tundra TRD Pro Camping World Trucks Kansas Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 Charge Me Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: Heart of America 200, Race 8 of 23, 134 Laps –30/30/74; 201 Miles
Location: Kansas Speedway in Kansas City (1.5-mile tri-oval)
Date/Broadcast: May 14, 2022, at 8 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Mr. Smith Heads to the Heart of America:
Chandler Smith and the No. 18 Charge Me team head to Kansas Speedway for Saturday’s Heart of America 200. Friday night will be Smith’s third start at Kansas in the Truck Series. He finished fifth in last year’s event after finishing 11th in his inaugural start at the at the 1.5-mile venue. The talented teenager has an average finish of 2.5 across two starts on mile-and-a-half tracks in the Truck Series in 2022, with a win at Las Vegas and a fourth-place finish at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway. He combined to lead 56 laps in those two races.

After seven races Smith sits third in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular season point standings, 32 tallies behind reigning series champion Ben Rhodes. Through the first seven events of the season Smith leads Truck Series regulars in average starting position (4.7), ranks second in average finish (9.3) third in average running position (8.324) and fourth in driver rating (100.5) and laps led (56). He has produced one win, three top-five and four top-10 finishes in his sophomore campaign.

The Georgia driver earned NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 and finished eighth in the championship standings after producing two victories, one pole, 213 laps led, six top-five and nine top-10 finishes in his first full-time season. He earned his first career Truck Series victory at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in September and in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway earned his first career pole and swept all three stages en route to his second victory.

In addition to his Truck Series schedule in 2022, Smith is competing in a three-race schedule with Sam Hunt Racing (SHR). Smith finished 38th in his series debut at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway after a mid-race wreck and finished 21st at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway. His final race with SHR will come Oct. 22 at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.

Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman will once again call the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team in 2022. Stockman’s drivers have produced six victories at KBM across his first two seasons, including two with Smith behind the wheel in 2021. The veteran crew chief captured a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and also won an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s drivers have produced one top-five and three top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 9.3 across six Truck Series starts at Kansas. His best result was a fifth-place finish in last year’s race with Smith. In Xfinity Series action, his driver’s have complied three poles, three top-five and four top-five finishes, including runner-up finishes with Austin Dillon (2012) and Daniel Hemric (2018).

Charge Me will serve as the primary sponsor on the Smith’s No. 18 Tundra TRD Pro at Kansas Saturday. Charge Me was founded on the principle that the electric vehicle (EV) revolution will require robust infrastructure support at all levels. Safelite, the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement and recalibration services will serve as an associate sponsor on the bedtop of Smith’s Toyota this week and for 16 races as a primary sponsor throughout the 2022 season.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

You’ve been strong on mile-and-a-half tracks this year with a win at Las Vegas and a near win at Atlanta. Are you looking forward to Kansas?
“Yeah, for sure. Just like I was telling my crew chief Danny Stockman, Kansas and Vegas are really similar. The lateral load differences, the banking and the actual shape of the track, make them really similar. With that being said, I’m really happy to get my Charge Me Tundra back out to Kansas.”

Is the Kansas race important one because it is also the elimination race in the Round of 10 of the Playoffs?
“Oh yeah, a thousand percent. Also, with that being said, last year we really weren’t that great at Kansas. So, kind of going back and re-baselining, because we were good there two years ago when I was in the 51 there. We were really good and had a truck capable of winning the race. Last year, we weren’t very good at all. So re-baselining, going back with kind of what we know worked before at Kansas combined with our Vegas package and hopefully, we can charge to the front.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 45 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded three wins, 362 laps led, 17 top-five and 22 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.3.

● Busch Light, a longtime supporter of farming communities, is bringing limited-edition “For the Farmers” cans to fans across the country. A portion of the proceeds from the release will benefit Farm Rescue, a non-profit that provides critical material aid to family farms. Available May 16 through July 3, consumers can purchase 24- or 30-pack cases of 12-ounce “For the Farmers” Busch Light cans. For each case sold during its limited run, Busch Light will donate $1 to Farm Rescue, up to a maximum of $100,000. Since its inception in 2005, Farm Rescue has helped nearly 800 family farms sustain operations in times of crisis, providing hands-on assistance to farm and ranch families that have experienced a major injury, illness or natural disaster. These efforts are made possible through a network of volunteers from across the United States. Busch has been a partner of Farm Rescue since early 2019.

● Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home. And for Harvick, home is an intermediate racetrack. With apologies to those in Harvick’s hometown of Bakersfield, California, the veteran racer has made the intermediate tracks that comprise the majority of the NASCAR Cup Series schedule his home. Of Harvick’s 58 career NASCAR Cup Series wins, 23 have come at intermediate-style racetracks. Kansas is a sweeping, D-shaped oval that has produced high speeds and daring, side-by-side racing since its debut in 2001. Harvick has competed at the track for every one of its Cup Series races – one of only three drivers to do so (Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman being the others) – and has amassed quite the history in his 32 career starts. Three wins, five second-place finishes, 11 top-threes, 12 top-fives, 19 top-10s and 949 laps led make Harvick one of the most successful drivers in Kansas’ relatively young history. His average start is 13.1, his average finish is 8.9 and he has a lap completion rate of 98.7 percent.

● Harvick’s recent history at Kansas amplifies his overall record at the 1.5-mile oval. Harvick has five straight top-10 finishes in his last five NASCAR Cup Series starts at Kansas. In his last four Kansas races, he has four consecutive top-fives. And in his last three Kansas races, Harvick has finished among the top-three, a run that includes two second-place finishes (May 2021 and October 2020).

● Harvick scored his first NASCAR Cup Series win at Kansas in the 2013 Hollywood Casino 400 with a massive 1.140-second margin over runner-up Kurt Busch. Harvick scored his next Kansas win in the 2016 Hollywood Casino 400 with another impressive performance, crossing the stripe 1.183 seconds ahead of next best Carl Edwards. Harvick’s most recent Kansas victory came in May 2018 when he beat Martin Truex, Jr., by .390 of a second.

● Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon lead the NASCAR Cup Series in wins at Kansas with three victories apiece. Only Harvick, Hamlin and Logano are still active, and only nine of the 16 Cup Series winners at Kansas are active. Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 marks the 33rd Cup Series race at Kansas.

● Harvick’s 12 top-fives at Kansas are the most among active drivers, as are his 19 top-10s, and both are by a wide margin. Next best in top-fives are Kyle Busch, Hamlin and Truex with nine top-fives apiece. And when it comes to top-10s, Truex is next best with 14 top-10s.

● No one has led more laps at Kansas than Harvick. His 949 laps led around the 1.5-mile oval are 146 more laps than Truex, his nearest pursuer in this category.

● Harvick also leads nearly every Loop Data category at Kansas: Average Finish of 7.8 (series-best); Average Running Position of 8.5 (series-best): Driver Rating of 109.0 (series-best); 649 Fastest Laps Run (series-best); 6,126 Laps in the Top-15 (82.3 percent, series-most) and 1,124 Quality Passes (series-most).

● Harvick is good at Kansas even outside of the NASCAR Cup Series. He has six top-fives across 11 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the track, with the highlight being a victory in September 2006 when he beat Matt Kenseth for the win by .423 of a second. Kenseth retired from NASCAR upon the conclusion of the 2020 season and was recently named to the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Busch Light #ForTheFarmers Ford Mustang

Your history at Kansas is impressive. Three wins, five second-place finishes, 11 top-threes, 12 top-fives, 19 top-10s and 949 laps led across 32 career NASCAR Cup Series starts. What makes you so good there?

“I think Kansas has been a great racetrack and, really from a driver’s standpoint, a fun racetrack because of the fact that it’s worn in so well. You can race at the top of the racetrack, which is the preferred groove as the tires wear out. It’s faster at the bottom of the racetrack on new tires. But as a driver, having options is something that is a lot of fun. With Atlanta having been repaved along with some of the other racetracks, Kansas has become one of the more unique racetracks because of the fact the asphalt and the shape of the racetrack is so driver-friendly, as far as where you can drive on the racetrack. You can literally drive from the wall to the apron all the way around the racetrack. So, it’s a fun racetrack. It’s been good to us and, hopefully, we can continue that trend on Sunday in our Busch Light #ForTheFarmers Ford Mustang.”

With races at intermediate tracks in Fontana, California, and Las Vegas already under your belt, do either of those races provide a level of expectation for Kansas?

“I think Vegas kind of leaned more toward what we’ll see at Kansas compared to some of the other racetracks. Kansas is just a cool racetrack that you can move around on from the top to the bottom. These cars race a lot better on the mile-and-a-halves than I think we all thought they would. I look for Kansas, especially with the cooler part of the year, to be a good race just because of what we’ve seen so far this season.”

How quickly are you developing the NextGen car? Specifically, how applicable are two races at the end of February/early March in helping you prepare for a race more than two months later?

“As you look at the way things are going, every week is an evolution. From where we were at California to where we’ll be at Kansas is going to be a pretty big step forward.”

By being able to move around on the track at Kansas, can you be more aggressive with these cars than you can at other tracks?

“In certain situations. I think from pushing, restarts, things like that, you can be pretty aggressive with them, but you also have to be pretty careful with them in certain spots, because it can get out from underneath you pretty quickly.”

Race strategy, particularly at Kansas, has come into play in recent races. While strategy is more in the realm of your crew chief, Rodney Childers, when it dictates a race outcome instead of sheer performance, do you have to sort of switch your mindset, perhaps by finding some patience even when you want to just go as hard as you can?

“These cars, in certain situations, have worn the tires a lot more than what they’ve done in the past. Kansas can be a high-wear racetrack just because of the way that the surface has aged, which is a great thing. So, I think for a lot of that, you’ll just have to see what the pit windows are and what the tire wear is when we go there. But it’s definitely a racey track. Those guys can see a lot more on the pit box than I can see in the car, so I usually just go with what they tell me and kind of roll from there.”

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 10, 2022) – For NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year contender Todd Gilliland, maybe this season is going better than expected? Gilliland has been competitive in early season races and has scored four top-20 finishes. Although not getting a top-10 finish yet, Gilliland has raced up front at some tracks while still learning others. Gilliland is learning to take the positives from each race.

“I think so, we’re learning each race,” said Gilliland. “There have been tracks like Dover where we just did not have a good weekend at all, but tracks like Auto Club, Phoenix, Daytona, and Talladega, we’re running strong. Sometimes the finishes just didn’t represent the way we raced. In that sense, we are doing better than I think. But it’s all about the results and we want more.”

“I’ve been a little surprised about the transition from racing the truck to racing the new Cup car,” continued Gilliland. “It is still an adjustment, but it is not too bad. I think that has helped. Now, it’s just getting used to this new car and the competition at the Cup level. But I felt that we have been able to compete with these guys and beat them. We just need to get the finishes.”

The next opportunity for the team comes this Sunday at the Kansas Speedway. Gilliland is looking to put together a strong run with the No. 38 First Phase Ford. The new credit card from CURO Credit, LLC, issued by The Bank of Missouri, provides pathways to financial freedom for people with unestablished or imperfect credit.

“I am thankful for the support of CURO and First Phase credit card for all their support this season,” continued Gilliland. “They jumped into this journey with us, and I feel like I want to perform for my team and for them, too. It’s great to know that they have my back and want to see us race well. We just want to keep working hard for them.”

Gilliland and the First Phase Ford Mustang will hit the track at the Kansas Speedway on May 15 at 3:00 PM ET on FS1.

McDowell Enters Kansas with Three Top-10 Finishes in Last Four Races

Love’s Travel Stops Ford Team Aims for More

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 10, 2022) – Michael McDowell and the Love’s Travel Stops Ford team enter Kansas this weekend with no shortage of momentum. Exiting Darlington with another top-10 finish, both the driver and the team are poised to add to the streak.

“For me, I am always looking ahead and preparing for the next race,” said McDowell. “Our recent finishes are something to celebrate and be proud of, but now it’s time to do more. With all the information we have learned about the new car over the last few months, and the results that we’re seeing, we know that we can keep getting better and grab some top-five results. That’s extremely difficult to do with the competition, but I feel that we can do it if we have great races.

“From the beginning of the season to now, we have made great gains. As we race the new car, you learn more about it. We are doing a good job of taking that information and putting it into the car to find more speed. It’s been paying off.”

McDowell and his Love’s Travel Stops Ford Mustang team will take to the Kansas Speedway this Saturday for practice and qualifying, followed by the race Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET on FS1.

Smith Looks to Continue Streak of Top-10 Finishes

Ready to Put Speedco in Victory Lane for Third Time in 2022

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 10, 2022) – Zane Smith and the No. 38 Speedco Ford Performance F-150 team head to the Kansas Speedway looking to add win number three to the 2022 season.

Smith enters this weekend’s race on a streak of five consecutive top-10 finishes. The team also has three top-five finishes and is the only driver with multiple wins in 2022. Smith is fifth in the current championship standings and leads the Playoff standings.

“We can’t ask for a better start to the season,” Smith stated. “This streak of top-10 results isn’t something I really try to focus on at the track. We’re trying to win every race, but we have been able to put together some strong races. The results then follow. But the position we are in with the two wins, we can be aggressive to try and get more. We want to get more.”

Smith hopes to put the Speedco brand back in Victory Lane this weekend, in what would be his first victory at a mile-and-a-half track.

“It’s crazy that I haven’t picked up a win at a mile-and-a-half track yet,” said Smith. “It is bound to happen at some point. Hopefully, we can park in Victory Lane this weekend with Speedco partners in attendance. I can’t thank them enough for what they do for myself and our No. 38 team.”

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Kansas will air live on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ET on FS1.

Wright Motorsports Seeks to Build on Success at Mid-Ohio Home Race

BATAVIA, Ohio, (May 10, 2022) – The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races in Lexington, Ohio this weekend, and that means Porsche customer racing team Wright Motorsports – who leads the GTD class championship – is preparing to race at the organization’s home track. Drivers Ryan Hardwick and Jan Heylen have celebrated two wins in four races and will look to continue their success in front of the home crowd at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

“Mid-Ohio is a special racetrack for us since it is so close to our main shop in Batavia, Ohio,” said Team Owner John Wright. “Coming into this event as the points leaders brings a healthy kind of pressure for us to continue our drive in this championship effort. We know we have a proven driver lineup, a more than capable race car, and a consistently the fastest team in pit lane. This will be a good event for us.”

The No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche 911 GT3 R will be the sole Porsche contender in the GTD category, representing the manufacturer in the 13-car class. The event will have a total of 34 entries, with all but the GTD Pro class participating. From the team’s Batavia-Ohio headquarters, the effort will journey 170 miles northeast to Lexington, Ohio to the 13-turn, 2.258-mile road course.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona winners are coming off another win at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, another sweeping, low-grip circuit. Their home track has been traditionally strong for the team. In 2021, the weekend started with Hardwick claiming his first-ever “points pole” qualifying position in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The team started the race in tenth and made it up to fourth place when the 1st Phorm Porsche received contact from another competitor, an incident that sent the team three laps behind the leaders. That same weekend, Hardwick and Heylen earned Wright Motorsports a second-place finish in the team’s GT4 racing effort in the Michelin Pilot Challenge series following another pole-position qualifying effort from Hardwick. In a unique twist for the multi-faceted team, with most race series quiet this weekend, Wright will only have the single Porsche under its awning at Mid-Ohio.

This weekend, the team will look to build on their recent achievements in Sunday’s sprint race, which will have a runtime of two hours and forty minutes. The Lexus Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio will go green on Sunday, May 15 at 2:10 PM Eastern. Television coverage will begin at 2:00 PM on the USA Network. Peacock subscribers can also stream live starting at 2:00 PM.

DRIVER QUOTES

Ryan Hardwick
It’s a home race for our Wright Motorsports team this weekend at Mid-Ohio! We are very proud to be coming into this home race with the GTD championship points lead. I’ve always enjoyed racing at Mid-Ohio, and I’ve had quite a bit of success at this track. I finished on the GTD podium here in 2019 and 2020, and I also took the pole position here last season for the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race as well. So it’s safe to say that I like this place! The focus is going to be centered around keeping our positive momentum going and continuing to execute on what we can control. Looking forward to it!

Jan Heylen
This is the home race for Wright Motorsports, and we’re back in the lead of the championship. The goal is to keep It there. Mid-Ohio is another low-grip surface which should suit us well.

Renegade™ Partners with Stewart-Haas Racing

Leading Insurance Agency Aligns with Driver Aric Almirola and No. 10 Team

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 10, 2022) – Renegade™, a revolutionary insurance agency platform that empowers top agents and agency owners to break free from old insurance and establish their own independent practices, has partnered with Stewart-Haas Racing, the championship-winning NASCAR team.

Renegade will make its debut on the No. 10 Ford Mustang of NASCAR Cup Series driver Aric Almirola beginning with this weekend’s event at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City with Renegade emblazoned across the car’s roof, just above the rear windshield. Renegade’s first race as a primary sponsor of Almirola and the No. 10 team will be Sept. 3-4 during the Southern 500 race weekend at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

“NASCAR is a fast-paced sport and Renegade embodies that expeditious need for change in the insurance industry for our agents, customer and carrier partners. We’ve partnered with Stewart-Haas Racing to help tell our story,” said Rashik Adhikari, founder and CEO, Renegade.

“Insurance agents continue to face challenges. On one hand, you have captive agents who are exclusive to one insurance company and, on the other hand, you have independent agencies who struggle with technology, customer service and alignment with their carrier partners. As a result, the status quo has insurance agents who can’t maximize their potential and customers who don’t get the choice, expertise and service they deserve from their agents. This status quo, however, needs to change – fast and reliably. Renegade facilitates this change with speed, efficiency and accuracy – the same winning mentality Stewart-Haas Racing brings to the track.”

Renegade empowers agents who want to challenge the status quo and win for the customers and the carrier partners. By combining cutting-edge technology and best-in-class expertise, Renegade agents grow their customer roster faster, service their customers better and, ultimately, retain them longer by providing the best insurance options and advice, all in one place. By working with more than 80 insurance carriers, Renegade delivers unbiased insurance solutions its customers can trust.

These tenets align well with motorsports and, specifically, Stewart-Haas Racing, where its drivers and their teams are always looking to challenge the past, go faster and perform better, with the unceasing goal of winning races and championships.

“This is my 11th fulltime season in the NASCAR Cup Series, but it never gets old bringing a new partner into the sport,” said Almirola, a three-time race winner in the NASCAR Cup Series. “Renegade is an ambitious company that is striving for the same thing we are – to be the best and deliver results. It’s an honor to have them on my racecar.”
