HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina (Sept. 22, 2021) – Even though Ty Gibbs is scheduled to make just his 15th career NASCAR Xfinity Series start in Saturday’s Alsco Uniforms 302 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he’ll hope to kick off a championship run in the series, albeit a different kind of championship.

While the Xfinity Series playoffs for the driver title begins this weekend at Las Vegas, Gibbs will kick off the final seven-race stretch of the season with the No. 54 team very much in the hunt for the owner title. He’s shared the car this season with Joe Gibbs Racing’s (JGR) Cup Series regulars Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., and Christopher Bell, along with Cup Series veteran Ty Dillon, who joined the team for a handful of early season races. The No. 54 team arrives at Las Vegas third in the owner standings, 16 points behind the leading No. 16 car for Kaulig Racing.

Adding to the excitement for Gibbs this weekend is another chance to drive the No. 54 Supra featuring the colors of Interstate Batteries, as JGR’s founding sponsor returns for the second time this year with the next generation of the Gibbs family behind the wheel after he drove it during Throwback Weekend at Darlington back in May. For JGR and Interstate Batteries, this weekend continues the 2021 celebration of their 30th anniversary together.

In addition to the Cup Series history of Interstate Batteries, the soon-to-be 19-year-old Gibbs has joined several other drivers who have made Xfinity Series starts for JGR’s founding partner, including Busch, Hamlin, Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Erik Jones, Elliott Sadler, and Daniel Suarez.

While it’s only the 15th Xfinity Series race of the season for Gibbs, the start of his career has been impressive, to say the least. He won in his very first start on the Daytona road course back in February, then backed it up with a runner-up finish in his second start at Phoenix Raceway. Two more victories would come this season for the young driver – at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May and last month at Watkins Glen (N.Y) International.

While Gibbs is set to compete in 18 total Xfinity Series races in 2021, he is competing fulltime in the ARCA Menards Series, where he is first in points and has won at Phoenix, Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Toledo (Ohio) Speedway, Charlotte, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Iowa Speedway in Newton, Winchester (Ind.) Speedway, Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, The Milwaukee Mile, and Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. His 10 ARCA wins are just two short of Tim Steele’s modern-era single-season record of 12 wins in 1997. Gibbs has 18 ARCA victories in all and is tied for 14th on the all-time series wins list with Ken Schrader.

So as Gibbs heads west to Las Vegas for the first time, he’ll not only focus on trying to get his Interstate Batteries Toyota Supra to victory lane for the fourth time, he’ll look to kick off the team’s playoff-within-the-playoffs run in style with JGR’s founding partner riding along.

What are your thoughts heading to Las Vegas to race there for the first time?

“I’m looking forward to racing at Las Vegas and it’s another new track for me. It’s great to have Interstate Batteries on the car. They have such a longstanding relationship with JGR and the Gibbs family. They are our founding sponsor. So I’m looking forward to having a great race at Las Vegas and hopefully putting them in victory lane. We’ve run well at the mile-and-a-half tracks and we won at Charlotte, so we should be good this weekend. Chris Gayle (crew chief) and the 54 boys will bring me a great Toyota Supra. Again, it’s just about learning each week and I’m hoping to do that this week at Las Vegas.”

How special is it to run for Interstate Batteries given its 30-year history with your family?

“Interstate Batteries means a lot to everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. You just see all the pictures and highlights of the 1993 Daytona 500 and how excited everyone was. Norm (Miller, chairman) and everyone at Interstate Batteries have been a big part of Joe Gibbs Racing over all these years. It’s just really cool how they’ve been able to grow with us as the team grew over the years. It’s really an honor to be able to run an Interstate Batteries car and I’m hoping we can make everyone proud this weekend at Las Vegas.”

You have Interstate Batteries returning to the No. 54 car this week. You personally have had a relationship with them over the years, working on the No. 18 car and some in the Xfinity Series, as well. What does that relationship mean to not only yourself, but the entire team?

“JGR has had such a longstanding relationship with Interstate Batteries, so it’s really cool to have them get involved with Ty. They’ve obviously been involved with the Gibbs family for a long time. It’s pretty cool to start off our playoff races with them in Vegas and Ty. It’s a really neat deal to transcend into the next generation for a company that has been with us for a long time.”

This will be the first time Ty has raced at Las Vegas. Can you talk about his progression this year since the Daytona road course, where he didn’t know anything about the place and then won, until now, where he’s trying to do the same at Las Vegas this weekend?

“It’s really unexpected. I don’t think any of us knew how good he was really going to be. He was really good at the road course right away but, beyond that, I’ve seen him become a little more racer savvy and learn how to race around other cars and not get himself in trouble. Richmond was a good example of him taking care of tires and learning that. It’s really cool to see that, and hopefully there’s a lot of that left. I’m hoping that this year’s playoffs, we hope to use that as a springboard for next year, where we could be doing it on the driver’s side.”

You are technically not in playoffs from a driver standpoint, but you are from the owner side. How important is that to you and the team?

“It is very important for us. I think, from the financial standpoint and still getting the championship, that’s all we can do. Not only from a money standpoint, but a pride and sentimental standpoint, it means a lot to be able to win the championship because it would mean we scored the most points this year than anybody. That’s what the No. 54 team is hanging their hats on and we would really like to get that championship.”

Ty Gibbs Notes of Interest:

● Quick Learner: To say Ty Gibbs is a quick learner would be quite the understatement. Gibbs made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut back in February at Daytona. He was impressive, to say the least, as he navigated several late restarts to lead twice for a total of 14 laps en route to a victory in his first series start.
● Three Times: Saturday’s Steakhouse Elite 200 will be Gibbs third career Xfinity Series start. In addition to his aforementioned win in his series debut, he followed it up last month at Martinsville by leading 28 laps and bringing home a solid fourth-place finish.
● A Title in Mind: While Gibbs is set to compete in 14 Xfinity Series races in 2021, Gibbs is competing fulltime in the ARCA Menards Series with his eyes set on bringing home that series title. So far this season, in just four races, Gibbs has three top-five finishes along with wins at Phoenix Raceway in March and Kansas Speedway in Kansas City this past weekend.

KENNINGTON LOOKING TO TAKE CASTROL EDGE DODGE TO VICTORY LANE

September 22, 2021. This weekend DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team return to familiar territory, Kennington’s home track of Delaware Speedway just outside London, Ontario. Beginning Friday and wrapping up Sunday the NASCAR Pinty’s Series will stage an unprecedented three races during one weekend to wrap up the 2021 season.

Kennington has scored three previous victories in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge at Delaware and he’s looking to add to that total this weekend. In fact, in six previous Pinty’s Series events at Delaware, Kennington has finished no worse than fourth and has been on the podium in five of the six races.

Trois-Rivieres (Quebec, Canada), September 22, 2021 – Louis-Philippe Dumoulin and the #47 WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare team are seeking their third NASCAR Pinty’s Series championship (2014, 2018) over this Friday and Sunday triple-header at the paved half-mile Delaware Speedway track near London, Ontario. Louis-Philippe Dumoulin is currently second in the title race, 11 points behind the leader.

Louis-Philippe Dumoulin has been able to stay in the lead group all season long, thanks to the hard work of the entire #47 WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare Team building a new bespoke oval car for him during the off-season and providing him with a competitive car every time out that has allowed him to score one win, three podiums, four top-five finishes and six top-10 finishes out of the seven races run so far this season. “We are aware of the importance of points. However, our strategy throughout the weekend will be to win the races. We are in “Go Mode” and aim to win every time out,” explained the driver of the #47 WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare car.

Delaware Speedway

The top oval track drivers have been battling it out since 1960 at Delaware Speedway and today’s best will be on hand for the season finale this weekend to determine the 2021 NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion.

“Delaware Speedway is a beautiful place. The track is bumpy with a worn surface, there’s a lot of history there. The relatively low banking and the straights make it easy to pass on the inside line while passing on the outside becomes possible late in the race depending on the ambient conditions. The track surface is warmer in the daytime practice sessions and becomes increasingly slippery in the evening races as the temperature drops, forcing changes in set-up from one race to the next,” concluded the veteran Quebec driver.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Announces Four-Car Team and All-New Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ for Dakar 2022

Toyota City, Japan, Sept 22, 2021 – (JCN Newswire) – TOYOTA GAZOO Racing will be entering a four-crew team in the upcoming Dakar Rally, which is set to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 2nd, 2022. As in 2021, the works team will be spear-headed by Nasser Al-Attiyah and navigator Mathieu Baumel. Giniel de Villiers will be partnered with navigator Dennis Murphy; Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings will return for their second Dakar; and Shameer Variawa will now be partnered with navigator Danie Stassen. The team will also be fielding an all-new Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+, which conforms to the updated regulations for the T1 category. The prototype car, in temporary raw carbon fibre finish, is currently undergoing testing in preparation for an official reveal later in 2021.

Building on the experience from Dakar 2021, the team will continue to field a mix of experienced specialists, such as Nasser and Giniel, while cementing Henk as an up-and-coming force in the sport. Shameer will be aiming to improve on his 21st position at the previous race.

Since finishing second at the 2021 edition of the race, 2019 winners Nasser (Qatar) and Mathieu (France) have powered to victory in the Andalucia Rally; as well as the Baja Spain Aragon. The pair, who won the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies three consecutive times, will be aiming to add a fourth Dakar victory to their resume in 2022. Giniel and Dennis, both from South Africa, have competed successfully in the South African Cross-Country Series (SACCS), which also serves as a testbed for the continued development of the Toyota Dakar Hilux. They were in the lead of the title chase after three of the seven rounds that make up the series.

With a crash on Stage 5 of Dakar 2021 forcing South Africans Henk and Brett to retire after posting highly competitive times on Stages 3 and 4, they will be keen to show their pace, and mix it up with the more experienced crews ahead of them. Henk’s Dakar debut drew global attention, and the young driver from Johannesburg, who has won the SACCS crown multiple times, will be looking to build significantly on that experience.

Finally, Shameer and Danie, also from South Africa, will complete the four-car team. Shameer, who has won multiple championships in South Africa, finished his first Dakar in 2021, but will now have Danie doing navigational duties. This will be Danie’s first Dakar, but he campaigns in the SACCS together with Shameer, so the two should find it easy to gel in the car.

Following TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s philosophy of “making ever-better cars”, the team has continued to refine the Hilux and the latest iteration will spearhead the team’s Dakar Rally campaign. For 2022, the team is developing a new version of the Toyota Dakar Hilux, based on the latest rules. The new Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ will share components with the race-proven Hilux that was first introduced in 2018, and won the race in 2019, but will feature a host of improvements including bigger running gear – tyres of 37 inches, up from 32 inches; together with a tread increase from 245mm to 320mm. The new car also has more suspension travel with the previous limit of 280mm now increased to 350mm.

Under the hood, the car is now equipped with a 3.5 litre twin-turbo powered petrol V6 engine, sourced from the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser 300, as used in the striking new GR-S version of the iconic vehicle. In standard form, the engine produces 305 kW of power at 5,200 rpm and 650 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm. However, in race trim those numbers are significantly higher.

With TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s WEC and WRC teams chalking up milestone victories in their disciplines, all eyes will be on the latest Toyota Hilux when it breaks cover towards the end of 2021. With the WEC team competing on tarmac, and the WRC team taking care of the rally action, the rally-raid team is a force to be reckoned with in the world’s most iconic cross-country motor race, the Dakar Rally.

Dakar 2022 will again be based solely in the Saudi Arabian desert, though the race follows a clockwise route this time. The race will start on January 2nd in the northern city of Ha’il, before traversing southward to the Empty Quarter. The rest day will be in the Saudi capital of Riyadh on January 8th, before the race heads south-westward to the finish in the city of Jeddah on January 14th.

The race will kick off with a prologue to determine the starting positions for Stage 1. Two looped stages will also feature on the route, though the details have yet to be announced by the organisers. Finally, the traditional Marathon Stage will see the crews race away from the main bivouac to an unsupported encampment for an overnight stop, before racing back to rejoin their technical crews at the main bivouac. This is a challenging part of the race, that often plays a major role in its outcome.

The final route for the Dakar 2022 is yet to be announced, but it is expected that the terrain will be similar to that encountered in 2020 and 2021.

GLENNN HOWARD MEMORIAL FOR USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY

(Perris, CA, September 21, 2021)  The Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars and The PAS Senior Sprint Cars return to “The Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing,” Perris Auto Speedway, this Saturday night for the “13th Annual Glennn Howard Memorial.”  Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00.  Be sure to load up all the neighborhood kids and bring them to Saturday’s event.  At intermission, all the drivers will bring their cars to the front straightaway for the on track autograph session.  In addition, they will be passing out free candy to all the kids in attendance.

The race honors Howard, who passed away in 2007.  In his decades on the Southern California racing scene, Howard was a driver, car owner, racing dad, entrepreneur, fabricator and official.  Even though it has been 14-years since he passed away, his fingerprint is still on the sport in Southern California today.  Through his So Cal Performance company which supplied drivers with everything they needed to compete, he virtually knew everyone in the sport.  He was free with his knowledge of car setups, driving and race strategy to anyone who asked.  That made him a mentor to everyone and perhaps more important, he was everyone’s friend.  That is what makes this race very special to all the competitors.  

It was obvious that Howard had a lifelong love affair with the sport, and he wanted it to succeed.  In 1993, with the original CRA having issues, Howard and others founded another group named SCRA that fortunately kept traditional 410 sprint car racing alive in the west.  He was the original President of the new group and was instrumental when the current USAC/CRA was formed a little over a decade later in 2004.

“Glenn was a great man, who did everything he could to help anyone and everyone when it came to sprint car racing,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said.  “If anyone ever needed advice whether it was a driver, crew chief, race official or promoter, you could always go to Glenn and get his opinion on what one should do.  That made him respected by everyone to this day.  The sport sorely misses him and all that he offered.” 

All 12 running’s of the “Glenn Howard” have taken place on the famous Perris Auto Speedway clay surface.  However, like nearly everything else, the race was canceled due to COVID in 2020.  When last contested in 2019, Austin Williams won the race for the second time. Recently, the Corona, California driver won the last race in the USAC/CRA Series on September 6 at the Petaluma Speedway.  He comes into Saturday night third in the USAC/CRA standings.  Concord, California’s Damion Gardner leads all drivers with four “Glenn Howard” wins.  The only other driver with more than one win in the event is Nic Faas, who currently has put his racing career on pause.

Another driver among the favorites for the win on Saturday is Garden Grove, California’s Brody Roa.  The veteran driver has already won two prestigious races at The PAS this year – the “Salute To Indy” and “California Racer’s Hall of Fame Night” – and comes into Saturday second in the standings, 44-points behind seven-time series champion Gardner.  The longtime rivalry between Roa and Gardner is legendary around the sport, and it reached the boiling point once again after the finale at the “Louie Vermeil Classic” at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on September 6th. 

“Rivalries have been a part of racing since the beginning,” Kazarian stated.  “They always have been and always will be a part of the sport.  In the case of Damion Gardner and Brody Roa, it is the familiar rivalry in racing when two top drivers meet.  They are both very good drivers.  While the personalities of the two are polar opposites, they are both extremely competitive.  They each have good equipment and a tremendous will to win races and championships.  A few things have happened between them over the years and every so often it boils over.  Situations like this are inevitable when you have the competitive nature of sprint car racing.  They both have a lot of fans that think their guy wears the white hat while the other guy wears a black hat.  Rivalries keep things interesting.” 

In addition to the USAC/CRA portion of the show, The PAS Senior Sprint Series will be contesting it’s next to last race of the 2021 season.  El Segundo’s Tyler Hatzikian has a narrow six-point advantage over Ed Schwarz of Santa Fe Springs heading into Saturday’s race.  Anaheim’s Dale Gamer is third and is followed by Greg Badgwell of Tustin and Arizona’s Richard McCormick.

● Last weekend at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Aric Almirola battled for the playoff cutoff position for the entirety of the race but came just two points short. He started the race three points ahead of the cutoff line. The No. 10 team overcame an oil-line leak halfway through the race. How can you look back on this season and the playoff run?

“I mean, our season as a whole was not what we wanted with all of the bad luck and performance. We went to Loudon and pulled out a win, which was awesome, and then just kind of had a renewed sense of energy going into the playoffs and thought we were going to do everything we needed to do in the first round to transfer to the next round and, unfortunately, it didn’t pan out. I can’t blame it on Bristol. There were plenty of opportunities throughout the first two races where we gave up some points, as well, so I can find two points in a lot of different places. A badly timed caution at Darlington, a loose wheel at Richmond, and mechanical issues at Bristol put us right on the edge of advancing and we just didn’t have enough to get there, but I’m super proud of this team for never giving up on what has been one of the most challenging and character-building years of my career.”

What do you set your sights on now with seven races to go in the year?

“That’s what is so unique in our sport. We’re not competing for a championship, but we still have seven races left on the schedule to go out and show what we have. We saw it in 2019, where we had a really good car at Texas, but we weren’t in the playoffs. We led a lot of that race and came up second, so that’s what I look forward to. I look forward to still having a shot to win and trying to improve and learn tracks we’ll visit next year. Obviously, it will all be different with the Next Gen car, but you still go to these tracks just like any other in the season. We’re going to each track with the intent to run right there with the guys in the playoffs and compete for a position inside the top-10 in points by the end of the season.”
