FLOWDYNAMICS RACING HEADS TO SILVER DOLLAR AND PETALUMA SPEEDWAYS ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Logan Williams photo courtesy of Logan Williams.

(Ontario, CA, September 1, 2021) Flowdynamics Racing has a busy Labor Day weekend on tap as it hits the trail to contest the next three rounds of competition in the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. Drivers Matt McCarthy and Logan Williams will be on the track for two nights, Saturday and Sunday, at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. One night later the team will make its way to the Petaluma Speedway for the annual USAC/CRA race on the track located just north of the Bay Area.

The Saturday and Sunday portion of the trip will see the teammates competing in the “13th Annual Louis Vermeil Classic.” This weekend will mark the first year the race has been held anywhere but the huge ½ mile Calistoga Speedway. Instead at Chico, the Flowdynamics duo will be making a rare appearance on a ¼ mile banked clay oval track. Both Williams and McCarthy will be looking to add one of the coveted “Louie” sculpted trophies to the mantelpiece in their houses from the Chico races. The following night at Petaluma, they will return to a more familiar 3/8 of a mile dirt oval. The series, which is in its 17th year of operation, will be making it’s only visit to each of the tracks in 2021.

Heading into the three days of racing, McCarthy is 11th in the season long championship standings. However, he is only 48-points out of seventh. Before the last race at Perris Auto Speedway on August 21st, the 2017 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year had reeled off three straight top 10 finishes. In addition, he won his first ever 410 sprint car main event at an open show at the Barona Speedway on August 7th. Unfortunately, a crash early in the Perris main event knocked the Riverside, California resident out of the race with a 20th place finish.

Williams, who resides in Yorba Linda, California, is only two spots and 39-points behind his Flowdynamics teammate. The 2013 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion and 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year has raced seven USAC/CRA races in this, his comeback season. In those seven races he has placed in the top 10 four times. The last time out at Perris in the “California Racer’s Hall of Fame Night,” he came home ninth in the 30-lap main event.

Fans can take in all three nights of this week’s action in person at both tracks.  Silver Dollar Speedway is located on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds at 2357 Fair Street, in Chico, California (95928).  The track website is http://www.silverdollarspeedway.com/ and the phone number is (530) 350-7275.  Petaluma Speedway is situated on the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds and Event Center in Petaluma.  The address is 100 Fairgrounds Drive, Petaluma, California 94952.  The track website is https://www.petaluma-speedway.com/ and the office phone number is (707) 763-RACE.

Spectator gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:30 in Chico.  At Petaluma, spectator gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00.

For fans who are unable to make the races in person, they can catch all the action live on Flo Racing.  Fans can sign up for the Flo PPV service at https://www.floracing.com/.

Both drivers will have shirts available in the pit area all three nights this weekend.

After this weekend’s races in Nor Cal, the Flowdynamics duo will be off until a return to Perris Auto Speedway on September 25th

McCarthy and Williams would like to thank the following sponsors for making the 2021 season possible. Flowdynamics Inc., JFK Design Build, Drink-Pac, Preferred Insulation, DRC Chassis, Kistler Racing and Benic Enterprises.

If you or your company would like to join forces with Flowdynamics Racing, phone John McCarthy at (909) 930-5522 or Email mailto:john@flodyinc.com.

How to Know When To Replace Your Car Tires

Photo by Robert Laursoo on Unsplash

Of all your vehicle components, your car tires deserve accolades for the amount of abuse that they take. They are, after all, the only part of your vehicle that touches the road, and constantly too. Tires are the most commonly replaced car part, with approximately 200 million passenger tire replacements being bought annually in the US alone, according to Canada Custom Autoworks, a Calgary tire repair shop. Despite this, many people still don’t know what to look for in a damaged tire or when their tires need to be replaced, leading to excessive maintenance costs and, even worse, a multitude of road accidents. If you think your tires need to be replaced but may be a little unsure, here are a few things you can look out for.

Cracking

The weather can play havoc on your tires since they are regularly exposed to heat, cold, and water, and these can be extreme. Although designed to be durable, your tires are made of rubber and will start showing signs of weathering. Regular checks are imperative; one sign to look out for is cracking between your sidewall and tread blocks. These fine cracks will eventually expose the inner material of your tires and create even greater damage, so they should be replaced as soon as these cracks are discovered.

Depth of Tread

Your tire tread affects your traction and is incredibly important, especially in wet conditions. Hydroplaning occurs when your tire tread is too low, and your tire is unable to divert water from the road surface away from the underneath of your tire, resulting in your car losing control. Any tire tread below 0.32 inches or 0.16 cm is unsafe and illegal in most countries. An easy way to check your tread is to see if the tread bar on your tire is flush with the tread. Other methods of checking include inserting a penny in the center of the tread at the thickest part of the tire, with Lincoln facing you. If you see the very top of Lincoln’s head, your tire needs immediate replacement.

Bulges

Although it was unavoidable, hitting that nasty pothole in the road was more painful for your car than it was for you. Hitting potholes and curbs are cited as the main reasons behind bulges in your tires, although these are uncommonly also caused by manufacturer faults. An air pocket is created as the air gets between the inner liner of your tire and the outer material layer and can cause serious damage and injury if not detected and treated immediately. It is vital that you check your vehicle after every impact, regardless of how small, and change that tire as soon as possible.

Age

How many years will my tires last? This is an extremely common question for which there is no definitive answer. Your tires are designed to last for a certain amount of mileage. This is, however, dependent on many factors, such as regular maintenance, tire pressure checks, wheel balancing, and alignment and rotation. It is unlikely that most tires will reach the manufacturer’s replacement age without ever being changed. Should this happen, there is a rule of thumb regarding the age of your tires that can be used as a guide, and this should be followed even if your tire tread is good and your tire appears to be in good condition. If your tires are between 5 and 10 years old, they must be replaced as soon as possible. This period may differ between manufacturers, so it will benefit you to check with yours to make sure.

Bulges, low treads, and cracking are leading causes of vehicle damage and, sadly, injury. Regular maintenance is imperative to ensure the good overall performance of your tires and maintain your safety. Understanding how factors such as tire pressure, wheel balancing, and alignment affect the quality of your tires is also key to extending the life of your tires. These checks are simple to carry out and can also be done by your local mechanic at very reasonable rates, and along with this, your mechanic can detect any other problems that you may not see.

For those seeking professional assistance or planning to handle tire maintenance themselves, the equipment from John Bean can offer reliable, high-quality solutions.

What To Do When Your Car Unexpectedly Breaks Down

Dealing with an unexpected car breakdown on the road could be a frustrating and scary experience. This is especially true if you don’t know what to do and you’re in an unfamiliar area. Luckily, there are ways that could help you prepare for breakdowns before they happen.

Keep reading this article to learn more about what to do when your car unexpectedly breaks down on the road.

  1. Remain Calm

With a car breakdown, panicking is something you shouldn’t do during this situation. Panicking could affect your judgment, which would prevent you from being in control of the situation. For this reason, you should remain calm so you could think of how you could get a handle on the situation. By doing so, you could avoid any bumps on the road that could put you, your family, and your vehicle in danger.

  1. Get Off The Road To Stay Safe

During a breakdown, one important thing to do is get off the road and keep away from traffic. You could do this by gently taking your foot off the accelerator and never suddenly stepping on the brake pedal to avoid more trouble. Once it’s done, you need to make sure to bring the vehicle toward the free side of the road.

After pulling your car off the road, the next step to take is to ensure your safety while figuring out your next course of action. To stay safe, you must keep the following things in mind:

  • Turn on the emergency blinkers
  • Pop the hood of your car
  • Place reflective triangles or cones, if you have them in your trunk
  • Turn on your vehicle’s lights if you have no markers
  1. Call For Help

If you think you couldn’t do something about the unexpected breakdown, then it’s best to call for help. For instance, you could call an emergency tow company on your phone or google ‘towing near me’ to quickly find a towing service online. These service providers could help you take your broken-down vehicle from your current location to your home or mechanic, depending on your personal circumstances.

Another option to consider when your car unexpectedly breaks down is to seek for roadside assistance. You could do this by calling the helpline number of your particular area or using an app. If you believe your car insurance offers roadside assistance, don’t hesitate to contact them to see if they could quickly respond to your situation.

Moreover, if you have no idea who to call for help, you could always ask assistance from the nearest police department to help you out.

  1. Stay In Your Vehicle

When dealing with your car malfunctioning on the road, authorities advise people to stay in their vehicles for safety reasons. This is especially true if you’re in an unfamiliar place, waiting for help. Even if you’ve safely maneuvered your car on the shoulder, avoid getting out of the vehicle to check for any damage.

In case you need to get out of the car, make sure the road is completely clear. Also, if the car was stopped on the right side of the road, it’d be much safer to get out through the passenger-side door. That way, you could protect yourself from road accidents while dealing with a car breakdown.

  1. Get Your Vehicle Checked By A Mechanic

Again, experiencing a car breakdown could be very devastating, especially if you have no idea what went wrong with your vehicle. Even if you’ve followed maintenance tips online to keep your car in running order, there are other causes of breakdowns on the road. These could include flat or faulty batteries, damaged tires and wheels, engine oil problems, alternator failures, starter motor issues, overheating, and many more.

However, unless you’re a car expert, you probably need a mechanic to help you identify the problem and fix it while you’re on the road. When you call for a reliable mechanic, you needn’t worry about your car getting stranded on the road. Just google ‘an experienced mobile mechanic near me’ on your web browser, and you could have them on your location as soon as possible.

Takeaway

Indeed, facing an unexpected car breakdown on the road could be stressful and have an adverse impact on your life. However, while this situation is seldom unavoidable, there are ways that could help you prepare for the unexpected.

If your car unexpectedly breaks down, just remember the things discussed in this post from start to finish. Not only could you avoid any more problems, but you’ll keep yourself and your car safe on the road while fixing the problem.

Kimi Räikkönen Announces Resignation from Formula 1

Former F1 world champion (in 2007) and the most successful Finnish driver in Formula One, Kimi Räikkönen, has announced his resignation at the end of the season ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. With this announcement, he ends two decades of presence at grand prices around the world and among the Vwin betting odds, drizzled with over 100 podium finishes and almost two dozen victories.

Kimi Räikkönen

Born in Espoo, Finland, Räikkönen has a karting background that he started at the age of 10. At the age of 15, he participated in his first race outside of Finland – while racing in Monaco, his steering wheel broke but he continued to go. After a series of wins at karting, he made the transition to Formula 1 in 2001, after a successful test with the Sauber Formula One team in September 2000.

His first year in F1 was pretty successful – he finished 10th in the World Drivers Championship with 9 points gathered throughout the season. In 2002, he joined the West McLaren Mercedes team (later renamed to Team McLaren Mercedes), improving his results over the years – this partnership brought him his first victories, and two runner-up positions in the WDC. His first year with the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro was his most successful, though – driving a race car powered by the Ferrari 056 2.4 V8 engine he was able to win the World Championship, gathering 110 points throughout the season.

Räikkönen left the F1 briefly – in 2010 and 2011, he raced in the World Rally Championship and made a short visit to NASCAR – before returning to the greatest show on Earth, joining the Lotus F1 Team in 2012. In 2014, he returned to Scuderia Ferrari (no Marlboro at the time), where he stayed until 2018. Since 2019, he’s been racing with Alfa Romeo Racing – his last three seasons were not as successful as his previous ones, though. This might be part of the reason why he announced his retirement this year.

“This is it”

“This is it. This will be my last season in Formula 1. This is a decision I did during last winter. It was not an easy decision but after this season it is time for new things,” he wrote on his Instagram. “Even though the season is still on, I want to thank my family, all my teams, everyone involved in my racing career, and especially all of you great fans that have been rooting for me all this time. Formula 1 might come to an end for me but there is a lot more in life that I want to experience and enjoy. See you around after all of this! Sincerely Kimi”

All proceeds will go to the Chase Elliott Foundation to benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s.

LET THE PLAYOFFS BEGIN: The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs kick off this weekend at historic Darlington Raceway. For the sixth consecutive year, Elliott is officially part of the playoff field. He and the No. 9 team will look to defend their 2020 championship after dominating the playoffs last season. In 2016, he became the youngest driver to make his first playoff start at 20 years, 9 months, 21 days, and last season he advanced to the Round of 8 for the third consecutive year. In his 50 playoff starts, Elliott has garnered six wins, 21 top-five finishes, 30 top-10s and 1,463 laps led. The driver of the No. 9 enters this season’s playoffs with 21 playoff points (his most ever) and has won three of the last five playoff races.

IN THE BOOKS: As the regular season came to a close last weekend at Daytona International Speedway, Elliott continued to stack up career bests in runner-up results (five), top-five finishes (11) and top-10s (16). Through 26 races, his two wins are tied for a personal best.

‘TOO TOUGH TO TAME’ STATS: Elliott is set to make his 10th Cup Series start at Darlington Raceway this weekend. In his previous races at the 1.366-mile track, he has two top-five finishes, four top-10s and led 151 laps. Elliott also has three NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the South Carolina venue, where he won in his 2014 track debut. He is one of only four drivers to win at Darlington in their first race there.

600 STARTS: This weekend at Darlington, No. 9 team crew chief Alan Gustafson will call his 600th career Cup Series race. In his previous 599 starts as a crew chief, he has called the shots for five different drivers, collecting one championship, 33 wins, 172 top-five finishes, 297 top-10s and 9,308 laps led.

GUSTAFSON AT ‘THE LADY IN BLACK’: Gustafson has called 20 Cup Series races at Darlington. Leading five different drivers, he’s earned one win, four top-five results and eight top-10s. Gustafson’s Darlington win came in 2009 with veteran Mark Martin, the second-oldest driver (50 years, 4 months) to win at the track.

GUSTAFSON’S PLAYOFF PERFORMANCE: The crew chief of the No. 9 has the most playoff appearances by an active crew chief (14) and second-most all time behind only Hendrick Motorsports’ vice president of competition Chad Knaus (17). The 46-year-old also has the second-most wins in playoff races all time (12) and the most of active crew chiefs.

24 WILLIAM BYRON
Age: 23 (Nov. 29, 1997)
Hometown: Charlotte, North Carolina
Resides: Charlotte, North Carolina
Crew Chief: Rudy Fugle
Standings: 8th

No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE

PLAYOFF CONTENDER: With the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs set to kick off this Sunday, this will be William Byron’s third appearance in the 10-race battle for the championship. The driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE heads into this year’s playoffs seeded in the eighth position. In the upcoming 10 races, the Cup Series has run on seven of those tracks already this year, and Byron is the only driver to have finished inside the top seven in each of those events.

BEST YEAR YET: With only 10 races left in the 2021 Cup Series season, Byron is continuing to have a career-best season at the highest level of competition in the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet. So far, Byron has collected one win (Homestead-Miami Speedway), two pole awards (Road America and Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course – the most by a driver this season), nine top-five finishes and 16 top-10s (tied for the third-most by a driver this season) all while leading 276 laps and collecting three stage wins. In his Cup career, these are the most top-five finishes, top-10s, laps led and stage wins the 23-year-old driver has earned in a single season.

DARLINGTON DEETS: With six previous Cup Series starts at Darlington Raceway, Byron is looking to capitalize on his previously strong showings at the South Carolina track this Sunday. Despite running well early on, Byron’s results in his first four starts at the 1.366-mile track don’t accurately represent the strength he had shown. However, in his last two starts at “The Lady in Black,” Byron has started within the top five both times and secured a fifth-place result in the fall of 2020 and a fourth-place result earlier this season in May. Byron also has one NASCAR Xfinity Series start at the southern track where he qualified sixth and raced to a fifth-place result.

THE FUGLE FILES: When the Cup Series returns to Darlington on Sunday, it will mark the second trip to the South Carolina track for crew chief Rudy Fugle at the top level of NASCAR. Earlier this season, Fugle called the shots for Byron at Darlington, starting fifth before racing their way to a fourth-place result. Prior to this season, Fugle had only three previous starts at Darlington Raceway – two in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and one in the Xfinity Series.

ALL ABOUT AXALTA: For the first race of the Round of 16, Byron will climb behind the wheel of the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE for Sunday’s race at Darlington Raceway. Now in its 29th year of partnership with Hendrick Motorsports, Axalta will return as primary partner on Byron’s No. 24 for 14 races in 2021. For a better look at Byron’s No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, click here.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE OF MIND: While Landon Walker, the fueler on the No. 24 team, hails from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, he also has significant ties to the southernmost Carolina state, having played football at Clemson University. The former college offensive tackle earned a scholarship to Clemson in 2007 after being named an All-American offensive lineman at East Wilkes High School. While playing at Clemson, Walker recorded 3,131 snaps with 49 starts at tackle through four seasons. In 2011, Walker was named team captain, the same year Clemson went on to win the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Walker was then recruited by Hendrick Motorsports in 2012 and earned a position as the starting fueler for the former No. 5 (now No. 24) team in 2015.

‘DESI9N TO DRIVE’: This year, Byron will take part in the Chase Elliott Foundation’s “DESI9N TO DRIVE” shoe program during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Benefitting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Byron and his Hendrick Motorsports teammates selected racing shoe designs created by patients of Children’s to wear for Sunday’s race at Darlington. Byron will sport 6-year-old Branson Gibby’s design on his racing shoes, which feature bright colors throughout the design. After the race, the race-worn shoes will be signed by Byron and auctioned off on the NASCAR Foundation online auction site starting on Thurs., Sept. 2 and running though Wed., Sept. 8. All of the proceeds will goto the Chase Elliott Foundation to benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s.

48 Alex Bowman
Age: 28 (April 25, 1993)
Hometown: Tucson, Arizona
Resides: Concord, North Carolina
Crew Chief: Greg Ives
Standings: 6th

No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE

REGULAR-SEASON FINALE RESULTS: Saturday night’s event at Daytona International Speedway marked the final event in the 2021 regular season. In an action-packed 400-mile event, Bowman made it through multiple on-track incidents with minor damage to finish the event seventh. This was Bowman’s third top-10 result at the 2.5-mile venue and 13th top-10 finish this season. After 26 events in the regular season, the 28-year-old captured three wins (career high), six top-five results, 13 top-10s and one pole award (DAYTONA 500). He has won two of the last nine oval events and has seven top-10 results in that span. Bowman’s six top-five finishes are also tied for the 10th most this season among active drivers. The Ally driver has both the 11th-best average running position (12.68) and finishing position (14.4) this season. He has run 1,364 laps inside the top five and 2,786 laps inside the top 10, which ranks 11th overall.

10 TO GO: The seventh-year NASCAR Cup Series driver will make his fourth appearance in the playoffs following his three wins this season. Bowman has raced his way into the Round of 12 the last three years and this is the third season where he has clinched a spot in the playoffs based on a victory. In 2019, the team earned a playoff position after capturing the victory at Chicagoland Speedway and in 2020 following his win at Auto Club Speedway. Bowman has claimed a spot in the NCS playoffs all four years that he has been with Hendrick Motorsports and enters the Round of 16 event at Darlington in the sixth spot, 10 markers above the cut line.

BOWMAN IS ‘TOO TOUGH’: Bowman has eight previous starts in the Cup Series at Darlington Raceway. His best finish of second came in May last season when the sport returned after a two-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic. Bowman led for 41 laps after rolling off second, earning the second-most points in the event. During the three races held at the 1.366-mile venue in 2020, Bowman captured the second-most stage points (39) and led the sixth-most laps (42) among active drivers. Bowman has one start at Darlington in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2013 where he finished 17th after 147 laps.

IVES IN DARLINGTON: For the 10th time in his Cup Series career, Greg Ives will call the shots at Darlington Raceway for the No. 48 Ally team. The Bark River, Michigan, native’s best finish at the venue came in the first May event at the track last season when Bowman crossed the line second after leading 41 laps. Ives’ drivers have completed 99.7% of the total laps at Darlington and have one top-five finish and three top-10s at the facility. He was also the crew chief for Chase Elliott in the Xfinity Series in 2014 when the team captured the victory after leading 52 laps. From 2006-2012, Ives was a race engineer for the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team. During that time, he was a part of one Cup Series win (2012) and four top-five finishes at Darlington.

NEW KICKS: During this weekend’s event at Darlington, Bowman will be sporting some new shoes. The Chase Elliott Foundation is supporting the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta through the “DESI9N TO DRIVE” shoe program. The shoes, designed by 8-year-old Elise Sullens, will be autographed by Bowman and auctioned off by the Chase Elliott Foundation after the race. The auction will run from Sept. 2 to Sept. 8 and can be found on the NASCAR Foundation’s auction page on eBay. All proceeds will go to the Chase Elliott Foundation to benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s.

PIT ROAD STATS: Going into the first race of the playoffs, the No. 48 pit crew continues to sit fifth for the fastest four-tire pit stop average in the Cup Series with a time of 13.92 seconds. The team had the fastest single stop at Dover International Speedway (12.18 seconds) on May 16 and had the third-fastest stop at Atlanta Motor Speedway (12.25 seconds) on July 11. The No. 48 pit crew includes fueler Jacob Conley, tire carrier Allen Stallings, jackman Dustin Lineback, and tire changers Scott Brzozowski (front) and Devin DelRicco (rear).

CLEAR THE SHELTERS: The “Clear the Shelters” nationwide campaign is underway and will go through Sept. 18. The NBC/Telemundo initiative rolled out last week and WCNC, the local Charlotte, North Carolina, NBC station, teamed up with Bowman and No. 48 team partner Ally for the 2021 campaign to get as many pets adopted from local shelters. On Sept. 18, all adoption fees will either be waived or discounted with the goal to clear out the 10 shelters that are participating in the Charlotte area. Learn more here.

IT’S PLAYOFF TIME: Sunday’s event at Darlington Raceway will mark the first of 10 NASCAR Cup Series playoff races in 2021. Hendrick Motorsports has 47 playoff wins (28%) since the introduction of the system in 2004, more than any other organization. The team has won playoff races with seven different drivers (the most), has earned eight of the 17 championships in the playoff era (47%) and has won playoff races in a record 16 different seasons.

RISING TO THE OCCASION: Drivers Jimmie Johnson (29 wins), Jeff Gordon (seven), Chase Elliott (six), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (two), Mark Martin, Kyle Busch and Brian Vickers have all won NASCAR Cup Series playoff races for car owner Rick Hendrick.

UNTAMED: Hendrick Motorsports has posted a track record 14 NASCAR Cup Series wins at Darlington Raceway, including 11 in the prestigious Southern 500 – more than any other team. The organization has sent a record six different drivers to victory lane at the track: Gordon (seven wins), Johnson (three), Tim Richmond, Ricky Rudd, Terry Labonte and Martin.

FIRST-ROUND PICKS: Hendrick Motorsports has recorded double-digit victory totals at each track in the first round of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs: Darlington (14 wins), Richmond Raceway (11) and Bristol Motor Speedway (11).

FOUR-FOR-FOUR: For the record-tying fourth time, all four Hendrick Motorsports teams have earned berths in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. 2021 marks the record-extending 16th consecutive season with at least two of the organization’s drivers competing in the post-season and the record 14th time at least three of its teams have qualified.

MOMENTUM: Over the last 14 NASCAR Cup Series points-paying races, Hendrick Motorsports has won eight times and is the only organization to go to victory lane more than twice.

QUOTABLE /

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on Darlington and the start of the playoffs: “This is the best opportunity I’ve had to win a championship. There’s nothing easy about Darlington. It’s tough because we run so close to the wall and it’s so tough getting to pit road. It’s a crown jewel that we all want to win, and it means even more since it starts off the playoffs.”

Cliff Daniels, crew chief of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on point standings affecting race strategy: “I have not looked at points (during the races) all year – I did not look at the points even once (last) Saturday night at Daytona. If we do our jobs correctly, the points should take care of themselves.”

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on working with kids from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on DESI9N TO DRIVE: “The program is a really big deal to me, personally. I don’t think all of these kids watch NASCAR every weekend, so we have that opportunity to introduce some of them to it and allow their ideas and designs to come to life. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about to me. It’s about giving them some excitement, something to look forward to whether they watch racing or not. It doesn’t matter. If it gives them three hours of excitement or five minutes of excitement, that is a win, in my opinion. Obviously, the proceeds of the auction items benefit Children’s, which is bettering their program. It’s all for a great cause. For the kids specifically, it’s just about their imagination and ideas coming to life.”

Elliott on kicking off the playoffs at Darlington: “We are super excited for Darlington this weekend. These next three weeks are exciting races. Three, I feel like, really cool racetracks with fun environments for us. It’s getting to be that time of year. Fall is an exciting time of year for a lot of things around sports and our season is getting down to it, as well. We are just excited to get going. It’s hard to believe we are 26 weeks in. It doesn’t really seem like it, but here we are starting another playoffs and heading into the final 10 of the year. It goes by fast, but over two months of racing is still a long time. They will click off and you’ll get in certain moments that you might like, some you might not like, and we’ll make the most of them all.”

Elliott on crew chief Alan Gustafson: “He has really seen a lot through his career and I feel like people sometimes don’t realize that and how much experience he does have. I am certainly thankful for that. He does a fantastic job with just keeping our team super levelheaded and really just riding the waves, both the ups and the downs, kind of with the same mentality. He does a great job of not only exemplifying that but making sure the rest of us understand that that’s important, too.”

Alan Gustafson, crew chief of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on making his 600th Cup start as a crew chief: “That’s a lot of races. Surviving 600 races is a pretty big feat in itself. I’m certainly honored to be able to do what I do. I’ve been able to work with some great people and that’s the biggest thing that stands out to me – those relationships and working through, you know, like you mentioned, the ups and downs, the successes and the failures together. Overcoming that, the relationships you form – that, to me at this point of my career, is the sweetest thing about victory – is just being able to do that with people you care about and work with and see them enjoy it. That’s what really motivates me and fuels me and gets me excited. It’s crazy; it’s a big number, so I feel super fortunate. Hopefully, I can get quite a few more.”

Gustafson on the pressure of the playoffs: “It is a little daunting, but I really enjoy it. This time of the year, I enjoy that feeling or pressure, however you want to describe it, of the urgency and finality of if you don’t get it done. I like that. It’s something that I enjoy and feel like our team thrives in. We are ready to do it. The past is the past and all the talk about the future is really kind of pointless. It’s just doing what you have to do and that’s what we need to focus on. Focus on what we can control and if we do that, we will be in great shape.”

Gustafson’s mindset heading into 14th career playoffs: “My mind set is just to get the team and everybody operating at their maximum potential. You got to be operating at 100%. I feel we got the team, the car, the sponsors. We got what we need to do it; we just have to make sure that everybody is operating at their maximum ability. If we do that, I feel very confident that we can compete with anybody. That’s it and peaking at the right time and all those things you hear from Chase, that’s what it’s about. Just getting everything working to see what’s optimal. (We’re) trying to get that.”

William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on racing at Darlington for the first race of the playoffs: “Darlington is a track that has a lot of character. I feel like you really have to drive your car to its limit all while understanding the grip and limit of your tires. You can’t exceed that level every lap. You have to stay within a certain limit. I think that is a factor at just about every track, but it’s really magnified at Darlington. Any time the drivers are challenged like they are at Darlington, it brings out the desire and passion within all of us. It just makes it that more intense when it’s kicking off the most intense part of our season with the playoffs. It’s definitely a cool race if you can win it track-wise but also because it sets the tone for how the next nine races go.”

Rudy Fugle, crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on what it will take to be successful in the playoffs: “Daytona was a tough one for us, just because we had a car that could have won and the extra playoff points would have been nice. Unfortunately, preparation doesn’t always equal results, but you can’t get results without the preparation. While we’ve been preparing every week like we’ve already started the playoffs, we’re resetting for the start of the Round of 16 this weekend. The playoffs are a long, hard-fought war, but it starts with small battles. Our team has had the speed all year; we just need to execute and put ourselves in the best position to keep moving forward and get through the rounds. Obviously, the goal is to make it to the final four at Phoenix, but we need to win the small battles along the way to ensure we get there. This team is fully capable of doing that and it starts this weekend at Darlington.”

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on the momentum the team has going into Darlington: “Last year, we had some rough weeks during the summer but showed up in the playoffs strong each and every week. I believe we have the ability to repeat that and go further in the playoffs this year. Hendrick Motorsports has a lot of momentum right now as an organization and the No. 48 team is bringing some fast Ally Camaros to the track every week. Darlington is a place where we have had good results in the past, and I think it is one of three or four in the playoffs that suits our program.”

Greg Ives, crew chief of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, on bringing the energy from last season’s playoff run to this year: “I feel like having three wins in the first 26 races is definitely marked for a good season. You can check off some boxes like getting a win, getting a pole and making the playoffs. Obviously, there are a couple of races that we would want to take back and think we could have run better at. Most teams, if not all teams, find the one or two things that didn’t go right during certain races and focus on improving those going into the playoffs. We had a great playoff run last year and we are going to try to pull from that experience going into the playoffs this year.”

Ives’ thoughts on how the repave will affect Sunday’s race: “The repave at Darlington in turn two is going to provide some challenges for teams just because we don’t know how it will affect the tire wear. Going to a track that has been repaved typically doesn’t wear tires as much and has a tendency to run edgy free versus more of a slidable free. You also tend to run a little faster, for sure. It is going to be fun and exciting to figure out on Sunday. There are some things that we can look at doing differently as a team with the setup, but ultimately the teams and drivers that adapt quickly will be successful with it.”

“As a team, we head to Darlington with some momentum and confidence after our performance at World Wide Technology Raceway a couple of weeks ago. It really was a strong race for our team. I really wanted a couple of spots better, but we made great progression throughout the race and earned a top-20 finish.

“That is definitely something to build on for this Sunday.”

The effort was his fifth top-20 finish of the 2021 NCWTS season and his best result since finishing ninth at Knoxville Raceway in July.

To The Point(s): Entering Darlington, Fogleman sits 20th in the championship standings with 196 points earned. Fogleman overtook Christian Eckes to enter the top-20 and stands 12 points behind Chase Purdy for 19th.

Tate Fogleman Pre-Race Quotes:

On Darlington: “This weekend is a chance at redemption for our Young’s Motorsports team. We had such a good truck in the spring but unfortunately with that huge wreck at the front with the leaders on the restart, we found ourselves a victim of circumstances and left with a lousy finish.

“Sunday will be my third start at Darlington, and I find myself getting better there with every lap turned. Ryan did a great job setting up the truck in May, so we will build off that and see if we can build off our Gateway finish with another top-15 run this weekend with our No. 12 DogeCola Chevrolet Silverado.”

On 2021 Season: “I’m proud of everyone on this Young’s Motorsports team – we are finally going in the right direction.

“Start to finish – Gateway was a lot of fun and things seemed to go our way. We are certainly capable of finishing in the top-15 on a weekly basis, so that’s our goal not only this weekend at Darlington but for the rest of the 2021 season.”

Boyd’s No. 20 Hans Wiemann Chevrolet Silverado charged to inside the top-20 in the closing laps of Stage 3.

A late-race restart, however, allowed Boyd to gain even more positions on the track at his hometown race, taking the checkered flag in 16th, second in class of the Young’s Motorsports team.

The impressive effort by Boyd is his first top-20 finish since finishing 13th in the season-opening race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February.

To The Point(s): Entering Darlington, Boyd sits 25th in the championship standings.

57 points separate Boyd from 20th in the championship standings currently held by teammate Tate Fogleman with six races remaining this season.

Young’s Motorsports’ No. 20 team also secures 35th in the NCWTS owner standings.

Chasing That W: Boyd is eyeing his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory for himself and Young’s Motorsports.

In 2019 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Boyd pulled an upset during the Truck Series Playoffs by winning the Sugarland Shines 250 at the 2.66-mile superspeedway edging Todd Gilliland by 0.027 seconds.

Truck Series Rundown: In five years of Truck Series competition, Boyd has 60 career Truck Series starts with one win, two top-five and two top-10 finishes and a championship best of 17th in 2019.

Calling the Shots: Guiding Boyd as crew chief of the No. 20 Dan-O’s Seasoning Chevrolet Silverado is veteran crew chief Joe Lax.

He will crew chief his 71st NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Sunday. In his previous 70 races, he has one pole and six top-10 finishes to his resume.

This weekend marks his fourth race as crew chief at the track dubbed Too Tough To Tame.

Spencer Boyd Pre-Race Quotes:

On Darlington: “Glad to be back at the track this weekend and hope we can have a solid finish with our No. 20 Dan-O’s Chevrolet Silverado.”

On Dan-O’s Seasoning Partnership: “I use Dan-O’s on a weekly basis. My nutritionist keeps my diet to a lot of chicken and fish. Thankfully Dan-O’s is low in sodium but big in flavor so my meals aren’t boring. I use it so much they even made a bottle with my face on it last year!”

Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

• With only three races to go in the NASCAR Xfinity Series regular season, Riley Herbst is riding a wave of consistency heading into the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 Saturday at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. After playing catch-up in the race for the playoffs for the majority of the season, the No. 98 Monster Energy team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) has a solid hold of the 12th and final playoff spot thanks to three consecutive top-10s. Herbst and Co. look to keep the momentum rolling at a track where SHR has won in the past. The team co-owned by NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart and Haas Automation founder Gene Haas has two Xfinity Series wins at Darlington – Cole Custer in August 2019 and Chase Briscoe in May 2020.
• The past five races have propelled Herbst from being outside of the playoff bubble to inside the top-12 cutoff to make the seven-race playoffs, which start Sept. 25 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After a 19th-place finish July 10 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Herbst was 13th in the standings, 54 points outside of the top-12 cutline. But after finishing 10th July 17 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, 13th Aug. 7 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, eighth Aug. 14 on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, seventh Aug. 21 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, and 10th last Friday at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Herbst gained a total of 122 points, erasing that 54-point deficit and replacing it with a 68-point margin over the top-12 cutoff. A win in these final three races of the regular season would lock Herbst into the playoffs, but the 22-year-old racer from Las Vegas can also point his way into championship contention by continuing his string of strong finishes through the regular-season finale Sept. 17 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
• Saturday’s race will mark Herbst’s fourth Xfinity Series start at Darlington. In his three previous Xfinity Series starts at the 1.366-mile oval, Herbst scored a top-10 and two top-20s. He earned a best finish of fourth in last year’s Labor Day weekend race.
• Darlington has proven to be “Too Tough To Tame” for many drivers as they navigate its tight confines, but the odds might be in Herbst’s favor this weekend as he takes on the “The Lady In Black.” In addition to his front-running consistency in the past five races, Herbst has both youth and history on his side. Xfinity Series regulars have been favored by the track as they have won the past four races there, and three of the past four winners have been under the age of 26.

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

Darlington is a tough track, but you had a good run in the Labor Day weekend race last year with a strong fourth-place drive. What are your thoughts heading into Saturday’s race?

“Darlington has definitely been a rollercoaster of a track for me. I’ve always brought a fast car, but it definitely lives up to its ‘Too Tough To Tame’ nickname. I was never able to practice at Darlington, so everything I’ve learned about the track has been through the three races there. The No. 98 Monster Energy team had a good run going at this year’s race in May, but an incident on the last lap ruined our chance of a good finish. We’re riding a wave of top-10s right now, and I hope to keep it going this Saturday and run up front all day.”

The playoffs are only three races away and you’re currently sitting 68 points to the good in the standings. Talk about your journey these past five races that got you back into playoff contention.

“This whole season has been a wild ride. We’ve worked hard to prove that we’re better than where we were running and we’re showing that we’re a strong team that can run up front. I think we’ve made up over 120 points in the past five races by just being consistent and using strategy to get those much-needed stage points. The battle isn’t over yet, but this team deserves to be in the playoffs come Vegas. We’re in a good spot, but we just have to stay out of trouble and keep on putting together good runs.”

What are your expectations heading into Darlington and these last remaining races of the regular season?

“The No. 98 team has worked hard all season long to get to a point where we’re running up front and staying out of trouble. Last weekend, we led nine laps and put together a solid day. We had a car that should’ve been in victory lane. This weekend, we hope to end up there. Our cars have been fast all season, but now we’re in a spot where we’re staying out of trouble, getting good finishes and contending for wins. The plan is to continue that this weekend.”

Chandler Smith – No. 18 JBL Tundra Camping World Trucks Darlington 2 Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 JBL® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: In It To Win It 200, Race 17 of 22 (Race 2 in the Round of 10), 147 Laps – 45/45/57; 200.1 Miles
Location: Darlington (S.C.) Raceway at (1.33-mile egg-shaped oval)
Date/Broadcast: Sept. 5, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Mr. Smith Meets the Lady in Black:

  • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 JBL team head to Darlington Raceway for the second race in the Round of 10 of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs looking to rebound from a disappointing start to the rookie driver’s inaugural playoff campaign. A hub issue in the opening stage at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway forced Smith to the garage for several laps and relegated the Georgia native to a 28th-place finish in the first of three races in the Round of 10. The Georgia native currently sits 18 points below the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 8 with two races remaining.
  • Smith finished the regular season 10th on the playoff grid, 10 points above the cutoff line for qualifying for the post season, after posting three top-five and five top-10 finishes across 15 races. Smith and fellow Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Carson Hocevar are the only two drivers who are competing for a driver’s championship for the first time. The other eight contenders have all competed for the Truck Series championship at least one time in previous seasons.
  • While this is his first competing for a Camping World Truck Series driver’s championship, Smith has at least one Truck Series start at all seven tracks that will be contested during the 2021 playoffs, including two starts at Darlington. Earlier this year at the 1.33-mile-oval, Smith finished the opening stage seventh and Stage Two fourth before getting caught up in a 17-truck pileup on the frontstretch that would relegate him to a 27th-place finish. Last September, the talented teenager was running sixth with just under 20 laps remaining when a loose wheel forced him to pit road under green-flag conditions and left him with a disappointing 23rd-place finish.
  • The 19-year-old driver ranks third among full-time Truck Series drivers with 165 laps led this season. He accumulated 119 of those laps led over the final four races of the regular season.
  • The Toyota Racing Development driver has 11 top-five, and 14 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 15.6 across 32 career Camping World Truck Series starts. His runner-up finish at Knoxville Raceway earlier this season equaled the career-best finish he achieved at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in 2019.
  • While this is Smith’s first time taking part in the driver’s portion of the NASCAR Camping World Serie playoffs, he has been a part of the owner’s playoffs for the No. 51 team each of the last two seasons. Last year, he recorded top-five finishes in all three races of the Round of 10 (Bristol Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway) advancing the No. 51 team to the Round of 8. He opened the Round of 8 up with another top-five finish at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City before an accident relegated him to a 21st-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth in the second race of the round and then after Brandon Jones finished 17th in the final race in the Round of 8 the No. 51 team was eliminated from playoff contention.
  • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman calls the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s Truck Series drivers have three starts at Darlington, with Dillon’s fifth-place finish in 2010 being the best result. In Xfinity Series action, his best result across six starts was also a fifth-place result with Dillon in 2012.
  • JBL, the authority in engineering superior sound, will be the primary sponsor for the No. 18 team for the final time this season at Darlington.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

What will your approach be at Darlington being 18 points below the cutoff line with two races remaining in this round?
“I think that you definitely have to look at the points a little bit, but at the same aspect you have to go out there and whatever happens, happens. Gateway was out of my control. At the end of the day, I can only do so much for myself. We have to regroup as a team and do our best at Darlington.”

You’ve had fast Tundras at Darlington, is it a track that seems to fit your driving style?
“I think it’s more of the characteristics that Darlington holds. It’s a really technical race track, it’s really wore out and you have to come completely off the throttle – which is a strong suite of mine. I haven’t been that great at mile and a halves lately, so Darlington is definitely one of my stronger race tracks and I’m looking to bring our JBL Toyota Tundra to victory lane.”

How will the conditions at Darlington be Sunday for a day race compared to what you experienced earlier this year with an evening race?
“Overall, I think it’s going to be a lot more greasier. With higher temperatures than it was the last time we were there it is going to make the track temperature a lot hotter and that will make it really slick.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 32 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded 258 laps led, 11 top-five and 14 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 15.6.
  • Posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.
  • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
  • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1783 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.4 across 34 career ARCA Menards Series starts. Set an ARCA Racing Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career and earned his first victory after leading a race-high 102 laps at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in his fourth series start.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 JBL Tundra:
KBM-70: The No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team will unload chassis number KBM-070 for Sunday’s 147-lap event at Darlington. Smith has piloted this Tundra three times this year, including a fifth-place finish it its most recent outing at Texas Motor Speedway in June and a sixth-place result at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May.

KBM Notes of Interest:

KBM drivers have collected one win, 162 laps led, two top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.3 across eight starts at Darlington. Kasey Kahne led a race-high 95 laps en route to victory in the 2011 event.
KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (88) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Truex Jr. became the 16th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 21 career victories.
