Notes of Interest

● Coming off a rare, two-week hiatus while NASCAR television partner NBC and its family of networks has been immersed in coverage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Cole Custer and the No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) are ready to get back to action as they head to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at The Glen.

● Sunday’s 90-lap race around the 2.45-mile, seven-turn road course will be Custer’s 62nd Cup Series start and his first at Watkins Glen. The annual August event during Custer’s Rookie of the Year campaign in 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it will be his first Cup Series appearance at The Glen, Custer has raced there three times each in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series and K&N Pro Series East.

● In his three Watkins Glen starts in the Xfinity Series from 2017 through 2019, all in the No. 00 SHR Ford, Custer finished in the top-12 in all three, his best resulting in a sixth-place finish in 2018. He debuted with a 12th-place finish in 2017 and added a seventh-place finish in 2019.

● Custer’s three NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races at The Glen included finishes of fifth from the pole and third from the inside-second-row starting spot in his two most recent visits in 2015 and 2016, respectively. He led 17 laps in the 2015 event.

● Sunday’s race marks Custer’s seventh points-paying Cup Series race on a road course. In his six previous points-paying Cup Series starts on road courses, Custer’s best was an impressive ninth-place run on the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval last October. In February, he rallied for a 13th-place finish on the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway road course after dropping back as far as 24th while avoiding a multicar accident in the closing laps. In his most recent road-course outing, Custer finished 17th in the Cup Series’ inaugural race five weekends ago at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. In this year’s non-points Busch Clash on the Daytona road course, Custer drove deep into the top-10 on multiple occasions, but he fell three laps off the pace late in the race when he could not refire his Mustang after serving a self-imposed stop-and-go penalty for missing the backstraight chicane. He finished 20th.

● In his 11 road-course outings in the Xfinity Series from 2017 through 2019, Custer finished outside the top-10 just once with his fourth-place run at Road America in 2018 best of them all.

● Custer also has top-10s in all three of his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series outings on road courses, all three occurring at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. His best was his most recent, a second-place run from the pole with a race-high 39 laps led in the No. 00 JR Motorsports entry in 2016. In addition to his three K&N Pro Series outings at The Glen, Custer has made three starts at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway with a best finish of fourth in 2019.

● Sunday’s race is the fifth of a ground-breaking seven NASCAR Cup Series races to be held on road courses in 2021 and the first of back-to-back road-course events. From 1988 to 2017, there were only two road courses on the schedule – Sonoma and Watkins Glen. The Charlotte Roval was added in 2018, giving the series three road-course venues. The initial 2021 schedule doubled that tally, with Circuit of the Americas in Austin Texas, Road America, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, where the series will race next week, all being added. And when COVID-19 restrictions forced the cancellation of the series’ stop this year at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, the Daytona road course was put in its place.

● After his 14th-place finish three weekends ago at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, Custer arrives at Watkins Glen 28th in the driver standings.

● Returning to Custer’s No. 41 Ford Mustang for SHR is team co-owner Gene Haas’ newest holding, Haas Tooling, which was launched as a way for CNC machinists to purchase high-quality cutting tools at great prices. Haas cutting tools are sold exclusively online at HaasTooling.com and shipped directly to end users. HaasTooling.com products became available nationally last July, and the cutting tools available for purchase at HaasTooling.com have proven to be even more important during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as CNC machines have become vital to producing personal protective equipment. Haas Automation, founded by Haas in 1983, is America’s leading builder of CNC machine tools. The company manufactures a complete line of vertical and horizontal machining centers, turning centers and rotary tables and indexers. All Haas products are constructed in the company’s 1.1-million-square-foot manufacturing facility in Oxnard, California, and distributed through a worldwide network of Haas Factory Outlets.

● As announced during the annual Coca-Cola 600 Memorial Day weekend, Custer and the team encourage fans to join Wow Wow Classic Waffles in support of Feeding America®, the largest hunger relief organization in the United States with a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. Fans are encouraged to text HUNGER to 50555 to make a $5 donation to Feeding America®, by visiting the Feeding America® donation page on Facebook, or the donation page via the Feeding America® website. Each $1 donated helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America® on behalf of local member food banks.

Cole Custer, Driver of the No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

What are your thoughts about racing at Watkins Glen, in general?

“Watkins Glen’s always been one of my favorite road courses just because there’s so much flow to the racetrack and how fast it is. It’s pretty much hammer down the whole time and it’s just one of those places where you can really feel the flow of the racetrack and how each corner connects with the next one.”

Do you have a favorite part of the track at Watkins Glen?

“I think it’s the esses, going through there almost wide open with guardrails on either side. It’s almost a sketchy part of the track, but it’s fast and it’s fun. I think it’s definitely one of my favorite parts of the track where you can really get after it and carry a lot of speed.”

You’ve raced at Watkins Glen in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the K&N Pro Series but didn’t get to race there during your rookie Cup Series campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What will it be like racing this weekend without practice or qualifying?

“We always want practice to try things and get used to the track. No matter what it is, practice is always a gain. But being a track we’ve all raced on a pretty decent amount, we all know what we need to bring there. Nothing’s changed a ton about what’s going on at Watkins Glen. So I feel like it’s probably not a huge disadvantage to not be there for a couple of years.”

How would you evaluate the SHR road-course program?

“I would say, for us as an organization, we’ve been solid in the road-course races. We’ve definitely wanted to be better, but I feel like we’ve been in the mix, at least. I feel like we can run top-10 and, from there, it’s just a matter of one adjustment and one thing going right on pit road and you’re in the top-five and looking for a win. So I think it’s just a matter of fine-tuning it a little bit, but I’ve been pretty happy with our road-course cars. It’s just a matter of having the whole race play out right.”

Racer Dylan Murry Looking Forward to Second Half of Season

Seeks First Win in Two Different Series

ATHENS, Ga. (August 3, 2021) – With the second half of the 2021 race season looming, driver Dylan Murry is clearly anxious to notch his first victories in both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup North America series.

“This year has been going great, but I’m definitely ready to finally take that top step after four podiums and near wins this year,” said the Athens, Georgia resident as he prepared for this weekend’s IMSA Sportscar Weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. “I am running two different series this year, so I’m getting a lot of seat time, which is great. I can’t wait to give it everything we have for the rest of the season.”

As he’s done previously, Murry will perform double duty at Road America in both the Riley Motorsports Ligier JS P320 (LMP3 class) and the BGB Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.

The son of former sports car world champion, David Murry, he’s currently tied for third in the LMP3 driver standings with co-driver Jim Cox and is seventh in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Pro driver standings.

“We have been increasing our performance throughout the year,” said Murry of his season thus far. “We get stronger each race. We haven’t had the best of luck for some of the races this year, but all in all, we have been extremely strong and have been proving our speed.”

Murry has dealt with the vast performance differences that both the LMP3 car and the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car present, while managing his time between the two series.

“It definitely has been a little challenging going back and forth between the cars,” said Murry. “I have been trying to separate my time equally between the cars. The good thing is that there are multiple drivers with the LMP3, so if my sessions are back-to-back, my co-driver can start or finish the practice sessions in WeatherTech.

“It’s definitely different between the Porsche and Liger. They both have the same acceleration, but the side G forces are much more in the Ligier. It doesn’t take a lot of time to get used to each car again, but there are some tracks that are more different than others. Going into Road America, I think that track will be a lot different between the two cars. Going through the kink, we are full throttle at over 150 mph in the LMP3, but in the Porsche, we’re going to have to be using the brakes for that corner. It will definitely take some time to get used to that specific corner in each car.”

While the emphasis is on finishing the 2021 campaign strong, Murry already has his sights set on the 2022 season.

“I hope next year will be even more exciting than this year, which is pretty hard to do,” he said. “I am really hoping to get my first factory drive for next year. I’ve been working very hard to try and put something big together and we will see where it goes.

“I have my hopes up that each year will keep getting better and better, bigger and bigger. I’m so thankful for how my career is accelerating right now, and I have more drive than ever to continue that growth.”

About Dylan Murry

Dylan Murry made his IMSA debut in the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series in 2018 alongside his father. They were the first father-son combination to race in the series. In 2017, he finished in the top 10 in both NASCAR K&N Pro Series races that he competed in. He also has 12 overall championships to his credit in go karts as well as in the Pro Class Legends and Pro-Legends Winter Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Gilliland Thinks It’s Great for Truck Series to Return to Watkins Glen

Crosley Brands Brings New Look to 38 Truck

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (August 3, 2021) – Todd Gilliland brings back Crosley Brands to the No. 38 Ford F-150 this weekend at the Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International road course. Crosley Brands and Gilliland have one win this season and are looking for another this weekend before the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs.

“It’s exciting to go back to Watkins Glen,” said Gilliland. “I think it’s great for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. It’s insane how many people camp at the track and it’s such an energetic atmosphere- so it’s a great fit for Camping World. And for us, Crosley is a great fit because we’ve won with them at a road course and we want to win again with them on Saturday. We’re coming back with the Crosley red and black and the truck looks great. And, it’s cool to have a Ford dealer on our F-150 with Bence Motor Sales.

Gilliland comes into Watkins Glen with six consecutive top-10 finishes. This is the last race before the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs begin. Gilliland is fourth in points and is looking for more stage wins to help him maintain third once the Playoff teams have their points reset.

“There is a lot to race for this weekend to set us up for the Playoffs,” continued Gilliland. “A win will be huge, but even getting a stage win or two will go a long way. I felt that we had some stage wins slip away from us, so hopefully we can get some back and be in really good shape going into our Playoffs.”

Saturday’s race will be televised live on FS1 at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Through its subsidiary Safety-Kleen, Clean Harbors has been one of Richard Petty Motorsports’ longest partners. Moffitt has driven under both the Clean Harbors and Performance Plus banner since the start of his professional racing career.

As the largest environmental services provider in North America with a diverse fleet, Clean Harbors is recruiting for a variety of positions – from over the road to heavy equipment drivers. The hiring event offers applicants a signup retention bonuses of up to $7,500. Clean Harbors is giving away prizes – including NASCAR Racing Experience passes – outside the track at the midway over the race weekend. Additionally, the company will have two commercials aimed at drivers that will air during the Clean Harbors 100 at The Glen. Sheehan Excited for Street Course at Music City Grand Prix Franklin Road Classic

Nashville, TENNESSEE – August 3, 2021 – The Round 8 of the 2021 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season sees the iconic muscle car roadshow head to the world famous Music City of Nashville, Tennessee for the inaugural running of the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix. Saturday’s TA2 feature race is the Vodka Spiked Coolers presents Franklin Road Classic. Organized in conjunction with the Indycar Series, the Trans Am organizers are to be applauded for such a terrific innovation that will undoubtedly introduce TA2 to a new and wider audience.

Tom Sheehan is making the trip from his New Hampshire base to Nashville Tennessee in good spirits this week with the team prepared for taking on the new course . He currently sits P8 overall in the drivers’ standings. Having made good gains with the setup of the car at Brainerd where he finished in P7, Tom is very upbeat about the weekend ahead in the home of country and western music.

“Nashville is a street course and we’re really looking forward to it,” said Sheehan. He has produced some of his best finishes of recent times on street courses, notably at the Motor City Grand Prix in Detroit. “I always enjoy a concrete bullring! Nobody’s seen the track, nobody really knows the track or driven the track. Practice time will be at a premium.”

After a good finish at Brainerd he added, ”The Series has got to be excited about it. Indycar is a great show, TA2 is a great show. I’m happy for the folks in Nashville and I’m looking forward to not disappointing them. It sounds like a really exciting event down in Nashville.”

We would certainly second that. In addition to the racing, there are some terrific music shows on offer and there will undoubtedly be a carnival-like atmosphere. There is a bumper 39 car TA2 entry for the Music City Grand Prix, so a terrific race is on the cards. The course features a long straight on the road course meaning very high top speeds. At the far end of the track away from the paddock are a series of tight turns and the whole layout is shaped not unlike a giant guitar!

There are two half hour practice sessions for the drivers on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., while the huge entry and nature of the track mean that qualifying is split into two groups. Saturday morning sees the first group go out at 11:00 a.m. for 15-minutes with the second group dovetailing immediately afterwards. The drivers and teams then duel it out on the streets of Nashville for 46 laps of the circuit and gets underway at 1:25 p.m.

Music City Grand Prix Ahead for Thwaits and Franklin Road Apparel

Nashville, TENNESSEE – August 3, 2021 – The arrival of the Trans Am roadshow in his home city of Nashville Tennessee has provided Ken Thwaits and Franklin Road Apparel with a true match made in heaven opportunity both to race and to promote the Franklin Road Trans Am merchandise produced this year in conjunction with the Series. Franklin Road are the title Sponsors for Saturday’s TA2 Feature race, which is fully billed as the Big Machine Vodka Spiked Coolers presents the Franklin Road Classic.

“Franklin Road Apparel is pleased to announce that we will be the title sponsor for the Trans Am by Pirelli TA2 race at the Music City Grand Prix,” said Ken in an official statement.

“Having a big presence at the inaugural Music City Grand Prix is fantastic. Our Franklin Road Apparel store located in Franklin has a great opportunity to get in front of our client demographic and let people know where to find the coolest men’s and women’s apparel in Middle Tennessee. If patrons cannot make an in person visit to our store, they can always stop by our virtual store at www.franklinroad.com.”

Ken currently sits in P4 in the TA Championship from 20 starters in the prestigious TA Class of the 2021 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship, a position that would undoubtedly be the envy of any ‘rookie’ in the big league of American Muscle car racing. But the 2020 Trans Am XGT Champion isn’t one to let the grass grow under his feet and he has also been competing in the TA2 Class, principally to gain more track time in the muscle cars.

At the Franklin Road Music City Grand Prix, Ken will be racing around the streets of Nashville in the No. 6 Franklin Road Apparel Chevrolet Camaro. We spoke to Ken ahead of the weekend and his enthusiasm was tangible, “In my earlier years of racing I was able to race in the Long Beach Grand Prix,” said Ken. “Now we get a chance to rocket over the Cumberland River at over 150mph in our own hometown. What an awesome opportunity!”

The Franklin Road Apparel and Trans Am Series by Pirelli branded apparel will be available at a special pop-up store located next to the Trans Am pit area in the main paddock. It will feature high end tee shirts featuring Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Vodka’s TA2 car ripping around the track. Fans are urged to come check out all the TA2 cars getting ready to race in the streets of Nashville and also pick up a one of a kind keepsake for the inaugural Music City Grand Prix!

There is a huge 39 car TA2 entry for the Music City Grand Prix, which is being run in conjunction with the Indycar series. This promises a tremendous spectacle on the road course around the streets of the famous home of country music, something that will delight the fans.

The drivers and teams then hardly have time to gather their breath before the race itself, which is over 46 laps of the circuit and gets underway at 1:25 p.m. The action continues all weekend with – as we would expect – music as well as action packed racing.
