Thwaits Joins Forces with Pancho Weaver for Exciting Sebring Line-up

Sebring, FLORIDA – February 19, 2021 – A quality field of 13 cars will be assembled on the grid in the prestigious TA Class for the opening round of the 2021 Trans Am presented by Pirelli season at Sebring, February 19 to 21. Previous Champions Simon Gregg, Amy Ruman and together with reigning Champion Ernie Francis Jr. will all be in attendance and battling hard as usual, but the familiar contenders have a new front line opponent to deal with this weekend in the shape of 2020 XtremeGT Class Champion, Ken Thwaits. Tennessee based Thwaits has made the switch from GT3 sportscar to muscle car for the new season and he couldn’t have picked a better outfit and car to partner up with than the Pancho Weaver team and the awesome Dodge Challenger.

Ken will be lined up at Sebring behind the wheel of the No. 2 Franklin Road Apparel / Weaver Racing / SRI Dodge Challenger – arguably the most effective four wheeled weapon on the Trans Am circuit. He’s been testing in Florida under the expert tutelage of Boris Said and now it’s all systems go for the curtain raising weekend of action. Ken has the option of a test session on Friday, February 19 at 11:30 a.m. ET with a second optional test session at 4:30 p.m. Official practice is on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. with the all important qualifying session at 4:30 p.m. the same afternoon. The TA Class feature race is at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday with over 27 heart pounding laps of the 3.75 mile, 17 turn circuit.

We spoke to Ken ahead of what promises to be an extremely exciting weekend and he was clearly looking forward to it, “Everything has been going great so far but that will count for nothing without a successful race! The proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say, so we are keeping our feet firmly on the ground and taking it one step at a time.”

When asked about his chances in the big race he added, “We’re optimistic of a good result, but the TA Class cars are very different beasts to the GT3 cars [of XtremeGT]. They take a lot more driving! We’re looking forward to it and the whole weekend but are taking nothing for granted.”

Pinch-Hit: While Young’s Motorsports primary driver Kris Wright is focusing on making his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut this weekend at the Daytona (Fla.) Wright will return to the seat in the series’ next scheduled event at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway on Mar. 5, 2021.

Daytona Road Course Connection: Grala already has experience at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course filling-in for NASCAR Cup Series driver Austin Dillon last August after the Richard Childress Racing driver contracted COVID-19.

Grala qualified 10th, led three laps and finished seventh driving the No. 3 American Ethanol Chevrolet.

Calling the Shots: Guiding Krala as crew chief of the No. 02 Young’s Building Systems | Randco Chevrolet Silverado is longtime crew chief Eddie Troconis.

Troconis is a two-time winning crew chief in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and comes to Young’s Motorsports after tenures at ThorSport Racing, AM Racing and Sam Hunt Racing (Xfinity Series) respectively.

He will crew chief his 124th NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Friday night. In his previous 123 races, he has two wins, 22 top-five and 44 top-10 finishes to his resume.

He has one prior Truck Series race as crew chief at the Daytona Road Course with a best finish of 11th last August with driver Austin Wayne Self.

Daytona 500 Recap: Grala returns to his NASCAR Truck Series roots on the heels of making his first NASCAR Cup Series start for Kaulig Racing in last Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Grala finished 28th after starting 40th in the Great American Race.

Just The Facts: Grala, 22, has 33 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) starts to his credit with a victory at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in Feb. 2017. Additionally, he has one pole, five top-five and 15 top-10 performances driving for GMS Racing and Niece Motorsports, respectively.

Road Course Return: In his sophomore season of Truck Series competition, Fogleman returns to the Daytona Road Course looking to improve on his 19th place run at the 14-turn, 3.61-mile road course in August 2020.

Fogleman started 15th and through strategy was able to stay on the lead lap and earn one of his 11 top-20 finishes during his rookie Truck Series season.

Daytona Race Recap: Last weekend in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Fogleman who had to qualify on speed did so and raced towards a top-10 finish before being collected in a mid-race incident.

Daytona Road Course Return: Fan favorite Spencer Boyd will make his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course on Feb. 19, 2021.

Chasing That W: Boyd is eyeing his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory for himself and Young’s Motorsports.

In 2019 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Boyd pulled an upset during the Truck Series Playoffs by winning the Sugarland Shines 250 at the 2.66-mile superspeedway edging Todd Gilliland by 0.027 seconds.

GIVE US A RECAP OF BRINGING HOME A TOP-10 FINISH IN THE DAYTONA 500
“It was a busy week with a bunch of stuff going on down there at Daytona. And then a new team, new procedures with (crew chief) Ryan Sparks still leading our unit; to have two cars down there in the Top 10 after it was all said and done with Spire Motorsports means a lot. I think it means a lot to (co-owners) TJ. Puchyr and Jeff Dickerson, too. Financially, obviously the Daytona 500 is a big one. It certainly started us off on the right foot. And I think it builds some momentum. We have a great starting position this weekend. We’re starting seventh. So, I’ll have at least six people in front of me to slow me down before I get to Turn 1. I’m certainly not a road course ringer. I have a little work to do on that. But it would be good to learn from the guys in front of me and to see what we can do this weekend.”

IN THE LAST FIVE DAYTONA 500 RACES, ABOUT 80 PERCENT OF THE FIELD HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN A CRASH. FIVE YEARS BEFORE THAT, IT WAS ABOUT 45 PERCENT. AT WHAT POINT DOES A TREND BECOME TROUBLING AND IS THERE A SOLUTION TO THIS? OR THE CARS ARE BUILT TO PROTECT THE DRIVERS AND THIS SHOULDN’T’ BE A WORRY?
“That’s a good question. I think it’s a product of a couple of different things. One, all the drivers are starting to study speedway racing and actually take it a little more serious. It’s kind of the same way as road course racing where people are like we’re going to Watkins Glen or Sonoma so I’m not going to really concentrate on it because it’s only two races. Well now that you have a chance to win a speedway race and qualify your way into the Playoffs, guys really study it and figure out where to put their cars. So you’ll see guys making runs or throwing blocks because they know, to protect their track position, they’ve got to be aggressive with those blocks. I think that’s where some of the speedway racing, the product of it has changed over the past couple of years just because the cars are tighter, the drivers are being a little more aggressive. And, that’s a heck of a lot more wrecks, though, when you look at the last five years compared to the others. I’m not sure what you can blame it on. I think obviously you can point to some of the packets that keep the cars closer together with the two tandem stops that we got away from and then the high-downforce stuff that we have right now. It certainly keeps the cars closer together and you have to be aggressive to keep your track position.”

AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU CAN MAKE THE DECISION WHETHER YOU RACE OR NOT; AND OBVIOUSLY YOU CONTINUE TO RACE. AS SOMEBODY WHO HAS HAD SUCCESS, BUT WHO ALSO WENT THROUGH THAT BIG CRASH LAST YEAR, HOW DO YOU MANAGE THAT WITH WHAT CAN HAPPEN? OR YOU’RE A DRIVER AND YOU’RE SUPERHUMAN AND THAT CAN’T BE A PART OF YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS?
“It’s certainly in there. I know that I definitely tug on the belts a little bit harder at Daytona and Talladega more so than I do at Martinsville. I can promise you that. It’s just part of the deal, man. It’s part of the job. That’s why we make good money because we are risking our lives each and every week for entertainment. But on the flip side of that, I know John Patalak just from working with him through the development with some of Dad’s seats over at the R&D Center. He is one of the sharpest guys that I know. And he’s trying to make these race cars as safe as possible and we’re looking forward to the Next Gen car which is considerably more safe than what we have now. So, when you get in, you know that NASCAR is doing everything they can to keep the cars as safe as possible. But at the end of the day, you’ve just got to get in and put the helmet on and forget about it.”

YOU SAID THIS WEEK THAT THE EQUIPMENT IS BETTER THAN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE HEADING INTO THE SEASON WITH CHIP GANASSI RACING CHASSIS AND HENDRICK MOTORS. CONSIDERING THERE IS GOING TO BE MORE 750 HP RACES THIS YEAR, DO YOU FEEL LIKE THAT’S A BETTER CHANCE TO SHOW YOUR ABILITY BEHIND THE WHEEL?
“I think every week is going to be a better opportunity for me to show what I’m capable of doing behind the wheel just because we have some up-to-date, current cars; and our motor package is on the same platform as some of the other guys. I want to get through the road course unscathed. A goal of mine is a Top 20 on all the road courses because I think I only have four or five road courses under my belt in my whole life. I’m trying to mitigate the losses there but I’m excited to get to Vegas, Homestead, Phoenix, and Martinsville; and some other places that I’m familiar with and really see how we stack up because I think that with all that we learned last year working with Ryan Sparks, he kind of knows what to look for in these race cars, We can add it to a lighter car; make some more downforce with some better motors, and I think we’re going to be a force to reckon with.”

WITH RYAN SPARKS ON THE PIT BOX, HOW CRITICAL WAS IT THAT HE CAME WITH YOU TO SPIRE MOTORSPORTS? WHAT CAN HE BRING IN TERMS OF SUCCESS TO THE TEAM THIS YEAR?
“We didn’t come as a package per se. I jumped on with Spire and they were like man, who do you want to crew chief? And I knew, with working with Ryan and the work ethic he has and how motivated he is. There were some guys that they interviewed but Ryan was certainly the most qualified guy. And the fact that we worked together was just an added bonus. I’m excited to have him back because he’s got some more tools to work with the simulation seat from Ganassi. He’s got a Hawk-Eye over there at Spire Motorsports. So he’s been working really hard to maximize every angle of our car and I think that’s what showed at Daytona with both Spire’s cars running the two fastest laps of the weekend.”

JEFF DICKERSON PUT OUT A STATEMENT AFTER THE DAYTONA 500. DID IT FEEL LIKE A WIN? DID YOU SENSE THAT THEY THOUGHT THE PERFORMANCE WAS LIKE A WIN?
“He might have. Obviously, he was excited enough to put out a release on Instagram. You know, I had more people reach out to me about that than I expected just that people were realizing Jeff’s character and the people in the relationship got him to where they are as a race team. Somebody texted me about that this morning and I was like man, that’s why Jeff is one of my favorite people. I had to re-phrase the text back and I’m like Jeff was one of my favorite people before I started driving for him. So, the fact that I get to drive for one of the guys I’ve looked up to in the garage for the past couple of years is really neat.”

YOU ARE ONLY ONE RACE IN, BUT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE A WINNING TEAM?
“Short answer: no. Not at the moment, But the people and the tools that are in place continue to build toward that and obviously Spire is really hedging their bets toward this Next Gen car. The goal is always to go to the race track and run the best way possible. But to try to win this year wasn’t necessarily the goal because still, the bottom of the well is infinite with the way the cars are now. The Next Gen car with a single source manufacturer, if we can get a couple more partners in the fold where we can have a comfortable racing budget with some of the teams like Hendrick and Stewart Haas, I really do think that we can compete for some races, short tracks, maybe every week. I think I have a little bit of things to learn just to learn the tricks the Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, what those guys do to close races out I’ll have to learn that stuff when time comes. But I’d like to think that if I’m in a Top 10 car I can make that thing just get up there and contend for wins one day.”

HAVE YOU SPENT ANY TIME WITH STEVE LETARTE? HAS HE TALKED TO YOU ABOUT COMING FROM A CHAMPIONSHIP ORGANIZATION LIKE HENDRICK AND WHAT YOU GUYS CAN DO IN THE SHORT TERM TO AIM TOWARD THAT GOAL?
“Steve has been way more involved than I expected him to be. He actually might be involved more than he expected to be, too. He’s in there almost every day of the week, really. He was sending me motivational text messages before the race and he actually sent me a really nice and supportive one after the race at 2 o’clock in the morning or whatever it was. He stayed up and listened to our radio communications and just reiterated that I’m the guy for the job and that he was impressed by me. Coming from a multi time Cup winning crew chief like Steve Letarte and to have him in our camp means a lot. For him, he’s obviously worked with a lot of great drivers, so for him to tell me that meant a lot. So, I’m going to certainly lean on him for some leadership qualities and things like that I haven’t been around in the past that I can continue to lean on off-the-track stuff with our team, I think that’s going to be just as important as what I can do on the race track.”

OTHER THAN SUPERSPEEDWAYS, WHERE DO YOU FEEL YOU DO HAVE YOUR BEST SHOT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND TO SHOW PEOPLE WHAT YOU’RE CAPABLE OF DOING?
“I always have Daytona and Talladega circled because I’ve run fairly well there. But Martinsville is a place I’m really looking forward to. We’ve run really well there with a 2006 Roush car in the past. I’m looking forward to driving a car that was built in this decade to see what we can do. I really think we can run a Top 10 at Martinsville; and if we don’t, I’d be a little bit upset. And I think Ryan Sparks has that race circled as well at Martinsville as well to see how we stack up.”

SEEING SPIRE MOTORSPORTS GET THE TOP TWO FASTEST LAPS IN THE RACE, OBVIOUSLY IT’S A SUPERSPEEDWAY. BUT WHAT CAN THIS SHOW FOR THE CARS AND ENGINES HEADING INTO THE MEAT AND POTATOES OF THE SEASON?
“You’re making me hungry with the meat and potatoes now (laughs). I forgot where it was; whether it was the first media Zoom here before the 500 and people asked if they could take Spire seriously. And I was like check back in here in six months and we’ll see if they’re taking us seriously. We’re one weekend into the year and I would say that people should start taking us seriously. And I get that Daytona is Daytona. With certain circumstances you can pop off a fast lap like we did there. But you don’t luck into two Top 10 finishes in the 500 just because you’re out there riding around. So, like I said, I’m ready to get to Phoenix and Vegas and some intermediates too just to see where we stack-up speed wise and figure out those groups of four or five cars that we can race consistently and figure out how to beat them. I’m looking at cars like even RCR or JTG I feel like we can compete with those guys each and every week. And wherever that stacks up in points, we should be somewhere between 19th and 22nd. I feel like that’s where we should be running and getting better each and every week.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU IN SEEING A LOT OF PEOPLE INVESTING RECENTLY IN THIS SPORT FROM A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT ANGLES?
“Yeah, that’s a great question. When you have a guy like Pitbull come in as a co-owner for Trackhouse Racing and you obviously you have Denny Hamlin and the Michael Jordan team. And they are, from what I understand, four or five more heavily backed owners looking to try to get a charter to come into this sport. I think that just shows the level of excitement people have. And also, the business model that NASCAR is trying to push toward makes some financial sense for somebody to get into the fold with this Next Gen and be able to compete right off the bat. So, I think the trajectory of NASCAR is certainly looking up. We can talk about the Daytona 500 TV numbers all day, but you’ve got to take into consideration all the variables that they’ve dealt with. I think there’s more excitement behind NASCAR since the late ‘90’s, just with all the personalities coming in and stuff we’re doing off the race track as well as on the race track now and going into the future.”

LOOKING AT THE DAYTONA ROAD COURSE THIS WEEKEND, WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
“Everything. The whole turn left, turn right, stop, go, all of that is fairly hard. You’ve got guys that have been doing it for a while with more road course experience than others and I’m probably at the bottom end of that experience line. So, I’m going to certainly learn as much as I can from those guys at the front of the pack this weekend with my seventh starting position, and just try to keep all four on the black stuff instead of the green stuff and try not to make any mistakes. I think keeping the brakes on this low downforce package will be important to be there at the end because it’ll be a lot longer than the Clash was.”

Reuse Brothers to Compete in Partial Truck Series Schedule for Jordan Anderson Racing in 2021

STATESVILLE, N.C. (February 18, 2021) – Jordan Anderson Racing (JAR) announced today that brothers Bobby Reuse and Roger Reuse from Birmingham, Alabama will split a partial season driving the organization’s flagship No. 3 Chevrolet Silverado in the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series (NCWTS) in 2021.

Bobby will make his initial NCWTS start Feb. 19 at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course in the BrakeBest Brake Pads 159 with support from the restaurant chain I Heart Mac & Cheese and More, along with JAR team partners Bommarito Automotive Group and Lucas Oil. Roger will make his first start for the 2021 season at a later date.

How was your race in Daytona?

“It was awesome. I’ve been waiting to get back to the racetrack for a while with my new team members, and the old team members that are still on my team from last year. We’ve got a great group of guys. It’s been really great so far. Obviously, we are just one race in, but it was a good result. We had a chance to win and that’s all you can ask for at a place like Daytona – is give yourself a shot. We came up short and gave myself some film to watch to try to get better next time. Overall, it was a good day – tough day to lose because you lead a lot of laps at Daytona, you start getting excited. It just didn’t work out for us, so I’ve got some things I can do to try to be better and we will move on from there.”

What does it feel like to you to know you had the opportunity to attend races as a kid, and now you are driving and making your own brand?

“It’s crazy. I always thought that my dad (Jeff Burton) was a superhero. My dad was a race car driver and that was the coolest thing in the world for me to look at my dad and be proud of him and be proud of how hard he works to be there. Now to see him and how he does his career, the tail end of his career, where I was able to remember most of it and remember how hard he had to work, it’s pretty surreal to go back and have a chance to win races and race at these places that my dad went to. It’s pretty rare that you get to slow down and reflect on it. You are always so busy racing and going like crazy, but it’s pretty awesome. I’m proud of my dad and really trying to follow in his footsteps and be even half the man that he was.”

What have you done to prepare for the road course races?

“There is a ton of road races, so it’s super important for Playoff points, for race wins, for whatever your goals are. Road courses, you are going to have to find a way to win there. You are going to have to find a way to run well, win, whatever it may be. It’s really important. Recently, I’ve been working really hard on road races. I went to COTA in a TransAm car to try to get better – a TA2 car, raced there with some Toyota teammates. That was a good time. We didn’t race, but we tried to race and practiced. That was good. My dad (Jeff Burton) and I both got go-karts. We are both ripping around road courses in go-karts all the time. I’m trying to get better and he’s trying to stay in shape and have fun. I’m trying to be fast, so it’s a good combination of father-son rivalry. We have a good time with that. Lot of it has been in person seat time, and a lot of it has been watching film and trying to get better that way as well.”

What has been your biggest challenge in preparing for the road course races?

“I think the biggest challenge – the guys that separate themselves are amazing in the braking zones. You watch in the Clash; Chase Elliott is the road racing guy now. He’s the favorite to win at all of the road races. You could see him in the braking zone just slamming the car in there, using all of the brakes but not locking up, aggressive, things like that. That’s the biggest challenge – getting yourself past that next level. If you look at the data, I’m just as fast as anyone from center to exit, but those guys that have that braking technique and have dialed that down over years and years are very good. They are very hard to beat, and they are always getting better like you are. So if you show up to the racetrack and you think that I’m better now, I’m going to come in here and whoop everyone’s tail – everyone else got better too, so you’ve got to be almost doubling their rate of growth. It’s a big challenge but it’s fun.”

Do you wonder where you fit in with Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. signing extensions?

“Obviously, you think about things like that because your dream is to be in the Cup Series, but if I’m ever going to be there – I’ve got to focus on where I’m at now. Last year, I had a good year, won races, got my name into those conversations somewhat, but didn’t do anything to make it an undeniable thing. That’s what you have to do now-a-days to get a Cup ride, you have to be amazing in the Xfinity Series. You see Chase Briscoe, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, guys that win a ton of races and they find a way to make themselves undeniable for the Cup Series, so that’s the next step for me, plus I love the Xfinity Series. It’s so much fun. Winning races there is an amazing feeling, and I hope to be doing more of that – but that’s the next deal for me, is trying to be at that level and have a season like that.”

What can you do to show you are the guy who can take that next step?

“I think show that you are ready to put in the work. When you get to the Cup Series, no matter how good you are in the Xfinity or Trucks or wherever you come from, it’s a big step. Those guys are all amazing. They are all guys that are there for a reason. They are the best of the best. To go there and contend for wins, and win races, is one of the hardest things on this planet to do. To show that you are willing to work, to show that you are willing to take criticism and try to get better from it, that’s my biggest thing. There’s also the side effect of work is getting better, so you want to show that you are working and getting better to try to impress people, but you are also doing it because you need to, to win races. You want to win races. I think if I just focus on where I’m at now. I know it’s a cliché answer, but if I focus on where I’m at now and try to be the best that I can be here and try to enjoy where I’m at, I think that maybe puts me in a better spot to be able to make that jump one day.”

What do you think it will take to move to the Cup Series?

“The Xfinity Series champion puts himself or herself in a great spot to be a Cup driver one day. So, whatever it takes to win a championship for me is kind of a goal. My new crew chief Jason (Ratcliff) when we first got to working with each other, we had a few meetings and we decided to write down our goals and go research what it took to win the championship – how many laps did they lead, how many stages did they win, whatever it may be. We went over all of that separately, wrote down our goals and came together with pretty similar goals – six or seven wins, less than three DNFs. Things that have been averaged out to what it takes to be a champion, now we just have to go attack and believe in those goals. There is always the outlier. (Tyler) Reddick’s first championship, I think he won one race, guys like that who can do that is another way to do it, but on average you have to win a lot of races and stages to be a champion.”

Do you have any stories that your dad told you about racing with Dale Earnhardt?

“Later towards when Dale (Earnhardt) passed away, my dad (Jeff Burton) and my mom (Kim Burton) were thinking about getting this boat. My dad has always loved boats and he was racing Cup, and he was in a spot where he thought he could get a boat. My mom was nervous, financially nervous, to do it. She was nervous to make a purchase like that – a boat. They came from little to nothing. They were in South Boston, Virginia and clawed their way through bad times, and once they got to the top, they were like we have to save our money. Dale Sr. came up to my mom, and hugged my mom, and it was probably within a few months of when he passed away and he was telling her to go and live life and go get this boat. Shortly after Dale passed away, they got this boat and made some memories on that thing before they sold it. He tells me stories about Dale a lot. He tells me stories about a lot of things because I’m interested in it, but I think that’s the coolest one. No one knew what would happen, but he was telling my parents to go enjoy life, live life and then the unthinkable happen, but they made a decision based on that moment.”

How do you grade yourself as a road racer right now?

“I don’t know, but I’ll tell you better after this weekend. I’ve been working really hard to be better. I think last weekend was my best superspeedway race I’ve ever driven. I felt like I made a lot of gains in that regard. I really hope I made a lot of gains in the road racing regard too. I’ve been working really hard on it. I think last year I was fast. I was kind of in contention for the best of the rest of last year. You had your road racing ringers and then there was the guys like me and I’d put Riley Herbst was there, I’d put Noah Gragson in there – the guys that were not quite as fast as Chase (Briscoe) and Austin (Cindric), but guys that were close and pretty quick on lap time and were able to contend in the end. I put myself in there as of last year, but hopefully this year I made that jump to be that much better and contend for wins and lead laps. I’ll tell you after this weekend.”

What stood out to you about the Daytona Road Course?

“It’s a fun race track. It’s a place that was really, really cool to run at. Just because you never thought you would. You’ve always seen the Rolex race there and you always dreamed of racing at Daytona, but you never were dreaming about racing the road course at Daytona as a little kid, or at least I wasn’t. To do that was a cool experience and something that I never thought I would do. The race track in and of itself is so fun. It’s a low grip infield with a high grip outside of the track. It leads to a lot of great passing zones, a lot of great opportunity for good racing. We saw that in the Clash. The Clash this year was a crazy finish at the end and I expect more of that this year.”

When you are racing on a road course, how can you tell the difference between rubbing and bumping that’s part of the race or is intentional?

“You know normally by how hard they hit you or whether or not you end up in the grass or whether or not you end up wrecked or spun out or whatever. Like last year, me and Ross (Chastain) were racing real hard and he wheel-hopped and he got loose under me and hit me off the race track. I was upset and I was frustrated, but I knew it wasn’t on purpose. I knew he didn’t take me out on the last lap on purpose just because I could tell what happened. You can kind of tell by the aggression level the guy behind you, the part of the race that you’re in and things like that. At the end of the day, they have fenders on our cars for a reason and we use them. It’s a lot of fun. I try and race people the way I want to be raced and I expect the same towards myself. Normally, I don’t really have too many issues with it. It’s been fun. The road races are crazy. The last five laps of road course races in the Xfinity Series are nuts. Everyone is going crazy and it’s pretty fun. It’s like racing go-karts and banging off each other, it’s pretty cool.”

A large majority of the field – including both Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher – ran 35 laps on the road course just last week in The Clash, while this weekend’s event marks just the second official race on the track in its history. Daytona 500 Recap, Daytona RC Preview

  • Newman was one of the unfortunate victims of a 15+ car pileup on lap 14 of Sunday’s Daytona 500, which saw the Kohler Generators Ford sustain major rear-end damage, ending his day early.
  • Buescher was also involved in the crash, although he was able to drive his Fastenal Ford back to pit road. Despite the team’s best repair efforts, he was retired based off the damaged vehicle repair policy, slotting him 31st.
  • Buescher heads back to Daytona this weekend on the road course, where a season ago he finished fifth. Fastenal returns to his No. 17 machine as part of the weekend.
  • Newman carries with him a unique look on the Castrol Ford, donning a white and grey muted scheme commemorating the carbon neutral initiative announced Thursday by Roush Fenway. In addition to the car being neutral in color, the team will be outfitted across the board in white, including team firesuits, hats, etc.

Buescher, 17 Team Confident in Heading Back to Daytona RC
Buescher, a prior winner on road courses in his NASCAR tenure, didn’t let the newness of an event halt his progress at the Daytona RC last summer. Buescher was in the hunt late and weaved through the field in the closing laps to finish fifth. It marked his first-ever top five on a road course in the NCS, and Jack Roush’s first top five on a road course since 2014. Last week in The Clash, Buescher finished 16th, but was inside the top five with less than five to go before being spun out by a competitor.

Newman No Stranger to Daytona RC
Newman is one of a few drivers with other series’ experience at the Daytona Road Course, having driven the track previously in the former IROC Series. Newman – along with other current Cup stars Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch and Martin Truex Jr. – made starts at Daytona in the series from 2003-06. Newman won the 2004 event after starting on the pole in the 40-lap event, and finished third in the final series event at Daytona.

Road Racing Success

As an organization, Roush Fenway has made 354 starts on road courses across NASCAR’s major touring series and has recorded 15 wins, 69 top-fives, 134 top-10s, 11 poles and 879 laps led.

Martin Goes Three-Straight in N.Y.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin is responsible for four of Jack Roush’s road course wins all-time, including three-straight at Watkins Glen from 1993-95. Martin dominated the three years, leading a combined 183 laps, and won all three from the pole. He also won once in Sonoma, in 1997, after also starting from the point to lead 69 of the 74 laps.

Edwards Victorious Four Times, at Four Different Courses

Carl Edwards also visited victory lane for Jack Roush at Sonoma, driving to the win in 2014 after starting fourth. In Xfinity action, Edwards was victorious at WGI in 2012, Road America in 2010, and Montreal in 2009.

This weekend NASCAR returns to Daytona International Speedway. But this time, the Cup Series, Xfinity Series and the Camping World Truck Series will all compete on the Daytona Road Course.

It will be the first of seven road course events that will also include Circuit of The Americas (COTA), Watkins Glen International, Sonoma Raceway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course (ROVAL) and Road America. 

There will be no qualifying or practice and the lineup has been set using the following formula:

25 percent: Driver’s finishing position from the previous race
25 percent: Car owner’s finishing position from the previous race
35 percent: Team owner points ranking
15 percent: Fastest lap from the previous race

The first NASCAR Cup Series race held on the Daytona Road Course (RC) was Aug. 16, 2020, and the event was won by Chase Elliott. Elliott led 34 laps and became the youngest RC winner at 24 years, 8 months and 19 days.

Elliott leads all active drivers in NASCAR Cup Series road course wins with five victories, followed by Kyle Busch (4), Martin Truex Jr. (4), Kevin Harvick (2), Joey Logano (1), Kurt Busch (1) and Ryan Blaney (1).

McDowell Aiming for yet Another Place in History at DAYTONA Road Course

Only Three Drivers Have Gone Back-to-Back to Open Season Since Daytona International Speedway Opened in 1959

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2021) – Michael McDowell made history this past Sunday when he stunned the motorsports world by winning the 63rd edition of the DAYTONA 500 for his first career triumph. Now, he has yet another opportunity to make history, joining an elite group that features two NASCAR Hall of Famers and a future one. All he needs is a win in Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 at the DAYTONA Road Course.

Since Daytona International Speedway hosted the first or second race of the season beginning in 1970, only three drivers have captured back-to-back victories to begin a new campaign. The latest was Matt Kenseth, who started off 2009 with a DAYTONA 500 triumph then backed it up with a victory at Auto Club Speedway (CA). Jeff Gordon pulled off the trick in 1997, becoming a DAYTONA 500 Champion and followed it up with a win at North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, NC. 

David Pearson’s accomplishment was somewhat different in 1976. Back then, the road course at the now defunct Riverside International Raceway served as the season opener. Pearson, driving the No. 21 for the famed Wood Brothers, went to Victory Lane at Riverside, then captured his memorable DAYTONA 500 triumph a week later after he and Richard Petty collided on the final lap.

Now, on center stage is McDowell, who was able to slip through a last-lap altercation in the DAYTONA 500 that involved nearly 10 cars. And, next on the schedule, is the DAYTONA Road Course. Could he pull off another upset, and also win on consecutive weekends at the same venue (trioval first week; road course the second week)?

“We feel really optimistic and confident,” said McDowell, who finished 10th in the Go Bowling 235 At The DAYTONA Road Course NASCAR Cup Series race last August, the first time the premier series ever competed on the 3.61-mile layout. “We had a top-five car most of the day last year. Drew (Blickensderfer, crew chief) and I went for it near the end with taking tires but we didn’t get a late-race caution, so the strategy didn’t work like we wanted.

“But, Chase Elliott (last year’s winner) is the curve ball. He has been so fast with a huge separation from the field. Hopefully we can close the gap and put some pressure on him, and others. Even without the DAYTONA 500 win, we would still feel confident coming back this weekend. We have really worked hard on our road course program this offseason and we are getting better. It’s another good opportunity for us.”

McDowell has shown promise on road courses in his career, being a regular in the top 10 during races. In addition, he has a lot of experience on the course at Daytona, made famous by the Rolex 24 at DAYTONA. McDowell has competed in a total of seven WeatherTech SportsCar Championship events, including five in the Rolex 24. He has had finished of third, fourth, seventh and eighth.

All three of last year’s winners of the DAYTONA Road Course races went on to win their respective NASCAR championships. They included Elliott (NASCAR Cup Series), Austin Cindric (NASCAR Xfinity Series) and Sheldon Creed (NASCAR Camping World Truck Series).

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 is set for Sunday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. ET. The event on the 14-turn layout will consist of 70 laps. The weekend kicks off this Friday, Feb. 19, with the BrakeBest Select  159 At DAYTONA presented by O’Reilly AutoParts (44 laps) for the Camping World Truck Series (7:30 p.m. start) while Saturday’s SuperStart 188 At DAYTONA presented by O’Reilly AutoParts (52 laps) for the Xfinity Series gets the green flag at 5 p.m. ET.
