Kaulig Racing Weekly Preview | Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Kaulig Giving and the Cavaliers Community Foundation are partnering together to support Vision to Learn and their work in northeast Ohio:

  • Approximately 50 K-8 students from Whitney Young Elementary, a part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, received an eye exam in February. Last week, the students received their eyeglasses with a celebration at the school that was attended by Kaulig Giving, the Cavaliers Community Foundation, and members from the media. On Tuesday, March 11, the celebration will continue, and the partnership will be highlighted during halftime of the Cleveland Cavaliers game, where Matt Kaulig will be present.
  • Through this partnership, a total of 330 K-12 students in Cleveland-area schools will be identified by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and served by Vision to Learn, which has provided more than 633,000 eye exams to students, and operates in 14 states and Washington, DC.

AJ Allmendinger to be Inducted in the West Coast Stock Car/Motorsports Hall of Fame:

  • AJ Allmendinger will be honored as a Class of 2025 Inductee in the West Coast Stock Car/Motorsports Hall of Fame on Thursday, March 13th, 2025. The Class of 2025’s induction will take place at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas, where Team President, Chris Rice, will present Allmendinger with his achievement. Team Owner, Matt Kaulig, and Kaulig Racing teammates, Christian Eckes and Daniel Dye, will also be in attendance.

At Las Vegas Motor Speedway:

  • Ty Dillon will make his 250th-career NASCAR Cup Series start this weekend when he takes the green flag for Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
  • In the NASCAR Cup Series, Kaulig Racing has made 12 starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, earning two top-10 finishes.
  • The team has earned two NASCAR Xfinity Series wins at Las Vegas, both coming from AJ Allmendinger, most recently in 2024. The team has also earned three pole awards seven top five and 23 top-10 finishes at the track.

Ty Dillon will be at the NASCAR Classics Merchandise trailer from 12:45 -1:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, to meet fans and sign autographs.

At Las Vegas:

Dillon has 11 previous Cup Series starts at the 1.5-mile Nevada track with a career-best finish of 10th in the 2020 event.
In addition to his Cup Series starts, Dillon has seven starts in the Xfinity Series with a career-best finish of seventh in 2016. He also has one pole starting position and 26 laps led in the series.
In the Craftsman Truck Series, Dillon has three starts with a best finish of fourth in the 2013 event where he started from the pole and led 21 laps. In total Dillon has led 26 laps in the series at the Las Vegas track and earned two top-10 finishes.
 
“Las Vegas [Motor Speedway] is a track that early in my career in the Cup Series wasn’t a very good track for me, but over the last three or four years, especially with the next gen car, I’ve seen mass improvements on results and confidence around the track. I’m feeling pretty strong, and I feel like this year we’re going to have a good opportunity to go in there and have a good run. I think Kaulig Racing always has good success at Las Vegas, especially in the Xfinity Series, so there are some good vibes around the racetrack. Williams has made 13 starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the Xfinity Series. His best finishing position came in the second race of the 2020 season, where he took the checkered flag in 13th after qualifying 20th.
In Williams’ first start with Kaulig Racing at Las Vegas, he clawed back from a 32nd-place starting spot to finish 14th. He led 10 laps after going off pit cycle during the race’s long green-flag run in Stage 3.

  • In 22 NASCAR Cup Series starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS), Spire Motorsports has logged two top-15 and six top-20 finishes. Carson Hocevar, driver of the team’s No. 77 Chevrolet, matched a team-best 15th-place result in the series’ March 2024 visit to Las Vegas.   • Last weekend at Phoenix Raceway, Haley started eighth – his best qualifying effort of 2025 – but a Lap 99 multi-car incident ended his day early, leaving him 34th in the final rundown.
  • The three-time NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race winner will pull double duty this weekend and handle the driving chores for Spire Motorsports No. 07 Gainbridge Chevy Silverado in Friday’s Ecosave 200.
  • Haley owns three CRAFTSMAN Truck Series starts at the “Diamond in the Desert,” highlighted by a third-place finish in October 2018. In NASCAR Xfinity Series competition, Haley has collected four top 10s, including a series/venue best eighth-place effort in March 2021.
  • Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 will mark Haley’s 149th career NASCAR Cup Series start. Atop the No. 7 Box – Crew Chief Rodney Childers

  • Crew chief Rodney Childers has called 25 races at the “Diamond in the Desert,” collecting one pole, two wins, 12 top fives and 23 top 10s. Childers-prepared cars have led a total of 622 laps at the 1.5-mile tri-oval.
  • The Mooresville, N.C., native earned his first victory at LVMS in 2015 with Kevin Harvick. He clocked 75 laps of the event’s fastest laps and led 142 en route to the win.
  • Childers took victory in the 2018 edition of the Pennzoil 400 as Harvick led 214 of the event’s 267 laps in a dominant showing. He calculated an impressive 1.49 average running position and 150.0 driver rating.
  • The veteran crew chief has participated in 680 NASCAR Cup Series races where he’s earned 34 poles, 40 wins, 178 top-five and 298 top-10 finishes. He also earned 2014 championship honors with Harvick.
  • Childers’ 40 wins at NASCAR’s premier level ties him for second-most amongst all active crew chiefs in the Cup Series garage.

Michael McDowell – Driver, No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet ZL1

  • Michael McDowell will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No. 71 Group1001 Chevrolet ZL1 in Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
  • The father of five calls Glendale, Ariz., home, but early in his racing career, McDowell and his older brother, Billy, moved to Las Vegas to turn their karting dreams into a reality. The McDowell family built and sold karts in the area to kickstart their racing careers, laying the foundation for a 20-year career and wins in NASCAR’s highest national touring series.

  • Last week at Phoenix Raceway, McDowell qualified seventh but was forced to start at the rear of the field after the team changed a steering rack on Sunday morning. While driving through the field, McDowell encountered an issue with the right-rear tire, sending the No. 71 Workforce Chevrolet into the wall. The team went to the garage to make repairs, including replacing a right-front toe link, and rejoined the field 18 laps down. Shortly after returning to the track, the team had another right-rear tire go down. He ultimately finished 27th, 22 laps off the pace.
  • The Cup Series veteran earned the Xfinity Fastest Lap on Sunday, clocking a 27.020 second lap time (133.235 miles per hour) late in the event. This marks the team’s second such award this season, also earning the championship bonus point during the Daytona 500.
  • Last Saturday’s qualifying session marked the first time in Spire Motorsports’ history in which all three entries qualified inside the top 10.
  • Tuesday, March 11th marks Michael McDowell day in Glendale, Ariz. The driver was given the keys to the city in 2021 after taking home the checkered flag in the Daytona 500.

  • Crew chief Travis Peterson joined Spire Motorsports following the 2024 season after spending 2023-2024 alongside McDowell at Front Row Motorsports.
  • In four previous races at LVMS in the crew chief role, Peterson has called two top-20 and four top-25 finishes.
  • In his previous role as race engineer for Hendrick Motorsports, Peterson was instrumental in Dale Earnhardt Junior’s fourth-place finish in the 2015 event at LVMS.

Carson Hocevar – Driver, No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet ZL1

  • Carson Hocevar is set to make his 50th NASCAR Cup Series start at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as he pilots the No. 77 Delaware Life Chevrolet ZL1 for Spire Motorsports.
  • Sunday’s race will mark Hocevar’s fourth Cup Series start at LVMS. In his three previous races at the 1.5-mile track, Hocevar has an average start of 15th and an average finish of 24.7. His best finish came last March when he started 14th and finished the 267-lap race in 15th.

The mile-and-a-half tracks have always been some of my favorites. I feel like those are where I’ve had the most consistency so I’m eager to see where we end up during practice and qualifying.”

Allmendinger Honored as a Class of 2025 Inductee

 
Lexington, N.C. (March 11, 2025) – AJ Allmendinger has raced for nearly three decades, and now his accomplishments will be remembered forever. The 43-year-old California native is set to be inducted into the West Coast Stock Car/Motorsports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2025.

On March 13th, Allmendinger will join west coast legends, such as, Rick Mears, Jeff Gordon, Hershel McGriff, Dan Gurney, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch in the fabled West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame.

Allmendinger has left his mark in several racing disciplines, including open wheel, CART and Indy Car, IMSA and sports cars, and still remains a highly competitive racer in NASCAR, racing for an Xfinity Series championship as recently as last November. Allmendinger burst onto the NASCAR scene as a road-racing ace, and continues as one of the winningest road racers in NASCAR history, but has also established himself as a consistent force every weekend now as a full-time competitor in NASCAR’s premier Cup Series. Allmendinger drives the No. 16 Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, his seventh year with the organization.

“It hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” said Allmendinger. “It’s unique to be in a situation receiving this honor, knowing I still have the opportunity to go out every weekend with Kaulig Racing and continue to build on my career and what we have accomplished together. It’s special to share this accomplishment with my wife, Tara, and our son, Aero James. I love having Aero at the racetrack, and I know having him be as a part of this will make it emotional and a lasting memory.”

Kaulig Racing Team Owner, Matt Kaulig, reflects on the impact Allmendinger has had since joining the team in 2019.

“I think everybody will agree that AJ has really made Kaulig Racing to be what it is today,” said Kaulig. “It changed our lives when we brought AJ into the fold on a part-time basis and really started running up front and winning races.”

Allmendinger’s determination and competitive drive brings a pressure on himself and Kaulig Racing to compete with the best.

“To be a professional race car driver, you have to be competitive,” continued Kaulig. “AJ is probably the most competitive person that I have ever met. On the racetrack, he can handle the pressure he puts on himself to perform at the highest level of our sport every week, and he does it for all the men and women involved in every aspect of our race team.”

Online tire retailer will sponsor three drivers in seven Xfinity Series races

“It’s great to go back to Las Vegas. It will be my first time on the grounds since the win. That night was obviously such a milestone for myself, and from a confidence standpoint, I know I can get the job done at that facility. Coming off a couple bad weeks, it sticks in your mind when you have a multiple weekends between races. My motivation for the weekend is definitely at a heightened level since I know I run well at Vegas. But, in terms of preparation, it is just another race.”

A pair of incidents that were not of your doing derailed your first two races of the season. What does the bounce back look like after a couple weeks off?
“I’d like to think this is where the real season starts. We have obviously had a slow start to the year and ended up at the infield care center two weeks in a row. I enjoy going to both Daytona and Atlanta, but they are wild cards, and in a lot of cases, you don’t control your own destiny. We are now opening the schedule up to some places where we will see who the contenders are and who brings the fastest trucks week in and week out.”

  • Veteran crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion will call the shots for Rajah Caruth and the No. 71 team in 2025.
  • The 52-year-old has called 11 CRAFTSMAN Truck Series races at the “Diamond in the Desert,” collecting four top 10s and six top 15s. Zane Smith’s sixth-place finishes in 2020 and 2021 are a venue-best for Manion.
  • The Boylston, Mass., native helped Steve Park to a fourth-place finish in the 2003 Xfinity Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway during his time at Chance 2 Motorsports.

  • Andres Perez de Lara will pilot the No. 77 Telcel Chevrolet Silverado for Spire Motorsports in the Ecosave 200 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
  • Last time out at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the Mexico City native started 14th and was pleased with the speed and handle of his Telcel Silverado through the first half of the event. Crew chief Chad Walter made the call for fuel only during the final stage break, allowing the young driver to restart third behind teammate Rajah Caruth. He was then involved in a Lap-74 incident, resulting in heavy damage to the left-front corner of his Chevrolet. The team returned to competition but retired from the event after a severe tire rub developed. They were credited with a 27th-place finish.
  • The 19-year-old will make his first start at the 1.5-mile oval this weekend. Perez de Lara has made six starts on 1.5-mile ovals in the ARCA Menards Series, collecting one top-five and three top-10 finishes, while claiming the pole position in the 2023 event at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“Most of the tracks that we are going to this year will be new to me. Thankfully, me and the 77 team have been working in the simulator to get me familiar with the track. We are going to control everything we can on our side to ensure we are ready to go once we hit the track Friday. Spire has a great 1.5-mile package, so I am really excited about the race and know we have Silverados that can deliver good results. This is the first time this season were we will get to see all of the preparation we have put in over the offseason. Super excited to go out west to Vegas.

You ran well on Intermediate tracks in ARCA. How do you think that will translate over to the truck?
“It is definitely a different type of racing compared to ARCA, but I think I will be able to adapt quickly to driving the truck. Running well at 1.5-mile tracks in ARCA gives me confidence I can do it in trucks as well. Las Vegas is the perfect intermediate track to go to first this year. Rajah (Caruth) and Chad (Walter) won this race last year, so that gives me all of the confidence to go out and run well.”

Atop the No. 77 Box – Crew Chief Chad Walter

  • Crew chief Chad Walter will be atop the box for Andres Perez de Lara and the No. 77 team in 2025.
  • Last season, the Albion, N.Y., native led Rajah Caruth to victory in the CRAFTSMAN Truck Seres 200-mile event at the “Diamond in the Desert,” marking the first triumph in the series for both the veteran crew chief and young driver.
  • The 53-year-old has called eight Xfinity Series events at LVMS, earning one win and four top-10 finishes. Walter propelled the No. 5 JR Motorsports team to Victory Lane at the track in 2008, with NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin leading 81 laps en route to his penultimate victory in the series.

The second month of the NASCAR season starts in Las Vegas with a tripleheader featuring all three of the sports top touring series. The weekend kicks off with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returning from a two-week break on Friday night. The NASCAR Xfinity and NASCAR Cup Series will follow with races on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, respectively.

VEGAS PROVES TO BE LOGANO’S BEST

Joey Logano has four career victories at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which is tied for the most he has at any track on the circuit (Phoenix Raceway). Logano has strung together Ford’s last four wins at the 1.5-mile track, including last year’s playoff race in October, and in 23 career starts he has a finishing average of 9.5. That ranks as his statistical best on tracks where has made at least 10 series starts. Much of the success the driver of the No. 22 has enjoyed is a result of qualifying well. Logano has an average starting spot of 7.9 at Las Vegas, which is also a personal-best, and includes three pole positions.

BERRY FINDING HIS RHYTHM

It hasn’t taken long for Josh Berry and the Wood Brothers to find their chemistry, especially when it comes to the last two oval races. Berry is coming off his first top-five finish with the organization after a fourth-place run last weekend at Phoenix Raceway. That came two weeks after he had a chance to win in Atlanta, where he led a career-high 56 laps before getting involved in an accident on the final lap while running inside the top 10.

BUESCHER CONTINUES CONSISTENT START

Chris Buescher registered his first top-five run of the season with a fifth-place finish last Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, extending his solid start to 2025. The Texas native now has three top-10 efforts through the first four events and ranks 10th in the series point standings. In 16 career Cup starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Buescher has two top 10s, including a 10th-place finish in October’s playoff race.

SMITH AND VEGAS

Zane Smith appears to be enjoying his return to Front Row Motorsports and his ninth-place finish last weekend at Phoenix Raceway is the most recent example. Smith, who also ended up 11th in Atlanta, has gained 10 spots in the point standings since getting involved in an accident in the season-opening Daytona 500. He comes into this weekend’s race, which will be his third career series start at Las Vegas, 26th overall.

JOEY LOGANO: “We say that’s a racetrack where it just takes everything to be good. You have to have a fast car, you have to be able to take the bumps good, you have to have good horsepower, you have to have good fuel mileage, you have to have the right strategy, and it is the Pennzoil 400, right? We drive in the Pennzoil car there. So you want to make sure you have a good run there, a good show. I don’t see why we wouldn’t be good there. I’m looking forward to getting out to Vegas and seeing what we’ve got.”

ROUSH RULES

There have been two RFK drivers who have posted consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victories at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Jeff Burton won in 1999 and 2000 while Matt Kenseth did it in his championship season of 2003 and 2004. In fact, RFK has been a force in both the NASCAR Cup and NASCAR Xfinity Series at the 1.5-mile facility. The organization has posted seven NCS wins and six NXS victories for a total of 13 overall, which includes back-to-back weekend sweeps in 1999 and 2000. In addition, RFK has three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series triumphs.

SWEEP DELIGHT FOR KESELOWSKI

Brad Keselowski completed a weekend sweep in 2014 after taking the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series events on consecutive days. Even though Keselowski led the most laps in the NCS race, he needed a little bit of luck and got it on the final lap when Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was in conservation mode, ran out of gas on the back straightaway. That enabled Keselowski to win going away and post the first of his six victories that season.

SIEG’S SEASON BEST

Ryan Sieg moved into the top 10 of the NASCAR Xfinity Series point standings for the first time this season after his fourth-place run last weekend at Phoenix Raceway. Sieg, who is still in search of his first series win, heads back to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the first time since finishing second in last year’s playoff race. He also had a seventh-place showing in this event a year ago.

THREE FORD DRIVERS IN TOP FIVE

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is back in action for the third time this season and Ford holds a majority of the top five spots in the standings. Defending champion Ty Majeski sits second and is only one point off the overall lead, while Front Row Motorsport’s Chandler Smith is third and ThorSport’s Ben Rhodes is fifth. Both Smith (2022) and Rhodes (2017) have found Victory Lane at Las Vegas Motor Speedway while Majeski has a streak of three straight Top-10 finishes at the track.
