Joe Gibbs Racing shifts half of Cup Series crew chief lineup in 2025

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) announced a new role and new team for crew chiefs Chris Gabehart and Chris Gayle, respectively, for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season.

For the upcoming season, Gabehart will be assuming the role as JGR’s Competition Director while Gayle will shift from JGR’s No. 54 Toyota Camry XSE team to the No. 11 Toyota Camry XSE team, where he will be paired with veteran driver Denny Hamlin.

The news comes as both Gabehart and Gayle are coming off their respective roles as crew chiefs for the Nos. 11 and 54 JGR Toyota teams, the latter of which is piloted by driver Ty Gibbs, in the Cup Series.

“We have a lot of pride in the depth of talent we have throughout our organization,” Joe Gibbs, owner and founder of Joe Gibbs Racing, said. “Chris Gabehart will now be an asset across all four of our teams as competition director and we thought it was important to have him transition into his new role immediately. Chris Gayle will bring his own perspective to the 11 team while also maintaining the consistency and continuity they have developed with Denny [Hamlin] over the past several years. While we are still in the process of finalizing the new crew chief for the 54 team, we believe all these moves ultimately make our team stronger as we prepare for 2025.”

Gabehart, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, who graduated from Purdue University with a mechanical engineering degree, made his crew chief debut in the Xfinity Series in 2016, where he was paired with Erik Jones at JGR. The following season, he made his Cup Series crew chief debut on an interim role with Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 Toyota team at Richmond Raceway, where Hamlin finished fifth.

After accumulating a total of nine Xfinity victories between 2016 to 2018, Gabehart was promoted to the Cup Series to serve as a full-time crew chief for Hamlin and the No. 11 team in 2019. Commencing his Cup crew chief career with his first career victory in the 61st running of the Daytona 500, Gabehart and Hamlin would accumulate a total of 22 victories through 209 events (2019-24). In addition to making the Playoffs throughout their six-year journey, they also made the Championship 4 round from 2019 to 2021, where they finished as high as third place in the final standings during the latter season.

Through 209 appearances as a Cup Series crew chief, Gabehart has also recorded 11 poles, 90 top-five results and 120 top-10 results, all while working atop the No. 11 JGR Toyota pit box and paired with Hamlin as he prepares to etch a new chapter with his new role in 2025.

Meanwhile, Gayle, a native of Little Rock Arkansas, and a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Mechanical Engineering degree, made his crew chief debut in 2013, where he was paired with Elliott Sadler at JGR in the Xfinity Series. During the season, he made his Cup crew chief debut with Sadler at Kansas Speedway, where Sadler finished 40th.

Four years later, Gayle became a full-time crew chief in the Cup Series for the first time, where he was paired with Erik Jones at Furniture Row Racing. After notching the 2017 Rookie-of-the-Year title, both Gayle and Jones moved back to Joe Gibbs Racing and notched their first Cup career victory at Daytona International Speedway in July. Gayle would continue to work with Jones over the next two seasons, where they won the 2019 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, before he transitioned back down to the Xfinity Series during his next two years.

After capturing the 2022 Xfinity Series championship with Ty Gibbs, Gayle moved back up to the Cup Series and continued to work with Gibbs as his crew chief in 2023, where Gibbs captured the Rookie-of-the-Year title while piloting the No. 54 JGR Toyota entry. Thompson, CT – (November 20, 2024) – Race of Champions and Thompson (CT) Speedway management have come to an agreement for the iconic facility to host the historic 75th annual Race of Champions to be held as part of the 63rd annual World Series Weekend on Saturday, October 11, 2025 bringing two great modified racing traditions together.

The 75th annual Race of Champions will be a 150-lap event paying $12,500-to-win as well as a spot on the legendary Al Gerber Memorial trophy. The race will remain similar to past events, with pit stops as it has had in the past. Three (3) crew members will be permitted over and only one (1) tire will be permitted to be changed per caution to maintain the strategy and competition that the event has shown in past years.

Race of Champions management is also announcing that the September 12, 13 and 14 event will remain “Race of Champions Weekend” at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, PA. The event weekend will highlight each of the Race of Champions “Family of Series” in addition to the Modified Series being highlighted in a race on Saturday, September 12 as part of the weekend. The remainder of the schedule for the Lake Erie event will be released at a later date.

The Race of Champions Modified Series is also scheduled to appear at Lake Erie Speedway on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

FLORENCE, S.C.: While most racing divisions are idle for the winter, Late Models will roar to life this weekend at Florence (S.C.) Speedway for the prestigious South Carolina 400.

On the heels of a competitive top-five finish this past weekend at New River All-American Speedway in last Saturday night’s Battle of the Stars race, zMAX CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car Tour standout Treyten Lapcevich eyes not only another strong weekend of racing but also the opportunity to capture the attention of the audience with a pivotal victory at the iconic South Carolina short track.

Armed with the strength of his Chad Bryant Racing team and a defiant game plan, Lapcevich is looking to pick up the pieces from his spring zMAX CARS Tour appearance at the Florence, S.C. short-track and be a contender in what is wildly expected to be one of the most competitive races of the year.

“I’m really excited to get back into the seat at Florence on Saturday,” said Lapcevich. “(It’s) definitely going to be a very competitive field of cars, but I believe that the Chad Bryant Racing No. 77 team is up for the challenge.”

To help with his second Florence Speedway start, Lapcevich relies heavily on the experience of his car owner and crew chief, former ARCA Menards Series championship crew chief Chad Bryant.

“This is a race that Chad (Bryant) has had a lot of success at in the past, so it’s good to have that advice and knowledge on our side,” added Lapcevich. “I’ve been watching old races all week long and trying to develop as much knowledge as I can.”

Finishing just outside the top-10 in the spring in zMAX CARS Tour competition, Lapcevich is well aware of what it will take to try and stay ahead of the competition on Nov. 23.

“When we were at Florence earlier this year with the CARS Tour and had a decent showing,” recalled Lapcevich. “We qualified fourth and finished just outside the top-10 after struggling late in the race. It’s undoubtedly a difficult track, especially with how abrasive it is on the tires.

“That was a good experience for me to have prior to the race this weekend. I’m looking to apply what I learned to testing to make sure we make the right adjustments and pace myself the right way in the race.”

Knowing this weekend’s annual fall contest will feature an array of competitors of various disciplines and clout, Lapcevich is remaining focused on the job at hand. He hopes a respectful but competitive performance will earn him the respect he continues to try to gain both on and off the race track.

“I think there’s no doubt that the competition will be tough this weekend,” reflected Lapcevich. “I compare it similarly to Martinsville earlier this year, but that being said, we’ve run in high competition with the CARS Tour all year.

Our goal remains the same; we just have to focus on how our car is handling and not get too caught up in the speed charts during practice. It’s great that Dale (Earnhardt Jr.) comes and runs a Late Model Stock Car with us — he doesn’t need to, but he enjoys it. It also brings a lot of eyes to the event, so everyone wins.

“This is going to be my last race of the season with the No. 77 team; therefore, I’m looking to end it on a high note.

To take the checkered flag on a remarkable season as the pilot of Chad Bryant Racing’s No. 77 Evirum |Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship Chevrolet, Lapcevich realizes a good pace and smart racing will keep him in contention for the entire 250-lap race.

“It’s a long race, so I’m just looking to pace myself and be up front to compete for the win at the night’s end,” sounded Lapcevich. “Strategy is going to play a big part in this race, so I think there’s going to be a big focus on that to ensure that we are giving ourselves the best shot at ending up in Victory Lane.

“I’ve had a lot of fun with the Chad Bryant Racing team this year, and I want to end it off on a high note this year.

“I’m going to give it the best effort I possibly can in hopes of ending up in victory lane at the end of the night.”

Chevrolet’s Sixth Title Sweep Across NASCAR National Ranks

 DETROIT (Nov. 21, 2024) – For the second consecutive year, and the sixth time overall, Chevrolet swept the manufacturer championship titles across the NASCAR national ranks – earning its 43rd NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer Championship; its 26th Bill France Performance Cup in the NASCAR Xfinity Series; and its 12th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Manufacturer Championship. This marks the first time in NASCAR history that a manufacturer has swept the manufacturer championship titles across all three NASCAR national series in consecutive seasons.

RFK Tabs Jeremy Bullins to Lead No. 6 Team

Bullins Reunites with Driver Brad Keselowski for 2025 and Beyond

CONCORD, N.C. (Nov. 21, 2024) – RFK Racing has announced that Jeremy Bullins, veteran crew chief in NASCAR, has joined the organization, reuniting with driver/co-owner Brad Keselowski to lead the No. 6 team beginning in 2025.

“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with BK again, this time in the iconic No. 6 car with RFK,” said Bullins. “We were able to accomplish a lot as a team previously, but we had a couple of unfinished goals like a Daytona 500 win and a championship together and I’m ecstatic we get the opportunity to compete together again. From the outside looking in it’s been obvious the trajectory RFK is on, and I look forward to being part of the growth and future success of the team.”

Bullins – a winner of 31 races in the sport – joins RFK after a decade-plus stint in the Cup Series with Wood Brothers Racing and Team Penske, working with drivers Ryan Blaney, Keselowski, Austin Cindric, and Harrison Burton. He most recently led the No. 21 team, earning the organization’s famed 100th victory at Daytona this summer.

Prior, he was paired with Austin Cindric and the No. 2 team, which came on the heels of Keselowski’s departure of Team Penske at the end of the 2021 campaign. Together, Bullins and Keselowski finished second in the 2020 points standings, and won five races in the Cup Series in the 2020-21 seasons.

Bullins’ debut in Cup came in 2014 with 2023 Cup Champion Ryan Blaney, as the two were successful from 2014-19, winning three races with the No. 12 team. Prior to Cup, the Walnut Cove, North Carolina native was atop the box for several drivers at Penske. In total, he amassed 21 victories in the Xfinity Series in just 100 starts.
