Turning Right; Roush Fenway Takes Points Lead to Sonoma

This weekend RFR and NASCAR take their first ‘right-turns’ of the season with road course action split across the country. The Sprint Cup Series travels to the wine country of northern California for a showdown at Sonoma, while the Nationwide Series heads to Road America in Wisconsin.

In the Lead

RFR’s Matt Kenseth continues to lead the Sprint Cup point standings. All-in-all an RFR driver has led the poitns for 14 of 15 weeks in 2012 and in 20 of the last 22 weeks. Greg Biffle is third; 17 points behind Kenseth and Carl Edwards has moved to within two points of the top 10.

Roush Fenway’s Road Racing History

Roush Fenway has made 253 road course starts in combined NASCAR action, having collected 12 wins and 101 top 10s. Roush Fenway boasts four wins in the Sprint Cup series at the road courses and two victories in the NNS. Roush Fenway won three straight Cup races on the road course at Watkins Glen from 1993-95. All-in-all, five different drivers have won NASCAR road races for Roush Fenway.

Roush Fenway at Sonoma

Roush Fenway has one win at Sonoma Raceway in Cup racing, via Mark Martin’s 1997 win at the track. They also have one win at Sonoma in the truck series, with Joe Ruttman doing the honors in the same season.

On the Roster

Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards each have won on road courses in NASCAR action. Biffle has wins at Portland (1999) and Watkins Glen (2000) in the truck series, while Edwards has two wins in Nationwide, including the inaugural race at Road America and at Montreal.

Last week…

Roush Fenway posted a strong run during Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Michigan. Kenseth and Biffle finished third and fourth respectively, combining to lead 55 laps. Edwards finished 11th after starting in the back of the field.
