Edwards Caught up in Early Wreck at Daytona, Finishes 37th

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.  (July 6, 2014) – After rain cancelled night racing at Daytona International Speedway, Carl Edwards hit the two-and-a-half mile track Sunday morning, starting in the 11th-spot. The No.99 Subway Ford Fusion was running with a tight pack in three-wide formation and was caught up in a 16-car pileup on lap 20. The team worked hard in the garage to reassemble the mangled machine and the Roush Fenway driver would come back out, 45 laps down, to finish the day in 37th.

Rain would overshadow much of the Fourth of July weekend at Daytona, beginning with Friday’s qualifying session being cancelled after only one round with Edwards in the 11th-position.

When the Coke Zero 400 finally kicked off it was quickly halted due to inclement weather on lap 5. Edwards would restart in the 14th-position when racing resumed and expressed some uneasiness about the large lead pack that he was a part of.

Immediately before a competition caution was to come out on lap 20, Edwards fell victim to the first “big one” of the day. The No.99 Subway Ford headed to the garage for repairs and would hit the track again 45 laps down, in 37th.

Edwards continued to battle back and gave his team a lot of credit for putting his Ford Fusion back together so quickly. After another multi-car accident, rain once again began to fall at the superspeedway at lap 108 and the race was eventually called – leaving Edwards with a 37th-place finish.

Edwards will return to the track at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 13th sitting seventh in points. Coverage of the Camping World RV Sales 301 begins at 1:00 pm on TNT.
