SMITHLEY DEBUTS AT PHOENIX

AVONDALE, Ariz. — As a rookie testing himself in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Garrett Smithley knows that his first visit to tracks on the circuit will be an adventure.

He rolls onto another new one Saturday in the Axalta 200, the fourth race of the Xfinity season, on the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway. He finished 24th last week at Las Vegas.

“We had a great start in the 0 car to the West Coast Swing, and I hope we can keep our momentum going into Phoenix,” Smithley said. “Even though I’ve never raced in NASCAR on a ‘short’ track, I have made some laps at PIR in the Richard Petty Driving Experience cars giving rides. I hope I can use that to get up to speed and ultimately have another top 25 finish.”
Smithley sits 24th in Xfinity driver points entering Saturday’s race.

Practice is scheduled at PIR at 11:30 a.m. (ET), 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Friday. Qualifying is set for 11:45 a.m. Saturday, with the race to follow at 2:30 p.m.
