As the NASCAR community mourned the death of sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr., which led to Tony Stewart’s decision not to participate at Watkins Glen, the racing did go on at one of the sport’s more challenging road courses.

Watkins Glen might have hosted the action on Sunday, but it was Saturday night at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park a hundred miles away that drew our attention.

Ryan Truex and the No. 83 Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 39th at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sunday afternoon. After racing inside the top-20 early in the event, Truex fought a broken track bar late in the race and was relegated to a 39th-place finish.

Cole Whitt and the No. 26 Bully Hill Vineyard Toyota Camry team finished 43rd at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sunday afternoon. Severe damage from an incident caused by brake failure left Whitt unable to continue in the event after just nine laps.

Alex Bowman and the No. 23 Dustless Blasting Toyota Camry finished 36th at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sunday afternoon. Bowman received extensive front-end damage after being involved in a lap 56 accident, which forced the rookie's BK Racing team to lose valuable time and track position while making necessary repairs.

As the events of the tragedy at at Canandaigua Motorsports Park unfolded late Saturday night and into Sunday morning, I was glued to twitter, searching for answers. I was hoping for the best but fearing the worst. When it became clear that a young sprint car driver named Kevin Ward Jr. had lost his life, I was at a loss for words.

I have put this off long enough. This is my perspective on the tragedy involving Tony Stewart and Kevin Ward. My insight and perspective is this.
