Faction46 Newest NASCAR Team to Continue Petty Tradition

LEVEL CROSS, N.C. (December 9, 2023) — Thad Moffitt, the grandson of “The King” Richard Petty, will make his full-time series debut in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series with a new team, Faction46. The new team is owned by Lane Moore, owner of Venture Food Stores, and will have an alliance with Niece Motorsports. Veteran NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series crew chief, Doug George will lead the team.

The livery of the No. 46 Chevrolet Silverado was unveiled today during the Petty Museum Christmas Cruise-In at the historic Petty’s Garage in Level Cross, N.C. Moffitt and owner Lane Moore were both present to introduce the new team to fans.

“This is the opportunity that I’ve been waiting for,” said Moffitt. “I’m thrilled that Lane has put his trust in me to begin this new venture with him in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series with Faction46. This past year I had a full season the Trans Am Series, but always wanted to have the opportunity to race full-time in NASCAR and begin in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. I’m pretty pumped up about this opportunity.”

Faction46 is born from the mind of Moore and his company, Venture Food Stores. The team will also be sponsored by Clean Harbors, Safety-Kleen, Customers Bank, Pristine Auction, Joe Jurgielewicz and Son – America’s Tastiest Duck, Induction Innovations and Best Working Wipes to begin the season as new partners are brought into the team. Key races are still open for opportunities to partner with the team.

Moore is currently building a retail program with his Venture Food Stores that can help brands and products reach over 800 stores in key NASCAR markets through the race program. The sponsorship is giving Moffitt the opportunity to have his most competitive season in his young career in NASCAR.

“I’ve enjoyed working and getting to know the Petty family and Thad,” said owner, Moore. “It all accumulated to this day and the beginning of Faction46 and what I hope to be a long stay in NASCAR. The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series offers some of the best, most exciting racing for both young and seasoned drivers. I’m proud to be part of the series with Thad as we earn the respect of the other teams. I have to thank Niece Motorsports for their assistance in helping us as we grow.”

Moffitt, 23, just finished his first full season in the Trans Am Series TA2 class. Moffitt, racing for TeamSLR, finished seventh in the championship standings and second in the rookie standings. He had six top-10 finishes. He will make his return to the NASCAR ranks where he’s had success in the ARCA Menard Series finishing fourth in the series in 2021. Moffitt has four starts in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series with a best finish of 18th at the Daytona International Speedway in 2022.

The new Faction46 team can be found online at www.faction46.com and on social media on Twitter (@TeamFaction46), Instagram (@TeamFaction46), TikTok (@TeamFaction46), and on Facebook and YouTube.

WTRAndretti Daytona Testing Report

(BROWNSBURG, Indiana.) December 8, 2023 — The Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti (WTRAndretti) newly expanded three-car stable completed a productive three days of testing at Daytona International Speedway this week. Both the No. 10 and No. 40 Acura ARX-06 GTPs lined up alongside the No. 45 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 for the only IMSA-sanctioned day-to-night testing before the entire IMSA field returns in January.

All drivers with the exception of Brendan Hartley were in attendance for the test sessions around Daytona International Speedway’s 3.56-mile, 12-turn road course.

WTRAndretti will be back to Daytona in January for the infamous Roar Before the 24 on Jan. 19-21 in build up to the Rolex 24 at DAYTONA January 25 – 28. Flag-to-flag race coverage will air on Peacock alongside IMSA.TV. Full WTRAndretti updates will live on all WTRAndretti social channels.

No. 10 WTRAndretti Acura ARX-06 GTP
Ricky Taylor, 2024 Full Season Co-Driver:
“It’s been so cool to see WTRAndretti grow this year. Obviously last year with the new GTP program it grew quite substantially since DPi, and then this year, again, growing to a two car team. It’s something that none of us have experience with together, but everybody has experience separately. So, it’s been interesting to see how everybody contributes to figure out how to optimize our two cars and to learn the most and to work together. The great thing is that, I feel like the team has maintained that sort of tight-knit feel, so it still feels like a family. And it still feels like everybody’s working together. The communication is very open despite there being eight drivers and almost a hundred people at the race track. It still feels like a very open, tight-knit team, which is what always separated WTRAndretti in the past from other race teams. Everybody’s been super fast getting up to speed, so we’ve had to improvise to learn and get a head start for the Roar. And just, I think, setting a test plan for the 40 car and the 10 car separately to learn different things so we’re maximizing both cars to get the most out of it come January.”

Filipe Albuquerque, 2024 Full Season Co-Driver:
“The new season is starting now already. Just a few months after the last race, so for me it’s a bit weird because the team has grown so much for two cars. It’s not just double the people, it’s almost three times more. And especially here we have almost all the drivers as well for Daytona. So dealing with that, especially with me being a part of WTRAndretti the last three years, it’s totally different. It feels almost like a brand new team, and just a few people that are the same. But other than that, these new people gel really, really well. And with the 40 car, Louis we knew from last year, and Jordan already, and the new guys just fit perfectly. We are having a good time, are enjoying going through this process of getting to know each other and we are making ground. Wednesday we were pretty competitive. We know what we get. We are now fine tuning the car to a completely different development than one year ago when we were here in Daytona. So, as always, I am enjoying the time behind the wheel and being with the team.”

Marcus Ericsson, 2024 Rolex 24 Co-Driver:
“I’m super excited to be back here at Daytona. It’s such a legendary race. To be here with WTRAndretti along with the teammates that I have feels amazing. It’s such a great lineup of drivers. It already feels like we’re gelling very well as a group. It’s so many drivers, eight of us, so it’s pretty cool to have so many talented and good drivers in a group like that. Working together with the team here and getting to know the car and your teammates and getting to work together is worth a lot for us moving forward. It’s only my second time at Daytona, second time really in endurance racing, so it’s all very new to me, and that’s why it’s so good to have teammates like Filipe, Ricky, and Brendon. So to learn from them, and listen to them, that helps a lot when you get to grips with this type of car.”

No. 40 WTRAndretti Acura ARX-06 GTP
Louis Delétraz, 2024 Full Season Co-Driver:
“So far, a great two days of testing. Again, it’s our second time with two cars, so a lot of new people and a lot of new experiences. It’s been super positive and great so far, so we can’t wait to get going to the Roar and Rolex next year. We’re doing a lot of tire comparison and a lot of new setup on the car. It’s been very enjoyable so far, and with my three other teammates, who are all super good guys, and looking forward to the week together. I feel like we’re improving at every outing possible and learning about it, which is the most important, because the more knowledge we have to start next year, the stronger we will be.”

Jordan Taylor, 2024 Full Season Co-Driver:
“It’s been a good test. I think the biggest thing for us is getting all the new drivers in the car and getting the seats organized, so by the time we come back for the Roar and the Rolex weekend everyone is comfortable and happy. Then we can just focus on making the car as quick as possible and working on those fine details. This weekend is more bigger picture, getting all personnel in line, organizing on the pit stand, meetings, logistics and those sorts of things. I think we checked off a lot of the boxes that we wanted to check off, and everyone seems comfortable and happy with the car so far, we just need to do some more work before Daytona. I am very comfortable.”

Colton Herta, 2024 Endurance Co-Driver:
“It’s great to be here with WTRAndretti and being able to get to know everybody. I’m really excited to work with this group of drivers, both on the No. 10 car and my teammates in the No. 40. It’s a very different car to what I’m used to in IndyCar, this test has been amazing to learn what it takes to adapt to this car. I’m just super excited to work with everybody here and hopefully have an amazing three races with WTRAndretti this year.”

Jenson Button, 2024 Rolex 24 Co-Driver:
“Well first of all it’s a great experience getting out here in Daytona. The team has been great. I think it’s so important to have a good team behind you when you’re doing endurance racing that really understands this specific race. WTRAndretti have always been pretty special at this race. Also with the drivers, they have a lot of experience racing endurance, and you need a good team of people to help you, because there are certain things you can’t learn on your own as there’s not enough time in the car. So, big thanks to the whole team.”

No. 45 WTRAndretti Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2
Kyle Marcelli, 2024 Full Season Co-Driver:
Here at Daytona International Speedway this week. Obviously so much excitement and energy going into the 2024 season. New program for WTRAndretti, new car with the Lamborghini Hurácan GT3 EVO2, new teammates, new crew, just the whole package. We have a fantastic group of guys, everybody behind the wall, in the garage. All the crew members have been awesome, clicking really well, finding their groove, position, and strengths. The car has been really enjoyable to drive. A lot of evolved technology and tools that are useful and valuable to the driver, so we’ve been experimenting with everything in the test. We’re learning the nuances of this Lamborghini and trying to maximize them. And of course the teammates – everybody’s been in the car at least twice for some short runs to get up to speed, and some longer runs to get a sense of the car and the tire. Overall good stuff, and really excited to come back here in a few weeks to put it all together. I know we’re going to leave here with a long list of to-dos and things to improve, but we’ll be in good shape and ready for 24 hours of racing.

Danny Formal, 2024 Full Season Co-Driver:
“Well day one and day two here with our new Lamborghini Hurácan GT3 EVO2. It was a great first day for us; everyone got a lot of running in. Graham and Ashton had about 30 laps, and Kyle and I about 15 laps. I’m very proud of Graham’s learning of the track, and his traffic management was fantastic, especially in the nighttime where he ran his fastest lap time. Ashton did a fantastic job also; she’s always fast. I’m very happy with the car, very happy with the team. We had zero mechanical issues. The team did a fantastic job to give us a great baseline. I’m super excited to get going for the Roar and the 24 and hopefully see WTRAndretti and the No. 45 on the podium.”

Graham Doyle, 2024 Endurance Co-Driver:
“Day one and day two here at Daytona International Speedway have truly been incredible; we’ve been able to get a lot of runtime in. Ashton and I have been able to get about 30 to 40 laps each, and Danny and Kyle have been able to get 20 each. It’s just been great getting into the car, learning the track, learning how to work through the traffic, and just managing everything. WTRAndretti have done an incredible job getting the car ready and making sure it’s perfect. We haven’t had any issues, and the car’s just been incredible. It’s fast, it’s easy to drive, and I really think we’re going to have a competitive car come race day.”

Ashton Harrison, 2024 Rolex 24 Co-Driver:
“I’m excited to be back with WTRAndretti for the Rolex and getting to gel with my teammates, who aren’t new to me, but we are all new to the Lamborghini Hurácan GT3 EVO2. It’s been exciting to all learn together how to properly drive this new car, and it’s obviously been a really great test; we’ve all gotten a lot of seat time. The WTRAndretti team have really been thrashing on getting this car ready in the short turnaround that we had after receiving the car just a week ago. So I’m really thankful for the crew guys, the team and everyone who’s been putting in a lot of hours, and the fact that we were quick in practice is a big thank you to them. I’m looking forward to what’s to come and am prepared to drive at the Roar and Rolex.”

Development of INDYCAR Hybrid Unit Sees Significant Steps in Preparation for 2024

Collaboration To Take Most Competitive Racing in World to New Heights

INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023) – Since the initial on-track testing of hybrid components over a year ago, development of the new NTT INDYCAR SERIES 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with hybrid technology has passed many significant milestones.

The INDYCAR SERIES 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine was initially paired and tested with the hybrid unit Aug. 16, 2023, at Sebring International Raceway. In just three months, a total of 15,256 miles of testing have been successfully completed with the new power unit among 13 NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers. The much-anticipated debut of the new power unit is expected to launch after the 108th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, during the second half of the 2024 INDYCAR SERIES season.

“The partnership between Chevrolet and Honda has been phenomenal,” INDYCAR President Jay Frye said. “The INDYCAR-specific hybrid power unit is dynamic and an engineering marvel, and we’re completely committed to its successful introduction next season.”

The INDYCAR SERIES, Chevrolet and Honda are working in collaboration on the development of the first-of-its-kind hybrid unit with testing on tracks that mirror the disciplines of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Sessions have included ovals at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Milwaukee Mile and World Wide Technology Raceway, road courses at IMS, Road America and Barber Motorsports Park and the street circuit-like surface at Sebring.

INDYCAR’s hybrid power unit will enhance the racing action with additional horsepower and further the series’ efforts to deliver the most competitive motorsport on the planet. The new powerplant unit will feature additional overtake (“push-to-pass”) options, ultimately giving INDYCAR SERIES drivers more choices and control – enhancing the on-track competition and excitement.

The start of the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season is expected to feature enhanced possibilities of track records with lighter chassis components (aeroscreen, bellhousing and gearbox) prepared for the hybrid addition. Once the hybrid unit is integrated, the remaining 2024 races will feature the intensified engineering and wheel-to-wheel precision of the hybrid power era.

The hybrid system is made up of the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and Energy Storage System (ESS), which both fit inside the bellhousing, located between the INDYCAR SERIES combustion engine and the gearbox. Multiple strategies for regeneration and deployment have been tested as the power unit builds and transmits energy through the MGU before being saved in the ultracapacitor ESS. The additional horsepower is deployed through the same motor generator. Unlike the traditional INDYCAR “push-to-pass” system, the hybrid power unit will not have a restriction on total time used over the course of a race.

Additional testing and continued development of the hybrid package will continue throughout the winter and spring months ahead of the first race in 2024. More information on the competitive launch of the hybrid unit will be announced at a later date.

The 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season begins Sunday, March 10 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding. Coverage will be available via NBC and Peacock with audio coverage provided by the INDYCAR Radio Network, SiriusXM channel 218 and the INDYCAR App powered by NTT DATA.

Ankrum added to McAnally-Hilgemann Racing lineup for 2024 Truck Series season

Photo by Ron Olds for SpeedwayMedia.com.

Tyler Ankrum will be joining McAnally-Hilgemann Racing to pilot the team’s fourth entry, the No. 18 Chevrolet Silverado RST, for the 2024 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season.

The news comes as the 22-year-old Ankrum from San Bernardino, California, is coming off his fifth full-time campaign in the Truck Series and second with Hattori Racing Enterprises. Throughout the 2023 season, he recorded a single top-five result, six top-10 finishes, 15 laps led and an average-finishing result of 19.2 before settling in 17th place in the final driver’s standings.

For the 2024 season, Ankrum’s No. 18 entry, which has been renumbered from 35 during the previous season, will be sponsored by LiUNA! for 21 of 23-scheduled events while veteran Mark Hillman will be serving as the crew chief. Ankrum will also compete alongside full-time competitors Christian Eckes and Daniel Dye, with Jack Wood also joining the team on a part-time basis.

“Joining [McAnally-Hilgemann Racing] for 2024 is an exciting next step for me and a great opportunity,” Ankrum said. “Both teams showed a ton of speed and versatility in 2023, and the results were there to show for it. I’m looking forward to working with Mark [Hillman] and his team and looking forward to being teammates with Christian [Eckes], Jack [Wood], and Daniel [Dye]. I want to get back to the playoffs and I know the potential is there at MHR to accomplish that next year.”

Ankrum, who grew up competing in quarter midgets and late models, is a former champion of the ARCA Menards Series East, which he achieved in 2018 while competing for DGR-Crosley. During the season, he made his first two Truck Series career starts with DGR-Crosley, where he finished 18th and sixth, respectively.

The following season, Ankrum competed with DGR-Crosley in the Truck Series on a full-time basis, minus the first three events due to age restrictions. Despite competing in two events for NEMCO Motorsports in June due to sponsorship issues pertaining to Ankrum’s DGR-Crosley ride, he returned to the latter organization by late June before notching his first career victory at Kentucky Speedway in July. The victory allowed the Californian to make the 2019 Truck Series Playoffs, where he would be eliminated from title contention after the Round of 8 and settle in eighth place in the final standings. By then, he had achieved the 2019 Truck Series Rookie-of-the-Year title.

Ankrum would proceed to compete the 2020 and 2021 Truck seasons with GMS Racing, where he made the Playoffs for a second time in 2020 and settled in ninth place in the final standings. He then spent the following two seasons driving for Hattori Racing Enterprises, where his best points result was a 12th-place result in the 2022 final standings.

Through 113 career starts in the Truck Series, Ankrum has achieved one victory, one pole, 10 top-five results, 38 top-10 results, 144 laps led and an average-finishing result of 16.4 as he strives to return both to Victory Lane and the Playoffs for the upcoming season.

“We’re really glad to have Tyler join the team as we continue to grow in 2024,” Bill McAnally, team owner of McAnally-Hilgemann Racing, said. “Tyler has shown he can get the job done at this level, and we want to get him back in the playoffs and be a strong contender this year. Surrounding him with Mark [Hillman] and the No. 35 team from last season will be a great fit for Tyler and we’re excited he’s joining our expanding program.”

With his plans for next season set, Ankrum’s first Truck Series campaign with McAnally-Hilgemann Racing is set to commence at Daytona International Speedway for the Fresh From Florida 250. The event is scheduled to occur on February 16, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

Since joining Kaulig Racing in 2019, Allmendinger has earned two consecutive NXS Regular Season Championships, 15 wins and 10 pole awards. In 2023, Allmendinger competed in five NXS races, earning two wins, four top fives, five top-10 finishes and three pole awards.

“We feel AJ [Allmendinger] returning full time to our Xfinity Series program gives us the best chance to continue growing our organization as a whole,” team president, Chris Rice said. “He’s passionate, he’s aggressive and he pushes us to keep getting better. We’re excited to see what we can accomplish in the 2024 season on both the Xfinity and Cup side.”

Allmendinger has played a pivotal role in solidifying Kaulig Racing’s growth and success across NASCAR’s premier series after winning the 2021 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard in the team’s seventh NCS start. He went on to win the team’s second NCS race in the 2023 Bank of America ROVAL 400.

“To Kaulig Racing, AJ is much more than the trophies he’s won or the banners he’s hung in our shop,” said team owner, Matt Kaulig. “AJ has always embraced what we are trying to do as an organization, and his contribution to the culture at Kaulig Racing is what truly makes him forever a part of our family.”

Allmendinger will continue to play a vital role in both Kaulig Racing’s NXS and NCS programs in 2024.

“My plans for 2024 have always been whatever Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice think is best for the team,” said AJ Allmendinger. “We’ve got work to do on both our Xfinity and Cup side as we continue to grow but I think we are putting ourselves in the best position to keep improving. With Josh Williams coming on board, it’ll be fun to learn each other’s driving styles and work together as teammates on Saturdays. I’m excited to be a part everything we’re working on at Kaulig Racing and see what we can get done next season.”

Allmendinger’s NCS schedule as well as partners for both series will be announced at a later date.

Extreme H, FIA and FIA Formula 1 World Championship to establish joint Hydrogen Technical Working Group

Extreme H, the world’s first hydrogen-powered motor racing championship, to commence from 2025

7 December 2023, London: The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the FIA Formula One World Championship and Extreme H, the world’s first off-road hydrogen motor racing championship, which will commence in 2025, have today announced plans to establish a joint Hydrogen Working Group.

The group, comprised of representatives from all three organisations including Mark Grain, Extreme E Technical Director – who is leading the series’ transition to Extreme H – Pat Symonds, F1 Chief Technical Officer, and Nikolas Tombazis, FIA Single Seater Director, will bring together their collective expertise in a strategic alliance to evaluate developments and potential applications for hydrogen within motorsport and wider mobility.

The objective of the Hydrogen Working Group between Formula 1, the FIA and Extreme H is to monitor the progression and development of hydrogen technology – both for the fuel cells and battery systems which will be used in Extreme H’s first-generation racing chassis – as well as hydrogen technology within race site infrastructure, transportation, charging, storage and management, and its safety implications.

Extreme E, which debuted in 2021, has already established itself as a leader in sustainable technologies, with a unique racing format that combines off-road racing in electric SUVs, a mandatory gender-equal driver line-up in each team, and a mission to highlight climate change issues and environmental impact. In March 2022, it announced plans to transition to the first-ever hydrogen-powered racing series – Extreme H – from the 2025 season.

Development of the first Extreme H series is underway, with plans in place to launch a prototype hydrogen-powered chassis with its partner Spark with a first full-speed shakedown towards the end of this year, ahead of a comprehensive testing programme in early 2024.

Alongside the FIA, Extreme E has agreed a pathway for the hydrogen series, Extreme H, to become an FIA Championship from its inaugural season in 2025, with the intention that it will become an FIA World Championship from 2026. This planned framework leading to FIA World Championship status, pending the relevant approvals by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, demonstrates the series’ progression since its inception in 2021 and a strong statement of intent for its growth towards its hydrogen-powered future.

As technical regulator and sporting authority of the Extreme E championship, the FIA will be responsible for all technical, sporting and safety regulations for the competition.

There is already plenty of crossover as well as scope for cooperation in the alliance between F1 and Extreme E: three of Extreme E’s teams are owned by F1 World Champions Sir Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button, and McLaren Racing has teams both in Extreme E and Formula E. The two organisations are aligned in their commitment to the development of sustainable technologies, climate change and impact awareness, as well as increased diversity within motorsport.

Mark Grain, Technical Director, Extreme E, said: “It’s a privilege to be working alongside Formula 1 and the FIA as we continue to develop our world-first hydrogen racing proposition. Our transition to Extreme H makes us the pioneers and first-ever testbed of hydrogen technology in motorsport – not only in our racing cars, but also transportation, infrastructure, refuelling processes and safety regulations. It’s a ground-breaking initiative and we look forward to collaborating with Formula 1 and Pat [Symonds] both technically and operationally, as we continue to champion new technologies and break boundaries on behalf of motorsport, with hydrogen at the forefront.”

Nikolas Tombazis, FIA Single Seater Director, said: “As the governing body for both the FIA Formula 1 World Championship and the upcoming FIA Extreme H Championship in 2025, we welcome this latest collaboration. The FIA Technical Department has experience and knowhow in the area of hydrogen technology which we will be bring to the Working Group along with sporting, safety and regulatory expertise. As is currently the case across the entire FIA motorsport portfolio, we will take learnings from this collaboration for the benefit of our sport and mobility.”

Pat Symonds, Chief Technical Officer, Formula 1, said: “Our sport has a tradition of bringing new technologies to the forefront of public perception in incredibly short timescales. We do this by being open-minded to all solutions and embracing cross-functional engineering. With climate change mitigation at the forefront of everyone’s mind we are committed to promoting sustainability and therefore need to explore all areas of decarbonisation of the mobility sector. This must include sustainable liquid hydrocarbon fuels, electrification and hydrogen. This Working Group enables a collaboration which will allow us to gain first-hand experience and contribute to the understanding and development of the many aspects of hydrogen propulsion that Extreme H will embrace.”

The first sport to ever be built out of a social purpose, Extreme E – and the FIA Extreme H Championship from 2025 – aims to minimise environmental impact while maximising awareness, racing in places that have already been damaged or affected by climate change or human interference, and taking fans deep into the heart of the most pressing issues facing our planet’s future.

Further details about the forthcoming FIA Extreme H Championship and its chassis development will be revealed in due course, with chassis testing to commence in the coming weeks.
