Milwaukee Mile Recap: Hocevar qualified his No. 42 Worldwide Express Chevrolet Silverado in third for the 175-lap race at the Milwaukee Mile, in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ first visit to the one-mile track since 2009. Hocevar showed speed, posting the third fastest lap in Saturday’s lone practice session as well. Hocevar ran a clean race, battling for the lead on older tires as the laps dwindled down. The Portage, Michigan native brought his No. 42 Chevrolet home in second after leading 40 laps. The finish marks Hocevar’s ninth top-five of the 2023 season.

Hocevar on Last Race at the Milwaukee Mile: “Runner up is definitely a bummer,” said Hocevar. “I’m proud of the hard work that Phil [Gould] and everyone on this team are putting in. We showed up to the track with a fast Worldwide Express Chevrolet. It was a fun battle for the lead at the end, just didn’t have quite enough to close the deal.”

Starting the Playoffs Hot: Friday’s race at Kansas Speedway marks the first elimination race of the playoffs. Following the race, the field of 10 playoff contenders will be trimmed to eight. Heading into this race, Hocevar currently sits fifth in playoff standings.

Hocevar on Friday’s Race at Kansas Speedway: “Kansas was definitely a heart-breaker last year, but this team has used that as fuel this year,” said Hocevar. “We feel a lot more confident in our race trucks and our position in the playoffs heading into this race. With all of the hard work that everyone at this organization is putting in, I know we’ll have a fast Worldwide Express Chevrolet Friday night.”

By The Numbers: Hocevar will make his fifth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start at Kansas Speedway on Friday night. Hocevar earned his best finish of second at the track in this race last season.

Honor a Cancer Hero: Through the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and the NASCAR Foundation, Hocevar’s No. 42 Chevrolet will honor and remember cancer hero David Whitfield. Whitfield, a beloved brother, son and friend passed away from cancer in 2021.

Milwaukee Mile Recap: As the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returned to the Milwaukee Mile for the first time since 2009, Bayley Currey looked to make his sixth start in the Truck Series in 2023. Currey was pleased with the speed in his GlobalTranz Chevrolet following Saturday’s lone practice session. Qualifying on Sunday morning left the No. 41 with a 14th-place starting spot for the 175-lap race. Currey battled hard all race long, crossing the finish line in 10th, his third top-10 of the season.

Currey on Last Race at the Milwaukee Mile: “The Milwaukee Mile was a blast to race on,” said Currey. “I had such a great time in this No. 41 GlobalTranz Chevrolet Silverado. I’m so appreciative of the opportunity to come out and race fast trucks. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn these trucks and build on this strong run.”

Currey on Friday’s Race at Kansas Speedway: “I’m excited to get back to the track with our No. 41 Unishippers Chevrolet,” said Currey. “It’s fun to drive these race trucks and I feel like we’re really starting to gel as a group. By The Numbers: Friday night’s race marks Currey’s fifth NCTS start at Kansas Speedway, with his best finish of 12th coming in 2021. In six NCTS starts this season, Currey has two top-five and three top-10 finishes.

Milwaukee Mile Recap: Lawless Alan and the No. 45 AUTOParkit team qualified 20th for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ first visit back to the Milwaukee Mile since 2009. Alan battled in mid-pack for the majority of the 175-lap race, ultimately crossing the finish line 21st.

Alan on Last Race at the Milwaukee Mile: “I definitely learned a lot in my first start at the Milwaukee Mile,” said Alan. “Our AUTOParkit Chevrolet had speed, we were just stuck in the middle of the pack for most of the day. I’m proud of all the hard work that everyone continues to put in.”

Alan on Friday’s race at Kansas Speedway: “I’m looking forward to getting back to Kansas,” said Alan. “I have a few races under my belt at this track, and I feel like we’ve learned a lot as a team each time. Everyone in the shop is working hard; our Chevrolets have a lot of speed. I’m hopeful that we can put down a good lap in qualifying and put ourselves in a good spot for the race.”

By the Numbers: Alan will make his fourth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start at Kansas Speedway on Friday night. Alan has two top-20 finishes in his three previous starts.

Honor a Cancer Hero: Through the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and the NASCAR Foundation, Alan’s No. 45 Chevrolet will honor cancer hero Darran Dunlap. Darran was diagnosed with leukemia when she was five years old. She is now 12. They selected Lawless’ truck, because according to Darran’s twin brother Declan, Lawless has the best NASCAR name.

On the Truck: Lawless Alan’s No. 45 Chevrolet Silverado will carry the Independent Equipment Dealers Association (IEDA) and Niece Products of Kansas colors this week at Kansas Speedway.

NASCAR travels to Kansas Speedway this weekend with a full schedule of racing. The ARCA Menards Series and the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series highlight Friday’s action, followed by the Xfinity Series Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday and the NASCAR Cup Series Hollywood Casino 400 on Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Larson won the first race of the Cup Series Playoffs Round of 16 at Darlington Raceway and claimed his place in the upcoming Round of 12, leaving 11 available spots as the series heads to Kansas.

The Xfinity Series travels to Kansas for the final race of the regular season. Ten drivers have already clinched a spot in the 12-driver playoff field -Justin Allgaier, Josh Berry, Jeb Burton, Cole Custer, Sheldon Creed, Austin Hill, Sam Mayer, John Hunter Nemechek, Chandler Smith and Sammy Smith.

It will also mark the final race in the Round of 10 Truck Series Playoffs. Only four drivers have secured a place in the following Round of 8 – Corey Heim, Christian Eckes, Grant Enfinger and Ty Majeski.

NASCAR Press Pass will be available throughout the weekend.

First Run With the Club: Last weekend in Darlington Raceway, Carson Hocevar proved to be a natural fit in the NASCAR Cup Series. In his first race with the LEGACY MOTOR CLUB No. 42 team, Hocevar was fast off the truck, qualifying in the 15th position. Throughout the longest race of his short career, Carson methodically kept his car in one piece, and quietly ran inside the top-20 all race long. Not only was he able to stay on the lead lap and finish all the laps, but he would take home a 17th place finish, scoring the second-highest result that the No. 42 team has had all season.

Sticking Around for More: Before his impressive run at Darlington, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB announced via social media that Hocevar would be tabbed to continue along with the team at Kansas Speedway as well as the following race at Bristol Motor Speedway. At this time, those are the only two races that have had a driver announced for to drive the No. 42 entry.

Double Duty: Hocevar will pull a double duty race weekend at Kansas Speedway, as he will also race in the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series’ Kansas Lottery 200 on Friday night. Currently fourth in the NCTS points standings, he has a 56 point buffer to the cutline, and looks to break through to the Round of 8 for the first time in his career.

Fresh Paint: Keep your eye out as there’s a new look to the No. 42 Sunseeker Resort Chevrolet! This weekend at Kansas Speedway will be the first time that the updated, white version of the paint scheme will be raced.

Lambert at Kansas: Luke Lambert has a large amount of experience at Kansas Speedway, including 19 NASCAR Cup Series starts and two NASCAR Xfinity Series races. In the Cup Series, Lambert’s drivers have delivered one pole (Daniel Hemric in 2019), three top-10s, eight top-15 finishes, and have led 24 laps. Lambert’s two NXS starts have been quite fruitful, with each of his finishing in the top-five both times. Last year, Luke’s guided his team to victory lane in the Xfinity Series race, and in the spring this year, his No. 42 Chevrolet finished 29th.

Honoring a Cancer Hero: As part of a collaboration with The NASCAR Foundation and the Martin Truex, Jr. Foundation, Carson will have a special name riding along with him in his Sunseeker Resorts Chevy. Hocevar will pay tribute to Debra Shelton from Dumas, Texas, who fought Glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. Sadly, Debra passed away in 2017, but her legacy lives on as her family nominated her to be a part of this incredible program.

Quoting Carson Hocevar: With a good run under your belt in the cup car and plenty of experience at Kansas, how prepared do you think you are for this weekend?

“Myself and the No. 42 team had a great 500 mile debut of working together; they got me up-to-speed and felt like we have been doing it longer than we have. So I’m very happy on what we could accomplish in a short amount of time, and excited to have some momentum and a little more confidence heading to Kansas. Luke and everyone was happy with their package in the spring, so I’m excited to plug myself in and see what we can this weekend!”

Darlington in the Rearview: Erik Jones had another successful run in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway as he finished 10th at the track ‘Too Tough To Tame’. Jones qualified 20th and quickly worked through the competition at his favorite track. He earned stage points in the second stage with a third place finish and was seen restarting in the front row during the final stage. The team earned a 10th place finish overall, holding an average running position of 10th, with 88% of laps run within the top 15. This marks Jones’ sixth top-10 finish of the season.

Where it all Started: Jones got his first shot on the big stage in 2015 when he was just 19 years old. Jones drove the No. 18 car, subbing in for an injured Kyle Busch, where he started 12th on the grid. In his first attempt in the NASCAR Cup Series, Jones was having a great day and was even seen leading a lap until catching the wall in turn four with just over twenty laps to go. Jones’ day ended shortly after, while he watched his future boss and teammate, Jimmie Johnson, celebrate in victory lane.

5 in a Row: Throughout his 14 attempts at the 1.5-mile tri-oval, Jones carved out a notable stretch of success spanning five races, each of these finishes being within the top-10. Between 2018 and 2020, Jones achieved an impressive three top-five finishes and two additional top-10 finishes, boasting an exceptional average finish of 5.2 across this nearly three-year period.

Dave at Kansas: During his eight starts with JR Motorsports in the Xfinity Series, Elenz has guided a total of five drivers to one pole position, two top-five finishes, and three top-10 finishes. Impressively, Elenz’s drivers consistently showcased strong performance, with an average starting position of 6.75. Notably, none of Elenz’s drivers qualified outside of the top-10. With the ability to start up front, Elenz’s drivers have been at an advantage, leading for a total of 40 laps across four races.

Jimmie at Kansas: LEGACY MOTOR CLUB driver and Co-Owner, Jimmie Johnson, is exceptionally well-versed at Kansas Speedway, boasting three wins, three poles, nine top-fives, and 19 top-10 finishes, along with an impressive 601 laps led across 29 starts. With an average start of 14.8 and an average finish of 11.8, Johnson has demonstrated consistent competitiveness, with only two DNF’s at the track.

Honoring a Cancer Hero: NASCAR drivers have a unique opportunity to pay tribute to a cancer hero while supporting a great cause. In partnership with The NASCAR Foundation, the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation allowed fans to donate for a chance to win a “ride with a NASCAR driver.” Erik Jones participated in this heartfelt initiative by honoring Perry Whited, a hardworking carpenter who provided for his large family of nine. Tragically, Perry lost his battle with lung cancer on June 20, 1998. In Kansas this weekend, Perry’s name will take the spotlight, riding along the driver’s side door in place of Jones’ name, symbolizing a meaningful tribute.

Quoting Erik Jones: “Kansas has been an up-and-down track for me, but I like racing there. It is so wide, so it gives you the opportunity to move around a lot and run so many different grooves. It is always fun to go there as a driver and search around to try and see what is going to be best while having some fun and moving up and down. I feel like we can go run well there, our mile-and-a-half stuff has been good all year, so I am hoping to have a good race.

  • Cole Custer heads to Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series regular-season finale at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City ready to chase a win and gain more playoffs points before the No. 00 Haas Automation driver kicks off his championship run in the playoffs. Two weeks after the NASCAR Cup Series concluded its regular season Aug. 26 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, the Xfinity Series will wrap up its regular season at the 1.5-mile intermediate track in the Heartland. Custer has had a strong two weeks with a fifth-place finish at Daytona and a fourth-place result last weekend at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, and he looks to continue the strong run this weekend. While his history at Kansas has been a bit of a roller coaster, Custer has been a contender on intermediate tracks this season. Of the 11 intermediate-track starts, he has finished in the top-10 five times with a best finish of third earned May 13 at Darlington and May 29 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.
  • Heading to the final race before the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs commence Sept. 15 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Custer sits fourth in the driver standings and is locked into the postseason via his two victories this season – June 3 at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway and July 2 in the Inaugural Chicago Street Race. He’s accumulated 17 playoffs points thus far, courtesy of his race wins and stage wins this season.
  • Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300 will mark Custer’s fifth career Xfinity Series start at Kansas. His best Kansas finish is 11th, earned in the October 2019 race when he led 85 laps before ultimately falling back. He has an additional seven starts outside of the Xfinity Series at Kansas – one in the NASCAR Truck Series and six in the NASCAR Cup Series. He finished seventh in his lone Truck Series start in May 2016, and a best finish of 18th in the September 2021 Cup Series race at the track.
  • Custer will be pulling double duty once again this weekend as he’ll also be back behind the wheel of the No. 51 Ford Mustang for Rick Ware Racing (RWR) in Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400. It will be his sixth Cup Series start of the season with RWR, the previous five coming July 9 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, July 17 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, July 23 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, Aug. 7 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, and Aug. 20 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

  • Riley Herbst is defending his spot in the 12-driver 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs as the series heads to its regular-season finale in the Kansas Lottery 300 Saturday at Kansas. After two weeks of bad luck and mechanical issues Aug. 19 at Watkins Glen and Aug. 25 at Daytona, the driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) dropped from 11th to 13th and was on the outside looking in for the playoff standings. But his sixth-place finish last Saturday at Darlington eliminated his 20-point deficit to 12th-place Parker Kligerman to a one-point advantage over Kligerman for the final playoff position. Herbst ran in the top-10 for a majority of the day at Darlington before his sixth-place finish and looks to lock himself into the playoffs for the fourth year in a row with another strong run Saturday at Kansas.
  • Saturday’s race will mark Herbst’s fifth career start at Kansas. In his four prior starts, Herbst earned a best finish of ninth in his rookie 2020 season after starting eighth. He has finished outside of the top-16 just once in his Xfinity Series career at the 1.5-mile track. The Las Vegas native has an additional six starts outside of the Xfinity Series at Kansas – four in the ARCA Menards Series, all top-10 finishes, and two in the NASCAR Truck Series. He has a best finish of third in his July 2020 ARCA start after starting on the pole. Best of his two Truck Series starts was a ninth-place run in May 2019.
  • While Herbst is seeking his first career Xfinity Series win, the No. 98 team has already earned a victory at Kansas, when Chase Briscoe led a race-high 159 laps and beat runner-up Daniel Hemric by 1.199 seconds in the October 2019 race. In the NASCAR Cup Series, SHR owns three Kansas wins – one by Tony Stewart in October 2009, and two by Kevin Harvick in October 2016 and May 2018.

The Xfinity Series is heading to Kansas for the first time in 2023 as you had an off weekend when the Cup and Truck Series visited the track in May. How are you preparing for the final race of the regular season?

“Overall, there are going to be guys who are a little bit desperate going into the Kansas race. It’s the final race of the regular season and the final playoff spots are so close in points. They’ll be racing extremely hard, and we want to play it smart as to not put ourselves in a bad situation. At the same time, though, we have to go out there and try to win. It will help make us more solidified in the playoffs and give us more playoff points. We can’t back down and ride around just because we’re locked into the playoffs. Every weekend we show up ready to race for a win, and that’s just what we’ll do this weekend.”

We’re one race away from the NASCAR Playoffs where the real race for the championship begins. What do you need to win a championship this season?

“I think it’s a lot about not making mistakes in the playoffs. You’re going to have a few teams that take themselves out with mistakes and you never want to be that team. We have to be able to put some solid races together to make it through each round. There are only three races per round, so a mistake could cost you a chance to advance. From there, you still have to have solid speed and a smart strategy. The entire field resets and you’re all kind of on equal ground. It’s why those playoff points are so important. We have to be smart and fast. I know that this No. 00 Haas Automation team can get it done, though.”

You’re heading to the regular-season finale at Kansas this weekend and, after a strong effort at Darlington, you’re back above the cutline in the 12th and final playoff spot. What do you have to do this weekend to not only defend your spot in the playoffs but also be competitive enough to go for the win?

“At the end of the day, we show up at the racetrack each and every weekend to contend for the win. It’s cool to be back in the playoffs at the moment, and I’m hoping we can keep ourselves in contention. We never wanted to be in this position with how solid we were at the beginning of the year, but I know that we can bounce back from this. My hope is that we can go out, contend for the win and lock ourselves in the playoffs with a victory, but we’re also going to be conscious of the points. We’re in the better position right now above the cutline, so it’s about finding that balance.”

Kansas has been a solid track for you in the past – especially in the Truck Series and ARCA Menards Series. What do you like about the track?

“I love this track. Kansas is probably one of my favorite intermediate tracks just because I have some solid history there in Trucks and ARCA. Even in the Xfinity Series, we’ve been decent there. There’s a lot that can transfer over from those starts to the Xfinity Series, but ultimately seat time helps you learn the track. We’ve had fast Ford Mustangs each and every week, so now it’s just about leaving the bad luck behind us and making no mistakes. I want to be able to park the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang in victory lane, and Kansas seems like a good place to do it.”

BUESCHER ROLLING

Chris Buescher is peaking at the right time as he goes into this weekend’s playoff race at Kansas Speedway having registered four top-5 finishes in his last six starts. That includes three wins (Richmond, Michigan and Daytona) and a third-place run last week in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. This has been a breakthrough season for Buescher, who has already recorded personal bests for wins (3), top-5 finishes (7) and top-10 finishes (13). In addition, he’s led a career-high 231 laps this year and has an average season finish of 11.9. In 15 career starts at Kansas Speedway, he has three top-10 finishes with his best run coming in 2017 when he was sixth.

LOGANO’S KANSAS PLAYOFF SUCCESS

Joey Logano will be looking for his fourth career win at Kansas Speedway this weekend, which would be a personal best. Logano currently has three career wins at five series tracks, including Kansas, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Michigan International Speedway, Phoenix Raceway and Talladega Superspeedway. He won for the first time at Kansas in 2014, and then did it again one year later in a well-documented battle with Matt Kenseth that resulted in contact as the two entered turn one with five laps to go. That controversial finish marked Logano’s second straight playoff win and led to a sweep of the round as he took the checkered flag the following week at Talladega. His last Kansas win came in 2020 when he led the final 45 laps to beat Kevin Harvick across the finish line and clinch a spot in the Championship 4.

TWO MORE MULTIPLE KANSAS WINNERS

Two other Ford playoff drivers who have had their share of success at Kansas Speedway are Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski. Both have one Ford victory each at the 1.5-mile track, but have multiple wins overall. Harvick, who has three career wins, notched his Ford win at Kansas in 2018 after passing Martin Truex Jr. in the closing laps. His other victories came in 2013 and 2016. Keselowski got by Alex Bowman with seven laps remaining in 2019 for his first Ford win at Kansas and second overall (2011).

HERBST LOOKING TO CLINCH FINAL BERTH

The NASCAR Xfinity Series closes out its regular season this weekend in Kansas with one postseason berth still available. Ford driver Riley Herbst currently holds the final spot on points, but it’s the slimmest of leads as Parker Kligerman trails him by only one. Cole Custer has already clinched a spot after winning at Portland and Chicago.

RHODES ON THE BUBBLE

The final race of the first round is on tap for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and three Ford drivers are currently in transfer positions. Ty Majeski has clinched his spot in the Round of 8 after winning the playoff opener in Indianapolis while Zane Smith (+29) and Matt Crafton (+9) are above the cut line. Ben Rhodes is the only Ford driver currently on the outside looking in, but he’s a manageable three points behind Nick Sanchez for the final spot.

● Chase Briscoe and the No. 14 Mahindra Tractors Ford Mustang team for Stewart-Haas Racing head to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City for the NASCAR Cup Series’ second stop of the season at the 1.5-mile oval. Briscoe owns five starts at Kansas with a best finish of 13th earned in the playoff race there last September.

● 100th Start. Briscoe is set to make his milestone 100th Cup Series start Sunday. He made his Cup Series debut on Feb. 14, 2021, at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, earned his first win March 13, 2022, at Phoenix Raceway and reached the Round of 8 in the 2022 playoffs. In his 99 career starts, he’s collected nine top-fives, 19 top-10s and two poles.

● Prior to Briscoe’s Cup Series debut, he had only competed on pavement in 133 races across the ARCA Menards Series, the former K&N West Series, the NASCAR Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Briscoe jumped straight from dirt cars to ARCA and, just last weekend at Florence (S.C.) Motor Speedway, he competed in his second pavement Late Model race. Briscoe drove his Mahindra Tractors-sponsored Chad Bryant Racing entry to a second-place finish.

● Briscoe owns a pair of top-three finishes in four NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Kansas, including a win in the opening race of the Round of 8 during the 2020 playoffs. He also placed fifth in his first of two NASCAR Truck Series starts at Kansas in May 2017.

● Briscoe won the 2016 ARCA Menards Series finale at Kansas after starting from the pole. He led twice for a race-high 67 laps to secure the victory by 1.464 seconds over Austin Cindric. His 14 top-fives and 18 top-10s in 20 ARCA races that year helped him clinch the championship in his rookie season.

What are your takeaways as you approach your 100th start in the Cup Series?

“It’s definitely crazy to think we’re already at a hundred, especially when you think that you’re just dreaming and hoping to get one. It seems like such a big number, but it’s come on pretty quickly. Having a win in my first 100 starts is cool, but at the same time I feel like I’ve given a couple more away. It is pretty unbelievable when you think about how I barely had 100 starts in a stock car or truck before I made it to Cup and now I’ve reached 100 in Cup. I feel like I’ve learned a ton in the first 100 starts and I’m looking forward to 100 more and what comes with that.”

We’ve seen a lot of speed out of the No. 14 team the last few weeks before something gets in the way of a finish that reflects that. Do you feel encouraged by the progress that’s been made?

“Yeah, we’re definitely seeing improvement. I wish we had the results to reflect that, but we can look back and see that we are making progress and things are coming together. We just have to figure out how to close it out. We’ve had some weird things happen, like the lugnut at Watkins Glen, and some cautions that haven’t gone our way, but overall, it’s definitely encouraging to see we’re headed in the right direction toward the end of the season.”

Last Friday, you competed in your second Late Model race with Chad Bryant Racing and earned a second-place finish for Mahindra Tractors. Do you feel like going back to the grassroots level for that track time you didn’t really get in your development is a benefit to you?

“I’ve always said, to be the best stock-car drivers, we need to be able to compete in any kind of car on any surface. I didn’t do any pavement racing growing up, so it’s been fun to get to do some of that now. I don’t know how much I learn. I feel like I do get something out of it just by staying in race mode and getting the experience of racing against different drivers, but for me it’s been a lot of fun to get in something new and run well.”
