(May 2, 2023) – DGM Racing announced on Tuesday a new partnership with Skip Barber Racing School that will feature Ross Chastain as the driver of the No. 91 entry at Sonoma Raceway and the Indy Road Course. Chastain is no stranger to success at Sonoma. Last year he finished 4th in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. ‘Chase’n Checkers:

Despite being only seven races into the 2023 season, Chase Purdy enters Saturday’s race at Kanas Speedway having already produced a career-high four top-10 finishes and having achieved a career-best runner-up finish earlier this year at Texas Motor Speedway. Purdy currently ranks 10th in the Craftsman Truck Series point standings, 127 tallies behind points leader Ty Majeski. With nine races remaining before the playoffs begin, the 23-year-old driver sits 11th on the playoff grid, 11 points below the cutoff line.

Across five prior Truck Series starts at Kansas, Purdy has recorded an average finish of 17.6. His best result was a 10th-place finish in July of 2020. In last year’s spring race, he finished 13th for Hattori Racing Enterprises, while John Hunter Nemechek won the pole and led a race-high 88 laps en route to victory for the No. 4 team driving the truck that Purdy will pilot on Saturday, KBM-56.

The Mississippi native is in his third full-time season in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and first with KBM. He enters Saturday’s race having totaled one top-five, nine top-10 finishes, and 18 laps led across his 59 career Truck Series starts. Purdy finished 16th in the Truck Series final standings in 2022 after competing in 22 of the 23 events. He posted two top-10 finishes and nine laps led, with a season-best finish of seventh coming at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.

Purdy will be trying to etch his mark in the KBM historical archives this weekend at Kansas as he looks to collect the organization’s 100th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory. KBM-owner driver Kyle Busch collected KBM’s record-extending 99th-career victory with his dominant victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway earlier this year leaving his organization one shy of the century mark. William Byron collected KBM’s record-breaking 51st Truck Series victory in July of 2016. Overall, 18 different drivers have won at least one race behind the wheel of a KBM truck, led by Busch’s 47. Four drivers rank second on the list with seven victories: Byron, Christopher Bell, Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek. Six of KBM’s wins have come at Kansas.

Jimmy Villeneuve is atop the pit box for Purdy and the No. 4 Chevrolet team this season. Prior to being promoted to crew chief for the 2023 season, Villeneuve served as a Truck Chief at KBM since the 2017 season and in that role was a part of 18 wins, a driver’s championship with Christopher Bell in 2017 and the 2019 owner’s championship with the No. 51 team. Prior to joining KBM the New Hampshire native served as a truck chief at Athenian Motorsports in 2015 when the team won with John Wes Townley at Las Vegas. He was promoted to crew chief five races into the 2016 season. Saturday’s race will be Villeneuve’s first atop the pit box at Kansas.

“Obviously I have more experience, but I think that it’s the people that I’ve been around and the team I’m with. Everybody can go out and buy the same parts and pieces, but it’s the people that put it together that make it go fast and everyone at KBM has done a really great job of bringing me a fast Bama Buggies Silverado each week. They’ve given me the opportunity to finally go out and show what I feel I have the talent and the ability to do. I think I’m finally in a position where I get to showcase what I can do, and I think that the best is yet to come.”

Talk about Chase Purdy’s development over the first third of the season.
“Yeah, I have been excited about that. With Chase, and Jack (Wood) and (Nick) Sanchez, they all had a shot to win Atlanta. They were all running up front in the top three, top four. It was really cool, and I was hoping we were going to get into victory lane, but unfortunately circumstances just didn’t work out there at the end on that last lap. Purdy has done a good job. He went to Vegas and was smooth and consistent and ran in the top 10. Texas was a little more of a struggle where he ran 10th to 12th but finished second. Where Sanchez was dominating that race, leading that race. So, there are still some things we can work on to help those guys be better and get better. Top 10s are great, but being up front and contending for wins is what it’s all about and where he wants to be. I know he has been working hard at that. Him and Jimmy Villeneuve (crew chief), they have built a good working relationship thus far. It’s exciting to see that as well as all the drivers and crew chiefs at our place. It’s going real well.”

The Report on ‘Rowdy’:

KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch makes his fourth Craftsman Truck Series start of 2023 behind the wheel of the No. 51 Zariz Silverado in Saturday’s race at Kansas Speedway. Busch opened his 2023 Truck Series schedule with a dominant victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and has finished runner-up in each of his starts since then, including his most recent start at Martinsville Speedway. With his 2023 results, Busch now has an average finish of 3.03 over his last 30 Truck Series starts, while recording 15 wins and nine runner-up finishes.

The Las Vegas native has won three of his last four Truck Series starts at Kansas, including his most recent try in 2021. He was also victorious in 2014 and 2017 but had to settle for a runner-up finish to his KBM teammate Noah Gragson in the 2018 event. Overall, across six Craftsman starts, Busch has one pole, three wins, four top-five and five top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 6.3. In addition to his two Truck Series triumphs, he has two Cup Series wins (2016 and 2021) and four in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (2007 2014, 2015 and 2016).

Busch’s Vegas victory was his record-extending 63rd career Craftsman Truck Series victory. The win was the first for KBM under the Chevrolet banner, after collecting the first 98 with Toyota. For Busch, it was his first win in a Chevrolet truck since November of 2007 at Phoenix Raceway. With his win at Las Vegas, he extended his series-best streak of winning at least one race to 11 consecutive Truck Series seasons (2013-2023).

‘Rowdy’ has won 37.5% (63/168) of the Truck Series races he has entered in his career and has finished first or second in 57.1% (96/168). In addition to his Truck Series leading 63 wins, he also ranks first all-time among Truck Series drivers in driver rating (123.7), average finish (6.4) and is second in laps led (7,769).

Busch, who claimed KBM’s first Truck Series victory at Nashville Superspeedway in April of 2010, will be looking to collect his organization’s 100th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory on Friday. His Las Vegas win was KBM’s record-extending 99th-career victory leaving his organization one shy of the century mark. Overall, 18 different drivers have won at least one race behind the wheel of a KBM truck, led by Busch’s 47. Four drivers rank second on the list with seven victories: William Byron, Christopher Bell, Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek. Six of KBM’s wins have come at Kansas, including three by Busch.

Veteran crew chief Brian Pattie is calling the shots for the No. 51 team this year in his first season at KBM after spending the last 14 seasons atop the pit box in the NASCAR Cup Series. In the Cup Series, his drivers produced six wins, nine poles, 57 top-five and 131 top-10 finishes across 528 starts. In 2012, he guided Clint Bowyer to three victories and a runner-up finish in the Cup Series championship standings. In 2017, he guided Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to two wins and a berth in the playoffs. The Florida native has also recorded 11 wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and now has two wins as a crew chief in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Saturday will be Pattie’s first time calling a Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway. His best result across 26 cup starts was a fourth-place finish with Juan Pablo Montoya in 2009.

The No. 51 team currently ranks third in the Craftsman Truck Series owner’s point standings. Across seven starts in 2023, the team has recorded one win, one pole, 135 laps led, four top-five and six top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 7.7.

Zariz Transport, a fast growing intermodal drayage company specializing in transporting containers from the ports, will be the primary sponsor on Busch’s Silverado for all five of his races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2023. The final race on Busch’s 2023 Truck Series schedule will be at Pocono Raceway on July 22. William Byron will return to the No. 51 HendrickCars.com Silverado May 12 at Darlington Raceway and May 20 at North Wilkesboro Speedway while Jack Wood will be behind the wheel May 26 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Do you feel like the script has been written for you to be the driver that gets the 100th win for KBM?
“Not necessarily — I feel like there have been many opportunities where we would’ve, should’ve, could’ve gotten that 100th win already and we’ve been talking about it for too long. Hopefully we can go out and get it on Saturday with our Zariz Transport Chevy. The way that the schedule has fallen the last couple years with the other guys driving the 51 I haven’t had Kansas on my schedule, but in the past when I’ve gotten the chance to race there it has been a good track for me — have won there a few times. We’re bringing the same Silverado that we raced at Las Vegas and was really fast, so I feel like we will have a good piece to work with. Nick (Sanchez) was really fast and dominated the race at Texas until the very end, so it goes to show that our mile-and-a-half stuff is really strong right now at KBM and that is a testament to how hard everyone worked to make sure we didn’t skip a beat with switching over to Chevys this off season.”

Michael McDowell and the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops Team Kansas Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

Michael McDowell will bring the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops No. 34 Ford Mustang to the Kansas Speedway this weekend.

The race will be the second traditional mile-and-a-half race this season. McDowell finished 25th earlier this season at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway- the other traditional mile-and-a-half race this year.

Saturday and Sunday will be the first of two visits to the track this season.

COMPETITION NOTES:

McDowell and the team will be happy qualifying again after qualifying was rained out at the Dover Motor Speedway forcing the team to start from the back. When qualifying this season, the Love’s Travel Stops team has started inside the top-15 in half of the race events.

McDowell comes to Kansas Speedway with 10 previous starts at the track with Front Row Motorsports. He has finished in the top-20 in six of them.

CREW CHIEF TRAVIS PETERSON:

“We want to improve from that finish at Las Vegas. We’ve run well at all these different tracks, but we didn’t have the best result at our first mile-and-a-half track. We just want to get to Kansas and have a better run than earlier this year.”

DRIVER MICHAEL MCDOWELL:

“I agree with Travis. We just didn’t have great speed at Las Vegas, but Kansas has been better for us lately. Our Love’s Ford has been pretty good at Kansas where we’ve been close the past few races to a top-10 finish. These are challenging tracks, but we’ll work hard to be ready in this short week.”

Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 Speedy Cash Ford team head to the Kansas Speedway this weekend.

Speedy Cash goes back-to-back as the primary partner for Sunday’s race after finishing 25th with Gilliland at the Dover Motor Speedway. Speedy Cash is an anchor partner of Gilliland and the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports (FRM) team this season. Gilliland already has one top-10 finish with the brand at the Bristol Dirt Race earlier this year.

Sunday begins a busy month of May with three NASCAR Cup Series points events and the All-Star race.

COMPETITION NOTES:

Gilliland has three top-10 finishes at the track in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series and last year finished both races inside the top-25. His best finish was 23rd, but completed over 99% of his laps.

“We will work hard because these mile-and-a-half tracks are still a big part of our schedule. There are different things you can do during the race to help with strategy and track position. “I really like Kansas. It’s a fast track and I’ve had some good races in the truck and we weren’t too bad last year. We just needed more speed, but our cars have improved this season.

Toyota Partners with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB Beginning with the 2024 Cup Series Season

PLANO, Texas (May 2, 2023) – Toyota is pleased to announce a partnership with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB beginning with the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) season. With LEGACY M.C. two entries, Toyota will field eight full-time Toyota Camry TRD’s in NCS action starting next season.

Part of Toyota’s legacy includes both of LEGACY M.C.’s current drivers. Gragson made both his NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) debuts with Toyota. Gragson ran 47 races across three seasons with Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NCTS, earning two victories – Martinsville (2017) and Kansas (2018). The Las Vegas-native finished second in the NCTS standings in 2018 – the same season he made his NXS debut, where he finished an impressive second at Richmond Raceway in April of that year driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Jones made history while with Team Toyota as he is the first driver in NASCAR history to earn Rookie of the Year in all three national series. He made his Toyota debut in the NCTS in 2013 and won later that year in his fifth career start at Phoenix Raceway. Jones later earned the NCTS championship in 2015, which is the same season he earned his first NXS win at Texas Motor Speedway. He later moved to the NASCAR Cup Series, where he earned two wins while competing for Joe Gibbs Racing – Daytona in July 2018 and Darlington in September 2019.

The eight full-time Toyota Camry TRD entries are the most Toyota supported entries to compete in the NCS since 2011.

Zane Smith and the No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150 Team Kansas Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

Zane Smith and the No. 38 Speedco Ford team head to the mile-and-a-half Kansas Speedway for Saturday night’s 200-mile feature race. Smith and the No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150 team are the defending winners of this event.

Smith and the Front Row Motorsports (FRM) team has already collected back-to-back annual wins this season. Beginning at the Daytona 250 and again at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA), the team hopes to again repeat in Kansas.

They will prepare with practice and qualifying on Saturday afternoon. The race is set for 8:00 p.m. ET that evening.

COMPETITION NOTES:

The Kansas Speedway is one of Smith’s favorite tracks and the results prove it. Only once has Smith finished outside the top-10 in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) at the track.

In six starts, Smith has one win, two top-five and five top-10 finishes at the Kansas Speedway.

FRM has finished sixth or higher in its past three Kansas appearances with Todd Gilliland and Smith in the NCTS.

“Of course we think we can win it again. I think we’ve made a lot of strides on our mile-and-a-half trucks going back to last year. They have good speed. It then comes down to executing our strategy.”
