Toyota Racing NCS Michigan Quotes — Kyle Busch 8.6.22

Toyota Racing – Kyle Busch
NASCAR Cup Series Quotes

BROOKLYN, Mich. (August 6, 2022) – Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch was made available to media prior to the Michigan International Speedway race this Saturday:

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry TRD, Joe Gibbs Racing

How do you speak to Brexton about the shooting that took place at the Mall of America when you were visiting?

“So talking with Brexton about it. Just essentially, it’s hard to explain to a seven-year old what really happened and what the severity of it could have been, although thankful that it wasn’t more serious than what it was. Just to always be on your toes. He’s to the age right now where in those situations, I don’t even think Samantha would let them be on his own until he was 13 or 14 years old anyway. So he’s always going to have a parent or guardian or something around him for a long time. So all of us have to be mindful in those situations. As to what the best way to do go through that is, I don’t know that we really had the perfect course of it. But you know, we made it through with the best of our information at that point was.”

How do you feel about the last seven races and where are you and the team in preparation for the Playoffs?

“I guess if you look at that dark cloud that’s over me lately, hence the other day, we’re in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot of times. To get Nashville back, that was a second place finish I feel like the worst that would have been was the second place finish. Pocono was the second-place finish. The road courses have been a struggle. We haven’t been that great there, but we had some promise at the Indy road course. Where we were 10th going into that second-to-last restart and got spun out and went back to 30 or whatever it was got tires for the final restart got back to 11th at least. But just before that second last caution came out. I passed the 2 (Brad Keselowski) car on the race track in racing conditions and he goes on to find his way through all the holes and gets a second. You know, so again, it’s just it’s a matter of luck and there is absolutely none following the 18 car right now. It’s disappointing. I’m sure there’s others that don’t have luck either. You look at Ty Dillon who just gets blindsided into a corner so he’s in the same boat, but it’s have to keep going and keep fighting and go into next week. And you know, hopefully this Michigan package will suit our style with the mile-and-a-half style race tracks of speed that we’ve had as a JGR and Toyota group.”

Did you feel you were in any danger on Thursday at the Mall of America?

“There was definitely a sense of danger. A huge sense because all you were told –Samantha called me, we had no idea Brexton and I were actually in line for a ride. We were the next to go on that ride. And she called me and I answered and we skipped right through, going on the ride and went out straight back out the exit. And then we just stayed on the phone together because she told me, ‘there’s an active shooter and shots have been fired in the mall.’ And at that point, active shooter or somebody shooting at another person, whatever shots being fired, you don’t know. So that’s the scariest part is you have no idea what is happening so I’m asking her, ‘where are you? What store is it coming from? What level are you on?’ All those sorts of things to figure out? Am I walking my way right into it? Or am I walking my way out of it? And so there’s chaos. There’s people running this way. There’s people running that way and you’re worried when there’s people running at you okay, are they running away from something so am I going right into the line of fire. You just have no idea so your heads on a swivel, your eyes are wide open and again I was on the phone talking with Samantha and hearing where she and the baby were and how they were doing at getting out. And then she stayed on the phone with me to see you know my path and trajectory to be able to get out and help me with the information that she had. And so again, like I said, you’re just you’re flying blind and you have no idea what the situation really is. But it’s scary for sure. And there’s many other people that unfortunately, you know, go through that stuff. Apparently on the daily. Samantha has gotten a ton of messages that, oh, this happened to so-and-so that I know at a grocery store. This happened to so-and-so I know wherever, this happened to me. It’s just not fun.”

Does it make it more unsettling to be in big crowds after going through this experience?

“All we can do is rely on the people that are here and around us and the security and things like that, that they do their job when we’re at the race track. I’ve had threats of that sort before, here years ago, and I was a little bit sheltered from it. I think I was, I don’t know what, I was maybe 22 or something like that when that all went down. But you would think on the daily that you can go do your job and work and have fans and everybody come out and enjoy something and have fun at something and you know, not feel threatened.”

Did the experience change your perspective on your career being life and death after going through something that could have been?

“What’s important is spending time with your loved ones, while you’re here during the time in which you’re here on Earth. So, you know, having that opportunity to do that and obviously doing what I do is not necessarily life or death, but there is a danger and I assume that risk and know that risk and my family does as well too. So you hope you can pray every day that you’re able to go to work and do a good job and, you know, come out of the race car and go on to live another day. I’ve broken my legs. I’ve broken my foot. I’ve wrecked pretty hard a lot of times and knock on wood, I’ve come out unscathed to where I’m able to see another day, but man, you can be driving up and down the road and you know, get hit by somebody texting and driving. They’re looking at their phone, they’re texting and they swerve over the centerline and if you’re not paying attention to get away from it, you know there can be a catastrophe there. So it’s everywhere. We’ve all seen the movies, on scary situations that can be but you try to live life smart and the best you know how and have fun while doing it without having that dread weighing upon you.”

Does it impact how you look at your future in motorsports or change that perspective?

“This is a performance-based business, so it is life or death fear if you’ve either got a job and you’re working and you’re making a living or you’re at home figuring out what your next steps are. So you know, I’ve kind of thought about that of like, ‘okay, what are my next steps? What do I do if I don’t continue to race? And I have no idea. I have no clue. I’m good at certain things and those certain things revolve around this world that we’re in right now.”

How long did it take for you to meet back up with Samantha?

“From her phone call to me in the mall to getting back in touch with her was I’d have to say five minutes, six minutes. It wasn’t terribly long, but she was out before Brexton and I were and then we were able to find an exit and get out which fortunately it was close to the exit that we were parked. So we could just get in our car and venture around and go pick her up from the exit that she exited out of which was on the other side.”

Is there anything you learned at Auto Club that you can use this weekend for Michigan?

“I’m not sure. I think Auto Club actually kind of falls a little bit into its own. Where I would like to think that this place is a bit more similar to you know, a Kansas Vegas style mix of those places. So I feel like that’s probably what our baseline is built off of and not necessarily a Fontana, which is really flat, really slow. This place is very fast and very momentum driven where you know the loads are significantly different.”

Mazda Unveils 2023 MX-5 Cup Schedule

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (August 5, 2022) – The 2023 Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires schedule was unveiled Friday at IMSA’s State of the Sport presentation, and the growing championship is set for another season of big events at outstanding tracks. Mazda’s signature spec series will continue to hold a 14-race championship over seven events starting in January at Daytona International Raceway and ending in October at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Cup season keeps a good thing going, with limited changes from the current schedule. The season begins in Florida, first at Daytona International Raceway in January and then to the streets of St. Petersburg in March. Storied road courses Watkins Glen International, Road America, VIRginia International Raceway and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta are all back on their traditional IMSA dates. This does leave one TBA, which will be revealed in the near future.

“We’ve listened to our competitors and our fans and believe we’ve assembled a desirable mix of venues,” said Mazda Motorsports Program Manager Jonathan Applegate. “The consistency will only help our teams and staff put on the best racing possible. Our partnership with IMSA continues to be mutually beneficial and is the perfect stage for MX-5 Cup racing. While it’s not ideal to put out a schedule with a TBA on it, we want our teams to have plenty of time to prepare for 2023.”

Operated by Andersen Promotions since 2017, MX-5 Cup will maintain the traditional doubleheader format with two 45-minute races at each event.

The Mazda MX-5 Cup has two more rounds left in its current season; VIR, August 26 – 28 and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, September 28 – 30.

Pedersen Dominates First Practice at Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Friday, Aug. 5, 2022) – Benjamin Pedersen led the opening practice for the Indy Lights Music City Grand Prix on Friday as the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship prepares to race on the streets of Nashville for the first time.

Pedersen, from Denmark, produced a top lap of 1 minute, 21.8473 seconds in the No. 24 Global Racing Group with HMD entry on the 11-turn, 2.1-mile temporary street circuit that includes two trips over the Cumberland River via the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge on each lap. Pedersen’s best time was more than four-tenths clear of any other driver during the 50-minute session.

“Overall, this was a great way to start Practice 1, with being fastest,” Pedersen said. “We accomplished exactly what we had in our test plan, and this place is just awesome to drive. It really rewards being on the absolute ragged edge, and it’s just such a big commitment place. Really looking forward to tomorrow and continuing to push ourselves.”

Danial Frost was second at 1:22.2616 in the No. 68 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing car. Hunter McElrea – winner of the last two series races, at Mid-Ohio and Iowa – was third at 1:22.3069 in the No. 27 Andretti Autosport car.

Series points leader Linus Lundqvist was fourth at 1:22.3188 in the No. 26 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing entry. Lundqvist leads second-place McElrea by 77 points with five races remaining this season.

Matthew Brabham rounded out the top five at 1:22.3457 in the No. 83 Andretti Autosport entry. While Indy Lights never has raced on this circuit, Brabham has experience on the bumpy, tricky layout by racing here in the Robby Gordon Stadium SUPER Trucks series.

Up next is the second practice at 11:15 a.m. ET and qualifying at 3:40 p.m. ET Saturday, with live coverage of both sessions on INDYCAR Live! and the INDYCAR Radio Network. Peacock Premium and the INDYCAR Radio Network will provide live coverage of the 35-lap race at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.

Joe Graf Jr. | SS GreenLight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt Michigan International Speedway August Event Preview

SS Greenlight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt | NASCAR Xfinity Series
Michigan International Speedway | New Holland 250

Fast Facts

No. 07 SS GreenLight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt Team:
Driver: Joe Graf Jr. (@JoeGrafJr)
Primary Partner(s): Bucked Up Blood Raz Energy Drink
Manufacturer: Ford Mustang
Crew Chief: Joe Williams
2022 Driver Points Position: 27th | 2022 Owner Points Position: 20th
Engine: Roush Yates Engines (RYE)

Notes of Interest:

Welcome Back Joe: After stepping out of the No. 07 SS GreenLight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt Ford Mustang for the past two NASCAR Xfinity Series races at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course to attend to a personal matter, Joe Graf Jr. returns to the cockpit for his 84th career Xfinity Series start in the Irish Hills of Michigan.

Full of Energy: Bucked Up Energy Drink and its sister products will continue their role as the primary partner of Graf’s No. 07 Ford Mustang this weekend.

Michigan International Speedway is the 14th race of 2022 and 45th race overall in a multi-year, multi-race deal with the former ARCA Menards Series winner.

For the second time this year, the team will promote Bucked Up Energy’s Blood Raz flavor.

Blood Raz tastes like Inception — or literally any Chris Nolan film — you know it’s brilliant, but you can’t figure out why. I can tell you Blood Raz is a watermelon flavor and you’ll taste sweet summer days by the barbecue.

Or we can say it’s Raspberry and you’ll recall that succulent jam you got from the nice old couple at the farmer’s market.

Blood Raz manages to be sweet, succulent, and tart. And it’s sugar-free. That’s right. Zero sugars. Drink up and taste that ambiguous goodness.

About Bucked Up Energy: Bucked Up started in 2013 when twin brothers Ryan and Jeff Gardner started marketing a product called Deer Antler Spray. After selling thousands of bottles to GNCs nationwide, the company morphed into what is now Bucked Up, a full-fledged vitamins and supplements manufacturer.

The company has gone from its humble beginnings to becoming the No. 1 best-selling pre-workout brand that’s available in over 10,000 stores worldwide.

Plenty Of Other Bucked Up Products Available Too: Don’t forget that Bucked Up Energy now offers more than 10 quenching options, but several of their popular flavors include Rocket Pop, Gym ‘N’ Juice, Mango Tango and Pink Lemonade now include low-stim options.

Low-stim has the same innovative ingredients that make their OG formula so powerful for focus, mood, motivation and energy. Bucked Up made just one small change and they have been surprised by the resulting epicness.

Boasting a modest of 100mg of caffeine, Bucked Up Low-Stim delivers the same energy, focus, mood, motivation – while reducing the common side effects that come from too-much caffeine, jitters, sleeplessness and anxiety.

Thanks For Your Support: With more than 60 percent of the 2022 Xfinity Series season complete, Joe Graf Jr. and SS GreenLight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt would like to thank their associate marketing partners AVOID, Bass Reaper Bait Company, CoverSeal, EAT SLEEP RACE Apparel, fgrACCEL, G-Coin, Gtechniq, HazHeart, Model Electronics and ShopRite for their continued support.

Catch Him On The Dial: Before Joe Graf Jr. straps into his No. 07 Bucked Up Blood Raz Energy Drink Ford Mustang on Saturday afternoon, the SS GreenLight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt driver will be featured on “The Frontstretch” on SiriusXM Satellite Radio Channel 90 with host Pat Patterson LIVE on Saturday morning, August 6, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Graf will also spotlight Bucked Up LFG Burn in several commercial spots during the four-hour program from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Coming Soon Races for Faces: Thinking ahead to this fall, Joe Graf Jr. is readily preparing for his involvement in this year’s myFace’s Races for Faces, an event to raise awareness for myFace, an organization that helps kids and families living with craniofacial differences.

In the coming weeks, Graf will announce his campaign for “Team Graf” allowing the NASCAR industry to join him in his mission to give back to the organization in their 10th anniversary.

After being held virtually for the past two years because of COVID-19, this year’s Races for Faces will be held in person on Sun., Sept. 18, 2022, at Pier 62 at Hudson River Park in New York City.

Sponsor of the Month: Ahead of their upcoming second race as the primary partner of Joe Graf Jr. in August at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Graf is spending the month of July promoting Gtechniq, a leader in automotive protective coatings products

In 2004, scientists at Gtechniq created a superior line of products aimed at perfecting all vehicle surfaces. And over the last 20 years, these products have been continually improved to provide a range that outshines and outlasts the competition.

Gtechniq’s line of surface preparation and finishing products are designed to clean, polish, and protect all automotive exteriors, in a way no traditional wax applications can match.

Stay tuned to Joe Graf Jr.’s social media channels for not only a behind the scenes environment with Gtechniq, but the chance to win some swag too!

Joe Graf Jr. Xfinity Series Michigan International Speedway Stats: Joe Graf Jr. will make his second NASCAR Xfinity Series start at the 2.0-mile oval in the New Holland 250.

Last summer, Graf was running in the top-10 with his No. 07 Power Weld car but was involved in a restart accident on Lap 36 that ended his Michigan International Speedway debut prematurely.

Joe Graf Jr. Xfinity Series Career Speedway Stats: At tracks classified as a speedway, Graf has competed in 43 NASCAR Xfinity Series races. He holds an average starting position of 26.1 and an average result of 25.9.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway | Crayon 200: In Joe Graf Jr.’s most recent NASCAR Xfinity Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last month, Graf and the SSGLRwJL team showcased the No. 07 G-Coin Ford Mustang in the highly anticipated return to the “Magic Mile.”

Graf impressed right away by delivering a top-five effort in practice but started the race at the rear of the field for unapproved adjustments.

Throughout the race, Graf Jr. methodically worked his way through the field and captured a lead lap and noteworthy 12th-place finish. It was his best finish on a non-superspeedway this season.

In the Xfinity Series’ most recent race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Chase Briscoe wheeled the No. 07 Production Alliance Group | Bucked Up Energy Drink Ford Mustang to a top-five finish in the Pennzoil 150.

Sneaker Mania: Along with the adrenaline of the Motorsports competition, Joe Graf Jr. also has a vogue for hype sneakers. In his current collection, he owns and wears at least 90 limited edition sneakers – and his collection continues to grow every month.

The current estimated value of his collection tops $100,000.

From the Pit Box: Industry veteran Joe Williams is Joe Graf Jr.’s crew chief.

He will crew chief his 86th NASCAR Xfinity Series race as crew chief on Saturday afternoon and his first at the track nestled in Brooklyn, Michigan.

In his previous 85 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts, he has collected one win (Auto Club Speedway | February 2022), seven top-five and 20 top-10 finishes.

Hello From The Other Side: Graf Jr. has a teammate at SS GreenLight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt. Veteran David Starr will drive the No. 08 Special Report with Brett Baier | TicketSmarter Ford Mustang on Saturday afternoon for his 11th Xfinity start of the 2022 season.

Starr is set to make his 245th career NASCAR Xfinity Series start and sixth at Michigan. His best Xfinity track finish occurred in the 2017 Irish Hills 250, where he finished 21st after starting 38th for B.J. McLeod Motorsports (BJMM).

Joe Graf Jr. Pre-Race Quotes:

On Michigan International Speedway: “I’ve always enjoyed competing at Michigan, especially with success there in the ARCA Menards Series. I’m glad to be back behind the wheel of the No. 07 Bucked Up Blood Raz Energy Drink Ford Mustang after stepping away to handle a personal matter.

“The outreach of support from the fans and the team has been overwhelming, but I am just looking forward to climbing back behind the wheel of our SS GreenLight Racing with Jeff Lefcourt Ford Mustang and picking up right where we left off at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last month.

“Michigan is such a great place to race. It’s a bumpy race track where the speeds are incredible but it’s so huge it allows for great racing.

“I’d love to get ourselves another top-10 and finish what we started there in the NASCAR Xfinity Series from last summer.”

On Goals For Second Half of 2022: “We made some strides during the first half of the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series season but there is certainly room for improvement.

“We have showcased a lot of speed throughout the season so far, but our second half of the year is focused on execution. If we can continue to carry that speed and follow through with the execution – we should be able to turn some heads with some strong and solid finishes.”

DXDT Racing’s Askew and Smithson Ready to Make Music at Big Machine Music City Grand Prix

NASHVILLE, Tenn., (August 5, 2022) – The streets of Nashville, Tennessee will once again come alive for the second annual Big Machine Music City Grand Prix this weekend, as five different race series descend on the country music capital of the world. DXDT Racing’s David Askew and Scott Smithson will join the GT America powered by AWS August 5-7, each racing their own Mercedes AMG GT3 in the double-race weekend.

Both DXDT Racing drivers are currently participating in their full-season entries in the GT World Challenge America powered by AWS, in which they each share their Mercedes AMG GT3s with a professional sports car racing driver in the Pro/Am class for a pair of 90-minute races per weekend. This weekend, they’ll race their same cars in GT America, a single-driver series that consists of two 40-minute races. Created specifically for bronze-rated amateur drivers, the Music City Grand Prix is one of only two street courses on the GT America schedule, making it an adventurous event for the thrill-seeking race car drivers of the series.

The 2.17-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit will again bring exciting sights and sounds to the musical city, racing in the heart of downtown next to the Nissan Stadium campus and across the Koreans Veterans Boulevard. Last year brought no shortage of great racing, chaos, and carnage as the GT America competitors participated in the city’s inaugural event, but this year, many of the drivers and teams return with a familiarity of the circuit.

David Askew, team principal and driver of the No. 63 Mercedes AMG GT3 will be one of the returning drivers, eager to better his two third-place finishes he achieved last year.

“I can’t wait to get back on the streets of the Music City,” exclaimed Askew. “There’s something about street racing that really gets me going. It’s non-stop chaos! There’s so much going on it’s a real challenge to keep focused on the racing. For me, last year was a bit of a learning experience. Being my first time on a street course, I was super anxious going in. I made a few mistakes but survived and learned a lot. Since last year I’ve done one more street race at St. Petersburg. I learned even more there and will carry that into this weekend. I’m really happy that SRO keeps these races on the schedule, and I can’t wait to get another Nashville race under my belt.”

With 2022 being Smithson’s first full season in SRO America’s GT racing series, this will be his first time racing through the tight turns of the Nashville street course. Askew’s GT World Challenge America co-driver, 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Dirk Mueller will be onside to coach both Askew and Smithson, offering his insights to get the best out of the two bronze drivers.

“I’m looking forward to the streets of Nashville,” said Smithson. We did well in St. Petersburg and hope to do the same this weekend. I’ve heard great things about the fans and the atmosphere in Nashville. It will be nice to get in the car with no pressure and just enjoy racing. It should be a really fun weekend.”

Following the track’s inaugural event, the organizers have made modifications and improvements to the circuit, including opening Turn 11 by six feet for driver visibility, smoothing and resurfacing on the Korean Veterans Bridge and the apex of Turn Five, and a reduction of the track width by 50 feet heading into turn nine.

The GT America competitors will run in support of the NTT IndyCar Series, sharing the weekend with three other professional race series in the three-day festival. Askew, Smithson, and the other GT America participants will have two practice sessions on Friday, August 5 before qualifying and racing on Saturday, August 6. Race one will begin around sunset on Saturday at 8:05 PM, followed by race two Sunday morning at 11:35 AM CT. Both races will stream live on YouTube.com/GTWorld. AUSTIN DILLON QUOTE:

What are your thoughts on Michigan International Speedway?

“We had a strong Chevy at Michigan International Speedway last year, and I expect the same this year. I’m really looking forward to the race. Michigan is a place we’ve run well at in the past, and it’s a place we’ve circled to try and win and lock ourselves into the NASCAR Playoffs.

This Week’s Guaranteed Rate Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 at Michigan International Speedway … Tyler Reddick will be making his fourth NASCAR Cup Series start at Michigan International Speedway this weekend. Reddick has completed 99.61 percent of the total possible laps in three previous Cup starts at Michigan. He has one win in four NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Michigan. The victory came in 2019, the same season Reddick won the NASCAR Xfinity Series title with RCR.

In Good Company … With his win one week ago at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Reddick is one of six drivers to win more than one race this season. The driver of the Guaranteed Rate Chevrolet is currently the fifth seed in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs and ranks 11th in the Cup Series regular season standings.

TYLER REDDICK QUOTES:

Auto Club Speedway looks similar to Michigan. How are they different?

“They may be the same size and shape but the surface age is much, much different. We’ll see if we use resin and if so, how much we use. That will certainly play a role in how the race plays out. Looking back at Pocono, the preferred groove was the middle lane in the resin. It all depends on how well the track is prepared and how much resin is put on it.”

You now have two wins this season. How important is that entering the Playoffs?

“It’s really nice that we’ve won two races this year because we now have more playoff points in our back pocket. We would like to win at other tracks in addition to the road courses but we’ll win where we can for now. We’ve certainly had potential to win at a number of different places. We’ll just keep working really hard and hopefully in the coming weeks win some more races, get some more playoff points, and put our entire Guaranteed Rate team in a good place, mentally and confidence wise, going into the Playoffs.”

This Week’s Bennett Transportation and Logistics Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 at Michigan International Speedway … Austin Hill will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut in the No. 33 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Richard Childress Racing on Sunday. Hill, 28, runs full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for RCR in the No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro SS. He has two wins so far this season with eight top fives and 13 top 10s. SHELDON CREED QUOTE:

You’re making your Xfinity Series debut at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday,. What’s your mindset like?

“This will be my first time on a track like this in the Xfinity car so it’ll be a learning curve but I’m really excited to get there. I have experience at the track in the Truck Series so I know the track a little bit but this is definitely going to be a new challenge. It’s great that we have practice and qualifying to get any extra seat time possible. Our team has put in a lot of hard work and we’ve had a lot of simulator time to prepare for Michigan. We’ve been running very strong in our No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet and this weekend will be no different.”

This Week’s United Rentals Chevrolet Camaro SS at Michigan International Speedway … Austin Hill will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Michigan International Speedway this weekend in the No. 21 Chevrolet. Although he’s never made an Xfinity Series start, Hill has made three starts at Michigan in the NASCAR Truck Series. His first start was in 2018. In 2019, his second start at the Brooklyn, Michigan track, Hill won the race from the sixth position, earning his second Truck Series victory. Most recently, he finished 12th in 2020 at the track. This weekend is a special one for Hill as he will also be making his NASCAR Cup Series debut with Richard Childress Racing in the No. 33 Chevrolet. Hill will be making two debuts at Michigan throughout the weekend.

Indy Recap … Last weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Hill added onto his current streak of top-10 finishes by grabbing a ninth-place finish at the road course. Currently, Hill is sixth in the Playoff standings and is leading the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings.

AUSTIN HILL QUOTE:

This will be your first Xfinity Series start at Michigan on Saturday. How are you feeling heading into the race?

“I’m really excited to get to Michigan this weekend. I feel really good about this weekend especially since I’ve seen success at the track in the Truck Series. I got a win at Michigan in the Truck Series and that definitely adds some confidence. It was always a track I felt confident going to and after the way my team and I have been running for the past couple weeks, I’m looking forward to keeping that momentum going. We’ve put in a lot of simulator time and have had meetings and worked really hard on our strategy for the track. It’ll be a longer race, too, so I’m making sure to hydrate a little more than usual. We’re focused on getting another win and adding on all the points we possibly can as we get closer to the start of the Playoffs. I’m also making my Cup debut this weekend, so I’ve got a lot to look forward to!”

Hardpoint’s Two Car IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Program Pointed For Road America Success

Galante and McAlister Joined by Capestro-Dubets in the No. 22 Racing to End Alzheimer’s Porsche Cayman, with Gibbons, Owen and DeBoer Driving No. 9 Valkyrie Intelligence/Phoenix Global Health Porsche Cayman in Four Hour Race

ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin (August 4, 2022) – Hardpoint’s IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge program resumes its podium hunt this weekend with a two-car effort at Road America, the second and final four-hour race on the 2022 calendar. Joining Nick Galante and Sean McAlister in the full-time No. 22 Racing to End Alzheimer’s Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport for Road America is John Capestro-Dubets. Sean Gibbons, Sam Owen and Derek DeBoer make their first appearance under the Hardpoint tent in the No. 9 Valkyrie Intelligence/Phoenix Global Health Porsche Cayman for the race.

Saturday, August 6’s race can be seen live on Peacock, NBC’s streaming platform, from 3:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. EDT and delayed for cable and satellite subscribers on USA Network in a two-hour show on Saturday, August 13 at 3 p.m. EDT.

Hardpoint News and Notes

Road America is the first time that Hardpoint has run two cars concurrently in Michelin Pilot Challenge. The team will accomplish the feat by augmenting it’s regular Porsche Cayman team with crew members from the No. 99 Porsche 911 GT3 R program. The team will service both cars with the same over-the-wall crew during in-race pit stops.

Though the Michelin Pilot Challenge season opener at Daytona was a four-hour race, Hardpoint’s GS program began at Sebring for round two.

Capestro-Dubets joins the No. 22 Racing to End Alzheimer’s Porsche program for the first time but brings familiarity with the Cayman. JCD, as he is affectionately known, was on pole in a similar Porsche Cayman in the last race at Lime Rock Park.

Galante was the race winner in the ST class of the championship during his title-winning 2018 season at Road America.

With the addition of JCD, McAlister will likely qualify the No. 22 Porsche and open the race, with Galante taking the middle stint. That’s a reversal of fortunes for the team this season, as Galante has previously qualified and started each race.

Gibbons and Owen, along with the No. 9 Porsche Cayman, make their IMSA debuts this weekend. Along with DeBoer, they will compete both overall in the GS class and for a win in the Bronze Cup. The Bronze Cup is open to cars with a full driver line-up of Bronze-rated drivers.

Both have teamed together this season in SRO GT4 Americas, driving the same Porsche Cayman. Prep to turn the car to IMSA specifications included fresh Michelin Tires, setup changes and electronics swaps, as well as other smaller regulation adjustments like fuel cell capacity.

DeBoer has IMSA experience as well, but has also competed this season in a Cayman in GT4 Americas. DeBoer and Gibbons have been teammates in the past.

DeBoer and his family have chronicled his racing exploits, along with their family life, at Fastlife.tv and on Amazon Prime. The show is an all-access pass for viewers to the DeBoer’s dream chasing journey and a look inside their ups, downs, challenges, and achievements.

The Racing to End Alzheimer’s program continues to push toward its goal of 222 names place on the race car by season’s end. A $250 donation, which is matched by Legisitics, Inc., allows fans to place the name of a loved one who has been touched by the cruel disease on the race car for the remainder of the season. Currently, nearly 150 names are on the car, with a late push to up that count for the final two races of the season.

The first practice session of the weekend was an hour-long effort on Thursday afternoon. The team used the session for each of the new drivers to get a feel for the car and the track in a Michelin Pilot Challenge session.

Hardpoint’s No. 99 GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R will not be participating in this weekend’s WeatherTech Championship race despite previous plans to do so. The team’s transporter caught fire during its return from the race at Watkins Glen, causing water and smoke damage to the property inside. If replacement parts can be found, Hardpoint will rebuild the car and participate in its home race at Virginia International Raceway and the season finale at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Hardpoint Quote Board

Nick Galante, Driver, No.22 Porsche Cayman: “Road America is really everything you want a racetrack to be. It’s fast, it’s long, it’s got hard braking zones, there are opportunities to pass, the fans will be rowdy and ready to party. Our key is going to be staying focused and minimizing mistakes. If everyone can do that, we’ll be in good shape. I’m excited to have my old friend JCD join Sean and I. We’re due for a good result, not just for us but for all of the fans and loved ones that ride with us on the Racing to End Alzheimer’s Porsche. We’d like to carry them over to the podium at the end of the race on Saturday.”

Sean McAlister, Driver, No. 22 Porsche Cayman: “I love racing at Road America. It’s a track I’ve been to almost every year since I’ve been racing. Having an extra teammate will be great to get a new perspective on things, but it will cut our time in practice down a bit so we’ll need to have a good plan to maximize as much track time as possible. This race is longer than the ones we have had this season, which I think will play to our advantage.”

John Capestro-Dubets, Driver, No. 22 Porsche Cayman: “Road America is not only one of my favorite tracks but the area in general is on my favorites list. This place is special and the racing culture is deeply rooted in the little town of Elkhart. Racing here just makes you think about all the great drivers that shared this track for so many years. This place is high speed, high commitment and it breeds some of the best racing in North America. It’s a new team and new co-drivers, yes, but the same strategy for me this weekend. We need to check the basic boxes as drivers – hit our marks, make sure we do our job not only on track but as well as having buttoned up driver changes. Consistency is definitely the key to these races. So my focus is there over raw pace this weekend but I’m always looking to bring my best drive yet. I’ve been a friend to Nick for quite some years and to finally share a car with him and Sean in this setting is definitely something I’m really looking forward to.”

Derek DeBoer, Driver, No. 9 Porsche Cayman: “I’m really looking forward to getting my feet back into the IMSA paddock. It’s been awhile but I’ve had some great experiences there. I’m also excited to be reunited with Sean Gibbons, a great teammate from the past and current competitor, as well as Sam Owen. It couldn’t be a more perfect recipe, joining them in a familiar car and at one of my very favorite tracks. My first professional win came at Road America so it will always have a special spot in my heart! BRM Chronographs played a large part in this coming together for me so I’m very grateful for that while Brooke and I also look forward to sharing her children’s book, Fastlife – Lets Go Racing, with a new audience. We feel that during this time in our country, the message of chasing your dreams is particularly important. The youth are our future and we strive to support their dreams!”

Sam Owen, Driver, No. 9 Porsche Cayman: “I couldn’t be more excited to make my IMSA debut with my teammate Sean Gibbons and friend Derek DeBoer at one of my favorite tracks. Our goal is the Bronze Cup this weekend and seeing how we stack up with this field, but we know that the challenges are going to be big. Working with Rob and his Hardpoint team has been exceptional and we feel confident headed into the weekend with them in our corner.”

Sean Gibbons, Driver, No. 9 Porsche Cayman: “I’m looking forward to making my IMSA debut this week especially with my friend, regular co-driver and business partner Sam Owen, and Derek DeBoer who was part of my first win in sports car racing. Rob Ferriol and the whole team at Hardpoint have been amazing to work with. We’re really looking forward to testing ourselves here at Road America.”
