NASCAR CUP SERIES RACE #21 – POCONO RACEWAY

Famously known as the ‘Tricky Triangle’, Pocono Raceway is the next stop for all three of NASCAR’s national touring series this upcoming weekend. The 2.5-mile Pennsylvania venue first became a host to the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) in August 1974 and since then, has held 88 races for the series, including doubleheaders in 2020 and 2021. The weekend’s tripleheader will be the single appearance at Pocono by the series this season.

Chevrolet is the winningest brand at Pocono, recording a manufacturer-leading 33 victories at the track. The most recent of those triumphs came in part one of the 2021 NCS doubleheader by Alex Bowman and the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team. The race looked to be Kyle Larson’s, but after blowing a tire in the final corner coming to the checkered flag, Bowman was able to pass his teammate to take the win, giving Hendrick Motorsports a series-leading 18th victory at the track.

TOP-TWO STREAK CONTINUES FOR ELLIOTT

Chase Elliott and the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team continues to prove they are contenders for the championship title. The 26-year-old Georgia native brought home a runner-up finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last weekend, marking his fourth consecutive top-two finish. Within that streak includes two of his series-leading three wins, which were captured at Nashville Superspeedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Elliott continues to lead the series in a variety of the season’s statistical categories including: average running position (10.2); total laps led (658); fastest laps run (313); and tying fellow Chevrolet driver Ross Chastain for the most top-10 finishes (14).

The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion not only remains in the top position of the driver points standings, but was able to increase his points lead to 67 points over Ross Chastain in the second-spot. Elliott has also accumulated a series-leading 20 playoff points thus far, a feat that plays a vital role in setting his team up for a strong run at the championship title.

CHEVROLET EXTENDS LEAD IN MANUFACTURER STANDINGS

Looking to defend its NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) Manufacturer Championship titles this season, Chevrolet closed out the New Hampshire race weekend by expanding its points lead in both series’ standings.

The bowtie brand sits atop the NASCAR Cup Series manufacturer points standings with a 65 point lead over second, with eight drivers from four different Chevrolet teams contributing to those points thus far. In 20 NCS races this season, Chevrolet has now amassed 11 wins, 49 top-fives, 91 top-10s, 18 stage wins.. all of which are series-leading numbers.

Coming off the 12th NASCAR Xfinity Series win of the season, Chevrolet extended its lead in the NXS manufacturer standings to 78 points. Within a stout Chevrolet lineup in the series, nine Camaro SS drivers coming from five different Chevrolet teams have added points to the battle as the bowtie brand looks to capture its 24th NXS Manufacturer Championship title.

ALLGAIER TAKES CHEVROLET BACK TO VICTORY LANE AT NEW HAMPSHIRE

In a race that saw nine cautions and 14 lead changes among 10 drivers, Justin Allgaier and the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet team prevailed, taking the checkered flag for the first time in his career at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The 36-year-old Illinois native has now made his way to victory lane three times in 2022.. all recorded in the span of the last eight races. The win also moved Allgaier up the NXS driver points standings to second, sitting just 16 points out of the top spot.

Chevrolet’s return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series victory lane at New Hampshire was celebrated by a stellar bowtie representation in the final running order. Chevrolet drivers took nine of the top-10 finishing positions, with those drivers coming from eight different Chevrolet teams:

JR Motorsports – Justin Allgaier (Race Winner)

Brandonbilt Motorsports – Brandon Brown (third; season-best finish)

Jeremy Clements Racing – Jeremy Clements (fourth; season-best finish)

Richard Childress Racing – Sheldon Creed (fifth) and Austin Hill (seventh)

Big Machine Racing – Ty Dillon (sixth)

Jesse Iwuji Motorsports – Kyle Weatherman (eighth; team-best finish)

DGM Racing – Mason Massey (ninth; second career top-10 finish)

JD Motorsports – Bayley Currey (10th; second career top-10 finish)

NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader AJ Allmendinger powered his No. 16 Kaulig Racing Camaro SS to top-five finishes in both stages, but was caught up in an accident in the closing laps, forcing the team to pit for repairs. Salvaging a 20th-place finish, the Chevrolet driver was able to maintain the top position in the NXS driver points standings heading into the Pocono race weekend.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series Explore The Pocono Mountains 225 on Saturday will mark just the seventh appearance for the series at Pocono Raceway. In the NXS debut at the “Tricky Triangle” in 2016, Kyle Larson powered Chevrolet to the victory behind the wheel of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.

CLOSING OUT THE NCWTS REGULAR SEASON

Drivers and teams of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) head to Pocono Raceway with playoff implications on the mind. Saturday’s CRC Brakleen 150 marks the end of the regular season for the series, giving Chevrolet drivers one last shot to secure a playoff berth and become one of the 10 drivers that will compete for the NCWTS Driver Championship title.

Following a third-place finish in the series’ last race at Mid-Ohio, Niece Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar is the most recent driver to have locked himself into the playoff field. With just two spots left up for grabs, Chevrolet drivers have the chance to either point or win their way into the remaining coveted playoff spots. Heading into the ‘Tricky Triangle’ race weekend, GMS Racing’s Grant Enfinger and the No. 23 Silverado team sit ninth in the standings. While on the outside looking in, Derek Kraus and the No. 19 McAnally-Hilgemann Chevrolet team is just 19 points below the cutline.. with an open playoff spot still in reach.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series made its debut at Pocono Raceway in 2010, where Elliott Sadler drove his Chevrolet-powered machine for team owner Kevin Harvick to victory lane. In the series’ 12 races at the track, the bowtie brand has recorded five wins, with the most recent coming from Ross Chastain and Niece Motorsports in July 2019.

AND THE ESPY GOES TO…

After a storybook season in 2021, Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson was presented with the Best Driver Award at the 2022 ESPYS. Larson was among the great company of Max Verstappen, Steve Torrence and Alex Palou that were nominated for the prestigious award. This marks the 19th time that a NASCAR driver has been presented with the award. It’s also the ninth time that a Hendrick Motorsports driver has taken home the title, with Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson each winning it four times.

In Larson’s debut season with Hendrick Motorsports in 2021, the 29-year-old California native scored 10 points-paying race wins and his first NASCAR Cup Series Championship title. The title also marked Chevrolet’s 33rd Driver Championship title in NASCAR’s premier series.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 WORLDWIDE EXPRESS CAMARO ZL1

WHAT WILL SHIFTING LOOK LIKE THIS WEEKEND AT POCONO?

“In the past we’ve only shifted in Turn 1 and maybe some guys were shifting in Turn 3, and now we will shift in all three corners. We’re shifting a lot of the weeks this year, so even more shifting at Pocono.”

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RACING THE CAR VERSUS RACING THE TRUCK?

“The distance is one of the biggest things. A truck race is about half of the distance.

They used to be pretty similar to drive, but now with the current car they’re completely different. In the car we have a five speed sequential shifter, and in the trucks and the previous versions of the car, we had an H pattern. I really enjoy driving the cars now because they’re so challenging. In the moment when I’m in the car, I don’t think that, but when I get out I think about how cool it was to drive.”

IF YOU COULD PICK A DRIVER, PAST OR PRESENT, WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO RACE AGAINST AND WHY?

“I would probably pick Mario Andretti because he traversed all walks of racing. I would like to know more about that. I would ask him who helped him – a team of people, or did you just plug yourself in whichever series it was. He was naturally gifted, but he still had to work at it.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1

LARSON ON HIS EXPECTATIONS THIS WEEKEND:

“I always enjoy going to Pocono (Raceway) – it’s a track that for some reason suits my driving style. I’ve had some good runs there and was close to winning there last year, so I’m excited to go back. It should be interesting in the Next Gen car. I don’t know how many times we’ll be downshifting. In the previous car, this was really the only oval we’d downshift at, so it may not be too different.”

CLIFF DANIELS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1

DANIELS ON NEAR-WINS AT POCONO RACEWAY IN 2021:

“We were a corner away from what was going to be five in a row if you count the (non-points) All-Star win. The team worked hard to prepare the backup car for Sunday’s race, but we didn’t know how quick it really was because we bashed the nose in early in the race (after contact with another car), which put us behind on strategy. We had to play whatever cards we had, and that was to be a car that made it to the end and we ended up with a second-place finish. I’m pretty sure it was after that day I told the team that during the 2018 and 2019 NFL season, the Patriots beat the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game 37–31 – it was a totally offensive game. The Patriots then won the Super Bowl that year 13 to 3 – a totally defensive game. The No. 5 team had been on offense with three second places in a row followed by four wins – almost five. It looked like all offense. But that Sunday, all we could do was play defense and we did and finished second. That’s when I figured we were good on both sides of the coin.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1

ELLIOTT ON RACING AT POCONO:

“I mentioned before about how New Hampshire (Motor Speedway) and Pocono (Raceway) were two places where I felt like we really needed to improve and try to have good runs at. I feel like we accomplished that last week at New Hampshire. The team gave me a great car, but I just wasn’t able to get the job done. Still a far improvement from where I feel like we’ve been prior to that. Now we need to go and do the same thing this weekend at Pocono.”

ELLIOTT ON NAPA’S CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS:

“None of this is possible without NAPA. I’m so thankful for their commitment to our team and their passion for what we do every weekend. I’ve been lucky to meet a lot of great folks from across the country who work for NAPA. All of us are really proud to represent a company that takes care of its employees and its customers and is driven to be successful in every aspect. I’m looking forward to what’s to come and celebrating more wins together.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 RAPTORTOUGH.COM CAMARO ZL1

BYRON ON WHAT HE EXPECTS THIS WEEKEND AT POCONO:

“I’m excited to get to Pocono (Raceway) this weekend. It’s a track that both myself and Rudy (Fugle, crew chief) have had success at in every level of our careers. We were close to getting the win there twice last year and we won there together in Trucks. I think there’s a little bit more of an unknown for Sunday’s race this time though. Even though Pocono has three different corners, they are all primarily flat and flat tracks have been an area we have struggled at this year with the Next Gen car. I think last weekend at New Hampshire (Motor Speedway) we showed some improvement on those style of tracks, but ride quality was still off throughout a run. It has been hard to get the balance right for all three corners (at Pocono), and I feel like that may be an issue still this weekend. I still think my biggest focus, though, will be my drive off of turn three because it really carries you down the straightaway and sets you up with good momentum through turn one and on to turn two.”

RUDY FUGLE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 24 RAPTORTOUGH.COM CAMARO ZL1

FUGLE ON THE CHALLENGES THEY WILL FACE RACING AT POCONO:

“Pocono (Raceway) is tough no matter what series you’re racing in. It has three different, distinct corners that are all flat, which has been really hard to navigate with the new car. The flatter the corners, the harder it is for the car to handle well with grip levels and bump contact. The whole track can be rough, but especially turn two. You’re going to see a lot of cars bouncing around and it’s going to be treacherous. We’re really working on getting those things ironed out better for our flat track program. Pocono, though, is a track that both myself and William (Byron) enjoy going to. If we get those things ironed out, I think we will definitely be competing for a win on Sunday, just like we were in last year’s race there.”

ERIK JONES, NO. 43 FOCUSFACTOR CAMARO ZL1

“I’m looking forward to Pocono. It’s been a pretty good place for me in the past, really all the way up through ARCA, Truck, Xfinity and on to the Cup Series the last few years. Just enjoy it. It’s fun to go to. It’s a challenging place to get your car to drive well and challenging place as a driver as well with the size of the track and where you can make mistakes and where you can gain and loose speed. That’s kind of the fun part of Pocono for me. I’m excited to go there with our 43 group. I think the style of tracks we’ve really succeeded on this year are somewhat similar to what Pocono’s going to take out of your race car. I’m excited about that and hoping to go there with a chance to run up front and hopefully have a chance to win as well. Should be a good day.”

RICKY STENHOUSE JR., NO. 47 KROGER / SWEETLEAF STEVIA CAMARO ZL1

“Pocono is going to be interesting for us because we’ve found throughout the season that the ride quality is rougher and Turn 2 at Pocono is pretty rough in general. The sequential shifting will make it easier to drive, but we will have to what and see about the ride quality.

I’ll get more laps in this weekend running the NASCAR Xfinity Series race. It’s been a while and those cars look like a ton of fun to drive. An opportunity was presented for me to run a few races this year and I jumped on that. I’ll go have some fun on Saturday and be able to make more laps to see if I can learn anything for Sunday.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

BOWMAN ON GOING BACK TO POCONO AFTER WINNING LAST YEAR:

“Anytime you go back to a track that you have previously won at, you have a little more confidence and Pocono (Raceway) is one of those tracks for me. We had a great No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE last year and I know our team is doing everything they can to recreate that for me in this year’s car. I can’t say enough about my team and how hard they work, especially when we feel like we are not getting the results we are aiming for. Our team is so tight-knit and we all join together when we are facing a tough stretch. I feel like Pocono is going to be a place that we can go execute a solid race and get back on track with where we want to be.”

GREG IVES, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLYCAMARO ZL1

IVES ON HIS MINDSET AFTER THE LAST FOUR RACES:

“Our team is really good at rallying together and continuing to fight when we are not where we want to be. We had good speed at Atlanta (Motor Speedway) and at Road America, just some unfortunate circumstances at each race that took us out of contention. Everyone at the shop and on the road is putting in the time this week to go back and try to repeat our success at Pocono (Raceway) from last year. Alex (Bowman) is working hard and keeping his focus high, our pit crew is focused on executing at a high level, and our team at the shop is going the extra mile to ensure our No. 48 Ally Chevy is where it needs to be for Sunday.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 COMMSCOPE CAMARO ZL1

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON POCONO?

“It was cool to get the pole there in 2018 and then we finished second in the race that weekend. At Pocono, it always helps to have a good starting spot. Pocono is a track where you can’t make mistakes on the track, and you can’t have mistakes on pit road. Everyone has to do their part to execute perfectly. “

WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS MOST IMPORTANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT POCONO?

“Track position is extremely important every weekend, but it’s especially important at Pocono. If you make a mistake, it takes so much longer and is so much harder to recover from. It’s a tough place for sure.”

ARE YOU MORE CONFIDENT NOW AFTER EARNING THAT FIRST CAREER VICTORY?

“I don’t think I am more confident, that’s really never wavered. I am relieved we got that victory and how it put us in the playoffs. We just have to keep improving.”

GRANT ENFINGER, NO. 23 CHAMPION POWER EQUIPMENT SILVERADO RST

“I’m pretty excited to debut a new chassis with our Champion Power Equipment team this week at Pocono. Everyone on this No. 23 team and at GMS Fabrication have been putting in the extra work in preparation for these final eight races of the year, and I think we will have a piece ready to contend with. We have our goals set in place and know what we need to do to lock ourselves into the playoffs picture, so now it’s all up to us to execute. I’m confident in the direction this team is going.”

JACK WOOD, NO. 24 CHEVROLET MILITARY APPRECIATION SILVERADO RST

“Last year when we raced at Pocono, we had a very unfortunate incident that ended our race pretty early, so I’m looking forward to returning to the track and showing what we’re made of. The Poconos are a beautiful part of the country, and I think a unique track like this will give us an opportunity to finally turn our season around. The GMS team put together some good runs there with our teammates last year, so I know that we have a good chance at replicating that type of success. Also, I am very excited to debut this special Chevrolet Military Appreciation paint scheme this week. My family has some deep ties to the military, and I love what the people at GM are doing with this program in offering a discount to those that have served. It’s going to be a fun weekend for us in more ways than one!”

2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion tops Max Verstappen, Steve Torrence and Alex Palou for prestigious honor

Daytona Beach, FL (July 21, 2022) – Defending NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson took home some more hardware Wednesday night, winning the 2022 ESPY Award for Best Driver. Larson topped Formula 1’s Max Verstappen, IndyCar’s Alex Palou and NHRA’s Steve Torrence for the honor.

The 2022 ESPYS aired live Wednesday on ABC from the Dolby Theater in Los Angles and was hosted by NBA Champion and Finals MVP Stephen Curry. It marked the 29th edition of the awards show celebrating the best moments and figures in sports.

Larson finished the 2021 season with 10 wins (not including his triumph in the NASCAR All-Star Race), 20 top-five finishes and 26 top-10 showings, all the most among NASCAR Cup Series drivers. He is one of only 11 drivers to notch 10 or more victories in a season. He showed tremendous versatility, winning at road courses, intermediate ovals, and short tracks, highlighted by the Bristol Night Race, Coca-Cola 600 and NASCAR Championship Race at Phoenix.

Known for racing anytime and anywhere, Larson also won 22 dirt races in Late Models, Sprint Cars and Midgets. Most notably, he won the Chili Bowl, Knoxville Nationals, Kings Royal and the Prairie Dirt Classic.

In typical Larson fashion, he celebrated his ESPY by winning the World of Outlaws Sprint Car race at Port Royal Speedway (Pa.) Wednesday night.

NASCAR drivers who have earned the Best Driver ESPY in the past include Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson.

Larson takes the seat of his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet next in Sunday’s M&M’s Fan Appreciation 400 at Pocono Raceway (3 p.m. ET on USA Network, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

  • Chassis History/Info: Grant Enfinger and the No. 23 team will debut a brand new chassis at Pocono Raceway. Say hello to GMS Racing intermediate chassis no. 323, as this Silverado RST enters its first race this weekend during the CRC Brakleen 150. Pocono marks the second time in 2022 that the veteran will compete with a brand new chassis built by the team at GMS Fabrication.
  • Powerful Pocono Player: Out of all 38 drivers entered in the NCWTS race at Pocono Raceway, Grant Enfinger is one of only six drivers who have previously won at the facility during their careers. Enfinger won an ARCA Menards Series race at “The Tricky Triangle” back in 2016, leading 17 laps.
  • Playoffs Outlook: Enfinger and the Champion Power Equipment crew are eyeing a potential run at the championship as they enter the final race of the regular season with a 47-point buffer to the final spot in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs grid. Entering Saturday’s event at Pocono, Grant is positioned in ninth place in the drivers’ points standings, and looks to power his way into the postseason at the unique 2.5-mile tri-oval track configuration. – GE Quote: “I’m pretty excited to debut a new chassis with our Champion Power Equipment team this week at Pocono.

  • Chassis History/Info: Jack Wood will compete with GMS Racing chassis no. 330 at Pocono Raceway. The rookie has raced this Chevrolet Silverado RST three previous times this season, highlighted by a 13th place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway, which happens to be Wood’s best finish of the season up to this point. Zane Smith drove this chassis to victory lane at Dover Motor Speedway in 2020, and also raced it at Pocono in the same year.
  • Game On: Recently, Jack Wood partnered up with one of the most influential names in eSports and gaming electronics, Logitech G. Since joining the Logitech G family of athletes, Wood has began actively promoting their products in the sim racing space, notably including the Logitech G923 TRUEFORCE Racing Wheel. In the near future, some exclusive content surrounding Wood’s involvement with the organization will be showcased across his social media platforms.
  • Sunoco ROTY Update: The past two weeks have been tough on Jack Wood in the chase for the Sunoco Rookie Of The Year honors, with misfortunate accidents taking the driver of the No. 24 out of the running at Nashville and Mid-Ohio. Currently, Wood is positioned fourth in the rookie standings, 30 points out of the lead. A good showing in Pocono will certainly help get the team back on track to contend for the rest of the season!
  • JW Quote: “Last year when we raced at Pocono, we had a very unfortunate incident that ended our race pretty early, so I’m looking forward to returning to the track and showing what we’re made of.

Chevrolet takes aim at second leg of Western Swing

CHEVROLET AT SONOMA

What: Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals
When: Friday, July 22-Sunday, July 24
Where: Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California
TV: FOX will telecast eliminations at 4 p.m. ET Sunday, July 24

Team Chevy takes aim at second leg of Western Swing
Robert Hight seeking to become first to win four in a row at Sonoma Raceway

DETROIT (July 21, 2022) – No driver has won four consecutive National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) events at Sonoma Raceway. That’s all the motivation Funny Car points leader Robert Hight needs as he heads into the race weekend at the scenic and fast California racetrack.

Hight, winner last week at Denver in the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS, has won the past three races (2021, ’19 and ’18; no race in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic) at the facility 44 miles north of San Francisco. He’ll seek to keep that streak intact, which would give him victories in two legs of the three-race Western Swing and increase his Funny Car points lead.

Hight has been on a roll with five wins and a pair of runner-up finishes through 11 races this season.

“We’ve just got to go to Sonoma and treat it like we did in Denver and make three really good qualifying runs and race smart,” said Hight, said Hight, who pushed his career victory total to 58 and delivered the 152nd Funny Car win for Chevrolet.

“If we keep doing that, the round wins are going to come, but this class is tough. I think it’s a successful season when you have five wins total with the level of competition here. We’re at the halfway point, but it’s the next 11 races that count. We have to keep working and keep digging.

“We’ve got a great combination and we’re fine-tuning it, and I think we’re only getting better and more consistent. I don’t feel like we’ve peaked yet, but I also know the competition is getting tougher.”

“We’ve got a great combination and we’re fine-tuning it, and I think we’re only getting better and more consistent. I don’t feel like we’ve peaked yet, but I also know the competition is getting tougher and we’ve got our work cut out for us. Everything is working from top to bottom and we’re just going to try to stay focused and keep working.”

Only 16-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force (1994) ha swept the Western Swing in Funny Car, and five-time champion Greg Anderson (2004) accomplished the feat in Pro Stock. In 2019, Anderson nearly duplicated the feat, winning the first leg at Denver and the second at Sonoma before finishing runner-up to Matt Hartford at Seattle.

Hartford, driving the Total Seal Camaro SS, won at Bandimere Speedway last weekend, beating No. 1 qualifier Aaron Stanfield in the final for his first win since May 2021 at Houston and his fifth overall.

“This Total Seal Camaro is coming around and I’m starting to drive better,” Hartford said. “This deal isn’t over yet. We’re coming.”

Stanfield, driving the Janac Brothers Camaro SS, has advanced to the final round in six of the nine races. He won at Sonoma in 2021, defeating rookie Dallas Glenn in the final. Stanfield is second in the Pro Stock standings to Elite Motorsports teammate Erica Enders.

Anderson, who has six wins and was the No. 1 qualifier in 2021 at Sonoma Raceway, is aiming to add his 100th Pro Stock victory to his stellar career in the HendrickCars.com Camaro SS. Only Force (155) has triple-digit wins in pro categories.

Force, winner earlier this season at zMAX Dragway in the PEAK/BlueDEF Platinum Camaro SS and a semifinalist at Denver, has eight wins at Sonoma Raceway.

Brittany Force, who is 10 points out of the top spot in the Top Fuel category in the Flav-R-Pac/Monster Energy Chevrolet dragster, earned her fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season at Denver and will be looking for her first victory at Sonoma. She was the No. 1 qualifier at the track in 2021 and holds the Top Fuel speed record of 335.15 mph set in 2019.

CHEVROLET FROM THE COCKPIT

TOP FUEL

BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, FLAV-R-PAC/MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (three-time winner this season; second in points): “We still kept ourselves up in the points and brought home our fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season. Lucky for us we head straight to Sonoma for number two on this Western Swing.”

AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRAND/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (runner-up at Pomona opener; semifinalist in two of past five races): “I have a good feeling about Sonoma. I’m glad my dad and Hight were able to make the day worth it, especially with NK Seeds and Frank Tiegs in attendance. We will celebrate their win for the John Force Racing team and get it done this weekend.”

FUNNY CAR

JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 1 qualifier and Charlotte four-wide winner; eight-time winner at the racetrack): “As a team owner, as part of a team, anytime you come out of the day with someone in your camp winning, it’s a good day. Robert and that Auto Club team they’re on a roll, they’re the team to beat. But this PEAK team, we’re getting there, we’re right there. We’ve been consistent. Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisi, all these PEAK guys, they are working hard to get the job done and I just need to keep doing my job too.”

ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (five-time winner this season; points leader; holds both ends of track Funny Car record set in 2017): “We’ve just got to go to Sonoma and treat it like we did in Denver and make three really good qualifying runs and race smart. If we keep doing that, the round wins are going to come, but this class is tough. I think it’s a successful season when you have five wins total with the level of competition here. We’re at the halfway point, but it’s the next 11 races that count. We have to keep working and keep digging. I’d like to get to 60 (career wins) this year. Everything from top to bottom is working right now. We have to stay focused and keep working, and we can only get better.”

PRO STOCK

MASON MCGAHA, HARLOW SAMMONS RACING, HARLOW SAMMONS OF ODESSA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (semifinalist in four of the nine races): “I would really like to get that first win. I felt like we had a pretty good race in Denver. My dad had his best qualifying effort and on race day I felt pretty strong. In that first round I hit all my shift points perfectly and was .003. I needed all of it right there for that win. I have always liked Sonoma and it would be pretty cool to get my first win at a track where my dad has won. It is a nice facility and you can run pretty fast there when conditions are right. I feel like at some point things have to go my way on race day. The odds just need to swing in my favor and we will keep going up there giving it our best.”

CHRIS MCGAHA, HARLOW SAMMONS RACING, HARLOW SAMMONS OF ODESSA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (2015 winner at the track): “I have won eight races, but I haven’t won somewhere twice. I feel like I am due to win somewhere twice. The last few years on the fuel injection have been tough. I won Sonoma in 2015 and had the track record. I haven’t done as well at Sonoma the past few years as I thought I could. Having two cars now helps. I was looking at my notes for Sonoma and I think in previous years I just took for granted how good the track really is. I think it could be a better track than I have given it credit. I might not have been as aggressive as I needed to be. I am looking forward to getting back there and seeing if I can get that second win.”

GREG ANDERSON, KB RACING, HENDRICKCARS.COM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (reigning Pro Stock champion; seeking to become second pro driver with 100 wins; six-time winner at Sonoma; No. 1 qualifier in 2021): “If they ever drop one or two races off the Western Swing, I hope they never drop Sonoma. It’s probably one of my favorite races. I’ve had a lot of luck there. It’s always decent weather, the cars run good there, so it’s everything that makes you smile if you race Pro Stock.”

CAMRIE CARUSO, CARUSO FAMILY RACING, TEQUILA COMISARIO CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (first season in Pro Stock; No. 1 qualifier and runner-up at Houston): “The Mile High Nationals was a race that tested our team, but I think we will be stronger because we did struggle. We are a young team and we are working to get better every race. We have had a lot of success so far this season, but I know we can be better. I am getting better as a driver and the team is getting better. There is so much to learn and process it is a challenge but one that I am up for.”

KYLE KORETSKY, KB RACING, LUCAS OIL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 1 qualifier at Phoenix; runner-up at Gainesville; third in standings; No. 2 qualifier at track in 2021): “Sonoma has a cool atmosphere and we had a fast car last year. Going into Sonoma we’ll change cars back from the high altitude of Denver and we’ll try to keep the momentum going. We’ll focus on going one round at a time and try to gain some points.”

DALLAS GLENN, KB RACING, RAD TORQUE SYSTEMS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (winner at Gainesville; No. 1 qualifier at Epping; runner-up in 2021 race at track): “Just didn’t go our way (at Denver). Excited to head to Sonoma and to some regular elevation racing. I seem to do better in those conditions anyways.”

DETROIT (June 21, 2022) – After a year away, Chevrolet’s teams in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES head back to the Midwest for a twin-bill at a most unique venue on the 2022 schedule: the 0.875-mile Iowa Speedway.

INDYCAR squads will race at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday in the Hy-VeeDeals.com 250, followed the next day at 3 p.m. ET by the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300. Each event will air live on NBC, Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Chevrolet returns to Iowa carrying the lead in the INDYCAR Engine Manufacturer Championship – as it has done since the first race at St. Petersburg in February. Through 10 races, Chevrolet teams have claimed seven race wins by four different drivers and six pole positions by six different drivers from three different teams.

Now Team Chevy has its sights set on Iowa, a venue where the manufacturer has achieved incredible success. It’s the perfect place for a rebound from a disappointing race at Toronto

“We’re all looking forward to returning to Iowa Speedway for this year’s doubleheader,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet Program Manager for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. “It’s a classic American short track where things happen very quickly. After a weekend like Toronto, there’s nothing like getting back to racing right away at a place where we have traditionally been strong. We need to keep piling up points and results.”

There haven’t been many places where Chevrolet has done that more than Iowa. The Bowtie brand has seven wins and nine pole positions in 10 races… plus it has set the fastest race laps in all 10 previous appearances since 2012.

Team Chevy swept the podium in 2013, 2014 and 2016 and has 20 podiums out of a possible 30.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, driver of the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet, is a three-time winner at Iowa – tied for the most all-time at the circuit. He is one of five drivers to take victory at Iowa with Chevrolet power.

Ed Carpenter returns to the cockpit of the No. 33 Alzamend Neuro Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet.

Team Chevy on Display

While on-site at Iowa, Team Chevy fans can enjoy all that the Chevrolet Motorsports display, located in the Fan Midway. The Chevrolet Motorsports Display opens at 2 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. Sunday. Numerous Chevrolet vehicles and other highlights include:

• 2023 Corvette Z06

• Additional Chevrolet products such as Silverado ZR2, Tahoe Z71, Blazer RS, Equinox RS, Trailblazer Activ and Camaro ZL1

• A Chevrolet IndyCar showcar

• An opportunity to receive a 2022 Chevrolet Racing t-shirt

Chevrolet also will serve as the official pace car with a Corvette Stingray Coupe leading the field to green.

Chevrolet and the NTT INDYCAR Series return to Iowa Speedway with two races: the Hy-VeeDeals.com 250 at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday and the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday. Each event will air live on NBC, Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network. Live timing and scoring will be available at racecontrol.indycar.com.

Amber Balcaen; Rette Jones Racing Refocused Heading to Pocono Raceway

LONG POND, Pa.: It’s no secret that the last three ARCA Menards Series races have been tough to swallow for Rette Jones Racing and ARCA Menards Series rookie driver Amber Balcaen, but after a much-welcomed break, the team treks to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway determined to earn their fourth top-10 finish of the season in Friday’s General Tire Delivers 200.

In the most recent ARCA Menards Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course earlier this month, Balcaen made her road course debut aboard the No. 30 ICON Direct Ford Fusion where she overcame a series of obstacles including racing in the rain to net a respectable top-15 finish in the Dawn 150k.

With a consecutive three-race stretch race of ovals on deck, Balcaen is focused on utilizing the recent stretch of races as determination to earn her first top-10 since Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

“The off-week was a good time for our Rette Jones Racing team to hit the reboot button,” said Balcaen.

“We have had fast No. 30 ICON Direct Ford Fusions over the past month and a half but circumstances and mistakes from me behind the wheel have prevented us from producing even more top-10 finishes.

“I didn’t think by any means that we would not endure some tough luck but I think we have paid our dues since Iowa Speedway and it’s time to shift the tide and put some positive momentum back in our team at Pocono Raceway on Friday.”

Outside of Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, Pocono Raceway will be the biggest track she has competed on in her young ARCA Menards Series career. And while Daytona and Talladega offer a different racing styles for the Rette Jones Racing team, she is looking forward to utilizing Pocono to get her comfortable for Michigan International Speedway next month.

“Pocono is massive,” she said. “I’ve been doing my homework for a while now. I know it does not race anything like Daytona or Talladega, but it is a fast track where speed, comfort and handling are critical. I know it’s going to take some time for me to get comfortable, but as long as we are making steady progress forward and we let our laps on the track at the end of the race on Friday afternoon be our fastest and we come away with a top-10 finish, I think everyone will be satisfied.”

To help Balcaen and her Mark Rette-led team prepare for the 2.5-mile triangle, she will participate in an open test session at the Long Pond, Pennsylvania track where several hours of on-track activity will help strengthen her learning curve but also give her a baseline for practice and qualifying on Thursday.

“Honestly, outside of Daytona, Pocono will be the first track this year where I’ll have actual laps before practice and qualifying and that is going to be super important,” added Balcaen. “Learning the proper racing line and my shifting points at Pocono are going to be critical to helping make my debut a success and I’m glad we’ll have some time on Thursday to make that happen.

“If we can make adjustments to our car and keep improving our lap times throughout the day, we hope to take all those positives and apply them to Friday when it counts most.”

For crew chief and co-team owner Mark Rette, he is confident that his rookie driver will continue to adapt and rebound at Pocono.

“I know Amber has been pretty hard on herself lately, but there isn’t a person on this team that has lost faith in her or her abilities behind the wheel,” offered Rette. “Everything that has happened over the last several races has been a learning experience and will help the program for the long term.

“We’ll take our battle wounds and press forward with a positive attitude and focus on making the most out of our Pocono Raceway weekend. It is not the easiest track in the world, but I think she can adjust to the challenges and find herself in a place to deliver a good finish on Friday night.”

ICON Direct will continue to adorn the primary positions on Balcaen’s race car in their 10th of 20 races this season.

ICON Direct is a manufacturer of high-quality plastic component parts for the RV industry, located in Manitoba, Canada. ICON aftermarket replacement parts are available through RV Dealers and Distributors across North America and directly through their website IconDirect.com.

The Winnipeger’s new endeavor at Rette Jones Racing will also be supported by Glenn McLeod and Sons – cementing a full Canadian roster of partners for her ARCA Menards Series rookie season.

Longtime RJR partners Ford Performance, Goodridge Fluid Transfer Systems, Jones Group Demolition and Abatement and JRi Shocks will continue their relationship with the team in 2022 and serve as associate partners on Balcaen’s No. 30 ICON Direct Ford Fusion.

RJR is co-owned by Canadian entrepreneur and former race car driver Terry Jones.

Entering Pocono, Balcaen sits sixth in the ARCA Menards Series championship standings, 13 points out of fourth and 71 markers in the arrears to championship leader Rajah Caruth.
