Mitsubishi Motors Launches the All-New Outlander PHEV Model and Starts Sales in Japan in December

Flagship SUV Combines Leading Electrification and All-Wheel Control Technologies

TOKYO, Oct 28, 2021 – (JCN Newswire) – Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today premiered online its fully redesigned plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model of the Outlander crossover SUV. Sales will commence in Japan on December 16, followed by Australia and New Zealand in the first half of 2022 and North America in the second half of 2022.

The all-new Outlander PHEV model is MMC’s flagship model which brings together its expertise in electrification and all-wheel control technologies, while also incorporating a newly-developed platform and an array of advanced technologies. Based on the product concept of “I-Fu-Do-Do” or authentic and majestic in Japanese, it adds a new dimension to the powerful ride, roomy interior spaces and wide-ranging functionalities expected of an SUV, along with the smooth yet powerful acceleration, and the safe, secure and comfortable ride unique to an electric vehicle (EV) in any driving conditions.

“With low CO2 emissions and environmental impact in terms of life-cycle assessment, the all-new Outlander PHEV model can be considered the best solution for carbon neutrality today,” said Takao Kato, president and chief executive officer, MMC. “With our electrification technology that delivers an exhilarating, eco-friendly ride, plus all-wheel control technology for safety and peace of mind in any kind of weather and road conditions, we are confident this new Outlander can make driving even more enjoyable and fulfilling.”

The Outlander was initially released in 20011 as MMC’s first crossover SUV. Since then, it has been rolled out globally over three generations and has become a core model in the company’s lineup, comprising approximately 20 percent of the sales volume. After the PHEV model was added to the previous generation in Japan in 2013, it was sequentially launched in regions including Europe, Oceania, North America and ASEAN, and has become a leader in the PHEV category with around 290,000 total units2 sold thus far.

Product overview

The all-new Outlander PHEV model has been given significant upgrades all over, focusing on the following three attributes.

  • New-generation PHEV system that delivers more powerful road performance and greater driving range
  • Safe, secure and comfortable driving in various weather and road conditions
  • Exterior with powerful presence and advanced, high-class interior

New-generation PHEV system that delivers more powerful road performance and greater driving range

To further enhance its appeal as an EV, MMC has completely updated the Outlander’s PHEV components, extended its EV driving range and enhanced the exhilarating acceleration unique to EVs. With an increase of around 40 percent in the output of the front and rear motors and drive battery, the new model can keep driving in EV mode and avoid starting the engine as much as possible even when pressing hard on the accelerator, delivering the smooth, powerful and satisfying motor-based driving of high-output twin-motor 4WD. Switching to a large capacity drive battery with total capacity of 20 kilowatts (kWh) and raising the equivalent all-electric range to 87 kilometers (km, in WLTC mode)4, 5 has assured sufficient driving range even when using functions such as the air conditioner, while at the same time helping to reduce the frequency of charging. An increase in the capacity of the gas tank has also expanded the total possible range when combining EV driving with hybrid driving.

The power drive unit for the front motor is newly equipped with a booster function which bolsters driving force by raising the supply of voltage to the front motor while simultaneously improving electricity consumption by raising the efficiency of the generator. Unifying the rear motor with the control unit also secured enough floor space to install a third row of seats, enabling a seven-passenger seating layout. Installing the control unit on the outside of the passenger compartment has also helped to shut out high-frequency noise for superior quietness.

Newly added innovative pedal operation mode makes it possible to both accelerate and decelerate just by controlling the accelerator pedal. The accelerator pedal alone can exert proper braking force with no need to switch to the brake pedal when decelerating6, so drivers can concentrate on steering and have more peace of mind in slippery surfaces such as snowy roads, as well as reducing the fatigue caused by switching pedals.

Safe, secure and comfortable driving in various weather and road conditions

The S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system, based on a twin-motor 4WD system with one drive motor in front and another in the rear, has a new brake AYC (Active Yaw Control) function for the rear wheels. This allows the system to distribute the driving force to the front and rear wheels optimally according to road and driving conditions, while torque vectoring by controlling the brakes on the left and right wheels is also possible for the front and rear wheels. This makes it possible to extract the maximum performance from all four tires in a more balanced manner, delivering handling true to the driver’s intention and high operating stability.

Seven drive modes can be selected depending on road surface conditions and driving style. Normal is the basic mode, optimized for normal driving on paved roads. Tarmac mode provides brisk acceleration response and high-cornering performance on dry paved surfaces. Gravel mode provides balanced operability and road handling ability on unpaved or wet paved roads, and Snow mode delivers stable vehicle behavior on snowy and other slippery roads. Mud mode optimizes tire slippage according to vehicle speed for superior road handling on muddy roads and deep trenches of snow, while also providing better ability to escape when stuck. Modes that can be used according to driving style are Power mode, which delivers powerful acceleration when needed, and Eco mode which prioritizes economic and environmentally friendly driving. These seven driving modes ensure a comfortable, enjoyable driving experience along with safety and peace of mind.

The newly developed platform and highly rigid structure of RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body design achieve a high level of safety and steering stability. In addition to greatly increasing the front body rigidity and torsional rigidity which contributed to improving steering stability, MMC has also used hot stamping method ultra-high tensile strength steel sheets (1,470 MPa). Incorporated around the passenger compartment, these sheets go beyond the conventional steel sheet reinforcement to form a highly durable passenger compartment with little deformation. Inclusion of the latest version of MMC’s active safety technologies, which detect collision risks with multiple sensors for safer driving, keep collision risks to a minimum while offering safety and peace of mind.

The all-new Outlander is equipped with evolved MI-PILOT7 single-lane driver assistance technology for highways. The control system integrates Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) to assist the driver in maintaining distance between vehicles while keeping in the center of the lane. It also detects speed limit signs and automatically adjusts the set speed accordingly. MI-PILOT with Navi-link utilizes map data to automatically adjust vehicle speed as needed according to curves, forks, and other circumstances on expressways. Also, the vehicle can automatically start within about 30 seconds of stopping in traffic, alleviating fatigue on the expressway.

Mitsubishi Connect is adopted for more safety, security and comfort behind the wheel. User can easily access emergency assistance, check the travelable distance of the drive battery, set charging times and alerts to avoid forgetting to charge, and display the positioning of a parked vehicle on smartphone app maps to see where it is located. Mitsubishi Connect also has a parental control function that sends notifications of vehicle driving status.

Exterior with powerful presence and advanced, high-class interior

Based on the bold expressions of functionality with which MMC has designed its SUVs over the years, the company developed the all-new Outlander under its new design concept — Bold Stride — which expresses a bold, fixating presence with a solid stance and dependability for drivers to take a new step forward.

On the front, MMC has evolved the Dynamic Shield for a new generation to create a front-end design with a sense of presence. Seen from the side, the large-diameter 20-inch wheels along with the muscular fender flares that house them combine with D-pillars inspired by the vertical tail of airplanes and a floating roof to conjure an image of powerful yet crisp road performance. The rear side of the all-new Outlander features tailgate design comprised of a hexagon motif, and the horizontally themed tail lights that extend to both edges create a styling that accentuates wideness and stability. Body color can be selected from a total of 10 colors including the vivid, crystalline, high brightness Diamond Color series – Red Diamond, White Diamond, and the new Black Diamond.

Inside, the horizontally sculpted instrument panel makes it easy to understand the position of the car while driving, and expresses robustness and a feeling of spaciousness. The center console is designed to project a broad high-class presence. Finely textured soft padding that is pleasing to the touch can be found all over the interior, with stitching added for a high-quality feel. Based on the Mitsubishi Touch approach, the monitors and gauges are designed to be reassuringly easy to see, while the selectors, dials and switches are designed to provide a confident grip and operation, resulting in a quality feel that appeals to the senses.

JEFF DYER SEEKS REDEMPTION THIS SATURDAY AT THE VENTURA RACEWAY

Jeff Dyer photo courtesy of Lance Jennings.

(Yucca Valley, CA, October 27, 2021) When the California Lightning Sprint Car Series returns to Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway for the final time in 2021 this Saturday night, veteran driver Jeff Dyer will be seeking redemption after a heartbreaking loss at the track four weeks ago.  The race will be the busy drivers 28th start in the 2021 campaign.

When the CLS last visited Ventura on October 2nd, Dyer, who lives in Yucca Valley, California, was fast all night long.  He placed second in both his heat race and the dash.  The runner-up spot in the dash put him on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap main event.  From there, he dominated the race.  That is, he dominated the race for the first 23-laps.  Having lapped all the way up to the fifth-place car, Dyer was less than 20-seconds away from victory on the ocean side oval.  However, his clutch failed.  That saw him go from sure victory to a sixth-place finish in the blink of an eye.

Dyer is ranked fourth in the season long CLS championship standings heading into this Saturday’s race.  His first three appearances at Ventura have seen him at, or near, the front of the pack.  His best finish thus far in 2021 came at the track when he placed second on June 5th.  On August 28th he finished 4th and as mentioned above, he led all but the last two laps there on October 2nd

Even though the CLS has not been in action for a month, Dyer has done anything, but sit around.  Two weeks ago he contested the prestigious “California Cup” for Lightning Sprint Cars at the Lemoore Raceway.  The highlight of the weekend came on night number two when he started seventh and finished third in the main event.  On the opening night, he started third in the main, but took himself out going for the lead, and ended up 14th.  In the 40-lap finale, he started ninth and waltzed his way up to sixth before getting tangled up in someone else’s mess.  He restarted at the back of the talent laden field and thrilled the crowd with a drive through the pack to seventh.  More was in the offering, but with 10-laps to go, his throttle stuck wide open.  That forced an early evacuation from the main event with a 16th place finish.

Last Saturday night Dyer journeyed to Perris Auto Speedway for his final 2021 appearance in the Amsoil USAC/CRA Series.  An annoying oil leak where the pan meets the block plagued the Dyer Motorsports/Cal Smith #39 all night long.  Dyer started the main event in 21st.  However, when the engine began to smoke again, he wisely pulled it off to prevent damage.

Fans who want to watch Dyer compete at the beautiful ocean side oval can find the track on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001).  The website is http://venturaraceway.com/ and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE.  Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m. and the first race of the night will take the green flag at 5:30.

Throughout the 2021 campaign, Dyer will be racing in memory of his grandfather, Glenn Sels.

With the end of the 2021 season less than a month away, Dyer is already preparing for the 2022 campaign.  If you or your company would like to jump on board with this hard racing, fun loving team, please contact him using the information at the top of this release.

Dyer Motorsports would like to thank the following for making the 2021 USAC/CRA and California Lightning Sprint Car Series racing seasons possible.  Glenn Sels Engineering, Cal Smith Racing, John Springstead Racing, Say No To Drugs, T Shirts By Timeless, Specialty Fasteners, Justice Brothers, LDS Investigations, Hair Cuts by Susie, Darrien Racing, Amsoil, Dependable Machines, Tucker Racing, JC Auto and Repair, Homeland Hearth, Schweitzer Racing and Crutchfield Race Engines.  If you would like to be a part of the team in 2021, call or send an Email to the contact information at the top of this page.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Launches the All-New GR86

Fans of the 86 can test-drive and compare the GR86 and Subaru BRZ at FUJI 86 STYLE with BRZ

Toyota City, Japan, Oct 28, 2021 – (JCN Newswire) – TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) commenced sales of the all-new GR86 at GR Garage and Toyota dealers nationwide, on October 28.

The GR86 was jointly developed with Subaru Corporation (Subaru). In September 2019, Toyota and Subaru entered into a new business and capital alliance, and have promoted their goal of making ever-better cars in new fields, such as by jointly developing the new Toyota bZ4X battery electric vehicle (BEV). But the two companies also share a desire to continue delivering the excitement, thrill, and joy of driving sports cars; to this end, they have also engaged in the joint development of sports cars that embody the unique qualities of both companies.

The GR86 shares the same base as the Subaru BRZ. However, Toyota focused on delivering the unique driving feel of a GR vehicle, with intuitive handling and instinctive responsiveness, linear response, and outstanding agility at the upper limits of performance. While carrying on the tradition of the 86 and engaging in friendly rivalry with Subaru’s BRZ development team, TGR sought to develop a vehicle that would realize a GR-like evolution. As a result, the new GR86 has been reborn as a car designed with outstanding driving feel that is both direct and satisfying.

The City of New Orleans: Things You Didn’t Know

New Orleans is an amazing and unique city. Everyone knows about Mardi Gras, but have you heard of the most haunted house in New Orleans or eaten alligator for breakfast? In this article, we have compiled some of the most unusual facts about “NOLA,” as called by the locals. Some are well-known and some new, but they are all fun new things to learn about the Big Easy!

New Orleans – or N’awlins – has a rich culture reflected in its food, music, and festivals. French colonists established the city as La Nouvelle-Orléans in 1718.  In 1862, following the Louisiana Purchase from France, New Orleans took on a new role as part of the United States. Since then, the city has established itself as one of the most prominent cities of the state of Louisiana – if not the entire country. Let us take a look at some of the most intriguing features of New Orleans.

The Motorcycle Culture

The sense of camaraderie and community that connects motorcycle riders across the world is almost unrivaled. In New Orleans, this scenario is especially vivid. There is an array of riding experiences that you can acquire from this city.

Go out on a sunny day in the streets of NOLA, and, chances are, you will witness a massive group of bikers riding in unison. You might also see groups of “old-school” bikers bursting through the empty streets on their chromed Harleys. Even their attires are unique, with stylish leather jackets and heavy boots being their most prominent features, aside from the intensely customized bikes.

The female riders are hardly different, except for their clothing which they hardly wear while biking. The New Orleans Motorcycle Culture is fascinating, especially for tourists who have never seen anything like it ever before. In fact, a visit to NOLA might be the perfect opportunity to ride a motorcycle on the highway for the first time. You don’t want to miss out on that.

The City’s Haunted Nature

New Orleans is home to the most haunted places in the United States. Of course, there’s no government-issued data on which cities are the most haunted in the United States. However, whether you are a skeptic of the spectral or have a passion for the phantom, it is easy to see why New Orleans – with its creepy cemeteries, voodoo practices, and ties to the occult – has earned its reputation as a refuge for souls yet to depart.

There are endless horror stories associated with the city. The slave tortures, the Royal Street estate murders committed by Delphine LaLaurie, the massacre at Gardette-LePretre Mansion, the child’s presence at Hotel Monteleone, the poltergeists of Muriel’s restaurant – you name it! The city has it all. The city plays host to countless tourists every year just for this very reason. Talk about the ultimate experience of a haunted city!

The World’s Longest Continuous Bridge

In the Guinness Book of World Records, the iconic Lake Pontchartrain Causeway holds the record for being the longest, over-water, continuous bridge in the world. The record has remained untouched ever since the bridge was built back in 1956. It is a remarkable landmark, something every tourist in the city must visit. The bridge is so astonishingly long, drivers have claimed that they lose sight of land when they reach the middle.

Imagine how scary it can be! There have also been reports of mothers giving birth on the bridge as they could not cross the bridge and make it in time to the hospital. We suggest every New Orleans tourist go check the Causeway out. Chances are, they will stay baffled for days!

The Birthplace of Poker and Craps

The globally recognized card games Poker and Craps originated from the city of New Orleans. Poker was initially a French game called Poque and was quite popular during the 17th century. With the arrival of French colonists, the game entered US soil (New Orleans, to be precise) and stayed. American settlers converted the name into English and began calling it Poker. Over time, many rules changed, but the theme remained the same. The story behind craps is also similar, with its initial name being Crapaud – French for frog.

Mardi Gras Is a Children’s Event

While Mardi Gras might seem like an all-out party from the outside, the event is for young children. The kids of New Orleans grow in a unique environment because of Mardi Gras, as nothing can compare with it in the entire country.

When the occasion hits, you will witness never-ending parades – throwing doubloons, beads, trinkets, and whatnot, to the children screaming their lungs out in the streets. At St. Charles Avenue, you will see hundreds of beautifully-dressed children waiting in line to join the massive costume party, which is a feature of Mardi Gras.

The Strange Cemeteries Are Different

If you happen to breathe your last breath in New Orleans, there is a big possibility that you will not be buried “six feet under.” Instead, you may end up in one of the iconic above-ground necropolises in the city.

The geographic placement of NOLA means it is basically below sea level. The entire city contains wet soil, making it unwise to bury the dead in the ground. Thus, mausoleums and tombs were built to solve this horrendous problem.

As time passed, these tombs developed. Nowadays, you will see colossal family tombs and grand cemeteries. This method of burial has now made its way into the core culture of the city. There are more than 40 legendary cemeteries in New Orleans – the largest being the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. If you happen to visit the place, make sure you check out the famous tombs of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo queen, and Homer Plessy, the civil rights activist.

Final Thoughts

Every city in the world has its own set of unique features. However, when it comes to New Orleans, the attributes are just too many. If on a short trip, there is every possibility that you will not be able to cover even half of what the city has to offer.

Make sure you do your research and identify the spots that you desire to visit before booking the tickets.

Tips for Driving Safely in a Busy City

Photo by Evan Simons on Unsplash

If you are a car owner and live in a busy city, where the roads are always packed in the peak hours, then every single drive can be daunting and strenuous. It’s not just about being careful and driving with absolute caution, but also, it’s about patience and keeping yourself under control so that nothing unfortunate happens. No matter how many buses, taxis, cars, and pedestrians are slowing you down, you need to keep your wits about and make sure that you don’t end up making a mistake that you will come to regret. To make this ordeal more manageable for you, we have created some tips to help you out in a busy city street.

Make Up Your Mind

Before anything else, you need to accept that you live in a traffic-jammed city where everything goes slow. If you don’t embrace this reality, you won’t expect to find yourself stuck in bad traffic, which could lead to stress building, irritation, and emotional outbursts. However, if you allow your brain to completely accept your condition and make up your mind that these traffic jams are going nowhere and that they are a part of your life now, trust us, things will start to get easier with time. Since you will expect a slow drive through the busy city street, it won’t anger you as much any longer. And if at times the jam isn’t that bad, you will feel that your mood is lifted!

Go Slow

People, especially in road blockages, tend to drive more aggressively due to the pent-up aggression caused by the slow progress of reaching your destination. In this hype of emotional build-up, you are more likely to rush every time there is a small window of space to move your car forward, potentially leading to either a small dent or a car crash against another vehicle or another present obstacle. That’s why it’s always recommended that you keep your speed slow despite all the frustrations and whatnot. This will enable you to plan your movements more accurately and anticipate any dangers that lie ahead, especially if the car in front of you jams its emergency breaks. In that case, going slow will provide you the much-needed time to apply your brakes to avoid any collision.

Keep Your Distance

It’s always highly tempting to keep your car clamped against the rear bumper of the vehicle in front of you when you find yourself packed in traffic congestion. Any small space you find, you want to rush over and put your car in it, no matter how insignificant it is. Despite how much we all want to do it, we shouldn’t! The less the distance between our car and the automobile in front of us, the less time you will have to respond to any emergency or mistake that the drive in the front makes could lead to a small or significant collision. And who will be at fault? No one, except you, because you were the one who failed to respond to the driver ahead and caused the crash. Now, on top of suffering the traffic jam still, you also will be paying for the repair cost of your and the other party’s vehicle, making the situation infinitely worse. If you have an accident and have some damage to your bumper, then DingGo can put you in touch with a professional in your area who can help fix the damage.

Plan Your Trip with a Dash Cam

It’s always helpful that you plan something before doing it. The same formula applies to taking out your car in a busy city. Studying the area beforehand will help you identify streets, locations, and the time they are jammed, which will allow you to plan your trip accordingly so that you can avoid the whole traffic congestion altogether by using a route that’s either free from traffic jams or has fewer blockages. It’s always a good idea to completely clear off school areas, special parties, sports matches, and other similar events that can potentially make the experience of driving by them a living nightmare.

If, however, you want complete accuracy when charting out the route you want to talk about and want real-time updates to the situation of road blockages and empty streets, then consider getting yourself a Dash Cam. They are packed with useful functions that allow you to drive more safely, make the whole driving experience more accessible and comfortable, and identify the best available route that will lead you straight to your destination. Thanks to the high-tech GPS feature integrated into these devices, the traffic jams that you will receive will always be accurate.

Pedestrians and Vulnerable Road Users

It’s not just the other vehicles that you need to look out for in a busy city. The streets crawl with pedestrians crossing the road or people cycling down the lane, which you always need to look out for. When the streets are packed, and the cars are moving slowly, pedestrians are more likely to take a chance to cross the road even if it’s not a designated area. You might even encounter some road users wearing earphones or using their mobile devices and are completely unaware of their surroundings. It would help if you were extra careful in such a situation because any distraction or minor slip-up can lead to severe consequences that can genuinely ruin your evening and pull on-road individuals in peril.

Ever Considered Alternatives?!

Friesen looks forward to Martinsville challenge

Photo by Barry Albert for SpeedwayMedia.com.

Six-year Camping World Truck Series veteran Stewart Friesen is currently below the cut line as the team heads to Martinsville Speedway, only four points behind Sheldon Creed in fourth place.

He’s made it into the Championship 4 just once in his career two years ago in 2019 with the help of a win at Phoenix. Friesen competed at Homestead (the original site of the Championship 4) and finished 11th. While not locked in at the moment, the Ontario native knows a stage win or two could change the outlook of things throughout the race.

Through the first two rounds of the 2021 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs, at least one or two drivers have been able to lock themselves into the next round with a win. Creed was able to do so at Darlington in the opening race, while Chandler Smith did so at the Bristol race last month. Smith’s teammate, John Hunter Nemechek, was extremely close to punching his ticket into the Championship 4 at Talladega but ended up getting wrecked coming to the finish line and was relegated to a fourth-place finish.

Since the Bristol race last September, no one has locked themselves into the season finale at Phoenix International Raceway which takes place Friday, Nov. 6, and will air live on Fox Sports 1. And with no one currently locked in, this leaves a wide variety of scenarios entering the Martinsville race Saturday as drivers attempt to climb above the cut line and claim a spot in the Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway.

While Friesen would love to win, he also realizes the importance of earning stage points throughout the race and feels his team is up to the challenge.

“I say top-fives pay the bills, but we need to be in the top-fives in stages, if not win a stage to make maximum stage points and have a shot to win,” Friesen said about his chances. “The Playoffs are all about running up front and winning. We’ve been in the top five. We’ve been close, so hopefully, if we could get a win that would be awesome. I believe in our team. I don’t believe we have an outside shot. I believe we will have a fast enough truck to compete with our competitors in the chase, and nothing is out of the question at this point.”

Having made the Championship 4 once in his career, Friesen is not too worried about how things will shape out during the race and is focused on his own performance. The Halmar Friesen Racing driver knows he’ll have to be patient throughout the 200-lap event.

“I’ve been through it. I’m not losing sleep over it yet,” Friesen added. “Maybe Friday night a little bit. Anything can happen in the Truck Series. I’ve lost races in the 11th hour. I’m optimistic. I think I can go in there and just try to keep my emotion in check all race long and not get excited if something happens in the first or second stage and then we have to kind of drop the plow at the end and start putting the elbows up. That’s what we will try to do. I believe we can bring a fast truck. We had a fast truck there in the fall last year. We were able to win a stage, and we will have a similar package – which I think we even refined to be better yet. I hope we will be fast enough to stay up front and keep guys off of my back bumper. That’s going to be the main thing.”

Friesen has no wins in the 2021 Truck Series season and says nothing would be sweeter than changing that with another shot at the championship.

“It would be very gratifying,” Friesen added about making the Championship 4. “Not only for me but our entire race team. For where we were from the start of 2020, starting the new team from the ground up with Halmar, with the support from TRD and the guys from Toyota to where we are now – since the Playoffs have started competing for top-fives. Building a championship-winning team was the goal all along and we knew it would take time, so I think we are probably ahead of realistically the time it takes to build a championship team.

“We’ve done a really good job. Our guys have done a really good job. Chris Larsen with providing the equipment to do this. We knew where we wanted to be and we are there, and for us to make that Championship 4 this year in our second full season would be really, really gratifying. If we don’t, it is what it is. As long as we go to Martinsville and have a solid truck and don’t shoot ourselves in the foot – if we put our cards on the table and it is what it is at the end of the day and we don’t make it, hey, at least we went down trying and we will be back in 2022 to try again. If we do make that Championship 4, we are really excited about that. We have a good package for Phoenix. We have good notes for Martinsville and Phoenix. I believe we have an outside shot at the championship, so we will see what happens.”

Currently, in the 2021 Truck Series, the Ontario native has zero wins, six top fives and eight Top 10 finishes along with four DNFs. In addition, Friesen has led 15 laps and has an average finish of 15.0.

Other notes of interest: Friesen is currently scheduled to test the NASCAR NextGen car at Wythe Raceway, which is similar to the Bristol Dirt Track and he will be testing a harder tire.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ penultimate race at Martinsville Speedway is slated for Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. ET, live on Fox Sports 1 and MRN Radio.

Playoff Standings with 1 race to go in the Round of 6.

GEARWRENCH® Partners with Stewart-Haas Racing

Premier Hand Tool Brand Will Serve as Primary Partner for Kevin Harvick and No. 4 Team in Five NASCAR Cup Series Races;

GEARWRENCH Becomes Official Tool Partner of Stewart-Haas Racing and Secures Naming Rights to Main Assembly Area, the ‘GEARWRENCH Garage’

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Oct. 27, 2021) – GEARWRENCH®, a premier hand tool brand from Apex Tool Group, has joined Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), the championship-winning NASCAR team co-owned by NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart and industrialist Gene Haas.

Headlining the partnership is a five-race primary sponsorship of NASCAR Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 team of SHR that begins with the 2022 season. GEARWRENCH will be featured as an associate sponsor on the No. 4 Ford Mustang when not serving in a primary role.

Additionally, GEARWRENCH becomes the Official Tool Partner of SHR and gets naming rights to the main assembly area of SHR’s 140,000-square-foot headquarters, which will be known as the GEARWRENCH Garage.

“This partnership with Stewart-Haas Racing provides GEARWRENCH with a 360-degree activation plan that allows us to authentically highlight our tools and all that they’re capable of,” said Janet Bolin, Brand Manager, Sports Partnerships, GEARWRENCH. “Kevin Harvick has proven to be a top performer in the NASCAR Cup Series for more than two decades and SHR is a team built by racers, for racers. It’s a hands-on organization, and that’s why it’s a great fit for the premier hand tool brand.”

Since the launch of its original and patented five-degree ratcheting wrench in 1996, GEARWRENCH has continuously led the industry with breakthroughs in wrenches, ratchets, sockets and specialty tools. Today, the GEARWRENCH product range comprises a complete line of tools for automotive and industrial users while also offering tool storage, lighting and shop assist equipment.

“We’ve prided ourselves in putting the right people in the right positions at SHR, and the people who turn wrenches on our racecars are the best in the business,” said Stewart, who scored 16 of his 49 career NASCAR Cup Series wins as a driver/owner at SHR, along with his third and final championship in 2011. “We have high standards, and GEARWRENCH tools not only meet, but exceed those standards. This is a partner who is as dedicated to winning as we are.”

Harvick has won 58 NASCAR Cup Series races, placing him 10th on the series’ all-time win list. The 45-year-old from Bakersfield, California, won the championship in 2014, and the 2022 season will be his 22nd year competing at NASCAR’s highest level.

“I’m the guy driving the racecar, but NASCAR is definitely a team sport,” Harvick said. “Preparation is one of the most important elements of success. If you’re not prepared when you come to the track, you’ve already lost. Having the right tools for the job is a must, and having a partner in GEARWRENCH makes us a better race team.”

Sunday Race Info:
Race: Xfinity 500
Date/Time: Sunday, Oct. 31/2:00 p.m. ET
Distance: 500 laps/263 miles
Track Length: .526 miles

Express Notes:

Kansas Recap: Hamlin started sixth in the FedEx Freight Toyota and asked for help tightening up the car’s handling throughout the first two stages. Extremely windy conditions also made the car a white-knuckled handful, with gusts frequently pushing drivers up the track and sometimes into the wall. The FedEx Racing driver was able to keep the car out of the fence despite the challenging weather and finished the first two stages in fifth and eighth, respectively. The #11 team made some headway on the car’s handling in Stage 3, allowing Hamlin to circle the mile-and-a-half oval a little faster. Track position was difficult to make up, but he was able to climb multiple spots to cross the finish line in fifth. The result put him 32 points above the cut line to make the Championship 4 – the final four drivers who will compete for the NASCAR Cup Series trophy in the last race of the season at Phoenix Raceway.

Martinsville Preview: The Cup Series moves on next to Martinsville Speedway on Sunday for the final race in the Playoffs’ Round of 8. Denny Hamlin and the FedEx Racing team will look to claim their spot in the Championship 4 either with a win or a solid points day. In his 31 career races at the half-mile, paperclip-shaped oval, Hamlin has notched five wins and 16 top-5 finishes.

Hamlin Conversation – Martinsville:

How do you feel about your chances at Martinsville and the short track package?

“I’m confident in our chances at Martinsville. We’ve been very strong at these types of racetracks, and I’ll think we’ll have a really good FedEx Toyota when we go there. We want to battle for a win. Because if we’re in the battle for a win, we’ll be fine no matter where we finish.”

Will you have a particular strategy, given your points position and what you need to advance?

“I think we should be OK. But, of course, you just never know what can happen. I just need to make sure I get some stage points and don’t give it away early, and I think we’ll be alright to advance.”

FedEx “Drop Off, Win Big” Sweepstakes on the #11: The TV panel of the #11 car will carry a special message at Martinsville, encouraging FedEx small business customers to participate in the “Drop Off, Win Big” sweepstakes going on now through January. Small business owners can register online to have a chance to win up to $10,000, just for dropping off their packages at any of the 60,000-plus locations across the U.S. The TV panel message points fans to the URL where they can learn more and enter: fedex.com/dropoffsweeps.

FedEx Ground Along for the Ride at Martinsville: With the national observance of Corporate Compliance Week (Nov. 7-13) approaching, the alpha code “DELV” on Hamlin’s car recognizes the extraordinary focus on processes and compliance by the FedEx Ground’s Delaware Valley District.

Creed will once again sport a special Breast Cancer Awareness paint scheme that will feature pink as the primary color instead of the familiar orange. As part of the Martin Truex, Jr. Foundation and NASCAR Foundation Honor a Cancer Hero program, riding along with Sheldon will be Karen Morgan, a Glioblastoma cancer fighter who unfortunately lost her life to the terrible disease in 2020.
  • Chassis history/info: Creed and the No. 2 crew will race with chassis no. 310 at Martinsville Speedway. This chassis was last raced at Bristol in August, where Sheldon was able to dominate and lead a race high 189 of 200 laps before receiving contact from another competitor and finishing 19th. The truck has four Top 10 finishes to its credit, including an eighth place finish last year at Martinsville after leading 65 laps.
  • Back2Back: Sheldon Creed enters the penultimate race of 2021 above the Playoffs cutline by a mere five points. In order to advance to Phoenix and contend for the championship, the No. 2 driver needs to net as many points as possible to ensure that he remains fourth or better. The defending champion has been a threat to win week in and week out since the Playoffs began at Gateway in August, but nothing is a given until the checkered flag flies at “The Paperclip”.
  • Quote: “Everything’s going to be on the line in Martinsville this Saturday. With nobody truly locked into the Championship 4 yet, the aggression level is going to be through the roof. Thankfully, I know that my team has been putting in so much work to make sure that our No. 2 Chevy will be as fast as possible. We know what we need to do to advance, so it’s all on us to make it happen. I’ll be ready to fight as hard as I can to make sure we contend for this championship in Phoenix.”

Zane Smith, No. 21 MRC Construction Chevrolet Silverado

  • Chassis history/info: Smith and the No. 21 team will utilize chassis no. 325 under the lights in Southern Virginia. Zane has raced this chassis ten times, earning Top 10 finishes in six of those races. Most recently, this Silverado competed at Gateway to open up the Playoffs, where it led 19 laps before having a rear gear failure. Last season, the truck started second and finished a stout third at Martinsville.
  • 21in21: Due to some bad luck and poor finishing results in the Round of 8, Zane Smith is in a must win situation heading into Martinsville in order to compete for a championship. Though winless this year, Smith has historically been hard to beat at short tracks, with wins all over the country in ARCA and Super Late Model competition. Down, but not out, Zane Smith looks to fight hard and come in clutch to earn himself a grandfather clock en route to Phoenix.
  • Quote: “I’m ready to go up to Martinsville; last year was my first time there and we ended up finishing third with a great shot at winning at the end. I’ve been prepared to go into this race on either side of the cutline, either good or bad. Obviously, we all know which side we would rather choose, but we’re on the outside looking in so it’ll be fun to race for the win while battling the pressure the Playoffs bring. I’m hoping to grab a grandfather clock along with a ticket to the Championship 4 race in Phoenix.”

  • Chassis history/info: Purdy and the No. 23 team will compete with chassis no. 313 at Martinsville Speedway, a track that has seen this truck parked in victory lane once before with Johnny Sauter in 2018. This truck has also visited victory lane with Sauter at Bristol Motor Speedway as well, and was most recently driven to a sixth place finish at Gateway, where Purdy earned his best finish of the season. - Where it all began: Martinsville Speedway is the track where Chase Purdy made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at in 2018. It has been quite some time since he has raced at “The Paperclip”, but Purdy will look to lean on his short track prowess and finish out the season with another solid run at the 0.533-mile bullring. - Quote: “Looking forward to this weekend! Martinsville is a really cool racetrack that suits my driving style. I’m sure that it’s going to be an exciting, nerve wracking day since it’s a cutoff race, but man, I love short track racing. “

Jack Wood, No. 24 Chevy Cares Chevrolet Silverado

Martinsville Speedway Stats

  • Jack Wood has no previous experience at Martinsville Speedway in any series.

2021 NCWTS Season Stats

Chevrolet has contributed over $15 million so far to benefit breast cancer screening, patient care, research and supporting the special people on the front lines of this fight. As part of the Martin Truex, Jr. Foundation and NASCAR Foundation Honor a Cancer Hero program, riding along with Jack will be Karen Morgan, a Glioblastoma cancer fighter who unfortunately lost her life to the terrible disease in 2020, and Debbi Fiore, a cancer survivor.
  • Chassis history/info: Wood and his No. 24 team will run chassis no. 301 at Martinsville Speedway. This Chevy started out life as an intermediate truck, posting wins at Chicagoland Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway with Johnny Sauter in 2017, but has recently been converted over to a short track spec. Jack qualified second at Nashville earlier this season driving 301, and it was most recently used by Doug Coby at Bristol, where it finished 12th.
  • Short Track Rookie: Not only will Jack Wood be making his first ever laps around Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, he will also make his first ever start at a short track in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Wood hopes to net a clean finish and rebound from some recent misfortunes in his previous races at Darlington, Las Vegas, and Talladega.
  • Quote: “I’m looking forward to getting back on track at Martinsville. Over the downtime, I’ve been putting in a lot of work off the track trying to be as prepared as I possibly can. Short tracks are places that I’ve struggled with in the past, so I’ve been putting a lot of focus on getting better there. I’m excited to race at The Paperclip, and hopefully our No. 24 GMS Chevy Cares Silverado runs great.”

Tyler Ankrum, No. 26 LiUNA! Chevrolet Silverado

Martinsville Speedway Stats

  • NCWTS Starts: 4, Best start: 5th, Best finish: 12th (2020)

2021 NCWTS Season Stats

  • Sponsor spotlight: LiUNA! returns this week to feature on Tyler Ankrum’s No. 26 Silverado with a spooky Halloween-themed paint scheme. As part of the Martin Truex, Jr. Foundation and NASCAR Foundation Honor a Cancer Hero program, riding along with Tyler will be Karen Morgan, a Glioblastoma cancer fighter who unfortunately lost her life to the terrible disease in 2020.
  • Chassis history: Ankrum and his No. 26 crew will compete using chassis no. 305 at “The Paperclip”. This Silverado has been raced five times previously with Tyler behind the wheel, posting three Top 10 finishes. In 2018, this chassis visited victory lane at Texas Motor Speedway with Justin Haley as the driver.
  • From Humble Beginnings: In October of 2018, Tyler Ankrum made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Martinsville Speedway as one of the youngest drivers in the field. On that day, a then seventeen-year-old Ankrum started 19th and finished 18th in his first ever truck race. Fun fact, GMS Racing emerged victorious in that race with longtime veteran Johnny Sauter, who at that time was thirty nine years old.
  • Quote: “I’ve never really had the best of luck at Martinsville, but there’s always one thing that I look forward to when we go there – the Martinsville hot dog. I think we will have a pretty fast truck there this year, we had a pretty fast one last year as well, but it’s so hard to pass because both lanes get plugged up. It’s tough to be fast on a long run, because the runs aren’t really long enough, but it’s also hard to be fast on a short run, because you’ll give up speed on the ‘long’ run. The race should go by really quickly if it’s under green, but it takes forever under cautions. Either way, I think we’ll be alright and have a fun day.”
