M&M’S Halloween Racing: Kyle Busch Kansas Advance

KYLE BUSCH
M&M’S Halloween Costume Party

HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina (Oct. 19, 2021) – It’s October and, as usual this time of year, M&M’S has brought back its Halloween-themed No. 18 M&M’S Toyota for driver Kyle Busch during the next two NASCAR Cup Series races – this weekend at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City and the following weekend at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway – during one of M&M’S busiest seasons.

Busch and his M&M’S-themed Halloween “costume” first head to this weekend’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas hoping for a win that would lock him into the Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway Nov. 7. For his part, Kansas hasn’t been nearly as spooky over his last 14 races there as opposed to a vastly stark record in his first 13 starts at the 1.5-mile oval, during which he had eight finishes of 20th or worse.

The two-time Cup Series champion collected two top-five finishes in a row in the fall 2014 and 2015 Kansas races before he broke through for his first Cup Series win at there in May 2016. That’s when the surface finally started to wear and become more agreeable to Busch’s driving style. He now has 11 top-10 finishes in his last 13 starts there, a streak that at one point included five consecutive top-fives.

Even better news for Busch and the M&M’S Halloween team is they are the most recent Cup Series winners at the Midwest track in May as they scored their second career Kansas victory and first of two wins so far this season.

Sunday’s Cup Series race at Kansas marks the second race of the Round of 8 of this year’s playoffs. Busch’s stage win and eighth-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth last weekend helped boost him to fourth in standings, eight points above the top-four cutline. Kyle Larson won last weekend’s race and is the first driver eligible for the Championship 4 at Phoenix. With a win at either of these next two events, Busch can join Larson at Phoenix for his shot to race for the title for the sixth time in his career.

So, as the Cup Series heads to the Heartland of America Sunday, Busch will aim to make it a 2021 sweep of both Kansas races and the championship implications that come with it. And with Halloween fast approaching, Busch and his No. 18 team would like nothing more than to take their colorful, Halloween-themed M&M’S “costume” to victory lane.

KYLE BUSCH, Driver of the No. 18 M&M’S Halloween Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing:

Have you looked forward to racing at Kansas more after you won there?

“I have. Also, it was – even the last few times before we won there for the first time in 2016, we had some really strong runs there. We finished in the top-10 a lot there over the last 12 or 13 races. We seem to have gotten a setup or a hold of this place, I’d say, and hopefully we don’t screw that up this time around and we can continue our strong runs and our fast pace of being able to have a shot to win. Looking forward to getting back in our M&M’S Halloween scheme and getting them a win in a car that always looks great every year.”

While Texas was somewhat disappointing, how much do you take from that to Kansas this weekend?

“Being able to be fast with the 550 (horsepower) package for the most part his year, Texas was tough, for sure. We obviously won earlier this year at Kansas and really look forward to going back again this weekend. It’s been a good place for us more recently. Excited to have the opportunity to go back there and run up front all day and mind our P’s and Q’s and get some points. Scoring a win would be even bigger, but ultimately having another solid day to keep our point total up will be important, as well.”

Do you think Kansas will be similar to Texas?

“A little bit similar since it’s the 550 package, but it’s not going to be as one groove-ish fighting for the first lane of that (traction) spray, like it was at Texas. You are going to be able to widen out and race all over the track, so hopefully that should be a little better and we can stay up front and have a shot there.”

Talk about this weekend at Kansas Speedway and your expectations on the track.

“Kansas has been a good place for our sport. You know the crowd, the reception, the racetrack, the community has really built up around the racetrack there over the last 10 years, or so. It’s been a lot of fun to see all that happen and I’m looking forward to the race. It’s been a great racetrack for us, lately. We’ve had some good runs there once the track aged. We’ve kind of seemed to maybe have figured out the place a little bit better. And, you know, we’re looking forward to the opportunity of being able to go out there and hopefully get ourselves a win with our M&M’S Halloween Camry.”

ADVANCE NOTES

Buescher at Kansas Speedway

· Buescher makes his 12th Cup start at Kansas on Sunday where he carries an 18.5 average finish. He’s coming off an eighth-place run there this spring, his second-best result at the 1.5-mile track outside of a sixth-place run in 2017.

· He also finished 10th in the 2019 spring race, and followed that up with a 13th-place finish that fall.

· He made three Xfinity stats at Kansas with a best finish of sixth in 2015 in the No. 60 entry.

Scott Graves at Kansas Speedway

· Graves will call his 11th Cup race from Kansas, where his best finish of seventh came back in 2017 with Daniel Suarez.

· In his first-ever Cup race at Kansas, Graves finished 11th with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. He’s coming off a 16th-place run this spring with Ryan Newman.

· He also called three Xfinity races at Kansas – two with Chris Buescher – including a sixth-place run in 2015 and third with Suarez in 2016.

QUOTE WORTHY
Buescher on racing at Kansas:
“We’re anxious to get back on track and turn our bad luck around from last weekend in Texas, where we had turned our race into what was going to be a decent outcome. Kansas is a really wide, fast race track all the way around, and we ran well there this spring finishing eighth. We’re coming down to the end here, and hope to keep building positive momentum heading into the offseason.”

Last Time Out
Buescher turned his day around at Texas and had a solid top-15, if not top-10 run going before getting caught up in a late-race incident with under 10 laps remaining. He would finish 21st.

On the Car
Fastenal returns to the fold at Roush Fenway in 2021 for its 11th season. They spent three years on the No. 99 before jumping to the No. 17 Cup Series entry, and were the primary partner on the No. 60 Xfinity team that captured the owner’s championship in 2011.

Fastenal will feature top suppliers Danfoss, Ingersoll Rand, Georgia Pacific, Energizer and Body Guard on Buescher’s Mustang as he competes this weekend. For more information on these suppliers, visit Fastenal.com, and stay up-do-date on social @FastenalRacing, @Fastenal.

In partnership with the NASCAR Foundation and the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation (MTJF), Buescher and the No. 17 team will participate in the second annual Honor a Cancer Hero Campaign this weekend at Kansas.

M. Andrew Phillips, a native of Denver, Colorado, is a cancer survivor and will ride with Buescher on the driver’s side of the No. 17 car at Kansas. Andy’s father passed away 21 years ago due to cancer, and his wife was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Cancer in 2017 and passed away two years later. Six months later, Andy learned he had the same type of cancer. But, after surgery, chemo and radiation, Phillips is on the upswing and has been raising his 8-year-old grandson through all of it, keeping his positive, and fighter attitude.

Caitlin Meaney, a native of Newbury Park, California, will be honored on the passenger name rail of Buescher’s car. Meaney, despite a heroic, five-year battle with bone cancer, which included six chemotherapy drugs, nine surgeries (eight of which were thoracotomies) and one clinical trial, lost her battle on April 24, 2021. Meaney is the cousin of Tyler Ingleston, who along with his wife Stephanie – current Roush Fenway Racing employee – helped put together this special remembrance. She was 18 years old, and will forever be an inspiration to everyone who met her.

QUOTE WORTHY
Newman on racing at Kansas:
“More than anything else, we’re ready to turn our luck around this weekend coming off two early ends the last couple weeks. Kansas is a fast race track and one that I was fortunate to be successful at in my first few trips early on in my career. We’re hopeful for a solid run Sunday with Violet Defense back on board the No. 6.”

Last Time Out
Newman was caught up in the largest crash in Texas Motor Speedway last week on lap 31, which ended his day early for the second week in a row.

On the Car
Violet Defense, who made its NASCAR debut with Chris Buescher on the No. 17 machine a few weeks ago in Las Vegas, returns this weekend as the primary on the No. 6 team. They will continue to serve as a partner through the 2023 season as part of the multi-year partnership.

In partnership with the NASCAR Foundation and the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation (MTJF), Newman and the No. 6 team will participate in the second annual Honor a Cancer Hero Campaign this weekend at Kansas.

Jack Sherman, a native of Christiansburg, Virginia, will be honored on Newman’s car on the name rail. Sherman, nominated by his parents Alan and Shannon, lost his four-year battle with cancer at age 17 in 2006. Ford Performance NASCAR: Round of 8 Continues This Weekend at Kansas Speedway

FORD PERFORMANCE NASCAR: KANSAS PLAYOFF ADVANCE

The Round of 8 for the NASCAR Cup and NASCAR XFINITY Series continues this weekend at Kansas Speedway with Ford drivers Ryan Blaney (Cup) and Austin Cindric (NXS) holding down Championship 4 transfer spots in their respective series with two races remaining. ROUND OF 8 NCS PLAYOFF STANDINGS (Top 4 Advance After Martinsville)

6th – Brad Keselowski (-15)
8th – Joey Logano (-43)

FORD IN THE NASCAR CUP SERIES AT KANSAS

· Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano all have multiple Cup wins at Kansas.
· Mark Martin registered Ford’s first Cup win at Kansas in 2005.

ROUND OF 8 NXS PLAYOFF STANDINGS (Top 4 Advance After Martinsville)

2nd – Austin Cindric (+26)

FORD IN THE NASCAR XFINITY SERIES AT KANSAS

· Ford has four NASCAR XFINITY Series wins at Kansas.
· Jeff Green won the inaugural series race in 2001 while Jeff Burton won the following year.
· Chase Briscoe has Ford’s last series win at the track (2020).

KANSAS RANKS #2 ON FORD CUP PLAYOFF WIN LIST

Ford has had a great deal of success at Kansas Speedway in the playoffs, going into this weekend’s race with seven post-season victories. That figure is tied for second with Homestead-Miami Speedway on the all-time playoff win list for Ford. Joey Logano leads the way with three Kansas playoff wins while Greg Biffle registered two. Ford’s winningest track in playoff competition is Talladega Superspeedway with nine.

BLANEY SHOWING CONSISTENCY

Ryan Blaney finds himself second in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings, 17 points above the Championship 4 cutoff and is coming off a solid sixth-place run last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. That continued a stretch which has seen Blaney finish 10th or better in 12 of the last 16 races, which includes back-to-back wins at Michigan and Daytona, for an average finish of 8.1. He’ll look to keep that consistency going on Sunday at Kansas Speedway, where he has six top-10 finishes in 13 career starts.

KEEP AN EYE ON KESELOWSKI

Brad Keselowski comes into this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race 15 points behind fourth-place Kyle Busch for the final Championship 4 spot, but the next two stops in the Round of 8 have statistically been among his best. On tracks where Keselowski has made at least 15 career starts, Kansas ranks as his sixth-best with an average finish of 11.3 (23 starts) while Martinsville is fifth at 11.2 (23 starts). Keselowski, who owns two wins at both places, heads to Kansas having finished fourth or better in four of his last five starts, but Martinsville has been even better as he boasts nine finishes of fifth or better in the last 11 races.

LOGANO GOING FOR FOURTH KANSAS VICTORY

Joey Logano will be looking for his second straight Kansas playoff victory this weekend and fourth overall at the 1.5-mile track after he took the lead from Kevin Harvick with 45 laps to go and won last year’s event to advance to the Championship 4. Logano, whose three wins at Kansas is tied for a personal best at one track with Michigan International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, comes into the weekend 43 points below the final transfer spot. He won for the first time at Kansas in 2014, and then did it again one year later in a well-documented battle with Matt Kenseth that resulted in contact as the two entered turn one with five laps to go. That controversial finish marked Logano’s second straight win in the Chase and led to a sweep of the Contender Round as he took the checkered flag the following week at Talladega Superspeedway.

CINDRIC PEAKING AT RIGHT TIME?

Austin Cindric’s fifth-place finish in Saturday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway continued a streak in which the Team Penske driver has five top-5 efforts in the last seven races. Overall, Cindric leads the NASCAR XFINITY Series with 19 top-5 and 23 top-10 finishes in 30 starts while his five victories is tied for the most among series drivers. Cindric goes into this weekend’s action at Kansas Speedway second in the standings and 26 points above the Championship 4 cutline.

Alfredo and Speedy Cash Return to Kansas Speedway

Alfredo Looks to Rebound After Fire in Texas

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (October 19, 2021) – Speedy Cash will return with Anthony Alfredo this weekend at the Kansas Speedway. After a good run was cut prematurely short at Texas, the No. 38 team is looking to rebound this Sunday afternoon.

“It was great seeing all the Speedy Cash folks in Texas last weekend. We had a big Texas-sized steak dinner on Saturday night and we were excited for Sunday. It was just a shame that our race was cut short,” Alfredo said.

The Speedy Cash Ford Mustang driver was poised for a good finish, but a late-race wreck caused a fire. Fire is one of the most dangerous hazards while racing.

“I’m thankful to have been able to get out unharmed. It’s credit to all the safety and innovation,” continued Alfredo. “I have had a car on fire before. I knew to stay calm, but also move quickly. I had the composure to get everything off and get out of the car. It may have seemed to take a little bit, but I was in control of the situation.”

Now Alfredo looks forward to Kansas.

“We have been getting better at intermediate tracks, and I know we can put up a good finish at Kansas. We had a top-25 finish there back in May, and was on the verge of breaking into the top-15. We had a great car then and hopefully it will be speedy on Sunday.’

The race will be televised live on NBCSN at 3:00 p.m. ET.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (Oct. 19, 2021) — The fastest and most powerful cars to ever race at South Boston Speedway and a new speedway partner will be featured in a new two-night event in April 2022 as part of the track’s 65th anniversary season.

For the first time in South Boston Speedway’s history, sleek 1,600-pound, near-900-horsepower open-wheel 410-winged sprint cars will hit the .4-mile oval during the Sentara Healthcare American Sprint Car Weekend on April 29-30, 2022.

Full shows for the 410-winged sprint cars will be featured both nights including heat races, a B-Main and feature races.

The Sentara Healthcare American Sprint Car Weekend was unveiled to race fans attending last Saturday night’s season-ending CARS Tour event at South Boston Speedway with a demonstration of the powerful 410-winged sprint cars by visiting drivers from the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Car Series.

“We are very excited to host 410-winged sprint cars for the first time ever here at South Boston Speedway,” said Incoming South Boston Speedway General Manager Chase Brashears. “We couldn’t think of a better time to showcase this event than the speedway’s 65th anniversary season. Race fans from throughout the region will not want to miss seeing these insanely fast, near-900-horsepower machines compete here at South Boston Speedway.”

Along with the first-ever event for 410-winged sprint cars, South Boston Speedway welcomes a new partner, Sentara Healthcare.

“We are really excited to bring this to Halifax County,” said Samantha Thompson, Practice Manager of Sentara Southern Virginia Orthopedics and Sentara Halifax General Surgery. “South Boston Speedway is so important to us, and we want to promote it and do as much as we can for the community.”

Thompson says she is excited about Sentara Healthcare’s first-time partnership with South Boston Speedway and first involvement in auto racing.

“I can’t explain how excited we are to do it,” Thompson remarked with a big smile. “This is a first-time event here and we’re looking forward to it.”

South Boston Speedway Director of Marketing Carly Brashears said having Sentara Healthcare as a new partner is big for the speedway.

“We are excited to welcome Sentara Healthcare to the South Boston Speedway family,” said Carly Brashears. “Sentara’s local medical center, Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston, Virginia, is a great asset to our community and we are excited about our new partnership with them.”

The fastest unofficial lap ever turned at South Boston Speedway, 13.5 seconds, was recorded during Saturday’s demonstration run of the 410-winged sprint cars by Nolan Allison of Greensboro, North Carolina and Anthony Linkenhoker of Louisa, Virginia, with Allison hitting the mark. Both drivers predict lap times will be faster when the competitors visit South Boston Speedway next April and get their cars dialed in for the track.

“The speeds at this track will be extremely fast,” Allison remarked. “I think with the corner speed, the banking and how wide the track is, you’re just not going to touch the brakes. Last weekend we were probably running around 150 mph or so at times at Montgomery, Alabama. I think we will be pushing that, if not more, here at South Boston Speedway because the corners are so fast. I’m very excited about competing here.”

Like Allison, Linkenhoker is excited about racing at South Boston Speedway.
“I can’t wait,” Linkenhoker remarked. “This is an absolutely beautiful facility, and the track is great. The track is extremely smooth and that builds confidence in the car.

“Must See Racing has the top names in the sport,” Linkenhoker pointed out. “You’re racing with the best of the best. It’s going to be a great show.”

All four of South Boston Speedway’s regular racing divisions, the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Model Stock Car Division, the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, and the Budweiser Hornets Division will be in action during the April 29-30 weekend. In addition, fans will see the competitors of the Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club in action.

The first race of the night on Friday night, April 29 will get the green flag at 8 p.m. The opening night’s racing action will feature a full show for the 410-winged sprint cars along with races for South Boston Speedway’s Limited Sportsman, Budweiser Pure Stock and Budweiser Hornets Division competitors.

Action will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, April 30 with fans seeing another full show for the 410-winged sprint cars. South Boston Speedway’s NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Model Stock Car Division drivers and teams will also be featured that night. The competitors of the Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club will also be on hand, making the first of their two scheduled appearances for the 2022 season.
Ticket information and additional details for the event will be announced at a later date.

The latest news and information about South Boston Speedway can be found on the South Boston Speedway website, southbostonspeedway.com, and through the speedway’s social media channels.

DXDT Racing Concludes 2021 SRO America Season with Three Podiums

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., (October 19, 2021) – The 2021 SRO America season concluded on Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and DXDT Racing has finished the year with three additional podiums across the team’s three customer racing programs. Running in the Fanatec GT World Challenge America, GT America, and TC America championships, the six-car team has closed out 2021 with eight wins, 21 podiums, and 37 top-five finishes.

Now that the successful 2021 season has come to a close, the team will head back to headquarters in Statesville, North Carolina to prepare for the fast-approaching 2022 season, which will be announced at a later date.

GT World Challenge America / Indianapolis 8 Hour
In the headlining series, the trio of Mercedes AMG GT3 cars showed strong speeds early into the finale weekend, with the No. 19 of Erin Vogel, Michael Cooper, and Thomas Merrill qualifying third in Sunday’s main event. The season finale race for the GT World Challenge America was held within the first three hours of the Indianapolis 8 Hour, acting as a race within a race. Though the No. 19 Mercedes showed early promise, the car ultimately retired early due to heavy damage sustained during the opening race. The No. 04 Crowdstrike Mercedes AMG GT3 of George Kurtz, Colin Braun, and Ben Keating placed third at the three-hour mark, securing the team’s final GTWCA podium of the 2021 season. After a strong run to make up for lost time following a tire issue, the car retired with just two hours remaining, leaving the No. 63 Mercedes AMG GT3 as the sole DXDT Racing entry remaining.

The final five hours of the race were filled with caution periods and penalties throughout the entire field, consistently bumping competitors out of position. The No. 63 Mercedes AMG GT3 of David Askew, Ryan Dalziel, and Scott Smithson had a strong run in the top five for the majority of the race, but several drive-through penalties ultimately cost the team the podium finish, coming in fourth place, three laps down from third.

I think this is the third Eight-Hour race that DXDT has done, and this year with the most cars we’ve ever run here. We’ve won it twice before including last year. This year we came up a little short. We had to retire the 19 car and eventually the 04 car. The 63 car soldiered on and came home fourth. Two Bronze drivers made a few too many mistakes, and that’s what happens in endurance racing. It’s a game of making the fewest mistakes. But we finished the race and we’re happy about that. We’re excited to move on to next year and a new season and come back here and do it all over again.

That was possibly one of the most frustratingly-run races I’ve ever done: Just a combination of errors from race control ruining not just our day but those of many other cars. It’s disappointing. We made our own mistakes but we got behind on a couple of penalties that weren’t our fault. We had to take some risks and it caught us out in a couple of incidents with David and Scott. It seemed like we had pretty good pace and were just as good as the other factory Mercedes. It’s a frustrating day but kind of a good result at the end. We had a good last four hours of the race. Both David and Scott had good stints and I was pretty happy with my own stint at the end.

It was a lot of fun. I finally figured out the car, so overall I think it was really good. It was a challenging event, but overall I’d say it was pretty good.

It was a tough day for the CrowdStrike/AWS/DXDT Mercedes. It’s not the result we were looking for, but I’m proud of our guys. George and Ben did a super job in the car. Luck just wasn’t on our side. You’ll have those days in racing. More than anything, I’m proud of the group and happy for all the CrowdStrike folks that got to come out and see what all this is about. When those folks come out, it’s always a lot of fun and reinvigorates you with what racing it is, how cool it is and how special it is to get a chance to be a part of. I enjoyed our weekend. We have a lot of positives to take away and look forward to what’s next.

We had an incredible time together at this race last year. At the podium, we decided right then and there, that we should do this again next year. Everything was the same except for the result! What I mean by that is that I really enjoy driving with Colin and George, and working with everyone on the DXDT Racing team. They were all incredible to work with. I do enjoy the Mercedes-AMG. It was difficult to struggle with the performance of our car and not find the smoking gun. We were kind of hopeful that we would start the race and everything would be better. That’s just not the way it worked out. I don’t really think any of us thought it would be much different than that, but when you have a car that allows you to compete at the front, that makes for a long eight-hour race. All of us were just going through the motions of the race because we knew we weren’t going to have a chance at a podium. Regardless, it’s still a lot of fun to run with DXDT and be back in the Mercedes-AMG. I do enjoy the event, the car and the team. It’s one of those experiences that you’re going to have every once in awhile

I really had fun here this weekend. It was great driving with Michael and Thomas, and it was great having Thomas on the team with us. We qualified very well and knew we had a some good pace for the race. Unfortunately, things just didn’t work out to our plan. I’m happy to cap off a great season with a lot of podiums. I feel like it was a wonderful debut season for us in this car and I’m looking forward to more of that in the future. Thank you to DXDT Racing for providing a great team and program to make this possible.

It was a tough end to the year but I think overall we can take a lot of positives away from 2021. It was Erin’s first season in a GT3 car and she’s really come a long way. Her pace has improved a lot the second half of the season. Her performances at Sebring and here at Indy pace-wise were really impressive and I’m looking forward to doing more of this next year and fighting even further up the grid. Thank you to DXDT Racing for allowing us this opportunity.

It was so great to join DXDT Racing, Erin, and Michael in this car. I had a lot of fun this weekend. Unfortunately, luck was not on our side. I hope we get a chance to do it again next year.
GT America
After a shortened qualifying session at a chilly and slick Indianapolis Motor Speedway, CJ Moses found himself starting from the rear of the field during GT America qualifying for race one. He started the race from seventeenth overall and quickly drove his way through slower traffic to finish in seventh. In race two, Moses had a better starting position but spent most of the race battling with another car just slightly slower than his No. 58 Mercedes AMG GT3. He earned another seventh-place finish, with DXDT closing out the GT America season for Moses and George Kurtz with a total of two wins and four podiums.

The race weekend went well. It started off not-so-great in qualifying and ended up starting from the back. I made my way to mid-pack with a great run. I was able in the second race to go out and race really hard against a car I co-own. I wasn’t willing to damage either the DXDT car or the GMG car I was racing against. It was a fun battle. I was glad to end the season on a high note. Even though it was shortened for me due to work commitments, it has been a great one. I look forward to doing it all again next year and making even more races.

Kevin Boehm and the No. 9 Honda Civic Type R had the strongest weekend of the DXDT Racing group, driving to the podium twice in the double-header weekend. After leading most of race one to finish in second, the engineer-turned race car driver closed out his 2021 season with a victory in race two, capturing his third win and eighth podium of the year.

It’s really the teamwork we had as a whole group. We have Operation Motorsport on board. They’re volunteering their time to come and work on these race cars. We really just try to make it go as fast as we can together. That’s probably the most memorable thing. Having my wife and my dad working alongside me the whole time is incredible. CrowdStrike Racing and AWS being able to put the car on the top of the podium for the last race of the season is great. I knew coming into the race that the odds of us winning the championship were pretty low. All I could do was try to win and the rest wasn’t up to me. I’m still happy with the season results. We’ll see what we can learn from this season.

Flying Lizard Motorsports Leaves Mark on Indianapolis Motor Speedway

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., (October 19, 2021) – Sportscar racing team Flying Lizards Motorsports left another mark on both Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and GT America powered by AWS this weekend by adding another podium to their achievements.

Andy Wilzoch, in the No. 460 Porsche 911 GT3 R, crossed the finish line on Saturday fifth overall and Memo Gidley, in the No. 101 TKO Motorsports Bentley Continental GT3, graced the second step of the podium on Sunday. This brings the two-car partial season effort to 12 podiums, six wins, and 13 overall top-five finishes.

“I am really proud of everyone on this team,” said Darren Law. “It isn’t easy to jump into a race series halfway through the season, but our program earned wins and multiple podiums finishes in all of the races we entered with both Andy and Memo. It has been a great year for Flying Lizard and a great start to our relationship with TKO Motorsports. I am looking forward to the 2022 season.”

GT America Race One
Strategy for Thursday qualifying to run fast laps at the end of the session was thwarted after a competitor laid oil down on the already damp track. With less than desired results, the Lizard Porsche went into race one on Friday starting from fifth overall. After a full-course caution, Wilzoch dropped one position to Jason Harward in the No. 88 Lamborghini. The two continued to gain ground throughout the race and each respectively gained one position, earning Wilzoch a top-five overall finish.

In pre-grid with Gidley set to start race one from second place, there was a tire pressure concern that caused him to stop at the pit box as the field started the out lap. This stop induced a penalty for the Bentley that required the green flag to be taken from the back. Charging through the field, Gidley picked up 12 positions before a full course yellow afflicted the end of the first lap. On a strong restart, he continued through the field reaching fourth overall position after a battle with Kyle Washington in the No. 32 Porsche. Coming into the last third of the race, a mechanical issue brought Gidley back into the pit for a quick repair. With fifteen minutes remaining in the race, he once again attacked the field and finished in eighth overall.

GT America Race Two
The grid for race two was based on race one lap times, and Wilzoch took the start on the outside in sixth position. The front of the field quickly spread out, allowing the race leaders to focus on speed. Navigating through the back of the GT America competitors and numerous incidents, Wilzoch took advantage of the cool dry track, consistently running his fastest laps of the IMS event. Maintaining position, he finished Saturday in sixth overall.

Though plagued with challenges in race one on Friday, Gidley’s hard charges delivered him another position two start at IMS. The Bentley stayed the course and steadily spliced through out-of-class traffic lapping the back of the pack. Keeping Charlie Luck in the No. 45 Porsche between himself and SRO3 competitor, Kyle Washington in the No. 32 Porsche, Gidley claimed another second step on the podium.

I wish we could have ended the year on the podium at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but I’m pleased with how the weekend went. We ran some good laps out there and were able to get plenty of track time to race against the competition. I’d like to thank everyone at Flying Lizard for all their hard work that went into making this season such a success.

What a great experience to get out and race three SRO GT America Races in the TKO Motorsports Bentley Continental GT3! I had so much fun racing and working with the TKO Motorsports team, driving a one-of-a-kind Bentley beast, against some awesome competitors, and one hell of a sponsor TKO and Dave Traitel who is inspiring because he wants people to enjoy life now! And then to be back at Indy on part of the track I have had some awesome and some very scary moments driving on back in my Indy days! All of this made it feel great to finish second here in the TKO Motorsports Bentley and stand on the podium!

Driver reactions following the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol: Funny Car

Alexis DeJoria was finally able to snap a four-year winless streak Sunday afternoon and nearly had a picture-perfect weekend that started on Saturday.

Despite not having the best qualifying efforts in the first and second rounds, (seventh and eighth), the Bandero Premium Tequila ROKiT Toyota Camry driver picked it up in Q3 and earned her first No.1 qualifier since 2016.

On race day, the Los Angeles, California native went all four rounds eliminating Paul Lee, a solo run in the second round, a semi-final victory against Robert Hight and eventually winning against J.R. Todd.

Let’s take a look at where the other Funny Car drivers finished and what they had to say afterward.

  1. Alexis DeJoria (Finished First) – “It’s a huge weight taken off our shoulders,” said DeJoria. “We were number one qualifier and that was the first step. Getting that elusive number one after getting a ton of number twos, that was amazing. Then to get the Wally at the same race is insane. Whatever happens after this, I just hope for the best, but we’re good because we got a Wally. This is a huge confidence builder for me and our whole team. We knew we could do this, it’s just a matter of time. I would say it’s one of the biggest because, as a part-team owner, definitely. Coming back after taking the two years off and getting to work with my mentor, old teammate and friend in Del Worsham. I look up to him and I learned everything I know from Del. To be able to do this with him again and do something we couldn’t do at Kalitta when he ended up driving the other car. But we always wanted to do this again and we were able to make it happen.
  2. J.R. Todd (Finished second, sits third in points, -83) – Todd qualified 12th and was runner-up to DeJoria and knocked out, then Funny Car Championship points leader, Matt Hagan, in the first round. He won over legend John Force in the quarterfinals and once again knocked out new points leader, Ron Capps, in the semis. Todd fell to DeJoria after going 3.929 seconds and 326.32 mph. “We were in a little better position in 2018,” said Todd. “Going into the Countdown this year I knew that we had a good enough car and team to contend for a championship. We have had some hiccups along the way, but we are still in the hunt. We have to keep our heads up and keep fighting.”
  3. Robert Hight (Finished third, qualified fifth, fell to DeJoria in the semis, sits seventh in the points -153 behind first) – “We qualified well this weekend. We put up some good runs, thought we had a competitive Chevy. We got outrun today, wish things were different. But we’re still out here to win. There are two races left in the season and we’ll be out there just like everyone else looking for wins.”
  4. Ron Capps (Finished fourth, took over the points lead and leads by one point over teammate Hagan. He fell to J.R. Todd in the semis and was later disqualified due to hitting the cylinder blocks. Capps had the fastest speed of 329.83 mph) – “This is an all-out battle. We talk about the Countdown to the Championship and talk about how much tighter it seems this year. A lot of press people and media were saying it’s just Matt Hagan and me still in the hunt, and I’m quick to caution everyone because there are so many other cars who can step up and run great and we’ve seen that today with J.R. Todd and that DHL team and Alexis DeJoria. J.R. beat Matt first round and knocked us out in the semis. By no means, especially with Pomona (Calif.) being points-and-a-half, is this thing over. We wanted to grab more points while we were here at Bristol this weekend. The good thing is, we lead the points going into Vegas. It’s almost even. We’re having so much fun and we still have such a great NAPA hot rod and we showed that with qualifying second and making three solid, consistent laps. I’m excited about going to Vegas.”
  5. Cruz Pedregon – (Finished fifth, sits fifth and is tied with John Force in the points standings, fell to Ron Capps in the quarterfinals.) – “A second round appearance for the Snap-on Tools Nitro Funny Car team today at Bristol Dragway. Cruz and team were able to take down Dave Richards in the first round with a 3.96, but ended up falling to Ron Capps in an extremely close race (3.916 to 3.920) and the next round. The championship points have tightened up with two events left. We will head back to Indianapolis tomorrow and start getting our parts and pieces finalized for the final two events of the NHRA season.” – Credit to Cruz Pedregon’s Facebook Page
  6. John Force – (Finished sixth, tied with Pedregon in the points standings -101 back, fell to J.R. Todd in the quarterfinals) – “Not what we were looking for today. Bit of a rough go through the whole weekend. We’re still in the hunt though. Two races left, points and a half in Pomona. We’ll be good. Still have some fight in us.”
  7. Bob Tasca III – (Finished seventh, qualified 11th, fell to Robert Hight in the quarterfinal, sits sixth in the standings -147) He got the first round victory over Tim Wilkerson.
  8. Matt Hagan – (Entered the race as the points leader, fell in the first round to J.R. Todd and now trails teammate Capps by one point) – “It’s a tough one but J.R. Todd and that team, they did their homework and outran us and he left on us. That’s drag racing. I hate to lose and I’m trying to put a smile on right now, but it burns you up inside. We’ve got to go to these last two races and really make them count. That’s why we race them on Sunday because you never know what’s going to happen. I’ve got all of the confidence in (crew chief) Dickie Venables, and we’ll regroup and give it all we’ve got in Vegas.”
  9. Dave Richards (Finished ninth after qualifying ninth and fell to Cruz Pedregon in the first round) Richard’s ET was 4.023 seconds and 311.63 mph to Pedregon’s 3.964 seconds and 294.11 mph. Pedregon is now 3-0 against Richards.
  10. Tim Wilkerson – (Provisionally held the No. 1 qualifier after Friday night’s qualifying run and ended up fourth after Q3 to face Bob Tasca in the first round. Sits ninth in the standings, -241 back) Lost to Tasca in a losing effort with a 6.522 seconds and 103.46 mph.) – “We made some adjustments based on what happened yesterday and they didn’t work at all,” said Wilkerson, in his crew chief lounge in the pits. “We made some changes on Saturday and didn’t get the results we wanted so I tried something else and that didn’t work either which is very frustrating. I am going through the run now and hopefully we can figure it out. I have some time before Las Vegas, but we just missed it today.”
  11. Cory Lee – (Finished 11th after a first round loss to Robert Hight by going up in smoke in the left lane allowing Hight to power to victory).
  12. Blake Alexander – (Qualified 13th and faced Ron Capps in the first round. Also fell to Capps in the first round in a losing effort by smoking the tires)
  13. Paul Lee – (Lee faced eventual winner DeJoria in the first round after qualifying 14th with a time of 6.006 seconds and 112.69 mph. Lee had a slight advantage over DeJoria by having one victory heading into their Round 1 match up. He was also off the starting line first, but eventually had holes coming out of his Funny Car which cost him the race.)

14. Jim Campbell – (Was ninth after qualifying and fell to John Force in the first round. He now trails Force 6-0 in first-round matchups).

Betting on NASCAR

With millions of fans all over the world, it’s not too surprising that people love betting on NASCAR. In this article, we’re going to take a look at five of the most common bets for this sport and explain a bit about each one. Once you understand the various bets, you’ll be able to place your favorites and hope that you come out on top!

Outright Winner

An outright winner bet might be one of the most popular in the world of NASCAR and it’s the easiest to understand. Simply put, you’ll be placing a bet on the driver you think will win the entire race. You can place multiple bets on different drivers to try and increase your chances of winning. If the driver you bet on has a lower chance of winning and actually comes out on top, you’ll have a much bigger payout than you would if you bet and win on a driver that has higher odds. Since it’s so simple, it’s great for beginners and could lead to a decent payout. You should be able to find this bet regardless of which sport betting site you’re using.

Head-to-Head

With head-to-head betting, you’ll basically be placing your bet on one of two drivers that are already matched up by an online bookmaker. Different websites will have multiple sets of drivers and you’ll want to bet on which one will cross the finish line first. This is a great option for those that know a lot about different drivers, especially how well they’ve been doing. Since it’s relatively straightforward, it’s also a good option for those that are new to the betting world and don’t have a whole lot of knowledge of NASCAR.

Proposition Betting

If you aren’t really concerned with betting on the actual drivers, then a proposition bet might be your best bet. Instead of betting on who will win, you’ll be able to place bets on things like the number of cautions there will be or how many times the lead positions will change. Not only will different betting sites have different prop bets, but the bigger events will have a lot more options than the smaller ones.

Fastest Lap

Many people also like to bet on the fastest lap because it’s easy to understand and it’s a great option for pretty much everyone. Basically, you’ll place a bet on who you think will have the fastest lap. While you don’t need to have any knowledge of the drivers or vehicles, it can help increase your chances of winning. While you could win more by betting on an underdog that comes out on top, this type of bet can have great payouts regardless of who you bet on.

Podium Finisher

The final type of NASCAR bet that has a high amount of popularity is podium finisher betting. This one can be difficult to win, but you can get a large payout if everything falls correctly. With this bet, it doesn’t matter whether your driver comes in first, second, or third place because you’ll win as long as they come in one of those places. If your driver happens to finish in first, then you’ll have a fantastic payout, but you’ll win as long as they place in one of the top three positions.
