NASCAR travels to Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the Playoffs continue after an exciting weekend at Bristol where four drivers in the Cup Series were eliminated from championship contention.

It will be the first race in the Cup Series Round of 12.

The Xfinity Series will begin its Playoffs at Las Vegas as 12 drivers compete for the title. The post-season title contenders include AJ Allmendinger, the Xfinity Series Regular Season Champion, Austin Cindric, Justin Allgaier, Justin Haley, Jeb Burton, Daniel Hemric, Harrison Burton, Myatt Snider, Jeremy Clements, Riley Herbst, Noah Gragson and Brandon Jones.

Friday night, the Camping World Truck Series will begin its Round of 8. John Hunter Nemechek leads the way with 3050 points followed by Sheldon Creed, Ben Rhodes, Zane Smith, Chandler Smith, Matt Crafton, Carson Hocevar and Stewart Friesen.

There will be no qualifying or practice this weekend and starting lineups will be determined by the metrics formula established by NASCAR.

Team Chevy heads to Long Beach with eyes on the prize
Pato O’Ward and Josef Newgarden take aim at driver championship in season finale; Scott McLaughlin eyes Rookie-of-the-Year title

DETROIT (Sept. 23, 2021) – Pato O’Ward’s path to clinching the Astor Cup has become more challenging. But like any true competitor, the second-year NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver thrives on challenges.

The driver of the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet enters the 85-lap championship-deciding race Sunday, Sept. 26, on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit in Long Beach, California, second in the standings. Scoring his third win of the 16-race season is a necessity to leave Southern California with the title.

“We are still alive in the championship, and a lot of things can fall our way,” said O’Ward, who enters the season finale 35 points out of first. “I’m going for the win in Long Beach, whatever it takes. I think our street course package is probably one of our stronger packages in terms of road courses, street courses, ovals, short ovals. I think I’m pretty handy around a street course, so hopefully I can pull off something good.”

O’Ward has one NTT INDYCAR SERIES start on the technical street circuit, qualifying ninth and placing 12th in 2019. The event was not contested in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re here as underdogs,” O’Ward added. “It’s the first time we truly challenged for a championship of this magnitude, with this amount of competitiveness. I think it’s been a fantastic year. I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. Really proud of how we’ve grown. But we’re not there yet. We need to keep pushing and we need to keep improving.”

Two 45-minute practice sessions on the precede knockout qualifications Saturday, Sept. 25. The race will be the 165th for Chevrolet since it returned to INDYCAR manufacturer competition in 2012. The Bowtie Brand has four victories on the Long Beach course in that span and seven in a row from 1987-93.

“Chevrolet enters the final race of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season with the same objective and resolve it entered 2021 with — to provide the best support possible to our teams and drivers and see a race car with the Bowtie take the checkered flag,” Chevrolet INDYCAR program manager Rob Buckner said. “It’s been a challenging season in many regards for everybody but rewarding, too.

“We’re looking forward to watching the one of Chevy’s newest talents Pato O’Ward tackle the Long Beach street circuit in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet and Josef Newgarden wheel his No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet as they both charge for the win and hopefully either Pato’s first or Josef’s third championship.”

Two-time NTT INDCYAR SERIES champion Newgarden, who was runner-up in the 2019 race at Long Beach, is 45 points behind front-running Alex Palou and mathematically in contention for the title.

“I’m so proud of the No. 2 car team and everyone with Chevy and Hitachi — just a little short,” said Newgarden, who advanced 10 positions to finish seventh at Laguna Seca. “Little bit tough, but we’ll go to Long Beach and try to get another win before the offseason.”

McLaughlin seeks to secure rookie of year title
Scott McLaughlin will aim to wrap up the INDYCAR Rookie of the Year award in the No. 3 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet. With five top-10 finishes through the 15 races, including runner-up at Texas Motor Speedway in his oval debut, the three-time Australian V8 Supercars champion is a respectable 13th in the standings.

Buckner continued: “Scott has made a difficult transition with incredible determination. He has challenged himself all season. It will be an exciting to see his hard work rewarded.”

Spectators can learn more about Chevrolet vehicles at the Chevrolet Motorsports Display in the Long Beach Expo Center throughout the weekend. Display vehicles include the No. 16 Paretta Autosport Chevrolet NTT INDYCAR SERIES car that raced in the 2021 Indianapolis 500, a 2022 Corvette Stingray convertible, a 2021 Camaro 1LE and a 2021 Silverado Trail Boss. Chevrolet INDYCAR team owner Beth Paretta will meet fans at the Chevrolet Display on Sunday at 10:00 a. m.

The Round of 12 of the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) Playoffs for four Team Chevy drivers opens Sunday, September 26, with the 267-lap South Point 400 on the 1.5-mile oval of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Chevrolet has won nine of the 27 NCS races held at the Nevada venue, including the past two by Kyle Larson (March 2021) and Kurt Busch (September 2020). Larson, first in the Playoff standings entering the race, will start from the pole in his No. 5 Tarlton and Son Camaro ZL1 1LE.

The diverse three-race set of the second round also includes the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway oval and the Charlotte ROVAL, where the field will be trimmed from 12 drivers to eight in pursuit for the NCS championship title.

CHEVROLET OCCUPIES SEVEN OF 12 NXS PLAYOFF SPOTS
Seven drivers of the Chevrolet Camaro SS – AJ Allmendinger, Justin Allgaier, Noah Gragson, Justin Haley, Jeb Burton, Myatt Snider and Jeremy Clements – qualified for the 12-driver NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) Playoffs that begin Saturday, September 25, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Allmendinger sealed the regular season championship with his fourth victory of the season at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Kaulig Racing driver returns to Las Vegas Motor Speedway looking to become a repeat winner after capturing the NXS victory at Las Vegas in March. Chevrolet, with 12 NXS wins, is heading into the NXS playoff run atop the Manufacturer Standings.

NCWTS ROUND OF EIGHT
Reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) champion Sheldon Creed, Zane Smith and Carson Hocevar advanced to the Round of 8 in their Chevrolet Silverado’s. The reigning NCWTS Champion, Sheldon Creed, had an impressive first round, capturing the victory at two of the three races in the Round of 10. Creed leads the Team Chevy brigade sitting second in the driver standings. The Round of 8 kicks off at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday, September 24, with the Victoria’s Voice Foundation 200 Presented by Westgate Resorts.

TWENTY YEARS AGO – GORDON RECORDS CHEVY’S FIRST
Career Chevrolet driver Jeff Gordon gave the Bowtie Brand its first victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 4, 2001. Gordon led twice, including the final 20 laps of the 267-lap race, after starting 24th. Jimmie Johnson leads Chevrolet and all NCS drivers with four wins at the track, including three in a row in 2005, ’06 and ’07.

CHEVROLET HOLDS LEAD IN MANUFACTURER STANDINGS
Chevrolet remains the leader in the NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer Standings in pursuit of its 40th title. Team Chevy has recorded field highs of 14 victories, 128 top-10 finishes, 3,300 laps led and 26 stage wins through 29 races. BUSCH TO MAKE 750TH START ON HOME TRACK
Las Vegas native Kurt Busch, driving the No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Camaro ZL1 1LE, will make his 750th NASCAR Cup Series start on his home track. In his 22nd season, the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion is the longest-tenured active driver in terms of career starts. He has 33 wins and 327 top-10 finishes. Busch, 43, qualified for the Playoffs this season for the 15th time in the 18 years of the postseason.

“Daniel’s Amigos was just an idea. I always wanted to do something special for the Latinos, and was just trying to come up with ways to bring this community to the race track and give them a special, cool experience.

“After several conversations with Coca-Cola and NASCAR, we were able to make it happen in 2019 at Auto Club Speedway in California. The program just grew from there until COVID made us take a break. It has been a while since we have done it, but we are back Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
“It has taken a lot of work by Coca-Cola and NASCAR to make this happen, but I am super excited about it.”

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT ON SUNDAY WITH DANIEL’S AMIGOS?
“We are going to have a few hundred people in the infield of the race track in an open air space where they can have a good time. I am going to be there for 45 minutes, taking pictures, questions and answers and lots of fun. I want them to get to know me better and I want to get to know them. I want to show them how cool NASCAR really is.”

WHY IS THIS PROGRAM IMPORTANT?
“One of the great things I love about our sport is that it is very family oriented. Every time I get the opportunity to do one of these Daniel’s Amigos events, I want to make them feel like they are at home so they will come back and support us every week at the track.”

“Winning Sunday would be amazing. I would invite all 200 Daniel’s Amigos to victory lane to help us celebrate.”

Brad Keselowski, driver of the No. 2 Autotrader Ford Mustang, is one of four Ford drivers still alive in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, which continues this weekend with the first race in the Round of 12. Keselowski spoke about what lies ahead as part of a NASCAR Zoom call this afternoon.

BRAD KESELOWSKI, No. 2 Autotrader Ford Mustang — HOW ARE YOU SET FOR SPONSORSHIP NEXT SEASON AT ROUSH? “We’re having amazing conversations. The market is incredibly strong — in kind of the decision phase on some really great partners that are new to the sport, so I am thrilled with where we’re at. I don’t have anything to announce today, obviously. I think I would look for us to make one consolidated announcement with respect to our sponsors and our brand initiatives and team lineup all at one time after the season is over, so I’m really excited about it. I think conceptually there’s been a lot of energy around the sport on the partner side and we’re riding a wave of momentum. I’m sorry I can’t give any specifics, but as a general topic things are looking pretty good. I wouldn’t say we have everything done yet by any means today, but a lot of good movement.”

HOW WILL THE NEW PACKAGE IMPACT HOW THE CARS RACE AT TALLADEGA, IF AT ALL? “That’s a good question. I think there’s some thoughts that we’ll see some tandem racing. I’m not totally caught up on that yet. Overall, I thought the racing was pretty good at Daytona. It was a little bit less of a crashfest for most of the race than most people thought it would be, so that’s good. Ultimately, I don’t expect a big difference though.”

HOW IS YOUR CONFIDENCE LEVEL KNOWING VEGAS HAS BEEN A GOOD TRACK FOR YOU IN THE PAST? “Las Vegas has been incredible for us. We had a great run going there last fall and got shuffled on a restart and didn’t get that top 10, but, other than that, we’ve been a solid contender year in and year out. I think we finished second there in the spring and seem to be able to get it done there, so hoping for big things. Obviously, we need a strong performance for this round and the races in it. This is a tough round and I think we’ll have a great shot at doing just that.”

WHAT DO YOU TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ROGER AND TEAM PENSKE? “It’s been a hell of a ride. It’s made me a better race car driver and a better person, and I’m incredibly proud of that. I’m incredibly proud of the things we’ve done, the people we’ve met, the experiences that have come with it. Knowing and working with Roger Penske has, like I said, made me a better person in a lot of ways and a lot of the people around there are just tremendous people as well at Team Penske. I’m certainly gonna miss working with a lot of them and it’s bittersweet. Obviously, I’m very much looking forward to new opportunities that are in front of me, otherwise I wouldn’t have left, but, on the other side, just really proud of what we’ve done together and sad to see that piece come to an end.”

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PEOPLE WHO THINK THE HIGH DOWNFORCE PACKAGE PUTS LESS EMPHASIS ON DRIVER SKILL AND MORE ON RANDOM LUCK? “I don’t know that random luck is the right word for it, but there’s less car control and the racing is a little more procedural based undoubtedly, so I guess there’s always transitions. These cars from 10 years ago were just freaking animals. Man, were they hard to drive. A number of drivers loved that. That said, you could still get a car that was faster and be a lesser driver and win the race. There’s no doubt about that, so I struggle to say that talent doesn’t still matter it’s just the racing continues to get more and more procedural based, like I said, and that still requires some talent.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS AND WHAT’S YOUR EVALUATION OF THE TEAM GOING INTO THIS NEXT ROUND? “I’m proud of the results we had at Bristol. It’s the best run we’ve had in roughly a month, which was sorely needed. If we can show that kind of speed, we have the opportunity to go deep in the playoffs and have a shot at the championship. I can’t answer whether that’s gonna be the case over the next few weeks. I don’t really control enough of those cards. Most of those are car based, but I can say that my pit crew is performing at a super high level, one of the strongest teams I’ve ever had on pit road. If we have the speed and the execution on the driver side to match the pit crew, we can go and win the championship. Right now, the speed has been our weakness to be quite frank, and that kind of stuff comes and goes and that’s why I hesitate to put expectations on anything because obviously as a driver I have some control of the speed quotient, but the reality is when you get to the Cup level most of the drivers are very close with respect to the ability of how fast they can make a car go on its own accord. Ultimately, we’ll see what we’ve got.”

HOW MUCH INTERACTION DO YOU HAVE WITH THE ROUSH GROUP ON A WEEKLY BASIS, ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU’RE STILL RACING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH PENSKE? “The interesting thing about our sport is we’re one of the few sports, somebody was telling me this the other day that cycling is this way, but we’re one of the few sports where you can be contracted with another team while competing with the team you’re with, which certainly is an interesting situation. You think of football, hockey, baseball, basketball, you’re either with one team or you’re not. Motorsports is certainly different in that way. Contractually, I have to honor my contract, which means non-competes and all of those kinds of things, so obviously I can’t be in the building and doing things for next year. I hear the rumblings of the test sessions and all that kind of stuff and certainly very curious as to how all that’s going, but my involvement is prohibited until the season is over.”

WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THE CARS BEING DIFFERENT 10 YEARS AGO, WHAT DOES THIS GENERATION HAVE TO DO DIFFERENTLY THAN BACK THEN? “I remember going to Martinsville my first year or two in Cup and you’d come up off the corner and you would spin the rear tires, you’d have brand new tires and you would spin the rear tires for 100-feet on new tires, and at the end of the run, I mean, the whole straightaway you would spin the rear tires. You might not ever get flat foot and now the last race I ran at Martinsville I came up off the corner and just flat-footed it for thirty-some laps like I was driving a street car or something. That’s a big difference because your ability to really feel the feedback of the car and the rear tires and really modulate the gas pedal is really an important skill that you used to have to have, but now you don’t. That said, there are other skills you have to have now that you didn’t have to have back then. The choose lane and all those things and knowing where to be and knowing how to fill the gaps on restarts, that was not the case back then. I mean, shoot, the whole Texas thing — the debacle I had with, was it Jeff Gordon there? Today, that’s like every week. There’s a gap, you fill it. Every restart. Where back then it’s like, geez, you even tried to make a move like that and everybody lost their marbles. Things have changed for sure. You could argue for the better. You could argue for the worse, but they’re different and that’s life and that’s really every sport. There are parts of me that really miss going to a track like Texas and being 10 laps in and spinning the rear tires at 185 miles an hour. That was pretty darn cool. I’m not gonna lie, but there are other days I don’t miss. I don’t miss going to Michigan and hauling her off at 9 a.m. practice at 220 miles an hour thinking, ‘Man, I hope I don’t blow a tire. I’m gonna end up in the grandstands.’ So there are tradeoffs to everything.”

IS THERE A WAY TO HAVE ANY HOPE OF THE SPEED THING GETTING BETTER THIS WEEKEND, OR DO YOU JUST GO OUT THERE AND POSITION YOURSELF AND FIGURE IT OUT THAT WAY? “If we knew the knobs that well to be able to predict it, we would turn them every week, so I can’t say honestly. I really don’t know what I’m gonna have this weekend. If we went there and we ran top five all week and snuck out a race win, I wouldn’t be shocked. If we went to Vegas and ran 10th to 15th all week and finished in that range, I wouldn’t be shocked. I don’t know what to expect with respect to our performance.”

IS THAT UNSETTLING OR IS THAT JUST THE WORLD WE LIVE IN AND YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT? “I think it’s part of the world we live in, that there are a lot of variables we can’t control and you get in the car and figure out what you’ve got and then you do the most you can with it to try to put yourself in a great position. I’m incredibly proud of the round that we had. We didn’t win a race. We didn’t contend to win a race in that first round, but we went to Darlington with a 15th-place car and put together a solid top-10 finish. We went to Richmond with a 15th to 20th-place car unfortunately, and put together a solid finish, got some stage points out of it and ended up 13th. And we went to Bristol with probably the best car we’ve had, probably a top-five car and scored the third-most points and finished sixth. In a lot of ways, the media and the fans look at the race winner as the guy that ran the best race. To me, I always look at the field and say, ‘Who did the best with the car they had?’ And I feel like we’re out-finishing our speed right now by a good bit and that’s a combination of certainly the moves I’m making on the racetrack and the moves that we make on pit road and with respect to pit strategy and the pit crew themselves, so I’m really proud of that. We knocked a few guys out of the first round that, quite frankly, were considerably faster than us, so that bodes well for us. If we can put the speed with all the other pieces we have, we’re a very dangerous team.”

THERE’S A WAVE OF FORMER DRIVERS NOW BECOMING CAR OWNERS. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS? “I think there’s a confluence of factors. The Next Gen car certainly had an effect — the visibility toward it, super important. I think there’s other quotients that lie in there too with respect to, like you said, generations and ways things have developed. Where are we at? Denny Hamlin, myself and who else? I guess Kyle has the truck team, but doesn’t have a Cup deal, but I would suspect there would be one or two others that join and do this over the next couple of years, which is great. The charter was a big piece of this, no doubt. It probably doesn’t get enough credit. I hear a lot of people bad mouth the charters. Honestly, there are parts I like and dislike about it, don’t get me wrong, but I think as a whole it’s been good for the sport. That said, I struggle to say there’s one factor. I’d say there’s a confluence of factors.”

It sounds like range days are a good stress relief for him in addition to his hunting trips and what he does with Veterans. We focus a lot on performance in our industry so it was great to talk about those similarities as well. Haas retains Schumacher, Mazepin for 2022 F1 season

Uralkali Haas F1 Team confirmed that Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will remain with the organization for the 2022 Formula One season.

Haas, which is in its sixth season in F1 competition and first under the Uralkali title sponsorship, is ranked in 10th place in the constructors’ standings through the first 14 Grand Prix races of 2021 as the team has yet to record its first points of this season. The team is also embarking in its first season featuring an entirely new driver lineup with Schumacher and Mazepin.

“We knew we wanted continuity behind the wheel in 2022 and I’m happy to confirm exactly that with Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin competing for Uralkali Haas F1 Team next year,” Guenther Steiner, Haas’ Team Principal, said. “[The year] 2021 has afforded both drivers the opportunity to learn Formula 1 – and as rookies – they’ve done a lot of that this year.”

Despite a difficult 2021 Formula One season, Haas has set its focus for the 2022 season that will feature new aerodynamic regulations as the team aims to regain its competitiveness.

“It’s been a tough season for sure with the package we’ve had, but at the same time [Schumacher and Mazepin] both embraced the challenge and worked closely with the team to learn our processes and adapt to the rigors of a Formula 1 campaign and all that brings – both internally and externally,” Steiner added. “Now as we look ahead to the 2022 season, we’re confident we can move forward as a team and give Mick and Nikita a competitive race package to make the next step in their Formula 1 careers.”

Schumacher, the 2020 Formula 2 champion and the son of seven-time F1 champion, Michael Schumacher, is currently ranked in 19th place in the drivers’ standings while embarking in his first full season in F1 competition. His best result in F1 to date is 12th place at the Hungarian Grand Prix in early August.

“By being part of the Formula 1 field, I am living my dream,” Schumacher said. “The first year together with Haas F1 is very exciting and instructive, and I’m sure I can bring all the experience I’ve gained into the coming year. New technical regulations, the impressive ambition of the entire Haas F1 team and the support of Ferrari – of course I believe this will bring us closer to the field in the 2022 season and we will be able to fight for points. I’m looking forward to being part of a team that is getting stronger, and I’ll do everything I can from my side to move us forward. Finally, I would like to thank the Ferrari Driver Academy for the trust they continue to give me and the support they have shown me over the years.”

Mazepin, who finished in fifth place in last year’s F2 standings with two victories and is the son of Dmitry Mazepin, chairman and core shareholder of the Uralchem Integrated Chemicals Company, including the title sponsor for Haas, is also competing in his first full season in F1 competition. His best result to date is 14th place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in early June and he is ranked in 21st place in the drivers’ standings.

“I’m very excited for next year, the new car and simply just to get the opportunity with Haas F1 Team and grow together with them,” Mazepin said. “I think we will come out strong next year.”

Haas’ full driver lineup for 2022 comes a week after the Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team confirmed that Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll will serve as the team’s competitors for the upcoming season. That all but leaves one of the 20 F1 seats for 2022 that is yet to be filled, which is at Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen. Valtteri Bottas, who currently competes with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, is set to join the organization next season to replace the retiring Kimi Räikkönen while Alfa Romeo’s second competitor, Antonio Giovinazzi, has yet to announce his plans for 2022.

With the Haas F1 Team set for 2022, the team is also set to compete in the upcoming Grand Prix event at Sochi Autodrom in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, on September 26.

Kurt Busch Adds to Career Accomplishments with 750th NASCAR Cup Series Start in Las Vegas

Milestone Start at Home Track

CONCORD, NC (Sept. 22, 2021) – NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) veteran competitor Kurt Busch will make career start No. 750 this Sunday Sept. 26 at his hometown track, Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS). Busch is also the defending race winner of this weekend’s South Point 400 at LVMS.

The Las Vegas-native assumed sole possession of 12th on the all-time NCS career starts list last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway with career start 749, surpassing Tennessee-native Sterling Marlin, who had 748 NCS career starts to his credit.

Busch’s versatile driving talent has helped him to score poles and race victories on every type of track on which the NCS competes (superspeedway, intermediate, short-track and road course). The 43-year-old driver has also won at least one race in 18 of his 22 years of NCS competition, including at least one win in the last eight consecutive seasons.
