● The Bass Pro Shops Night Race marks the third race of the 10-race NASCAR Playoffs. When the checkered flag drops, four of the 16 playoff drivers will be eliminated from championship contention. Harvick comes into Bristol ranked sixth, 25 points above the cutline to advance to the Round of 12. A win would punch Harvick’s ticket to the Round of 12, but even without a win, Harvick is in good shape. If he ends the race with a 31-point margin over the 13th-place driver, he will advance to the Round of 12. Harvick has advanced out of the Round of 16 in all seven of his attempts in the postseason since 2014.
● Harvick is the defending winner of the Bass Pro Shops Night Race. The driver of the No. 4 Subway Delivery Ford Mustang won last year’s race in dominating fashion by leading four times for a race-high 226 laps, including the final 32 tours around the .533-mile oval. Harvick beat Kyle Busch by .310 of a second to take his 58th career NASCAR Cup Series victory, his third at Bristol and his 35th since joining SHR in 2014.
● Harvick’s first NASCAR Cup Series win at Bristol came in April 2005. In his ninth start at the high-banked, half-mile, Harvick beat Elliott Sadler by an impressive 4.652 seconds for his fifth career Cup Series victory. It would be another 23 races before Harvick scored his second Bristol win. In the 2016 Bass Pro Shops Night Race, Harvick beat Ricky Stenhouse Jr., by 1.933 seconds to take his 33rd career Cup Series victory.
● How did Harvick do in his last race at Bristol? It doesn’t matter, because the track was covered in dirt. Harvick finished 15th on March 29 in the first NASCAR Cup Series dirt race since Sept. 30, 1970 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. It was Harvick’s first dirt race since competing in Tony Stewart’s Prelude to the Dream dirt late model event in 2009 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. With 1,138 laps led on Bristol’s concrete and zero laps led when it was covered in dirt, count Harvick among the drivers happy to return to traditional racing at Bristol.
● The Bass Pro Shops Night Race will be Harvick’s 41st career NASCAR Cup Series start on Bristol’s concrete. He and Kurt Busch each have 40 starts at Bristol, the most among active Cup Series drivers. The only driver even close to them is Ryan Newman with 38 starts. In fact, there are only two other active drivers with 30 or more starts at Bristol – Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr., with 30 starts apiece.
● Harvick has proven prolific at Bristol outside of the NASCAR Cup Series. He has made 29 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the track, winning five times and scoring 15 top-fives and 24 top-10s while leading 1,217 laps. Harvick has also made five NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at Bristol, winning once and finishing in the top-10 in his last four starts on the concrete surface.

Does your preparation change between the regular season and the playoffs, or do you keep doing what got you into the playoffs?

“Several years ago, if you were going to compete with the 48 car (seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson) on a week-to-week basis, you had to playoff race every week, and that’s always something Rodney (Childers, crew chief) and myself and the team have prided ourselves on. The preparation is no different. You prepare and do all the same things you do on a weekly basis to be able to compete at a high level. There’s obviously a lot more chatter about playoffs and first-round races and third-round races, and in the end I know those are great stories, but all that stuff is irrelevant to us. We’re week-to-week racers and we’ll prepare the same, win or lose, every week.”

The Bristol Night Race always has an electric vibe to it, but is that vibe heightened with it being a cutoff race to make the Round of 12?

“The vibe at the Bristol Night Race is always over the top. It’s always a great event. You really never know what to expect at the Bristol Night Race. It can go completely smoothly or it can be complete chaos. Usually, it’s somewhere in between those two and you just have an exciting night. Bristol is intense every lap. There’s just a lot happening every single corner to make good lap times at Bristol. There’s always something happening in front of you, so you try and look as far ahead as you can to keep yourself out of trouble. But the best way to keep yourself out of trouble at Bristol is to be on offense and going forward, so hopefully we can do that.”

Bristol is fast and loud. That means entertainment for the fans, but it can pose problems when it comes to communicating with your crew chief. How do you handle that aspect of Bristol?

“Bristol is definitely loud and hard for the teams to hear. One of the hardest things at Bristol is just to see what’s going on. I have crashed at Bristol and gone back to watch it on TV and you’re like, ‘What in the hell were you doing? You just ran into four or five cars that have been sitting there for two seconds.’ But, Bristol is a very demanding racetrack. It’s very hard because things happen so fast, communication is hard. It’s easy to make a mistake or pile into a wreck. It’s easy to wreck somebody or to get into a fight. It’s easy to do a lot of things because there is just so much happening. It’s a tough place to race, to put it all together, and it’s mentally and physically exhausting.”

Bristol marks the second short-track race in as many weeks. When it comes to short-track etiquette – what’s OK and what isn’t in this day and age?

“It depends on how mad you are. I think a lot of that just depends on the situation. When you’re not running well, there’s a lot more that’s OK in your mind because the day’s screwed up anyway and you feel like you want to run into somebody just to take your aggression out on the day. A lot of that just depends on who you’re racing and how that guy’s raced you that day, if you’ve had trouble and you’re trying to get back to the front and it’s late in the race, or at the end of a stage – it’s just different things at different times that are OK. In the end, it’s just like every other race, you’ve got to somehow be able to get to the finish with the best result you can get that day.”

Where did you learn short-track etiquette, and is it still applicable today?

“It’s applicable, and a lot of times there are still a lot of guys who don’t apply it and they wind up getting themselves in trouble – tearing their cars up and putting themselves in a bad spot. I think part of our success is being able to race like that when we need to race like that and understanding how that works. In my book, it’s just being smart. In today’s day and age, a lot of it is just go as hard as you can go and screw the other guy. In the end, there are a lot of guys who think that way, but there are a lot of guys who tear their stuff up, too. So, it’s a fine line, but you have to go on the restarts in today’s world. You have to just throw caution to the wind on the restarts because that’s when most of it happens. Once we get strung out and get to the racing part of it, that’s usually when you have to apply some of that and there is some give-and-take. But on the restarts, I would say all those rules go out the window because of how important the restarts are in today’s world.”

Who were the elder statesmen you learned from when you started racing in the NASCAR Cup Series?

“A lot of that I would credit to Richard Childress just because of the fact he put so much emphasis on finishing races. I think most of that comes from the RCR mentality when I started of you have to finish the race, no matter what the cost or what you have to do, you have to finish the race.”

One-Two Punch

Roush Fenway’s most recent victory at Bristol came after sweeping the top two positions in the March 2014 event with Carl Edwards taking the victory and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. coming home in second. Edwards led the final 78 laps of the event to earn the victory.

Roush Fenway’s history at Bristol has been one of hot streaks, including trips to victory lane in nine of the last 19 seasons at the famed short track. Roush Fenway swept the track in 2003 and put a NCS car in victory lane at least once in every season from 2002-2008.

Colby Howard returns to CR7 Motorsports at Bristol Motor Speedway

BRISTOL, Tenn: CR7 Motorsports confirmed today that Simpsonville, S.C. native Colby Howard will return to the team and pilot the No. 9 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet in Thursday night’s UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Howard will make his second consecutive start on the heels of an impressive top-15 finish in the series most recent race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway on Sept. 5.

Starting 29th at Darlington, Howard made impressive progress during the In It To Win It 200 at Darlington under the leadership of crew chief Doug George.

Despite a mid-race spin, Howard was able to recover and deliver a 13th place finish, a career-best in Truck Series competition.

“I am looking forward to being back with CR7 Motorsports at Bristol,” said Howard. “We had a great run at Darlington so hopefully we can repeat that and maybe even get a top-10. Bristol is another favorite of mine so it should be a great time.”

Last week, Howard was announced as a new driver of a second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team for McAnally-Hilgemann Racing next season. The addition of Thursday night’s Truck Series will continue to allow the 19-year-old to add priceless laps under his belt as he prepares for a hopeful championship effort in 2022.

“These laps in a truck are critical for me,” added Howard. “Everyone at CR7 Motorsports really made me feel welcomed at Darlington and while this race wasn’t initially on my schedule, we talked and made it happened. No doubt the laps on Thursday night will help me find a rhythm in a truck and should provide a huge benefit for next season for a variety of reasons.”

CR7 Motorsports mainstay driver Codie Rohrbaugh was supposed to pilot the No. 9 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet Silverado at Bristol, but in an effort to continue to strengthen the team’s overall program, he willing passed the torch to Howard.

“I’m happy to have Colby back this weekend at Bristol,” offered Rohrbaugh. “I love racing at Bristol, it is one of my favorite tracks on the schedule but for the long-term plan of CR7 Motorsports, this makes perfect sense for us.

“I have no doubt that Colby will have the opportunity to repeat or better his Darlington performance and put our team in a good spot heading to Las Vegas. I’ll be back in the truck at Talladega and look forward to that opportunity.”

While keeping his expectations realistic for his second Truck Series start of the season on Thursday night, Howard does have goals.

“My main goal is just to be smooth and be there at the end,” he said.

“I would love to see another top-15 for these CR7 Motorsports guys or even a top-10 would feel like a win. But, if we can have a productive day and make some gains during the race and see the checkered flag, I think everyone will be satisfied.”

Based on metrics set by NASCAR without practice or qualifying, Howard will line up 20th for the 200-lap race.

CR7 Motorsports holds 24th in the championship owner standings participating in 15 of the 17 races this season.

CR7 Motorsports has 41 NCWTS starts to their credit with a career-best finish of third at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway (February 2020). Additionally, the team owns six other top-10 finishes including two this season at Circuit of the Americas (fourth | Grant Enfinger) in May 2021 and Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway (seventh | Grant Enfinger) in March 2021. An 11th place qualifying effort at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (Oct. 2019) is the team’s best time trials effort to date.

DUDE Wipes Back with Alfredo at Bristol Motor Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (September 15, 2021) – The DUDE Wipes Ford Mustang returns to the track this Saturday night at the Bristol Motor Speedway with Anthony Alfredo. Alfredo will make his first start in the famous Bristol “night race.”

Although it will be Alfredo’s first 500-lap race at Bristol, the young driver has both experience and success at the track. He has a top-10 finish in both late model and the NASCAR Xfinity Series in his racing career.

“I love racing at Bristol,” said Alfredo. “There is no place like it and I’m really excited for my first night race in the Cup Series at the track. I love the DUDE Wipes Ford Mustang and it’s cool they are on the car for this race. This is a special race for me in my career because it’s one of the bigger races on the schedule.”

Alfredo comes into Saturday night’s race with finishes of 24th and 26th, respectively, in his last two races. But, more importantly, Alfredo feels those results have shown momentum.

“We are running much better now than a month ago,” commented Alfredo. “We are just a few little things away from getting back into the top-20 and I think everyone can feel that on our team. Momentum is funny. You may not see the result, but you can see it on how we race on the track. We are running better now and we want to keep it up.”

Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series race begins at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

Clay Greenfield to drive for Spencer Davis Motorsports at Bristol Motor Speedway

BRISTOL, Tenn: Spencer Davis Motorsports (SDM) confirmed today that Clarksville, Tenn. native Clay Greenfield will drive for the Mooresville, N.C.-based organization in Thursday night’s UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Greenfield will drive the No. 11 Toyota Tundra with primary support from Tennessee-based Greenfield Pavement Coatings.

The 18th race of the Truck Series season will be just the second race of the year for Greenfield who recently participated in the most recent race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway for his family-owned Clay Greenfield Motorsports team. He finished 19th after starting 38th.

“I am excited about the opportunity to drive for Spencer Davis Motorsports at Bristol this week,” said Greenfield. “Like myself, Spencer is trying to build a successful Truck Series organization and a lot of the guys on his team have worked for me through the years, so it’s nice to be reunited with some of them.

“This is a great opportunity for myself to help evaluate Spencer’s program while getting the opportunity to race at one of my favorite race tracks on the circuit, Bristol Motor Speedway.”

Since 2010, Greenfield, 37, has made seven starts in “Thunder Valley” with a best finish of 16th in his track debut in the O’Reilly 200 driving for Rick Ware Racing.

Carrying an average finish of 25.4 at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile”, Greenfield looks to improve that statistic as the series enters the stretch drive of the 2021 season.

“Bristol is one of my favorite tracks and has been since the first time I turned a lap there in a Late Model in 2004,” said Greenfield. “I have had multiple “should have been wins” slip away in the Late Model ranks, so I would love to drive this No. 11 truck up on top of the building in Victory Lane!”

Utilizing his own company to adorn the hood of his No. 11 Toyota Tundra this week, Greenfield spoke about the decision to promote Greenfield Pavement Coatings.

“As a racer, you devote so much of your time trying to sell sponsorship,” he admitted. “When you finally get a meeting with the decision-maker the question always comes up “How will this help my business and what kind of results will I get?”

“There are many easy answers to that question and there are also many non-tangible benefits that are difficult to provide a quantitative answer for. Most companies aren’t going to show you their revenue information before and after sponsorship so you must rely on the feedback they give.

“I’ve often thought if I had hard data showing the increases of leads, sales closed, and revenue of a particular company before and after NASCAR sponsorship it would be so much easier to sell those sponsorships in the future

“With my paving coming, Greenfield Pavement Coatings I have the unique ability to do a case study to help sell sponsorship in the future. We have an advertising budget in place to specifically promote the paving sector of the business, I have access to all the financials, so why not put my money where my mouth is and have Greenfield Pavement Coatings on national television.

“I have the ability to record all the key data, lead increase, sales closed, and ultimately revenue increased. Who knows, I may end up wanting to keep Greenfield Pavement Coatings on the truck for future races.”

Team owner Spencer Davis says Greenfield is a welcome addition to the team.

“Clay will be the fourth driver for Spencer Davis Motorsports this season and I’m excited to have him,” offered Davis. “Between he, Bubba Wallace, Camden Murphy and myself, we are definitely collecting the notes and doing everything we can to make our team better for now and the future.

“Clay is an experienced short track racer with over 1,000 laps turned at Bristol and I think he will do a great job for us and our partners. I look forward to being in the truck next weekend at Las Vegas.”

‘Ally 400’ NASCAR Cup Series race set for Music City’s home for NASCAR

LEBANON, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2021) – NASCAR announced its full 2022 Cup Series schedule earlier today, featuring the “Ally 400” at Nashville Superspeedway on Sunday, June 26, 2022.

“We are thrilled to once again welcome NASCAR’s top talents in 2022 and build upon the excitement here in Middle Tennessee that started this past June,” said Erik Moses, Nashville Superspeedway’s president.

KWIK TRIP BECOMES TITLE SPONSOR FOR NASCAR CUP SERIES RACE AT ROAD AMERICA IN 2022

ELKHART LAKE, Wis., Sept. 15, 2021 – Kwik Trip, a La-Crosse, Wisconsin-based convenience store chain, has switched places with the 2021 title sponsor, Jockey, for the NASCAR Cup Series race at Road America in 2022. Next year’s race will be known as the Kwik Trip 250 presented by Jockey Made in America. AUSTIN, Texas – Race fans will experience another unforgettable weekend of NASCAR in Austin, Texas, when the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS), Xfinity Series (NXS) and Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) return to Circuit of The Americas (COTA), March 25-27, 2022.

NASCAR at COTA will take place during a more temperature-friendly time of the year for central Texas in March of 2022 compared to the mid-May races earlier this year. The action-packed tripleheader will Keep Austin Wheeled with the EchoPark Automotive Texas Grand Prix (NCS), Pit Boss 250 (NXS) and Toyota Tundra 225 (NCWTS).

St. Louis wins another Cup: NASCAR Cup Series coming to World Wide Technology Raceway in 2022

“It’s Cup Time” as St. Louis adds to its reputation as top U.S. sports city

September 15, 2021, St. Louis Region – World Wide Technology Raceway (WWTR) solidified its standing as a premier motorsports venue when NASCAR officials today awarded the 1.25-mile oval in metropolitan St. Louis a highly coveted date on the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

To be officially titled at a later date, the WWTR NASCAR Cup Series race will take place Sunday, June 5, 2022. Adding the prestigious NASCAR Cup Series to WWTR’s portfolio further heightens St. Louis’ status as a motorsports destination and is a significant win for the raceway. It is the only one in the U.S. to now host the premier series for each of the three preeminent racing organizations: NASCAR, INDYCAR and NHRA.
