WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CAMARO ZL1 1LE, Press Conference Highlights Transcript:

DURING THE GOODYEAR TIRE TEST BACK IN MARCH, WE SAW TIRES CORDING AFTER 20-25 LAPS. WHAT EXACTLY CAUSES TIRES TO CORD LIKE WE SAW DURING THE TEST?
“I think just the concrete. We don’t normally run on concrete and concrete is pretty abrasive to tires, especially at like Dover or Bristol. You usually have tire issues there. I feel like that’s just what it is. It seems like it’s a lot better through practice. The track rubbered in pretty quickly. I feel like it’s gotten a lot better. I think the biggest thing for us was just trying to get it to turn. It’s a really flat place and it feels like of like Pocono (Raceway) in that aspect; the straightaways are pretty long. Yeah, it was cool.”

WAS THIS A TRUCK RACE THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR A RIDE BECAUSE YOU HAD NEVER BEEN HERE OR WAS THIS SOMETHING THE TEAM CAME TO YOU?
“Yeah, Rudy (Fugle) and Willie Allen came to me with this opportunity back in March, I think. It wasn’t on my radar. I haven’t run anything other than Cup for a few years. I was kind of nervous, but it worked out and they were willing to have me in their truck and that’s awesome. I’m really appreciative of the opportunity and feel like it’s one that’s going to help me in the Cup Series. But really, it’s just a chance to have fun with my guys. I get a chance to have Josh Graham here, who works on the 24, and meet a lot of the new guys at Rackley and their team. It’s been fun. We started off practice a little bit off, but we got a lot better and obviously got really good there by the end. Just have to keep working on it, but it’s awesome to have the opportunity.”

THEY PUT RESIN DOWN, WHICH THEOREDICALLY ISN’T TRACTION COMPOUND. DID YOU FEEL MORE GRIP UP THERE OR COULD YOU TELL ANY SORT OF DIFFERENCE?
“Yeah, I thought the track rubbered in pretty quickly. I thought the rubber laid down quicker than I’m used to in a practice session, so that was interesting. I was nervous firing off there, just not knowing the truck and seeing that a lot of guys usually have issues with the traction compound. I was kind of nervous there, so I kind of stayed pretty low for the first couple of runs. As I worked into it, it seemed like it was normal grip level. It wasn’t a huge deal. I don’t think we’re going super-fast in the center of the corner, so it’s not like you’re super on-edge getting to the resin compound.”

ON THE CUP SIDE OF THINGS, I WAS ASKING AROUND ABOUT THE CURRENT STREAK THAT HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS HAVE BEEN ON. I HEARD THAT REALLY THE ADVANTAGE THAT YOU GUYS HAVE IS WITH MASTERING THE BODY OF THE CURRENT CUP CAR. WITHOUT GIVING ME TOO MANY TRADE SECRETS, CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY HENDRICK HAS CONTINUED TO DEVELOP THE CURRENT CUP BODY, EVEN THOUGH THIS CURRENT CUP CAR IS GOING TO BE OBSOLETE THIS TIME NEXT YEAR?
“I don’t think it’s really one thing. I think we’ve gone to work on a lot of different areas. It’s taken us two or three years, maybe four, since I’ve been here to kind of get to where we are. So, I don’t think it’s really one thing. Downforce always helps, but a lot of other things help. I feel like we’re just trending in the right direction and I give credit to our sim program; to everything that gets us close because we don’t have practice. So, to show up with the splitter being close, all those things being close, is really tough. So, I don’t think that’s really just downforce – I think it’s really just a lot of hard work from engineers, fabrication guys, everything.”

DO YOU KIND OF FEEL LIKE YOU’RE IN A DEFICIT COMING INTO THE SPORT, IN AN ERA WHERE THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO TESTING? THE SIMULATOR IS REALLY ABOUT ALL YOU’VE HAD TO RELY ON.
“Yeah, it is. I think that’s why opportunities like this are so awesome. I think that’s why chances to run something else is really good for me, like I’m having this weekend. I feel like it’s a great opportunity for me to learn. I do feel like now in the Cup cars, I feel pretty up to speed. I don’t feel like I’m at a deficit by any means. It’s just figuring out the little details of each track that maybe I haven’t had a car at that track to be competitive with to know what I need to feel. We’re getting there though. I think we’ve been to a lot of tracks that I wasn’t competitive before in Cup and now, this year, we were really good. I think Texas (Motor Speedway) is an example of that. I’m excited for the summer months and see what we can do.”

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK IN THE TRUCK SERIES HERE AT NASHVILLE SUPERSPEEDWAY?
“Yeah, it’s awesome. I obviously watch the Truck races every weekend, but you don’t really know how it’s going to drive until you get out there. So, I was really nervous going into the first corner, just to know what it was going to feel like, understand the side force and the feel. We aren’t going as fast as a 1.5-mile track, so I’m sure it would feel a little different there. But it kind of brings you back to a few years ago.”
“The other thing is how much room you have above your head. I’m not used to that either. The engine has changed since I’ve been in the Trucks. At the time, it was just open engines, so that’s a little different too. So, I’m getting used to the shifting and all that. Restarts I think will be a challenge for me, just to get up to speed and remember to shift. I’m going to have to be looking down at my tach and looking up. It’s going to be a challenge.”

Statement from Spire Motorsports

CONCORD, N.C. (June 18, 2021) – The following is a statement from Spire Motorsports co-owners Jeff Dickerson and T.J. Puchyr following today’s announcement that Justin Haley will compete full time in the NASCAR Cup Series with Kaulig Racing in 2022:

“Earlier today, Kaulig Racing announced that it would field a full-time NASCAR Cup Series entry for Justin Haley in 2022. Above all, we’d like to congratulate Justin and Matt Kaulig for their exciting news. Justin is one of the most talented young drivers in the sport. We’re thrilled that he has an opportunity to compete full time for a playoff-caliber team. Matt Kaulig will bring new ownership and new enthusiasm to the NASCAR Cup Series garage.

“NASCAR has created a valuable charter model and we’re grateful to the sanctioning body and all the owners who have come before us. Without team owners like the Wood Brothers, Richard Petty, Rick Hendrick, Chip Ganassi, Joe Gibbs and Barney Visser, for whom we all have the highest respect, the charter system would not be the valuable and sustainable business model it has evolved into.

“Spire Motorsports will sell two of its three charters to Kaulig Racing. We will continue to field the No. 7 with Corey LaJoie as a chartered entry in 2022. We remain committed to NASCAR and the Cup Series and we will continue to look for opportunities to grow and compete in the future.”

About Spire Motorsports …
Spire Motorsports was established in 2018 and is co-owned by longtime NASCAR industry executives Jeff Dickerson and Thaddeus “T.J.” Puchyr. Spire Motorsports earned an upset victory for the ages in its first full season when Justin Haley took the checkered flag in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 7, 2019.

AJ Allmendinger to Return to Kaulig Racing in 2022

Allmendinger to Compete Full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with Part-Time NASCAR Cup Series Schedule in 2022 with Multi-Year Agreement

LEXINGTON, N.C. (June 18, 2021) – As part of a multi-year agreement with Kaulig Racing, AJ Allmendinger will continue competing full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) and part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) in select events for the 2022 season.

Following the team’s announcement of Justin Haley driving full-time in the NCS and acquiring two charters for the 2022 season, Kaulig Racing will also continue its championship-caliber NXS program, retaining veteran-driver, AJ Allmendinger.

“Not only are we planning on making a splash in the NASCAR Cup Series, we plan on continuing to trophy hunt in the Xfinity Series!” Said team owner, Matt Kaulig. “AJ has been a phenomenal addition to this Kaulig Racing family, and we are glad to have him back with us moving forward.”

Since making his first start for Kaulig Racing in 2019, Allmendinger has earned five wins, 16 top five and 19 top-10 finishes in the NXS, with the most recent win coming at Kaulig’s home track of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

“Over the past three years, I have fallen in love with this team and have enjoyed every aspect of trying to help the organization grow,” said Allmendinger. “To know that I will continue to be a part of it moving forward and that this will most-likely be the last NASCAR team I drive for, is truly special. I appreciate Matt Kaulig, Chris Rice and all the men and women at Kaulig Racing for allowing me to be a part of this team. I can’t wait to see what the future holds on both the Xfinity and Cup sides of the program and what it will look like for Kaulig Racing. I’m thoroughly enjoying it, and I can’t wait for the next couple of years together.”

In only two starts in the 2021 NCS season, Allmendinger has earned the team’s best NCS finish, a top five at Circuit of the Americas, as well as a top-10 finish at the Daytona International Speedway road course earlier this year.

“Not only a good colleague, AJ has become a good friend over the past few years,” said Kaulig Racing president, Chris Rice. “He has long been considered a ‘Road-Course Ringer,’ but since joining Kaulig Racing, he has proven to be an all-around talented driver, and we can’t wait to continue having him elevate our program.”

Slated to run the remainder of the road-course races for Kaulig Racing in the 2021 NCS season, Allmendinger will continue his part-time NCS schedule for the 2022 season, while also competing for the NXS championship for the second year in-a-row.

Kaulig Racing to Compete Full-Time in the NASCAR Cup Series with Justin Haley in 2022

Kaulig Racing Secures Two Charters for 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Season

LEXINGTON, N.C. (June 18th, 2021) – Kaulig Racing announces Justin Haley will race full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) for the 2022 season as part of a multi-year agreement, following the team’s procurement of two charters for the upcoming season.

Matt Kaulig’s affinity for NASCAR began in 2014 when he decided to put his company, LeafFilter Gutter Protection, on a NCS car as the primary partner. Bit by the NASCAR bug, Kaulig formed his own team, Kaulig Racing, in 2016 and began full-time competition in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS).

“I’m extremely proud of how far Kaulig Racing has come in just a few short years,” said Matt Kaulig, Kaulig Racing team owner. “We entered our first Daytona 500 in 2020 and have already made it known in just a handful of races that we are there to compete. It’s been no secret that going full-time racing in the NASCAR Cup Series was our goal at Kaulig Racing, and that is exactly what we are doing by purchasing two charters for 2022 and having Justin Haley as our first, full-time driver!”

Haley, who has served as Kaulig Racing’s longest-running, full-time driver in the NXS, will continue his full-time commitment as the team’s first-ever, full-time NCS driver. Haley, a past winner in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway in the NCS, has driven the team’s flagship No. 11 Chevrolet in the NXS since 2019.

“I’ve been so fortunate the past three years to drive for an amazing team owner like Matt Kaulig,” said Haley. “He has been a great mentor in my professional career, as well as my personal life away from racing. It’s been my dream from the start to race full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, and to do so with everyone at Kaulig Racing just feels right.”

During his tenure at Kaulig Racing, Haley has earned three wins, 15 top five, and 50 top-10 finishes for Kaulig Racing in the NXS, including the team’s first-ever NCS start in the 2020 Daytona 500.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the endless support from Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice,” continued Haley. “This team has done more for me than I could ever do for them. I’m so honored to stay in the Kaulig Racing family for years to come.”

Following the team’s first NCS start in 2020, the team has since made four starts in the series for the 2021 season, and has already earned a top five and two top-10 finishes in the No. 16 Camaro ZL1 1LE.

“We are confident that this is the right time to take this next step for Kaulig Racing,” said Chris Rice, president of Kaulig Racing. “I had the honor of being a part of handpicking Justin Haley as the driver of our No. 11 car in the NXS, and he has truly become an integral part of this Kaulig Racing team. We feel it’s only right that he is a part of taking that next step with us, and we are looking forward to the next couple of years with him.”

Justin Haley will make his next appearance in Kaulig Racing’s No. 16 Camaro ZL1 1LE in February of 2022 to kick start both his and Kaulig Racing’s first, full-time NCS season. Additional partnership announcements will come at a later date.

With 6 locations, we cover over 13 counties,” said Tyler Ruhe-Kahle, K&L Representative. “We are proud to continue our partnerships in racing, especially after the loss of our owner Ron Kahle Jr. to cancer last November. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to be on Austin Dillon’s car and can not thank everyone at Richard Childress Racing, Team Dillon Management & Our Motorsports for the chance to honor my father, Ron. We look forward to a great race, great finish, and hope for more opportunities like this in the years to come.”

ABOUT SPONSOR:

K&L Ready Mix is a mid-level ready-mix concrete supplier in Northwest Ohio. Founded in 1957, we began our journey hauling construction aggregates for several years, until we felt we had enough knowledge of local aggregates, we joined the concrete industry. Our six concrete plants were strategically placed so that we could overlap our coverage area, making it easier for more than anyone plant to service the same area or increase plant production on large-scale jobs. This allows us to batch concrete at multiple plants for the same job if necessary or focus our services to local customers out of multiple locations should it be required. Our resources are mostly locally purchased, with multiple locations able to utilize the same materials in an effort to keep our products consistent from one mix to the next.

The 31-year-old driver has over 490 starts across NASCAR’s three national series. He won the Daytona 500 in 2018.

Toyota Racing – Chandler Smith
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Quotes

NASHVILLE (June 19, 2021) – Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Chandler Smith was made available to media after running the fastest lap in Truck Series practice at Nashville Superspeedway:

CHANDLER SMITH, No. 18 Safelite Auto Glass Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

How was your run today at Nashville Superspeedway?

“It was honestly unbelievable honestly. I’ve never been here or seen the track in my life. I have a lot of experience at the fairgrounds up the road here a little bit and I’ve always wondered as a kid what this place was like because I don’t remember when NASCAR raced here much, but it’s awesome. I love this racetrack. I feel like it’s a driver’s racetrack. It’s close to a mile-and-a-half. It’s got the same speed as a mile-and-a-half to it at least, but it drives so much like a short track, which I love to death. It should be a fun race tonight.”

Did you have anything else in the truck and what was it like as far as being the fastest guy in practice?

“I’m not going to lie. It didn’t really set in till I set down in this chair just a second ago. I was like ‘Wow, this is a really cool deal.’ Looking at the trophies and the guitar, I thought it was a really cool deal to come off p.1 in practice at the first time back in 10 years, so it’s definitely good for myself, KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) and everybody over Safelite.”

I’m assuming you got simulator time.

“Yep.”

How did the simulator translate to the track, and did you notice anything as far as tire wear?

“Tire wear I think I was actually really solid, especially for the pace that we with-standed. I did a few long runs and I’m pretty sure that tire wear came out to be pretty solid to be honest with you. The simulator, everything translated pretty good. The only thing that I felt versus the simulator was there is a bump right on the bottom, right at the apex of three. I didn’t really feel that much in the simulator, but overall, it hit that on the nail.”

What exactly causes tires to cord?

“I think it’s a lot of combinations of what Goodyear brings to the track, and what the teams are running for setup. That’s a big difference as far as the whole tire wear situation. Like for us, for instance, we never really had a problem. As far as the other teams through the garage as far as practice, if they had problems, I’m not sure, but as far as our 18 team, it was pretty solid as far as tire wear goes.”
