Edoardo Mortara and Andre Lotterer set fastest lap times in opening Valencia test

With just less than 50 days away from the season 7 opener at the Santiago, Chile E-Prix, the FIA ABB Formula E World Series Championship was on-track for their annual test session in Valencia.

Saturday marked Day 1 for the test and we saw some unique twists at the top of the leaderboard.

In the first session, Edoardo Mortara and the ROKiT Venturi Racing entry set the fastest lap time in session one. Mortara posted a time of 1:18.148 and completed a total of 43 laps to put himself on top of the board. He was just 0.031 seconds ahead of Season 6 champion Antonio Felix da Costa, who ended up being second fastest in the test with a time of 1:18.179 seconds.

Mortara had some help posting the quickest time of the session due to a drying track, while others had to face a somewhat damp and wet racing surface with leftover water from the day’s previous showers and storms.

Completing the top five in the first session were Felix da Costa, Oliver Turvey, Alexander Sims and new Dragon Penske Autosport driver Sergio Sette Camara.

Despite posting the quickest time for test session one, Mortara was not the fastest in either sector one, two or three. In fact, Sette Camara was the fastest in sector one posting a time of 22.908, while Robin Frijns posted a time of 26.643 in sector two and Sebastien Buemi with a time of 28.173 in the final sector. Mortara earned third in the first two sectors and only received seventh in the final sector.

There are some notables, however, that took place during the first session. Even though Sergio Sette Camera was the fifth quickest in the session, the Dragon Penske Autosport driver went off the track in the second sector. The Brazilian was able to save the car from further contact with the tire barrier.

Test Session 2

As the first session was a bit wet and damp, drivers started to see some sunshine appear through the clouds for the first time this weekend. And not only did the sun come out to help dry the track a little, but a dry line on the racing surface also started to appear as well.

In the early minutes of the test, Envision Virgin’s newest racing driver Nick Cassidy set the fastest time of the day posting a time of 1:12.982, well above what the time was in the first session. However, as the test session closed, it was Andre Lotterer for TAG Heuer Porsche who was the quickest out of the 24 cars, posting a time of 1:12.519 seconds. Lotterer narrowly beat DS Techeetah driver Jean-Eric Vergne who placed second by 0.088 seconds.

“P1 is always a good thing,” said Lotterer. “But the priority was to find out more about the car and get through our testing programme. We almost managed to do everything we wanted to do today. It’s a never-ending process to find a better car balance and we’re never happy. There’s plenty to do better and it’s a tight gap to P2, so we need to keep working hard in the next few days.”

Cassidy, for Envision Virgin Racing, impressed a lot of people as he was quicker than anyone else. The New Zealander ended up fourth quickest of the day on the speed charts.

‘Really happy to get started here in Formula E. It’s been tough in the past few months, but I think myself and the team have made the most of it and I felt very prepared for today and this testing. I’m excited to be racing alongside Robin, he’s a natural talent and he is surely fast on track. With us it will be a constant evolution throughout the season and I will definitely be asking him more questions as the season develops.’

Jean-Eric Vergne, Antonio Felix da Costa, Cassidy and Alexander Sims completed the top five.

Testing for Day 2 is slated for 9 a.m. Central European Time, which translates to 3 a.m. ET in the United States. There is no TV for live testing coverage, but fans can follow along with live timing/scoring on their website.

Garrett Smith Preparing For Gobbler 100 Weekend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – COCHRAN, Ga. – (Nov. 27, 2020) – Garrett Smith will wrap up a busy 2020 campaign by competing during Gobbler 100 weekend this Friday and Saturday at Georgia’s Cochran Motor Speedway.

Smith will be competing in the crate late model portion of the event, which pays $3,000 to the winner following a 40-lap feature on Saturday evening at the three-eighths-mile dirt oval.

Should he manage to pull his car into victory lane at the conclusion of the event, it would be Smith’s fourth victory of the season overall and his third of the year at Cochran Motor Speedway.

“We’ve been really good at Cochran all year,” said Smith, a Barry Wright Race Cars developmental driver. “The last race we won there we won our heat and led every lap of the feature, so I know we can do it again this weekend. This race is going to draw a lot of good cars, so we’ll have to be on our game, but I know my team will bring me a good car and we’re going to try and be up front when it counts.”

Smith, who also has a victory at Georgia’s Boyd’s Speedway this year, said that the chance to race at Cochran wouldn’t be possible without his fans, family and sponsors.

“I love going to Cochran because the fans are great there. They really make me feel at home,” said Smith. “We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the fans or without our sponsors like Atlanta Paving and Concrete, Wiley X, TMC, BKP Art, Dirt Car Lift or MPM Marketing. My parents are really supportive of me and I hope I can bring them a trophy as a post-Thanksgiving present this weekend.”

Latest of November around NASCAR

Make Room at the Table

Move over Chevy, Ford, and Toyota because you might have company starting in 2023 when more manufacturers join NASCAR’s Big Three. One of the biggest barriers to entry for other automakers is the V8 engine. Many don’t make them and it would be too costly to design an assembly line predicated solely for NASCAR competition.

Chassis development was another mammoth hurdle to overcome but next year NASCAR will release its Next Gen car which will be a spec design that all manufacturers must follow, thereby eliminating the R&D needed to create one’s own chassis concept.

“The difficulty for us, obviously we were super focused on getting the races in. We haven’t had a ton of conversations with other [new] OEM’s during this COVID situation,” NASCAR President Steve Phelps stated.

“They’ve kind of had their own issues. You know, with supply chains and making sure they’re getting vehicles out.”

“When the season ends, we’ll start to restart those conversations,” Phelps stated during the final weekend in Phoenix. “There’s only a certain number of hours in a day. And those have taken a bit of a pause.”

“I think we are actually a more attractive sport today, to a new OEM than we were back in March. I believe that to be true. It’s not that we were not an attractive sport for them to make investments. But I think now, more than ever.”

Around the Oval

Martin Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch took the Next Gen car for a spin at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the early reports on the highly anticipated vehicle were positive. James Small, Truex Jr’s crew chief, stated the overall evaluation of the 2022 NASCAR Next Gen model was positive but there were still a few issues to be worked out.

“It’s an interesting beast. We started off on the ROVAL on Monday and both guys, Kurt and Martin, were complimentary of how well it drove around there.

“They had a lot of fun and then yesterday, we ran in the oval package and there’s still a few challenges and bugs that they’ve got to iron out.”

“But I’m sure they’ve still got a whole year to get on top of it so they’re gonna work hard on that. And hopefully, we end up with a good product in the end.”

Apparently, the power steering system and design is one of the primary concerns but Small is confident that the designers will rectify and improve any issues over the next year before it is rolled out sometime in the near future. Due to the global pandemic, an exact release date has not been announced.

“Just some issues with the steering system you know the tires are different now, the compliance is so different. The feel that drivers get now is very, very different to what they’ve experienced in the past. So just trying to refine that and give them what they need. And in terms of the response from the steering, the power steering system as a whole.”

“Think NASCAR have got some good ideas on how to fix that, I’m sure that will get ironed out real soon. Overall, they had a good time driving over the two days, it’s done well,” concluded Small.

Valentine’s Day can’t come soon enough because in addition to chocolate, flowers, and romance there will be the best drivers in the world, circling the oval at the Daytona 500. And, of course, sportsbooks are already setting lines for next year’s races including the Great American Race.

3 Ways to Restore Your Car and Have it Looking as Good as You First Bought It

Every car owner wants their car to look as shiny as it did when they first bought it. But despite carefully washing it regularly and applying a new coat of wax every few months, swirl marks, stains, and chips start to populate the vehicle’s exterior. Besides, water spots, grime, and dirt start sticking on the car even after a thorough wash. Well, if you have this problem, here are a few solutions you should consider.

Hiring the Right Professional

The first step is to hire the right professional to do your exterior car detailing or to perform a full car restoration on your vehicle. Make sure you get an expert that can restore the condition of your vehicle and that is knowledgeable about the work needed to perform a full car restoration. While most car owners wash their car regularly, only expert detailing will restore a car’s exterior looking like new. But if you want to save some money and do it at home, you can opt for a second option – a wash kit. We know what you are thinking – “Another one? But I already have how many?” We know how you feel – we have tried all those things too. And now, we are going to tell you what worked for us. If you are okay with applying the solution yourself, make sure to opt for a sealant or coating product. While it does not provide the same level of shine as professional detailing, it still does an excellent job of protecting your car’s surface from stains and swirl marks.

Full Exterior Vehicle Detailing

This process entails cleaning, vacuuming, and restoring the earlier condition of the car’s exterior. These include wheels, tires, and windows. This service is great if you want to restore the original shine of your car. The procedure can be done in two ways: the first procedure uses a pressure washer and cleansing agents, which is practically ideal for dark-colored vehicles. You can also opt for a waterless, comprehensive car detailing Killeen. The process uses products like degreasers and polishes and it’s quite efficient because you don’t need to dry the bodywork to complete the process. The next phase is polishing to reinstate the car’s shine and this is followed by waxing. The wax protects and seals the polish while adding a glossy shine to the car.

Full Vehicle Restoration

This process is usually done after full vehicle detailing, followed by paint correction before applying a paint sealant to protect the car for years. The best paint sealant for long-term protection is ceramic coating. The leading car dealers specialize in high-end ceramic coating Killeen and once the process is over, the vehicle looks even better than it did when you first drove it out of the showroom. The process can take up to 5 days depending on the condition of your car. The service can turn out to be significantly costly compared to other less-involving procedures, especially for high-end vehicles.

If you truly care about preserving or restoring the quality of your car, you should probably consider getting a full exterior car detailing or a full car restoration. Make sure you get an expert to do the job!

Early penalty costs Rebel Rock Racing runner-up finish in Sebring season finale

Rebel Rock Racing

SEBRING, FL (25 November 2020) – A penalty served early in the race came back to bite Rebel Rock Racing on the final lap of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season on Saturday, with the team going from second to 10th in the Alan Jay Automotive Network 120 at Sebring International Raceway.

Robin Liddell was poised to take the white flag in second place in the No. 71 Urban Grid Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R started by Frank DePew. However, he was forced to pit for a late driver change when the team realized that the time served on a penalty by DePew on the fifth lap did not count towards his drive time, meaning DePew came three seconds shy of meeting the required 40 minutes.

The setback was a frustrating one, as it technicality erased the chance at a big result, with the team having executed on plan from start to finish in the season-ending race.

DePew started a career-best ninth, and held that position on the opening lap. On the following circuit, he was involved in three-wide traffic as he pulled inside the 7 th and 8 th place cars who were battling each otherheading into the fastest corner on the circuit. While he tried to give his competitor room, he was assessed a drive-through penalty for accident responsibility. DePew rejoined the race in 23 rd and he worked his way all the way back to ninth when the race went to its only caution on lap 12. DePew pitted at the 40-minute mark and turned the car over to Liddell.

“Frank did a fantastic job this weekend in qualifying with his best start to date. Unfortunately he got a drive-through [penalty] for the contact in Turn 1 which I think was a pretty harsh call,” Liddell explained. “However, the time you are in pit lane doesn’t count for driver minimum time, as when you hit the timing loop at pit in, your drive time stops. We either missed that fact or hadn’t figured exactly where we were on track when he was called into the pits during a yellow flag and hit the pit entry loop for the driver change, so I believe we were 3.8 seconds under the time. Even though we drove up to second place, we had to do a pit stop to put Frank back in to run the final lap. We lost 9 positions in the pits, coming out in 11 th place. Frank ran down and passed the 10 th place GS car, and we still managed a top 10 finish. Failure to meet the minimum drive time would have disqualified the car.

Liddell went to the lead on lap 33 and led two laps before his final pit stop with 36 minutes remaining. Running eighth, Liddell fought back and took second on lap 44. Running 16.336 seconds behind the eventual winner, Liddell cut the deficit to 8.385 seconds before his final unplanned pit stop.

On his charge through the pack, Liddell recorded the fastest lap of the race, which also set a new class record.

“It was an unfortunate situation,” Liddell said. “We had a strong car and ultimately had the pace to win the race. We’ve done a lot of running with the Camaro at Sebring over the last two years so we know this track very well and the car is very well dialed in there. I wasn’t really surprised at how fast we ran today but in the end, it wasn’t enough.”

The turn of events cost Rebel Rock Racing what would likely have been a third podium of the season, with DePew and Liddell finishing first and third in the two rounds at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

“I’m frustrated by the call and how our race ended up, but I will tell you that I am not at all frustrated by the way the team prepared for this weekend, and how Robin flat drove the wheels off the car today,” said DePew. “ Between starting as well as we have all year long, good pit stops, and our overall team performance, we had a very good weekend going. So to have it all come undone by a matter of a few seconds is disappointing but there were a lot of big positives to take away from the weekend. We will come back stronger next time.”

The 2021 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge is scheduled to begin on Friday, Jan. 29, at Daytona International Speedway.

AFTER FRUSTRATING 2020 SEASON PHILLIPS IS LOOKING FORWARD TO 2021 SEASON AT SOUTH BOSTON SPEEDWAY

Scott Phillips is pictured with the car he drives in the Pure Stock Division. After a tough 2020 season the Halifax, Virginia resident is hoping to have a new car ready for the 2021 season. (Photo Courtesy South Boston Speedway)

South Boston, Va….This season has been a tough one for Scott Phillips. The Halifax, Virginia resident had looked forward to racing in the Pure Stock Division at South Boston Speedway in 2020 only to see the COVID-19 pandemic crush that hope.

Phillips attempted to race at other speedways from time to time, but misfortune struck virtually every time.

“2020 has been rough,” Phillips said with a sigh.

“I got tired of waiting for some racing to start (at South Boston Speedway) and started going to some other tracks and had problems with one thing or another every time.”

Phillips made his first attempt to race in 2020 at Orange County Speedway in North Carolina and immediately suffered misfortune.

“I ended up getting into an accident during practice and it twisted the car,” Phillips explained during a break in a recent testing session at South Boston Speedway.

“It pushed the roll cage and door pillar in really bad. I straightened it (the car’s chassis) up, but it’s not right. I’ve been doing things with the (chassis) setup to compensate. It (the car) is good, but it’s not like it should be.”

After the mishap in his first attempt to go racing in 2020, Phillips encountered some form of misfortune every time he attempted to compete. Phillips worked on his car during his recent test session at South Boston Speedway to prepare for an event at a nearby track. Unfortunately, he had issues yet another time.

The combination of not being able to race at his home track, South Boston Speedway, combining with the misfortune in his few attempts to race this season have made 2020 very frustrating for Phillips.

“Last year (2019) I finished the season off strong and had the car set up right,” Phillips said.

“I ran up front really well in the last race of the season, led a lot of laps at Orange County Speedway and finished second in one of their races last year. This year everything just seemed to fall apart.”

With the 2020 season behind him, Phillips is looking ahead to 2021with hopes of much better future fortunes.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to South Boston Speedway for a full season 2021,” Phillips noted, “and hopefully, with some things I have learned and a new car, maybe I will be able to get back up front.”

The new car Phillips plans to bring to South Boston Speedway in 2021 will be another Nissan.

“I plan on having a brand-new car for next year, and maybe turn this car into a backup car if I can cut some stuff apart during the winter,” Phillips explained.

“I definitely will be in a different car next year for the primary car.”

Not only does Phillips have plans to bring out a new primary car for 2021, he has additional plans in the works as well.

“I’ve also got a Nissan 240 hatchback that used to be raced at Orange County Speedway,” noted Phillips.

“That car will be turned into a second car for a back-up car next year. I may have somebody running that car for me. I’ve got a couple of guys who want to drive it, so we’ll see. I know if something happens to my car I will have something to fall back on.”

While weather temperatures have fallen some over the past few weeks with the arrival of fall there are still a lot of good days ahead for drivers and race teams wishing to schedule test sessions to work on their cars and begin preparations for the 2021 season.

South Boston Speedway is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for teams wishing to schedule testing sessions. The track is available for testing from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Teams wishing to schedule a test at South Boston Speedway should contact the speedway office at 434-572-4947 at least a day ahead to schedule a test session.

The 2021 season at “America’s Hometown Track” kicks off on Saturday, March 20, 2021 with twin races for the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Model Stock Cars, twin races for the track’s Limited Sportsman Division and races for the Pure Stock and Hornets Divisions.

Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour Marks Return of Pole-Winning Corvette C6.R From the 2007 12 Hours of Sebring

Fifth Running of HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour Presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network December 3 – 6 at Sebring International Raceway

SEBRING, Florida (November 25, 2020) – Pierce Marshall and Matador Motorsports bring the Corvette C6.R that won the GT1-class pole in 2007 for the 12 Hours of Sebring back to the legendary circuit next weekend for the fifth running of the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network at Sebring International Raceway, December 3 – 6.

Along with professional co-driver and coach Eric Foss, Marshall will compete in the 2006 No. 3 Corvette C6.R for the first time in what is very likely the car’s first trip back to Sebring after 2007’s pole and second-place race finish in the GT1 class.

Marshall, Foss and the team put the No. 3 Corvette through a successful shakedown this past Friday at Texas Motorsports Ranch, where Matador Motorsports is headquartered. The team took delivery of the car back at their race shop earlier in November after recently retired Corvette Racing guru Dan Binks and Binks Motorsports put a new motor in the C6.R.

“I bought the car in early 2017 from V8 Racing, a Dutch team in The Netherlands,” Marshall said. “I believe it was running in the Creventic 24H Endurance Series and raced in the 24 Hours of Dubai a couple of times. The car had a lot of time and racing miles on it when I got it, so it went to Pratt & Miller to go through a significant rebuild and restoration. As far as I know, this will be its first visit back to Sebring since that 2007 race.”

Jan Magnussen won the 2007 Sebring pole in the No. 3 in his first full season start with Corvette Racing after initially joining the team as an endurance race driver. He and co-drivers Johnny O’Connell and Ron Fellows went on to finish second in the 12 Hour race just behind the sister No. 4 C6.R for a one-two Corvette Racing sweep.

Magnussen and O’Connell went on to score three victories in the No. 3 later in 2007 at Houston, Mosport (pictured above) and Detroit, but Sebring is perhaps the most appropriate venue for the Corvette’s return to North American competition.

“There is no doubt that Corvette Racing has had remarkable success at Sebring,” Marshall said. “They have won 11 class victories there since 2002. I grew up a die-hard Chevy guy, as was my father, and to be racing one of the factory Corvettes is very special to me. I hope I can carry on their legacy of perseverance and dedication to excellence into vintage competition.”

Marshall has restored his C6.R with the familiar Velocity Yellow livery the No. 3 wore for all three of its race wins, but the 2007 Sebring race saw the Corvette adorned in a special Arctic White paint scheme (pictured above). The livery paid tribute to Fellows, who was wrapping up his accomplished driving career, and saluted the limited edition Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Champion Corvette Z06 street car, which was the first signed special edition in Corvette’s then 54-year history.

In addition to the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour, the season-ending HSR weekend also features the HSR Sebring Historics. Races on that event’s schedule include the final 2020 rounds of the HSR WeatherTech Sprint Series, the HSR B.R.M. Chronographes Endurance Challenge races, HSR Stoner Car Care Global GT, HSR Classic RS Cup and the HSR Sasco Sports International/American Challenge.

Detailed event information for the Classic Sebring 12 Hour and Sebring Historics, including weekend schedules and entry lists, is available at www.HSRRace.com.

Spectator tickets for the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour are available on-site at Sebring International Raceway beginning Thursday, December 3. For more information please visit www.HSRTickets.com.
