FUNNY CAR POINTS LEADER AUSTIN PROCK FOCUSED ON SAME APPROACH AS PLAYOFFS OPEN AT PEP BOYS NHRA NATIONALS

READING, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2024) – Austin Prock has enjoyed a terrific 2024 regular season in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, racking up five victories and advancing to eight final rounds in his first year in the Funny Car ranks.

Heading into this weekend’s 39th annual Pep Boys NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, Prock doesn’t plan on adjusting his mindset or his approach as the Countdown to the Championship playoffs open. It’s a new position for Prock this time of year, but it would be hard to argue switching something up that has worked so well this season for the John Force Racing team.

Prock and his team, led by his father, crew chief Jimmy Prock, have been stellar in all conditions in their 11,000-horsepower Cornwell Tools Chevrolet Camaro SS and that aggressive style won’t change with everyone now chasing him in the postseason. His points lead now stands at 39 over Bob Tasca III heading to Maple Grove Raceway and with a flurry of standouts right behind him, Prock knows it’s a great challenge in front of him.

“I don’t think we need to race any different. We need to have the same mindset and fight our way through it,” Prock said. “Our lead isn’t much and you’re going to have to be on kill every single round. It’s going to be a dogfight to the finish, for sure. I’m trying to make the most of this opportunity. We’ve got a fast hot rod and I’m enjoying driving it, and I’m looking forward to trying to finish this out strong.”

Last season, Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), Matt Hartford (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) all claimed wins in their respective categories and this year’s race will again be broadcast on FS1 and FOX, including elimination coverage on FOX on Sunday at 2 or 4:30 p.m. ET (depending on local listings).

It is the first of six races in the Countdown to the Championship, but don’t expect a radical shift from Prock after an incredible first 14 races. The team qualified No. 1 a whopping 10 times in the regular season and that often previewed a strong weekend for Prock, who advanced to the final round seven times when he qualified in the top position.

His success in the Mission #2Fast2TastyChallenge, which included seven wins and 25 bonus points, gave him the biggest points advantage in any class to open the playoffs, but Prock knows that could be wiped away instantly.

Prock won at Maple Grove Raceway in 2022 in Top Fuel, using a hard-charging finish to end up third in points. Getting his first in Funny Car at the fan-favorite facility won’t be easy, especially going against the likes of Tasca, defending world champ Matt Hagan, Ron Capps, J.R. Todd, Blake Alexander and Jack Beckman, who is driving for John Force in the Countdown to the Championship.

Prock certainly enters the race with momentum after his first U.S. Nationals victory and he’s eager to see how the next six races unfold.

“Any race weekend you go into coming off a win, it definitely gives you a little pep in your step,” Prock said. “Winning the U.S. Nationals was special for my family and we’re excited for the Countdown. We’ve got to go into these next six races and keep doing the job we’ve been doing. We have to go in and execute and try to find a way to perform better than we have all year long. There’s a lot of good cars out and you can’t count out any of these teams. I think everyone is in for a treat in the Countdown.”

In Top Fuel, Kalitta’s Reading win a year ago spurred his run to a world championship. He’ll look to make it two in a row, taking on the likes of Justin Ashley, who opens the playoffs second in points, Shawn Langdon, Steve Torrence, Antron Brown, Brittany Force, Clay Millican and Top Fuel newcomer Tony Stewart.

Pro Stock’s Hartford will look to get his season on track, but it won’t be easy in a loaded category that includes points leader Dallas Glenn, Aaron Stanfield, who starts the postseason second in points, reigning world champion Erica Enders, and veterans Greg Anderson and Jeg Coughlin Jr.

Six-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Smith started the playoffs with a Reading win last year, but Gaige Herrera dominated the rest of the way, winning the last five races en route to the title. Herrera has won seven of nine races in 2024 and has a second straight world title in mind, taking on John Hall, Richard Gadson and Angie Smith.

The event also will feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, as well as Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown and Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Mountain Motor Pro Stock.

Fans will be invited all weekend long to the Nitro Alley Stage, which is the main entertainment hub in the pits, hosting Nitro School, meet and greets, music and much more. Race fans at Maple Grove Raceway can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans are invited to congratulate the event winners.

As always, fans get an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet in Reading. Fans get a unique chance to see teams in action and service their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers, and more. They can also visit NHRA’s popular Nitro Alley and Manufacturers Midway, an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, merchandise, food and fun for the entire family.

NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 2:30 and 5 p.m. ET on Friday and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday at 12 and 2:30 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET on Sunday. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, as well as at 12:30 p.m. ET on Sunday and eliminations on FOX at 2 or 4:30 p.m. ET (check local listings).

The Science of Speed: Advanced Plastic Surgery Techniques and Precision Racing Insights by Dr. Steve Laverson

In the realm of aesthetic enhancements, the intersection of advanced plastic surgery techniques and the dynamics of precision racing reveals fascinating parallels. Understanding how meticulous planning, expert execution, and constant innovation drive both fields can enhance your appreciation for the artistry involved in cosmetic procedures. Dr. Steve Laverson, with over three decades of experience, exemplifies this relationship through his commitment to delivering results that mirror the speed and precision found on the racetrack.

Just as precision racing relies on cutting-edge technology and skilled drivers to achieve optimal performance, modern plastic surgery incorporates advanced methodologies to enhance safety and results. Each procedure requires a meticulous approach, emphasizing the importance of precision in both fields. As you explore the landscape of modern aesthetic practices, you will discover how Dr. Laverson applies principles from racing—such as efficiency and attention to detail—to help you achieve the best outcomes.

By delving into the science behind these advancements, you gain insight into the transformative power of modern techniques. Embracing the parallels between these disciplines not only elevates your understanding of cosmetic surgery but also encourages an appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into revitalizing your appearance.

Enhancing Form and Function with Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery serves not just to improve appearance but also to restore functionality. By understanding the various branches of this field, including reconstructive and plastic surgery, you can appreciate how these techniques enhance both form and function. Advancements in technology, such as augmented reality, further enrich these processes, ensuring precision and better outcomes.

Reconstructive Surgery: Restoring Functionality

Reconstructive surgery aims to restore normal function and appearance after trauma, surgery, or congenital deformities. This branch often involves complex procedures that can include skin grafts, tissue flap surgeries, and microsurgery.

Surgeons utilize advanced techniques to realign structures and improve functionality. For example, breast reconstruction post-mastectomy allows for both physical restoration and emotional healing. This type of surgery enhances patients’ quality of life, as it often restores abilities that may have been lost.

Cosmetic Surgery: Elevating Confidence

Cosmetic surgery focuses on enhancing your appearance, often leading to increased self-esteem and confidence. Procedures such as facelifts, rhinoplasty, and liposuction can alter features you wish to improve.

Surgeons assess individual needs to create a personalized plan. Techniques may involve minimally invasive methods, which reduce recovery time and risks. You benefit from approaches designed to maintain your natural look while achieving desired aesthetic goals.

The Role of Augmented Reality in Pre-Operative Planning

Augmented reality (AR) is increasingly used in plastic surgery for pre-operative planning. This technology allows surgeons to visualize the surgical site in 3D, improving precision during procedures.

By utilizing AR, you can see potential outcomes before the surgery begins. This innovation aids in patient education, allowing you to understand the surgery’s implications better. It enhances decision-making and can lead to higher satisfaction rates.

Incorporating AR into surgery practices enables a more surgical approach, reducing risks associated with traditional methods.

Precision Techniques in Plastic Surgery

Precision techniques in plastic surgery are focused on customizing procedures to meet individual patient needs, ensuring expert practitioner involvement, and fostering open communication throughout the process. This approach enhances results and patient satisfaction.

Specialized Procedures: Tailoring to Individual Needs

Every patient presents unique anatomical and personal characteristics that shape their surgical requirements. Board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in various procedures, including rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, and facial rejuvenation.

During consultations, healthcare providers assess factors such as skin type, age, medical history, and aesthetic goals. This enables the surgeon to create a tailored surgical plan, incorporating advanced techniques like minimally invasive options and robotic-assisted procedures.

Specialized procedures can improve precision and reduce recovery times, aligning with individual patient expectations. Keeping up with technological advancements further ensures that you receive the most effective treatment suited to your specific situation.

Board Certification and Verified Expertise

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon is crucial for your safety and desired outcome. Board certification indicates that a surgeon has completed rigorous training, including residency programs and specialized fellowships in plastic surgery.

Reputable medical boards maintain criteria for certification, including ongoing education requirements. Verifying a surgeon’s credentials through platforms like the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons can bolster your confidence in their expertise.

Selecting verified doctors ensures that you are engaging a specialist who adheres to established standards and ethics, which is vital for the complexities involved in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

Patient Communication: Enhancing the Journey

Effective patient communication is a cornerstone of successful plastic surgery. Clear dialogue between you and your surgeon fosters trust and ensures that your expectations are understood.

During the initial consultation, discussing your aesthetic goals openly allows the surgeon to provide tailored advice. Utilizing visual aids, before-and-after photos, and detailed descriptions of procedures helps clarify any uncertainties you may have.

Moreover, continuous communication throughout the surgical journey ensures that your questions are addressed timely. This approach emphasizes a collaborative relationship, enhancing your overall experience and satisfaction with the surgical process.

CLUB QUOTES

John Hunter Nemechek, Driver of the No. 42 Dollar Tree Toyota Camry XSE:

“There have been a lot of changes made to Watkins Glen [International], including to some of the rumble strips; I am not sure if this is going to help the racing or hurt it. I think that it may create some more passing zones and being able to set up passes a little bit better. I am looking forward to getting in the car at Watkins Glen and back on a road course. I feel like we’ve made gains on the [road course] program which showed at Chicago, so far so looking forward to getting back.”

Ben Beshore, Crew chief of the No. 42 Dollar Tree Toyota Camry XSE:

“There was a wheel force transducer test a few weeks ago that we were able to gather some data on the new tire that we’ll see this weekend. It shows a lot of tire fall off, so that will be a new wrinkle for Watkins Glen. Typically, we don’t see any fall-off here due to the newer pavement but this weekend we’ll see several seconds of fall-off. This week is just as important as any other for unloading with good speed. We do have two practice sessions and an extra set of tires for practice so hopefully we’ll be able to dial the car in for qualifying.”

Erik Jones, Driver of the No. 43 Family Dollar Toyota Camry XSE:

“I think racing with a different tire at Watkins Glen will be interesting. The fall off is faster so strategy will be different than what has been done in the past. I think The Glen is a good race in the playoffs, we’ve raced there for a while and offers a different kind of racing.”

Dave Elenz, Crew chief of the No. 43 Family Dollar Toyota Camry XSE:

“I think Watkins Glen deserves a spot in the playoffs. We’ve been going there a long time. All of the teams have good information there, good history there, drivers know that race track very well and it showcases a road course driving ability, and I think as many road courses as we have, I think that’s a really good one to represent. You know, the best of the best at a road course. I enjoy the race and I think it’s fun to watch. It’s neat to have it in the playoffs.

“It will be interesting, and I think even better for racing this year, you know now that the fall off is going to be much greater. You’re not going to be able to stay out on old tires and keep your track position. Like some of these guys have done in the past, you’re going to have to put tires on them when the caution comes out and work hard to get that position back. This will be the most fall off we’ve ever had.

I think these other tracks we go to you have cars that are good on the short run and cars that are good on the long run. Being at the road course, a lot of these tire options that we’ve brought, especially Watkins Glen, if you’re good, you’re good, you’ll stay good throughout the run, so now there’s going to be a difference. People going to the front as tires get older, swapping around on new tires. It will be interesting because Watkins Glen the past couple of years with this car and the tire combination has been flat out, charging as hard as you can and now you’re going to have to save tires. Know that you have to run 20-25 laps and they might go away completely, so I’m excited to see what they do.”

Notes of Interest

● The NASCAR Cup Series has two remaining road course races in the 2024 season, with the historic Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International next up on the schedule. The field will tackle the serpentine 2.45-mile layout during Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen. For Josh Berry, who is contending for 2024 Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors, he will make his debut at the track in NASCAR’s premier series in Sunday’s event. The 33-year-old driver has two starts at Watkins Glen in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, his best finish of ninth earned in August 2022 for JR Motorsports after starting 17th and finishing the second stage in seventh. Berry’s second Xfinity Series appearance at Watkins Glen came in August 2023, when he started seventh and finished 20th.

● Sunday marks crew chief Rodney Childers’ 16th start at Watkins Glen in NASCAR’s premier series. The veteran shot caller’s drivers have accounted for one top-five finish and five top-10s at The Glen. Best of those came in August 2015 with former No. 4 driver Kevin Harvick driving to a third-place finish after starting fourth and leading 29 laps.

● The No. 4 team will employ multiple spotters Sunday led by the team’s primary set of eyes in the sky, Eddie D’Hondt, who will be working in front of his home state crowd. D’Hondt hails from Long Island, New York, five and a half hours from the road course that helped fuel his passion for motorsports. The No. 4 spotter joined Stewart-Haas Racing ahead of Berry’s rookie campaign after the two worked together when Berry filled in for an injured Chase Elliott in the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports entry last year. During his tenure at Hendrick, D’Hondt collaborated on 18 Cup Series victories and the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series championship with the No. 9 team after spotting for four-time Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon.

● With nine races remaining in the 2024 Cup Series season, Berry and the No. 4 team are competing for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year title. Currently ranked 24th overall and second in the rookie standings, Berry looks to close a 23-point gap to fellow rookie Carson Hocevar in the remaining events. Since Berry is not in the playoffs, his best possible points finish this season is 17th, and he is currently 204 markers behind current 17th-ranked driver Ross Chastain.

● Bed Bath & Beyond adorns Berry’s No. 4 Ford Mustang Dark Horse at The Glen. The partnership celebrates Bed Bath & Beyond as the ultimate online destination for home essentials, featuring an unmatched assortment for every room of the house. Whether it’s your kitchen, bedroom, outdoor space or bathroom, Bed Bath & Beyond has what you need to create a space that feels uniquely yours. From cookware and bedding to bath accessories and beyond, Bed Bath & Beyond is your go-to source for functional and stylish home essentials.

Josh Berry, Driver of the No. 4 Bed Bath & Beyond Ford Mustang Dark Horse

When preparing for this weekend’s race at Watkins Glen, how much does it help to use Ford’s simulator to get laps under your belt before hitting the track this weekend?

“Having access to the Ford simulator ahead of a road course is really helpful, at least for me, in finding the rhythm and learning how the course flows together. It’s hard to get acclimated fast with how short our practice sessions are, so having access to that tool provides me a way to get semi-used to the way the track feels in terms of the rhythm. Obviously, we can try other setup options and try to find speed – those are the two biggest things in my opinion.”

How challenging is it to go to new tracks in the NextGen car and, when you have a new track to go to, how are you able to redefine success each week?

“It’s always going to be a challenge to go to a new track in the Cup Series. The level of competition is just so high and these guys, for the most part, have more experience on these tracks than I do, so it’s hard when I am behind the eight ball most weeks. But I have a really experienced team around me and teammates to lean on with what they feel in practice and how to navigate some of the obstacles I am facing in my rookie season, all of which shortens my learning curve. For our team this weekend, a clean, mistake-free race is a successful trip to Watkins Glen.”

Of the road courses the NASCAR circuit goes to, where do you feel Watkins Glen ranks in difficulty for you personally, and how do you carry lessons from one track to another?

“Watkins Glen is a really fast road course and one that most people have experience at in some level of competition, so it’s one where, for me, you feel more comfortable heading to. COTA is hard for me and that ranks, in my opinion, the hardest one we go to. But all of them are tough just coming from a short-track background and not making a ton of laps turning left and right. There is going to be an adjustment period for a while for me and I understand that.”

Boozy Jerky will make their first NASCAR start this weekend, partnering with Gilliland and the No. 38 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for the 90-lap event. Boozy Jerky is the original booze-infused brand of beef jerky. Every bite of Boozy Jerky is meticulously hand-crafted in the US to be tender, moist, and full of rich and defining flavors.

No. 38 Boozy Jerky Ford Mustang Dark Horse:

DRIVER TODD GILLILAND:

“I’m excited for The Glen—it’s such a fun track to race on. We don’t visit many road courses, so it’s a refreshing change of pace. This weekend is significant for me, FRM, and Boozy Jerky, as it’s my 100th Cup Series start and Boozy Jerky’s debut. There’s already a lot to celebrate, and I hope we can cap it off with a win.

“I’m excited to have Boozy Jerky on board this weekend. I’m looking forward to introducing them to the NASCAR world. We have our hauler stocked up already and the entire team is excited to try it. It’ll be a good weekend.”

CREW CHIEF RYAN BERGENTY:

“Watkins Glen has been a good track for us. We left there with a solid 11th-place finish last year, but I think we can do better than that. We’re building fast Ford Mustang Dark Horses; we just need to execute at the track. The plan is simple: qualify up front and stay there. That’s easier said than done. but I think we can do that this weekend.”

Routine Maintenance Tips to Extend the Life of Your Land Rover

Owning a Land Rover reflects a taste for elegance and strength. It combines high-end features with robust performance to enhance your everyday journeys and elevate your driving experience. However, regular maintenance is necessary to maintain your car’s performance and ensure smooth operation.

Make Routine Oil Changes

It is highly recommended that the frequency of car oil changes be paid attention to maintain the performance of the Land Rover engine at a higher level. Summer can be pretty hot in some places, coupled with the constant exposure to the sun, which causes the oil to degrade. Hence, the oil should be changed as per the manufacturer’s requirements.

Land Rover Tire’s

Tire maintenance involves frequent checkups to determine any signs of damage or deterioration. Also, inflate them to the recommended tire pressure level; this ensures good grip on the road and correct tire alignment, wear, and balance.

Brake System Inspection

Brakes are essential for safe driving, especially in busy city traffic. For these reasons, it is recommended that the brake system be checked regularly to avert a failure of the entire system, which could lead to a dangerous situation.

Cooling System Maintenance

The coolant level must be frequently monitored, and the radiators, hoses, and belts should be checked for wear and tear or leakage, which can cause overheating. Additionally, listen for any weird noises or hissing sounds, which could mean you have a leak.

Fluid Checks and Changes

Fluids like engine oil, coolant, brake, and transmission fluid need special attention. Regular checks and timely changes will ensure optimal vehicle performance and it will also protect vital components from wear and tear.

Battery and Air Filter Replacement

Excessive heat can also reduce the battery’s life expectancy. Clean the battery terminals frequently for signs of corrosion and ensure they are well connected. Additionally, changing the air filter at recommended intervals will safeguard the engine from harmful contaminants, preserving its efficiency.

Transmission Service

Your Land Rover transmission requires regular maintenance to ensure smooth gear shifts. Check the transmission fluid levels and look for any signs of leaks. Have your transmission service performed by a professional at the recommended intervals to avoid costly services. Additionally, keep records of maintenance and other vehicle-related inspections for future reference.

What High Top Speeds of NASCAR Tell Us About Our Own Car Safety

Nothing is more exhilarating than screeching tires, electrified fans, and the sounds of 40 roaring engines flying by you at incredible speeds. All of these factors appeal to the senses and deliver a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience each time you visit the speedway. NASCAR has been at the heart of many Americans since its first event in 1948 at Daytona Beach. As the sport became popular, more money was invested into participating cars to make them faster. While faster cars meant they were lighter and had more horsepower, this often came at the cost of safety.

Likewise, on public roads speed and safety also clash. Understanding that a regular car is not the same as a racecar can save lives — if you were involved in a crash, a Boulder car accident lawyer can get you the compensation you deserve.

Evolution of NASCAR

Stock cars of NASCAR today can reach average speeds of 188.3 mph (on Super Speedways such as Talladega). They also have an average of 670 horsepower compared to the 152 horsepower of the 1949 Lincoln Coupe — one of the first cars to compete in a NASCAR race. Although technological development allowed for massively more powerful vehicles, it also raised the risk of injury for drivers (and fans). The deaths of NASCAR drivers rose steadily over the decades reaching its height in 2000/2001 when racing legend Dale Earnhardt and three other NASCAR drivers all died from crashes resulting in basilar skull fractures.

Safety Improvements in NASCAR

Since the death of Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR has come up with many different ways to reduce fatal accidents:

  • 2001: All drivers are required to use the HANS device (prevents the whiplash effect by synchronizing head and body)
  • 2002: Concrete walls replaced with energy-absorbing SAFER barriers, completed by 2005
  • 2003: “Free-pass” rule implemented, which froze the entire field during cautions
  • 2007: Six-point harness requirement to reduce sternum injuries (seven-point harness today)
  • 2007: Moved drivers to center of the car and added energy absorbing materials to driver side door panel
  • 2013: Updated roll bars added for increased protection during rollover crashes
  • 2017: Partnership with AMR adds a physician to on-track medical response team

High Speeds Lead to Devastating Accidents On and Off the Speedways

With average speeds reaching close to 200 mph, NASCAR crashes are spectacularly morbid. Drivers involved in rollover crashes spin sideways at such high speeds that entire panels of car fly off in all directions. For what only lasts 10 seconds feels like ages, having fans and loved ones hoping and praying that their beloved driver is ok.

Comparing this to public road high-speed car accidents by non-racecar drivers, the results are disastrous. Other than the average person not being a NASCAR driver (and not knowing how to handle a car at high-speeds), the common street cars they are pushing to the limit cannot work properly the faster they go. Race cars (like the stock cars found in NASCAR) have specialized high performance brakes compared to their street car counterparts, of which lack the proper equipment to handle these breakneck speeds. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that “12,330 people [were] killed in 2021 [from] speeding-related crashes” and “reminds everyone to slow down and arrive safely – it’s better to arrive a few minutes late than not at all.”

You Are Not a NASCAR Driver

At the end of the day, most people do not drive cars for a living (especially ones that reach top speeds of 278 mph). For this reason it is imperative that you slow down when driving your non-racing car. This will ensure the safety of you and those around you, preventing disaster car accidents that no one benefits from.
