Chase Elliott wins NASCAR Playoff race at Kansas, advances to Round of 8

Chase Elliott wheeled his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to victory lane in double overtime at Kansas Speedway. The win propels him to the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs to contend for the championship title.

The pivotal moment came on the final lap as Bubba Wallace and Denny Hamlin, fighting for the lead, made contact entering Turn 3. Elliott seized the opportunity to pass them and capture the checkered flag.

It was his second Cup Series victory this season and his 21st career win.

“Everything worked out perfectly for me,” an elated Elliott said after the race. “Had a great push through (turns) one and two. That kind of all started with the No. 6 (Brad Keselowski). I had a big run off of two. The seas kind of parted and I just was able to keep my momentum up. That was really it.”

“Obviously, we still had pretty good tires compared to those guys, but what a crazy finish.” Elliott continued. Hope you all enjoyed that; I certainly did. Really proud of this No. 9 Kelley Blue Book Chevrolet team. Had a really solid weekend, win or no win. Really nice to qualify really well. We’ll certainly enjoy this, man. This is pretty cool. Just never take this stuff for granted because it’s hard to come by. Learned that the hard way. Always enjoy it. Always appreciate it.”

It was a frustrating end in a race where Hamlin led a race-high 159 laps and had to settle for second place.  

“Just super disappointing,” Hamlin said.“ I wanted it bad. It would have been 60 (wins) for me. The team just did an amazing job with the car, just really, really fast. Gave me everything I needed. Got the restart I needed. Just couldn’t finish it there on the last corner. Obviously got really, really tight with the 23 (Wallace), and it just got real tight, and we let the 9 win.

Yeah, just mechanical failures and different things have really hindered us in years past, and we had no power steering that last run,” Hamlin continued. “Low voltage. Just a lot of things, and just couldn’t — just disappointing because I don’t think I’ve ever had a car that good to the competition. Man, I wanted it for my dad. I wanted it for everybody. Just wanted it a little too hard.”

Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, and Bubba Wallace rounded out the top five. Kyle Larson, Tyler Reddick, Brad Keselowski, William Byron and Shane van Gisbergen completed the top 10.

NASCAR heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway next weekend. It will mark the final event for the Cup and Xfinity Series in the Round of 12. At the conclusion of the races, eight drivers in each series will advance to the next round.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will also compete at Charlotte Motor Speedway as they begin the Playoffs Round of 8.

Custer Brings Home Top-20 Finish in Cup Race on Sunday

KANSAS CITY, KS (September 28, 2025) – Haas Factory Team delivered steady, determined performances at Kansas Speedway, gaining valuable ground in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. Sam Mayer and Sheldon Creed each banked key stage points to solidify their spots above the Xfinity Series cutline, while Cole Custer overcame early challenges to earn a hard-fought top-20 finish in Sunday’s Cup race.

Xfinity Series

Returning to the track where he made his NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2023, Sheldon Creed delivered a smart, strategic drive in his Ollie’s Ford to a fifth-place finish in the second race of the Xfinity Series Round of 12 — a result that boosted his playoff hopes with just one race remaining in the round.

Creed came into Kansas Speedway just seven points above the playoff cutline and qualified 10th. Early on, he slipped to 12th within the first 20 laps but quickly reported strong long-run speed. That pace showed over the course of the run, as he climbed to 11th by the end of Stage One — just outside the points-paying positions but clearly trending upward.

A four-tire stop during the stage break set up a stronger Stage Two. Restarting 11th, Creed steadily worked his way forward, cracking the top 10 by lap 60. Despite handling issues — tight in the center and free on exit — he managed the balance well and finished ninth in the stage, earning one valuable playoff point.

That momentum carried into the final stage as Creed jumped to seventh on the restart and held his ground during the green-flag cycle, making a pit stop on lap 141. A caution at lap 157 opened the door for one more round of adjustments, and after pitting under yellow, Creed used both strategy and speed to surge into the top five. Over the final 25 laps, he held firm to claim a well-earned fifth-place finish at the checkered flag — a key result as the Round of 12 heads to its final showdown.

“I would love to be a little bit more than 12 points above, but we just grinded it out all day in our Ollie’s Ford Mustang. Honestly, we weren’t really good to start the race and just kept trying to get better and better. We took big swings at it there and got a little track position and was able to hold on. We almost got to fourth there at the line, but I’m just proud of everyone at Haas Factory Team.”

Entering the final race of the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs at the ROVAL, Creed is in sixth place in the standings with 2072 points, +12 above the cutline.

41 Sam Mayer
In the second race of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Round of 12, Sam Mayer entered with a comfortable 35-point cushion above the playoff cutline — and he managed to widen that margin with strong performances in the opening stages, despite a tough finish that saw him come home 16th in his Audibel Ford.

Rolling off third on the starting grid, Mayer showed immediate speed in a car that came to life early. By lap 20, he felt confident he had one of the best cars on the track, maintaining a spot inside the top three throughout the opening run. That pace paid off, as he finished third in Stage One, banking eight valuable stage points toward his playoff total.

Following a four-tire stop during the stage break, Mayer lined up third to begin Stage Two. A caution on lap 62 briefly shuffled the field, but Mayer made the most of the restart — fighting through a loose-handling car to reclaim third. He held steady to finish the stage in the same position, adding another eight stage points to his tally, for a total of 16 on the day heading into the final segment.

The final stage proved to be more challenging. While battling hard with fellow playoff driver Sammy Smith, Mayer got loose and dropped back to sixth. A green-flag pit stop on lap 140 set him up for a strong run to the finish, and when a caution flew on lap 157, Mayer chose to stay out, restarting on the front row. However, on older tires and still struggling with handling, he faded through the field over the closing laps and ultimately finished 16th.

“We did a fantastic job today. We came here looking for points and we got that the first few stages, so we nailed everything that we wanted to do the first two stages. Obviously, the strategy call didn’t pan out in our favor, but it’s still a great day. I’m really proud of everybody at Haas Factory Tea,. I wanted more, obviously, as a race car driver, but I’m still really grateful for the spot that we’re in.”

Entering the final race of the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs at the ROVAL, Mayer sits fourth in the standings with 2103 points, +43 points to the cutline.

Cup Series

41 Cole Custer
Cole Custer showed persistence and steady improvement throughout Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway, overcoming handling challenges to bring home a 20th-place finish. After qualifying 27th and battling a tight race car early, Custer and the No. 41 team continued to make adjustments that paid off in the closing laps.

Throughout the race, the car’s balance proved to be a challenge — tight at the start of runs and loose as laps wore on — but the team stayed focused, making key under-the-hood changes and capitalizing on every opportunity. A well-timed caution allowed Custer to take the wave-around and regain a lead-lap position early, while further adjustments during Stage Two helped improve the car’s long-run speed. By the final stage, Custer was able to gain positions steadily and avoid trouble, moving into the top 25 as the laps wound down.

After receiving the free pass with 50 laps to go, Custer restarted on the lead lap and quickly gained ground, climbing as high as 22nd. A late caution with 14 laps remaining set up a critical four-tire stop, and Custer delivered on the restart — charging forward in his Haas/Andy’s Ford and holding his own in a competitive pack to finish 20th.

“Our guys did a good job sticking with and we made something out of it at the end,” Custer said. “Hopefully we can carry some momentum over to the ROVAL next week and see what we can do.”

“I honestly don’t know what I could have done. I’m leaving here feeling pretty satisfied. That was a bummer when I lost the lead on the restart when I caught the wrong timing line. Looking back, it was such a 50/50 call on those restarts whether you wanted to be on the outside or the inside. I don’t know what I would have done differently. I felt like we left it all on the table.”

Does being 24 points above the cutline going to the Roval give you enough breathing room?

“It was rewarding to be restarting on that front row and knowing that if I win I advance, and I get out of here and don’t win, that we are in a really good spot. I’m proud of our team. We are doing a really good job of controlling what we can control and getting good finishes out of it and we are running well too. I’m excited about the Roval, we’ve been really excited about the road courses and we have some breathing room, so it should be a lot of fun.”

How much of your job was to push Christopher Bell and how much was get what you could for the 19 team?

“It was tough. I’ve never really been in a situation like that, where I needed really anybody but Bubba to win in that situation. I wanted to still put it in a position where I could still win the race too. It was just tough with those restarts. They’re so circumstantial. One thing goes your way, and you can end up winning the race. One bad thing goes your way, and you end up running fifth to seventh. Just crazy the runs and how fast they develop. I thought I was going to still have a really good shot to win the race and when Bell got in the fence off of (turn) four, I had to all but stop, and it just ruined my momentum. Scrappy day for our Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Toyota. Would have loved to be obviously a little bit better today. Crazy, I think we’re averaging a top-five finish in the playoffs and we’re only 20 points above. Never feel safe at the Roval, but go there and try to do our job. Our road course stuff is pretty good there. See what we can do.”

Were you thinking you had to do whatever you could do gain points?

“That was the hard thing. That second-to-last restart, I had a huge run out of the back straightaway, and I thought I could clear, potentially. So I tried to make it three wide, but looking back on it, maybe it would have been better to hit the 20 (Christopher Bell) as hard as I could and try to get him to the lead. But it is so crazy on those restarts. You’re making split-second decisions. One variable can change, and what you thought was the right move is the wrong move. Crazy race. I’m sure it was fun to watch and go on to the next one.”

What do you think of the racing there at the end?

“To say we had a shot at the win with the way we started, you could have fooled me. We were not good. We missed it on the fire-off speed. I just really appreciate the team. Two years ago I’d probably say something dumb. Or say he’s a dumbass for that move. I don’t care if he’s my boss or not. But we’re going for the win. I hate that we gave it away there. Toyotas were super-fast, and proud to be driving one. I thought it was meant to be, and then it wasn’t. All in all the positives were we are minus 26 coming in — or minus 27 coming in. We’re minus 26 leaving. We gained a point.”

Finishing Position: 7th

Would you have done anything different on the final restart?

“I just tried to give him the best push I could. I was really fortunate the previous restart that he was able to hold the lead. I don’t know, I tried to push him and we just got separated. Obviously I want to push him out, try to help him win and then obviously keep the gap closed up to try to be in second and have a shot at it myself.

It was a tough day. I really thought our Beast Toyota Camry was really fast. We just had struggles on pit road. That’s part of racing. It’s tough. Obviously, there’s only one thing we can do at Charlotte and that’s what we’ll be focused on.”

We had a hole out at the start of the run, so we weren’t able to catch her. We’ll look ahead to Dallas in a couple weeks and look to gain more points back there.”

“I was looking forward to shaving the mustache, but it looks like we have to keep it now. We knew coming into this race that we were all chasing Austin (Prock). He’s won eight races this year, but no one is infallible. We had to be ready for when they messed up and they messed up today. I joked Jack (Beckman) at the top end ‘Wow, the kid is beatable.’ Mike Knudsen (crew chief), Phil Shuler (co-crew chief), Alex Conaway (car chief), and all of my guys worked so hard all day. The right lane was bumpy and they navigated those bumps really well. I felt good about the race car, but my lights weren’t great today. My first light was a .114 (seconds) and I can’t remember the last time I cut a .114 light. What was cool was that I was able to go to my crew chief and say ‘Hey, what help can you give me here?’ to try and cut better lights. My lights came around and that gave me confidence going into the next couple rounds. That’s the stuff that makes you a strong team. It was awesome to have American Rebel Beer here with us. We won our first race for them at St. Louis a couple years ago, then won the championship after that. Andy Ross (American Rebel CEO) is a great sponsor. How great is it that you have a sponsor you get to drink beer with? But, we also have other great sponsors like Dodge and Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage. I wake up some days and pinch myself that this is my job. We’re back in this hunt for the championship.”

Ty Dillon and the No. 10 DraftKings Chevrolet team started Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway from the 33rd position. With a fast Chevy, the team made adjustments throughout the race to continue improving the handling, moving inside the top 20 in stage two. During the final stage, Dillon was able to avoid multiple wrecks and take advantage of the restarts to gain valuable positions. With an overtime finish, Dillon earned a solid 13th-place finish.

It’s probably the first clean race we’ve had in three or four weeks without any of us making mistakes. AJ Allmendinger qualified 20th for the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. Allmendinger fought the handling of his No. 16 Action Industries Chevy throughout the race, asking the team for help with rear security on longer runs. He drove into the top-15 before a long green-flag pit stop resulted in Allmendinger falling back to 22nd place in the final stage. With 51 laps remaining, Allmendinger was caught in the tail end of a wreck, ultimately ending the day for the No. 16 team. Allmendinger was relegated to a 26th-place finish.

Elliott Drives to Second Win of the Season, Berth Into the Round of Eight at Kansas

  • In a dramatic overtime finish, a masterful restart by Chase Elliott saw the Team Chevy driver go from the eighth position to make a final lap pass for the lead to earn his second win of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season. The victory – his second in the series at Kansas Speedway – delivered the former champion a guaranteed ticket into the Round of Eight
  • Despite a dismal start of the day for William Byron and the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team, the combination of a late-race caution and a fast two-tire spot netted into a strong rebound that saw the team take home a ninth-place finish. Taking advantage of an already solid points cushion, the 27-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina, native will head into the Round of 12 elimination race ranked sixth in the playoff standings and 40-points above the cutline.
  • It was a pair of Hendrick Motorsports teammates that led Team Chevy to the green-flag Sunday afternoon at Kansas Speedway with Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott claiming the second-row to kick off the second race of the Round of 12. Larson, the track’s defending winner, settled into the third position as laps clicked off in the opening stage. Slowly closing in on the leaders, Larson made the pass for second on Lap 32 before the green-flag pit cycle got underway. A quiet driver behind the wheel, crew chief Cliff Daniels called Larson to pit road for their first stop of the day on Lap 36 – ultimately finding himself back in the runner-up position as the cycle was complete. As the first caution of the day flew with 25 laps to go in the stage, varying pit strategies saw much of the top-10 runners opt for a fresh set of four tires to set up for the 18-lap run to bring Stage One to a close. Lining up on the front-row, Larson went on to bring Team Chevy to the first green-white checkered flag in the second position – leading fellow playoff contenders, Elliott (third) and Ross Chastain (fifth), to valuable point-earning results in Stage One.
  • With the majority of the field hitting pit road under the stage break, Larson and Elliott led the field off pit road among the cars that made a four-tire stop – regaining their running positions to start the next 85-lap run. The race for second began to heat up among the Hendrick Motorsports teammates with Elliott making the pass for position on Lap 102. Despite losing a few positions during an intense battle among the second- through fifth-place drivers, Larson continued to find rhythm in the fifth position as the green-flag pit cycle was looming near the halfway point of the stage. Once the field cycled through, Elliott and Larson found spots back in the top-four with 35 laps to go in the stage. Going green to the end of Stage Two, the pair of teammates were among the four drivers to earn top-five points in both stages with Larson and Elliott taking the next green-white checkered flag in the third and fourth positions, respectively. With Chastain crossing the line to collect eighth-place points, the trio of Team Chevy playoff contenders were among the seven drivers to earn points in both stages.
  • With two positions gained in the race off pit road, Elliott inherited a spot on the front-row to take the green-flag for the final stage. With a masterful restart, Elliott drove his No. 9 Chevrolet to the top position to lead his first laps of the day. The long green-flag run proved to be a challenge for Elliott, falling to the fourth position before the caution came out with 57 laps to go. With another clutch stop by the No. 9 pit crew, Elliott gained yet another position on pit road to find himself in third position for the restart. Maintaining a running position in the top-five, Elliott battled through a pair of overtime finishes to make his second trip to victory lane this season.

We damaged our splitter and definitely didn’t have anything we could work with after that. Thanks to Richard Boswell and everyone on this RCR team for fighting through challenges and never giving up.”

You looked like you were a top-five car for most of the day, and then you scraped the wall there at the end. How much did that affect your ride?

“It didn’t affect my ride, I don’t think. I actually felt pretty good after it. My No. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet was good all race long. I just couldn’t go for 15 laps like the Toyota’s could, but I felt like after that, we were really good. We could kind of move around and get some lines going. It’s just really difficult to pass. But overall, our team brought a really fast Chevy. I just need to study the restarts and those first handful of laps on each restart to see what I could do better with the balance that I had. But overall, it was a great day. We’re 54-points above the cutline, happy about that heading into the Charlotte ROVAL.”

Kyle Busch, No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet

“The entire No. 8 Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Chevrolet team worked throughout the race to make adjustments to make us competitive today. We made forward progress, but it just wasn’t enough to get us where we needed to be to contend for a victory this afternoon at Kansas Speedway. “Everything worked out perfect for me. Had a great push through (turns) one and two. That kind of all started with the No. 6 (Brad Keselowski). I had a big run off of two. “We struggled there at the beginning. We missed something, but we made a bunch of changes and our No. 24 Cincinnati Chevrolet came to life there in the final stage. I’m not sure… it was really confusing, honestly. I couldn’t carry any speed, and then the changes we made seemed to fix it and I could carry speed there at the end. Even on two-tires, I was competitive on the restarts. It’s just a bummer that it was the way it was early, but the bright side is that we finished well and we found something there at the end.”

What does the rebound say about your team, that you were able to hang in there?

“It sucks that we’re having to throw hail Mary’s this time of year… we don’t want to do that. But this team is resilient. We weren’t going to give up. The fact of the matter was that we had to fix it and work on it. We just had to try a bunch of stuff and we got the car going in the right direction. I could carry speed and do the things we needed to do there at the end.”

Shane van Gisbergen, No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet

“It was really cool to get a top-10 finish at Kansas Speedway. It was good to do it in a Red Bull car. We’ve had some really cool partners this year and stoked to be able to do it here at Kansas Speedway. I feel like we’re getting better and better at these tracks. It was difficult starting a lap down and having that penalty, but Chais Eliason (interim crew chief) did a great job. We had really good speed at points of the race, so I’m stoked to get a top-10. I thought we got a little better through the day, which was good. We did two on the last stop and tried to get some track position and make something happen, but I sped. I was just trying to be aggressive knowing that I really didn’t have much to lose, but I’m proud of the effort with this backup car and coming from the back. I just made a little mistake.” NEXT WEEK IS NOT AS STRESSFUL SINCE YOU’RE ALREADY IN THE NEXT ROUND. “Yeah. We’ll go have a good weekend and try to win a stage and win the race. I’m proud of the effort from the team all weekend. I never really made it easy on myself to start from Saturday and it’s hard to sit here and say we had speed to contend. A cheap wreck there on the front straightaway and I had to run the last 50 laps without power-steering, so mentally, physically and emotionally I’m very disappointed for the result. He just drives through me and then I was sliding on the wall. I was just mad at that point from how our day was going and this just pissed me off even more because that’s what really hurt was just flipping down the track. It was violent, no doubt, but we had such a fast Speedy Cash Ford today. It’s just a bummer. Right before that caution came out we were gonna have a top 10 day, racing up inside the top 10 a majority of the day and it’s a shame that it has to come to an end out there. I want to give a shout out back to everyone at FRM for bringing another really good car, especially at a mile-and-a-half. Hopefully, five more. Hopefully we bring some more good ones.”
