The record five-time champion of NASCAR's spotlight race at IMS will return to competition onSunday, July 24, at the Crown Royal presents the Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard, filling in for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet SS for Hendrick Motorsports, has not been cleared by physicians to compete in at least the next two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events as he continues to recover from concussion-like symptoms.

“Winning at Indianapolis is definitely one of the goals that I have for our FedEx team, as I’m sure most drivers have. We have some big races in our sport -- Daytona 500, Coke 600, the Southern 500 and the Brickyard. I have been fortunate to win two of those during my career and adding a third this weekend would be special.

Last year at the Brickyard, Ryan Blaney drove the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion from a starting position toward the back of the field (30th) all the way to 12th by the time the checkered flag flew.

"That place is so much fun at times, but just the prestige of it is what makes you walk into that racetrack every time," Allmendinger said. "I don’t care what you’re racing. I’ve been fortunate enough to race the Indy 500, I've raced the Brickyard 400 and did a Sports Car race there. It really doesn’t matter what you’re in. When you walk into that place, a different feeling comes over you."

Tony Stewart: Stewart chased Matt Kenseth to the finish at New Hampshire and score the runner-up finish, his second consecutive top five.

“Racing at Indy is always a special feeling. There is so much history at this track and it really is pretty cool to get to compete here. I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen this weekend.

This will be Almirola's fifth start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His best finish of 17th place came in the 2013 season. Almirola was on track to have a strong finish in last year's race, but contact with another competitor ruined his day. He has a best-starting position of fourth place in 2012.
