Chris Ward Named Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) President as David Hinton Remains on HSR Board of Directors and in Senior Advisor Role

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (January 9, 2024) – Veteran motorsports executive Chris Ward has been named President of Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), taking over the top leadership position of the IMSA-owned vintage and historic sports car racing sanctioning body from David Hinton. The management announcements were made today by IMSA President John Doonan as the organization prepares for this month’s season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 25 – 29, and HSR makes plans for its first event of the year, the Spring Fling at Sebring International Raceway, March 8 – 10.

“We look forward to welcoming Chris Ward, who is already a familiar and close colleague in the paddock, to the IMSA team as HSR President and at the same time couldn’t be happier that David Hinton will continue as an advisor and a member of the HSR Board of Directors,” Doonan said. “The timing of and people involved in this positive change couldn’t be better. David first approached us last year to discuss a succession plan to take place in 2024 for the HSR President position at the same time Chris became available. It all fell into place perfectly as we set the foundation for the next phase of HSR’s growth. It is our intent to continue to focus on the core values that HSR was founded on, which are to grow vintage and historic racing in North America.”

Ward most recently served as Head of Motorsport for Lamborghini North America from 2014 to 2023 where among his vast managerial responsibilities was the oversight of all day-to-day operations of the IMSA-sanctioned Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Series, including sanctioning body coordination, team and customer liaison and acquisition, parts supply chain management and logistics and hospitality operations.

Under Ward’s management and direction, the Super Trofeo series reached unprecedented growth, particularly in recent years. Record fields and capacity grids have been commonplace and new car orders for pending seasons of competition have frequently been early sell outs.

Prior to his tenure at Lamborghini Ward co-founded a successful experiential marketing agency based in Detroit. Its primary focus was marketing, PR and events for luxury brands such as Audi, Bombardier, Bentley Motors, and Breitling.

“It is a huge honor to be asked to steer HSR going forward in this new role,” Ward said. “I’d like to thank Ed Bennett and John Doonan for this tremendous opportunity and of course David Hinton for agreeing to remain as an advisor, guaranteeing a seamless transition for our customer teams and drivers. HSR is on a terrific growth trajectory and I’m so looking forward to being a part of its exciting future.”

Hinton (pictured above) made the decision to step aside as the second anniversary of IMSA’s acquisition of HSR approaches later this month. He served as HSR President for the last 11 years after acquiring majority ownership of the organization in 2012 in partnership with the late George Tuma. Under Hinton’s leadership, HSR has seen its largest growth periods in its more than 40-year history as he guided both the organization’s competition and business operations.

A milestone achievement was the sale of HSR to IMSA that Hinton steered in step with Doonan following Tuma’s passing and the loss of their ownership partner and popular race car driver Jim Pace in late 2020. Hinton also worked with the management of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in bringing HSR in as the sanctioning body for the globally popular Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion historic events beginning in 2021. He will serve as the official HSR representative at the Monterey Reunions in 2024 and remain on the Board of Directors for HSR.

Hinton also continues to operate his longstanding championship and race-winning historic racing team Heritage Motorsports out of Clearwater, Florida.

“While I am leaving my familiar and current role, I am certainly not going away and will continue to have a regular presence in the HSR paddock both as an advisor and running Heritage Motorsports,” Hinton said. “I am also deeply honored to be asked to serve on the HSR Board of Directors, but after 11 years running two companies, my partner in all things Denise and I have decided it is time to slow down. I can’t thank John Doonan, Ed Bennett and everyone at IMSA enough for all of the trust and support over the last few years and look forward to helping Chris Ward all that I can to keep HSR’s solid growth going.

“I hope I have done George and Jim proud – I know they would have been over the moon about the IMSA ownership – and I also want to thank earlier owners and founders Joe Pendergast, Howard Turner, Steve Simpson and Peter McLauglin who were key in making HSR what it is today. It has been a privilege to work with our dedicated HSR staff over the last decade plus – they are the best in the business – and we are all lucky to have such a fantastic group of HSR member competitors who are unwavering supporters and make our jobs enjoyable. I will see you all at Sebring in a couple of months.”

About HSR: An International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) property, Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) was formed in the mid-1970s with an event at Road Atlanta. There was one goal then and it remains true today: to celebrate the race cars from the past. As a “time machine” of sights and sounds, HSR provides a venue for competitors and spectators alike to share in the wonderful history and excitement created by the cars that competed at race tracks around the world. HSR currently sanctions eight vintage and historic racing events at some of the world’s most renowned race tracks, including Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Sebring International Raceway, Daytona International Speedway and more. The complete schedule and full event information can be found on HSR’s website at www.HSRRace.com. iRacing, INDYCAR Sign Multiyear License Agreement

Includes Rights to INDYCAR SERIES, Return of iRacing Indianapolis 500

INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024) – iRacing and INDYCAR are pleased to announce a multiyear licensing agreement – officially reuniting the two legendary brands.

The relationship, which dates back more than a dozen years, also includes Indianapolis Motor Speedway – and the return of the hugely popular iRacing Indianapolis 500 – to the gaming format’s Special Events calendar. This annual event has historically drawn thousands of participants, who race in a virtual version of the world’s most iconic race, known for its 200 laps of pure speed at the “Racing Capital of the World.” The community event allows sim racers from around the world to get a taste of what it is like to race at the famous oval at the Brickyard.

The return of a license has been highly anticipated by iRacing members and INDYCAR SERIES fans alike.

“The INDYCAR SERIES and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are racing properties that need to be included in iRacing,” iRacing President Tony Gardner said. “There is no better way for fans to experience sim racing than on iRacing, and whether it’s the INDYCAR SERIES’ Indy 500, NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 or IMSA’s Battle on the Bricks, there is nothing like racing at Indianapolis. I am so pleased to be able to bring these events back to the iRacing community.”

In addition to the rebranding of INDYCAR SERIES events on iRacing, members will have access to series content for private events and leagues.

“We are very excited that our most avid gamers and fans will have full access to the INDYCAR SERIES through this licensing agreement with iRacing,” said Ben Hendricks, INDYCAR senior manager, eSports & emerging virtual experiences. “They are longtime partners, and we look forward to official INDYCAR SERIES racing on iRacing for many years to come.”

The new license agreement between iRacing and INDYCAR includes more provisions than previous iterations, allowing more flexibility to run events and series. Highlights include:

  • Return of the iRacing Indianapolis 500
  • INDYCAR SERIES branding of series on iRacing
  • Multiple leagues to run INDYCAR SERIES events on iRacing
  • License extension of Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The licensing agreement goes into effect immediately, and iRacing members will see the rebranding of series, cars and events over the coming days. Details of the iRacing Indianapolis 500 will be available later this month.

Seventy-Four Drivers, 39 Cars on ARCA Menards Series Pre-race Practice at Daytona Entry List

TEMPERANCE, Mich. (January 9, 2024 – Seventy-four drivers spread across 39 cars have been entered for the upcoming Pre-race Practice for the ARCA Menards Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

Headlined by Australian superstar Shane Van Gisbergen, who won the NASCAR Cup Series first-ever street course race in his series debut in 2022, and Indycar star Marco Andretti, the grandson of 1967 Daytona 500 winner and 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti, the entry list also includes defending race winner Greg Van Alst and a slew of drivers chasing the 2024 series championship.

Last year’s series runner-up Andres Perez returns in 2024 looking to make his first start at Daytona. Perez was just shy of his 18th birthday last season and was not permitted to start the race due to age restrictions. He’ll be joined by his Rev Racing teammate Lavar Scott, who finished fourth in his series debut at Daytona last February and has indicated he will also pursue the 2024 series championship.

Kris Wright has teamed with Venturini Motorsports for a full season run in 2024, while Christian Rose will return to AM Racing as he makes his second run at the title. Bounty Rookie Challenge contender Caleb Costner will chase after the title with his self-owned Costner-Weaver Motorsports team, and Tonawanda, New York native Andy Jankowiak has also indicated he will pursue the championship with the Kevin Lapierre and Andy Suess-owned KLAS Motorsports team.

William Sawalich and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular Taylor Gray will share driving duties in the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota over the course of the weekend. Sawalich, the 2023 ARCA Menards Series East champion, will make his first laps at Daytona in the practice but like Perez last year, he will not participate in the race due to age restrictions.

Wright will be joined in the Venturini Motorsports fleet by Jake Finch, Amber Balcaen, Toni Breidinger, and Gus Dean. Balcaen finished a career-best sixth at Daytona last season, and Dean is a former winner at Talladega Superspeedway. Breidinger closed her partial 2023 season with seven top-ten finishes in her last eight starts, including four in the top five with her best a third at Kansas Speedway in September. Finch, who won the ARCA Menards Series East race at Dover Motor Speedway last April, will look to make his first career start at Daytona; his father James Finch was the winning team owner at Daytona in both 1993 and 1996 with Jeff Purvis driving.

Perennial superspeedway contender Sean Corr, who finished third last season, is also entered as is last year’s fifth-place finisher Mandy Chick, who returns with her family-owned team. NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour standout Patrick Emerling is entered as the driver of his self-owned Emerling Motorsports Ford. Emerling’s team finished 14th in last year’s race with former Daytona pole winner Natalie Decker driving. Willie Mullins, who finished second in 2018, is also entered along with Michigan’s Scott Melton, who will shake down a pair of Fords prepared by former championship-winning crew chief and car owner Bill Kimmel.

Former ARCA Menards Series East Bounty Rookie of the Year Leland Honeyman will take to the track with Youngs Motorsports, the team he will run the full NASCAR Xfinity Series season with in 2024. Carson Kvapil, a two-time CARS Tour champion, will also participate in the weekend’s activities.

Andy Hillenburg’s Fast Track High Performance Racing Team has entered five cars for the pre-race practice, which will be shared by 13 different drivers.

NASCAR legend Geoff Bodine to release autobiography in February

Former Daytona 500 champion and 18-time NASCAR Cup Series winner Geoff Bodine’s book will be officially released, “All of It: Daytona 500 Champion Tells the Rest of the Story” on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

The autobiography, written in collaboration with Dominic Aragon, takes a closer look at Bodine’s life from growing up in New York to aspirations of competing in the Daytona 500, his life as a professional racecar driver, his faith and more.

“My book will help teach the non-race fan about auto racing, and for all readers,” Bodine said. “It will show how true faith in God and accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior might give them a miracle when they need one.”

Bodine competed in NASCAR’s top division from 1979 to 2011. During that span, Bodine raced for legendary car owners, competed for championships, won the sport’s biggest race, had a fierce rivalry with the late Dale Earnhardt, competed as an owner-driver following the death of Alan Kulwicki, and survived a fiery crash in a NASCAR Truck Series race at Daytona.

The book’s cover image features an original rendering of Bodine’s No. 5 ride from Hendrick Motorsports, while the back cover shows an image of Bodine in a fire suit pointing to the back of his helmet, which reads “In God We Trust.”

The forward is written by Rick Hendrick, the legendary owner of Hendrick Motorsports, who selected Bodine to be his first driver.

Aragon, editor-in-chief of The Racing Experts, teamed up with Bodine to tell this important series of stories as a way to teach readers about the history of the sport.

“It has been an absolute honor to work with Geoff on this project,” Aragon said. “Of all the people he could have worked on this story, he chose me and I am forever grateful I could have a small hand in helping Geoff tell ‘All of It.’ This book is truly a missing piece of NASCAR history, and I think readers will surely enjoy it.”

Bodine and Aragon teamed up with Trilogy Christian Publishing, the publishing arm of Trinity Broadcast Network, to publish this autobiography.

“Geoff Bodine has had an amazing life that goes well beyond NASCAR, and we are so excited to publish his first book here at TBN,” said Mark Mingle, Acquisitions Executive at Trilogy Christian Publishing. “In addition, Geoff is open about his faith in a way that is very real and authentic, and Dominic Aragon was the catalyst in putting all the pieces together for the project. We are honored to have both men in the TBN family.”

The book will retail for $24.99 and it will be available at major book retail stores, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
