Notes of Interest

● Saturday Night Under the Lights: The NASCAR Cup Series is heading back to the World Center of Racing this weekend for a Saturday-night race under the lights – the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. It will be the conclusion of the regular season with everything on the line for the drivers below the 16-driver playoff cutline, which includes Ryan Preece, driver of the No. 41 RaceChoice.com Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR).

● By The Numbers: Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 marks Preece’s eighth Cup Series start on the 2.5-mile Daytona oval. His first was in 2019 for JTG-Daugherty Racing, when he finished eighth in that year’s season-opening Daytona 500. Best among his seven Cup Series starts at Daytona was a fourth-place finish from the 24th starting position in the August 2021 race. He has three top-10s in all. Preece also has three Xfinity Series start at Daytona. The first two were in 2016 for JD Motorsports. In 2018, hestarted on the pole for Joe Gibbs Racing but had to retire from the race early due to an overheating issue.

● Welcome to the Team, RaceChoice.com: RaceChoice, a longstanding partner of Preece, will be the primary partner on the No. 41 SHR Ford Mustang this weekend. Preece and his racecar will sport a teal-and-pink, Miami vibes wrap appropriate for a race in the Sunshine State in showcasing RaceChoice’s first time as a primary partner in a NASCAR Cup Series race. ● Last Weekend: Preece and the No. 41 team started 30th and finished 17th Sunday on the seven-turn, 2.45-mile Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International road course. The 90-lap race had only one caution for four laps, making it all the more difficult for Preece and his team to work their way further to the front using strategy.

● Where He Stands: Preece heads to Daytona 24th in the driver standings with 423 points.

● VIP Race Day Experience: RaceChoice.com, a proud partner of Preece, has launched its second VIP race day experience giveaway for fans this season. Fans can enter through Sept. 30. The winner will receive airfare and a two-night stay in Phoenix for the season-ending Championship 4 race weekend. You’re heading back to Daytona this weekend for another superspeedway race, but this time it’s an evening race. Are you looking forward to the challenge?

“I am looking forward to it. Superspeedways have been really good for us and our organization as a whole. I haven’t been on the good side when the wrecks have happened, but from being aggressive, being able to push and having speed, SHR and Fords have been really strong. It creates a really good opportunity for the weekend and we’re looking forward to it.”

Do you consider this weekend at Daytona, along with the upcoming superspeedway and short-track races, your best chance to get a win?

“I think everyone has seen it, but our short track stuff has been really, really good. We saw that at Martinsville, we saw that at Richmond. Now, we’re going to tracks for the second time and I feel like we’re starting to see that positive progression. Our superspeedway stuff has been strong, too. Daytona, Talladega, if we weren’t swept up in other wrecks, we would have had good days. The speed is there. I’m looking forward to Bristol and Martinsville and I’m looking forward to Daytona and the Talladega because we’ve seen how good we can be there.”

You’ve got RaceChoice.com on your Ford Mustang this weekend. They’ve been a partner of yours for a long time and they’ve got a pretty cool paint scheme for Daytona. What’s your excitement level with RaceChoice.com on your car?
“Yeah, definitely excited to have RaceChoice.com on my No. 41 Ford Mustang this weekend. The paint scheme is pretty sweet, too, so no one will be missing us out there. RaceChoice has been a huge supporter of mine over the years and my racing career. I have a really good relationship with them, and it means a lot to me that they’ve stuck with me all these years. RaceChoice.com has been growing over the years and their website is the place to go for merchandise, safety gear and car parts. It’s worth it for any racer, race fan or car enthusiast to check out. I’m excited to get the teal-and-pink car to Daytona this weekend and I think we’ll have a really good night.”

● Location: Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway

● Layout: 2.5-mile oval

● Stage Lengths: Stage 1: 40 laps / Stage 2: 40 laps / Final Stage: 80 laps

● TV/Radio: NBC / MRN Radio / SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Notes of Interest

● Chase Briscoe, driver of the No. 14 Magical Vacation Planner Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing, heads to Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway for one last shot at making the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. The regular-season finale marks Briscoe’s sixth Cup Series start at Daytona. His best finish of third on the 2.5-mile oval came in the 2022 Daytona 500, the first race for the NextGen racecar.

● The Coke Zero Sugar 400 will be the third superspeedway race of the year. The most recent was four months ago at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, where Briscoe drove to a fourth-place finish. It was his third consecutive top-five finish during a streak that included a fifth-place finish in the dirt race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and a fourth-place result at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

● Briscoe owns five NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Daytona with two top-fives earned and a best result of third in the August 2020 race.

● He also made one Daytona start each in the NASCAR Truck Series and the ARCA Menards Series. Briscoe finished third in the 2017 Truck Series race and fourth in the 2016 ARCA race.

Chase Briscoe, Driver of the No. 14 Magical Vacation Planner Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

Last year, you were headed to the August Daytona race already locked into the playoffs. Talk about the difference in preparation for a Daytona race that is your last shot at making this year’s 16-driver playoff lineup.

“It’s a big difference. You go in knowing that you want to do anything you can to put yourself in position to win and take your team into the playoffs, but there are going to be a lot of other guys with the same plan. You want to win every race, but maybe if we had already done that, we’d go into this one a little more focused on winning a stage, picking up playoff points, or something like that. Daytona is already a tough race to prepare for. Anything can happen and it makes it tough to stick to a specific strategy. We’ve done well there, so I know we are capable, it’s just going to come down to a lot of good luck and no mistakes on our part to even have a shot at being in position at the end. From there, anything can happen.”

This year’s first Daytona race didn’t end well after you were caught up in an accident with less than 20 laps to go, but you recovered well to finish fourth in the next superspeedway race at Talladega. Does that Talladega finish boost confidence that you can get yourself into that position at the end?

“Yeah, I think so. We were executing really well at Daytona before that wreck took us out, and then we went to Talladega and were able to stick it out until the end and come out with a good finish. So, that’s why I say I know we are capable. Unfortunately, a lot of what happens will probably be out of our control, but I think we’ll show up with a fast car and we know the Fords usually do really well on the superspeedways.”

Hocevar on Last Race at Indianapolis Raceway Park: “A good run at IRP is a great way to start the Playoffs because it gives us the confidence we need as we continue our championship hunt. This Week in Motorsports: August 21-28, 2023

· NCS/NXS: Daytona International Speedway – August 25-26
· NCTS/ARCA: The Milwaukee Mile – August 27

PLANO, Texas (August 23, 2023) – The NASCAR Cup Series closes its regular season at Daytona International Speedway this weekend, where they are joined by the NASCAR Xfinity Series. On Sunday, the NASCAR Truck Series returns to the Milwaukee Mile along with the ARCA Menards Series.

NASCAR National Series – NCS | NXS | NCTS

Mobility Pit Box makes its debut… Following Toyota’s mission of ‘Mobility for All,’ Toyota will debut a mobility pit box in Daytona with Team Toyota Olympian Alise Willoughby and her husband, Sam, among those to first experience it. The Mobility Pit Box, which was designed to fit within the NASCAR-regulated pit box, can hold up to three wheelchairs along with three additional guests and two staff members. It features a climate assist for the guests, along with television monitors for the guests to follow along. In the spirit of Mobility for all, Toyota will open this experience to all NASCAR Industry partners and sponsors who sign up to utilize this unique addition for their guests during race weekends.

Truex, Hamlin fighting for regular season title… We know a Toyota driver will earn the regular season championship as Martin Truex Jr. comes into Daytona leading teammate Denny Hamlin by 39 points. Hamlin has had more success at Daytona – earning all three of Toyota’s Daytona 500 wins (2016, 2019, 2020), while Truex looks for his first superspeedway win. Since the trophy was first presented in 2017, this will be Toyota’s fourth time earning it (Truex – 2017, Kyle Busch – 2018, 2019).

Wallace, Gibbs battling for final Playoff berth… Bubba Wallace and Ty Gibbs are both striving for the final Playoff berth this weekend. Wallace sits in the 16th and final Playoff berth, with a 32-point advantage over the rookie driver. Daytona has been a great track for Wallace, as the Alabama-native has earned three second-place finishes. Gibbs has two starts in the Cup Series at Daytona – with a track-best 13th-place finish in this race one season ago.

Nemechek wants to be one spot better… John Hunter Nemechek started the season with a strong runner-up finish at Daytona. Nemechek is now in tight battle for the Xfinity Series regular season title, trailing Austin Hill by just nine points coming into this weekend. Nemechek won the last superspeedway-style event at Atlanta Motor Speedway last month.

Mosack plans to follow first top-five with another good run… Connor Mosack delivered his first top-five finish at Watkins Glen on Saturday as he led Toyota with a fifth-place run. Mosack will be making his Daytona Xfinity debut but had a strong runner-up finish in the ARCA race earlier this season after winning the pole and leading 25 laps.

Heim looks to clinch Round of 8 position… Corey Heim continued his impressive season with his 10th consecutive top-10 finish at Indianapolis Raceway Park the last time the Trucks were on track. The regular season champion boasts of 14 top-10 finishes in 16 races and a 7.1 average finish – both which lead the series. The Toyota development driver looks to clinch his Round of 8 berth in Milwaukee. He holds a 47-point advantage over the Playoff cut off. Heim has one ARCA start at the track – a sixth-place finish in 2021.

Sawalich double duty… William Sawalich will run two races in the same day as the 16-year-old is scheduled to compete in both the ARCA Menards Series and NASCAR Truck Series races at Milwaukee. Sawalich did the same at the Truck Series’ last event in Indianapolis – earning top-10 finishes in both races, including a career-best sixth in his Tundra.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA

Love continues ARCA domination… Jesse Love heads into the Milwaukee Mile with a dominant lead in the point standings. The Toyota development driver won his fourth straight race at Watkins Glen on Friday before finishing third on Sunday at the Springfield Mile. The 18-year-old has now scored 12 consecutive top-five finishes, including eight wins in the series. It will be his third ARCA start at Milwaukee where he finished seventh in both 2021 and 2022.

Driver Quotes

“Although these road courses have been a blast, I am super excited to get back to a superspeedway, especially Daytona. We ran strong here back in February and thought we really had it on the last lap there. It was a learning opportunity for me and I am ready to take all I have learned back to Daytona and hopefully be able to contend for the win and stay off my roof this time.” – Sam Mayer

“Daytona is a place where anything can, and usually does, happen. It will be intense right from the drop of the green flag and hopefully we will be able to avoid any potential trouble out there and be up front when it counts with our Hellmann’s Chevrolet. We had an unbelievably strong car here in February and I know that Jim (Pohlman, crew chief) and all the guys on this No. 7 team will have just as good a car for me on Friday night. JRM has always been extremely good on the superspeedways and hopefully all four of us will be able to work together all night long and be fighting for the win together in the end.” – Justin Allgaier

“It will be nice to get back to Daytona this weekend, making it a double with Bass Pro Shops on the car like we had in the spring. We’ve been running really well lately, but just can’t seem to catch a break in the late stages. JRM is usually really good at Daytona as a whole, so hopefully we can avoid any disaster this weekend and put ourselves in a position towards the end of the race to battle for a win.” – Josh Berry

“The JRM cars in Daytona to start the year were all really good. If we can all get with each other and work together, I think we will be the cars to beat. With only a few races left until the playoffs, we need to be a little more aggressive this weekend to put ourselves in a spot to potentially lock ourselves in. I know we will have a fast Menards/Fisher Nuts Chevrolet, we just need to avoid the carnage and give ourselves a shot at the end.” – Brandon Jones

Daytona also ranks as the winningest track in the NXS for the organization with the last win coming during the 2020 season.
  • Souvenir Rig: JRM drivers Justin Allgaier, Sam Mayer and Brandon Jones will be signing autographs at the JR Motorsports / Legacy MC souvenir rig on Friday, Aug. 25 from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This will be the Final Season for Multi-Time Championship Winning Team GMS Racing

STATESVILLE, NC (August 23rd, 2023) – This morning, GMS Racing officials announced it will cease operations at the conclusion of the 2023 race season. GMS Fabrication, a separate entity which has operated alongside the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) race team, will also close its doors following the championship race at Phoenix Raceway.

”During the past nine years, GMS Racing has become one of the top teams in the Truck and ARCA Series garage. The people that made this happen have been the hard-working men and women at GMS Racing and GMS Fabrication. Every employee, new and old at GMS has always strived to be the very best,” said Maury Gallagher. “Without their effort and dedication, we would have never been able to win two Truck championships, three ARCA championships and 68 wins. Leadership is always critical in any success story. Since 2015, Mike Beam has been the catalyst of this race team’s success. Chevrolet and GM has also been critical to our success. With the combination of Chevrolet plus Mike at the helm, we became the team I always dreamed of owning. I can’t thank Mike enough for all his leadership and hard work. We are looking to finish out this year on a high note and close our legacy in this era with another Truck Series championship.”

GMS Racing, or as it was formerly known as Gallagher Motorsports, was founded by entrepreneur and CEO of Allegiant Travel Company, Maury Gallagher, in 2012. Initially competing in the ARCA Menards Series with Gallagher’s son, Spencer Gallagher, as the team’s primary driver, the team fielded the No. 23 as a tribute to Spencer Clark, a young driver from Las Vegas who tragically passed away at the beginning of his career in 2006. In 2013, the team grew to include part-time operations of a NCTS race team, in which Gallagher would compete in three races.

In 2014, the then-renamed GMS Racing began full-time in the Truck Series, partnering with Joey Coulter. The team also expanded its ARCA program, fielding two cars for Spencer and Grant Enfinger. Enfinger won the first race at Berlin Raceway for Gallagher as Team Owner. Spencer finished the year by winning the season finale at Kansas Speedway. Enfinger would finish runner up in the points in his first full-time season competing in ARCA.

2015 would be a banner year for the race team, as Gallagher joined forces with one of the most respected names in motorsports, Mike Beam. Mike joined as Team President, a position he still holds today. He oversaw the race team and GMS Fabrication’s efforts. The year started off with a bang, as Ty Dillon won the team’s first pole award in the Truck Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway. The team’s first truck win was soon in hand as Austin Dillion won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, solidifying their spot as a race-winning organization on a national level. Enfinger was on a tear in the ARCA Menards Series, winning a total of three poles and a division-high six races en route to winning the series championship, a remarkable feat for Beam and the crew members associated with GMS.

Coming off the ARCA Menards Series championship, GMS Racing wanted more. In addition to the ARCA Series, GMS upped its game in its Truck efforts in 2016, fielding two full-time entries for Gallagher and Johnny Sauter, along with two part-time trucks split between several drivers. Race wins were plentiful that year, as Kyle Larson, Ben Kennedy, and Grant Enfinger would each score Truck Series victories. Sauter won three races of his own and captured the series championship, checking off a monumental accomplishment for the still relatively new race team. This would make it two championship seasons in a row for Beam and Gallagher, further emphasizing that this team was on the pathway to building a legacy.

The 2017 season saw the team go full-time Xfinity Series racing with Spencer, in addition to a part-time second car. The Truck Series operations expanded yet again, this time making it three full-time entries with Sauter, Kaz Grala, and Justin Haley, along with a fourth truck that ran three times. Six wins would be earned by the team; one each by Grala and Chase Elliott, and four by Sauter, who fell one spot short of defending his title, finishing second overall.

In 2018, Spencer Gallagher would earn both his and GMS Racing’s first Xfinity Series win at Talladega Superspeedway. Later that year he announced he was stepping away from driving to take on a managerial role within the team. It would be one of the organization’s most formidable years in the Truck Series, fielding four full-time trucks that combined to win 10 races. Six of those races were won by Sauter, three by Haley, and one by Timothy Peters. Sauter advanced to the Championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, ultimately finishing fourth in points.

The following season in 2019 saw John Hunter Nemechek take over the reins of the GMS Xfinity Series car, finishing seventh in the points standings. The Truck Series operations would shrink to two full-time trucks driven by Sheldon Creed and Brett Moffitt, who won four races, along with an additional part-time truck. GMS started an ARCA East entry driven by Sam Mayer, who won four races on his way to the series championship in his rookie season. At the conclusion of 2019, the decision was made to exit the Xfinity Series and focus more on driver development in Trucks and ARCA.

Arguably the most successful season throughout the team’s history was 2020. Its drivers combined to win 19 races across three series. The Truck Series fielded five full-time teams with drivers Creed, Moffitt, Zane Smith, and Tyler Ankrum competing for the championship, and a rotation of drivers in the fifth truck. This combination racked up 10 wins, five by Creed, two by Smith, one each by Moffitt, Chase Elliott and Sam Mayer. Heading into the championship race at Phoenix Raceway, GMS qualified for three of the four championship contenders places and finished the year with a remarkable 1-2-3 finish, led by Creed, who won the organization’s second Truck Series championship. Mayer continued to dominate the ARCA Menards Series East, boasting an unheard-of 80% win ratio with five wins in six races, cruising to the championship. He also won one time in ARCA West, driving a special paint scheme that honored the late Spencer Clark in front of Clark’s hometown Las Vegas.

GMS Racing once again fielded five full-time trucks in 2021 for Creed, Smith, Ankrum, and Chase Purdy. The fifth was split by multiple drivers, coupled along with a part-time ARCA entry. The Truck team won a total of four races – Creed won three races while Smith brought home one checkered flag. Smith advanced to the final round of the playoffs for the second year in a row, finishing second in points. Daniel Dye won his first, and the team’s final ARCA win at Berlin Raceway, fittingly book-ending the team’s series wins at the same racetrack.

Gallagher announced in late 2021 that he would field a NASCAR Cup Series in 2022, purchasing controlling interest in Richard Petty Motorsports. The new team, Petty GMS, began competing in 2022 in tandem with the Truck Series teams.

Last year saw the team transition to two full-time trucks driven by Grant Enfinger and Jack Wood along with a full-time ARCA entry for Dye. Enfinger would win once that season, and Dye finished runner up in the ARCA championship and was named ARCA’s Rookie of the Year. He would later make the jump up to the Truck Series heading this season. 2022 was the finale for GMS Racing’s ARCA team.

This season, GMS welcomed rookie drivers Dye and Rajah Caruth to its Truck Series roster in addition to Enfinger, returning to form and contending for wins throughout the year. Wins at Kansas Speedway and World Wide Technology Raceway solidified Enfinger as one of the threats poised to win the 2023 Truck Series championship. The latest victory, win number 44 in the Truck Series, positioned the team as the overall winningest Chevrolet organization within the series. With six races remaining in the year, all three drivers will look to add fuel to the legacy of one of the most successful organizations in NCTS history.

“I just want to start off by saying how grateful I am for Maury (Gallagher) and these incredible nine years at GMS Racing. A lot of people, including myself, have poured their hearts and souls into this organization to make it where it’s at today. Our success wouldn’t have been possible without the talented drivers, crew members, fabricators and administrators that have walked through our doors over the years,” responded Mike Beam. “I also want to thank Chevrolet. Chevrolet has been such a key partner of ours over our entire existence. They have been along for every success GMS has obtained and we couldn’t have done it without their support. As for the rest of this year, we will continue business as usual and chase after a Championship in our final season.”

While the ending of an era with the closing of the race team is undeniably a difficult circumstance, bright futures lie ahead. Heading into 2024, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB™ Co-Owners Maury Gallagher and Jimmie Johnson look to strengthen the team on all fronts with their NASCAR Cup Series efforts to become a force to be reckoned with for years to come. #WeAreGMS
