Mobil 1 Racing: Kevin Harvick Richmond Advance

KEVIN HARVICK
Richmond Advance
No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

Event Overview

● Event: Federated Auto Parts 400 (Round 24 of 36)
● Time/Date: 3 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 14
● Location: Richmond (Va.) Raceway
● Layout: .75-mile oval
● Laps/Miles: 400 laps/300 miles
● Stage Lengths: Stage 1: 70 laps / Stage 2: 160 laps / Final Stage: 170 laps
● TV/Radio: USA / MRN / SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Notes of Interest

● As Kevin Harvick strides to his No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Mustang this weekend at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, those in the garage will see the veteran racer walking a little taller. Harvick is the NASCAR Cup Series’ most recent victor. He won last Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn to score his 59th career victory, his first of the season and his series-leading sixth at Michigan. It also punched Harvick’s ticket to the NASCAR Playoffs, as he became the 15th different winner this year to secure his spot in the 16-driver playoff field.

● Richmond marks the third-to-last race of the regular season before the NASCAR Playoffs begin Sept. 4 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. Drivers who have won a race earn a playoff berth, and never in the history of the playoffs (2004 to present) have there been enough winners to fill out the entire playoff field. In 2022, however, history could be rewritten. As the 15th different winner this season, Harvick’s victory meant that only the 16th and final spot is available, a position currently held by Ryan Blaney, who is second in regular-season in points but has not yet won a race this season. If there is another new winner not named Blaney, that winner will take the 16th and final playoff spot and bounce Blaney from playoff contention. But wait, there’s more! With two regular-season races still remaining after Richmond – Aug. 21 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International and Aug. 27 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway – there is the possibility of even more new winners this season. What happens in this scenario? The winning driver lowest in points gets bounced from the playoffs. Harvick is currently ninth in the regular-season standings ahead of fellow playoff drivers William Byron, Alex Bowman, Tyler Reddick, Daniel Suárez, Chase Briscoe, Austin Cindric, Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch. Harvick’s margin over Busch is 133 points. Harvick also holds a 94-point advantage over Hamlin and an 87-point edge over Cindric. The maximum amount of points any one driver can earn in a single race is 60 (40 points for the win and 10 points for winning the first or second stage).

● Speaking of winning, with his victory at Michigan, Harvick has now won in 18 of his 22 NASCAR Cup Series seasons. His first victory was on March 11, 2001 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Harvick has 59 career Cup Series wins, 28 of which have come since he turned 40. Now, the 46-year-old Harvick is 10th on the series’ all-time win list, and with his last 24 victories being with Ford, Harvick is also 10th on Ford’s all-time win list, where he is one of only 13 drivers to win 20 more races with the manufacturer.

● Harvick has made 777 career NASCAR Cup Series starts, with 125 of those starts coming on short tracks. And of his 59 Cup Series wins, seven have been on short tracks, with Richmond accounting for three of those victories. Harvick scored his first Richmond win in September 2006, his second in September 2011 and his third in April 2013.

● Harvick joined Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in 2014 and has since recorded 36 of his 59 career NASCAR Cup Series wins. However, none of them have been at Richmond. But Harvick has remained stout at the .75-mile oval. In his last 16 starts at Richmond as a member of SHR, Harvick has three runner-up finishes, nine top-fives and 12 top-10s. He has only one finish outside of the top-15.

● Harvick comes into Richmond with back-to-back top-10s in his last two NASCAR Cup Series starts at the track. He finished eighth in last year’s Federated Auto Parts 400 and second in the series’ return to Richmond in April.

● Harvick leads all active NASCAR Cup Series drivers in top-10s at Richmond. The driver of the No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Mustang has 28 top-10s in 42 career starts (66.7 percent). Next best is Kyle Busch with 26 top-10s.

● Harvick has led 15,833 total laps in his NASCAR Cup Series career, with 1,180 of those laps coming at Richmond.

● The Federated Auto Parts 400 will mark Harvick’s 43rd NASCAR Cup Series start at the Virginia short track. His first start at Richmond came on May 5, 2001. That race was won by SHR co-owner Tony Stewart, who beat then three-time champion Jeff Gordon by .372 of a second. Harvick finished 17th in what was his 10th career Cup Series start. Ten of the 43 drivers in that race have since been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame – Stewart, Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Bobby Labonte, Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett, Ron Hornaday Jr., Bill Elliott and Terry Labonte.

● Harvick is the winningest NASCAR Xfinity Series driver at Richmond with seven victories. Kyle Busch is next best with six wins. Harvick finished among the top-10 in all but six of his 21 career Xfinity Series starts at Richmond.

● The Mobil 1 branding on Harvick’s No. 4 Ford Mustang goes more than skin deep as the world’s leading synthetic motor oil brand gives Harvick an added advantage. Mobil 1 products are used throughout his racecar and they extend beyond just engine oil. Power steering fluid, transmission fluid, gear oil and driveline lubricants from Mobil 1 give Harvick a technical advantage over his counterparts by reducing friction, heat and rolling resistance.Mobil 1 is a sponsor whose technology makes Harvick’s No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Mustang faster.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Mustang

You enjoyed a strong second-place finish at Richmond when we raced there in early April. What allowed you to secure that result?

“You’d like to be close enough to at least give yourself a chance. There at the end, we just kind of got jumbled up in traffic and never really got a chance to be close enough to make something happen. The team did a good job making a good pit call and our Mobil 1 Ford Mustang was pretty decent all weekend.”

Did the NextGen car unload at Richmond fairly similarly to how you used to unload with the previous generation car, or were there some nuances that were specific to the NextGen car that you had to get used to?

“There were definitely some differences with the car just the way that it drove and it felt and the things that you did, but it was still the same basic line of driving, and the things that happened during the race with the tire falloff were pretty standard.”

You won last Sunday at Michigan. After developing the NextGen car and finally getting that coveted victory, what has this car been like to get it to where you want it to be?

“It’s all totally different. I think after the Roval test last year, I knew not to have any expectations for this year. We were either going to be on the front side of this thing or we were going to be behind. There wasn’t going to really be any middle road. We found out we were behind and had to start really going to work, and I think as you look at this particular car, everything about it is different. You’ve got an electronic mirror, which I love, because it’s just so easy to use, right in your line of sight, you don’t have to move your eyes as far. But when you talk about stuff like that, you have to be very open-minded to, just, change. For me, I was prepared for change. I was prepared for work. We had a pretty extensive plan this year of using the simulator and trying to make it better, to make it fit with what we do at the racetrack with the short practices.”

What have the challenges been?

“It’s been challenging trying to get the cars up to speed, but there’s also been a factor of it being kind of fun because we talk about things – and we use the pedals as an example – we literally just got my pedals to where I can function inside the racecar about four or five weeks ago. I hated the gas pedal. I hated the brake pedal. It all feels different and, honestly, I put red grease on the bottom of my shoe every week, and it’s like the greatest thing ever because my foot will now slide on this clunky gas pedal and work like it used to. It’s just working through stuff like that. The steering is different, the mirrors are different, the pedals are different, the things that you talk about to make the car work are different. We went from back of the car being up to the front of the car up. Everything is just different, and you have this constant evolution of things that are happening.”

We’re back racing at a short track and you’re a fan of short tracks. Recently, another short track roared back to life, quite literally. What were your thoughts of seeing grassroots racing return to North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway?

“I think it caught everybody off guard how many people actually showed up to watch the Modified race. The people from the community showed up and, hopefully, they’ll keep showing up and keep participating in the event because it’s a cool facility. There’s just something about those old, nostalgic facilities that you can go back to and kind of go back in time. It’ll still be great when it’s repaved, but it still won’t be like it will be for this next month-and-a-half.”

Could a national NASCAR touring series race ever return to North Wilkesboro?

“I don’t know why you’d go through all that work and not have something like that there. That would be ludicrous to think that that track was going to survive on just Late Models and Modifieds, Saturday-night shows. There’s no way. There’s got to be some sort of plan for Truck or Xfinity or something that goes into that. There’s a lot of work that would need to be done there. I don’t know the workload, but we need more of those types of facilities. There’s just way more that goes into it than just saying that I think it’d be great to go there. I don’t dare say that because it’s not like a safety-item opinion that I have. That’s a business that would have to have lots and lots of money and infrastructure. But I think the short tracks, all of us who are old enough to have lived through this phase of mile-and-a-half tracks and getting rid of the short tracks, and now we’re back at ‘get rid of the mile-and-a-halves and get back to short tracks and road courses.’ So it’s a cycle that North Wilkesboro has fortunately survived through that I think it’ll still be in the conversation. It’s still close to Martinsville, it’s still close to Charlotte and Bristol, so there’s way more that goes into that equation. But for Trucks and Xfinity, it would be a no-brainer for those series, for sure. And it’s going to be way faster when they repave it, so it’s not going to be like it is now.”

NASCAR CUP SERIES RACE #24 – RICHMOND

Only three races remain in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) regular season, each of which will be contested on three completely different track configurations: a short track, road course and superspeedway. First up on the final push to the end of the regular season is the .75-mile, D-shaped oval of Richmond Raceway. Sunday’s Federated Auto Parts 400 will mark the series’ return to short track competition for the first time since April. While this is the second appearance of the season by NASCAR’s premier series at Richmond, this weekend will be the first-ever summer race weekend in the series’ history at the Virginia venue.

The spring race at Richmond Raceway saw Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron lead the charge for the bowtie brigade, driving his No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to a third-place finish. Three other Chevrolet drivers where in tow to give the Camaro ZL1 four top-10 finishes, including Byron’s teammates Kyle Larson (fifth) and Alex Bowman (eighth); and Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 team in 10th.

Richmond Raceway has hosted the NCS 131 times since the track’s inaugural event in 1953, with a Chevrolet-powered machine taking the victory a manufacturer-leading 39 times. Of those wins includes a streak of six consecutives triumphs, dating from May 2006 to September 2008. That string of victories performed by four different Chevrolet drivers holds the series’ record for the longest streak of consecutive wins at the track. The bowtie’s most recent victory at the track came in April 2021, where Alex Bowman recorded the first of his career-high four wins on the season.

NCWTS ROUND OF 10: RACE TWO

Looking to continue the manufacturer’s momentum as the series’ most recent winner, Chevrolet drivers and teams of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) are back in action this weekend, joining the NASCAR Cup Series for a doubleheader race weekend at Richmond Raceway. Taking the green under the lights on Saturday night, the Worldwide Express 250 for Carrier Appreciation marks the second of three races in the NCWTS Round of 10, giving the playoff field another opportunity to win and advance to the next round to continue the chase to the title.

Grant Enfinger and the No. 23 GMS Racing Silverado RST team heads into the race weekend as the only team with a guaranteed spot into the NCWTS Round of Eight following their win at the playoff opener at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. Chevrolet’s other playoff contender, Carson Hocevar, will head to Richmond seven points above the playoff cutline. 2022 marks just the second full-time season for the 19-year-old Niece Motorsports driver, with Hocevar racing his way into the coveted playoff field in both seasons. In 17 NCWTS races this season Hocevar has recorded six top-fives, including three in a row in recent events (Nashville – third; Mid-Ohio – third; Pocono – fifth).

The single appearance by the NCWTS at Richmond this season will be the 14th race in the series’ history at the track. The Virginia short track first hosted the series in 1995, with Terry Labonte driving the No. 5 Chevrolet for team owner Rick Hendrick to victory lane in the inaugural event. In the series’ 13 races at the track, Chevrolet has captured six of those victories to lead all manufacturers.

Notable entries into the NCWTS field this weekend includes Rajah Caruth, who will be back behind the wheel of the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Silverado RST. The 20-year-old Chevrolet driver made his NCWTS debut with the team earlier this season at World Wide Technology Raceway, piloting the Chevrolet-powered machine to a strong 11th-place finish. His second career NCWTS start will come at a track that holds a special place in Caruth’s young racing career, with Richmond Raceway also being the venue where he made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut back in April.

NXS PLAYOFF PICTURE: FIVE-TO-GO

The NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) is heading into an off weekend, but the grind doesn’t stop as pressure of the looming playoffs builds with just five races left in the NXS regular season. Chevrolet put on a strong showing in the series’ trip to the manufacturer’s home track of Michigan International Speedway, with JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier recording a runner-up finish and leading the bowtie brigade to seven top-10 finishes. Allgaier and the No. 7 JR Motorsports Camaro SS team has now finished in the top-three in three of the last four races, dating back to his most recent win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The weekend started out strong for the manufacturer right out of the gate, with Noah Gragson and the No. 8 JR Motorsports Camaro SS team capturing Chevrolet’s series-leading 12th pole win of the season. Leading the field to the green flag of the 125-lap race, Gragson went on to sweep both stage wins after pit strategy during the midway point provided crew chief Luke Lambert with the opportunity to opt for track position during a green flag pit cycle to compete for the stage two win. Gragson’s stage sweep marked Chevrolet’s manufacturer-leading 33rd NXS stage win of the season.

Following a series-leading 18th top-10 finish of 2022, AJ Allmendinger remained at the top of the NXS driver points standings, with fellow Chevrolet driver Justin Allgaier just 19 points back in the second position. Chevrolet also continues to hold strong in the top spot of the NXS manufacturer points standing, 89 points ahead of second. In the series’ 21 races thus far, Chevrolet drivers have accumulated 14 of those wins.. exactly double the win count of its manufacturer competitors combined (Toyota – 6; Ford – 1).

ONE PLAYOFF SPOT UP FOR GRABS

Kevin Harvick’s win at Michigan International Speedway made him the 15th different NASCAR Cup Series winner this season, leaving just one single spot remaining on the playoff grid for drivers to point their way into the 2022 NCS playoff field. Three races remaining in the series’ regular season means three opportunities for new winners.. which could potentially make a single win for some drivers not enough to secure their playoff berth.

Chevrolet’s NCS playoff outlook heading into Richmond:

· 2020 NCS Champion, Chase Elliott, remains in the top position in both driver points ranking and playoff ranking as he closes in on what would be his first career NCS regular season championship. In the NCS driver points standings, Elliott leads second-place Ryan Blaney by 119 points. Elliott’s series-leading four wins and 25 playoff points also has the Chevrolet driver ranked at the top of the playoff grid. Elliott could potentially clinch the regular season championship as early as this weekend at Richmond. The Chevrolet driver would need a 121-point lead over second-place in order secure the title.

· Seven different Chevrolet drivers have made at least one trip to victory lane and taken a spot in the 16-driver NCS playoff field thus far, giving the bowtie brand 43 percent of the playoff field with three races to go in the regular season.

· The first Chevrolet driver on the outside looking in is Petty GMS driver Erik Jones. While entering the Richmond race weekend below the cutline, the No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has recorded three top-10 finishes in the past five races.. making the team a strong contender to become the series’ 16th new winner of 2022.

· The winningest brand in the NASCAR Cup Series, Chevrolet, continues to sit atop the NCS manufacturer points standings, 76 points over second place. Along with its 13 wins and a winning percentage of 57%, Chevrolet also continues to lead the series in top-fives (54), top-10s (102), stage wins (20) and laps led (2,806).

BOWTIE BULLETS

· Active NASCAR Cup Series Chevrolet drivers that have won at Richmond Raceway:

Alex Bowman, No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1 (1 win – 2021)

Kyle Larson, No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1 (1 win – 2017)

· Chevrolet has recorded 39 wins and 46 pole wins at Richmond Raceway, both of which are series-leading statistics. Of those race wins includes a streak of six consecutive wins (2006-2008), giving the bowtie brand the record for the longest streak of consecutive wins in series’ history at the track.

· Current NASCAR Cup Series points leader, Chase Elliott, leads the series in a variety of statistical measures, including: race wins (4), laps led (658), average running position (10.5), average finish (10.3), top-10 finishes (15) and playoff points (25). Elliott could potentially clinch the regular season championship as early as this weekend, with the driver needing a 121-point lead over second-place to secure the title.

· Chevrolet heads into the Richmond race weekend with a manufacturer-leading 13 NASCAR Cup Series wins in 23 points-paying races. The bowtie brand also continues to lead its manufacturer competitors in NCS top-fives (54), top-10s (102), laps led (2,806) and stage wins (20).

· Seven Team Chevy drivers have combined 20 NASCAR Cup Series stage wins:

Tyler Reddick 2 – Fontana x2

Alex Bowman 1 – Las Vegas

Ross Chastain 4 – Las Vegas, Darlington, Charlotte, Pocono

William Byron 3 – Phoenix, Atlanta, Talladega

Daniel Suarez 2 – COTA, Charlotte

Chase Elliott 3 – Martinsville x2, Charlotte, Atlanta x2

Kyle Larson 3 – Bristol, Sonoma, Pocono

· Chevrolet leads the driver points standing in both the NASCAR Cup Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Chase Elliott remains in the top position in the NCS standings with a 119-point lead over second; and AJ Allmendinger continues to lead the NXS standings by 19 points. Chevrolet also remains atop both the NCS and NXS manufacturer points standings.

· With its 40 NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer Championships, 33 NASCAR Cup Series Driver Championships, and 827 all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins, Chevrolet continues to hold the title of winningest brand in NASCAR.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 MOOSE FRATERNITY CAMARO ZL1

There was a lot of fall off at the Richmond race earlier this year. The way it played out and with all of the different strategies, were you surprised with how that race played out?

“I wasn’t really surprised. From what I’ve seen since I’ve been around Richmond is that it has been a high fall off track. In the Xfinity Series, my spotter Lorin Rainer in 2016, he told me going into the weekend that if I would just listen to him, that I would run good. We had an 80 lap run to the finish and with 20 to go we went from 20th to seventh in Johnny Davis’ car. It was because we saved our rear tires. It’s the same thing this year, I burned off my front tires because we had such short runs in the spring for most of the race, and then all of the sudden we had a long run at the end and I wasn’t prepared as a driver for that. I put my front tires past the limit and made speed early but it really cost me when there was a really long run at the end.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1

Larson on the challenge of Richmond Raceway:

“What makes Richmond (Raceway) so difficult is the slow pace and the tires fall off quite a bit with the Next Gen car. It was difficult to pass earlier this year. Qualifying will be important and just taking care of your rear tires on a long run will be key.”

CLIFF DANIELS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1

Daniels on the organization’s gains on tracks less than a mile-and-a-half:

“We’ve upgraded our short-track program a lot. Our cars were okay at Richmond (Raceway) – we weren’t great. We certainly weren’t that good at Gateway. We really did a lot of work to get better for New Hampshire (Motor Speedway). We did not execute a good race at New Hampshire but we had a lot of car speed and the car had a lot of potential.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1

Elliott on racing at Richmond:

“In the spring, I really felt like we had a better car than where we finished. Strategy didn’t quite work in our favor, so I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do when we return this weekend. Passing is going to be tough again, so I really feel like qualifying and getting good track position is going to be important.”

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1

Gustafson on how to run well at Richmond:

“You need to have good security in the car and really being able to cut the center is important in order to perform well at Richmond (Raceway). Brakes can be difficult there, it’s not a super tough braking track but it’s very finicky how you use them. So, brakes can be paramount to the performance of the car. Those are the keys to be able to go fast. Of course, you also have to have good strategy. We had a lot of long green flag runs there in the spring so pit stops are also going to be super important.”

NOAH GRAGSON, NO. 16 CHEVY ACCESSORIES CAMARO ZL1

“Richmond is a really fun racetrack and I’m looking forward to trying to learn more in this new car each week. We had so much speed last weekend in Michigan, so everyone on this No. 16 team is super optimistic going into the weekend. It will be a challenge, since this is the first racetrack that I will really have to use the brake pedal on in the Cup series and my first short track. Having a win at Richmond in the Xfinity series also brings some confidence. That, plus the speed we have shown lately, makes me really eager for the weekend.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CAMARO ZL1

Byron on if he’s in ‘playoff mode’ yet:

“I don’t try to get into any sort of mode. I just try to race. We try, at times, to simulate what a playoff race would be like or things like that, but it never seems to work too well. We’re going to try our best when the playoffs start and we’re trying our best this weekend. Hopefully this weekend goes as we want it to. The only thing that races right now represent are the strengths or weaknesses at certain tracks. I feel like we’ve gotten the road courses pretty good, and we were really good at the short tracks earlier this year as well. Even though Richmond (Raceway) isn’t in the playoffs anymore, it’s a short track that will kind of represent a Phoenix (Raceway)-type track.”

RUDY FUGLE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CAMARO ZL1

Fugle on his thoughts for Richmond:

“We feel good about Richmond (Raceway). We ran really good there in the spring and led a lot of laps. The way that the pit strategy played out is the only reason we didn’t win. I could have made a different call but with the information I had at the time, I still feel like it was the right call. I’m just excited to get back there and give it another go. This race will be a day race instead of a night race. The track temperature will be higher which means you need more grip. You’ll have less grip in the track but more grip in the car hopefully and build off of that.”

JUSTIN HALEY, NO. 31 LEAFFILTER GUTTER PROTECTION CAMARO ZL1

“We had some issues last week in Michigan, but I’m looking forward to a fresh start at Richmond. We have been working hard on our short track program, so hopefully all the hard work translates over to this week and we can get a good finish.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Bowman on heading to Richmond this weekend:

“The No. 48 team has had success there which always helps our confidence. We ran well and took home a top 10 at Michigan (International Speedway) so we all feel like there is no reason we can’t go to Virginia this Sunday and build some momentum for the playoffs. Greg (Ives, crew chief) is really good about keeping us focused one race at a time, which helps us take the pressure off and perform when the time comes. We will study hard, prepare as much as we can and go execute this weekend.”

GREG IVES, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Ives on the top-10 finish at Michigan:

“It was a fight all day, but our team has that spirit in us. Starting 30th was not what any of us had in mind, but Alex (Bowman) did a great job to stay in it and trust myself and the rest of the team to get him what he needed. He was able to be aggressive and make the right moves to get to the front of the field. Our pit crew executed well and while I always want to do better, last weekend was a huge momentum-building moment for the No. 48 team as we head toward the start of the playoffs.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 COMMSCOPE CAMARO ZL1

Do you get frustrated with the way the last two weeks have gone?

“You get mad for a bit and disappointed, but not frustrated. Our Chevrolets have been really fast. We were in position to win at Indy. We were second headed to the final lap and we had a cut tire.

On Sunday, if the race had gone without a caution another lap, we would have been back up in the lead. It was just bad luck on the timing. If we keep running as well as we have the last two weeks luck will turn our way and we will be very happy.”

GRANT ENFINGER, NO. 23 SUREDONE / AUTO PARTS 4LESS SILVEARDO RST

“I’m definitely a short track guy, so I get excited any time the Camping World Truck Series heads to one. I think Richmond is a place that myself and Hensley have had some success at, and I also think that it’s one of those places that fits my natural driving style, so I don’t have to change any of my normal tendencies are to race there. I like that the tires fall off, and that we’re slipping and sliding, and that we have to manage that situation the whole time. We have some confidence from our last showing at IRP, so we’re going to roll that right into Richmond this week.”

JACK WOOD, NO. 24 CHEVYLINERS.COM SILVERADO RST

“I’m looking forward to racing at Richmond on Saturday. I’ve never raced there before, but Grant has been pretty strong there in the past, so hopefully, I’ll be able to learn some stuff from him about how that track tends to race. Hopefully, we can use this second short track race in a row as an opportunity to fix some of our problems from last time out at IRP, and I think there will be a good chance that we unload with a fast No. 24 ChevyLiners.com Silverado RST. It was nice to have an off week, but I’m ready to get back in the seat again.”

PHOENIX, Ariz., (August 11, 2022) – Sports car racer Sally McNulty has exciting changes ahead for the remainder of the 2022 TC America powered by Skip Barber Racing School championship. Forming a new midseason partnership, Sally McNulty and Skip Barber Racing will join forces for the remainder of the season, beginning with Rounds 9 and 10 of the championship at Road America in Wisconsin, August 19-21. McNulty will pilot the brand-new No. 780 Borla Exhaust Skip Barber 11th Generation Civic Si for the remainder of the 2022 championship. Making this cooperative even more significant, only two turnkey 11th Generation Civic Si Honda Performance Development (HPD) race chassis was created for 2022 and are the beginning of the next generation of HPD racing.

“I am beyond pumped for the opportunity to race the new generation of Civic Si turnkey race car by Honda, as well as work with a championship-winning team,” said McNulty. “I graduated from Skip Barber School with my competition license, and it just feels right to race under their name as well. Looking forward to growing as a driver and competitor with them for the rest of the 2022 season!”

McNulty, a first-generation racer, began her racing career by participating in track day experiences which progressed to participating in local National Auto Sport Association (NASA) events. In 2019, she then advanced to the TC America series, earning multiple top-five finishes.

From mechanical issues to on-track incidents, McNulty has faced a challenging season. She is currently sixth in the TCA America championship point standings, eager for the new energy of a promising partnership with Skip Barber Racing. Looking to finish the season strong, she has three more double-headers with the new car and team to amass more points.

Despite setbacks, she remains steadfast in her goal to be the first woman to win the overall championship. McNulty and Skip Barber Racing will start fresh for the 2023 championship, which has already been announced to begin at NOLA Motorsports Park, February 24-26.

“We worked with Sally leading into her rookie season in TC America,” said Adam Roberts, TC Team Manager. “Through our 3 Day Racing School and 2 Day Advanced Racing we were able to help Sally transition from Time Attack driver to licensed TC America racer. We built our race team to support our alumni, it’s great to have Sally drive for us. The whole team is excited to support her as she continues to develop her craft.”

  • About SureDone: Reducing your time spent on operational tasks and freeing up time to focus on sales, SureDone provides global multichannel listing, inventory and order management for growing businesses, brands, and enterprises with built in connections to marketplaces such as Auto Parts 4Less, eBay, Amazon, Walmart, Google, Facebook and Instagram, along with storefronts like Shopify and BigCommerce. Together, these capabilities automate normally expensive and time consuming tasks while allowing for rich integrations with other applications. On the web: www.SureDone.com or contact us at hello@suredone.com.
  • Chassis History/Info: Enfinger and the No. 23 team will be debuting a brand new Silverado RST in Richmond, as GMS Racing chassis no. 345 makes its on-track debut at the 0.75-mile short track. The crew at GMS Fabrication has prepped this piece specifically for the playoffs, and the No. 23 team is eager to see what it can do this weekend.
  • Pre-Race Invocation: Ahead of Saturday’s Worldwide Express 250, Grant Enfinger will deliver the pre-race invocation on stage with representatives from Motor Racing Outreach. As a devout man of faith, this is a very special opportunity for Grant, who also races with a handwritten Bible verse in his truck each weekend.
  • Short Track Heroes: Statistically speaking, short tracks are some of Enfinger’s best tracks on the schedule. With three wins, eight top-fives and 13 top-10 finishes across Richmond, Bristol, Martinsville, and IRP in his career, it’s typical to find him near the front of the field at these types of tracks. The veteran won in his first Richmond start back in 2020, and led the second most amount of laps in last year’s race as well. Also of note, Crew Chief Jeff Hensley has won twice before at Richmond – first in 2005 with Mike Skinner and most recently in 2020 with Grant.
  • Most Recent Winner: After fighting an uphill battle through the majority of the regular season, Grant Enfinger, Jeff Hensley, and the No. 23 team silenced the critics with a convincing first win of the season at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. The driver of the Champion Power Equipment Chevy was a threat throughout the night, but when a late race caution flew, a gutsy four tire call dropped him down the leaderboard with just a handful of laps left to run. Seemingly out of nowhere in a brilliant drive, Enfinger climbed all the way from 13th on the final two restarts to earn his seventh-career NCWTS win.
  • FearTheFinger Playoffs Profile: Grant Enfinger is the only driver who can breathe easily over the course of the next two races, as his win in Indianapolis secured his spot into the Round of 8. Heading into Richmond, Enfinger sits at the top of the playoffs grid, and is now focused on earning as many playoffs points as possible to build a cushion in the next round. While their spot is guaranteed, the No. 23 team is approaching races at Richmond and Kansas as big opportunities to continue their momentum. – GE Quote: “I’m definitely a short track guy, so I get excited any time the Camping World Truck Series heads to one. This specific chassis has quite the lengthy history on it, dating back to 2017 when it was initially debuted. Since the time it first joined the GMS fleet, multiple drivers have driven it to six top-fives and 10 top-10 finishes, including one win at Darlington Raceway in the spring of 2021, where it last competed. Richmond will mark the first time that Wood has piloted this Silverado RST.
  • Birthday Celebrations: On Sunday, August 7th, Jack Wood turned 22 years old. How did he celebrate? By going to the racetrack of course! Wood enjoyed the weekend off by attending the NTT IndyCar Series and Trans-Am race events on the streets of Nashville.
  • Richmond Rookie: Jack Wood is one of 16 drivers on the entry list that have never made a NASCAR national series start at Richmond Raceway. The rookie has three previous NCWTS short track starts under his belt, including two at Martinsville Speedway and one at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. With a background in short track racing on the West Coast, however, Wood is prepared to make his first laps at the iconic Virginia track on Saturday.
  • JW Quote: “I’m looking forward to racing at Richmond on Saturday. I’ve never raced there before, but Grant has been pretty strong there in the past, so hopefully, I’ll be able to learn some stuff from him about how that track tends to race. Tickets are now on sale for NASCAR’s 2023 Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 11, 2022) – Fans can now buy tickets to the most-anticipated sequel in recent NASCAR history.

NASCAR announced today that tickets are on sale for the 2023 Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum as excitement builds for racing’s return to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The blockbuster event will be held on Feb. 5 and include all of the thrills, chills and spills that only NASCAR racing can provide inside one of the most iconic venues in the history of sport.

“The LA Coliseum was the place to be during the first Sunday in February this year, and that will certainly be the case for next year’s Busch Light Clash,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s senior vice president for racing development and strategy. “The fans who missed out this year now have a golden opportunity to join us in 2023, and it’s going to be a celebration to remember. It will be the first event of NASCAR’s 75th Anniversary season and an integral part of the Coliseum’s centennial.”

Tickets for the 2023 Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum begin at $65, and kids 12-and-under are $10. Those are the same prices charged for this year’s inaugural showcase, which not only featured NASCAR’s season-opening exhibition race, but also included unforgettable performances by international superstars Ice Cube, Pitbull and DJ Skee.

The musical lineup for the 2023 Busch Light Clash will be cast in the coming weeks, but one thing is already certain – the stars of the NASCAR Cup Series will be the main box-office draw. They’ll deliver intense, door-to-door racing on a quarter-mile asphalt track that’s nestled inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Four preliminary heats and two last-chance qualifiers will set the stage for the main event featuring 23 daring drivers. They will all try to capture the spotlight Joey Logano enjoyed by winning the first NASCAR race in the heart of Los Angeles earlier this year.

We also know that the NASCAR Fan Fest at the Coliseum will also be bigger and better, featuring more fun and interactive elements for racing fans of all ages. Fans in California can also share their excitement by purchasing customized license plates at nascarplates.com that benefit California’s Outdoors for All initiative and The NASCAR Foundation.

For the latest information and to secure the best seats for the 2023 Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum, fans are encouraged to visit nascarclash.com.

That, plus the speed we have shown lately, makes me really eager for the weekend.” – Noah Gragson on Richmond Raceway

(Torrance, CA, August 10, 2022) Two-time California Lightning Sprint Car Series champion Brent Sexton raced to a convincing win when the CLS was part of the reopening of the Santa Maria Raceway last Saturday night. The win, Sexton’s first ever at the San Luis Obispo County oval, came before an enthusiastic, sellout crowd.

A total of 16 CLS cars showed for the first race at Santa Maria in over a year. Savage Racing Qualifying saw teenager “Shugah” Shane Sexton record the fastest lap with a time of 14.161. Defending CLS champion and current point leader David Gasper of Santa Barbara was second best on the clocks with a 14.275. Five-time series champion Bobby Michnowicz of Oak Hills turned in the third fastest time at 14.308.

T Shirts By Timeless sponsored the two CLS heat races. San Diego’s A.J. Bender, who has two CLS winds at the Bakersfield Speedway in 2022, captured the first heat race over “Rockstar” Jon Robertson of Torrance, and Michnowicz. Rookie driver Connor Speir of Fillmore captured the second heat over Sexton, who was the eighth fastest driver in qualifying, and Gasper.

A three lap trophy dash, sponsored by R&R Racing, Dick Hindman, Timeless Enterprises, and J.J. Ercse, would determine the starting positions for the first three rows of the main event. Bender picked up right where he left off in his heat race and won the dash, too. The victory was worth $230.00. He would start on the front row of the main with Gasper alongside. Third place Robertson was on the inside of the second row and was joined by Sexton. The third row was slated to feature Jeremy Queener of Lake Elsinore and Michnowicz. However, Michnowicz withdrew for the night after the dash.

Bender steered Mike Schweitzer’s #41B into the lead on the start with Gasper, Sexton, Robertson, and Yucca Valley’s Jeff Dyer giving chase. The boat captain by trade quickly put some distance between himself and Gasper and was a quarter straightaway ahead by lap 5. Likewise, Gasper had pulled away from third place Sexton.

Bender caught up to the lapped traffic on lap 9. That was despite broken wing struts on the front wing of his race car. As the lappers momentarily slowed his progress, Gasper, in the “Kittle-Blue #18,” closed in on the leader. He raced outside of Bender going into turn three and snatched first place as they raced off turn four.

Bender closed back in on Gasper on lap 11. He tried to go by on the inside in turn one. By that time of the night, turns one and two looked like a lunar landscape and Gasper maintained the top spot. Conditions continued to deteriorate on the same end of the track and Bender got way sideways in turn two on the 13th circuit. By the time he recovered, Sexton had raced by for second.

Three laps later, series leading rookie Will Browne spun in the same spot where Bender got sideways. Gasper who was not far behind, could not avoid the white #8 and plowed into him. The current point leader broke a shock and bent his front axle and was knocked out of the race. However, it could have been worse. As the race was scheduled in June, it was not a traditional points race. All drivers who showed received the same amount of points. Thus, Gasper will have the same point lead at the next race.

When the race resumed, Sexton, who has two wins and is the point leader in the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series, had Bender on his tail with less than 10 circuits remaining. That is, he had Bender behind him until lap 22 when the #41B broke a chain tensioner and the chain ripped all the teeth out of the back sprocket.

Bender’s exit gave Sexton a commanding lead. When the checkers ended the race, he was nearly a half track ahead of the competition in his Sexton Fire Protection/BK Wings/ Johnny Motorhead/Troy Dirt/Victory Graphix/Swift Powdercoat/ Maxima Oil/Automated Interior/Scotty and Jimmy Keys #44. Queener ended up second with Sexton’s nephew, “Shugah” Shane Sexton, third. Robertson and Bakersfield’s Leland Day were the first two CLS regulars across the line and they finished fourth and fifth respectively. It was the best 2022 series finish for both.

“Me and my boys are running the Minkota Nationals next week,” Sexton told the massive crowd after the race. “So, I wanted to come out here and shake the car down. It worked out perfect. Hopefully, it will be a shot in the arm for us back in the Midwest. It is great to see Santamaria back open again. This place is awesome. Hopefully, we can keep doing it.”

Sexton pocketed the lion’s share of the lap money when he took home $250.00. Bender grabbed $200.00 before his exit and Gasper pocketed $175.00 before his early dismissal.

Date/Broadcast: Aug. 13, 2022, at 8 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Neme’chek’ The Facts:

John Hunter Nemechek and the No. 4 Safeway team head into the second race of the Round of 10 in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, where they are the defending race winners. Nemechek led a race-high 114 laps and held off a late charge from KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch in last year’s event to claim the second of his series-leading five victories in 2022. In addition to collecting a victory in his lone Truck Series start at Richmond, Nemechek has made five Xfinity Series starts at the 0.75-mile track, tallying 171 laps led, two top-five and three top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 8.0. Earlier this season, Nemechek piloted the No. 18 GR Supra for Joe Gibbs Racing at the Virginia facility, leading a race-high 135 laps before finishing second. He has also made one Cup Series start at Richmond in 2020, bringing home a 30th-place finish.

Nemechek enters Saturday’s race 24 points above the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 8 with two races remaining in the Round of 10. In the first race of the playoffs at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, Nemechek captured the pole and led a race-high 75 laps but was relegated to a 10th-place finish after losing several spots after a restart in NASCAR overtime. He also earned an additional playoff point, should he advance to the Round of 8, by capturing the Stage One win.

With six races remaining in the 2022 Truck Series season, the second-generation driver leads all Truck Series regulars in poles (five), average starting position (6.7), and average running position (9.094). He is also second in driver rating (103.7) and laps led (263).

The Toyota Racing driver spent his off week from Camping World Truck Series action making his seventh Xfinity Series start of the season behind the wheel of the No. 26 GR Supra for Sam Hunt Racing at Michigan International Speedway. After qualifying 31st, Nemechek drove his GR Supra to a 19th-place finish.

Safeway will adorn the hood of the No. 4 Tundra TRD Pro this Saturday at Richmond Raceway. Safeway operates as a banner of Albertsons Companies, one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States. With both a strong local presence and national scale, the company operates stores across 35 states and the District of Columbia under 20 well-known banners.

Nemechek is a 12-time winner in Camping World Truck Series action, winning at least one race each season from 2015 to 2018 for his family-owned team, NEMCO Motorsports, and returning to victory lane in 2021 and 2022 with KBM. Across 141 career starts in NASCAR’s third division, he has compiled seven poles, 1,444 laps led, 47 top-five and 78 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 12.4.

Eric Phillips returned to lead the No. 4 team in 2022. His 42 career Truck Series victories make him the winningest crew chief in Truck Series history, with 33 of those coming while at KBM including five last year. Phillips led the No. 18 team at KBM in its debut season in 2010 and helped build the organization into one of the premier teams in all of NASCAR before departing at the end of the 2014 season. Under his guidance, the No. 18 team won eight races in its inaugural campaign and became the Series history to capture an owner’s championship in its first season of competition. In 2014, the Illinois native led the first team in Truck No. 51 team to an owner’s championship and his team’s 10 wins spearheaded KBM to a single-season Truck Series record of 14 wins. Phillips has been atop the box for just three Camping World Truck Series starts at Richmond Raceway. In those three starts, his drivers have recorded one win (Nemechek – 2021), 115 laps led, one top-five and one top-10 finish resulting in an average finish of 22.0.

John Hunter Nemechek, Driver Q&A:
John Hunter Nemechek | Richmond Raceway Preview
You won at Richmond last year in the Truck Series and had a strong run there earlier this year in the Xfinity Series. Is it a track you look forward going to?
“Yeah, it definitely is. Richmond being in the playoffs now is huge for us and our team, I think. Richmond has been a place I have always loved going to, I’ve always ran really well there, and a place I’ve just figured out as a driver. You have to have good equipment underneath of you and I’m excited to get back in our Toyota Tundra TRD Pro this weekend and go see if we can chase our second victory of the year and our second victory at Richmond. Hopefully, we can put all of our tools, resources, notes, and experience to the test and go out there and kick some butt.”

Last year was a day race, what differences do you expect this year with the race being at night?
“There definitely will be differences racing at night compared to the day; cooler temps, the track probably won’t be as slick, but it’s also later in the year so temps might be around the same as when we were there last year and it being a cooler Spring race. I don’t really know; I don’t know what to expect as far as day to night. I’m glad we’re starting at night and not transitioning from day to night because I feel like that would be an even bigger swing vehicle wise. Just got to stay in tune with what the racetrack is doing, make the right adjustments, be on top of it and just have the right strategy for the whole race.”

You’re 24 points above the cutoff line, how do you feel going into the last two races in the Round of 8?
“I don’t want to say I feel comfortable but I’m more comfortable than us being below the line. Twenty four points isn’t a lot but it’s a substantial amount to be above the line. Hopefully, we can just continue to push forward and lock ourselves in with a win this weekend, that would make things a lot easier to go to the second round.”

John Hunter Nemechek Career Highlights:

  • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (96) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 19, Corey Heim became the 18th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
  • The No. 4 has 17 career victories at KBM and was the number for both of the organization’s driver championships.
