No. 42 J.F. Electric / Utilitra Chevrolet Silverado RST
Driver: Matt Mills | Crew Chief: Mike Shiplett

Start: 21st
Stage 1: 20th
Stage 2: 22nd
Finish: 20th
Driver Points: 19th
Owner Points: 24th

  • Key Takeaway: Matt Mills and the No. 42 team brought home a 20th-place finish at Pocono Raceway. Mills found it difficult to make up track position as he was mired in traffic, and picked up some slight damage in a mid-race incident. The J.F. Electric team made repairs and kept Mills on track to finish the race inside the top-20.
  • Matt Mills’ Post-Race Thoughts: “Overall, I think we just lacked some speed today. We tightened our truck up too much in practice, and I think that carried over to the race. We just built too tight and the adjustments we made weren’t enough to help us. I got some damage there in the wreck, and really couldn’t get any track position. I’m thankful to my guys for putting in the effort in making us better, and for the support of J.F. Electric, Utilitra, and all of our partners. We’ll move onto a new track in Lime Rock next week and I’ll be looking forward to racing there.”

Driver: Conner Jones | Crew Chief: Wally Rogers

Start: 22nd
Stage 1: 15th
Stage 2: 18th
Finish: 31st
Driver Points: 44th
Owner Points: 17th

  • Key Takeaway: Conner Jones and the No. 44 team were forced out in an early Pocono exit due to a crash on lap 47. After starting 22nd, Jones was moving forward before getting collected, but the damage proved to be too severe to continue. He was credited with a 31st-place finish in his second outing with the team.
  • Conner Jones’ Post-Race Thoughts: On the crash that sidelined him.

“I was honestly just trying to get through it. I saw smoke, tried checking up, and thought I had it cleared, and then I think the No. 26 [Dawson Sutton] just clipped me. I mean, really nothing any of us could have done. I just can’t thank my guys at Niece Motorsports enough. This Niece Equipment / Jones Utilities / Bill’s Appliance Center Chevy was really good today, and I’m just looking forward to the next race at New Hampshire.”

No. 45 DQS Solutions & Staffing Chevrolet Silverado RST
Driver: Kaden Honeycutt | Crew Chief: Phil Gould

Start: 2nd
Stage 1: 2nd
Stage 2: 6th
Finish: 3rd
Driver Points: 6th
Owner Points: 6th

  • Key Takeaway: Kaden Honeycutt and the No. 45 team matched their season-best showing with an impressive third-place finish. Honeycutt started off strong on the front row, and maintained track position through the first stage. With stage finishes of second and sixth, Honeycutt nabbed a total of 15 extra points on the day. The driver remains above the Playoffs cutline with a 45-point advantage, currently sixth overall.
  • Kaden Honeycutt’s Post-Race Thoughts:

Interviewer: Kaden Honeycutt matches his career-best finish with a third-place run. Kaden, just tell us, how did you?

“Yeah, just a great truck by these guys. This DQS Solutions & Staffing No. 45 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet was good today. We just lacked a little front turn, really. I just think we were too stiff in the front end and the ride quality wasn’t great. It’s good to be frustrated with a top-five; this team just wants to win, and I want to win just as bad as they do, if not more. I just want to thank everyone for supporting us. This was also in remembrance of Charlie Henderson. He was riding with us today, and he’s really going to be missed for sure in this garage.

Just want to thank our guys at the fab shop. We build our own trucks, and this is another good one they built. Just got to work on it a little bit more, but thanks to Precision Vehicle Logistics, J.F. Electric, and everyone that supports us in our deal. We’ll move onto Lime Rock now and see if we can win one in the next couple of weeks to lock us into the Playoffs.”

LEXINGTON, Ohio (June 20, 2025) – Rookie Bruno Ribeiro secured the Formula Regional Americas Championship (FR Americas) pole at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Friday afternoon. Fresh off two back-to-back podiums at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), Ribeiro (No. 01 Alfa Cem / Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3) took his momentum east to set a new qualifying track record in FR Americas with a lap time of 1:18.638.

The Brazilian native turned heads as he finished qualifying only 0.087 seconds ahead of his Kiwi Motorsport teammate Nicolas Ambiado (No. 55 Velox USA / Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3). Brady Golan (No. 80 Attire / Toney Driver Development Ligier JS F3) followed in third.

Toyota GAZOO Racing NCTS Post-Race Recap – Pocono – 06.20.25

TANNER GREY BRINGS HOME BEST FINISH OF THE SEASON WITH RUNNER-UP RESULT AT POCONO
Brandon Jones earns fourth-place finish in his final Truck Series race of the season

POCONO, Pa. (June 20, 2025) – Tanner Gray matched his career-best finish with a runner-up result in Friday evening’s NASCAR Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway – also earning his best finish of the season. The driver of the No. 15 TRICON Garage Toyota Tundra TRD Pro notched his third top-five of 2025 and the 13th top-five of his Truck Series career.

TRICON Garage teammate Brandon Jones finished fourth, giving Toyota two Tundra TRD Pros in the top five.

Toyota development driver Corey Heim dominated much of the 80-lap race, leading a race-high 48 laps. But under caution on Lap 61, Heim radioed his team to report a tire going down. He was forced to pit just as the race returned to green, costing him a potential victory.

Joining Gray and Jones in the top-10 was Michigan race winner Stewart Friesen, who finished eighth.

TOYOTA QUOTES

TANNER GRAY, No. 15 Place of Hope Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON GARAGE

Finishing Position: 2nd

What More Could you have done to catch Layne Riggs?

“Really happy with the day that we had. Really proud of everyone with TRICON Garage, everyone works really hard on this No. 15 Place of Hope Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. We executed really well. We hadn’t been able to put together any solid races as of lately, so to have a solid day like that is refreshing. In the past I’ve struggled here. We just haven’t been able to put races together, so it feels good to be able to do that today. It’s refreshing to have a good run, but at the same time it’s tough because we have to win to get into the playoffs and we were one spot away from it there. All in all I’m proud of everybody, but really wanted to be one spot better.”

BRANDON JONES, No. 1 Spectracide Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

Finishing Position: 4th

You seemed to have a fast truck on the last run, but did you simply run out of time?

“I did a little bit. This is my last one of the year. I strategically picked out the races I did this year where I legitimately thought I had a shot to win. I tried to pick my best tracks and it was hard to put some of these races together. We had really fast Toyota Tundra’s all year long and got caught up in a lot of incidents not of our doing. It was nice to cap it off with a top-five for these guys. They’ve definitely done a lot of growing this year and I think they’ve got even more to grow. They’ve done a really good job of bringing fast race trucks to the track. Just need to get some luck on their side like they got today. It was a difficult race for sure. There was a lot of aero racing. You have to think five steps ahead of where you are going to position your truck to take advantage of guys. It takes a lot of discipline on these restarts, you want to fan out, but you end up getting freight trained if you do, so it’s tough.”

VICTORY LANE INTERVIEWS

LAYNE RIGGS, No. 34 Bare Knuckle Brawl Ford F-150 – “That’s just a testament to this team. That thing was bad fast, especially that last run right there. I really hate the 11 fell out. I’m not sure what the 7 was doing on the restart there, but I made sure to take advantage of it. I’m not really sure why we slowed down 30 miles an hour coming to the restart zone, but I’m a happy man right now. It’s great to have Bare Knuckle Boxing on the truck. They have a fight tonight in Nashville. Make sure to tune in on Vice TV and see all the action after this race, but I’m on Cloud Nine. This is not one I had circled. Last year, we wrecked in practice and didn’t qualify and rode around dead last all day. Today, we were the best, so it’s amazing.”

YOU WERE 30TH LAST YEAR IN A BACKUP TRUCK HERE, BUT TODAY YOU’RE THE WINNER. “This is not the one I had circled to win. I said that earlier and I’ll take last year because it was all worth it in the end for this year’s performance. What a great truck. This one was gonna win in Nashville and it won today. This this is just so good. Our newest builds and I’m just so proud of everybody at Front Row Motorsports. They do a great job. Dillon, Jonathan. The whole pit crew has really stepped it up. I know we’ve had highlight montages of our bad pit stops and they got me some spots on pit road today, so I’m just super proud of everybody. It’s a great feeling. Dad actually won an ARCA race here back in the day and I was just now thinking about that, but it’s great to have Bare Knuckle Boxing on the truck. They have a fight tonight in Nashville. I’m excited to tune in on Vice TV to watch all the action after this and keep supporting, but this is a great feeling. It’s awesome.”

WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR MIND AS THE RACE UNFOLDS? “No cautions. It was very hectic coming to the line. The 11 asked if he had a flat. I didn’t see he had a flat. I’m not sure if he did or not, and then we weren’t sure if the 7 or me was the control truck, so I was going off the 7 assuming he was in the right lane, so he slowed way down. I don’t know if he was waiting for me or what, but they posted him. I hated that we didn’t get to really race it out with them, but I’ll take them how they come. It was a great day, a great truck, just didn’t quite have the track position early like we wanted, but we had track position at the end and that’s the only one that really pays.”

YOU ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS NOW. WHAT IS THE RELIEF FACTOR? “What’s the first playoff race? That’s the one we have to start working on right now. That’s the one that matters. We’ll just get through these next few and do the best we can through them, but we’re going playoff racing – finally. We didn’t get to do it last year, but we had the speed and the ability and the team to do it and I’m just so glad to get these guys there and try to go get a big trophy.”

IT’S DARLINGTON. “Darlington. I love that track. Perfect.”

Rest to Race Again: How the Right Mattress Size Supports Total Recovery

Athletes and fitness enthusiasts know that training doesn’t end at the gym—it continues while you sleep. Recovery is a 24/7 process, and your mattress plays a more critical role than most people realize. From muscle repair to hormonal balance and mental reset, quality sleep is the secret weapon behind every strong performance. Want to fine-tune your setup? Be sure to use our bed size chart to sleep smarter and find the right fit for your lifestyle, space, and recovery goals.

The Recovery-Sleep Connection: Why It All Begins in Bed

After a high-intensity workout or competition, your body shifts into repair mode. This is when:

  • Muscles rebuild through protein synthesis
  • Growth hormone is released
  • Cortisol levels drop
  • Inflammation begins to subside

All of this happens most efficiently during deep sleep. But it’s hard to achieve true rest on a cramped or poorly sized mattress. Tossing and turning, limited movement space, or being forced into awkward positions due to inadequate mattress dimensions can interrupt the stages of sleep your body relies on most.

Mattress Size and Movement: Let Your Body Breathe

If you’re an active sleeper or share your bed with a partner, a larger mattress—such as a queen or king—can make a significant difference in recovery. Why? Because physical recovery demands freedom of movement. You need room to stretch sore legs, shift weight off pressure points, and rotate naturally throughout the night without restriction.

Recommended Sizes for Recovery-Focused Sleepers:

  • Twin XL: Ideal for solo athletes in small spaces. It offers extra legroom compared to a standard twin.
  • Queen: A balanced choice that provides enough space for one person to move freely—or for two if you don’t mind snuggling.
  • King / California King: Best for couples or taller individuals who need room to spread out without sacrificing comfort.

Pro tip: If you’re constantly waking up in the middle of the night because you feel cramped or hot, the problem may not be your mattress quality—it could be your mattress size.

Pressure Relief and Spinal Alignment

Athletes often suffer from tight hips, sore backs, or stiff shoulders. These pain points can worsen without a supportive surface that distributes weight properly. Larger mattresses allow manufacturers to engineer more responsive zones of support and relief—especially in hybrid and memory foam models. This helps keep your spine aligned, improves circulation, and reduces tossing due to discomfort.

And when your spine is in neutral alignment, your muscles can fully relax, enabling faster recovery from strain or overuse.

Mattress Sharing: When Recovery Is a Team Effort

If you share your bed with a partner, pet, or even a child, your recovery sleep can be easily disrupted by movement, snoring, or differing sleep styles. A larger mattress allows each sleeper to have their own “zone,” minimizing disturbances.

Consider this:

  • Queen: Works if you and your partner sleep similarly and don’t need much extra room.
  • King: Offers the most undisturbed space, especially if one of you tends to toss and turn or wake frequently.
  • California King: Adds extra legroom, ideal for taller athletes or those who sleep with pets at the foot of the bed.

Recovery isn’t just about getting sleep—it’s about getting undisturbed, quality sleep. The right mattress size helps ensure that.

Mental Recovery: Don’t Overlook the Brain

Physical performance is only part of the recovery puzzle. Your brain also needs restorative sleep to consolidate memories, process emotional stress, and support focus and reaction times. Studies show that fragmented sleep (often caused by a cramped bed or partner disturbance) leads to impaired cognitive function—even if you technically get “enough” sleep hours.

Upgrading to the correct mattress size doesn’t just benefit your body—it’s a mental health investment, too.

Real Athlete Experiences: Why Size Made the Difference

Case Study 1: Marathon Runner, Age 34
“When I switched from a full-size mattress to a king, I realized how much I was missing out on. I no longer woke up stiff, and my hip soreness disappeared within a month. Having room to stretch made a night-and-day difference.”

Case Study 2: CrossFit Athlete, Age 29
“My partner and I used to fight over space in bed after long workouts. We upgraded to a California King and suddenly we both slept through the night. I felt more recovered and less foggy the next morning.”

These real-world testimonials reinforce what sleep experts already know: mattress size isn’t a luxury—it’s part of a recovery strategy.

How to Choose the Right Size for Your Lifestyle

Choosing a mattress size goes beyond measuring your room. Ask yourself:

  • Do you sleep alone or with someone else?
  • Are you tall or do you sleep stretched out?
  • Do you move around a lot at night?
  • Do you share your bed with pets or kids?
  • Are you recovering from injury or intense training?

Still unsure what size fits your needs? Again, don’t forget to use our bed size chart to sleep smarter—it breaks down dimensions and best-use cases in a simple, visual format.

The Final Lap: Recovery Starts Where You Sleep

If you’ve been investing in recovery tools like massage guns, compression boots, or cryotherapy but still wake up sore, it’s time to look at where it all starts: your bed. A supportive, spacious mattress ensures your body has the space and structure it needs to truly rest, rebuild, and rise again stronger.

Remember, the journey to peak performance isn’t just paved with protein shakes and gym hours—it also includes silent hours in a properly sized sleep sanctuary.

Layne Riggs claims first Truck Series win of the season at Pocono

After capturing his first career pole, Layne Riggs led 25 laps in his No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford en route to a decisive victory at Pocono Raceway. It was his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win this season and the third of his career.

Riggs is the first Ford driver to win a Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway since 2013, when Ryan Blaney took home the checkered flag in 2013.

Tanner Gray finished second, followed by Kaden Honeycutt, Brandon Jones, and Daniel Hemric to complete the top five. Connor Mosack, Chandler Smith, Stewart Friesen, Ty Majeski, and Rajah Caruth rounded out the top 10.

“That’s just a testament to this team,” Gray said in Victory Lane. “That thing was bad fast, especially that last run right there. I really hate the 11 (Corey Heim) fell out. I’m not sure what the 7 (Carson Hocevar) was doing on the restart there, but I made sure to take advantage of it.”

“I’m not really sure why we slowed down 30 miles an hour coming to the restart zone, but I’m a happy man right now. It’s great to have Bare Knuckle Boxing on the truck. They have a fight tonight in Nashville. Make sure to tune in on Vice TV and see all the action after this race, but I’m on Cloud Nine.”

“This is not one I had circled. Last year, we wrecked in practice and didn’t qualify and rode around dead last all day. Today, we were the best, so it’s amazing.”

The win at Pocono propels Riggs to the NASCAR Playoffs, and he already has a strategy plan in place.

“What’s the first playoff race? That’s the one we have to start working on right now. That’s the one that matters.” He said.  “We’ll just get through these next few and do the best we can through them, but we’re going playoff racing – finally. We didn’t get to do it last year, but we had the speed and the ability and the team to do it and I’m just so glad to get these guys there and try to go get a big trophy.”

Corey Heim led the most laps (48 of 80), but a flat tire before the final restart led to a disappointing 23rd-place finish.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will make its debut at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, for the LIUNA 150 on Saturday, June 28th at 1:00 pm ET on FOX.

Kirkwood Turns Up Heat in First Road America Practice

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Friday, June 20, 2025) – Two heat waves are arriving this weekend at the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America Presented by AMR.

One is a weather system expected to hike air temperatures into the mid-90s Saturday and Sunday at the iconic Road America circuit in Wisconsin. The other is named Kyle Kirkwood.

Kirkwood, who has won the last two NTT INDYCAR SERIES races, continued his hot form Friday by leading the first practice with a top lap of 1 minute, 44.9881 seconds in the No. 27 Siemens Honda fielded by Andretti Global. Kirkwood is third in the series standings, two points behind second-place Pato O’Ward and 75 behind leader Alex Palou.

“Good start,” Kirkwood said. “Definitely a session that was hindered a little bit by the red and the timing (of red flag). Happy to be quick once again here. We were quick last year, so I guess that’s a good positive to take away from today, and hopefully that trend continues.

“But the weather is going to be so much different tomorrow that I’m not sure what we learned from today is going to be applicable tomorrow or the next day. We’ll see what happens.”

The air temperature, in the low 80s Friday, is expected to climb at least 10 degrees into the mid-90s Saturday and Sunday. That will reduce the grip of the Firestone Firehawk tires and test the stamina of drivers.

Devlin DeFrancesco, 25th in points, ended up a surprising second at 1:45.1414 in the No. 30 Manitou Group Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Team Penske began its rebound from a tough event last Sunday night at World Wide Technology Raceway by placing third and fourth on the 14-turn, 4.014-mile natural-terrain road course. Reigning Road America winner Will Power was third at 1:45.1795 in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, while two-time Road America winner Josef Newgarden was fourth at 1:45.2228 in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet.

Christian Lundgaard rounded out the top five at 1:45.2246 in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Scott McLaughlin helped Penske’s recovery by clocking in sixth at 1:45.3191 in the No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet. McLaughlin, Newgarden and Power finished 24th, 25th and 27th, respectively, last Sunday night on the oval at WWTR.

Championship leader Palou was ninth at 1:45.3664 in the No. 10 SOLO Cup Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Palou led with seven minutes left in the 75-minute session, but nearly the entire field pitted late for Firestone Firehawk alternate tires, which provide more grip and speed but have less durability.

That shuffled the order considerably until the checkered flag, although a red flag with five minutes left caused by a trip into the Turn 1 gravel by 2019 Road America winner Alexander Rossi in the No. 20 ECR Java House Chevrolet interrupted some late attempts to dash up the speed charts.

Up next is pre-qualifying practice at 11 a.m. ET Saturday, followed by NTT P1 Award qualifying at 2:30 p.m. ET. FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network will provide live coverage.

The 55-lap race starts at 1:30 p.m. ET Sunday (FOX, FOX Deportes, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network).

Chevrolet-powered drivers turn five of the seven quickest laps in Road America practice – Will Power fastest

  • Defending race winner Will Power in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, was the quickest of the five Team Chevy drivers in the top seven on the timesheet during Friday practice in preparation for the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America Presented by AMR. Power’s 105.1795-second lap was the third best on the 4.014-mile, 14-turn Road America road course. His teammates Josef Newgarden in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet and Scott McLaughlin in the No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet, along with Christian Lundgaard in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet and David Malukas in the No. 4 Clarience Technologies/A.J. Foyt Racing Chevrolet joined Power.
  • A late red flag interrupted drivers on the preferred Alternate Firestone Firehawk Tires (Reds) during qualifying simulations, leaving a portion of the field with question marks headed into qualifying on Saturday afternoon.
  • Team Chevy drivers were quick on the critical long straightaways leading to the two best passing zones on the undulating and wooded circuit.
  • Malukas, at 186.075 mph, was the quickest in the speed trap on the long downhill run to Turn 5, with Chevrolet-powered drivers holding four of the top five speeds.
  • McLaughlin, at 188.475mph, was the quickest through Kettle Bottoms and the speed trap approaching Turn 12, with Chevrolet-powered drivers holding the top five speeds.
  • The Team Chevy drivers and teams will practice one more time at 10 am (Central), before qualifying at 1:30 pm on Saturday.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES FRIDAY PRACTICE RESULTS FROM ROAD AMERICA:

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING (Quotes):

ARROW MCLAREN

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“It was a bummer we didn’t get a real run on Firestone Alternates. It’s obviously not ideal going into Qualifying tomorrow, but I think the car is somewhat in the window. We know what the issues are so now, we’re just trying to see what the best solution is.”

Nolan Siegel, No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“That was a positive start to the weekend, and it feels good to say that. We started comfortable and quick right out of the gate. We were solid on both tires, and it was a smooth session with no issues as we get back to another place I’ve raced in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Overall, I’m just feeling comfortable and back at home because I love Road America; it’s one of my favorites. It’s nice to roll off strong.”

Christian Lundgaard, No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“Good practice here in Road America. We were pretty fast straight out of the gate, and we kind of carried that momentum throughout the session. So far, a very positive start, and it gives us a good foundation to build on. Going into Practice 2, it’s all about what do we really need, weighing the pros and cons, what do we need to sacrifice and what we need to improve. I think we’re in a good spot right now. We’ll take our time overnight and figure it out properly.”

TEAM PENSKE

Scott McLaughlin, No. 3 DEX Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet:

“It was good to see how the hybrid reacted here as the last track – at least until next year – where we haven’t used it. Everything seemed good to go there. Really want to get a win here for XPEL and Chevy. I think all Chevy drivers are chomping at the bit to get that done. Road America is as good a place as any for that.”

Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet:

“Yeah it was definitely nice to come here after last weekend and continue to have speed in the Verizon Chevy. We’ve had speed all year and it feels like this could be the weekend where it all comes together. Lots to do between now and then and the heat is only going to rise. Qualifying is always important here as well so we need to get a solid starting spot tomorrow and go from there.”

Josef Newgarden

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Wrapping up today’s practice session, currently joined by Josef Newgarden, two-time winner here at Road America, runner-up finish last year. What did you learn in that practice session?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: It’s going to be hot, for sure. I don’t know how you can really prepare much more for that other than it’s just going to be what it’s going to be.

Yeah, I mean, hybrid obviously compared to last year, trying to understand the weight difference. A little bit more of a lap time loss at this track relative to others because of the distance. You’re going to see a little more lap time loss, a second and a half to last year’s would be my guess. Just trying to understand the traits of the car, what we need to do with the tires.

It’s going to be hot. I said that again, but trying to understand not just from a personal standpoint but how the car reacts. The temperature is going to be a big deal. It’s normally never this sort of temperature around this place. That will be the tricky part to get right.

THE MODERATOR: We’ll open it up for questions.

Q. In the past different hot venues, INDYCAR had the aeroscreen. Anything that can be done or has been done to make it more effective to make it more comfortable for y’all in the car?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I mean, it’s fine. It’s fine the way it is. We got cool suits, all sorts of stuff. I don’t think they need to do much more.

Q. Anything you felt you were missing, corner or two corners, something you were missing a little bit at all?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Not really. There’s always something to improve. I felt like our (indiscernible) lap wasn’t the best. If I could have done a better lap… Other than that, the car was in a pretty good window. Happy to start out.

Q. You feel as good as you did a week ago?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I feel better.

Q. All your workouts and…

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Feel even better, Bob (smiling).

Q. Having a good practice after last week, is that…

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I don’t think it matters, no.

Q. We saw some of the hybrids were overheating like at Thermal and stuff. Will the heat impact that at all? Is it impacting performance?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I think that’s a good question for all of us to understand this weekend. Obviously, like you said, Thermal, there was some mitigation that had to happen there. We don’t want to see that. It’s a big performance loss, especially around this track because of the long straights.

I think there’s unknowns with how high the temperature is going to get. We feel comfortable that we have enough room, but you never know until you actually go through it. It is a question mark in front of us right now that we’re trying to make sure we have covered.

Q. About last week, there was some question about whether the yellow should have come out earlier. Did you talk to anybody at INDYCAR about that?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I didn’t. It’s just bad timing. Wrong place, wrong time. So, you know, that happens. In the wrong spot at the wrong moment.

Q. That’s not your first big crash. What is it like to try to move on, put that behind you? Scary experience.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Not really. I mean, it sucked. I was like, Oh, this… But the only thing you’re thinking about is that race is done. Other than that, I’m happy to be back at the track.

I don’t know. It’s kind of awesome to smoke a car into the wall and then come back and race at Road America. I love it. I’m happy to be here.

Q. Do you have any vantage at all of Louis’ car until you pop around Palou? Seemed like you might have been so focused on Palou, there was no way to see his car there at all.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Yeah, I didn’t see him. I didn’t see him come across the track. I saw Louis up against the wall as I was exiting four. This is happening in like a couple seconds, right? Wasn’t really focused on him.

I went through three. As we’re getting out of four, I was trying to make a move on Palou. I was actually going to try to go underneath him. When I was making that move off of four, I could see that Louis was sort of there, but it was still green.

I didn’t see Louis until Palou went right. As soon as he went right, then I saw him coming across the track. I thought just… There wasn’t much else to do. If I go right, I was going to go into Palou. I had a big jump of speed on him. He had the advantage of seeing him before I did.

Yeah, just bad timing. Really bad timing.

Q. What is it about this place that you feel like you enjoy so much or really is great for your driving style?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: This is such a marquee INDYCAR track. If you want to go to a place to see what an INDYCAR can do, it’s like IMS and Road America. This is the road course version of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to me.

It’s got everything you want: huge straightaway, big high-speed corners, good brake zones, really good race-ability. It’s, like, awesome when you show up here. This is where you want to race in INDYCAR.

I love that about the place. I think it suits my style. I always like high-speed stuff. We always have great cars here, have for the last 10 years. Makes a big difference.

Q. I think all but two of the races here have been won from the top five spots on the grid. Something like 15 cars within a second here in first practice. How much is the race going to be won or lost tomorrow?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: It doesn’t make a difference. I mean, you can’t ignore the statistics, right, that you’re speaking of, but I don’t think it’s won or lost just on Saturday. How many times have we seen in INDYCAR that you can make something happen from all the way in the back.

It’s important. You want to start up front. But it’s not the end all, be all. First thing’s first. Let’s try and qualify well, to your point. It just makes our job easier on race day hopefully.

I think we’ll be in a good spot.

THE MODERATOR: Josef, thanks for coming over.

Collet Leads Opening Practice at Road America; Hauger, Hughes in Tow

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Friday, June 20, 2025) – Road America is one of the biggest tests of car performance and driver skill of any circuit, so it came as no surprise Friday that the top three drivers in the INDY NXT by Firestone standings moved to the fore during the series’ first practice for the Grand Prix at Road America.

Caio Collet led the practice for the INDYCAR development series, turning a top lap of 1 minute, 53.1345 seconds in the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car. 2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet is third in the standings, 78 points behind leader Dennis Hauger of Andretti Global.

Brazilian Collet topped the charts despite turning just 10 laps on the 4.014-mile natural-terrain road course, as his team had to replace a malfunctioning starter midway through the 45-minute session.

“We started off very, very good,” Brazilian driver Collet said. “The team did a very good job. We had a little issue in the middle of the session, but they were able to assess that very quickly, and we were back on track.”

Rookie Hauger was second at 1:53.5279 in the No. 28 Nammo car. His Andretti Global rookie teammate, Hughes, was third at 1:53.8290 in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship machine. Hughes is second in the standings, 19 points behind Hauger.

Veteran James Roe of Andretti Global aimed to jump-start his disappointing season by ending up fourth at 1:53.8357 in the No. 29 Topcon car. Andretti Global drivers ended up taking four of the top five spots, as Salvador de Alba rounded out the top five at 1:53.9677 in the No. 27 Grupo Indi machine.

Collet admitted his experience in INDY NXT machinery gave him a slight advantage over Hauger and Hughes. Formula 2 veteran Hauger never has raced at this iconic circuit, and Hughes only has competed here in lower junior categories. But Collet doesn’t expect his edge to last long.

“When we start with new tires, if you know the track and everything, you can start with an advantage,” Collet said. “But I expect the guys, especially Dennis and Lochie, to come up and be with me going for the top tomorrow. It will be tight, as always, and we need to keep working.”

Up next is the second practice at 10 a.m. ET Saturday, followed by qualifying at 1:30 p.m. ET. The 20-lap race starts at 11 a.m. ET Sunday. FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network are providing live coverage of all sessions.
