Extreme E and Rosberg X Racing join forces to kick off legacy initiatives in Sardinia

5 December 2022, London: Extreme E and Rosberg X Racing (RXR) have joined up together to start the restoration of an area in Sardinia, Italy, which had been ravaged by wildfires in 2021.

This is a collaboration between the series and RXR following the NEOM Island X Prix double-header, co-organised by the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) and Regione Sardegna, earlier this year. The initiative, which includes Allianz, Life Terra and MEDSEA Foundation as part of the collaboration, is a further demonstration of Extreme E’s legacy programme in Sardinia, having raced there in each of its two seasons, as well as RXR’s Driven By Purpose campaign.

As part of the visit, the team’s Founder and CEO Nico Rosberg was in attendance alongside RXR driver, Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky, and Professor Peter Wadhams from the series’ Scientific Committee.

Also present were Giambattista Ledda, the Mayor of Sennariolo, Alessio Satta, President of the MEDSEA Foundation, Sven Kallen, Founder of Life Terra, and Giulio Pes di San Vittorio, Head of the ACI in Sardinia.

The ambition of the programme is to restore over four hectares of soil and plant 4,000 trees on the island of Sardinia, which has been heavily affected by wildfires.

What’s more, the one millionth tree of the Life Terra project launched earlier this year to help restore the area, was planted by Rosberg. The 2016 Formula One World Champion also received the Life Terra Climate Award in the category of ‘Most Impactful Sustainability Entrepreneur’ for his continuous commitment to environmental causes.

Nico Rosberg, Founder and CEO of RXR, said: “Rosberg X Racing isn’t just about racing. We are in Sardinia to promote an important message, alongside Extreme E and our partners Allianz, Life Terra and the MEDSEA Foundation.

“Through our Driven By Purpose campaign we support social and environmental projects at each of the series’ race locations. With our help, Sardinia can come back to its natural beauty and I couldn’t be prouder of this vision.”

During 2021, devastating fires in Sardinia destroyed 20,000 hectares of land, displaced over 1,000 people and killed around 30 million bees. The calamity resulted in incalculable damage to thousands of livelihoods, as well as to nature, including damaging water quality in the ocean. Wildfires such as these across the world are responsible for 20 per cent of total global CO2 emissions and cost $5bn to fight.

More than 30 local school children were invited to the tree planting which took place in the Sennariolo region of Sardinia, where they and attending guests were given a welcome talk on the importance of restoring the impacted area by Professor Wadhams.

After accepting the Life Terra Climate Award, Rosberg and Åhlin-Kottulinsky headed to the site of the restoration project where prior to the tree-planting they received a talk about the significance of soil restoration due to the wildfires.

The project has been undertaken to bring back native species of both bushes and trees, adding additional biodiversity to accelerate the recovery of vegetation in the area, and ensuring an ecosystem more balanced and resilient to the negative effects of climate change

Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky, RXR, added: “A key reason we exist as team RXR is to drive awareness, educate and help tackle climate change. For me, the most important race that I will ever participate in is the race to save our planet.

“Even though we can only have a small impact, we are hoping to inspire our fans and followers to do their part, too. Seeing the future generation join us today, gives me great hope.”

Extreme E has continued to help restore the historic olive groves lost to the wildfires. Ahead of the NEOM Island X Prix in July, the series teamed up with Vodafone Business, Extreme E’s Technology Communications Partner, to launch a fire prevention campaign within the area of Montiferru.

RXR’s efforts in Sardinia is also crucial to the team’s Driven By Purpose campaign, an initiative that supports sustainability projects at each of the locations the team visits and a key driver in RXR’s wider aim of operating as a climate positive team, raising awareness of the fight against climate change, social injustice, and inequality.

Professor Peter Wadhams, Extreme E’s Scientific Committee, added: “We are here in Sardinia to look at the science which has been carried out relating to brushfires. The area near to where the racing has been held has been an area of very severe wildfires that have destroyed a lot of the forest including olive trees. We are trying to study what the impact of that is and what can be done to protect against future fires.”

Sven Kallen, Founder of Life Terra, said: “We’re very pleased to collaborate with this important nature restoration project in an area so affected by wildfire. It coincides with an important milestone for Life Terra and we are very grateful to Nico Rosberg to have planted our tree number 1 million. We’re currently planting in 13 EU countries and this project is a significant contribution to accelerate European climate action.”

Extreme E will return to Sardinia for Season 3, where the series will undertake further developments of its legacy initiatives in the region.

Lola, Chevron, Oreca and Porsche Teams Victorious in Seventh Running of the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour This Weekend at Sebring International Raceway

  • Marco Fumagalli and Toni Seiler Team Up for Repeat HSR Classic 12 Hour Run Group A Victories in Waite-N-See Motorsports 1969 No. 26 Lola T160
  • Dominating Run Group B Race Gives Gray Gregory, Ethan Shippert and Randy Buck a Record-Extending Sixth “HSR Classics” Victory in the Phil Reilly and Co. 1974 No. 29 Chevron B26
  • Matthew Miller and James French Secure First “HSR Classics” Victory in Run Group C in Ideal Motorsports 2014 No. 41 Oreca FLM09 Le Mans Prototype Challenge “PC” Car
  • Brent Asplundh Avenges Narrow 2021 Loss With Convincing Run Group D Victory in the Kelly-Moss Road and Race (KMR) 2015 No. 85 Porsche 991 Cup

SEBRING, Florida (December 4, 2022) – A close and competitive seventh running of the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour came to a grand conclusion Sunday afternoon at Sebring International Raceway where an even split of two repeat and two first-time race winners reached the top step of the podium after two days of vintage and historic racing competition on the legendary 3.74-mile road course.

Following a symbolic 12 hours of competition from Noon to Midnight EST on Saturday, Sunday featured the fourth and final rounds of competition for all four Run Groups to decide the winners of the 12 Hours of Sebring tribute race.

For the first time in the history of the “HSR Classics” races at Daytona and Sebring, the four Run Group leaders at the halfway point of the Classic 12 Saturday night all held on for their respective race wins. The victories were far from easy, however, as only one competitor swept all four of their Run Group rounds and each had to overcome the myriad of endurance-race issues that only the demanding Sebring International Raceway road course delivers.

Marco Fumagalli went a perfect two-for-two in HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour victories with a strong race from start to finish for the Run Group A victory this weekend in the 1969 No. 26 Lola T160 prepared by Waite-N-See Motorsports (pictured below). The win followed Fumagalli’s 2019 Group A victory in his debut and only previous appearance in the HSR Classic 12 Hour.

This year, Fumagalli brought his friend and 2018 Classic 12 Hour Group A winner Toni Seiler along for the victory. Seiler took the green flag in Saturday afternoon’s opening round but only completed four laps before a terminal mechanical issue put his Waite-N-See 1969 No. 20 Lola T165 on the sidelines. Fumagalli graciously let Seiler share the race-leading No. 26 with him in Sunday’s fourth and final round to allow the friends and teammates to each celebrate repeat HSR Classic 12 Hour victories.

Run Group B saw a record-extending sixth HSR Classics victory by the Phil Reilly and Co. 1974 No. 26 Chevron B26 (pictured at top) piloted by car owner/driver Gray Gregory and his teammates Randy Buck and Ethan Shippert. The always-quick Chevron was driven to the win in three of this weekend’s four Group B rounds to seal the fourth HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour victory in five years for the No. 26 team and drivers. Gregory and his teammates also have two career victories in the HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA, including a win in last month’s Classic 24 to go along with their first victory at Daytona International Speedway in 2020. The two Daytona wins combined with this year’s Sebring victory and three-straight Classic 12 Hour triumphs from 2018 through 2020 make the No. 26 Chevron team the career leader in HSR Classics victories for a single team and driver lineup.

The 2022 Daytona and Sebring sweep also made up for a rare shutout for the Chevron team last year in HSR Classics competition. Another Chevron beat the No. 26 to the line at Daytona and the team suffered a late loss at the Classic 12 when something broke on the Chevron at speed heading into Sebring’s turn seven chicane section. Shippert was uninjured in the incident but the determination to literally rebuild and rebound from 2021’s challenging HSR Classics paid off with this year’s double victory.

A first-time winner was the Ideal Motorsports 2014 No. 41 Oreca FLM09 Le Mans Prototype Challenge “PC” car of owner/driver Matthew Miller and his teammate James French. Miller and French won Friday’s one hour B.R.M. Endurance Challenge race at Sebring and that victory paved the way for the duo’s biggest win yet in historic and vintage competition in Run Group C.

Miller and French battled with the 2018 No. 17 Oreca 07 LMP2 of Stuart Wiltshire and former 24 Hours of Le Mans and HSR Classics race winner Richard Bradley throughout the race. More than once French reeled the newer “P2” car back in as he and Miller won all three Group C rounds on Saturday. Sunday’s fourth and final round went to Wiltshire and Bradley but the No. 41 took the checkered flag 27 seconds ahead of the No. 17 in the cumulative standings to seal the overall Group C victory.

The most dominating victory of the Classic 12 weekend was secured by first-time HSR Classics winner Brent Asplundh who was determined to put a narrow loss in Run Group D in last year’s race behind him. Asplundh finished first in three of four Group D rounds in 2021 but was just edged for the overall victory in the final standings.

This year, Asplundh left no room for error and was the only driver competing in the Classic 12 who swept all four of his Run Group rounds. Asplundh took the checkered flag Sunday in his Kelly-Moss Road and Race (KMR) 2015 No. 85 Porsche 991 Cup car a full lap ahead of the second-place finisher, who just happened to be his son Griffith Asplundh in his KMR 2016 No. 087 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

The top finishing GT competitors in Run Groups A, B and C included Alain Ruede in his 2002/1965 No. 79 Shelby CSX (Group A), Kenneth Greenberg in his 1996 No. 836 Porsche 993 RSR prepared by Air Power Racing (Group B) and Thomas Herb and Ryan Dalziel in Herb’s Fall-Line Motorsports 2017 No. 16 Mercedes-AMG GT3 (Group C). Herb and Dalziel secured top GT honors in Run Group C for the second-straight year in addition to also scoring the overall group victory in 2021.

Each overall Run Group winner was presented with a special-edition B.R.M. Chronographes watch commissioned specifically for the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour. Other presentations included the now traditional Best-Plane and Best-Car awards that were presented Sunday just before this year’s lineup of amazing vintage and historic aircraft taxied back to Sebring International Raceway for departure after being on display for two days at the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network. Attending pilots and their families select the best team or race car of the event while participating HSR competitors and officials vote on their favorite plane.

This year’s Best-Plane Award went to Tony Greene and Amy Greene for their fan-favorite 1973 Bulldog 120, a British-built plane manufactured by Scottish Aviation LTD. The aviation contingent in turn selected the “squadron” of colorful 1980s-era Porsche 944 race cars driven by Ray Shaffer, Ramsey Potts and Colin Dougherty and prepared by DAS Sport. Shaffer and Potts accepted the award on behalf of their teammates.

In addition to Seiler’s original Lola exiting early, other HSR Classic 12 Hour past winners and contenders encountered issues. Last year’s Run Group B winner Jim Farley finished second in his RM Motorsports 1978 No. 98 Lola T298 in two of Saturday’s rounds but an electrical issue in the other race knocked the Lola’s taillights out of commission and Farley out of contention for the repeat.

The Team Mean/KMW Motorsports 1978 No. 94 Chevron B23/36 of Ryan Harrold and Kevin Wheeler won Saturday’s second Run Group B round only to pull off early in the third round and retire to the paddock with an undisclosed issue.

The 2023 HSR racing calendar begins right back at Sebring International Raceway, March 24 – 26, with the annual season-opening HSR Spring Fling. Please visit www.HSRRace.com for more information on the 2023 schedule.

Cypress Hill will perform at NASCAR’s Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum

Legendary hip-hop Artists from South Gate will set stage for main event on Feb. 5

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 4, 2022) – If the roar of the engines won’t make NASCAR fans “Insane in the Brain” on Sunday, Feb. 5, a group of hip-hop legends from South Gate will put them over the edge.

NASCAR announced today that Cypress Hill will perform during the 2023 Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum. They will take the stage after the last-chance qualifiers and before the main event inside the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. FOX will also air one of their songs live on the national broadcast, as NASCAR celebrates the beginning of its historic 75th anniversary season with an exhibition for the ages in the heart of Los Angeles.

“What a tremendous addition to the 2023 Busch Light Clash,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s senior vice president for racing development and strategy. “Cypress Hill are cultural icons, not only in Los Angeles but around the world. We can’t wait for them to perform for our fans during this historic event.”

Naming themselves after a local street in Los Angeles, Cypress Hill burst on the scene in 1991 with the release of their self-titled debut album. They followed that up with Black Sunday in the summer of 1993, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200, garnered three GRAMMY® Award nominations and went triple platinum in the U.S. As a result, Cypress Hill became the first rap group to have two albums in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 charts at the same time and are the first Latino-American hip-hop group to achieve platinum and multi-platinum success.

Since the release of Black Sunday, Cypress Hill have released seven more albums and made history once again in 2019 when the group was honored with their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their music continues to entertain and inspire audiences worldwide, and the documentary “Insane in the Brain” released on Showtime this year introduced the group to a new generation.

“NASCAR drivers have the mentality of taking it to the limit on every lap, and we take the same approach with our music,” said Cypress Hill co-founder Sen Dog. “We’re excited to have NASCAR return to our back yard, and we look forward to bringing some South Gate style to all of the NASCAR fans at the LA Coliseum.”

Additional Busch Light Clash performers will be announced in the coming weeks, as NASCAR prepares for the highly anticipated sequel to one of the most celebrated events in NASCAR history. The inaugural 2022 event featured performances by international superstars Ice Cube, Pitbull and DJ Skee.

Yet it’s the racing that makes the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum the most unique event on the NASCAR schedule. The 2023 season-opening exhibition will once again feature the stars of the NASCAR Cup Series competing on a temporary, quarter-mile asphalt track nestled inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Joey Logano won the inaugural event earlier this year en route to winning the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series championship.

Tickets for the 2023 Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum begin at $65, and kids 12-and-under are $10. Those are the same prices charged for this year’s inaugural showcase. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets now while supplies last by visiting www.nascarclash.com.

Groundbreaking for track construction is set for Dec. 15.

Nighttime the Right Time as Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour Hits Halfway at Sebring International Raceway

  • Marco Fumagalli Sweeps Opening Run Group A Rounds to Lead at Mid-Race in Waite-N-See Motorsports 1969 No. 26 Lola T160
  • Phil Reilly and Co. 1974 No. 29 Chevron B26 Leads Run Group B with Gray Gregory, Ethan Shippert and Randy Buck
  • Matthew Miller and James French Sweep Opening Run Group C Rounds in Ideal Motorsports 2014 No. 41 Oreca FLM09 Le Mans Prototype Challenge “PC” Car
  • Brent Asplundh Leads the Way Again in Run Group D in Kelly-Moss Road and Race (KMR) 2015 No. 85 Porsche 991 Cup

SEBRING, Florida (December 3, 2022) – Nighttime is the Right Time at the 2022 Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour where sundown has done little to slow the fast pace of the seventh running of the 12 Hours of Sebring tribute race that will see the competition continue until just before Midnight EST.

With all four Run Groups having completed their first two rounds just before 8 p.m. EST, leaders have emerged in all four Run Groups while some early contenders and defending winners have encountered trouble on the always challenging 3.74-mile Sebring International Raceway road course.

Marco Fumagalli has returned to the HSR Classic 12 for the first time since securing the Run Group A victory in 2019 and is halfway home to a second win in the 1969 No. 26 Lola T160 prepared by Waite-N-See Motorsports. Fumagalli has built a nearly 90-second lead over the second place 1968 No. 24 Chevron B8 of Till Bechtolsheimer. Fumagalli won Group A Round Two after Bechtolsheimer was first to the line in Round One.

Fumagalli will close out Saturday’s on-track schedule in the Lola but he and the Waite-N-See team may hand the T160 over to teammate Toni Seiler for Sunday’s fourth and final round. Seiler took the green flag in the Waite-N-See 1969 No. 20 Lola T165 only to slow with a mechanical failure just four laps in the opening Group A round. Seiler won the Classic 12 in Group A in 2018 driving a Lola T70.

Run Group B was a tight battle between a pair of Chevron teams that split the opening rounds. Ethan Shippert drove the Phil Reilly and Co. 1974 No. 29 Chevron B26 to the Round One victory and joined car owner/driver Gray Gregory and their co-driver Randy Buck in holding a 10-second lead at the halfway point over the Team Mean/KMW Motorsports 1978 No. 94 Chevron B23/36 of Ryan Harrold and Kevin Wheeler that won Round Two.

Ideal Motorsports teammates Matthew Miller and James French co-drove to victory in the B.R.M Endurance Challenge one-hour race on Friday but have moved closer to an even bigger endurance race prize with the Run Group C lead at the Classic 12’s halfway point. Miller and French have built a 45-second lead in the Ideal Motorsports 2014 No. 41 Oreca FLM09 Le Mans Prototype Challenge “PC” after sweeping both of the Group C opening rounds.

An all-family and all Kelly-Moss Road and Race (KMR) battle has emerged in Run Group D where father-and-son KMR teammates Brent Asplundh and Griffith Asplundh run one-two at the halfway point. Brent Asplundh won both opening rounds in the KMR 2015 No. 85 Porsche 991 Cup car and hit the halfway point a full two laps ahead of his son and nearest challenger Griffith Asplundh who wheels a KMR 2016 No. 087 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. The elder Asplundh swept three of four Group D rounds in the 2021 Classic 12 only to narrowly lose the overall victory, but his current two-lap cushion on the field has him in a much more comfortable position this year.

In addition to Seiler’s No. 20 Lola retiring early, other past HSR Classic 12 Hour winners encountered problems in the opening half. Reigning Run Group B winner Jim Farley finished a close second in his RM Motorsports 1978 No. 98 Lola T298 in Saturday’s opening race only to encounter electrical issues with the Lola during Round 2. The Lola lost its tail lights as darkness fell and was forced to the paddock for repairs. The delay cost Farley and the RM team a full eight laps but they are determined to press on in the second half of the race tonight and Sunday morning.

Classic Sebring 12 Hour Rounds 3 for all four Groups fill out Saturday night’s schedule until just before Midnight EST.

The schedule picks up again Sunday at 11 a.m. EST when the fourth and final segments for all Groups will be held in succession to bring the 2022 Classic Sebring 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network, to a conclusion.

Spectator tickets for the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour are available exclusively at the Sebring International Raceway ticket office at the main building throughout the event. Learn more at www.HSRtickets.com.

Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour Underway at Sebring International Raceway

  • Seventh Running of HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour Tribute Race On-Track Until Midnight EST
  • Season-Long HSR Series and Championships Conclude Friday with a Competitive Run of First-Time and Repeat HSR Sebring Historics Winners
  • Vintage Aircraft on Display in the HSR Paddock False Grid Through Sunday at 10 a.m. EST

SEBRING, Florida (December 3, 2022) – The 2022 Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Sebring 12 Hour is underway at Sebring International where four different Run Groups of vintage and historic sports cars from the last 60-plus years will compete in a non-stop rotation of races until Midnight EST. The overall HSR Classic 12 Hour winners will be determined after a fourth and final round for all four Run Groups beginning at 11 a.m. EST on Sunday.

Officially titled the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network, the five-day celebration features historic and vintage sports car racing and a “fly-in,” parade and weekend display of military and civilian aircraft from the last half century and WWII.

The HSR Classic Sebring is a tribute race to the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring and the facility’s rich aviation history. Hendricks Field was a civil and military air field on which the famous 12-hour sports car race has been run for nearly 70 years.

The schedule through Friday also featured the HSR Sebring Historics that was the finale for HSR’s season-long series and championships. Yesterday’s Sebring Historics big winners included a pair of Prototype-class teammates that swept this year’s B.R.M. Chronographes Endurance Challenge races at Sebring and a Porsche driver who has stayed perfect on the Sebring weekend so far with three-straight feature race victories.

The overall and Prototype-class B.R.M. winner in the one-hour race for Prototype, Historic and GT Modern (GTM) cars was the Ideal Racing 2014 No. 41 Oreca FLM09 Le Mans Prototype Challenge “PC” car (pictured above) co-driven by Matthew Miller and James French. Miller and French also won the B.R.M. race in the season-opening HSR Spring Fling weekend at Sebring last April.

Todd Treffert scored convincing Porsche-class and overall victories Friday in the Sasco Sports International/American Challenge finale in his Speedconcepts 1974 No. 14 Porsche 911 IROC prepared by the 901 Shop. The victory was Treffert’s third feature race win this weekend after also securing both the overall and GT Classic (GTC) B.R.M. Endurance Challenge and HSR Classic RS Cup victories Thursday.

Friday’s other feature race winners included Vincent Barletta who took GT Modern (GTM) class honors and a solid second overall in the B.R.M. race in the Turner Motorsport 2016 No. 96 BMW M6 GT3 .

The B.R.M. Historic-class victory Friday went to Benjamin Myers in his Wolf Motorsports 2001 No. 29 Carbir CS2 sports 2000.

Additional Sasco Sports winners included former NASCAR race winner and qualifying dominator “Front Row” Joe Nemechek (pictured center below) who guest drove the Steve Cullman-owned 1970 No. 74 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Trans-Am car prepared by Olthoff Racing. Nemechek has also picked up several WeatherTech sprint race victories this weekend competing in Group 8 in his NEMCO Motorsports 2006 No. 8 Toyota Camry.

The Sasco Sports International-class winner was Hervey Parke in his 1965 No. 11 Ginetta G4 (pictured at top) prepared by Michael’s Vintage Racing.

A Friday highlight was the third place overall and second-place Prototype-class finish in the B.R.M. Endurance Challenge race by 78-year-old teammates Travis Engen and Divina Galica in Engen’s GMT Racing 2005 No. 2 Audi R8 LMP. Engen is an HSR fixture and regular winner in the pristine Audi LMP, but Galica was making her first race start and podium appearance since last competing at Sebring in 2008.

An English-born multi-sport athlete who is a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), Galica is a four-time Olympian in skiing competition who twice served as Captain of the British Women’s Olympic Ski Team. Her skiing popularity led to a celebrity race invite at Oulton Park where her knack for speed – she had briefly held the downhill ski speed record at 125 mph – quicky transferred to four-wheel competition and a career on and off the track for which she is best known here in the U.S.

Galica drove everything from Formula 1 to Formula Renault, Formula Vauxhall Lotus, Formula 2 and more, but she also excelled in the business side of motorsports in management positions with Skip Barber Racing and iRacing.com and instructing for the Bertil Roos Racing School.

Another Friday feature was the Vintage Plane Arrival and Parade to the Sebring International Raceway paddock where this year’s lineup of classic and WWII era planes will be on display through Sunday morning.

A locally-based classic plane making its Classic Sebring debut is the immaculate 1931 Stearman 4CM-1 Junior Speedmail (No. 4036) from the Alan Jay Automotive Network and piloted and co-owned by Al DiGiulio. A true “barn find,” the Stearman was taken out of service after a landing accident in 1933 just two years after it was manufactured in Wichita, Kansas by the Stearman Aircraft Corporation.

Stored in a barn for nearly the next 50 years, the damaged and disassembled plane was sold in 1982 and included the landing gear, tail, damaged fuselage and the all-important data plate. Ownership changed hands over the next 20 years before a certificate or airworthiness was issued with tail number NC488W in 2004. The first post-restoration flight – and the first for the Stearman since 1933 – took place in 2005 and NC488W was acquired by the Alan Jay organization and DiGiuilo just last year.

DiGiulio was at the controls during Friday’s traditional Parade of Planes from nearby Sebring Regional Airport to the HSR paddock and the VIP passenger in the Stearman was John Doonan, President of HSR parent company IMSA. Doonan hopped out of the plane after DiGiulio parked the Stearman among the other aircraft on display and immediately called his friend and close colleague Alan Jay Wildstein to thank him for the incredible experience. The Alan Jay Automotive Network is a longtime partner of Sebring International Raceway and has been the presenting sponsor of the HSR Sebring Classic 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Networks since the race’s inaugural running in 2016.

SEXTON GATLIN RACING ENDS THE 2022 SEASON AT THE TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX

(Lakeside, CA, December 2, 2022) Nine months after it opened the season at the Imperial Valley Raceway, Sexton Gatlin Racing brought the curtain down on its 2022 campaign when Grant Sexton competed in the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series portion of the 81st Turkey Night Grand Prix at the Ventura Raceway. The historic race was contested in front of a near-sellout crowd and watched by others around the world on the Flo Racing Network.

Dating back to 1934, the Turkey Night Grand Prix is the third oldest race in the United States, trailing only the Indianapolis 500 and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Some of the biggest names in USA racing have won Turkey Night including A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Tony Bettenhausen, Tony Stewart, and Kyle Larson. Just to say that a driver has competed in the Turkey Night Grand Prix is a feather in the racer’s cap and an honor. Sexton’s participation in the sprint car portion of this year’s race adds the SGR driver’s name to the long list of racers who have competed in the coveted event.

The Lakeside, California native’s first TNGP action came on Friday in a 10-lap heat. Starting on the outside of the front row, Sexton was third entering turn one on the first lap. He slipped back to fourth at the end of the opening circuit but racing on the track where he won the main event in his first-ever sprint car start, he raced back to third before the checkered flag. Not long thereafter, the 18-year-old came back onto the track known as “The Best Little Dirt Track In America” for his 12-lap qualifier. In that race, he started sixth. The 2021 POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car champion advanced one spot forward to fifth on the second lap. He drove a smooth race the rest of the way and was still in fifth at the end.

The teenage racer gave a good account of himself all night by racing fast and smoothly against his more experienced sprint car competitors. More importantly, he stayed out of trouble on a night when it seemed like there was carnage every other lap.

Saturday saw the cars line up based on points accumulated on Friday. Sexton’s good performance saw him start on the inside of row three in one of the 12-lap B mains. All he had to do was finish in the top six to earn his ticket into the 30-lap Turkey Night Grand Prix main event. Early on, the teen was shuffled back as far as seventh but an aggressive move on lap two saw him move all the way back up to fourth. After a restart on lap three, he got sideways in turn four and got punted by another car. A quick recovery meant that he only lost one position back to fifth. He stayed in fifth until there were two laps to go and it looked like he was going to transfer into the main event. However, just in front of him in turn three, two cars tangled leaving the young driver with nowhere to go. Try as he might, he could not miss the mess, and he became involved in it. Unfortunately, the pretty #22 car suffered enough damage to prevent it from restarting. So, what looked like a sure transfer to the A main ended up with a frustrating 13th-place finish. It also brought an end to SGR’s 2022 season.

The Turkey Night Grand Prix closed the books on a highly successful season for Sexton Gatlin Racing. Patriarch Brent Sexton won the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series championship. In addition, in 29 races, the team racked up an astounding 19 main event victories. That kind of success does not come easy, and SGR is ready to begin the hard work for another successful year in 2023. If you or your company is interested in becoming a partner with this front-running team, please call (619) 454-6945 or E-mail mailto:sextonfire@cox.net or mailto:sextonfire@gmail.com.

Sexton/Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2022 season possible. Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, Johnny Motorhead, Troy Dirt, Victory Graphix, Swift Powdercoat, Maxima Oil, Automated Interior, and an extra special thanks to Scotty and Jimmy Keys.

Wright Motorsports Confirms VOLT® Lighting IMSA WeatherTech GTD Entry

BATAVIA, Ohio. (December 2, 2022) – Hot on the heels of winning the 2022 Michelin Pilot Challenge team and driver championship, VOLT® Racing, with Porsche Cup winner Alan Brynjolfsson and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Champion Trent Hindman will advance to the IMSA WeatherTech GTD class in 2023, partnering with Wright Motorsports. The pair will be racing brand-new machinery, the Wright Motorsports No. 77 VOLT® Lighting Porsche 911 GT3 R (type 992), in the iconic electric yellow and black VOLT® Racing livery.

Following Wright’s success in securing the 2021 Michelin Pilot Challenge championship with drivers Ryan Hardwick and Jan Heylen, VOLT® Racing switched support structures and joined the Wright Motorsports family for the 2022 season, racing in the stepping-stone development series for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The two brands gelled immediately, producing a second-place finish at Sebring International Raceway in the effort’s second race together. At Round Three at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, a calculated fuel run made from the pit box and with expert driving by Brynjolfsson and Hindman brought the team their first win of the season, their third as a pair. The group secured the overall championship title at the season finale at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, a title Wright Motorsports clinched in 2021 with Hardwick and Heylen, racing a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

As the VOLT® Racing squad steps up to join Wright’s WeatherTech GTD effort, Wright will bring Brynjolfsson back to Porsche, a brand that Team Owner John Wright and his Ohio-based team have been representing for over two decades. In 2021, Wright Motorsports secured nine team and driver titles racing Porsche machinery, also securing the German brand a manufacturer’s title. That same year, driver Jan Heylen completed 24 races with Wright, and with four wins and 19 podiums, he won the Porsche Cup, an award given annually to the most successful non-factory Porsche driver in the world. The symbiotic relationship between Wright and Porsche Motorsport North America has proven to be one of the longest-running and most successful in customer racing, known for superior consistency, and flawless performance. This relationship will be greatly beneficial to Brynjolfsson, who also won the 2019 Porsche Cup.

As the premier sports car racing championship in North America, the move from Michelin Pilot Challenge’s GS class to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be an exciting new test for Brynjolfsson, a 55-year-old gentleman racer. Created for both professionals and amateurs to race in the same class, GTD provides a competitive arena for Pro/Am pairings to race at North America’s best circuits. Currently slated to be one of just a few full-season bronze drivers, Brynjolfsson will be competing against some of the top-rated drivers in the world with long time co-driver Hindman by his side for a sixth year.

At just 27 years old, Hindman is on a four-year championship-winning streak, having captured the IMSA WeatherTech GTD championship (2019), the 2020 GT World Challenge America title (2020), the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup (2021), and most recently the 2022 Michelin Pilot Challenge championship (2022). His return to Wright in the GTD class comes after he earned four podium finishes for the team in 2021, racing alongside former Porsche Factory Driver Patrick Long.

The 2023 schedule will include 11 races, featuring the usual composition of four endurance races and seven sprint races. The four endurance rounds, the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen, and Motul Petit Le Mans will again include 52 hours of racing. Six of the seven sprint rounds will clock in at 2 hours, 40 minutes, while the Grand Prix of Long Beach in April will run at one hour, 40 minutes. The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Belle Isle rounds were removed from the schedule, but the IMSA Battle on the Bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be a new event, running in September as the final sprint round before the Petit Le Mans conclusion.

The team will announce the two endurance driver additions at a later date. Meanwhile, the team is running full speed ahead into preparations for the first event of the year, the Roar Before the 24, the first full-series test which will also set the grid for the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Wright Motorsports will make further announcements in the coming weeks for additional racing efforts.

DRIVER QUOTES

Alan Brynjolfsson

I am happy to announce I will be racing with Trent Hindman and Wright Motorsports in the IMSA WeatherTech Series for the full season. We will be piloting the brand-new type-992 Porsche 911 GT3 R sporting our iconic VOLT® Racing livery.

We won the IMSA GS Championship last year and it is time to move up the GTD! I’m totally stoked to fulfill a longtime goal of racing in WeatherTech, America’s top series for professional sports car racing. Racing against the best drivers in the world is going to be a mega challenge but one that I have been preparing a long time for and a step I don’t take lightly. At 55 years old, I will be the oldest full season GTD/GT3 driver and possibly one of just a few full-season bronze GTD drivers. That is a big challenge to overcome but it gives me pride and motivation. I have a lot to learn and look forward to my debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Hopefully I’ll have a lot of fans supporting “The Old-Man-Rookie!”

To win in WeatherTech you need it all—great car, team and drivers and we have that combo. Porsche-Wright-Hindman. It is the best combination of talent and machinery I could dream of. I want to thank John Wright and all the guys and gals at Wright Motorsports, Trent Hindman my longtime co-driver, Volker Holzmeyer President and CEO Porsche Motorsports North America for making this happen, and my driver manager/wife Trish for supporting me in my dreams.

Trent Hindman

Alan and I have been working together for five years. Throughout that time, we’ve won races, lost others, but more importantly we’ve become as strong of a team as you can find in the Michelin Pilot Challenge, and now I’m proud to say, WeatherTech Sportscar Championship paddock.

The timing for the step up to GTD could not be better; we’re fresh off a GS championship victory and Alan’s game has never been stronger. We’ve got a Wright Motorsports prepared VOLT® Porsche 911 GT3 R, which will always be a force to be reckoned with, and the same phenomenal team around us that brought us to the 2022 Michelin Pilot Challenge title.

A massive thank you to Alan and the entire Brynjolfsson family, who are as committed to this endeavor as us drivers are, Johnny Wright and his incredibly talented Wright Motorsports team, and of course our friends at Porsche Motorsport North America, who have built us the equipment to go ahead and fight for WeatherTech race victories in 2023.

Wright Motorsports

Wright Motorsports is the premier Porsche race engineering facility in Ohio and a multi-series and international racing team known for superb car preparation, expert race strategy, and driver development. Located in Batavia, Ohio, it is owned and directed by John Wright, a certified Porsche factory-trained technician. As a crew chief John Wright has played a key role in winning eight driver and seven team championships in World Challenge, IMSA (ALMS) and the Grand-Am Rolex Series. Wright Motorsports won the team championship in Porsche GT3 Cup USA in 2012, 2013, and 2015, and went on to win the Pirelli World Challenge Overall, Sprint, Team, and Manufacturer’s titles in 2017. In 2020, the team captured the GT World Challenge America Am championship. In 2021, Wright Motorsports had a wildly successful season, capturing nine championships across their five racing efforts.

“SHUGAH” SHANE SEXTON GETS A THIRD-PLACE FINISH ON LAST WEEKEND OF THE SEASON AT PLACERVILLE

Shane Sexton with his Friday night third place trophy at Placerville. Sexton photo.

(Warner Springs, CA, December 1, 2022) Shane Sexton brought the curtain down on his 2022 racing season at the three-night Hangtown 100 at the Placerville Speedway. Driving for Brian Fonseca, whom he has teamed with for two victories in 2022, the 18-year-old driver had a third-place finish on the second night on the quarter-mile banked red clay Oval.

Night #1

A stellar field of 26 cars showed up for the race that was co-sanctioned by the California Lightning Sprint Car Series, and Northern California’s Bay Cities Racing Association. The affable 18-year-old got off to a good start when he recorded the fourth-fastest qualifying time with a sizzling lap of 13.751. That effort placed him in the first 8-lap heat race of the three-night affair. Fortunately, that heat result did not resonate on the entire weekend as Sexton started in the 5th place spot and ended up 7th. He followed the heat up by starting the 25-lap main in 10th in Fonseca’s #3F. He moved the car forward four spots and finished six.

Night #2

Sexton, who makes his home in Warner Springs, California, had another good qualifying effort on night number two. That time he recorded the fifth-fastest lap at 13.644. Things went much better for his heat race on the second night when he began in fifth and finished fourth in the quick 8-lapper. Not long thereafter, the driver who picked up preliminary main event wins at Washington’s Clay Cup and the Cal Cup at the Lemoore Speedway was fired up and ready for the main event. He started on the inside of the second row and 100 turns later, he crossed the finish line in third place. It was his 7th top-five finish of the 2022 season.

It was an impressive finish considering that the condition of the track for the main caught the team by surprise. “I did not think it was going to be this dry,” Sexton explained. “We probably could have went a little bit tighter. Hats off to my guys, Brian Fonseca, and my dad. They work their tails off throughout the night. We have had some success all around the country. We normally do not do the local stuff for Brian, but he called and asked if I wanted to drive it and I could not say no. Third place on the podium is not too bad.”

Night #3

Hopes were high for the Sexton/Fonseca duo in the final race of the year. Coming off the previous night’s podium finish combined with their success in big events this year, there were plenty of reasons to believe that the night was going to be special. Those expectations grew higher when Sexton started and finished second in his 12-lap qualifier. That put him on the outside of row two for the feature. However, this is no fairy tale and the main event did not have a happy ending. On lap six, Sexton tangled with another car in turn one. While it was not a heavy crash, the damage done was enough to knock him out of the race. He ended up with a very frustrating 18th-place finish.

While the 2022 campaign is done, the work is already underway for 2023. Sexton will be spending countless hours in the shop getting his family-owned GAS Chassis 410 sprint car ready to go at the season openers in late January. He plans to run the full season with USAC/CRA. He also hopes to see some time in Fonseca’s potent car in select events when his 410 racing schedule permits.

In addition to prepping the cars, the young driver is looking to have some corporate marketing partners join him for the year. If you are interested, please contact him via the information that follows: e-mail mailto::Shanesexton7@gmail.com or by phone at (619) 362-5921.

If you are looking to get into sprint car racing, you can use the same contact information to purchase or get information on a new GAS Chassis for the 2023 campaign.

Sexton would like to thank Brian Fonseca and Samantha Sproull for the opportunity to wheel their lightning sprint and he would like to thank their team sponsors for making it possible. They are the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, Foothill Tractor & Heavy Equipment, KB Rod Benders, and MJK Auto Sales.

Sexton and the #74 team wish to extend their thanks to the following 2022 racing season partners. GAS Chassis, Key Brothers Racing, Nita Gatlin, Hugh Jorgan, Mike Pridgeon Racing Engines, AG Sandcars, Powder 1, Ron’s Tire and Brake, and Savage Racing.

Treffert Continues to Trounce as Official Competition Gets Underway Thursday at the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour and HSR Sebring Historics

  • Todd Treffert Extends Sebring International Raceway Win Streak with Eighth-Straight B.R.M. Endurance Challenge Victory and Fourth HSR Classic RS Cup Win in Speedconcepts 1974 No. 14 Porsche 911 IROC Prepared by the 901 Shop
  • John Deford Captures B.R.M. Vintage-Class Honors in his 1970 No. 57 Porsche 914/6 prepared by the 901 Shop
  • Vincent Barletta HSR Stoner Car Care Global GT Race Winner in the Turner Motorsport 2016 No. 96 BMW M6 GT3

SEBRING, Florida (December 1, 2021) – A trio of back-to-back Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) feature races kicked-off the competition schedule Thursday at Sebring International Raceway for the HSR Sebring Historics and this weekend’s seventh running of HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network.

Continuing his incredible reign over the competition at Sebring was Todd Treffert who scored a pair of convincing feature race wins in his Speedconcepts 1974 No. 14 Porsche 911 IROC prepared by the 901 Shop.

Treffert secured both the overall and GT Classic (GTC) victories in the B.R.M. Endurance Challenge race and then closed out the day’s schedule with a dominant win in the HSR Classic RS Cup race.

Combined with this year’s season-opening HSR Spring Fling, Treffert has amassed a run of eight-straight overall B.R.M. Endurance Challenge victories at Sebring the last few years. The Classic RS Cup win Thursday was also his fourth victory at the Sebring Historics in the all-Porsche series for 1970’s era 911 RS/RSR and IROC models.

Yves Scemama finished second to Treffert in both the B.R.M. and RS Cup races in his 1974 No. 152 Porsche 911 IROC prepared by Heritage Motorsports. Scemama also crossed the finish line second overall in the B.R.M. race in addition to GTC-class runner-up honors.

Dean DeSantis and Josh Tuggle co-drove to third overall and in GTC in the Heritage Motorsports 1969 No. 133 Porsche 911 RSR while David Agretelis completed the RS Cup top-three in his 901 Shop 1978 No. 192 Porsche 911 SC.

John Deford captured B.R.M. Vintage-class honors in his always competitive 1970 No. 57 Porsche 914/6 prepared by the 901 Shop and – for the second-straight year at the Sebring Historics – an overall sixth-place finish.

Deford was joined on the Vintage podium by the duo of “Rob Banks” and “Andy Gottaway” who finished second in the pristinely prepared RW Racing 1968 No. 25 Chevron B8. Third in Vintage went to the 1986 No. 114 Porsche 944 Turbo of George Kovakas. The always fast 951-model Turbo Porsche is prepared solely by Kovakas and his brother David Kovakas.

Thursday’s other feature race winner was Vincent Barletta who topped a fast field of 20 recently retired GT cars in the HSR Stoner Car Care Global GT race that saw three different manufacturers represented on the podium. Barletta took the victory in his Turner Motorsport 2016 No. 96 BMW M6 GT3 ahead of second-place finisher Bob Neapole in his 2016 RBN Motorsports with Cosmo-Sport No. 67 Porsche 991 GT3R prepared by Hudson Historics.

Third in the Stoner Car Care sprint went to Victor Spivak in the Guardian Angel Motorsports 2016 No. 76 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo.

Friday’s on-track HSR highlights at Sebring include the year-end one-hour HSR B.R.M. Historic/Prototype and GT Modern (GTM) Enduro at 10 a.m. EST, the first rounds of the season-ending HSR WeatherTech Sprint races in the afternoon and the season-ending Sasco Sports International/American Challenge race at Noon EST.

Another Friday feature is the Vintage Plane Arrival and parade at 4:30 p.m. EST to the Sebring International Raceway paddock where this year’s lineup of classic and WWII era planes will be on display through Sunday morning.

The major on-track part of the HSR Classic Sebring is the 12 Hours of Sebring tribute race that takes place Saturday and Sunday. It begins with a symbolic 12 hours of non-stop competition Saturday before all four competing Run Groups contest a final round of races Sunday morning to bring the Classic Sebring to a close.
