● As Kevin Harvick strides to his No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Mustang this weekend at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, those in the garage will see the veteran racer walking a little taller. Harvick is the NASCAR Cup Series’ most recent victor. He won last Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn to score his 59th career victory, his first of the season and his series-leading sixth at Michigan. It also punched Harvick’s ticket to the NASCAR Playoffs, as he became the 15th different winner this year to secure his spot in the 16-driver playoff field.

● Richmond marks the third-to-last race of the regular season before the NASCAR Playoffs begin Sept. 4 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. Drivers who have won a race earn a playoff berth, and never in the history of the playoffs (2004 to present) have there been enough winners to fill out the entire playoff field. In 2022, however, history could be rewritten. As the 15th different winner this season, Harvick’s victory meant that only the 16th and final spot is available, a position currently held by Ryan Blaney, who is second in regular-season in points but has not yet won a race this season. If there is another new winner not named Blaney, that winner will take the 16th and final playoff spot and bounce Blaney from playoff contention. But wait, there’s more! With two regular-season races still remaining after Richmond – Aug. 21 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International and Aug. 27 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway – there is the possibility of even more new winners this season. What happens in this scenario? The winning driver lowest in points gets bounced from the playoffs. Harvick is currently ninth in the regular-season standings ahead of fellow playoff drivers William Byron, Alex Bowman, Tyler Reddick, Daniel Suárez, Chase Briscoe, Austin Cindric, Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch. Harvick’s margin over Busch is 133 points. Harvick also holds a 94-point advantage over Hamlin and an 87-point edge over Cindric. The maximum amount of points any one driver can earn in a single race is 60 (40 points for the win and 10 points for winning the first or second stage).

● Speaking of winning, with his victory at Michigan, Harvick has now won in 18 of his 22 NASCAR Cup Series seasons. His first victory was on March 11, 2001 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Harvick has 59 career Cup Series wins, 28 of which have come since he turned 40. Now, the 46-year-old Harvick is 10th on the series’ all-time win list, and with his last 24 victories being with Ford, Harvick is also 10th on Ford’s all-time win list, where he is one of only 13 drivers to win 20 more races with the manufacturer.

● Harvick has made 777 career NASCAR Cup Series starts, with 125 of those starts coming on short tracks. And of his 59 Cup Series wins, seven have been on short tracks, with Richmond accounting for three of those victories. Harvick scored his first Richmond win in September 2006, his second in September 2011 and his third in April 2013.

● Harvick joined Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in 2014 and has since recorded 36 of his 59 career NASCAR Cup Series wins. However, none of them have been at Richmond. But Harvick has remained stout at the .75-mile oval. In his last 16 starts at Richmond as a member of SHR, Harvick has three runner-up finishes, nine top-fives and 12 top-10s. He has only one finish outside of the top-15.

● Harvick comes into Richmond with back-to-back top-10s in his last two NASCAR Cup Series starts at the track. He finished eighth in last year’s Federated Auto Parts 400 and second in the series’ return to Richmond in April.

● Harvick leads all active NASCAR Cup Series drivers in top-10s at Richmond. The driver of the No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Mustang has 28 top-10s in 42 career starts (66.7 percent). Next best is Kyle Busch with 26 top-10s.

● Harvick has led 15,833 total laps in his NASCAR Cup Series career, with 1,180 of those laps coming at Richmond.

● The Federated Auto Parts 400 will mark Harvick’s 43rd NASCAR Cup Series start at the Virginia short track. His first start at Richmond came on May 5, 2001. That race was won by SHR co-owner Tony Stewart, who beat then three-time champion Jeff Gordon by .372 of a second. Harvick finished 17th in what was his 10th career Cup Series start. You enjoyed a strong second-place finish at Richmond when we raced there in early April. What allowed you to secure that result?

“You’d like to be close enough to at least give yourself a chance. There at the end, we just kind of got jumbled up in traffic and never really got a chance to be close enough to make something happen. The team did a good job making a good pit call and our Mobil 1 Ford Mustang was pretty decent all weekend.”

Did the NextGen car unload at Richmond fairly similarly to how you used to unload with the previous generation car, or were there some nuances that were specific to the NextGen car that you had to get used to?

“There were definitely some differences with the car just the way that it drove and it felt and the things that you did, but it was still the same basic line of driving, and the things that happened during the race with the tire falloff were pretty standard.”

You won last Sunday at Michigan. After developing the NextGen car and finally getting that coveted victory, what has this car been like to get it to where you want it to be?

“It’s all totally different. I think after the Roval test last year, I knew not to have any expectations for this year. We were either going to be on the front side of this thing or we were going to be behind. There wasn’t going to really be any middle road. We found out we were behind and had to start really going to work, and I think as you look at this particular car, everything about it is different. You’ve got an electronic mirror, which I love, because it’s just so easy to use, right in your line of sight, you don’t have to move your eyes as far. But when you talk about stuff like that, you have to be very open-minded to, just, change. For me, I was prepared for change. I was prepared for work. We had a pretty extensive plan this year of using the simulator and trying to make it better, to make it fit with what we do at the racetrack with the short practices.”

What have the challenges been?

“It’s been challenging trying to get the cars up to speed, but there’s also been a factor of it being kind of fun because we talk about things – and we use the pedals as an example – we literally just got my pedals to where I can function inside the racecar about four or five weeks ago. I hated the gas pedal. I hated the brake pedal. It all feels different and, honestly, I put red grease on the bottom of my shoe every week, and it’s like the greatest thing ever because my foot will now slide on this clunky gas pedal and work like it used to. It’s just working through stuff like that. The steering is different, the mirrors are different, the pedals are different, the things that you talk about to make the car work are different. We went from back of the car being up to the front of the car up. Everything is just different, and you have this constant evolution of things that are happening.”

We’re back racing at a short track and you’re a fan of short tracks. Recently, another short track roared back to life, quite literally. What were your thoughts of seeing grassroots racing return to North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway?

“I think it caught everybody off guard how many people actually showed up to watch the Modified race. The people from the community showed up and, hopefully, they’ll keep showing up and keep participating in the event because it’s a cool facility. There’s just something about those old, nostalgic facilities that you can go back to and kind of go back in time. It’ll still be great when it’s repaved, but it still won’t be like it will be for this next month-and-a-half.”

Could a national NASCAR touring series race ever return to North Wilkesboro?

“I don’t know why you’d go through all that work and not have something like that there. That would be ludicrous to think that that track was going to survive on just Late Models and Modifieds, Saturday-night shows. There’s no way. There’s got to be some sort of plan for Truck or Xfinity or something that goes into that. There’s a lot of work that would need to be done there. I don’t know the workload, but we need more of those types of facilities. There’s just way more that goes into it than just saying that I think it’d be great to go there. I don’t dare say that because it’s not like a safety-item opinion that I have. That’s a business that would have to have lots and lots of money and infrastructure. But I think the short tracks, all of us who are old enough to have lived through this phase of mile-and-a-half tracks and getting rid of the short tracks, and now we’re back at ‘get rid of the mile-and-a-halves and get back to short tracks and road courses.’ So it’s a cycle that North Wilkesboro has fortunately survived through that I think it’ll still be in the conversation. It’s still close to Martinsville, it’s still close to Charlotte and Bristol, so there’s way more that goes into that equation. But for Trucks and Xfinity, it would be a no-brainer for those series, for sure. And it’s going to be way faster when they repave it, so it’s not going to be like it is now.”

NASCAR CUP SERIES RACE #24 – RICHMOND

Only three races remain in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) regular season, each of which will be contested on three completely different track configurations: a short track, road course and superspeedway. First up on the final push to the end of the regular season is the .75-mile, D-shaped oval of Richmond Raceway. Sunday’s Federated Auto Parts 400 will mark the series’ return to short track competition for the first time since April. While this is the second appearance of the season by NASCAR’s premier series at Richmond, this weekend will be the first-ever summer race weekend in the series’ history at the Virginia venue.

The spring race at Richmond Raceway saw Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron lead the charge for the bowtie brigade, driving his No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to a third-place finish. Three other Chevrolet drivers where in tow to give the Camaro ZL1 four top-10 finishes, including Byron’s teammates Kyle Larson (fifth) and Alex Bowman (eighth); and Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 team in 10th.

Richmond Raceway has hosted the NCS 131 times since the track’s inaugural event in 1953, with a Chevrolet-powered machine taking the victory a manufacturer-leading 39 times. Of those wins includes a streak of six consecutives triumphs, dating from May 2006 to September 2008. That string of victories performed by four different Chevrolet drivers holds the series’ record for the longest streak of consecutive wins at the track. The bowtie’s most recent victory at the track came in April 2021, where Alex Bowman recorded the first of his career-high four wins on the season.

NCWTS ROUND OF 10: RACE TWO

Looking to continue the manufacturer’s momentum as the series’ most recent winner, Chevrolet drivers and teams of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) are back in action this weekend, joining the NASCAR Cup Series for a doubleheader race weekend at Richmond Raceway. Taking the green under the lights on Saturday night, the Worldwide Express 250 for Carrier Appreciation marks the second of three races in the NCWTS Round of 10, giving the playoff field another opportunity to win and advance to the next round to continue the chase to the title.

Grant Enfinger and the No. 23 GMS Racing Silverado RST team heads into the race weekend as the only team with a guaranteed spot into the NCWTS Round of Eight following their win at the playoff opener at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. Chevrolet’s other playoff contender, Carson Hocevar, will head to Richmond seven points above the playoff cutline. 2022 marks just the second full-time season for the 19-year-old Niece Motorsports driver, with Hocevar racing his way into the coveted playoff field in both seasons. In 17 NCWTS races this season Hocevar has recorded six top-fives, including three in a row in recent events (Nashville – third; Mid-Ohio – third; Pocono – fifth).

The single appearance by the NCWTS at Richmond this season will be the 14th race in the series’ history at the track. The Virginia short track first hosted the series in 1995, with Terry Labonte driving the No. 5 Chevrolet for team owner Rick Hendrick to victory lane in the inaugural event. In the series’ 13 races at the track, Chevrolet has captured six of those victories to lead all manufacturers.

Notable entries into the NCWTS field this weekend includes Rajah Caruth, who will be back behind the wheel of the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Silverado RST. The 20-year-old Chevrolet driver made his NCWTS debut with the team earlier this season at World Wide Technology Raceway, piloting the Chevrolet-powered machine to a strong 11th-place finish. His second career NCWTS start will come at a track that holds a special place in Caruth’s young racing career, with Richmond Raceway also being the venue where he made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut back in April.

NXS PLAYOFF PICTURE: FIVE-TO-GO

The NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) is heading into an off weekend, but the grind doesn’t stop as pressure of the looming playoffs builds with just five races left in the NXS regular season. Chevrolet put on a strong showing in the series’ trip to the manufacturer’s home track of Michigan International Speedway, with JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier recording a runner-up finish and leading the bowtie brigade to seven top-10 finishes. Allgaier and the No. 7 JR Motorsports Camaro SS team has now finished in the top-three in three of the last four races, dating back to his most recent win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The weekend started out strong for the manufacturer right out of the gate, with Noah Gragson and the No. 8 JR Motorsports Camaro SS team capturing Chevrolet’s series-leading 12th pole win of the season. Leading the field to the green flag of the 125-lap race, Gragson went on to sweep both stage wins after pit strategy during the midway point provided crew chief Luke Lambert with the opportunity to opt for track position during a green flag pit cycle to compete for the stage two win. Gragson’s stage sweep marked Chevrolet’s manufacturer-leading 33rd NXS stage win of the season.

Following a series-leading 18th top-10 finish of 2022, AJ Allmendinger remained at the top of the NXS driver points standings, with fellow Chevrolet driver Justin Allgaier just 19 points back in the second position. Chevrolet also continues to hold strong in the top spot of the NXS manufacturer points standing, 89 points ahead of second. In the series’ 21 races thus far, Chevrolet drivers have accumulated 14 of those wins.. exactly double the win count of its manufacturer competitors combined (Toyota – 6; Ford – 1).

ONE PLAYOFF SPOT UP FOR GRABS

Kevin Harvick’s win at Michigan International Speedway made him the 15th different NASCAR Cup Series winner this season, leaving just one single spot remaining on the playoff grid for drivers to point their way into the 2022 NCS playoff field. Three races remaining in the series’ regular season means three opportunities for new winners.. which could potentially make a single win for some drivers not enough to secure their playoff berth.

Chevrolet’s NCS playoff outlook heading into Richmond:

· 2020 NCS Champion, Chase Elliott, remains in the top position in both driver points ranking and playoff ranking as he closes in on what would be his first career NCS regular season championship. In the NCS driver points standings, Elliott leads second-place Ryan Blaney by 119 points. Elliott’s series-leading four wins and 25 playoff points also has the Chevrolet driver ranked at the top of the playoff grid. Elliott could potentially clinch the regular season championship as early as this weekend at Richmond. The Chevrolet driver would need a 121-point lead over second-place in order secure the title.

· Seven different Chevrolet drivers have made at least one trip to victory lane and taken a spot in the 16-driver NCS playoff field thus far, giving the bowtie brand 43 percent of the playoff field with three races to go in the regular season.

· The first Chevrolet driver on the outside looking in is Petty GMS driver Erik Jones. While entering the Richmond race weekend below the cutline, the No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has recorded three top-10 finishes in the past five races.. making the team a strong contender to become the series’ 16th new winner of 2022.

· The winningest brand in the NASCAR Cup Series, Chevrolet, continues to sit atop the NCS manufacturer points standings, 76 points over second place. There was a lot of fall off at the Richmond race earlier this year. The way it played out and with all of the different strategies, were you surprised with how that race played out?

“I wasn’t really surprised. From what I’ve seen since I’ve been around Richmond is that it has been a high fall off track. In the Xfinity Series, my spotter Lorin Rainer in 2016, he told me going into the weekend that if I would just listen to him, that I would run good. We had an 80 lap run to the finish and with 20 to go we went from 20th to seventh in Johnny Davis’ car. It was because we saved our rear tires. It’s the same thing this year, I burned off my front tires because we had such short runs in the spring for most of the race, and then all of the sudden we had a long run at the end and I wasn’t prepared as a driver for that. I put my front tires past the limit and made speed early but it really cost me when there was a really long run at the end.”

The only thing that races right now represent are the strengths or weaknesses at certain tracks. I feel like we’ve gotten the road courses pretty good, and we were really good at the short tracks earlier this year as well. Sally McNulty Forms Partnership with Skip Barber Racing

PHOENIX, Ariz., (August 11, 2022) – Sports car racer Sally McNulty has exciting changes ahead for the remainder of the 2022 TC America powered by Skip Barber Racing School championship. Forming a new midseason partnership, Sally McNulty and Skip Barber Racing will join forces for the remainder of the season, beginning with Rounds 9 and 10 of the championship at Road America in Wisconsin, August 19-21. McNulty will pilot the brand-new No. 780 Borla Exhaust Skip Barber 11th Generation Civic Si for the remainder of the 2022 championship. Making this cooperative even more significant, only two turnkey 11th Generation Civic Si Honda Performance Development (HPD) race chassis was created for 2022 and are the beginning of the next generation of HPD racing.

“I am beyond pumped for the opportunity to race the new generation of Civic Si turnkey race car by Honda, as well as work with a championship-winning team,” said McNulty. “I graduated from Skip Barber School with my competition license, and it just feels right to race under their name as well. Looking forward to growing as a driver and competitor with them for the rest of the 2022 season!”

McNulty, a first-generation racer, began her racing career by participating in track day experiences which progressed to participating in local National Auto Sport Association (NASA) events. In 2019, she then advanced to the TC America series, earning multiple top-five finishes.

From mechanical issues to on-track incidents, McNulty has faced a challenging season. She is currently sixth in the TCA America championship point standings, eager for the new energy of a promising partnership with Skip Barber Racing. Looking to finish the season strong, she has three more double-headers with the new car and team to amass more points.

Despite setbacks, she remains steadfast in her goal to be the first woman to win the overall championship. McNulty and Skip Barber Racing will start fresh for the 2023 championship, which has already been announced to begin at NOLA Motorsports Park, February 24-26.

“We worked with Sally leading into her rookie season in TC America,” said Adam Roberts, TC Team Manager. “Through our 3 Day Racing School and 2 Day Advanced Racing we were able to help Sally transition from Time Attack driver to licensed TC America racer. We built our race team to support our alumni, it’s great to have Sally drive for us. The whole team is excited to support her as she continues to develop her craft.”

A historic road course, Road America, is a flowing 4.048 miles and 14 turns. The weekend consists of two practice sessions, a qualifying, and two forty-minute races.   • Chassis History/Info: Enfinger and the No. 23 team will be debuting a brand new Silverado RST in Richmond, as GMS Racing chassis no. 345 makes its on-track debut at the 0.75-mile short track. The crew at GMS Fabrication has prepped this piece specifically for the playoffs, and the No. 23 team is eager to see what it can do this weekend.
  • Pre-Race Invocation: Ahead of Saturday’s Worldwide Express 250, Grant Enfinger will deliver the pre-race invocation on stage with representatives from Motor Racing Outreach. As a devout man of faith, this is a very special opportunity for Grant, who also races with a handwritten Bible verse in his truck each weekend.
  • Short Track Heroes: Statistically speaking, short tracks are some of Enfinger’s best tracks on the schedule. With three wins, eight top-fives and 13 top-10 finishes across Richmond, Bristol, Martinsville, and IRP in his career, it’s typical to find him near the front of the field at these types of tracks. The veteran won in his first Richmond start back in 2020, and led the second most amount of laps in last year’s race as well. Also of note, Crew Chief Jeff Hensley has won twice before at Richmond – first in 2005 with Mike Skinner and most recently in 2020 with Grant.
  • Most Recent Winner: After fighting an uphill battle through the majority of the regular season, Grant Enfinger, Jeff Hensley, and the No. 23 team silenced the critics with a convincing first win of the season at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. The driver of the Champion Power Equipment Chevy was a threat throughout the night, but when a late race caution flew, a gutsy four tire call dropped him down the leaderboard with just a handful of laps left to run. Seemingly out of nowhere in a brilliant drive, Enfinger climbed all the way from 13th on the final two restarts to earn his seventh-career NCWTS win.
  • FearTheFinger Playoffs Profile: Grant Enfinger is the only driver who can breathe easily over the course of the next two races, as his win in Indianapolis secured his spot into the Round of 8. Heading into Richmond, Enfinger sits at the top of the playoffs grid, and is now focused on earning as many playoffs points as possible to build a cushion in the next round. While their spot is guaranteed, the No. 23 team is approaching races at Richmond and Kansas as big opportunities to continue their momentum. – GE Quote: “I’m definitely a short track guy, so I get excited any time the Camping World Truck Series heads to one.   • Chassis History/Info: Wood and the No. 24 team will compete with GMS Racing chassis no. 302 at Richmond Raceway. This specific chassis has quite the lengthy history on it, dating back to 2017 when it was initially debuted. Since the time it first joined the GMS fleet, multiple drivers have driven it to six top-fives and 10 top-10 finishes, including one win at Darlington Raceway in the spring of 2021, where it last competed. Richmond will mark the first time that Wood has piloted this Silverado RST.
  • Birthday Celebrations: On Sunday, August 7th, Jack Wood turned 22 years old. How did he celebrate? By going to the racetrack of course! Wood enjoyed the weekend off by attending the NTT IndyCar Series and Trans-Am race events on the streets of Nashville.
  • Richmond Rookie: Jack Wood is one of 16 drivers on the entry list that have never made a NASCAR national series start at Richmond Raceway. The rookie has three previous NCWTS short track starts under his belt, including two at Martinsville Speedway and one at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. With a background in short track racing on the West Coast, however, Wood is prepared to make his first laps at the iconic Virginia track on Saturday.
